Here's What Happened To Our Queen Of Christmas In 2017

You can have your qualms about whether the world’s lost Mariah Carey to bad vocals over there, because we’re still super into Mimi waking us up every day with her chart-topping whistles and jingles leading to Christmas morning. And, never a moment too late, “All I Want For Christmas,” Mariah’s original holiday single just peaked at Billboard Top 10’s Number 9 spot, the highest position the song’s ever reached since it was released nearly 25 years ago.

We don’t really get the running joke that Mariah comes out of hiding only during the holidays every year. She had a lukewarm reality show, a spectacular top-hits Las Vegas residency and… well, this year’s been especially eventful for our favourite pop diva.

She’s Still Got The Ring On
ring
Just to catch you up on speed, Mariah was engaged to billionaire James Packer for nine months in 2016. Their breakup seemed amicable at first, but reportedly she’s been scrambling for an “inconvenience fee” from him worth something around $50,000,000! Sure, she’s cancelled tour dates for him and seemed pretty accommodating to his schedule (we would be too, wink!) what she’s asking for seems pretty hefty. Plus she’s got to keep the 35-karat $10,000,000 ring — one point for Mariah!

She’s Dating Her Backup Dancer

Bryan Tanaka, the cutie who’d been lurking behind Mariah at her performances has ever since stepped into the spotlight following her breakup with as-mentioned. They sure do make a pretty couple, but us Lambs are waiting for her and Nick Cannon to get back at some point in the future? Nick even recently made a music video for his single “Dream Girl” dedicated to Mariah where he cast a white maltese decked in thick jewels and sings, “ain’t over my ex.” All we have to say about that is “hmmm…”

She’s Got A New Dream Team
We can’t talk about Mariah without mentioning her super awkward New Year’s Eve screw-up. In recent times, there’ve been speculation about the state of Mariah’s voice. She’s had sporadic bouts of severe bronchitis that’s forced her to cancel several performances and for a moment her public image was turning into water circling the drain. We’ve all been giving her manager Stella Bulochnikov with a side eye, but reports are Mariah’s fired and replaced her, so we’re sure she’s in better company to help her get back on her feet (other than when she’s being carried around by assistants!).

Her Voice Is Better Than Ever!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOTMYrd-wCA

Okay, even if Mariah’s no longer a choir angel from Heaven, she’s still a Queen A on Earth. She’s sold the most records in the world, to date, and has remained youthful and relevant spanning the starts and ends of many other pop singers’ careers. There’re rolls upon rolls of “best live” footage you can find on YouTube, but just a listen at her recent performances still manages to put a smile on our faces.

Steal This Look From The Grinch In COMME des GARÇONS's Holiday Collection

We’d totally admit to copping looks from the people we follow on Instagram — it’s part of the cycle of what makes trends, well, trendy after all — but how about we start stealing from the chief thief himself? We’re talking about the mean-spirited and almost despicable Grinch, who’s now the (probably reluctant) star of COMME des GARÇONS’ holiday t-shirts.

comme-des-garcons-grinch-t-shirts-christmas-2017-1 comme-des-garcons-grinch-t-shirts-christmas-2017-2

You see, he can actually be pretty fashion-forward if he wants to, now decked in the brand’s signature tartan plaid and with that ever-cheeky grin smeared across his face! The t-shirts are in line with the brand’s Christmas installation at the Tokyo-based Trading Museum, hence the text, and come in women’s, men’s and kid’s sizes — they’re available here at Dover Street Market, of course.
17112607_2

The question is, why focus on the bad guy of holiday classics? Well here’s our theory anyway: we think the poor old Grinch just had a bad rep from the whole debacle of, uh, shutting down Christmas for the entirety of Whoville. And yet, as a society, we’re somehow able to forgive the grouchy Dr. Seuss character because of our infinite hope that beneath all his warped actions, he’s actually a better, kinder person. There’s hope for us, you see.
Elsewhere, you’ll see that they’re just one part of the brand’s “Re/Tartan Re/Energy” holiday collection. They’ve also partnered with Novesta for a capsule wardrobe that sees some checkered STAR MASTER sneakers complete with black leather caps, for that cosy festive party look you know. Then, there are bags and wanderlust-worthy trunks that come all wrapped in the red-and-green tartan print too. Impeccably stylish.

If you can’t get enough of CDG’s weird vibes, you’ll also want to look out for the Teeth and Tongue wallets that we know would stand out against a sea of utilitarian black. It helps that they’re mighty fun, and involve visual trickery. You see, they look pretty simple on the outside, in the zippered cult designs that the brand’s known for, but pry them open and you’ll find a set of jaws waiting to devour your cash. Oh, we’d gladly let that happen then — and you would too.

We'll Never Get Bored Of These Christmas Movies Because… Christmas!

While Olaf was busy finding Christmas traditions for Anna and Elsa, we were already happily indulging in ours: Christmas movie marathons. Granted, it doesn’t take months of intense physical exercise and mental preparation to sit through these feel-goods like actual marathons do, but we reckon the fervour that’s necessary to engage in both activities are pretty much paralleled.
Every year we get snowballed with hit-and-miss Christmas blockbuster specials — and don’t get us wrong, we’re definitely seeing all of them — but the movies we’ve grown up with admittedly occupy a special space in our hearts. There’s only a week left and we’ve already bought our great gifts for friends and family, so what better way to spend the remaining time donning our ugly Christmas sweaters and enjoying these films to get us through!

