Moosehead Revamps Their Menu – This Time With More Regional And Asian Inspirations

Moosehead has been sitting in an obscure corner of Telok Ayer for the past 4 years, but it’s anything but quiet once you step into the place. Founded by a dad and son duo, Glen and Daniel Ballis, who has been constantly on the go, Moosehead has been slowly developing its own style of cuisine. What initially started out as a Mediterranean restaurant has evolved into a place where all sorts of global cuisines and flavours meet, resulting in a menu full of flavourful inspirations hailing from all corners of the world because of all the traveling that Glen and Daniel have under their belts. Even the place itself boasts quirky furnishings to match their eccentrically delicious food.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t try everything on the menu (our stomachs are only that big), but here are our top 5 dishes to try from the latest dinner menu additions. The dishes were designed to be shared, so bring a couple of friends and order loads of things so you get to have a little bit of everything, just like how you would at a tapas bar.
By Michelle Ng

1. Octopus, $30

moosehead-9
The one dish which I will always brave the crowds at Telok Ayer for. I love octopus, but it’s not a dish I eat often because most places don’t cook it very well, resulting in tough meat that taste rubbery. Moosehead does a fine job cooking their octopus  sous-vide style before grilling them so you get a nice crisp crunch with every bite and a little bit of charring (probably from the use of the grill. Oh, and they only use the tentacles, so you won’t have to worry about huge chunks of octopus that requires a lot of chewing. The cubed potatoes were a fantastic side to pair with the octopus, even though they deserve to have its own dish. Deep fried to perfection, the potatoes are served with a red pepper puree that balances the flavours.
I loved the octopus with a slight citrusy kick by squeezing the lime that came with the dish. Depending on how you like your octopus, you can leave out the lime – but just remember to at least try it before leaving it out!

2. O’Connor Beef Sirloin, $62

moosehead-2
How much do you love your meat? This sirloin cut flew in all the way from Ireland, which is not a very common place to get your beef from, but it surprisingly works. If you love marbling, this cut might not be right for you. The beef is grass fed, which means that there isn’t much marbling or fat in the meat. I like my meat done medium-well, and they cooked it just right – not too rare, but not cooked until the meat is too tough either. Dip your meat into the mushroom ketchup, with is blitzed Swiss brown mushrooms in puree form that adds an added layer of flavour to the meat. For those who prefer lamb or gamier meat, the lamb chops might be a better choice than the beef.

3. Fried Artichokes, $12

moosehead-6
If you can get me to love my veggies, it means that you are doing something right. I’m really picky with food, especially when it comes to vegetables. Fried artichokes are pretty easy to make, but hard to perfect. These artichokes were basically perfection – shatteringly crisp outside, but tender inside and is exactly like how potato chips should taste like. Paired with the taramasalata sauce and salmon roe, this would make a good drinking snack. I could easily snack on an entire plate of these artichokes all night long!

4. INKA Fried Eggs, $12

moosehead-8
Did I just put fried eggs on a top 5 dishes list? Yes I did, and you will love it too. Served in a cast iron pan, the eggs are soft enough to dip the crunchy bread into. A humble but hearty dish, you’ll never tire of this simple dish. Of course, it’s not only bread and eggs – the eggs are served with diced chorizo and garlic aoli that will make you wish you had more bread and more stomach space just so you can eat a mountain of bread and eggs all day long.

5. Burrata, $21

moosehead-5
You might be questioning whoever is willing to spend $21 on a plate of cheese, but this will be one of the best plates of cheese you’ve ever eaten. Trust us on this. The unassuming bowl of cheese will arrive, pretty colourless except for the crisp curry leaves sprinkled atop, but the taste will grow on you the more you eat it. It’s also pretty light as a starter or a side dish, considering that Mediterranean cuisine loves using spices in their food. Shoutout to the mini-balls of house pickled zucchini that really elevates the dish from a ‘normal plate of cheese’ to ‘wow, this is a good plate of cheese’.

