Remember scrolling through Tumblr looking up fantastical images of couples vacationing at exotic locations in rather widely unrealistic settings, i.e. on a mattress in a van by a cliff or in a tent suspended by the tilt of a frosty mountain? Well, thank the law of attraction because that staged lifestyle of luxury is now available to everyone.
Glamping, as it’s being termed in 2017, has been a popular trend adopted by teenage cliques and honeymooners worldwide, following the success of affordable travel options like boutique hotels and Airbnb. Basically “glamorous camping,” glamping is perfect for Instagram-obsessed individuals who want to appear earthy without actually setting up a tent or breaking a sweat.
Our jobs involve trolling the Internet and geeking out over pretty things, so we’ve naturally located the top glamping sites across the world we’re super excited to visit this holiday.
Treasure Bay, Indonesia
Much like Sentosa is to Singapore, Treasure Bay is to Indonesia a highly-glamorous resort city off the coast of Bintan island filled with family and water-oriented activities. What more, it’s just an hour’s travel away and costs SGD7 to enter. The region is completely tourist-oriented, which means you can be rest assured your every needs will be taken care of. Check out the multitude of zones from water theme parks that keep kids busy to patio bars which can help you get turnt while experiencing the coastal magnificence of the bay.

Stay at The Canopi, a glamping site located right next to Treasure Bay’s iconic Crystal Lagoon. A vast man-made beach paradise with pristine water, you’ll be able to get a baking tan before retreating into a spacious tent surrounded by the lush flora of Treasure Bay.
Khao Yai, Thailand
We always turn to Thailand when we need a quick getaway that’s affordable, which helps when we want to splurge. Unlike the conventional streets of Bangkok with street food and great shopping, Khao Yai — a 3-hour drive from Bangkok — looks and feels completely different. If you’re up for some hiking in the woods, stay at their Kampung-hut lookalikes which truly provide stayers with that rustic vibe of a true camping trip (but with air-conditioning and a fully-functional bathroom).
Much of Khao Yai’s environment looks like a replica of Italy, which is perfect for those into photography. Of course, that won’t negate your opportunity to taste Thailand’s wonderful cuisine and be imbued with their local culture. Plus, the weather.
Banyan Tree Al Wadi, Dubai
Anyone who’s ever stayed at Banyan Tree Hotels knows it’s world-class. From personal pools to its natural-environment aesthetic, it wasn’t a huge leap for it to branch into the glamping arena. Al Wadi Desert is an exclusive desert resort (oxymoron much?) which exquisitely accommodates your needs to feel like Arabian royalty just one-hour away from the Dubai International Airport.
Cool off at the Al Khaimah beach before heading into a falconry centre to get up close and personal with, you guessed it, falcons. Or ride camels and horses. Luxuriate in their spas, play golf and enjoy authentic cuisine before heading into your very own Bedouin-style tented villas designed using traditional Arabic architecture amped with sophisticated modernity.
