We Delve Into The Mind Of The Girl Who Memorised IKEA’s 2018 Catalogue

If you haven’t watched the viral video where a magenta-haired girl has gone ahead and memorised the entire IKEA catalogue, you’re definitely missing out. Here’s the thing: it’s amazing. She’s amazing. And we all wish we’d have that good a memory so we wouldn’t have to forget silly things like where our glasses are, important dates like the first time you hold hands with your significant other (we’re kidding, that’s not important, right…?), or just casually ace our exams because we’d be so friggin’ genius.

Here you go:

We can’t even say watch and learn.. or, can we?

For the launch of their 2018 IKEA Catalogue — with the theme ‘Make Room For Life’ that celebrates living rooms — the good people at IKEA Southeast Asia invited Yanjaa Wintersoul for the press event in order to flesh out the idea of how unforgettable a read it is. Clearly, it’s smart move and a nice touch to make the rather routine yearly catalogue come to life. So, they got the 23 year old Sweden’s Got Talent finalist, and two-time World Memory Champion, to willingly study the 328-page catalogue for just one week, all so she can do these amazing thing you see on the video, and basically make it look like a piece of cake while we’re left both fascinated and drowning in self-doubt.

What’s on the rug on Page 138? (The rug has a pattern of grey stars, there’s a little boy’s shoes, three crayons — yellow, green, red — and a huge red brontosaurus dinosaur.) Someone in the catalogue needs to go to an eye doctor? (The lady on Page 176, she has her glasses on the side of the chair and she’s straining to read a thick book — but if you need another page, then page 33, hung up on the wall is an eye exam poster.) Yep, stuff like that.

Screen Shot 2017-09-05 at 5.14.10 PM
Most of us would settle with maybe just remembering where certain items are on what page, and that would already be a feat, but Yanjaa’s skills go down to the very details, including what magnets there are on a nondescript fridge, how many times a particular chair she was sitting on had appeared, or answering abstract questions that customers might pose while shopping, such as where they can find a nice minimalist sofa. Move aside Three-Eyed Raven, you’ve been replaced.

Come on, you’ve got to be intrigued right. We were too — so we went right in for a short interview in order to pose some of our burning questions: how exactly does she do it, and how does she make room for all this stuff in her head? We speak to the world’s first IKEA’s Human Catalogue:

How did you end up working with IKEA on this project?

They wrote me an e-mail that said “urgent, urgent, can you memorise the IKEA products?”, and I said yes, and we did a couple of test runs, and started thinking, maybe we can start doing the entire IKEA catalogue.

Is this all this memory work something you’re already used to?

Yeah I’ve done it before. My first competition was in 2014 — if I remember correctly — and it was very hard in the beginning, but once you get the hang of memory techniques and how to memorise, within that first year, I was in the World Memory Championship team and I got the first prize for remembering the most names and faces. It’s very hard in the beginning! There’s like a steep learning curve, and then it’s easy, and it’s just easier and easier. I’d say it takes a couple of months to really understand it.

gallery01

How exactly does it work? Can you describe the technique you use?

So the technique’s like… basically this is the Lattjo [reaches for a plushie beside us], then you can think, okay, it sounds like matcha latte, then you think of this plushie being miserable because you put him in hot matcha latte, Lattjo — so associating it with things you already know and to find fun in it.

Were you ever doubtful of your own ability?

I wasn’t really, my mom’s always raised me to be confident and believe in myself, I think that helps. It sort of becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where you have a good memory, or you think that you do, and you’re more likely to spend the time memorising something. But if you think you have a bad one, you have a tendency to just not even make the effort to learn. Like, for some period of time, I thought I’d never get the tones right in Mandarin! It helps to be — even if you’re doubtful — to keep doing it until it starts making sense.

Screen Shot 2017-09-05 at 5.14.31 PM

Did memorising things come easy for you when you were younger?

No, I mean, I forgot to do homework, forget to send in my college application; there are different kinds of memory, and some people are better at remembering facts, and others event ones. It depends! You should feel for yourself what you’re better at naturally… For me, I sort of make short stories of whatever I want to learn.

What kind of memory would you call this?

