This Local Singaporean Skincare Label Gets How Stressed We All Are

By Pailin Boonlong
I’m the type of person who gets bored using the same skincare product again and again. Skincare staples aside (I’ve stuck by the same sunscreen for years; Shiseido Anessa Perfect, $34), I like changing up my skincare routine with new products – I have this unproven theory that my skin will develop a resistance if it keeps absorbing the same ingredients.
When I first came across RE:ERTH, I was struck by how a local skincare label just gets it. They know we want something low-maintenance to reduce our stressful days, not add to them. They say they embrace “mindfulness”, and I can’t really tell if applying moisturiser helps me practice mindfulness but I do appreciate how there’s simplicity to their products. No surprises there, since RE:ERTH is short form for “Re-encountering Earth”. They’ve carefully considered the absolute necessity of each product, and ended up with a curated line of six products – which are basic essentials in their own right.

8754d851-e51a-4420-9d63-6b6031d17f8c
The range: Multi-Targeted Elixir, Calming Toner, Clarifying Cleanser, Hydrating Gel Moisturiser, Soothing Eye Cream.

I was intrigued enough to try RE:ERTH’s Starter Kit ($406) for a week. Yep, that means no other serum, no other toner, no other moisturisers – I strictly stuck to these six products for my skincare regime. This was initially a struggle for me: I pretty much vary all the products I have on a daily basis, and it went from using something like 6 different skincare labels in one day to just…one.
1a402ea5-46f0-4f92-be67-934423da44cf
The Multi-Targeted Elixir comes in a pretty rose-gold shade.

The Multi-Targeted Elixir ($134) is the obvious star of the show. Like all of RE:ERTH’s products, it has Japanese White Tumeric Root all the way from Mount Aso in Kyushu – this is said to give you firm and supple skin. Although RE:ERTH is a local skincare label, all their products are “Made in Japan”. I don’t know if what I smelled is Japanese White Tumeric Root, but it was pleasantly sweet. It came in a fully rose-gold bottle and had this swivel cap that was quite nifty. You didn’t have to uncap it, just turn it slightly and the pump would reveal itself.
9fdb9c12-5bcd-426d-8359-b37e918e3d67
Took quite a bit of effort to pump this out!

But after a few uses, it became increasingly difficult to squirt out the Elixir. No matter the angle of the bottle (I tried horizontal, pointing downwards, slightly angled – everything!), it was a struggle to get the Elixir out. It turns out that pretty packaging isn’t always practical.
Good thing it redeems itself when actually applied. The Elixir is a deep shade of translucent orange/ yellow, and it easily absorbs into your skin. You’re meant to use this straight after cleansing your face with the Clarifying Cleanser ($87), which “sweeps away light makeup, sebum, and debris on the skin without stripping it of essential moisture”.
Yes, you read this right: you’re meant to apply the Elixir before the Calming Toner ($87). If this sounds strange to you, it’s because we’re all used to dabbing Toner onto our faces with cotton buds right after cleansing. It’s meant to be the second essential step of any skincare routine, so it’s a bit strange that it comes after applying the Elixir. The reason for this is because the Elixir is quickly absorbed into the skin within ten seconds, to help refine your pores and even out your skin tone. The founders want this to be the first thing on your face after cleansing, so there’s nothing else between your skin and the Elixir. The Toner is then applied to help rebalance and soften the skin.
e38ae3b3-44d2-421a-990e-1565118ddedc
All are suitable for daily use, but the Elixir is the star product.

The Hydrating Gel Moisturiser ($106) and Smoothing Eye Cream ($124) both do their jobs – they moisturise. One pump from each should be enough to moisturise a person with combination to oily skin, I lean towards dry skin and needed two pumps of the Hydrating Gel Moisturiser. Both are quite mild and lightweight which makes them suitable for use in Singapore’s humid climate, and give a soft, velvety feel to the skin. However, the Eye Cream takes a while to absorb fully and you need a lot of patting for it to sink in.
One common thing across all products – I really liked how they all smelled.
0533c43b-86af-4aed-8efe-9ea891540e50
RE:ERTH encourages mindful beauty and reconnecting to nature.

If you had to try just one product from RE:ERTH’s range, it would be the Multi-Targeted Elixir. While the other products are suitable for everyday use and are comparable to other premium “Made in Japan” brands, the price does seem slightly steep for such bare essentials. This could be possibly be due to the quality of ingredients – after all, their products do all have Japanese White Tumeric to stimulate collagen production, Japanese Spring Tumeric Leaf Extract to reduce melanin production, and Yellow Tumeric which offers many antioxidant properties.
Their Starter Kit ($406) is a good choice for someone who wants a fuss-free skincare routine that’s filled with nature-derived quality ingredients.

