ColourPop Released Their First-Ever Loose Highlighter And It’s Super Glowy

We always go gaga over everything ColourPop does, but it’s hard not to when all their launches are so easy to fall in love with. If you’ve already forgotten, this year alone has already seen their: “I Think I Love You” Fall palette with pumpkin spice shades, their crushed crystal collection that actually contains real crushed crystals, and the Blotted Lip that works as a subtle matte lip stain.

Now ColourPop has released their first-ever loose highlighters – known as the Luster Dust collection – and it comes in the colours of: Gnomie, a light rose gold almost champagne pink; Aura Voir, a peachy-gold; and Dew Drop, a rich bronze with a festive golden glow. Most powder highlighters come pressed tightly in compacts – loose highlighter like this comes in a soft powder with high shine particles, and will help you look as shimmery as you like.

Swatches across different skin tones.

They do claim that “a little goes a long way, so just a touch will have you glowing all day long”. The texture looks like there’s multi-dimensional glitter, so it comes across to be quite pigmented. Each loose highlighter is currently on sale at USD4.90 (thanks to an extended Cyber Monday), but its normal price at USD7 is affordable and wouldn’t break the bank.

There is free global shipping over USD50, otherwise it’s USD9.99 for any purchase. International orders can take up to 10 to 21 business days. You can shop the loose highlighters here or visit their official website.

Rep Kurt Cobain's Favourite Court Sneakers, The Bata Hotshot

If there’s one thing Kurt Cobain probably would’ve never guessed he’d leave a legacy behind of, it’s fashion. From raggedy flannels to dressing long-sleeve tees under short-sleeved ones, Cobain somehow managed to influence his fans to dress like him despite his nonchalance over what he wore as a singer. One of our style favourites still applicable today were his beaters, and very soon Nirvana fans everywhere can wear the exact model of sneakers Cobain often rocked onstage.

The Bata Hotshot, a classic court sneaker with an arrow logo more commonly seen on the streets during the 1970’s has made a resurgence in Bata’s AW17 collection.

A Guide To Christmas Shopping With Elizabeth Arden's Gift Sets

Half the fun of Christmas comes from receiving gifts, and the other half of the fun is when you’re buying the gifts. They can be gifts for your friends and family (or yourself – we’re not judging), but the simple joy of shopping and browsing all these products brings about a joy that we simply cannot put into words. For us girls, skincare and beauty is always a safe choice because chances are that we’ll probably use it. In fact, we might just secretly be dying to try it – we just don’t want to spend on it ourselves.
Instead of blowing all your money on standalone beauty products, beauty gift sets usually mean you get more than your money’s worth because its cheaper. Also, the assortment of products make the receiver feel like they’ve won the beauty lottery. From skincare sets to a makeup collection, introduce your friends to the beauty of Elizabeth Arden, where you’ll definitely be able to find something for everyone amongst all their Christmas sets. While you’re at it, Elizabeth Arden will also be hosting a series of workshops for you to pamper yourself with. We’ve compiled the best Elizabeth Arden sets according who will love them to make them easier for you to do your Christmas shopping!

For the makeup junkie – Holiday Blockbuster 15-Piece Set, $149 (worth $1,082)

Med-A0108544_A0108545_flattened_CAM (2)
This is the ultimate makeup kit that will have you set for the next year (or three months for the mascara since that’s how long you should be using your mascara for). The Holiday Blockbuster includes 15 pieces of makeup which will have everything you need to dress yourself up for the festive season ahead, including an eyeshadow palette with 16 shades, a blush and highlight palette, eyeliner, mascara, four lipstick colours, two lip glosses, and three brushes. If you ever needed a huge storage solution for all your makeup – this would be the perfect present because the gift set comes in a huge red storage case. Easily store everything including those bulky looking eyeshadow palettes that never fits into your makeup cabinet, and you can easily just zip up everything up on-the-go. This entire collection is probably the best steal, as the products are worth over $1000 individually, but you can get it all for just $149!