Christmas With The Kranks

We all wish we could be part of the Krank family. After their daughter Blair announces that she’s leaving home for the holidays, husband-and-wife Luther and Nora Krank decide to ditch celebrating Christmas in a town full of Christmas-obsessed families. The slapstick that ensues between the two having to thwart off the festive cheer is hysterical, but even more hysterical than that is when Blair decides to call them on Christmas Eve surprising them that she and her fiancee are going home for the holidays! In the spirit of last-minute shopping Luther and Nora scramble to re-invite Christmas into their home, a comedy-of-errors we’re willing to re-watch ever year.

The Polar Express

The Polar Express could be well defined as the quintessential Christmas movie. A boy who remains unnamed throughout is distracted by a train passing outside his bedroom window on the night of Christmas eve. Eager to see where it’s headed, he hops onboard with a bunch of other kids to discover the magic of Santa in the North Pole. Through its clever use of symbolism and earnest perspective, we too learn the importance on holding on to the faiths we had when we were young.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Even if you’re allergic to happiness, this movie is sure to turn your frown upside down. Tim Burton, a true icon of quirky macabre, depicts Christmas in his own twisted way with The Nightmare Before Christmas by sending Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, through a journey of discovery in a world of joy and colour, which incidentally is completely unfamiliar to him. The story is sinister and grim, yet somehow totally appropriate for the kids. With Burton’s ironic take on the holidays you’ll get just the right amount of awww from the romance between Jack and his sweetheart Jane without the cringe of queueing in front of other families to meet mall-Santa.

 Elf

When Buddy was just a baby, he snuck into Santa’s sack and accidentally got sent back to the North Pole after Christmas. Ever since, he’s been raised as a Christmas elf. Now, Buddy’s determined to find his birth family. The hilarity that ensues with basically Will Ferrell in an elf costume attempting to navigate the human world is one that we can’t get enough of. From bumbling adult childishness to naive kindness, Buddy learns how to operate in society as much as he teaches the world to be a kinder place.

 Arthur Christmas

If the mythology of Santa as an omnipresent Grandpa who singlehandedly sleighs the night sky delivering kids presents just doesn’t do it for you, a crew of highly trained elves on an invisible spaceship just might…? Arthur Claus, son of do-we-even-need-to-say-who, turns out to be kind of an incompetent successor of his dad’s. His heart of gold, however, proves to be enormously useful as he rallies the gift-giving crew to deliver one last present they left out on a magical sleigh fuelled by flying reindeer parked on the ship’s garage. It’s a movie the kids will totally get a kick out of and parents will secretly laugh along to.

This Vlogger Made An Underwater Makeup Tutorial And It Went Viral

Thanks to the internet, there’s really no limit these days when it comes to makeup. If you can dream it, you can probably find it online — or create the vision yourself. Take, for example, the time Patrick Starrr did a full-on makeup tutorial while in handcuffs, or the many wild contouring tactics that YouTubers have created over the years. And now, if you’ve ever wondered about doing your makeup while underwater…well, there’s a tutorial for that too.
No, we aren’t even kidding.

The Instagram account @meplusfashion recently shared a video that shows how to do your makeup from start to finish while submerged in a swimming pool. In the clip, we see the makeup artist expertly apply blush, eyebrow filler, and mascara, as she casually hangs out underwater like an IRL mermaid. She even uses an eyelash curler like a pro, and finishes off the look with a coat of liquid lipstick. (TBH, I am pretty impressed; I can’t even deal with opening my eyes underwater for five seconds even if I tried, let alone keep ’em open long enough to apply makeup.)

From the comments however, it seems as though the reactions are pretty mixed. Some folks are worried about the life-span of her products, with one user writing: “What on earth, that mascara went EVERYWHERE and is probabaly no longer in working condition.” Others seemed to overlook the practicality of the tutorial, with comments like: “So damn extra but I dig.”
Overall? It might be best to file this under the “don’t try this at home” category, unless you have a lot of waterproof makeup and serious lung capacity. And even then, maybe not.

How Singapore Airlines’ New Fare Types Will Affect Your Travels

It’s always a privilege to fly Singapore Airlines (SIA), especially if you’ve got money to burn. Thing is, that privilege is going to cost travellers slightly more from January 20 onwards, and we’re not talking about first class here (although that categories underwent an extreme makeover back in November).

sia_firstclass6

It’s the economy section where the big changes are rolling in. Three new fare types: Lite, Standard, or Flexi, are the options that travellers will have to select from when booking a seat on economy class – for both Singapore Airlines and SilkAir. The new fare type also applies to Business Class seats.
This is all part of a new airfare pricing structure that will be introduced next month. It will affect advance seat selection, frequent flyer mileage accrual rates, baggage allowance, as well as changes and refund flexibility. And of course, the changes apply to tickets sold worldwide as well.
Here is what you can expect:
Economy

Premium Economy
Screen Shot 2017-12-19 at 2.58.50 PM

Business
Screen Shot 2017-12-19 at 2.59.43 PM

Besides the new pricing scheme, which introduces an additional US$5 charge for passengers that want to reserve seats, SIA and SilkAir will also be renaming their seats. For instance, “Preferred Seats” will be known as “Extra Legroom seats”, while a new category called “Forward Zone seats” – near the doors, will be introduced.
sia_firstclass2

SIA’s new first class cabin

Chocking up mileage will also be easier now. Economy Class passengers on Lite fares will earn 50% of the mileage rate, while those on Standard fares and Flexi fares will earn 75% and 100% respectively. Premium Economy passengers on the Flexi tier will earn 125%, with Flexi passengers in the Business Class section getting 150% per mile.
The new changes are all part of SIA’s three-year transformation plan to combat fierce competition from low-cost carriers. Whether this achieves the desired effect remains to be seen. Only one thing is for certain: flying SIA will never be the same again.