KFC Creates an “Internet Escape Pod” for Fried Chicken Lovers

Gone are the days where KFC only served fried chicken. The fast food giant has come up with some very peculiar creations recently, the weirdest being a drumstick bath bomb that’ll leave you smelling like you had a nice, long dip in a tub of poultry grease, as well as KFC-scented sunscreen, and a KFC-scented candle.
This time, however, fragrance – if you’d like to call it that, is left out of the equation. Now, fried chicken lovers can now look forward to what KFC calls an “internet escape pod”, that comes with a creepy-looking Colonel Sanders propped right on its top, with his freakishly long limbs extended across a dome-like surface.

internet_escape_pod1

The pod, which is meant to help you escape technology, since well, you know; everyone is always glued to their phones, is made out of steel and stainless-steel mesh, and can fit “four adults, and a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken”, according to the good folks at KFC.
In other words, it’s a massive Internet-blocker, like the Great Firewall of China.
kfc-internet-escape-pod-3_3

“We’ve come up with several technologically advanced, creative experiences for our customers and fans this year. But even we feel the burden of technology during the holiday season. So we decided to go in the opposite direction and create an anti-technology product, using technology, to help one lucky buyer literally escape the holiday chaos,” said George Felix, director of advertising, KFC U.S.
internet_escape_pod

If the omnipresence of the Internet annoys you, and you’d just like to have a good ol’ conversation with friends in one of these pods without whipping out your phone, do be warned; it’s not going to come cheap (or easy to get). One pod costs US$10,000, and they only ship within the U.S – a ridiculously high price to pay for escaping the Internet.
Still, it’s pretty entertaining to see KFC’s trolling side, and we can’t wait to check out the next bizarre item that’s up the company’s sleeve.
In other KFC news, the brand has just launched a new Red Hot Szechuan Chicken flavour.

The Fantastic Beasts Sequel Now Has A Name

We can safely assume that the Harry Potter Wizarding World’s never going to completely phase out. With Harry Potter-related merchandise, spin-off blockbusters, and even a Niantic-made virtual reality game – we’re definitely over our heads with Harry Potter-everything, and that’s exactly the way we like it. For Merlin’s Dumbledore’s sake, we even had a live Harry Potter concert in Singapore.

FNBST2_First_Look_3000x1800-R01_master-rev-1
We see the return of familiar faces: Eddie Redmayne as Newt, Katherine Waterston as Tina, Alison Sudol as Queenie, Dan Fogler as Jacob, Ezra Miller as Credence, Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, and Johnny Depp Grindelwald.
New faces: Jude Law as Dumbledore, and Claudia Kim as a new character.

Well, now there’s another star-studded Hollywood blockbuster for us to look forward to. The second of the five-part Fantastic Beasts series has just announced its name: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Having started production earlier this year, the second of the series continues off from Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, and is described to start in London before moving to Paris. Newt Scamander’s certainly going all around the world, and this time, not just for cutesey CGI-developed fantastic beasts – it’s now to help save the Wizarding World (a line as main protagonist Harry Potter is familiar with as The Chosen One).
So, what will Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald actually be about?

Grindelwald is the current owner of the Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will most definitely have Johnny Depp as the star of the show, while Dumbledore and Newt will be joining alliances to take down the dark forces. A synopsis from Warner Bros stated:
“…Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause – elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore.”
“But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander.”

Jude Law as Dumbledore

fantastic-beasts-2-dumbledore-jude-law--1059106 2
He’s a very suave version of the Dumbledore we’re used to.

Speaking of Dumbledore, this is the first time we’ll see Jude Law play a young Albus Dumbledore. Clad in an ankle-length velvet blue coat, he looks drastically different to his wizened Dumbledore predecessors, Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.

Has Credence joined the circus?

gallery-1510845978-c
Posters that were seen in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

Oh yes, Credence is alive and back…and he might have joined a circus too. The Cirucs Arcanus was seen on a poster during the first movie, as a travelling circus going from New York to Europe. It’s not too far-fetched that he left to join a circus where he met Fantastic Beast’s newcomer Claudia Kim.

Who is Claudia Kim’s character?

It’s been revealed that The Avengers’ Claudia Kim will be a “Maledictus”, which the synopsis describes as “the carrier of a blood curse that destines her ultimately to transform into a beast”. If you take a closer look at her outfit, she’s wearing electric blue scaly tights that are both sleek and shiny. Could she be any more snake-like?
tumblr_o6k89de2j21qcqbbso2_500

The online rumor out there suggests Claudia Kim as “The Enchanting Snake Girl” shown in the Circus Arcanus’ posters. What’s the relevance of this to the original PotterVerse? Well, we all know snakes are intimately linked to Voldemort (he is a Parseltongue, after all) and we also know that he has a pet horcrux that goes by the name of Nagini.
We’re not saying she could be Nagini, but with the constant symbolism of snakes in Rowling’s world, it kind of could make sense, don’t you think?