It’s part event, or periodic memory, like going to the store with your friend, because I have been to my friend’s house and she has a Stocksund armchair than you can see on page 32, or last year, when I moved to my new apartment, I wanted this particular lamp I wanted. And then it’s a little factual too, with the prices. I think for a lot of people, we want to say we’re not selfish but it helps if you make things more personal. Like, oh, I know these people on page 17, then you’re like, it’s my friend’s house! It’s what’s important to you. Sometimes you meet a person and it’s like you’ll never meet them again, sometimes your brain doesn’t register their name, you know — but say, the person’s attractive, and all of a sudden your brain’s like, okay, I’ll remember this! [laughs]

Screen Shot 2017-09-05 at 5.14.47 PM

Most people have the impression that you have a brilliant memory, and does it get embarrassing when you forget?

Yes, definitely! Someone asked me about a red chair, and it was at the tip of my tongue, but because we were filming, and there’s a lot of people, I knew I wasn’t gonna come up with it, so I had to improvise. But then people are also very nice and understand I’m human, so! And then some people don’t, and run up to me and go “do you know me?!”, and I know I’ve never seen them before. So I go, “I’m pretty sure we haven’t met, so, let’s see… where have we met?” and they can’t come up with it.

Do you watch BBC’s Sherlock? What do you think of the concept of his “mind palace”?

Yes, yes, so that’s the thing, if you’ve seen that season finale, he just goes through folders, which is really not what a mind palace is like. For me, if I wanted to remember a room set, I wouldn’t put it in folders. Maybe he’s just a very boring person, but! You usually try to associate it with places you know well, so some of the room sets I’d imagine I’m redecorating my living room, so I’m walking through it and feeling the material and everything. That’s more an actual mind palace, not the whole folders thing!

su:m37's Cult Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick Is Coming To Singapore

Since we did this piece on cleansing sticks almost a year ago, this cleansing format has become a bit more commonplace. While they used to belong mostly exclusively within the domain of K-beauty brands, the trend has caught on in other parts of the world, and now even Western brands like Origins and Urban Decay (with their oil-based version) releasing their own take on the cleansing stick.
Let’s never forget who started it all, though: the su:m37° Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick, the OG cult cleansing stick that all the K-Beauty insiders were touting. It really took off after it was featured on South Korea’s most popular beauty variety show, Get It Beauty, and went on to cause long waiting lists of people clamouring to get their hands on this constantly sold-out product.

miracle-rose-cleansing-stick

What exactly is so good about it, though? It’s lauded mostly for its gentleness on the skin: with 92% natural ingredients such as handpicked rose petals for light exfoliation and fermented damask rose extract, and a pH level of 5, which is mild on the skin. It foams only lightly, and the formula is hypoallergenic – so those with sensitive skin can safely use it too.
And now, with the entrance of su:m37° into TANGS this year, the Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick will soon no longer have to be an out-of-reach product that you can only get in Seoul, or through third-party online retailers. Yes, it’s coming to local su:m37° counters next month!
Also coming in October: the Bright Award Bubble-De Mask Black, which is the deeper-cleansing version of the very popular Bright Award Bubble-De Mask, using bamboo charcoal, black quinoa and black tea to really get into the pores.

This luxury K-Beauty brand actually has quite a few other cult products in its selection – see what else to try here.

SanDisk Launches World’s Largest microSD Card with 400GB of Space

Remember the floppy disk? Or even how 2GB memory cards were considered huge back then?
Thank god those days are over. We miss them as much as we miss dial-up Internet, which is to say we don’t miss them at all. But somehow, even with increased memory in our smartphones and more storage options than ever, it’s still difficult to cram all those gorgeous high-res photos and 4K videos nicely in one space.

sandiskinsert

SanDisk has the answer for that though, and it’s coming in the form of the company’s latest product – the 400GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card, the world’s largest microSD card, and a monster of a storage option that gives you 144GB more space than anything else in the market.
The card, which is targeted at mobile phone users (specifically Android users), is able to store a mind-boggling 40 hours of Full HD video, as well as transfer files at 100MB per second; meaning it can move up to 1,200 photos per minute. And if that doesn’t sound glorious to you, well, check this out: the new card is waterproof, shockproof, temperature-proof, and even X-ray proof too.

“Mobile devices have become the epicenter of our lives, and consumers are now accustomed to using their smartphones for anything from entertainment to business,” said Jeff Janukowicz, SanDisk Research Vice President. “We are collecting and sharing massive amounts of data on smartphones, drones, tablets, PCs, laptops and more.
“We anticipate that storage needs will only continue to grow as people continue to expect more sophisticated features on their devices and desire higher quality content.”
The 400GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card comes with a 10-year warranty and SD adapter and should be available via www.sandisk.com, although when it’s coming out, SanDisk has yet to reveal. The card will cost US$249.99.