adidas’ New Prophere Kicks are Made for the Street – Here’s How

Sneakerheads, take a break from browsing Highsnobiety’s Instagram feed and say hello to the Prophere – the latest street-worthy kicks on the block, and the pride and joy of adidas Originals. Having debuted on Dec 15, the new silhouette is, as adidas puts it, “designed to disrupt the mainstream” – a pretty accurate description if you ask us.
Combining the slickest, most garish styles of 2017, rolling it into a ball and kicking it into 2018, the new Prophere is set to be the trendsetter of the year ahead, and it’s not difficult to see why. Its key feature is a bold silhouette with a sculpted midsole in a dynamic texture – making it look less shoe and more architectural marvel.
And it just looks damn cool to begin with; especially when you pair it with the rest of adidas Orginals’ range of street wear. Here are some examples:
Ladies:
1. The Baller

25435406_10155915988459328_941248361_o

Trefoil Boyfriend Tee – $49, Pants – $99, Velvet Vibes Hoodie Track Jacket – $126.75

Track top, sweatpants, and t-shirt – an easy-to-slip-on outfit for a casual day out, with a bit of Hip Hop swag thrown in too.
2. The Missy Elliot
25435584_10155915992869328_1028259711_o

Passaredo Tee – $55, Passaredo Leggings – $49, Passaredo Track Jacket – $109

Print on print on print, can’t go wrong with that. Plus, the Prophere adds a nice visual compromise as well.
3. The Sporty Chick
25467741_10155915990169328_1317413934_o

Who says full-length dresses can’t be street-worthy? Deck this out with the Prophere and you’re all set to go.
Men:
1. The Adventurer
25440948_10155915994729328_390124958_o

There’s a little bit of a “camo” look going on here, without going too full-blown army, and those prints are just dope.
2. The Quirky Lad
25434362_10155915996384328_598221193_o

Winter Shirt – $89, Pharrell Williams Hu Hiking Cargo Pants – $299

Simple, made for the street, yet unique enough not to be put in the “basic” category – a real winning outfit, especially with the Prophere.
3. The Swag Man
25440830_10155915998079328_1955970522_o

EQT Bold 2.0 Track Jacket – $130, EQT Bold Tee – $55

Black and white, all day and night – that’s the motto of anyone who will deck this slick monochrome outfit.
So, you see that the Prophere takes like a duck to water when it comes to matching with other adidas Originals outfits (it wouldn’t really make sense if it didn’t). Considering it is relatively affordable at $200, it’s set to become the must-cop item of 2018, especially since Yeezy’s are unfortunately still pretty much inaccessible for the majority of the population.
If you’re interested in scoring a pair, you can get one now at select adidas Originals stores and other retailers like Limited Edt, Pedder on Scotts, Seek Official, Trendz, The Social Foot, AW LAB, and online via adidas’ website.

Reconnect With Nature Over The Uniqlo U SS18 Collection

Much like ripe fruit, a fashionable wardrobe always has an expiration date and therefore needs to be refurbished every few months. That’s where Uniqlo’s such a great intervenor, bridging classicism with modernity. It’s functional style that everyone can buy into. Beyond that, its intellectually handpicked design partners, from Jil Sander to JW Anderson, somehow captures an essence of quiet desirability that keeps us going back season after season. Now a biannual line, we’ve just caught a glimpse of the Uniqlo U SS18 collection, a bricolage of nature incorporating muted earth tones to colour the familiar boxy t-shirts and wide-leg jeans we associate the brand with.
Uniqlo U is helmed by Christopher Lemaire, who in his own fashion-week shown label Lemaire likewise champions many of the ideals held by Uniqlo. Not only is nature a great visual theme to build off in relation to Lemaire’s design ethos, it’s also a great colour palette mixing and matching. The main release date for Uniqlo U SS18 is 26 January 2018, but more items will be launched in subsequent phases in March and April next year. Apple Launches Most Powerful iMac Ever at $7,188

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the term, “most powerful”, is catchy marketing lingo for describing a newly released gadget. But for Apple fans, in particular creative professionals, that expression is more or less the truth. One only needs to take a look at the newly released iMac Pro.
With impressive specs that’ll make your eyes pop, the new line of iMacs are a class above its predecessors. Zeon processors of up to 18 cores, 22 Teraflops of graphics performance, and a ginormous 27-inch Retina 5K display are fitted into this all-in-one station. Translating the jargon, it’s a freaking beast of a computer.

a52f70b6-e16b-11e7-af98-bc68401a7f65_972x_155510

“iMac Pro combines the incredible design of the iMac with the most powerful workstation architecture we’ve ever built,” said John Ternus, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering. “iMac is the most popular desktop for our pro users due to its amazing display and elegant design, so we completely re-engineered it to deliver performance far beyond what anyone thought possible in an all-in-one.”
Real-time 3-D rendering, immersive VR (which is the first time an Mac is compatible with the feature), and the ability to edit videos at 4K and 8K resolutions are just some of the selling points of the new iMac. Of course, power comes with a price, and the iMac has a starting retail price of $7,188 (available from Dec 19 onwards).
If you’re willing to cough up the cash, however, the new iMac Pro will bring your performance to a whole new level, even when compared to the next fastest quad-core iMac available. Just take note that once you start loading in additional components, the price is going to skyrocket to the tune of US$13,000 – definitely not what we’d call a bargain, although worth it if you have a lot of money to spare.