For your lovely mothers and mother-in-laws – ADVANCED Ceramide Capsules 90-Piece and Day Cream Set, $254 (worth $336)

For that sun-loving cousin or colleague – Prevage Anti-Aging Eye Essentials, $204 (worth $320)

Med-A0108354_EU_NEW_flattened (1)

It’s always good to start thinking about your anti-aging routine early, especially for your eye area. The eye area is very susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles, and the under-eye area usually tends to dry out faster; even more so for those who uses concealer to cover up your dark spots. The Prevage line specialises in targeting wrinkles and sun damage, so this set is perfect for those who want to work an anti-aging routine into their normal skincare routine. You’ll get an Anti-Aging Eye Serum, an Anti-Aging Daily Serum and Moisture Cream SPF30++.

For those who want to summon their inner Queen Bee – Red Door EDT Deluxe set, $129 (worth $129)

Med-A0108482_flattened

So maybe your friend just not that into makeup or not at that age where they require an anti-aging routine. But we’re pretty sure that everyone uses shower gel. Elizabeth Arden has put together a set featuring another classic scent – the Red Door scent, and you’ll get a bottle of Red Door EDT Spray, a Perfumed Body Lotion and a Bath & Shower Gel. With the musky, floral scent that was inspired by the Red Door Spa Center in 1989, you’ll make a powerful entrance at every time of the day.

For the sensitive soul – Eight Hour Cream Fragrance Free Protectant Set, $60 (worth $91)

Med-A0109345_APO_A0109346_US_flattened (1)

Living in a humid country where its pretty much summer all year round can do a lot of harm to your skin. The Eight Hour range helps to safeguard against all sorts of weather conditions. The set gives you an Eight Hour Skin Protectant that is free from all fragrance for sensitive skin people, an Eight Hour Lip Protectant Stick with SPF15++, and an Eight Hour Cream Intensive Moisturising Hand Treatment. There is no excuse to deprive your skin of the care that it needs!

I’m Really Vibing With The New Jabra Elite Sport Wireless Earbuds

Earlier this year, I got my hands on the Bragi Dash earphones. They were a novelty at the time; they were earphones with no cables — not even a connecting wire — and it was the first time I was trying on such a pair. They weren’t perfect though; I had some trouble setting it up and getting a good fit in the ear. Then earlier this month, B&O had their super sleek version — the Beoplay E8, which I also reviewed, and really wanted to love, but didn’t. Read the review to find out why.
So I approached this Jabra pair with some skepticism. If B&O can’t get it right, I thought there was little hope for everyone else. Apparently I put B&O on too high a pedestal, because these Jabra ones are so magnificent, I can actually say that I can’t live without them in my life now. And full disclosure: this isn’t a paid advertorial; it’s just an honest review from my perspective.
By Adele Chan
The Jabra Elite Sport may not be as sleek as the Beoplay E8 (it’s really hard to beat B&O in the design game), but they aren’t too shabby either. The charging case is still pretty compact, and fits into handbags and pockets easily.

The earbuds sport wingtips that fit well and comfortably into the ear, securing the earbuds in place. It’s a good design — I wore these and ran for 30 minutes without the need to adjust them! The left side has the volume buttons, while the right activates the Jabra sporting app, and pauses / starts music. It’s a simple and intuitive setup with tactile buttons that you can feel and won’t accidentally press. The earbuds are also light and not bulky like many of the other brands with a similar offering.

SOUND:

These Jabras won’t give you the best or the worst sound. It’s decent for its price and purpose (for sports / every day use); mids are clear and importantly, not muddy. And although you won’t get that super shiok bass and crisp highs from high-end earphone models, the Elite Sports’ overall sound is well balanced. At the end of the day, they sound much better than Apple AirPods. So if you’re an AirPod user and can deal with its sound quality, these Jabra ones will sound like heaven.

USER EXPERIENCE:

Pairing with the new iPhone X was a painless experience. It was instant, and now every time I open the charging case, the earbuds light up and automatically and immediately connect to the phone. It’s convenient and the way wireless technology should be.
There’s an app that tracks heart rate and fitness levels. It also offers in-ear coaching — a function I have yet to really try out, since I’m tracking fitness on the Apple Watch instead.

Screen Shot 2017-11-28 at 4.29.19 PM

So not only do these sit tight in the ear, they are also waterproof! I took them into the pool with me and for the first time ever, I swam to the tunes of Daft Punk. NOTE: when the earbuds are submerged under the water, they disconnect; but they reconnect when out of water. It was both shocking and annoying the first few times it happened, but I’ve since come to accept that no earphones can be perfect. If you know of waterproof earphones that can stay connected underwater, leave a comment here for us!