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is set to hit theatres 16 Nov 2018. Find out more at their official website.

The Incredibles 2 Teaser Is Out, and Jack-Jack Is On Fire!

When you love something so much, there’s no statute of limitation on when’s a good time to rekindle that flame. Just this year we were gifted the sequel to Finding Nemo, and while sequels in the past have had the power to turn us off from our deepest devotions, cult classics handled properly still manage to find a place in our soft spots.
Millennials will definitely remember The Incredibles, the 2004 Pixar-animated movie featuring a family of superheroes who fight crime and defeat formidable villains. There was so much to like about the movie, especially that its ending was frothing with possibility for a part two. More than a decade later, most’ve us had given up hope for that expectation to come to fruition, but Pixar’s latest tease has our fandom radar beeping with excitement once again!

The teaser highlights The Incredibles‘ biggest easter egg, Jack Jack’s untapped superpowers. In the first instalment it was hinted that Jack Jack had an assortment of powers which festered when he was put in various dangerous situations. While it’s clear he fits right into the DNA of his family, the teaser for The Incredibles 2 suggests that he could potentially help the family battle evil even before he’s uttered his first words! Now that Bob Parr, the dad with superhuman strength, is left to manage the house, will he let his infatuation with discovering his son’s abilities mean he encourages an outpour of laser beams and spontaneous combustions?
Speaking of destruction, we’re wondering if The Incredibles 2 plans on sticking to their original pick of The Underminer. The mole-looking, tunnel boring machine wielding creature immediately wreaked chaos shortly after Syndrome was killed by the turbine of his own jet (that’s why we always recommend Edna Mode’s costumes!), and was the antagonist for a spin-off video game of the same universe. Timeline wise, the sequel seems to take off right after its predecessor left off, but we’re leaving everything up to its creators to impress us a second time round!
The Incredibles 2 is set to be released 14 June 2018.

All The Spring/ Summer 2018 Fashion Trends We Are Looking Forward To

We’ve had a good run with the trends of this year — statement tees, velvet blue, metallic shimmer… The list goes on. With 2017 coming to a close, it’s time to look at the trends coming up in the next season.

Pastel Power

From left: Chanel, Carven, Atlein

Pastel is a popular go-to for many designers in spring/summer collections, so it’s no surprise that the spring/summer 2018 runways saw an explosion of powdery shades ranging from blush to lavender and ice-blue. Next season, you’ll get to indulge in your pastel passion!

Tailored Denim

Dior Spring/Summer 2018

2018 denim is far from being the sloppy casual-wear staple. While you don’t have to throw out your ripped boyfriend jeans yet, consider adding some tailored denim dresses or jackets to your closet. In case you’re wondering what tailored denim is, the answer lies in the cut — which means you want sleek silhouettes and close stitching.

Mix ’n’ Match Brights

There’s nothing like some bright colours to spruce up your wardrobe, and next season is reason for you to go all out with your happy colours. Be it eighties-inspired like Elie Saab or with a slight Gothic twist like Kenzo, it’s a look that is guaranteed to turn heads!

Simply Sheer

Screen Shot 2017-11-17 at 11.41.37

The peekaboo trend is not going anywhere, and for good reason: it’s perfect for some low-key sexiness. With Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, and Givenchy tempting us to bare some, we’d say that evening wear dress codes are going to have to loosen up.

Trench coats — too impractical for Singapore weather? No sweat. Take a cue from Atlein and Max Mara and go with sleeker, shrunken silhouettes that make your trench coat look more like a jacket. Or, even better, wear it as a dress. Casual outer wear that still looks chic? We’re sold.

You Can Almost See Your Own Reflection With These Mirror Lips

Instagram beauty trends are so fleeting: we’ve seen everything from nose hair extensions, marbled lips, and even tightlining your eyes with a metal chain. Now, we don’t really recommend doing any of them, but hey, it’s all for the gram right?
2017’s been the year for lip art, with plenty of crazy lip designs popping up – some of them disturbing (painting your lips so they look like an eye, complete with fluttery lashes and all), and some of them rivalling intricate art installations. Here’s a beauty trend for you that you can definitely try out at home: lips that other people won’t stop gawking at since they can see their reflections in them!

These lips are so reflective that they can’t be real. And you’re right – they’re not. Instagrammer Jazmina Daniel cut a piece of reflective paper to the shape of her lips, and glued it on with lash glue. You probably won’t go out in public looking like this, but it’ll look great on Instagram.