Bonus: Banana Ice Cream, $10

moosehead-16
Technically this was a dessert, not a dish, so the banana ice cream doesn’t count as part of the top 5 dishes! If you’ve still got time for a quick dessert, get some banana ice cream to cleanse your palette. The house-made ice cream is pretty light and is paired with a salted caramel foam to chase away any lingering spices you have left on your tastebuds. Even though it was inspired by jemput-jemput (fried banana cakes, but NOT goreng pisang), it tastes nothing like the Malaysian kueh, and more like a deconstructed banana crumble, no thanks to the cookie crumbles.

Moosehead is at 110 Telok Ayer St, S068579, and is open from Monday to Friday from 12pm-2.30pm and 6pm-10.30pm, and Saturday from 6pm-10.30pm. All dishes are available on the dinner menu.

Actually Taste Christmas In Magnum's Latest Ice Cream Flavours

Bells jingle for only two reasons worth craning our necks out our bedroom windows for: to inaugurate the wondrous spirit of the holidays, and the passing by of an ice cream man wheeling his cart of sweet desserts. We’re doing a double take this Christmas (which is, let’s acknowledge, is less than two weeks away!) because Magnum is launching three new ice cream and coffee flavours. We reckon that if these treats were enjoyed all at once, they could give a sugar rush high enough for Santa and his elves to power through delivering presents to children around the world all within the wee hours of Christmas morning!
Magnum Festive Collection - Make My Magnum

Pomegranate Dreams, Naughty and Spice, Fruity Wonderland Flavours

Try Pomegranate Dreams for the perfect blend between sweet and sour. We all like the classic white chocolate-coated shell of a Magnum cone or stick, but this promises to make your mouth water as you bite into it for its pomegranate and pomelo bits which are pretty on sight but burst into tiny explosions of zests as you chew into them.
Or get into (that’s what she said!) Naughty and Spice that’s not just a spin on the popular holiday catchphrase; the savouriness of salted egg yolk and grated cheese makes for an unexpected but totally rockin’ combination with milk chocolate ice cream. And what’s spice without chilli flakes to flirt with your tongue?
How about Fruity Wonderland, which reminds us immediately of Vanellope von Schweetz of the Sugar Rush arcade game from our favourite Pixar animation Wreck-It Ralph. Every natural sweet you can think of lies atop this delectable delight, from maraschino cherries to fruit cake crumble (we know — it sounds so good though). All ice creams are decorated with gold nugget sprinkles, so they look super luxurious and Instagram-mable too!
Magnum Festive Collection - Magnum Coffees

Peppermint Mocha — $8 hot & $9 iced, Hazelnut Latte — $6 hot & $7 iced

If the weather outside is just too frightful for ice cream, warm yourself up with Magnum’s Peppermint and Hazelnut Latte. They’re created with notes of familiar flavours we can all get into, while keeping us awake all night as we await Santa tunnel down our chimneys.
Magnum’s Festive ice cream is available only at Magnum’s flagship Pleasure store at ION Orchard. You can find more about Magnum’s ice cream here.

This Matte Liquid Lipstick Stays Put Even After a Make Out Session

Since liquid lipsticks entered the beauty realm and exploded in popularity, we’ve tossed the gloss and got ourselves hooked on the matte variety. Even if we already own 7 liquid lipsticks in that “perfect” shade of nude, there is always room for one more. We’re guilty of the occasional splurge, but it’s hard to resist, especially since it delivers rich, opaque colour with incredible staying power.

Screen Shot 2017-12-01 at 12.49.04 PM

It isn’t always love at first swipe, though. A matte liquid lipstick can sometimes translate to a dry, uncomfortable clump of uneven pigment that fades and flakes on us. And depending on the texture, manoeuvring a pigmented liquid formula across the lips could get real messy, especially in the hands of a novice. This is why we’re on a perpetual hunt for the best ones on the market, and we’ve recently discovered an affordable drugstore option that rivals the quality of our high-end holy grails: Rimmel London’s Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour.