A Whole Lot More H&M Beauty Is Coming Our Way

If you’ve never explored the beauty section in the H&M Orchard Building and Raffles Place stores, we absolutely urge you to. Since the long-awaited launch of H&M Beauty in Singapore last year, we haven’t ceased to be impressed by how the products manage to be of such impressive quality, considering the low prices, and so beautifully packaged at the same time.
And from 13 September 2017, H&M is bringing the Beauty line to 2 more of its stores, at ION Orchard and VivoCity (finally!). This comes just in time for the AW17 drop, as well as a limited edition High Summer collection, exclusive to H&M ION, that features shades for the face, eyes and lips inspired by a sunkissed glow.

As for the Autumn/Winter colours, the focus this season is on a base of illuminated skin, set off by strong jewel tones on the eyes and lips, and ultra-glossy nails.

There’s good reason to stock up at the H&M ION and VivoCity stores: upon launch, from 13 to 17 September, purchase of 5 or more beauty products will get you a 20% discount; or spend $100 more over the weekend on 16 and 17 September, 2 to 8pm at H&M ION, to get a complimentary express manicure in-store.

You'll Seriously Consider Knitwear Thanks To This Uniqlo U Collection

Um, because we know we did. It’s already pretty hard to resist each season’s Uniqlo U collection, since we know that the design team is led by Artistic Director Christophe Lemaire, who always has his keen eye on thoughtful details on basics, and since it’s Uniqlo, the prices are wonderfully affordable too. So you know, we expect the same — great design, innovative fabrics and stitching methods, the whole “reinventing wardrobe basics” kinda thing, and the third collection, now in its Fall/Winter arc, certainly delivers on those fronts. What we did not quite expect though was the upheaval of knits.

Campaign Visual 03 Campaign Visual 13 Campaign Visual 14

Yes, in part, that means that Uniqlo’s giving us so strong a case for knitwear, that we’re currently devising ways we can style them into our eternally summer wardrobes, certainly a new way to think about the fabric eh. The second consideration comes about by way of how unique the knits here are.
We’re presented with a new fabric, called 3D U-Knit, that’s a “three-dimensional knitting technique that employs WHOLEGARMENT technology”, or in human terms, a technology that uses special machines to construct the entire garment as one piece, sans seams. Developed at the Innovation Factory, this comes due to a joint venture with the Japanese brand’s parent company, Fast Retailing, and Shima Seiki Mfg., Ltd., a leading Japanese manufacturer of knitting machines. We then get quality knitwear that’s comfortable, with the right fit — for both men and women.

X_403741_68_257F164C_A1_S X_402984_04_297F089C_A1_S

Women’s 3D Merino Ribbed Mock Neck Dress, $99.90 ; Women’s 3D Merino Ribbed V Neck Dress, $99.90 ; Women’s 3D Merino Ribbed Mock Neck Sweater, $59.90 ; Women’s 3D Soft Lamb Crewneck 3/4 Sleeve Dress, $99.90

For this season’s Uniqlo U collection, there are 3 dresses, a sweater and a skirt created with this technique — what caught our eye was a stunning red ribbed dress, that seemed to hug the model’s body in all the right places while still with that flow and movement in the pleats and flared cut. All the pieces also feature a modest range of colours, though certainly versatile ones such as black, navy, grey, cream, and for colour, an olive green and bright pop of red.

Women’s Double Face Chester Coat, $199.90 ; Women’s BLOCKTECH Trench Coat, $149.90

As is the case with most Fall/Winter drops, we’re also looking for good cold wear. Here, we get a roomy coat that you’ll want to pad up with, as well as a BLOCKTECH Trench Coat, which combines a matte cotton surface with BLOCKTECH technology that allows for windproof, waterproof and yet breathable wear. Sure, these sound like pretty standard properties on a utility jacket, but you have to consider that it’s a stylish trench coat now, with a functional hoodie to boot.

Women’s Heeled Short Boots, $79.90 ; Men’s Hi-Cut Sneakers, $79.90 ; Shoulder Bag, $29.90 ; Backpack, $59.90

Even the accessories have that chic-utilitarian vibe, from the sleek pouch to the backpack, and even heels that come with the recognisable details of a monochrome plastic zipper that blends in with the fabric.
Campaign Visual 01 Campaign Visual 11

For the guys, there’s lots to love too, including some nice wide fit pants and sweaters — what stood out though were the jackets, the kind we’d totally steal from the boyfriend’s wardrobes. The oversized look’s in, right?