Who said Mirror Lips had to be silver? These lips belong to makeup artist Genevieve Jauquet, and she’s painted them a lush orchid shade with Anastasia Beverly Hill’s Liquid Lipsticks in Potion, Vintage, and Rio ($20 each, available on Sephora). These are ultra-glossy, and ultra-reflective.

To get Mirror Lips, you could just as easily go with a mosaic mirror look. Or stick on glittery pieces to make sure your lips are reflecting! Whatever it is, the more reflective your lips, the more on track you are with this Instagram beauty trend.

Here's How The "A Tiffany Holiday" Christmas Tree Light-Up Party Went Down

Just hanging out around town for food and light shopping these few weeks has already sufficiently gotten us into the festive end-of-year holiday spirit. Yesterday, we were super excited to attend Tiffany and Co.’s “A Tiffany Holiday” party, where we caught the Tiffany and Co. Christmas tree light-up ceremony and enjoyed The Sam Willows perform a setlist of Christmas songs. Not only did they give us every reason to get right into the festive spirit, their rendition of their hit single “Take Heart” gave us extra feels for their upcoming album launching early next year!
Here are some highlights of the party — don’t worry, even if you weren’t there, we’ve got you covered!

Besides The Sam Willows, we were also graced by the presence of Rozz (@HeyRozz), the emcee for the party. Best known for her wicked coverage of news and pop culture and as one of our favourite radio DJs, we weren’t surprised when she killed with her vibrant personality and irreverent sense of humour.

For us, however, the party didn’t end there. We then headed into the Tiffany and Co. flagship store just metres away to participate in a variety of Christmas-themed activities we can’t wait to share with you.
Just walking into the store also made us also super excited to be receiving and thinking up super sentimental gifts from and for our loved ones this year. Tiffany and Co. has been launching an exquisite line-up of new jewellery, fragrances and homeware, with just about every piece sounding off our shopping radar. For those of us who were planning to get our loved ones some Tiffany jewelry this holiday, we visited the Calligraphy and Postcard station where we witnessed a team of professionals working on customised letters as a pleasant accompaniment.

For the rest of us, we rushed over to get our cuppa hot cocoa from the West Coast Cocoa Merchants Hot Chocolate Bar, filling our tummies with the warmth of Tiffany and Co.’s love. The hot chocolate bar featured a triad of concoctions — Deluxe, Dark Deluxe and Peppermint — that were made with premium, ethically-sourced cocoa beans which were both tasty and approvable by Santa’s Nice List. They even had fancy names like “Meet Me Under the Mistletoe” and “Baby it’s Cold Outside,” which made us yearn even more to spend some time at Tiffany and Co. store with our loved ones.

If you’re walking around Ngee Ann City anytime during the Christmas period this year, don’t be startled by a silver chrome human mannequin pushing a figure of wonderful life-sized Tiffany and Co. Blue Boxes. It’s neither the ghost of Christmas past, present or future — it’s just Tiffany and Co.’s way of reminding you what great gifts Tiffany and Co. jewellery make, especially apt for the festivity often dubbed the Season of Giving!

This year also amped our moods to take pictures by the Tiffany and Co. Christmas tree due to the special Tiffany-themed “Gift Box” Photobooth, which gave us extra material to work around when we were posing with our colleagues. Just a head’s up: you have to 1 January 2018 to take as many photos by the Tiffany and Co. Christmas tree!

Pikachu Can Now SPEAK English and It’s Disturbing AF

Ah, Pikachu – everyone’s favourite electric mouse that even your grandma knows about. For years, this little critter has enthralled the world, becoming the Pokémon icon in the process. But just when you thought that “pika-pi” would be immortalized in cartoon history, Pikachu starts speaking English.
Yep, we checked the sky; pigs aren’t flying. The English language really came out of Pikachu’s mouth, and not in one or two words, mind you, but in properly formed sentences. That disturbing scene was shown in a screening of Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You, where Ash Ketchum shields Pikachu from what appears to be impending doom.

When Ash asks Pikachu why it never wants to go inside a Pokéball, Pikachu responds in a sickly, sweet voice, saying that it “always wants to be with him”. The crowd, at first confused, goes berserk, with one member shouting “what the f*ck”, and another heard going “No!”
We guess the weirdness was just too much for them.
In any case, there’s only one Pokémon that should be allowed to speak English, and that’s Meowth. Even if we give this scene the benefit of the doubt and say that Ash is hallucinating, and in his blurred vision, imagines Pikachu speaking, it’s still way too strange to digest. We prefer the whole “I-can-only-say-my-own-name” business.