8

Rimmel’s formula goes on silky smooth, dries to a comfortable matte finish that feels weightless on the lips, and stays on for 12 hours – all thanks to its revamped liquid formula. That velvety texture is created with unique vegetable-derived emollients to keep your lips hydrated, and when polymers are whisked in, it helps the formula adhere to your lips better, which is why this touch-proof and waterproof lip colour won’t come off even after you’ve made out with someone. Now, that’s something most liquid lipsticks can’t promise.

Rita Ora wears the Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour in #810 Plum This Show

If there’s one person who knows how to rock a power lip, it’s Rimmel’s brand ambassador Rita Ora, and she’s definitely inspired us to go bold with our shade picks. With 12 intense colours that include a vibrant red, a punchy plum, an electric sapphire blue, and a goth-inspired black, you can take your entire look much further in a pigmented swipe. Its lustrous pigments deliver a bold, high-impact hue in one coat, so you don’t have to go in for multiple colour retouches.

Don’t worry if you’re not into those edgy hues, though. There’s plenty of rose-tinted pinks and flattering nudes to go around, so you’ll definitely find your next everyday lip colour in the lineup. So, even if you aren’t a matte lip devotee, we’re pretty sure this will make you a convert, since it already has for some of the new friends we made in our latest edition of NYLON Takes It To The Streets. We roamed around Bugis Junction to give away Rimmel’s Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colours and put its kiss-proof claim to the test. A couple of them even tried out the blue and black shades! 😱 Have a look at how the liquid lippies fared:

Of course, no bold lip is complete without a complementary eye look, which is why we’ve turned to Rimmel London’s new and improved Magnifi’Eyes Eye Contouring Palettes for a bit of help. There’s 3 shade palettes to choose from, each with 12 on-trend colours and a nifty double-ended sponge-brush applicator.

For those who love a good smoky eye, the Smoke Edition is it. While the palette doesn’t have all 50 shades of grey, it does include the most modern ones in dove, pewter, slate, silver, and charcoal.

NYLON’s Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide: You Can Call Her Queen B

You might not wanna admit it, but every girl clique has one; the Taylor Swift of the hot celebrity/supermodel Taylor Swift squad, the Beyoncé of Destiny’s Child, the Kim of the Kardashian clan, and the Blair Waldorf of Manhattan’s elite. She’s brilliant, gorgeous, successful, talented, confident, and with fine taste and a glorious wardrobe that matches it. The only downside you kinda gleefully admit though? Yeah alright, she might be a little *whispers* basic, what with her unbridled love for pumpkin spice lattes and overuse of the dog face filter on Snapchat — but who cares! Love or hate her, refuse to like her Instagram posts but still stalk her #OOTDs anyway, she’s the undeniable It-Girl, who really already has everything you see, so what can, oh humble gift-giver, bestow upon her? Sleep in This Cute Chinchilla Bed That Looks Like Studio Ghibli’s Totoro

It goes without saying that Japan is the land of kawaii. And China is the copycat equivalent. The latter’s counterfeit rep has somewhat faded in recent years, but is back in full force with this “Chinchilla Bed”, a ridiculously cute futon that is surely a knock-off of Studio Ghibli’s titular character, Totoro, from My Neighbour Totoro.