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY

The Jabra Elite Sport retails at $368 and comes in an all black version, and a grey/green combo. At $368, I think it’s a fair price. The Bragi retailed at $428 (it appears to have dropped in price to $238 here), while the Beoplay E8 is $429. I really do like that I can take these Jabras into the pool with me, and I can run without fear of them dropping out. Also, the sound is decent and connection is stable; so yes, BUY!

The Pokémon Run Carnival Is Back Next Year

The Pokémon Run Carnival is back for its second edition next year on Saturday, 27 Jan. With a choreographed Pikachu dance performance, Pokémon-type themed inflatables, and carnival games and foods – it’s not like any other 5km run we know.

image

Besides spotting different Pokémon species during your run, there will be trials and challenges for runners to overcome. But since the race is open to all participants aged 4 and above, we’re thinking the challenges can’t be too…challenging. Well, if they are, you can always register as a pair and tackle those challenges together.

Cuteness overload!!!!! #pikachuparade #pokemonrun #pikachu #pokemon #frontrowseats

A post shared by Enjoy The Little Things! (@mrdavishuang) on

It’s set on the scenic grounds of Gardens By The Bay, and your race route includes zones that are themed after various Pokémon types – and yes, that means fire, water, electricity, and grass. Considering that almost 6,000 people attended the first Pokémon Run Carnival (accompanied by life-size Pikachus), it looks like 2018 will be the year to step up your workup game and join at least one run.
image

If not, those who want to enjoy all things Pokémon, but without the leg cramps and sweat, can join in at the Pokémon Carnival where carnival games and activities will be held. Although entrance is free, you need to purchase Pokétickets to enjoy the games, activities, and food. Pokétickets are priced at $10 each with a minimum purchase of 2 sheets.

What an amazing morning for #pokemonrunsg #pokemonrunsg2017 thank you for having us!!! #emceecorde

You’ve Tried Ah Mah’s Castella Cake But Have You Tried It In Matcha?

We admit: we went a bit crazy for these jiggly sponge cakes too but how could you resist? They’re pretty much the ideal sponge cake – pillowy in appearance, moist in taste, and as light as air in texture.
From 1 to 31 Dec 2017, Ah Mah Handmade Cake will include Matcha to its lineup of flavours as an exclusive Christmas special. Priced at $11, the Matcha cake is meant to have a “full-bodied taste along with earthy notes”, and even a “lingering tea fragrance”. It comes in a festive-themed bright green box – Santa motif and all.

Screen Shot 2017-11-28 at 12.34.45 PM
The castella cake now comes in Matcha flavour.

It looks like it’ll be a popular addition to Ah Mah Handmade Cake’s mainstay flavours: Original ($8), Cheese ($11), and Rocky Chocolate ($13).
Since its official launch in July 2017, Ah Mah Handmade Cake has sold over 320,000 cakes in Singapore. Their cakes are made purely with milk, eggs and flour, and they claim that preservatives or colouring aren’t included. Sounds good so far, and another major plus – your castella cake will definitely be piping hot from the oven since all cakes are freshly baked. They claim to discard all unsold cakes after 12 hours too, but then…why not just donate them?

The new Matcha flavour will be available at all 11 Ah Mah Handmade Cake outlets.
You can find them at Bukit Panjang Plaza, VivoCity, Jcube, Paya Lebar Square, Bedok Mall, Plaza Singapura, White Sands, Seletar Mall, Tiong Bahru Plaza, City Square Mall, and their newest outlet at Lot One. Opening Hours: 10am to 10pm daily. Tel: 6325 4508.

Shop Dsquared2's "Be Cool Be Nice" Capsule Collection To Benefit Anti-Bullying

Forget what’s “trendy” — Dsquared2’s always been a brand that’s championed diversity. From clashing prints to playful mixes of masculine-feminine, founders Dean and Dan Caten were challengers of social acceptability long before it became the hip thing to do. Those who felt excluded by the traditional decadence of mens and womenswear could find solace in Dsquared’s soiree of clothing, so it’s no surprise it’s launching a capsule collection in line with “Be Cool Be Nice,” a song, charity organisation, social media campaign and very soon a digital book advocating anti-bullying.