Whatever the case may be; Pikachu’s English voice actor, Kate Bristol, had no regrets about the controversial scene whatsoever, telling the Guardian Australia that while the line was “out of the ordinary, it was still something she enjoyed.
“Personally, I did my best to mimic [Japanese voice actor] Ikue Otani as she is the master. This part in Japanese is adorable. At the end of the day Pokémon is a good time and I sure as hell enjoyed being a Pikachu for 0.5 seconds,” Bristol said.
Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You will debut in theatres on Nov 23.

Review: The Google Pixel 2 XL is Seriously Android’s Best Phone – Here’s Why

By Joel Conceicao
What’s the top Android phone out there? Perhaps it’s Samsung’s Galaxy S8. Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro would also be a worthy contender. However, the real heavyweight that’ll squash the competition, no matter the operating system, is Google’s Pixel 2 XL.

google_pixel1

Having used both iOS and Android before, I found the Pixel 2 XL to be the best all-rounded phone I’ve ever used; with standout features that’ll make you want to splash the cash. Here’s why:
1) It has the best camera in the market, hands down:
Smartphones are now people’s de facto photo-taking device of choice, so you’ve got to have a good camera. Huawei’s Leica branded-lenses are great, and you can never rule out the iPhone. But here’s where the Google Pixel 2 XL excels – its software is impeccable.
google_pixel3

Whether it’s low light, natural light, landscape, or portrait shots, your photos will look stunning. The colours are crisp and there is plenty of depth. The Pixel 2 XL’s 12-megapixel camera, with a wide f/1.8 aperture, manages to capture even the minutest of details clearly, and can fool you into thinking it was taken by a DSLR at times.
Here are some sample shots:
MVIMG_20171113_154639 (1)

Food photos look incredible. Just check out the level of detail on the custard puff, like the powdered sugar on top.

MVIMG_20171113_153910 (1)

It’s great for macro shots too, and you can clearly see the battered skin of this fried chicken.

Landscape shots have lots of depth, and the setting’s natural colour is retained.

MVIMG_20171105_175015

There’s also a face retouching feature, which comes in handy for selfies (p.s I’m super awkward at selfies)

Low-light shots have accurate colours, and are even vibrant in some cases.

All this is made possible thanks to the Pixel 2 XL’s Auto-HDR+ function. It takes multiple shots every time you click the shutter, and combines them for the best effect. And it doesn’t matter that it’s not a dual-lens like the iPhone X or Huawei Mate 10 Pro, cause it’s even better.
2) You’re going to get the ultimate Google experience
As the Pixel 2 XL is Google’s flagship phone, you’re going to enjoy some very powerful software. You’ll get Android 8.0 right off the bat. And since Google develops Android, you’ll get first dibs on OS and security updates.
Another plus point is that there won’t be any annoying third party apps to clog up your phone, since Google’s native apps will be already present.
DSC_1039

As for the Pixel 2 XL’s performance, I found it extremely quick. Apps launched swiftly (and smoothly), and I felt like I was using the Usain Bolt of smartphones. Of course, phones do slow down after an extended period of use, especially once you load them with apps.
But judging from last year’s Pixel, which retained most of its original speed, I expect the Pixel 2 XL to perform more or less the same after a year.
3) It looks (and feels) like a phone worth spending money on
Smartphones are extremely expensive, so it’s important that you make your money count. And for that, design is real important. Would you want to blow a thousand bucks on a crappy looking device? I’m sure not.
Thankfully, the Google 2 Pixel is one good looker.
google_pixel2

Made out of a gorgeous mix of matte metal and glass, with a curved 6.2-inch edge-to-edge infinity display, the Pixel 2 XL looks every bit the premium phone that you’d expect it to be.
The metal back feels smooth, and I barely made any smudges on its front. I felt it was pretty comfortable to hold as well, which was a pleasant surprise considering that it’s technically a “phablet” – phone and tablet.
google_pixel4

It also doesn’t hurt that the phone is IP67 water resistant, meaning you can dunk it in one-metre of water for up to 30 minutes.
That said; the Google 2 Pixel isn’t without its chinks. Here are some things I didn’t quite like about it:
4) Some features were a little gimmicky
Back when the Pixel 2 XL was launched a few weeks ago, we were told that the Google Assistant could understand Singlish. And I was super excited to try that out, especially since the Pixel Buds (which can apparently translate up to 40 languages on the go), isn’t yet available in Singapore.
And c’mon, Singlish for the Google Assistant sounds pretty damn cool. Still, I’m going to question its applicability; I’d much rather type out searches instead of talking to my phone like a complete idiot. The Google Assistant, however, did pick up most of what I was saying, so that was impressive.
DSC_1033

Nonetheless, if you’re not going to use the Google Assistant a lot, like me, you’ll find that the squeezing feature to launch it comes across as gimmicky, and even unnecessary.
There were also complaints about the Pixel 2 XL’s display quality. I personally found it a little dull at times, though it wasn’t that much of a big deal. The colours still looked pretty good to me.
DSC_1040

