HUAWEI’s P60 Pro Smartphone has a gorgeous Rococo Pearl Texture Design that makes every piece unique

HUAWEI always manages to do something extraordinary with their new P-series line of smartphones. Last year, they released a foldable version with Dutch couture designer, Iris van Herpen — the P50 Pocket. This model took on the 3D micro-sculpture design that Iris van Herpen is famous for, and was gilded in an iridescent gold finish to complement the premium look of the phone.

Above: The HUAWEI P50 Pocket in premium gold set against an iris van herpen scarf.

This year, they’ve wrapped their new P60 Pro in a Rococo Pearl texture, and being a natural material, that means every phone is unique with no two having the exact same finish.

Above: The HUAWEI P60 pro in rococo pearl, photo courtesy huawei.

DESIGN AND SPECS

The pearl texture is the mobile industry’s first, and incorporates natural mineral pearl powder to achieve the Mother of Pearl-like texture (there’s also a deep feather-sand Black version of the phone that’s gorgeous in its own right too; it uses anti-fingerprint feather-sand glass to create the soft sand-like texture, but reflects light beautifully like a diamond).

Apart from the premium finishes that the phone comes in, the P60 Pro has a new Quad-Curve Display where all four sides are slightly curved resulting in a more immersive display. The rest of the general specs are what we would expect from HUAWEI’s highest-end device — the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, a 6.67″ durable Kunlun Glass display, a 120Hz screen refresh rate, IP68 dust and water resistance, and supercharging (charges to 50% in 10 minutes).

Above: the 88W charger that comes in the box, photo courtesy huawei.

It’s an impressive phone to hold and use, but what’s exciting with every HUAWEI P series launch is the smart imaging features that get better and better with every new device. With the P60 Pro, we once again see a full upgrade and reconstruction of the camera’s optical system.

CAMERA

There are three lenses: a main 48MP Ultra Lighting Camera (the aperture of f1.4-f4.0 is a physical one and can auto-adjust), a 13MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera (f2.2), and a 48MP Ultra Lighting Telephoto Camera (f2.1). There’s 3.5x optical zoom, 100x digital zoom, macro mode, portrait mode, a light painting mode, and a whole bunch of other Pro functions to explore.

Above: the three lenses on the huawei p60 pro, including a main 48mp ultra lighting camera with an adjustable aperture of f1.4-f4.0.

What’s notable is that since its global launch in March this year, it holds the number one ranking on DXOMARK for smartphones (at the time of writing). The review says that it has outstanding performance in macro mode and that there are high level of details at all zoom ranges. Here’s our experience with the camera system:

Above: a good mix of highlights and lowlights inside the USS attraction, Lights, camera, action!

Above: super macro shot of grilled salmon skin. incredible detail and nice bokeh.

Above: good clarity and detail on the mahjong tiles.

Above: the camera system is definitely good enough for product shoots. Here we’re using the phone’s portrait mode at 3.5x zoom.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The HUAWEI P60 Pro is a beautiful premium device with really high-end specs for a phone. If you’re a HUAWEI user, this is a worthwhile upgrade, especially for the camera. You’ll undoubtedly enjoy the smoothness and clarity of the screen, the speediness of the processor, and one of the best camera systems in a smartphone.

Above: The Huawei P60 pro with Huawei watch buds.

Some things to note though — this isn’t a 5G phone, and it runs the EMUI 13.1 operating system. It’s Android at its base, but there’s no Google Play Store or Google apps out of the box. But it’s easy enough to set up and install; just open the HUAWEI AppGallery and search for the Google app you want. I managed to sync and transfer my pictures from the P60 Pro to Google Photos, and then download them to my Mac for featuring in this article.

With any HUAWEI smartphone, it’s more a mental hurdle the consumer needs to get over; that you can’t use your Google apps on the device etc. etc. But that’s really not true. It just takes some workaround (yes, it’s not as convenient or straightforward as a Samsung, OPPO or Xiaomi), but it works.

The Huawei P60 Pro is priced at $1,548 and available on Huawei’s official store on SHOPEE.

ASICS SS23: Their Most Comfortable Running Shoe Yet, And A Beautiful Sportswear Series Designed By Women

Heat wave got you down? Not for ASICS. With cooling fabrics, the coolest sportswear-meets-street sneakers, and as usual, next-level running shoes — the GEL NIMBUS™ 25 in particular — that give us more reason to exercise, this season’s picks are all Spring/Summer blockbuster hits in their own right.

Not so coincidentally, these all tie in very well with the Japanese brand’s new manifesto, ‘Nothing Feels Better than Moving with ASICS’, a movement we can participate in with the #NothingFeelsBetter hashtag on social media. “Moving with ASICS uplifts the mind, and this has always been our founding purpose and mission,” said Gabriel Yap, Regional Marketing Director of ASICS Asia, while also sharing about the positive power of movement.

The goal here is to get us moving wherever we are — hopefully off the couch and into the gym — whether it’s by developing their most comfortable running shoe yet in order to help us take each step with ease, or a women’s activewear series, designed by women, that inspires us to keep ourselves active and energised.

Ahead, we give you a lowdown on the Spring/Summer 2023 launches that we’re most excited about.

THE GEL-NIMBUS™ 25

Runners, listen up. The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS™ 25 is the elite running shoe to get, since it uses the most advanced technology, designed via athlete-training testing, in order to develop the best specifications for what they’re calling “the most comfortable running shoe”.

A culmination of 18 months of development work, the shoe features a new PureGEL™ technology that’s softer and lighter than previous editions, while enabling the softest landings to date. It’s also strategically integrated in the midsole for even better shock absorption and smoother transitions.