Let’s be real — the only people who are easy to shop for are ourselves. If you’re like me and have a big circle of women on your gift list and they all have diverse interests, holiday shopping can be downright exhausting — which makes it extremely difficult if you’re trying to buy someone you love something that’s super-heartfelt. Not to mention that we’re constantly bombarded with a million products especially during this festive season.

How are you supposed to know what to buy for your BFFs/sister/mum?

Samsung May Reveal the Galaxy S9 in February

The iPhone X may have hit shelves not too long ago, but it could soon have a fierce competitor on its heels barely months into its life cycle – if recent market speculation is to be believed. According to a report from Bloomberg, Samsung will reportedly announce its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S9, earlier than expected in February.
Leaked computer-aided design:

An official product release could also happen as early as March, according to people familiar with the matter, making it a month earlier than usual for Samsung (the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus were released in April this year).
The models, which will most likely be called the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, will include upgraded camera systems, while the infinity display may be stretched further with a narrower bezel on top. Check out a mock-up of what such a phone could look like:

If anything, this is the latest punch thrown by Samsung in the never-ending smartphone bout with Apple, and one that could propel it into the realm of market supremacy – at least for the time being. Only one thing is certain: nothing is confirmed till Samsung gives the official word, so it’s good to take all this with a pinch of salt.
Till then, stick with us for more updates.

Mass Appeal: Be One With The Force With These Star Wars-Inspired Looks

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or on one of the outer rim planets, Star Wars mania has descended upon us faster than the Millennium Falcon can complete the Kessel Run — and as pop culture fans, we can’t help but feel tempted to put together entire looks based on the latest film in the instalment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you’re a fan, you’ve already caught it, but chances are, you might feel inspired to live it out in your daily life too, so we’ve got you.

We’ve scoured the galaxy for the best Star Wars collections this side of the universe, from Columbia’s Hoth-inspired jackets, to Cargo Cosmetics’ eyeshadow palettes, to even a capsule collection by local designer Sabrina Goh. We know, we know, the new saga really deals with a more nuanced meaning of “balance in the force”, but sometimes we can’t help but revel in some friendly rivalry too. So, go ahead, pick a side — The First Order or the Resistance? The only bad feeling you’re gonna have is how fast your wallet’s about to be emptied, right about now.

The Resistance

resistance

You’ll wanna awaken the Force with these Light-side apparel, starting with this shirt dress from Elohim by Sabrina Goh’s ‘Synthesis’ collection — it’s a subtle piece from the homegrown designer that sees line drawings of Rey, Rose, Finn, and R2-D2, proving that you won’t have to look completely geeky to rep your fandom.

If you’re travelling to a different (weather) system, there are cold wear options too — Leia it up with Columbia’s vintage-look jacket, complete with a jacket and vest combination in neutral tones, or Her Universe’s Rose cargo jacket that celebrates our favourite new character. And nope, you won’t look like a scruffy-looking nerf-herder at all since they’re both sleek and stylish; and unique — no one wants to be a clone.

Strike back just as hard with your accessories too; a Nixon watch with a subtle logo at the 12 o’clock mark, a Rag & Bone pouch glinting in hopeful silver (sorry C-3PO), a regal necklace, and a pair of Clarks shoes comfy enough for exploring Jakku and everywhere else far, far away. Much to learn we have, but bearing the proud title of ‘rebel scum’ suddenly became incredibly easy.

  1. ASOS x Star Wars Scuba Printed Mini Dress, £50
  2. Star Wars x Elohim by Sabrina Goh Line Shirt Dress, $189.90
  3. Star Wars Rebellion Logo Layered Necklace, $9.90, from hottopic.com
  4. Her Universe Star Wars The Last Jedi Rose Girls Jacket, $44.90
  5. Cargo Cosmetics x Star Wars The Resistance Mascara, US$20
  6. Columbia Leia Organa Echo Base Jacket
  7. State Bags Hattie Ewok Star Wars Backpack, US$295
  8. Nixon Medium Time Teller SW 31mm in Rey Black/Brown, $125
  9. Cargo Cosmetics x Star Wars 8 Well Eye Shadow Palette (The Light Side), US$28
  10. Rag & Bone Star Wars Wristlet Zip Pouch, US$275
  11. Clarks Force of Nature Collection Boots in Desert Sand, $339, available at Clarks stores

The First Order

firstorder

Granted, some of us have more of an affinity with the dark side, and why not? The force is certainly strong with this one, as does the powerful look of Her Universe’s Captain Phasma-inspired satin bomber jacket, and all-black sweaters and t-shirts that signal you’re truly comfortable shrouded in more menacing, inSidious colours.

Then, you’ll wanna rock up to the Death Star with these Rag & Bone heeled boots and Ren-der everyone else to shame, simply because these are the most sexy shoes we wished they’d make standard issue on board any Star Destroyer. That, plus Cargo Cosmetics’ gravity-defying volumising mascara and a smokey eye look from their Eye Palette that’d put any goody-two-shoes Jedi to shame.

Or, you can troop forth with the Stormtrooper-inspired accessories of a Nixon timepiece and State Bag’s practical backpack. The next time anyone dares to find your lack of faith disturbing, you know what you’ll be serving — looks that could kill.

  2. Uniqlo Star Wars The Last Jedi Graphic T-Shirt, $19.90

NYLON’s Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide

Come on, you’ve heard the medley of sing-along carols they play in the malls right? It’s unmistakeable; our favourite festive holiday is around the corner, and in the cheerful spirit of giving, we’re here to offer our epic round-ups of the best gifts you can buy for your friend / family member / significant other. Only this time, it’s for the guy whose Instagram feed is curated to Hypebeast-style perfection, the couch potato who takes Netflix and chill to a new dormant level, or the basic b who thinks she’s a queen. Basically, like you, we love stereotyping people in our heads (for fun!), so we’re going along with that to suss out the perfect present.
We’ll be updating this page as our gift guides come along — so bookmark this and keep hitting refresh daily!