What I did have a problem with was the phone’s biometric scanner being overly sensitive. There were a few instances when I just took it out of my pocket, and the phone notified me that too many attempts were made to unlock it. What? So I had to constantly manually unlock the phone with my passcode after getting locked out.
Conclusion
The Google Pixel 2 XL isn’t the perfect phone by any means, but it comes pretty damn close. It has everything you’d want in a good smartphone – the camera’s fantastic, the software smooth, and the design beautiful. There are some teething problems, but I have faith that Google will sort them out.
Overall, this is still Google’s best smartphone of all time, and it’s splendidly made too. If you’re an Android user, this is definitely worth upgrading for. And if you’re on the iOS side, there’s no better Android phone to shift to than the Pixel 2 XL.

Get Your Street Style Fix At This Exclusive i.t Black Friday Party

Now street style’s a tricky thing — you can say it’s a combination of t-shirts and sweaters and jackets and slouchy pants, plus that pair of hype-worthy shoes of course, but it’s really about the attitude. Given the right amount of it, you can rock up in a tattered t-shirt and jeans, and what would look totally normal on an average person can suddenly seem effortlessly cool. If that’s your thing, then we’ve bet you’ve heard of multi-label boutique i.t Labels — with cult brands such as AAPE, izzue, :CHOCOOLATE and 5cm, they’ve established themselves as the go-to destination for cool clothes that you wouldn’t necessarily find at the more run-of-the-mill high street retailers.

5cm Winter Looks

These more niche offerings — with plenty of logo tees, oversized designs, and bomber jackets — are still very much on trend though, and can still make you look pulled together rather than totally rugged. The Fall/Winter season definitely sees more outerwear, but this isn’t a bad thing! After all, street style features a lot of unconventional layers, so putting on a puffy bomber jacket, with embroidered details for a change, over a skirt totally works, as does a sweater tucked loosely over jeans.
The guys also shouldn’t feel left out at all; i.t carries plenty of brands that have a good range of menswear, and by that we don’t mean multiple designs of the same basic cuts. AAPE, for instance, is incredibly popular for their daring prints, while izzue and 5cm offer more clean, comfy cuts with enough irreverent design you’d want to flaunt. All this at prices more affordable than, say, your Supreme or Off-White.

As guests, you’ll stand to win 5 of the items featured in the talk as well, thanks to the event’s very own i.t Winter Must-Haves Lucky Draw!
There’ll be food and drinks of course, in the form of a live french fries station, galaxy-themed drinks and free flow beer by Carlsberg. Other stations include a customisation area — Pew Pew Patches will be there so you can have their adorable iron-on patches on your new i.t wear!

Trying On Different Looks With YOOX

Online shopping can be like an addiction – we’re all guilty of that late-night online shopping splurge – but it’s quickly becoming stale. You heard that right: we’re bored of online shopping but only when the items that are being sold start looking all the same. Websites we used to love are starting to push out the same type of clothes, in the same colour, in the same styles. When you start seeing the same repetitive pieces on every mannequin and stranger alike, you can’t help but cringe and walk away as quickly as you can.
As personal branding gets more important, personal styling becomes more desirable. Instead of limiting ourselves to what’s trendy, we want staples that are easily versatile to reflect our true selves. We want the option to mix-and-match pieces to create an identity for ourselves. We want to find things where we can say “what a find!” and get a satisfied glow knowing that we’ve found something that is truly unique.
We want something like YOOX.

When we spend more time at YOOX, we find out that it’s a treasure trove of items that we can’t find anywhere else. You’ll discover new designers and labels, and also revisit beloved brands. They have Alexander McQueen skull scarves up for grabs, but they also have more underground designers like Yohji Yamamoto.

NYLON Team Picks: The One Beauty Essential We Bring On Every Flight

While we love travelling to countries far and wide, getting to our chosen destination by plane can be quite taxing indeed. Flying doesn’t just wear us out both mentally and physically, though – the recycled air that goes through every cabin can seriously dry your skin out and wreak havoc on your complexion. This is why you’ll see tons of airplane beauty routines all over YouTube, because in-flight skincare can truly make a difference to your epidermal health and ensure you step out of the plane looking fresh and well-rested.
This week, we challenged ourselves to pick out the one beauty item that we must have when we board the plane – and boy, it wasn’t easy.