There’s never a better time to stand up for such a cause than now, and in an interview with Vogue UK about their role as designers, it’s clear this issue is dear and close to the Catens: “It truly gave us a voice and helped us in finding a sense of belonging.” A sense of belonging is exactly what many who buy into fashion crave for, and with the Catens’ latest “Be Cool Be Nice” capsule collection, this notion is thoroughly explored.

bcbn
Be Cool Be Nice baseball cap $220, Be Cool Be Nice print sweatshirt $515, Be Cool Be Nice tote bag $445 on Farfetch

It’s a line of slogan activewear and its accessories with the phrase “Be Cool Be Nice,” which especially in the online community stands for something much deeper than its semantics. Gerry DeVeaux, a songwriter and music producer who’s worked for pop stars like Lenny Kravitz and Kylie Minogue created a song of the same name in support of his daughter’s battle with eating disorders and cyberbullying. The song grew bigger than DeVeaux himself into a giant social media campaign with teen role models like Kylie Jenner and Kaia Gerber fronting the movement as endorsers.

When you participate in #bcbn, you’re standing up for social media etiquette which many seem to disregard because of the anonymity of the platform. Additionally, of Dsquared2’s proceeds from its #D2BECOOLBENICE capsule collection will go to the “Be Cool Be Nice” foundation to further the cause of curbing cyberbullying. And if you need a boost from being victimised by a hate crime, take it from the Catens: “You are not alone! You are perfect the way you are. It is important to disengage and ignore bullies. Being strong and brave to be who you are is your biggest asset.”
Dsquared’s “Be Cool Be Nice” capsule collection will be available at Dsquared’s flagship and selected consignment stores end November 2017.

Just tried their Advanced Age Defying Hair Treatment… It features the latest Oxyjet technology, which helps to reactivate up to 80% of dormant hair follicles, accelerate cell regeneration to stimulate hair growth, boost collagen and melanin production to prevent greying hair and reduce hair loss. . After a 2hr pampering hair session which includes the best scalp massage, the result is clear: my scalp feels so fresh and well-cleansed! No more dandruff!! Yayyy. Also, it helps to increase hair growth and reduces premature grey hair. . I’m always impressed by the results from TrichoKare customised hair treatment. I recently tried TrichoKare myself, and I was pleasant surprised by their Award-winning hair and scalp treatment. The trichologist examined my scalp thoroughly to assess all the problems it’s currently facing. Greasiness! Oiliness! And here I was thinking that my scalp suffered from acute dryness, since I sometimes have eczema outbreaks that leave my scalp in a flaky mess.
Using advanced formulation, TrichoKare’s treatments are customised by using premium European herbs – all validated by certified trichologists. The herbs used are proven to have medicinal benefits on the hair and scalp, so that you’ll experience hair growth. One such example is Saw Palemetto, a plant with small berries. It acts as a remedy to hair loss and thinning hair, with an academic study showing that nearly half the participants treated with Saw Palmetto increased their hair count by 11.9 per cent after four months!

TrichoKare’s Tricho-Scan Scalp Analysis magnifies up to 200 times for you to take a look at what your scalp truly looks like.

My friendly trichologist performed a hair and scalp analysis on my scalp and I couldn’t help but cringe as the zoomed-in images popped up on the computer screen. My individual strands of hair were put under the spotlight, along with its many blemishes and uneven scalp surface. TrichoKare’s trichologists are certified and will gladly provide their expert advice – saving us from hair fall and thinning hair.
Each individual strand wasn’t even the same width or thickness – which apparently is a result of certain strands being deprived from essential nutrients. Yep, my hair’s malnourished, which is perplexing since I’ve always had really thick hair. This happens when your scalp is too greasy, and can eventually lead to hair fall and thinning hair.

They then applied a detoxifying masque to my hair, which helps to deeply cleanse my hair and scalp by removing any impurities and excess sebum. It also soothes the scalp to reduce redness and irritation. I then proceeded to have one of the most thorough hair washes I’ve ever had in my life. Complete with a relaxing head massage, gentle scrubbing, and even light rinsing with cold water (this is recommended to get healthier hair!), I almost nodded off and this is before the proper treatment even started.