THE MILLENNIAL

millennialbanneredit
This one’s for the buzzword of the year: millennials.

We (oh yes, we) have been celebrated and gloriously marketed to, and then got our reputation dragged through the mud as famously as our dear Taylor Swift. Do we really need the attention? Apparently. So here’s a list that caters to our narcissistic selves: we’ve got something for the ‘gram, something with a bit of irony and humour, and a lot of pure pink class. All prizes, no participation awards. Time to bring cheer to that special snowflake of yours — you see, he or she probably feels entitled to that gift already.

THE APPLE FAN

applefansbanner
This time, however, we’re not targeting an age group, but a particular type of person; an individual that’s quite possibly the most loyal customer of all time, the user that every brand dreams of selling to: yes, we’re looking at you Apple fans.

Once upon a time, Apple products were marketed towards “creatives”. These days, anyone can an iPhone (if they can afford it), with plenty of goodies that come along with belonging to the iOS ecosystem. And, if you’re a major Apple fan, chances are that you’ll know someone who is one too. So, here’s the guide that’ll help you sort out the best stuff to get them.

THE GAMER GEEK

gamergeekbanner
We all know one of them; the gaming enthusiast who’s constantly glued to the gaming device of their choice, whether it’s a portable one or not, and who can skilfully manoeuvre zombie outbreaks and war zones (virtual ones) with just a few choice buttons and sheer grit.

Sure, they get pretty holed up at times, a little antisocial maybe, but in no way do we imply nerdiness — after all, everyone’s a gamer nowadays, whether they’re crushin’ candy on their mobile phone, unceremoniously gathering in crowds to silently tap on their phones (we’re looking at you Pokémon Go masters), or safe at home mashing buttons on their zhng-ed up keyboard or gaming console controller. And the best among us? They’re hooked up to a mic, forging new alliances and being intrepid explorers of new alternative universes, we swear (and they literally do too) that it’s as romantic as it sounds.

Now, these gamers might be oddly specific about their technology, but we reckon we did a good job with some of these. Warning: lots of Star Wars geekery ahead, because are you really a geek if you’re not into the biggest space odyssey ever?

THE HYPEBEAST WANNABE

unnamed-3

Here’s an entire category dedicated to another buzzword of the year  – the hypebeast. The ‘hypebeast’ is not a new concept in the world of street hype, although this year saw a sudden spike in interest when Supreme decided to collaborate with Louis Vuitton for one of the most high-profile collaborations ever. Chances are, you probably couldn’t afford anything from the Supreme X Louis Vuitton collection or maybe you didn’t want to camp out in the heat overnight just for a couple of items.

We might secretly be judging all those street kids dripping in the hype from the brands they decorate themselves with, but inside we all wish to be like them too. If you didn’t manage to cop anything from the Supreme X Louis Vuitton drop, maybe these gift ideas might be able to quench the inner hypebeast in you, or that friend of yours. Now, all they need is a ghetto backdrop, a dope photographer, and invites to the coolest, most exclusive end-of-year parties.

THE #WANDERLUST TRAVELLER

travellerbanner

By now, you would’ve gotten used to the cheery Christmas tunes that are blasted everywhere and the novelty might’ve worn off – we won’t be surprised if you’ve grown more cynical of all things Christmas. But don’t let the sour grapes get you down – especially since it’s the season to be travelling!

Everyone you know will be making a quick getaway, whether it’s to a far-far-away land or a short hop, skip, and a jump away.

We’ve prepared a gift guide to help you with your gift-giving to all the busy travellers out there. They might be practical, a bit silly, or outright wacky, but whatever it is, every traveller is certain to love them. P.S. we totally understand if you want to save some of these for yourself and your upcoming travel adventures.

THE MUSIC LOVER

musicloverbanner
Whether it’s gritty rhymes spouted out of a rapper’s mouth, melodic guitar licks with a cranked up bass, or thumping beats from a DJ, there’s only one universal truth in this world: we love music, and that’s something that will never change, despite humanity’s perpetual inability to agree with one another.

Which brings us to our next category in our epic holiday gift guide: the music lover. This is not a person who simply pops in earbuds for the commute home. Neither is this someone who switches on music for “background noise”. This is a person who lives and breathes music, the sort of person who will say: “if music is a crime, then throw me in jail, motherf*cker.”

Well, yeah. You get the drift. So we’ve got here lined up a list of all the best gifts you can buy for that audiophile in your life. Even though these people are tough nuts to crack, if you can enhance their musical experience by even the smallest sonic inch, they’ll be indebted to you for life.

THE FOODIE

foodiebanner
We all know that one person who’s particularly food-centric, and we’re not talking about a person who simply likes to eat. Yup, we’re talking about that special foodie in your life. The one with the insatiable appetite to try out every new food joint, armed with a camera, ready to give their opinion on just about every dish. Being a foodie isn’t just about visiting cafes and restaurants, though. A foodie is one who won’t shun away from large chain establishments and hawker centres, too – you can’t deny that those places are home to some of the best indulgences.

So if you know someone who’s obsessed with culinary tourism, who won’t shut up about their dish recommendations, and who probably harvests their own herbs at home, then gift your favourite foodie friend something he/she will love.