Then there’s improved underfoot cushioning too, via an energetic FF BLAST™ + ECO cushioning that further contains 20% more foam for literally more spring in your step; this feature is also made with at least 20% bio-based material from renewable resources.

The running shoe is also upgraded with a soft and stretchy knit tongue and collar construction for a flexible and more adaptive fit around the ankle. A new knit upper makes for a visually stunning shoe, while we like the seamless design and fresh colourways too, presented here in hero shades of coral and bright blue.

In other words, they’re telling us to get used to running harder and faster than ever, since we’re about to feel lighter and more comfortable while doing so too.

above: GEL-NIMBUS™ 25 in ISLAND BLUE/SUN PEACH and papaya/dusty purple, $259 each. more colourways HERE.

NAGINO COLLECTION

When it comes to purposefully crafted activewear for women, who better to trust than fellow women, who’d intuitively understand our bodies’ requirements — and no doubt, aesthetic concerns too? Cue the NAGINO™ collection, a series of cross-category sporting apparel and shoes that we’d describe as beautiful.

Just look at the colour combinations here; pastel blue and light peachy pink make the cut, in ombre tones that evoke sunrise mornings at the beach. Beyond that, each of these are functionally designed to enable women to move freely, and inspired body confidence while working out.

The collection name itself is just as inspiring. ‘NAGINO’ is a combination of two Japanese characters, 凪 (NAGI) that refers to the calmness of the sea and a stable emotional state, and 乃 (NO), which stands for individuality. The series, thus, calls for women to seek solace in movement, especially amid the busyness of daily life.

In terms of its range, the functional product line features items suitable for performance running, training, tennis, studio work such as pilates and yoga, and SPORTSTYLE, suitable for casual wear. Running apparel, for instance, sees a quick-drying run unitard made with a premium heathered knit fabric that both flatters the figure and provides essential support; high-waisted run shorts are thoughtfully shaped to increase one’s freedom of movement as well. Pair this with the new GEL-NIMBUS™ 25, or the bouncy and lightweight NOVABLAST, in matching pastel shades, of course.

While looking at the training options, the Flex Seamless Bra and Seamless Tight are no-brainers in shades of Fawn (rose-nude) and Light Steel (pastel blue), though we’ve got our eye on the versatile Flex SS Top that has a stylish back opening to generate more airflow.

For street kicks, the EX89™ sneaker is a versatile number that takes on the retro court aesthetics of the GEL-EXTREME™ basketball shoe from 1989. The layered leather upper makes it ideal when worn with jeans, or any outfit you’d like to style it with, while we also love the heel wedge that’s now updated with FF BLAST™ cushioning.

above: the NAGINO™ COLLECTION, from $45 to $259.

SPORTSTYLE — GEL-NYC™

If you didn’t already know, ASICS’ SPORTSTYLE range is a unique category that brings their expert sports technology to everyday lifestyle wear; it’s here that we see plenty of collaborations with renowned designers as well.

The recent pairing of the GEL-NYC™ silhouette and Awake NY‘s street-style sensibilities, for instance, sees the dad-shoe design decked out in pretty unconventional colours — purple and gold, or teal and pink. Designed by Angelo Baque and his team at Awake NY, they’re no doubt made to stand out as Baque’s ode to New York City, and are likewise inspired by vintage culture as well.

In fact, the GEL-NYC™ sneaker itself is a mash-up of an early 2000s GEL-NIMBUS™ 3 that forms the shoe’s upper, blended with the GEL-CUMULUS™ 16 shoe’s tooling system and today’s technology for comfortable longwear. This season, we’re looking at industrial-style colourways of Black / Clay Grey, Cream / Steel Grey, and White / Ivy,

The most useful Apple HomeKit accessories and devices for a smart home in Singapore

Now that Apple HomePods are finally in Singapore, we can live out our HomeKit dreams and command Siri to do things around the house that our hands normally would have to. It’s not us being lazy, it’s just making daily tasks more convenient. But I have to admit, the accessories for the Apple HomeKit system aren’t as many as those available for Google Home and Amazon Alexa; and it took a fair bit of Googling (love the irony) to find devices that are sold in Singapore and work for the Singaporean household.

I was disappointed that Hunter ceiling fans (currently one of the very few ceiling fans that work with HomeKit) only offer the HomeKit option for the US market, and not for Singapore. Also, almost all Xiaomi home appliances — like the popular Mi cameras — don’t integrate with HomeKit. Just in general, be prepared to pay more for HomeKit compatible devices (eg. Mi cameras are around $55, while Logitech Circle View cameras are $259).

Here are the ones I managed to get my hands on, are easy to set up, and work well with the Home app.

Philips Hue Bridge + Lightstrips

I was deciding between Philips Lightstrips and the Nanoleaf ones and read a lot of bad feedback about Nanoleaf’s connectivity, with most users saying that the Philips system is more stable. So here I am fitting out my desk, wardrobe and bed with the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus (not the gradient one — those cost quite a fair bit more). I had to buy the Philips Hue Bridge as well in order to use these lights with HomeKit, but it’s worth it. I feel like a million bucks commanding my lights to turn on and off, to change colour or to just dim or go brighter. It’s addictive and now I want to change all my recessed ceiling lights to the Philips Hue downlight and do the same thing. All in good time.

Philips Hue Bridge, $79 / and Lightstrips, from $90.25 for the 2m base kit, available on Amazon.sg.