TB2dcH4jFXXXXbVXXXXXXXXXXXX_!!61905023

Looking every single bit like Totoro, with the exception of fluffy grey fur, this China-made bed is available from sites like Taobao and Ali Express, and is probably the reason why it has so far managed to skirt awkward copyright issues. Oh, and the slightly off facial features played a part in going through a legal loophole too.
TB2SDZajFXXXXaaXXXXXXXXXXXX_!!61905023

Still, despite the lack of originality, it’s hard to deny that the bed is something you wouldn’t want to snuggle in. There’s a tiny slit (resembling a kangaroo’s pouch) that you can tuck yourself in, and it looks just like the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday at home, whether you’re on a Netflix binge, or reading a really good book.
TB2qMTQjFXXXXavXpXXXXXXXXXX_!!61905023-1

And it’s incredibly affordable too. The largest futon in this range, which measures 2.4-metres by 2-metres, and is bigger than a Super King Size bed, only costs 552 yuan (approximately $112) – a real steal if you ask us. It also includes Chinchilla cushions and a detachable tail, which would make for a really great bolster.
TB2c9r2jFXXXXcvXXXXXXXXXXXX_!!61905023

So if you don’t mind not getting legit Totoro merchandise, then this adorable futon bed will more than suffice. At the very least, this is the closest you’ll get to recreating that famous scene where Mei falls asleep on Totoro’s furry belly in the movie. Interested? Head over to Tabao’s website now.

Casio’s Latest Action Cam is the G-SHOCK of the Photography World

Let’s face it – the tech world is filled with flimsy, easily broken products that will never stand a chance against a solid concrete floor, and cameras undoubtedly belong to that fragile category. With the exception of the Nokia 3310, few gadgets lack military-grade level of protection; although that could all soon change thanks to Casio.
The Japanese brand recently launched the G’z EYE Tough Camera – a robust action camera that’s pretty much like a G-SHOCK with a lens. It’s shock-resistant, waterproof, dustproof, and built to withstand low temperatures, so it’s kind of like the Arnold Schwarzenegger of photo-taking devices (in his Terminator prime, of course).

GZE-1_F

And it goes without saying that it’s built to last. Designed for extreme sports like BMX, skateboarding, snowboarding, and surfing, the G’z EYE can withstand drops of up to four-metres (that’s almost as tall as an overhead bridge), survive an underwater depth of 50-metres, while performing at temperatures as low as -10°C.
洞窟

It’s basically almost unbreakable, despite not packing the best specs (shooting 1080p at 30fps, 480p at 120fps, and 6-megapixel photos isn’t mind-blowing, to be honest). Nevertheless, it has a super-wide-angle lens that captures a 190.8° (still image) and 170.4° (movie) field of view, so it is decent.
Сoncrete wall. Large concrete wall. Texture.

Throw in the fact that the camera is modeled after a stylish G-SHOCK watch, and it’s more or less worth the purchase if you dig that Casio aesthetic. Right now, the G’z EYE is retailing for $629 and is available at Casio and G-Factory stores, authorised retailers, and superstores, including Best Denki and Harvey Norman.
In related news, Casio’s TR-M11 selfie cam is shaped just like a compact mirror.

NYLON’s Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide: The Honest-To-Wellness Fitspo Friend

This one should be familiar — you’ve got that person in your life who’s always opting for avocado toasts and açaí bowls, not for the ‘gram but because they actually believe in it. He/she reads the labels on every item at the supermarket and is always ready to educate you on what you’re haplessly ingesting (read: it’s never good), and the one who extolls the value of coconut oil’s multiple uses in their lives. True story.
So here’s one for all the yoga enthusiasts, healthy living advocates, and the people who actually don’t waste their gym memberships, just because they’ve made barre/crossfit/hot yoga and whatever trendy fitness regime part of their daily lives. The ones who don’t actually go crazy over the insanity workout. And yep, that awesome gym buddy who’s constantly there to cheer you on.

Swensen’s Singapore to Launch Star Wars Ice Cream Cakes

The Star Wars fever is well and truly underway. Fans are getting excited and brands are taking advantage, rolling out marketing campaigns quicker than it takes Usain Bolt to complete a 100-metre sprint. To be honest, it’s becoming a little overwhelming, though we can make an exception for Swensen’s.
The restaurant chain will launch on Dec 15 (one day after the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi), an incredibly cool range of Star Wars ice cream cakes, with eight new designs, featuring iconic characters from the film like Rey, Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, and BB-8. These are additions to an existing range of over 40 Star Wars illustrations.
Check out all the designs below:

And good news Star Wars fans, the cakes are pretty affordably priced too, retailing at $52. What’s even cooler is that you can select a combination of two decadent Swensen’s ice cream flavours out of 21, from Sticky Chewy Chocolate, to Salted Gula Melaka, and Chocolate Peanut Buttercup.
If you’d like to purchase them, orders can be made at any Swensen’s or Earle Swensen’s outlet, via Cooline at 6788 8128 or online at swensens.com.sg.