THE COUCH POTATO

couchpotatobanner
Oh that’s right, we’re talking about that one lazy formidable friend or sibling who takes dedication to the sloth life to an all new level. Netflix and chill? We say, they have zero chill about it because here they are, pulling an all-nighter, not for work or assignments, but just to watch the entire Stranger Things 2 in one sitting. You might think they don’t exactly have their priorities in check, but so what if their entire exercise regime involves walking to the fridge and back, all for the sake of a midnight snack refuel? You gotta admire their tenacity here. As long as they’ve got a comfortable couch/bed, and some chips in tow, they’re happy. Except if you throw a spoiler in their face!

Well, at least you know they’re the most reliable people to seek out when you need someone to geek out over the latest episode of whatever hit television series there is — heck, they might even be running the Reddit thread — so for that and more, quit the nagging, give in, and show some love to the couch potato.

THE YOUTUBER / SNAPCHAT QUEEN

youtuberbanner
We’ve got gift guides so that you know what to get for the ever-lovable couch potatothat irritatingly cool millennialthe hardcore Apple fan, and the one with #wanderlust in his blood this Christmas season, but the hardest yet had to be shopping for the Youtuber and Snapchat Queens. These are the people who are constantly updating their lives on social media, and always seem to be on point with their outfits and accesories. So what do you get for your friends and family who seem like they’ve got everything they could possibly want?

Well, it’s pretty simple. Anything that helps to take better photos and videos is always a good bet; or you can look to get aesthetically pleasing gifts that your loved ones will be proud to show off on all their social media accounts. Just remember to subtly hint for them to tag you so that you can boast that you were featured on thatreallycoolperson’s Instagram.

THE FITSPO FRIEND

fitspobanner
This one should be familiar — you’ve got that person in your life who’s always opting for avocado toasts and açaí bowls, not for the ‘gram but because they actually believe in it. He/she reads the labels on every item at the supermarket and is always ready to educate you on what you’re haplessly ingesting (read: it’s never good), and the one who extolls the value of coconut oil’s multiple uses in their lives. True story.

So here’s one for all the yoga enthusiasts, healthy living advocates, and the people who actually don’t waste their gym memberships, just because they’ve made barre/crossfit/hot yoga and whatever trendy fitness regime part of their daily lives. The ones who don’t actually go crazy over the insanity workout. And yep, that awesome gym buddy who’s constantly there to cheer you on.

THE QUEEN B

queenbbanner
You might not wanna admit it, but every girl clique has one; the Taylor Swift of the hot celebrity/supermodel Taylor Swift squad, the Beyoncé of Destiny’s Child, and the Blair Waldorf of Manhattan’s elite. She’s brilliant, gorgeous, successful, talented, confident, and with fine taste and a glorious wardrobe that matches it. The only downside you kinda gleefully admit though? Yeah alright, she might be a little *whispers* basic, what with her unbridled love for pumpkin spice lattes and overuse of the dog face filter on Snapchat — but who cares! Love or hate her, refuse to like her Instagram posts but still stalk her #OOTDs anyway, she’s the undeniable It-Girl, who really already has everything you see, so what can you, oh humble gift-giver, bestow upon her? Well, these.

THE BOSS

thebossbanner
And…the names have been drawn. This year’s Secret Santa has landed you with the task of buying a gift for your boss, and there’s a split second of minor shock before major panic engulfs. What exactly do you buy? Is there any hope? Will this…gasp, affect your job? Insert dramatic classical music.

Ah, but there’s no need to worry. Your boss is only human, and like all humans through the course of history, he or she loves being pampered with a good gift every now and then. Plus, a Secret Santa is probably the best opportunity to show just how well you know your boss. It’s basically free brownie points laid out on a platter for you.

But of course, a price-restricted Secret Santa exchange shouldn’t be the only way to show appreciation for the folks in charge. They too, deserve a little bit of splurging, and if you’re willing to splash the cash, here are the best gifts you should get.

THE WORKAHOLIC COLLEAGUE

workaholicbanner
We all know that one person with an unhealthy obsession for working. Like a drug that never fully satisfies, he or she cannot stop replying emails, leave the office on time, or just well…stop working. And if this person is your colleague, you’ll see them trundling to the office on a daily basis looking like a zombie from The Walking Dead.

And that sight just makes you want to tell them to chill out, although by doing so, you risk them telling you to bugger off. So if you can’t beat them, join them. Feed their workaholic addictions with presents that’ll make them feel comfortable, even if they’ve somehow transformed 9 to 5 to 9 to 1 in the freaking morning. Here are the best presents you should buy that resident workaholic this Christmas.

YOUNG PARENTS

youngparentsbanner
Remember when we were kindergarteners and would go “ewww!” every time our teachers asked us to line up two-by-two holding hands? It’s sure a long shot from that to becoming expecting parents, but for those of us who’ve found love in our lives, having kids can definitely be a happily-ever-after sort of cake-topper.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the fairytale isn’t over. In fact, it’s some twenty-odd years from the next time you’ll sleep without worry, if at all. That’s why we’re here to help — we’ve come up a list of great purchases you should invest in or hint unsubtly to your friends and family that you need this Christmas. These definitely won’t relieve you of the burden kids can unceremoniously bury you under, but hopefully they’ll help you get through the day without turning into Lynette from Desperate Housewives!

NYLON’s Ultimate Beauty Gift Guide

There may be no shortage of beauty drops across 2017, but if there’s one thing every beauty enthusiast knows, it’s that nothing beats what the festive season brings. Christmas is right around the corner, and since the act of giving and receiving ranks high on our list of priorities, we’re here to offer the cream of the crop in holiday beauty. From the biggest blockbuster makeup sets and skincare hampers to the most intoxicating fragrances and products we’d love to have on our Top Shelf, these luxe gifts are definitely worth every penny.
We’ll be updating this page as our gift guides come along, so be sure to bookmark this and hit the refresh button every other day, leading up to Christmas!