By using the Nano Ultrasonic Technology, the atomisation process helps stimulate hair growth.

The ultrasonic technology helps break down the HairGRO Ampoule into tiny nanometer particles – it’s gentle, safe, and effective. The atomisation process lets the nutrients in the ampoule penetrate deeper into the scalp, and this helps stimulate hair growth by feeding each follicle. Mine definitely needs lots and lots of nutrients.
The customised treatment helps to:
• Regulate the scalp by removing all the grime, dry flake, and sebum build-up
• Strengthen each hair follicle to improve the cohesion of keratin fibres
• Infuse hair with proteins to increase hair growth to make your hair more dense
• Control hair fall to prevent hair loss in the long run

An infrared therapy session helps improve blood circulation and oxygen flow to your hair follicles.

This intensive regeneration stimulates cell renewal to promote hair growth to restore your hair to its former glory, while also soothing your scalp.

BEFORE (6)
AFTER (5)

Look at the before-and-after! What a massive difference – each follicle opening is now visible and no longer clogged up with impurities and sebum build-up.With clean and open pores, this results in an increased absorption of nutrients and faster hair growth.
I didn’t expect anything less from a place that’s won a ton of awards: TrichoKare reportedly has the Best Volumising Hair Treatment for Thinning Hair, Best Treatment for Hair Loss, and Best Treatment for Damaged Hair – all these from the likes of Singapore Women’s Weekly, ELLE Singapore, and Her World Singapore. Also, there’s a ton of positive online reviews from celebrities and influencers like Xiaxue.

Britain's Most Eligible Bachelor Is No Longer Quite As Eligible

Prince Harry was once voted as Britain’s most eligible bachelor (beating other household names like George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio) but with his recent engagement, he’s now officially taken. He knocked himself off that list with his hush hush proposal earlier this month to Suits’ actress Meghan Markle. The Royal Family totally approves, and this something that we all need to applaud.

Yep, even The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall – that’s Prince Charles and Camilla for those who aren’t well versed in our royal titles – offered a heartfelt congratulations, saying:

My oh my, how times have changed. Just a mere generation ago, marrying an actress who was once-divorced, bi-racial, and a commoner would’ve been completely frowned upon. Markle will be the first American divorcee to marry into royalty in almost 81 years – the infamous Wallis Simpson as the one and only before this.
That doesn’t quite help with the constant press scrutiny the pair faced during the last 15 months of dating. In fact, the level of harassment and abuse faced by Markle was so bad that Prince Harry issued a statement to all – basically, telling them to back off.

ring
The ring was made by Court Jewellers and Medallists to Her Majesty The Queen, Cleave and Company.

Markle’s engagement ring is personally designed by Prince Harry: the centre of the ring is a diamond from Botswana that’s cradled by two diamonds from the late Princess Diana’s personal jewellery collection.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to marry in Spring 2018. Their married home will be Prince Harry’s current residence, Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace.
And for those of you who are wondering – Markle will not be titled as Princess Meghan since she doesn’t come from royal blood but will instead be titled Her Royal Highness, Princess Henry of Wales.

The Chic Minimalist Timepiece That Sees Savina Chai Through Any Day

In the history of horology, there has never been an array of timepieces as wide as there is today. With a myriad of options out there, selecting a versatile watch can pose quite the challenge for budding enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. This is why we’ve narrowed down our specifications to hunt down the ideal wrist auxiliary for the modern woman: It has to be elegant, minimalist, and lightweight – able to adapt itself to suit most occasions as well as elevate any outfit without hindering movement.
With that in mind, we turned our full attention to Daniel Wellington’s offerings and set our eyes on the Classic Petite Ashfield.

dw-petite-28-ashfield-rg-cat
Daniel Wellington Classic Petite Ashfield

Not just a brand that’s recognised for their signature multi-coloured NATO strap watches, Daniel Wellington is known for their sophisticated timepieces suitable for everyday wear, and the Classic Petite Ashfield is no doubt one of the most elegant the label has to offer. Featuring a matte black mesh strap merged with a sophisticated black dial, the streamlined form is accentuated by sleek slivers of rose gold to play up its poise. When you’ve got this on, you’ll notice that the ultra-thin metal strap twines itself delicately around the wrist and bears none of that hefty weight you’d expect from the gleaming stainless steel.