Belkin Wemo Smart Plug with Thread

This plug is really straightforward; it toggles anything connected to it on and off. It will work well with lamps and fans that have its own switch (you have to leave the switch at the “on” position), and for any appliance that starts up once power is turned on.

I tried it with the Dyson Lightcycle Morph and it wasn’t helpful at all, because with the Dyson lamp, I need to manually tap the top of the arm to activate it. But with a sunset lamp that I bought on Shopee with a traditional switch, the Wemo perfectly controlled it.

This was probably the device that had the easiest set-up of all. The Home app detects the device when it’s turned on and prompts you to add it as an accessory. Perfect integration with HomeKit.

Belkin Wemo Smart Plug with Thread, $39 from APPLE.COM.

Logitech Circle View Camera Security System

I had some initial frustration setting up this camera; it requires the user to be on a 2.4 GHz Wifi instead of 5 GHz, and that meant trying to configure my Singtel Wifi router to run on 2.4 GHz, and then switch back to 5 GHz when I’m done with the set up (the 2.4 GHz is only needed for the initial set up). But somehow resetting the entire camera by pressing the back button for 9 seconds did the trick, and I managed to connect the Circle View to my iPhone and have it appear in the Home app.

It’s a wide-angle camera that both streams and records, and is able to set automations such as turning on the desk light when it senses someone walking into the room. I do like that the camera itself is compact and can mount in various positions, plus you can turn it down for privacy when you don’t want to be recorded. It’s a tad pricey for a security camera, but its slim form factor and ability to integrate with HomeKit make this the ideal security camera for Apple users.

Logitech Circle View Camera Security System, $259 available on SHOPEE.

Sensibo Air PRO

This little device takes over your aircon remote control, and makes it smart. Connecting and setting this up takes a few minutes, but once you’re done, prepare to be amazed. You can now instruct Siri to turn the AC on or off, or change the temperature and fan speed. Like I said, it’s amazing. And if you install the Sensibo app, this guy can also read the air quality in the room and give you real-time updates on VOCs and CO₂. It’s good info to know so you can open the window for some fresh air when you’re wondering what’s causing that headache.

Unfortunately, you need one Sensibo per aircon unit, which is going to get expensive if you have several ACs that you want to turn smart.

Sensibo Air PRO smart air-conditioner controller, $204, available on SHOPEE.

Apple TV 4K

This one is a no-brainer. If you want a smart TV that can work with Apple HomeKit, the Apple TV 4K device will do that for you — and more. More importantly, if you don’t own an Apple HomePod, the Apple TV 4K acts as your smart home hub, and allows you to set up all your other HomeKit accessories.

I really do like the included Siri Remote; it has a touch-enabled clickpad that’s simple and intuitive to use, and it also feels and looks good.

Apple tv 4k, from $200.85, available on APPLE.COM.

Switchbot Hub 2

Switchbot is a great solution for a smart home hub if you’re on a budget. Their Hub 2 is fully HomeKit compatible, but it can only sync the brand’s curtain controllers, not other functions like the aircon remote or the Switchbot bot (this device is so simple but so useful — it acts as a physical finger to turn your switch on and off). But I’m crossing my fingers that an update will come along from the brand, and there will be more support for HomeKit with their other devices.

Switchbot hub 2, $109, available on OSTSOME.COM.

A new shu uemura cleansing oil, but make it foam. Botanicoil Foam.

shu uemura cleansing oils have always been my only go-to when it comes to removing makeup and cleaning the face. It’s one of those “if you know you know” beauty products that you swear by or you’d never try (because you’re scared of). But after 23 years of washing my face with this and nothing else, I can safely say that I’ve found my holy grail of anti-ageing skincare.

Above: The Botanicoil Indulging Plant-Based Cleansing Oil, $72 for 150ml on SEPHORA.

The yellow variant of the oil was the original formula that I started with in my early 20s and it still remains my favourite version today. It has been updated over the years countless times, but believe it or not, it smells almost the same as it did back then, and hallelujah! It works the same too. If you’ve never tried a cleansing oil, I’d recommend this one in a heartbeat; it works for all skin types and feels like silk on skin. Also, after you wash it off, your skin will also feel like silk.

There’s a 50ml bottle of this on Sephora if you just want to give it a try, plus this size is great for travelling with.

Other popular variants of the cleansing oil include the Ultime8∞ Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil and the Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant And Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil — these I’m told are the best sellers and are also suitable for all skin types.

Above: The Ultime8∞ Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil, $72 for 150ml on SEPHORA.

The Ultime8∞ Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil has what the brand calls, a cashmere-like texture, and includes incredible ingredients like Japanese Camellia, which has anti-inflammatory benefits. There’s also Korean Ginseng that helps the skin retain its elasticity, and Golden Bamboo full of vitamin E and anti-oxidants.

Above: The Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant And Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil, $62 for 150ml on SEPHORA.

The Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant And Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil is infused with green plants like Japanese Uji Matcha, which is well-known for being a strong anti-oxidant. If you feel like your skin is very polluted (eg. from the environment), then this version is for you.

Which brings us to the new version that’s for everybody — especially those who haven’t tried any of the brand’s famous cleansing oils. This is the Botanicoil Gentle Amino Cleansing Foam:

Above: The Botanicoil Gentle Amino Cleansing Foam, $55 for 125ml on SEPHORA.

For anyone who hasn’t washed their face with a cleansing oil because “it’s an oil!”, a foam texture is certainly far more acceptable. This formula is mild, it has no soap, but is instead infused with amino acids and Japanese Yuzu extract so it’s close to the skin’s pH (which is a good thing).