Let Your Makeup Do The Talking This Festive Season With 3INA's Alchemy Collection

This year, it’s all about the glitter and the glow, so harness your inner goddess to steal all the attention at those end-of-year parties. 3INA, who just hit our shores a couple of months ago, promised to not only deliver new products every month, but also to keep up with all the trends. Just in time for the festive season, 3INA launched a limited edition Alchemy Collection full of cosmic, iridescent colours. Just when we thought we were done with all the Christmas drops, 3INA drops an absolutely gorgeous collection that makes us want to open our empty wallets.

For cosmic eyes

There’s nothing like some eyeshadow to really pack a punch. The eyeshadows come in loose particles, which makes building up on the colour so much easier as compared to a pressed eyeshadow that comes in a palette. For even more intense colour, you can wet your brushes to apply it – just remember to use a primer or you’ll have pigments falling all over your face.

For those long lashes

One step into 3INA, and you’ll probably fall in love with the bright, bold colours that line the walls. Even their coloured mascaras come in colours like purple and pink that will make putting on your makeup extra fun. For the Alchemy Collection, 3INA has released a beautiful spectral mascara that will give your lashes a coat of light altering pigments that will change gradual colours as the light reflects off them. If the formula is the same as their liquid eyeliners, you can be sure that your lashes are given a touch of elegance with some iridescence.

For the lovely puckers

These lip vinyls go on smoothly for a shining, vibrant colour. Reeking of those 90s days when shiny lipstick was in, 3INA’s intense pigmentation in their lip products still hasn’t let us down yet. Pick from the classic cherry red, a dark mulberry or a lovely blush pink that’ll look perfect on a fair complexions.

For that GLOW

Not only does this magical elixir cover up all your spots and brightens up your complexion, it also gives you a lovely glow (not in a your-face-is-too-oily way) without having to layer up on the highlighter. One product lesser for you to buy!

Game of Thrones Season 8 Premiere to Only Air in 2019

Winter is coming? Hell yeah, it is. But it’s going to be late, according to Sophie Turner, who recently revealed in an interview with Variety that the highly anticipated season 8 premiere will happen only in 2019, even though filming for the program’s penultimate run has already begun. Bummer, we know.
Still, there is a sliver of hope, albeit just the teeniest bit. HBO has yet to confirm any airdate, although programming president Casey Bloys previously stated, “They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule. We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.”

jon snow daenerys tagaryen game of thrones finale boat

Almost another two years before we see these two

And so, our watch for season 8 begins. At least we’ll be comforted with the knowledge that each episode of the final season will be feature-film length (to put things into perspective, the season seven finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf”, was 79 minutes and 43 seconds long), so this is definitely a case of quality over quantity.

What we also know is that the final six episodes of GoT will be directed by David Nutter, Miguel Sapochnik, and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, so quality will not be compromised. If you feel that 2019 is way too long for your medieval TV urges, why not check out Knightfall – a brand new television series that follows the conquest and chaos of the Knights Templar.
Till GoT season 8 debuts, stick with us for more updates.