Daniel Wellington Classic Petite Ashfield (closeup)

A while ago, we got 4 members from the NYLON team to style their outfits around a Daniel Wellington watch of their choice, and needless to say, each timepiece managed to string our looks together no matter the mess. Of course, we’re no style mavens, which ultimately gave us the idea of reaching out to our friend Savina Chai to show us exactly how it’s done.
Now, if you follow Savina’s Instagram, you would know that she’s one busy bee. An entrepreneur, fashion stylist, and creative director, Savina is someone with an eye for fashion and keen aesthetic attention to detail, infusing minimalism with a slice of edginess when she crafts every ensemble. As the founder of Eight Slate, an independent women’s fashion label built on a contemporary aesthetic, she often styles herself around her mood and the weather, channelling tailored opulence one moment and street grunge the next.
Curious to see how she’d curate her looks with the Daniel Wellington Classic Petite Ashfield, we followed her around from day to evening and picked up a few style tips along the way.

10AM, National Gallery Singapore

DSC_0954
DSC_0957
Starting her day early, Savina arrives at the National Gallery to draw some inspiration from the architectural shapes of this visual arts institution. Here, she’s gone for relaxed yet structured separates, opting for an ivory cotton blouse with perforated detailing and feminine frills, balanced out by a pair of roomy wide-leg khaki trousers with a tie-front belt to cinch in the silhouette. Black goes with everything, but when styled with a matching black leather handbag and a pair of heels, the touch of rose gold from the Classic Petite Ashfield lends an elegant edge to the outfit.
DSC_0919
DSC_0940
A closer look at the watch, and you’ll notice how nicely it plays with her other accessories too, be it gold-toned or silver-plated. Savina has perched herself outdoor at Gallery & Co.’s cafe ready to get back to the grind, but not without a quick shot of caffeine to kickstart the system first, of course.

3.30PM, The Glasshouse at CHIJMES

DSC_0963
After squeezing in a couple of meetings after lunch, Savina makes a pitstop at The Glasshouse, a specialty coffee and toast bar tucked in a cozy corner of CHIJMES, for a quick mid-day refuel. A glass of chilled chamomile tea in one hand, she takes a moment to unwind, scrolling through her social media feeds to catch up on the world.
DSC_0964
DSC_0975
Keeping it casual with a relaxed romper in a dark denim wash, she tops off her second outfit with an on-trend plaid baker boy cap and a textured python leather handbag that adds the perfect pop of emerald to her ensemble. Styled with the same arm accessories, the Classic Petite Ashfield complements her picks, pulling each item together with its sleek steel form to set a polished yet laid-back vibe for the entire outfit once again.

6PM, CHIJMES

DSC_0994-1
To end off her day, Savina’s meeting up with her friends for dinner and drinks this evening. Instead of going glam for this look though, she’s sticking to a laid-back vibe with effortless touches of elegance. Here, she’s tossed on a vibrant red printed t-shirt and tucked it into a fun skirt with tassel frills to offset its basic shape, creating a flattering silhouette that still allows for movement (we predict she’ll bust out some dance moves later at night).
DSC_1011-1
Swapping out her heels for a pair of flats, she’s wisely picked out these comfortable mules in metallic gold leather, complete with gold hardware to keep the look classy. To up the luxe factor, she’s also donned a pair of statement-making gold drop earrings, which goes great with the Classic Petite Ashfield. Matched with shades and a mini tote with similar black and gold detailing, the watch balances out her youthful outfit and gives it a polished impression.
DSC_1007
Through work sessions, meetings, outfit changes, and events way past dinner, the Daniel Wellington Classic Petite Ashfield was there for it all, complementing entire ensembles while giving them a fresh, modern update. A timepiece that’s an ode to timeless minimalism, indeed – an easy one for Savina to style any outfit around.