And if you’ve been wanting to try cleansing oils, this formula includes a blend of nine essential oils that calm the skin and are relaxing to the senses.

The texture comes out of the tube rather fluid, but lathers up beautifully with a little bit of water. While the product description claims that this is fragrance-free, it actually smells fresh and clean, and these are natural scents that come from the essential oils in its formula. I love that the skin feels really smooth and soft after rinsing the foam away. If you get a chance to try this, you’ll be hooked as well.

The formula is gentle so it’s suitable for not just all skin types, but for sensitive skin as well. You can use it in the morning to remove overnight sebum and impurities, and at night to remove makeup and grime from the day.

The Botanicoil Gentle Amino Cleansing Foam, $55 for 125ml on SEPHORA.

Review: Price meets performance with the PRISM+ Q Series Ultra QLED Google TV

When you buy a TV, you’re making a very important decision. How big it should be, what apps it can play, how good the screen is, and most importantly, how much it costs. And when you buy the right TV for your room, it becomes priceless; you’ll get hours of enjoyment out of it, so it’s necessary to choose carefully.

Prism+ recently launched their Q-Ultra series of televisions, and it’s the brand’s top-of-the-line range, where as they say, price meets performance. Just like all their other TVs, the design is sleek and minimalistic:

Above: The Prism+ Q65 Ultra QLED Google TV, image from the prism+ website.

The bezel is nice and thin, maximising the screen size (there are 55″, 65″ and 75″ models), and out of the box, it comes with legs so you can stand it on a console. You can also arrange to have it mounted on a wall with a fixed mount or one that swivels. Here are the current prices from the Prism+ website.

Above: Prism+ q series Ultra QLED Google TV prices, image captured from prism+ website.

What’s new and special about this new line is really the quality of the screen. It appears extremely bright, with good contrast and excellent colour saturation, which means blacks are super black and colours like red and orange appear strong and vibrant. It’s a feast for the eyes and certainly comparable to TV screens that cost twice the price from other brands.

Prism+ has also incorporated Dolby Vision for a cinematic visual experience, and Dolby Atmos for 3D spatial sound. Whatever you’re screening — from movies to games, it will all look and sound incredible.

Above: The Prism+ Q65 Ultra QLED Google TV (with playstation camera on top).

And as a Google TV, you can access all the necessary apps on the Google Play store, including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, and you can hook up an Apple TV for that added content too. Many users will like that Google Assistant is built-in, so you can command the programs with your voice. And if that bothers you, you can turn the listening function off too.

Above: The bezel is thin and sleek, maximising the screen size.

The new Prism+ Q Series Ultra QLED Google TVs aren’t just decent televisions, they are really good value for what they’re retailing at. For the quality you get with one of these sets, you’ll be happy with it for years to come. Also, before you purchase one of these, check out the promos on Prism+ (there are currently codes for up to $500 off the discounted price, plus freebies including free 3-year onsite warranty).

Dior presents their newest iconic bag: C’est Dior

The C’est Dior bag is the luxury fashion house’s newest design, and one that suits the modern woman perfectly. It’s made to be practical and elegant; it features softened lines that define the structure of the roomy bag, with a sturdier base so it sits beautifully when placed down. There’s the necessary adjustable chain that allows the bag to be carried by hand, on the shoulder, or slung cross-body, and it’s available in three sizes: small, medium and large.

The leather version will come in cognac, latte or black (I’m sure we can expect more seasonable shades in the months to come), and it features the initials of the founding-couturier stamped proudly on the bag’s front. This signature can also be seen on an ornamental gold clasp, adding to the bag’s iconic look.

Other variations of the C’est Dior include it crafted in the iconic Dior Oblique jacquard fabric and in raffia-effect fiber punctuated with macrocannage or marinière motifs. See everything below.

The Best Nude Eyeshadow Palettes for Natural Smokey Eyes, from Chanel, Dior, NARS, Gucci Beauty, M.A.C and shu uemura

Nude eyeshadow palettes are a staple in every makeup box. The right palette will take you from natural, flattering looks in the day, to intense smokey eyes at night. Choose one with a good mix of light and dark colours (preferably brown tones), and play with the highlight shade to add dimension and depth to the eye. And when you discover the one that’s right for you, you’ll be reaching for it every day. Here are our current favourites.

CHANEL LES BEIGES EYESHADOW PALETTE

I love almost every product under Chanel’s Les Beiges range of makeup, and the eyeshadow palettes have excellent formulas that are soft, smooth, pigmented and are able to create natural, healthy eye looks. These shades can be used as eyeshadow, a base, eyeliner or even to intensify brows.

CHANEL LES BEIGES EYESHADOW PALETTE, $116, AVAILABLE IN 2 SHADES AT CHANEL’S E-SHOP.

DIOR 5 COULEURS COUTURE – LIMITED EDITION EYESHADOW PALETTE IN 533 RIVAGE

This limited edition palette is from Dior’s Summer 2023 makeup collection, which is all about expressing creativity and personality. The eyeshadow shades are a complementary mix of golden browns with an intense coral, and have a marine-inspired pattern engraved with the Christian Dior logo on top.

As expected, just like all other Dior eyeshadows, the powder is soft, smooth and fine, and really easy to blend. It has just the right amount of metallic shimmer that isn’t over-the-top, but still manages to beautifully enhance the eyes by reflecting light. These are fairly nude colours that won’t create intense, smokey eye looks, but this palette combination is great for weekends at the beach, or visits to the in-laws.

Dior 5 Couleurs eyeshadow palette in 533 Rivage, $116, available at SHOP.DIOR.COM.SG.