BLOCKBUSTER BEAUTY SETS

blockbustersetsbanner
The products we’ve got in our stash are enough to last us years, but when beauty brands decide to throw their best picks together and present it to us in the form of a gorgeous, gigantic vault, it’s hard to keep that wallet closed. Every beauty store (Sephora, in particular), has turned into a haven filled with bundles of joy decked out on the shelves. It doesn’t matter what kind of makeup you’re into, either. Of course, there are plenty of eyeshadow kits to go around, but we’re loving the complete makeup sets which help put our entire look together, just in time for the festivities.

LIMITED EDITION HOLIDAY PALETTES

limitededitionpalettesbanner
If there’s one thing eyeshadow fanatics can’t get enough of, it’s an extensive palette featuring all the shades their hearts desire. When the holiday season rolls around, however, so the do the limited edition palettes. Those collaborations with Rossy de Palma and Gigi Hadid have brought us the chicest of palettes, but of course, we’ll never leave out Urban Decay, especially since they’re purveyors of this makeup staple. We can’t resist the sparkling pigments and sleek gilded cases that embrace them, but can you really blame us? Go ahead, ditch them mattes this season and deck your lids in all shades of metallic and glitter.

ALL THAT GLITTERY GOODNESS

allthatglittersbanner
Legend has it, that if you douse yourself in every single item on this list, you will LITERALLY transform into a magical unicorn. Yup, we’ve got an entire beauty gift guide dedicated to one hell of a polarising beauty trend: glitter. For those who are in favour of more shimmer (🙌🏼 you know where we stand), this one’s for you. From soft shimmers that’ll bring a bit of illumination to your complexion, to heavy holographic glitter gleams, these products will render your KiraKira app useless.

VALUE-FOR-MONEY

valueformoneybanner
We may enjoy our Christmas beauty splurges, but our bank accounts definitely don’t. To cut them some slack, we’ve rounded up some of the wallet-friendly affordable gifts that are worth every cent, save for the advent calendar and a few of our favourite sets. But when you break it down, you’re really scoring them at a great deal, and the damage isn’t as bad as it seems. As for the cheaper variety on our list, its low price point certainly doesn’t reflect its quality, which is why we’ve included them here in the first place.

LOCAL BEAUTY BRANDS

localbeautybrandsbanner
Why go to the ends of the earth in search for quality beauty essentials when there are these homegrown brands around? With this many labels making their way into the beauty scene, there are even more reasons for us to go local this Christmas. With a slew of new launches, we’ve noticed a little trend amongst the locals, too. Most of these brands are honed in on a natural variety of skincare and makeup, offering a myriad of pampering formulas to care for our complexions while showing Mother Nature some love. So if you know a beauty junkie who’d love a few festive treats made with the best ingredients, have a read below.

INTOXICATING CHRISTMAS FRAGRANCES

christmasfragrancesbanner
From fresh florals to woody orientals, a fragrance can do more than just make you smell attractive. An intoxicating scent is one that will lift your mood as well as your confidence, so you might notice a slight shift in behaviour after a quick spritz. With this many perfumes out there, however, you might be expanding your fragrance wardrobe this festive season. Here’s our selection of fragrances to evoke every wonderful facet of Christmas.

SKINCARE HAMPERS

skincarehampersbanner
Even if it doesn’t seem like we’re big on beauty, our cluttered desks in the NYLON office are a dead giveaway. In fact, they look like they could be featured in an episode of Hoarders: Beauty Edition. While we do go a little crazy over new makeup launches when they drop, we’re a bunch that prioritises skincare, because who doesn’t want a naturally flawless, glowing complexion?

Great skin isn’t simply a matter of DNA, which is why we’ve turned to a dizzying number of products on the market to solve our skin woes – some of us have even adopted the comprehensive multi-step Korean skincare routine that has sparked a ton of intrigue in recent years. It can be somewhat exhaustive to hunt for items that work for us, so to make our lives easier, some of our favourite brands have assembled their most nourishing picks to restore radiance, just in time for the holidays.

POP CULTURE + 90s NOSTALGIA

popculturenostalgiabanner
Nostalgia works. There’s tons of scientific explanations and case studies that could explain why nostalgia works, but you aren’t here for that. You probably clicked onto this article because you’ve got that one friend who loves everything to do with TV and movies, and can pretty much understand every single pop culture reference on the internet, but what do you get her? A shirt with some 90s gadget or famous movie poster? That’s just way too clichéd.
If you’ve got a gal friend and you’re stuck on what would make a good gift, why not get her some really cool pop culture and 90s inspired makeup? Not only are these beauty items super useful, they also make really cute additions to her makeup shelf. You’re welcome.

How annoying is it when you get to security in the airport only to be told that you have to chuck out your nearly full, new bottle(s) of coveted lotions, potions, makeup or whatever you happen to be harbouring in the murky depths of that carry-on.

Avoid the hassle and just grab one of these nifty travel kits for the holidays, all sized so that the oaf handing out ziplock baggies for your cosmetics won’t get the pleasure of smirking when you start to whimper whilst parting with your beloved items, which are larger than 100ml.