Wild Rice's Holiday Pantomime This Year – Mama White Snake – Is Absolutely Pun-tastic

If anyone ever tells you that Singapore’s art scene “cannot make it” when it comes to theatre, you can just redirect them to any one of Wild Rice’s productions. Without fail, Wild Rice would put on a spectacular holiday show, and this year is it’s best ever yet. This year, Wild Rice managed to bring back some legends in the theatre scene, shine the spotlight on some rising young talent, and totally redefine a classic Chinese legend without coming off as over-used.
If you grew up as a Chinese kid in Singapore, you probably would be very familiar with the tale of Madam White Snake (also known as Legend of the White Snake), one of China’s Four Great Folktales that sits right up alongside the other tales of Meng Jiang Nu,  Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, and The Cowherd and the Weaving Maid (Niulang Zhinü).
Madam White Snake has always been a tale of good and evil, although the evil person seems to alternate between the Snake spirit and her antagonist, the monk Fahai, depending on the version you’re reading. Mama White Snake is Wild Rice’s version of the legend, and a pantomime at that. You can expect loads of good ol’ Singapore humour, a hefty dose of Chinese opera and pop culture references in between. A pantomime is always huge fun, because audience participation is encouraged (yes, it’s normal to break the fourth wall) and it’s pretty much a laughfest for a good two hours. Oh and Mama White Snake in particular? Has loads of puns if that’s something you love. Because we want you to experience the pun-tastic musical firsthand, we’ll try not to reveal too many spoilers!

Screen Shot 2017-11-27 at 18.33.44

Glen Goei as Mama White Snake

Two of Singapore’s acting legends take the stage as Mama White Snake and her sidekick, Aunt Green. Glen Goei returns to the stage after 30 years as Mama White Snake, who operates a pharmacy atop of Emei Mountain, together with her sister and her son. Mama White Snake’s son, Meng, is pretty much like every other teenage kid who yearns for freedom. Meng decides to run away from home to learn about life beyond Emei Mountain, but unexpectedly finds himself tricked into allowing Mama White Snake to be captured by a monk, Master Fahai. Considering that Glen Goei is 55 years old, we were surprised to see Mama White Snake easily prancing across the stage, light as a feather and even performing martial arts sequences!
Screen Shot 2017-11-27 at 17.20.48

Ivan Heng as cool Aunt Green, who is a secret kung-fu expert

Over now to Ivan Heng, who plays Aunt Green. When Aunt Green wholeheartedly supported Meng on chasing his dreams even though it means running away and upsetting her sister, she won our stamp of approval. Surprisingly, the chemistry between Glen and Ivan is rock solid, as they banter over who is the prettier one out of them two (it’s always the other). The grace that they carry themselves with as the two (beautiful) ladies is something that would take us years of practicing. Oh, and Aunt Green is the epitome of the cool aunt – she’s supportive, drops praises like leaves, and knows kung-fu.
Screen Shot 2017-11-27 at 17.19.52

Master Fahai and Lady Ngiao, who run a martial arts school together

The true star of the show has to go to Master/ Monk Fahai. Played by Siti Khalijah Zainal, Master Fahai was equal parts sassy and egoistic, but 100% hilarious. If you weren’t aware, you would have probably thought that a Chinese person was behind that long, white beard, because she is just that good. Siti can now add Chinese monk onto the growing list of characters she can take on, which includes a rapper and a  malay makcik. Master Fahai’s lines were all spot-on, full of puns, and delivered with just the right amount of punch that makes you love him even though he appears as one of the antagonists.
Screen Shot 2017-11-27 at 17.20.36

Andrew Marko as Meng going against Mimi’s parents, Lady Ngiao and Master Fahai

Andrew Marko and Cheryl Tan make up the younger main cast, starring as Meng and Mimi respectively.   These two rising stars have amazing vocal chops, but it’s their duets where they really shine. Andrew’s husky voice and Cheryl’s soprano vibrato bring out the best in each other’s voices. Love reigns strong in this production with tons filial piety and romance as Mimi finds herself falling in love with Meng despite the conflicts between their parents.
Screen Shot 2017-11-27 at 17.19.38

Who can forget the adorable children cast? Pantomimes are stages to be enjoyed by everyone in the family, including kids – and there is nothing more heartwarming than watching kids! With a cast of 22 kids who managed to balance school and rehearsals just to put on a performance for us, there is no ending to their cuteness. Sure, the kids are not always in sync and make rather obvious mistakes, but you’ll forgive them in an instant (we know we did). Having a children cast certainly did liven up the mood, which gave the stage a Disney-esque vibe whenever the kids appeared during a song. We’re talking about those classic Disney movies, where the scene changes as the characters run around in fantastical wonderlands.