NARS VOYAGEUR EYESHADOW PALETTE IN SUEDE

I love that this palette is so compact, I can toss it in my bag and bring it everywhere with me. There are six wearable shades that allow me to create natural day looks, and more intense night looks, which is why this is the one I’ll travel with.

The powders are pigmented as well — I wouldn’t expect anything less from a makeup artist brand — and are a very good mix of matte, shimmery and metallic textures.

Nars voyageur eyeshadow palette in suede, $49, available at SEPHORA.

GUCCI BEAUTY PALETTE DE BEAUTÉ QUATUOR MULTI-USE QUAD PALETTE

Gucci Beauty has some of the smoothest and most pigmented eyeshadow powders, as proven by its previously released limited edition eyeshadow palette. Needless to say, every product released by the brand is so pretty to look at and hold, giving us just another reason to want to own these new eyeshadow quads.

There are three colour palettes to choose from, with our favourite being 01 Summerina Brown — a good combination of light and dark colours. And with Gucci, what you see is what you get; these are great shades for everyday wear, with a rosy cream texture that can be used for eyes, cheeks and lips.

GUCCI BEAUTY PALETTE DE BEAUTÉ QUATUOR MULTI-USE QUAD PALETTE, $120, AVAILABLE IN 3 SHADES AT SEPHORA.

M.A.C CONNECT IN COLOUR EYE SHADOW PALETTES

M.A.C recently changed all their eyeshadows to these new 6 and 12 pan palettes, and they are some of the most beautiful products we’ve seen from the brand in recent years. The outside packaging features a surreal illustration designed by LA-based 3D Artist, Kathryn Blake, and there are new specialised hinges that enable the compact to stay open at any angle. The eyeshadow powders are extremely pigmented (we expect nothing less from M.A.C), and the colour combinations offered are well thought out and practical.

For the 12 pan palette, go for the shade, Unfiltered Nudes; these are flexible and wearable neutrals that can highlight and sculpt, and are easy to use. For the 6 pan palette, we recommend the colour combination, Bronze Influence; it includes earthy golds, olives and taupes, plus a deep sky black that you can create glamorous looks with.

M.A.C connect in colour eye shadow palettes, $77 (6-pan palette, available in 4 shades) / $99 (12-pan palette, available in 3 shades). Available at ALl M.A.C Cosmetic Counters, Lazada, iShopChangi and Home Concierge (88921214).

SHU UEMURA CHROMATICS4 EYE SCULPT EYESHADOW PALETTE

shu uemura recently launched four eyeshadow palettes with metallic, chrome-finish shades. The palettes are small and compact enough to travel with, yet the powders are large enough to last you for months. The shades are named after and inspired by the four seasons — Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter (the last two are featured here), with beautiful coppers, browns, greens and pinks.

The powders are extremely smooth and glide on skin beautifully — possibly one of the best I’ve ever tried in an eyeshadow formula. I love the mix of matte and metallic textures in each palette combination, and as you can expect from shu uemura, the powders are very pigmented; what you see in the pan is what you get on the eye. You can really have fun with these.

SHU UEMURA CHROMATICS4 EYE SCULPT EYESHADOW PALETTE, $75, AVAILABLE IN 4 SHADE COMBINATIONS AT SEPHORA.

shu uemura x peko limited edition collection dropping 1st June 2023

shu uemura teams up with Peko Chan, the official mascot for Japanese confectionery company, Fujiya. Peko was born in 1950 as a promotional character of Fujiya cake shops, and she remains 6 years old forever. Peko is also really famous; if you’ve visited the sweets and chocolates aisle at Takashimaya, Don Don Donki or Isetan, you’ll recognise her in a heartbeat. She’s that super cute mascot plastered on Milky candy, with her chubby cheeks, big smile on her face, all while constantly licking her lips. Peko is now so much more than a candy girl, she’s got her own merchandise, a BE@RBRICK, and now, a beauty collection with Japanese brand, shu uemura.

For this collaboration, Peko is re-imagined in a futuristic form (hence she’s all silver), with her likeness slapped on shu uemura’s famous cleansing oil, face brush, lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes. It’s easy to fall in love with everything not just because it’s all so cute, but also because the makeup colours are fun to play with, and actually very wearable. Here are some eye inspirations from the brand:

[Click on the images to enlarge]

Lipsticks include shu uemura’s rouge unlimited kinu satin in the shades peach taffy (a soft peachy beige), and watermelon gum (a fresh pink red); and rouge unlimited kinu cream in orange gumballs (a muted candied orange with a milk candy scent), cinnamon whip (a burnt warm brown also scented with milk candy), and nectarine drops (a muted red orange). Everything sounds, smells and looks delicious.

There are also face colours in M milky caramel and P strawberry parfait, the brand’s iconic ultime8∞ sublime beauty cleansing oil, the best-selling hard formula brow pencil in the shade seal brown 02, and the petal 55 foundation brush.

Levi’s® Goes Big For The 150th Anniversary Of Their Classic 501® Jeans

It’s not every day that we get to inhale 150-year-old jeans, but thankfully, the 150th anniversary offerings from Levi’s® are fresh as ever. Of course, we don’t mean literal crusty jeans; the 501® jean, the world’s first pair of blue jeans, has seen constant updates over its 150-year history, which this May, culminates in a full-fledged collection and event that honours its heritage.