Laneway Festival 2018 Sees An Increasingly Diverse Range Of Asian Acts For Their Singapore Edition

The annual hipster festival, St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival has finally announced their regional acts for the Singapore 2018 stop. While the main headliners are more or less the same as the ones who take the stage in the Australia and New Zealand Laneway dates, the Singapore date usually sees a wider range of Asian and local acts. Earlier this year, Laneway announced all their headliners – with hip hop collective Anderson .Paak And The Free Nationals, alternative rock band Wolf Alice, electronica producer Bonobo and indie rock sextet The War on Drugs as some of the more anticipated bands.
This year sees a diverse range of eight Asian artists from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. Noticeably missing from the lineup are any Japanese acts despite the massive turnout from the two first ever Japanese singers KOHH and Wednesday Campanella to perform at Laneway earlier this year, but we’ll just have to make do with the rest of the other regional acts. Give them a chance because you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Check out the eight regional acts (in alphabetical order) below.

Here’s the entire lineup that Laneway has in store for you punters – you might not recognise many of the names if you have very mainstream music tastes, but you can be reassured that these are all the best of the best, especially when it comes to the rising stars! After all, Laneway has never really let us down with their music choices (we can’t really say the same about the weather), so you can be absolutely sure that you’ll be in for a good time.

Christmas Gift Ideas Under $50 for the Budget-Conscious

Not that we’re a scrooge or advocate being a scrooge, but the year-end festive season often means shopping season as we scramble to tick things off our gift lists. That means a flurry of picking gifts, wrapping them (inexpertly), and then scribbling a quick note before mailing them off.

More often than not, we end up buying generic gifts because we 1) don’t have enough time, b) aren’t close to the recipients, c) need to be efficient in preparing all the gifts, or d) just have no idea anymore.

If you’re just getting started on your Christmas shopping and are worried that your wallet may take a huge hit this season, fret not! There are ways to get through the gifting season without busting your budget.

Shop These ZALORA Pieces In Pantone's 2018 Colour of The Year

We’re no soothsayers, but we certainly do our best to hunt down trend predictions farthest in the future as we can. We’ve just found out that Pantone, the world’s biggest company for — let’s say it — colour, just announced their endorsement for 2018’s colour of the year.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a job naming colours? We’ve heard of millennial pink and blood orange (thank you Project Runway!) but ultra violet’s definitely stealing the cake for cutest name of a colour this moment. In fact, we predicted earlier this year that lavender would very quickly dethrone millennial pink, so… you’re welcome, Pantone?
We kid. Since they’ve said it, we’re already counting down to when the streets will be filled with seas of ultra violet and sneaker companies co-opting the colour into their classic styles. To beat everybody to the punch, we’ve selected some of our favourite ultra violet (okay, shades of) pieces from ZALORA and have a discount code so you can fit all these items into your fashion budget!

purple
Dorothy Pekins Purple Collarless Shirt $49.90, Dorothy Perkins Crepe Paperbag Trousers $69.90, Wallis Purple Shift Dress $89.90

We love an off-duty look that’s still appropriate in the workplace. One way to flaunt this collarless shirt is to tuck it into jeans and rock a pair of kitten heels to look Parisian-chic. Or pair this gaucho-waist pants that look damn comfortable but has a tapered bottom to accentuate the ankles. Dresses are a no-brainer for uninspired days, but this shift dress is bold enough to convey a fashion statement without the fuss of overthinking.

accessories
Calvin Klein Littleton 28″ 4 Wheels Hard Case Luggage Purple $166, Michael Kors Mini Darci Purple Watch MK3725 $449, Shiseido Makeup Paperlight Cream Eye Color VI304 (Shobu Purple) 6g $35

If shades of purple don’t jive well with your wardrobe, how about plastering this trend on your accessories and makeup? Airports aren’t necessarily where we put our best feet forward with our dressing, but it’s the accents in our ensembles that make us stand out. This Calvin Klein luggage looks so luxurious because of nothing else besides its shade of purple. Don’t leave your wrists empty; Michael Kors watches are pretty, but this in particular sounds off all our alarms, perfect to wear when we’re pointing at shooting stars in the night sky. We love makeup that ties in with fashion, so if you dare, try on this purple eye tint to match complementary pieces of our outfit.