Whether you are familiar with the legend of Madam White Snake or not, you can’t deny that the entire storyline is quite predictable. The jokes and puns on the other hand are not your usual cringe-y lines that seem to plague most local plays – they are well thought out, and delivered in such a way where you’ll find yourself laughing along. That being said, Mama White Snake is full of family fun and laugh-out-loud moments, and is also a good way to introduce your younger siblings or kids to Chinese folk tales.

NYLON's Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide: Everyone's Favourite Millennial

Come on, you’ve heard the medley of sing-along carols they play in the malls right? It’s unmistakeable; our favourite festive holiday is around the corner, and in the cheerful spirit of giving, we’re here to offer our epic round-ups of the best gifts you can buy for your friend / family member / significant other. Only this time, it’s for the guy whose Instagram feed is curated to Hypebeast-style perfection, the couch potato who takes Netflix and chill to a new dormant level, or the basic b who thinks she’s a queen. Basically, like you, we love stereotyping people in our heads (for fun!), so we’re going along with that to suss out the perfect present.
This one’s, then, for the buzzword of the year: millennials.
We (oh yes, we) have been celebrated and gloriously marketed to, and then got our reputation dragged through the mud as famously as our dear Taylor Swift. Do we really need the attention? Apparently. So here’s a list that caters to our narcissistic selves: we’ve got something for the ‘gram, something with a bit of irony and humour, and a lot of pure pink class. All prizes, no participation awards. Time to bring cheer to that special snowflake of yours — you see, he or she probably feels entitled to that gift already.

The World’s Rarest Ray Joins S.E.A Aquarium This Holiday Season

To be honest, S.E.A Aquarium isn’t the first place that jumps to our mind when we think of Christmas – we lean towards traditional Christmas scenes that have a hot cup of tea and gingerbread cookies, wrapped presents under a well-decorated tree, and a hearty dinner with all the trimmings. But hey, you’re missing out if you don’t have any plans to venture down to the S.E.A Aquarium this Christmas – especially since there’s discount admission rates for all this holiday season.
From 1 to 31 Dec, the aquarium celebrates their annual “Merry Fishmas” celebrations, meaning that there’ll be lots of interactive activities for you to take part in. You can witness a Giant Pacific Octopus cleverly maneuver his tentacles to grasp hidden treats in a box, or admire a 3.2-metre tall “Fishmas” tree that’s made up of over 300 plastic bottles.

1 (3)
S.E.A Aquarium’s male ornate eagle ray has a 1.2m wingspan and weighs 15kg, coming all the way from Cairns Marine.

They’re also bringing in a bunch of new sea life creatures, which includes the ornate eagle ray – one of the world’s rarest rays. The ornate eagle ray is listed as “Endangered”, mostly because they’re always accidentally captured by fisherman in the Pacific Ocean waters – despite measuring up to 5m.
1 (1)
Scuba Santa and Elves will be diving among sharks, manta rays, and schooling fish – while dealing out treats for the animals.

Supposedly shy, we’re not sure how the ornate eagle ray will react when S.E.A Aquarium scuba divers get their annual revamp as Scuba Santa and Elves – but we’re liking how Scuba Santa is authentically Santa and is clad in a full red suit complete with beard and all.
honeycomb
The honeycomb cowfish is named for its unique honeycomb-like pattern and “horns”. Weird fact: they have no pelvic fins!

The aquarium will also be welcoming many other threatened sea species, such as the Argentine humphead, Mauritius triggerfish, honeycomb cowfish, and bat ray.
The aquarium’s mascots, Mai the manta Ray and Sam the hammerhead shark, will also be making their way around to greet and meet.

Singapore residents can enjoy discounts on admission at $30 for an adult one-day ticket (U.P. $34), and $18 for a child/ senior citizen ticket (U.P. $24). You can watch Scuba Santa and Elves Underwater Adventures at 3pm daily, with an additional show at 1.45pm on 2, 3, 9, 10 & 16 Dec to 1 Jan.
For more information, visit S.E.A Aquarium’s official website.