Called the ‘Levi‘s® 501® Experience’, the two-day pop-up event is happening on 20 and 21 May, at 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Rd, and is set to be the place where denim lovers can converge while taking part in denim workshops, customisation services via the Levi‘s® Tailor Shop and invited local artists, exclusive early access to new collections, and performances by homegrown DJs. Entry is free for all, and you may register early at bit.ly/levis501experience to snag yourself a mystery door gift.

THE LEVI’S® 501® EXPERIENCE RETAIL SHOP

The event will play host to the Levi‘s® 501® 150th anniversary collection, which will retail exclusively at the pop-up.

The capsule series features the Levi’s® 501® Original Banner Pant ($149.90), The Trucker Jacket Banner Trucker ($154.90), and other accessories with the colourful print on denim, as well as 501® logo tees. For the men, you’ll be getting access to the Levi’s® 501® Original Rainforest Rigid Selvedge ($214.90), while the collection introduces the 501® Jeans for Women Gold Digging edition ($299.90), two timeless-looking pairs made with premium denim that will stand the test of time.

Customers will also receive a Levi’s® tote bag and enjoy a complimentary customisation service at the Levi’s® Tailor Shop with every purchase at the Levi’s® 501® Experience Retail Shop.

THE LEVI’S® TAILOR SHOP, WORKSHOPS & MORE

Denim customisation has, thankfully, been made available at the brand’s ION Orchard store, though they’re keen on bringing this experience to the anniversary event too — complete with special 150th anniversary patches, or custom embroidery and distressing. Local artists Lovage & Ken (20 May) and Tobyato (21 May) will also be on hand to give us even more options, with their art on flash designs we can use on our jeans.

To qualify for a complimentary customisation service, simply purchase any item at the Levi’s® 501® Experience on 20 and 21 May, or any pair of 501® jeans at select Levi’s® stores between 12 to 21 May.

501® Jeans for Women Gold Digging, $299.90

Want to learn how to upcycle old denim? Go ahead and sign up for a denim workshop with FIN Crafted Goods, a creative studio who will teach us how to repurpose defective jeans into keychains. Workshops will take place at 1pm – 3pm and 4pm – 6pm on both days, available for on-the-spot registration at the pop-up; the first 15 participants to register per session will receive a complimentary Levi’s®-branded denim repair kit.

Look out for creative contributions from our thriving local community too! Just for this anniversary event, Levi‘s® has commissioned artists including Mr Sabotage, Lovage & Ken, Tell Your Children, Tobyato, FIN Crafted Goods and students from LASALLE College of the Arts to each design a pair of 501® inspired by their own 501® story. These custom 501®s will be displayed at the Levi’s® 501® Experience.

PARTY WITH DJ CLAMMR AND DJ TINC

There’ll be not one, but two, anniversary bashes to look forward to. The first is a NewJeans-themed party on 20 May, 6pm to 10pm, in honour of the k-pop group and Levi’s® latest global ambassadors. DJ Clammr will be helming the decks, and will give us an upbeat selection of NewJeans and K-pop’s latest hits. Then, on 21 May, nightlife veteran DJ TINC will be up on stage from 4:30pm to 8:30pm, for a sundown event that will end off the festivities on a high.

EXCLUSIVE LAUNCH: THE 1873 XX WAIST OVERALLS

Levi‘s® Vintage Clothing pays homage to the original pair of 501® jeans with a super exclusive launch — the 1873 XX Waist Overalls.

This is the first accurate re-creation of the original blue jeans created in 1873, and involved Levi‘s® Historian Tracey Panek and the Levi‘s® Vintage Clothing design team looking extensively at pieces from the Levi‘s® Archives and historical artefacts from the time period, where in the early days, vintage Levi‘s® where mainly worn by miners and construction workers. These research went into determining the fabric choice, construction, stitching, rivets, and all the little details that go into the new faithful recreation.

2023’s pair is a high-waisted, wide-leg fit that’s crafted from natural indigo-dyed 9 oz. plain selvedge Loomstate denim. The most obvious details would be the back pocket, interestingly made without the arcuate stitch that we’re more familiar with, an unriveted center back cinch, and a watch pocket on the waistband. You may also spot a gusset at the crotch, unbranded rivets and sew-on buttons,  as well as all-denim pocketing and exposed selvedge at the waistband, which are all details authentic to the period.

The 1873 XX Overalls launches worldwide on 20 May 2023. Limited quantities will retail exclusively at Levi‘s® ION Orchard, B2-23.

The “Levi’s® 501® Experience” pop-up event will take place from 20 – 21 May, from 11am – 10pm at 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Rd, Singapore 239007.

Entry is free for all, and you may register early at bit.ly/levis501experience to snag yourself a mystery door gift.

Step Into The Upside Down With The Upcoming ‘Stranger Things – The Encounter: Singapore’ Experience

Remember when Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” took over our FYPs, and when big baddie Vecna had a chokehold on our collective consciousness? It’s time to relive those wet squelching moments with this upcoming event.

Stranger Things – The Encounter: Singapore is set to bring the deep, dark, and dangerous Upside Down to sunny Singapore this June, and we highly recommend you to run, not walk, to the thrilling experience.

Brought to us by The Mighty Jaxx Group and Netflix, the immersive retail experience will be held at Bugis+ from 30 June to 1 October 2023, where fans of the popular Netflix franchise will get to walk in the shoes of our favourite protagonists — Eleven, Mike, Will, Lucas, and Dustin — in a world dripping with 80s nostalgia, and well, other less savoury monsters and their squelchy parts.