FOR THE BOYS

fortheboysbanner
Finally, we’ve got one for the guys — which caters to their very specific needs too. By the way, it’s not that guys don’t love taking care of their skin, we know plenty of guys who do, but let’s just generalise a little and say this: they’re always looking for fuss-free items that easily get everything taken care of at the same time, something that’s easy to introduce into their routine, and an all-in-one product if possible. Then, they like to zoom in on exactly what they want too; say, something to treat the odd breakout, something for when they feel like their skin’s a little parched after an entire day out in the sun, or just, an item that helps groom their hair/beard. Speaking of that, hours in the sun can’t be good for anyone — but chances are, guys aren’t terribly religious about slathering on sunscreen either. So yep, we got plenty of that items that meet those needs, alright. If you’re a guy, great — and if you’re a girl trying to get your guy to finally care about their skin, even better.

1. Biotherm Aquapower X’mas Set, $65, available at Biotherm stores
Look, you go for a run and then down a bottle of water after right, because your body needs it? Well, consider this hydration for your skin. The range is perfect for keeping dry skin quenched and hydrated, with lightweight textures and a cooling sensation to boot.
2. LAB SERIES Solid Water Essence, $84, available at LAB SERIES Stores and labseries.beautystop.com.sg
We can see this being especially useful in the morning — before a meeting or an eventful day ahead — simply because it promises to jumpstart tired-looking skin with energizing ingredients such as ginseng and caffeine. The unique gel-to-liquid formula also ensures it’s a fuss-free way of having this sink into your skin right away.
3. LANEIGE Homme Active Water Moisturizer, $36, available at LANEIGE boutiques and counters
Most skincare ranges for men tend to be simple but effective, and this is no exception — the line focuses on technology that locks moisture into the skin while protecting it from external irritants to protect against further damage. This gel lotion can be quickly absorbed into the skin too, so you’ll feel like you’re fresh out of the shower.
4. Shiseido Men Hydromaster Coffret $56, available at Shiseido counters
This would make a good starter kit for the men in your life — there’s a cleansing foam to get rid of the grime, a lightweight hydrating gel that refines the skin while also targeting the appearance of pores, and also contains the all-important sunscreen. Hands up if you know a guy who doesn’t see the need for it? Yep.

5. OUAI Matte Pomade, $36, available at Sephora
Now, this one’s a pretty universal product, but we figured the guys could use something that looks great sitting on the shelf too. The finishing paste tames unruly hair ends and works on both long and short hairstyles so you can mould your mane without it looking too stiff.
6. Kiehl’s Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream, $35, available at Kiehl’s stores
For all skin types, especially if you have sensitive or oily skin, this unscented shave cream contains aloe vera to soothe and repair, and ensures a smooth shave while you’re at it too.
7. Kat Food Katman Beard Oil, $27.90, available at ilovekatfood.com
If you know someone lucky enough to grow a full beard, bless them with this nifty thing! There’s no way anything can really tame the wild mane, but how about conditioning it, and the skin underneath, so it’s always shiny and replendous? Kat Food’s beard oil contains cedarwood, grapefruit and eucalyptus essential oils, to keep those manly tresses looking their best.

8. Ralph Lauren Polo Blue Deodorant EDT Set, $129, available at Ralph Lauren stores and fragrance counters
For the classic guy who always looks so freshly put together, he won’t be able to resist this fragrance and deodorant duo. The scent’s a lush blend of aquatic accords combined with basil, verbana and sage, and then the comforting notes of washed suede, moss and a sheer musk.

9. Hugo Boss BOSS BOTTLED, $102, available at major departmental stores
The bottle itself’s a statement of boldness and power, with an impressive chrome finish to match its interior; this aroma’s fresh at first, though with a strong floral-spicy heart that’s rounded off with a warm, woody base of sandalwood and vetiver. Overall, the perfect masculine scent for the contemporary guy.
10. LUSH Kalamazoo Beard and Facial Wash, $45, available at LUSH stores
Consider this an all-in-one! You can use this creamy wash all over your face, but specifically, to get the dirt and oil (and god knows what other strange items) off your face. Fresh pineapple juice cleanses the skin, while almond oil, jojoba oil and cupuaçu butter help soften and condition your pride and joy.

Guccify Your Wardrobe With These Exclusive Cruise 2018 Pieces At DSM Today

Gucci’s sense of humour has landed itself to becoming one of the most lusted after luxury labels today. From customisable suits and sneakers to strategic collaborations with artists like Dapper Dan and Gucci Ghost, it’s no wonder there’s something for everyone to take away from it. One of the highlights from its recent Cruise 2018 and SS18 shows was its reclaiming of counterfeit culture by engraving really cheesy off-brand titles like “Guccy” and “Guccify” onto its apparel, almost acknowledging how important the brand is to streetwear culture and using its ubiquity as the aesthetic inspiration for the collection.
Now, you can also buy into that subversion of luxury with the launch of several exclusive Gucci Cruise 2018 pieces at all Dover Street Markets around the world.

Gucci Cruise 2018 x DSM Men’s

Trying to dissect a Gucci collection piece by piece is like trying to categorise clothing in a vintage store. There’s knits there’s embroidery there’s crazy prints, but somehow all the pieces seem to cohere in this oddly manic manner. We love Alessandro Michele, creative director of the house’s fearless flamboyance that’ve emboldened even the most masculine souls, both in the celebrity sphere as well as people in real life.

Gucci Cruise 2018 x DSM Women’s

Notice how there’s barely a distinction between the men’s and women’s collections? Be it a brilliant marketing tactic or sheer lack of concern for gender differentiation, we’re certainly going to mix and match our favourite Gucci pieces and clash prints or wear full suits — either option still ends up in a rainbow explosion, but that’s kind of the whole point!
The Gucci Cruise 2018 x DSM collection is available at Dover Street Market London, Ginza, Tokyo, New York City, Singapore and IT Beijing from today, with each design sold in limited quantity.