Lush Ultrabalm$38, available at Lush stores and online

“Immersed in the Lush universe during a press trip in London two months ago, I picked up the Ultrabalm and have gotten a ton of use out of it since. Housed in a convenient tin, I whip it out and swipe a tiny amount on rashes, chapped lips, dry hands, hair, brows, my tattoo, and even my nostrils when it gets ridiculously arid on the plane (I don’t double-dip, okay). There are only three ingredients in the formula: jojoba oil, candelilla wax, and rose wax, which all work to soothe and moisturise parched patches of skin. It may be a balm, but due to jojoba oil’s affinity with our sebum, it’s absorbed much quicker and doesn’t leave a greasy slick on the skin. Apart from a faint rose scent from the wax, there’s no added fragrance, which is a surprising discovery since Lush is known for their distinct scents detectable from miles away, so the fragrance-free formula makes it perfect for my sensitive skin.” – Jade Yeo, Writer

suisai Beauty Clear Powder, $27, available at Welcia BHG

“I have this incessant need to cleanse my face before I sleep, especially if it’s a long haul flight. Previously I used to hog all the mini facial cleanser bottles and sample packets that I received whenever I bought skincare products so that I can use them on the plane. I’ve just discovered this wonderful cleanser by suisai that comes in powder form and is packaged into little capsules for one-time use. All you have to do is open the packet, add some water to lather it up and clean your face! The enzymes in the powder also helps to exfoliate, leaving your face squeaky clean. The small capsules are the perfect size to bring on the plane or when you go on short trips. I’ve just stocked up on them since I’ll be traveling a fair bit these couple of months!” – Michelle Ng, Writer

Estée Lauder Re-Nutriv Replenishing Comfort Crème Light (50ml), available at all Estée Lauder counters

“I have super dry skin – so dry that I still slather on ultra-rich moisturisers every night in Singapore’s high humidity levels of 85 per cent. It’s so bad that I’m not sure if I have eczema on my face, or I’m just naturally prone to flaky and red skin. When I get onto an airplane, where the humidity levels are at around 20 per cent, it gets worse; I have to physically resist the urge to claw at my forehead. Not wanting to sound like the Estée Lauder spokesperson for this, but Estée Lauder’s Comfort Crème is really like a miracle cream. I can’t help but gush about it because it truly works. The amazing thing is that you don’t even have to use that much product, just a tiny blob around the size of your pinky nail soothes the itch and lessens the redness. Definitely my go-to product when I travel, since I need it to survive the dry cabin air.” – Pailin Boonlong, Writer

The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask, $32.90, available at The Body Shop stores

“I’m not a frequent flyer, but I’m never one to miss the opportunity to protect and nurture my skin. As someone who used to suffer from terrible acne in my T-Zone, I always prioritise that area of my face to ensure it doesn’t break out. If I had to curate a travel-friendly skincare kit, I would definitely bring a pore-cleansing face mask, a spot-treatment and sunscreen lotion. My favourite mask to use is Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask. Whenever I put it on, I feel extra taken care of when I can feel it actually tugging my skin taut and releasing a fresh, rejuvenating scent. While it’s kind of a pain to remove, I find my skin visibly brighter after use. ” – Marcus Lee, Editorial Intern

Avene Eau Thermale Thermal Spring Water 50ml, $10, available at Watson’s stores

“With our weather being what it is, this facial mist is a welcome companion on days when I’m out in the sun for hours on end. It goes on light and possesses no odor – great for cooling and soothing dry skin. Conveniently, it comes in a 50ml can which fits nicely in my carry-on, making it a practical travel buddy that gets the job done. It also has a budget-friendly price tag to boot!” – Patrene Mathieu, Designer

Smith’s Rosebud Salve In A Tube, $6, available at Sephora

“To be honest, I don’t really bring a lot of skincare products with me when I’m on the plane as most flights I’ve been on are quick ones that take less than 5 hours but the one product I always carry with me is a lip balm! My lips tend get really dry when I’m flying so I always ensure that I bring one with me to keep them moisturised. My current favourite is Smith’s Rosebud Salve. It gives the lips a slightly glossy look, keeps the lips moisturized for long hours and it’s not heavy or sticky. Especially obsessed with the pretty packaging and the rose scent!” – Nurasyiqin Sedik, Media Executive

Origins Make A Difference Plus + Rejuvenating Moisturiser, $82, available at Origins outlets

“The best thing you can do to keep your skin hydrated is drink plenty of water and this applies more so on a plane. A super dehydrating element whist flying is the air-conditioning. For those who have been on a long haul flight, would attest to wanting the right consistency in temperature that doesn’t leave you feeling like a prune or like an icy pop. I always make sure I pack a small toiletry bag with my on the go products, one of which is the Origins Make a Difference Plus+ Rejuvenating Moisturiser. I received a sample of this moisturiser recently and have been squeezing to use every last drop. With the help of ingredients like Lychee and self-hydrating Rose of Jericho, my skin feels hydrated and relaxed. ” – Eleni Kontorigas, Media Executive

Transparent Milk Tea Exists, And It's Hurting Our Brains

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but Japan has some of the weirdest food and beverage trends around. You can come up with some weird-ass idea, and we’ll bet that 90% of the time you’ll be able to find in Japan. Of course, Japan also has loads of delicious foods like baked cheese tarts and Tokyo Banana, but it’s the more unusual trends that really pique our interest.

netizens-are-going-crazy-for-this-transparent-milk-tea-thats-world-of-buzzCan you trust your eyes?