This event also follows the success of other similar experiences, namely Netflix’s Stranger Things: The Official Store, an experience that popped up in major cities including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris and Milan last year.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

With that said, here’s what you can expect for Singapore’s outpost. There will be two levels at Bugis+ dedicated to the experience — a complimentary Stranger Things Visitor Center on Level 2, and The Encounter on Level 7, which spans about 45 minutes and with entry tickets starting at $39 per person on weekdays.

If you’re a huge fan of Stranger Things, it’s obvious that Level 7 is where it’s at. The Encounter takes us back into the glorious 80s as we join Hawkin High’s Hellfire Club for Game Night, as well as a trip to iconic locations such as Joyce’s House, The Lab, The Upside Down, and even the creepy Creel House, flickering lights and all, before “things turn uʍop ǝpısdn”. While we’re not exactly sure what that entails, there are some hints that we can expect an encounter or two from Vecna and the Demogorgons.

Once you’ve managed to make it out alive with your souls and limbs very much intact, you’ll be in for several treats at both Scoops Ahoy and Surfer Boy Pizza, where, hate it or not, you’ve got to go for pineapple on pizza. Try before you deny!

A less scary but impressively immersive Starcourt Mall Area completes the 80s throwback, accessible with an alternative $15 Starcourt pass, where fans get to find a wide variety of exclusive Stranger Things merchandise.

Back at Level 2, this area is open to all mall guests, and features a Palace Arcade-themed area that allows for plenty of photo opportunities, a Demopets statue, and a retail zone for select Stranger Things merchandise.

Early bird ticket sales start from 16 May to 31 May, where fans can purchase discounted tickets, while regular ticket pricing applies from 1 June 2023.

‘Stranger Things – The Encounter: Singapore

  • Date: 30 June to 1 October 2023
  • Opening times: Mon to Thu, 2pm – 10pm ; Fri, Sat & Sun, 10am – 10pm. Time slots available every half hour.
  • Location: Bugis+, 201 Victoria St, Singapore 188067, Level 2 Stranger Things Encounter – Visitor Center and Level 7 Stranger Things Encounter – Event Hall
  • Tickets start at $15 for access into the Starcourt area, $39 for a full Encounter, while a Mega Merchandise Bundle Pack and Priority Pass is available for $109. A free opportunity is available for photo moments on Level 2.

Carousell Launches Certified Luxury, Providing Ease Of Mind When Buying Secondhand Luxury Goods Online

Shopping secondhand has become quite second nature for Singaporeans, a habit that’s been cultivated over the years thanks to the presence of online marketplaces such as Carousell. The brand, now over a decade-old, has established itself as a leader in the space, making it incredibly convenient to sell and buy products, while cultivating a sustainable (and cost-effective!) practice good for both our wallets and the environment.

With this recognition of our collective desire to shop secondhand, they’ve now gone one step further — by introducing Certified Luxury.

Fancy a CHANEL handbag? Or perhaps something from Louis Vuitton, Dior, or Gucci? We can trust shopping for these high-end brands right on Carousell, as the new programme ensures pre-loved luxury goods go through authentication checks from trusted experts, in order to assess the quality and legitimacy of the product.

According to the Carousell Recommerce Index, consumers are increasingly more comfortable choosing to buy secondhand. However, there is some hesitation due to concerns about the quality and authenticity of the item. Singaporean users said in a survey that they will consider buying secondhand items if they can have their purchases authenticated for quality, and/or have product warranty.

This observation has led them to launch a brand new way of approaching secondhand luxury; Carousell is keen on catering on making luxury bags more accessible for everyone, especially price-conscious individuals who know that it’s sometimes smarter to shop secondhand.

How Carousell’s Certified Luxury determines the authenticity of a luxury product

Beyond just an authentication programme, Carousell Luxury aims to make us feel at ease about the quality of the items we buy, especially when it comes to high-value products such as luxury bags and accessories.

For bags and wallets sold by the Carousell Official Store, these items go through a process of authentication by in-house professional experts, who perform thorough checks on each product’s serial numbers, material, stitching, hardware and the likes to ensure that its authenticity.

Once that’s done, the item is then listed as a Certified Luxury listing, complete with the red ‘Certified’ tag, so we’re assured an original, high-quality product. Its condition is also labelled upfront within the listing.

Besides the Carousell Official Store, ‘Certified’ listings are also sold by Carousell Certified Partners, who are reputable industry experts with years of experience in their respective fields. They themselves have also gone through verification checks with the company, and are trusted to maintain high standards during each and every inspection. If an item by either the Carousell Official Store or Certified Partners is found inauthentic, buyers will get money-back guarantee and also receive an extra $500 on top of the full refund.

Certified Luxury offers further convenience with free returns and various payment options

The programme even extends to free returns within 24 hours of delivery, no questions asked. Should you change your mind, and are in some way not satisfied with the item you’ve received, you may easily request for a return immediately on the Order details page.

Additionally, there are also multiple on-platform payment options for secure transactions via Atome BNPL, credit or debit cards, DBS PayLah! and PayNow. For Atome payments, you can also see a suggested instalment payment breakdown on the app for you to better decide on your preferred payment mode.

Here’s a summary of the Carousell Certified Luxury promise:

  • Authenticated by luxury experts that check on an item’s originality and quality
  • 24-hour change of mind returns, with no questions asked
  • Money-back guarantee with an extra $500 on top of the full refund if the items are found inauthentic

With Certified Luxury, it’s clear to see that Carousell is offering even more trust to its users — and by extension, choice too, as a robust secondhand market makes luxury more accessible to a wider audience. Pandora’s New The Little Mermaid Collection Features A Stunning Shell Dangle Charm

Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat? If you get way too excited adding thingabobs to your jewellery collection, and simultaneously can’t wait for the new live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid to drop, just know that the two worlds have collided in this new Pandora collection.