Suntory, which you might know as one of best whisky distilleries in Japan, has released a line of transparent beverages that have been taking everyone by surprise. Transparent beverages might not seem like anything new; after all water, vodka, juice, and even tea are all common beverages that are naturally transparent. Here’s the thing – Suntory’s new Premium Morning Tea is a transparent milk tea. In our years of reviewing food, we never thought we would see a day where we would use ‘transparent’ to describe a milk-based beverage. Milk itself is milky – an opaque white drink, so how in the world can there be a milky drink without the milky look?
sbf0570-1

Premium Morning Tea Milk, not mislabelled water

As if they were trying to make your head hurt more, Suntory claims that the milk tea is not artificially flavoured to retain the transparency. Because it wouldn’t stop bothering us, we actually went to search how Suntory managed to create a transparent milk-based beverage. It turns out that milky beverages are milky because they contain lactic acid bacteria when you ferment milk. Instead of using milk or skimmed milk, Suntory uses extracts from whey, a clear byproduct of milk! ABSOLUTELY GENIUS.

Apparently, the drink tastes unmistakably like milk tea. It also has caffeine in it to wake you up since it’s meant to be consumed in the morning. The only thing that you’ll find missing is the creamy texture of milky drinks. We love our milky drinks full of creamy deliciousness, but we can’t say that Suntory didn’t under-deliver on what they promised us. This transparent tea is part of the Suntory Tennensui line, Suntory’s premium mineral water line, which would explain the water-y consistency.

rung-dong-nuoc-suoi-vi-tra-sua-bat-ngo-lo-dien-sai-gon-35eec3aa636440199194136704

Still not convinced?

This isn’t the first transparent drink that Suntory has released. Previous drinks such as  the Yogurina water, which as the name suggests tastes like yoghurt, and the Premium Morning Tea Lemon, a lemon tea flavoured drink, are also transparent. Considering the popularity of the drinks (seriously, everyone is just singing their praises on the internet), Suntory is on a streak. We are already looking forward to the next drink! What’s going to be next? Transparent coffee?

You won’t be able to try the Premium Morning Tea in Singapore because they aren’t importing it even though it’s widely available in many Japan convenience stores, but you can always convince one of your friends to bring a bottle back from Japan for you. While you’re at it, get them to bring back the entire range of transparent waters too! If you want to stock up on it, you can also order a 24-pack of the elusive transparent milk tea from Q0010, which comes with free shipping worldwide.

These Gorgeous Hi-Fi Systems Are Also Designer Furniture Pieces

Ah, the holy grail of “two-in-one” – that vital factor that convinces you to buy a certain product over alternative choices. Why get a sofa when you can settle for a sofa bed, right? Well, that same idea is behind La Boite Concept’s swanky, high-end Hi-Fi systems that aren’t just Hi-Fi systems. They’re designer furniture pieces too.

Wait, how does that work you may ask? Isn’t furniture just…furniture? And aren’t speakers just speakers? That’s where we fill you in. There’s actually a niche market where designer furniture merges with the audio market in a beautiful alliance.
Take La Boite Concept’s AP 160 for instance. This universal fidelity Hi-Fi system is loudspeaker, TV stand, and storage compartment all at once. It’s crafted from gorgeous fine-grain wood, and has a sleek minimalist design that comes in either black or white.

Here’s a closer look at the built-in speaker

There’s also the Cube Series, a collection of wireless table speakers that can function as both a table and a stereo system. Disappointingly, it doesn’t come in the shape of a cube (that would be so rad), although it does have a cute, retro look that would jazz up your home in an 80’s sort of fashion.

Lastly, there’s the LD 130. It kind of looks like a mini-foosball table without the football players, but it’s actually a desk with a built-in speaker on its front, and knobs right on top to get that perfect sound going for you.

It may all be a little too expensive for the average folk – normal audio products would suffice, like these great portable Bluetooth speakers. Although if you’re loaded with cash, and want to pimp up your home without taking up too much space, then La Boite Concept’s range of Hi-Fi systems should really be explored.
If you’re interested in checking out the products first-hand, head down to the La Boite Concept Showcase from Nov 17 to 19 at the Atrium outside AV Intelligence at Millenia Walk from 11am to 8pm.