The Disney x Pandora The Little Mermaid collection, titled ‘Journey Beyond the Sea’, celebrates the new film that stars Halle Bailey as the beloved Ariel, set to be released in cinemas on 25th May. Similarly, the jewellery brand’s seven-piece collection launches on that date too, with styles that both pay homage to the Disney classic, while championing female empowerment and independence.

Soon to be part of your world are 14K gold-plated Seashell Stud Earrings, which ring in the under-the-sea theme with grooved lines and a white lacquered artificial pearl sitting luminously at the centre of each stud.

The other collector-worthy item would have to be the 14K gold-plated Shell Dangle Charm, which recalls the enchanted nautilus shell that held the Disney princess’ voice in the movie. This time though, it’s engraved with the empowering message “My voice is a treasure” on the spiral, as an ode to Ariel’s fearless spirit and sense of freedom.

The Disney x Pandora The Little Mermaid ‘Journey Beyond The Sea’ collection will be available from 25 May 2023, at all Pandora stores and online.

New Balance Celebrates This Year’s Grey Day With A New ‘Moon Daze’ Sneaker Pack & More

Looks like grey skies ahead with New Balance — and that ain’t a bad omen at all. The sportswear brand celebrates their annual Grey Day, an ode to the brand’s timeless grey colour, with concrete-coloured apparel, a new ‘Moon Daze’ sneaker pack and a Made in USA capsule series that dresses iconic sneakers in shades of grey.

K-pop star and brand ambassador IU gives us more reason to fall in love too, as she’s seen flaunting key styles such as the popular 550 and chunkier 9060 shoe silhouettes, in the following campaign images.

One question remains though — why grey? Those who consider grungy, industrial concrete and asphalt part of their aesthetic wouldn’t even bat an eyelid, though grey, at least in our Japandi- and minimalist-loving side of the world, is usually not as well-embraced. However, there is a reason why New Balance considers grey part of their legacy.

In the late 1970s, the white shoes of urban runners were often ruined and made unsightly thanks to harsh city conditions; as a solution to that, grey suede was introduced to New Balance sports shoes to make them more durable and to fit in with city surroundings. Today, the colour is a symbol of endurance and timeless versatility.

“To New Balance, the colour grey represents a history of innovation and serves as a global symbol of style — it is emblematic of our unique path forward,” said Chris Davis, Chief Marketing Officer & Senior Vice President of Merchandising at New Balance.

To honour Grey Day, New Balance is set to launch several exclusive new products including a premium Made in USA capsule that sees the 990v4, 990v6, 996, and 998 shoes, all manufactured in America, in stunning grey hues.

Made in USA collection, priced $379 to $399.

There’s also an exclusive ‘Moon Daze’ collection ($179 – $239) that imagines what our shoes would look like after walking on the moon. Sleek and grey, we suppose, with subtle signs of distress that would appeal to discerning fans. The series takes on three classic New Balance silhouettes in harmonious hues of grey, navy and slate — in particular, the 550, 580 and 9060 designs.

The New Balance Grey Day collections, available from 12 May on NewBalance.com, and at New Balance 1906 stores, Limited Edt, Foot Locker and JD Sports online.

Note: only the U990TA4 from the Made in USA collection will be available during the launch; the other models will be available from late June.

Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G has all the super specs of a flagship smartphone without the high price tag

Xiaomi announces their Redmi Note 12 series of smartphones, with the Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G ($469) and Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G ($569) available in Singapore from 13 May 2023.

We got our hands on a review set of the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G in Polar White, and had fun testing out its camera system. This smartphone has all the souped-up specs of a high-end flagship model, including a 200MP main camera, with ultra-wide and macro lenses, a 120Hz AMOLED display, fast charging with 120W HyperCharge, and Dolby Vision (for brighter and sharper videos) and Dolby Atmos (the first time on a Redmi Note) — all at an upper mid-range price of $569.

Above: the redmi note 12 pro+ 5g in polar white.

We do like the phone’s clean, minimalistic look, and it’s even sleeker in the Polar White variant that we have. Also, the camera lenses are housed in a metal module (the Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G’s lenses are in a plastic module), which feels and looks premium.

The large 5000mAh battery gives and impressive 149 hours of music,  19 hours of video, 39 hours of calls and 9.6 hours of gaming.

Above: the 200mp main camera lens on the redmi note 12 pro+ 5g.

The Flow AMOLED display is not as bright as traditional AMOLED glass screens but the difference is not obvious to most users (about 100-200 nits), but the benefit is that the screen is more resistant to shocks and cracks, and won’t break as easily.

The camera system is where you’ll have the most fun — especially with the seven film camera filters. Here are some examples we took:

Above: out cycling, with the kp160 (kodak portra160) filter.

Above: backlane, with the kodachrome 64 filter.

Above: no bicycle sign, with THe h-400 (hitchcock 400) black & white filter.

Above: walking path, with the kg200 (kodak gold200) filter.

Above: reflections at night, with the c-50D (cinestill 50d) filter.

If you’re a photo enthusiast and want the performance of a high-end smartphone, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G will give you value for your money. It’s a flagship-level smartphone without the premium price, and has the sleek looks of a designer phone. If you can live with less impressive specs, check out the Redmi Note 12 ($269) or Redmi Note 12 5G ($369).

The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G launches 13 May at authorised Xiaomi stores, SHOPEE and Lazada, and is available in 3 colours: Polar White (featured here), Midnight Black and Sky Blue, priced at $569.