X_402364_78_317F076A_A1_S 402363_08_317F075A_A1

Men’s Seamless Down Track Jacket, $129.90 ; Men’s Wide Fit Color Jeans, $59.90 ; Men’s Zip Up Blouson, $99.90 ; Men’s BLOCKTECH Mods Coat, $199.90

These in particular had us really envious. The parka/coat makes a great purchase for adventure seekers, while the down jacket — in women’s sizes too — uses a double-weave polyester fabric with Toray, and uses lesser stitches so it’s more able to withstand strong winds. We’re told that it’s made in a streamlined fit so you can have this on as innerwear, while the women’s style can serve as vests by simply unzipping the sleeves.
The only thing you need to do then, is to mark your calendar, yes, along with the J.W. Anderson launch too. There’ll be two drops for this one — the first, on 6 October and featuring most of the collection, and the second, on 10 November, with more heavy-duty jackets or knitwear.

Uniqlo U Fall/Winter collection, available exclusively at the UNIQLO Global Flagship Store at Orchard Central and online at uniqlo.com/sg, from $7.90 for a pair of HEATTECH Socks to $199.90 for a Men’s BLOCKTECH Mods Coat.

The Glorious Makeup Launches That September Brings Us

This is it: the final quarter of 2017 (!!!). As we enter September and take stock of all the amazing things the year has added to our skincare and makeup regimes this past year, the launches coming our way this week show us that despite all that we already have, yes, we’ll still be making room for these.

innisfree My Palette range

innisfree-my-palettes

When we first heard about these a month ago, we were instantly super, super stoked to customise our very own innisfree makeup palettes. Two weekends back, you might have gotten a chance to get first dibs on the palettes with the My Palette Station pop-up at Capitol Piazza; but if you didn’t, be glad to know that the full range has officially hit all innisfree stores. To recap: 137 colours across 7 makeup categories and 4 textures, which you can fit into 3 palette sizes. Go crazy.
By the way, we’re also giving away 3 sets of these palettes really, really soon – you’ll want to keep a close eye on our social media channels!
From $8, available at innisfree stores.

L’Oréal Makeup Designer Paris Le Stylo Smoky

le-stylo-smoky

You might not need to touch an eyeshadow palette or brush in a long time, because these nifty little sticks already have all that you need for eye makeup packed into them. On one side, a crayon tip that dispenses a cream-to-powder colour that’s intensely pigmented; on the other, a compact kabuki brush for all your blending needs. There are 8 shades, 5 metallic and 3 matte, and we’ve already got our eye on the #103 Almond Pink and #116 Aurora Sky.
$21.90, available at Watsons, Guardian, Sasa, major supermarkets and hypermarkets, and selected department stores.

NARS Aqua Glow Cushion Foundation and Powermatte Lip Pigment

nars-aqua-glow-cushion

NARS sure is coming fast and furious with the exciting launches this Fall. A gorgeous Fall colour collection aside, September sees the introduction of the brand’s first foray into cushions, the Aqua Glow Cushion Foundation (see it in action here), and at long last, its first matte liquid lipstick in the form of the Powermatte Lip Pigment.
NARS Aqua Glow Cushion Foundation, $68; Powermatte Lip Pigment, $40. Available at the NARS store and counters.

LANEIGE x YCH Collection
dotcushions
eyebrowcushioncara2
twotonemattelip

We look forward to this every single year, because the LANEIGE Meets Fashion collaborations never fail to make our hearts flutter. 2017’s tie-up with Korean fashion label YCH is no exception, not only because of the textured herringbone pattern adorned with pastel polka dots that can be found on the packaging, but also the all-new product included in the range: the Two Tone Matte Lip Bar. Yep, you read right – one of the most popular gradient lipsticks now comes in a matte finish.
See 4 looks created with the colours from this collection you can easily cop here.
$36 to $48, available at LANEIGE boutiques and counters.

Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation

laura-mercier

Laura Mercier’s cult Tinted Moisturizer gets plenty of love, but no one talks about their other base products much. Which is a real shame, because they’re pretty great! The Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation, for example, was quite a star find. If you prefer foundations matte, now you have the Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation, which is the kind of foundation that’s really designed to be worn in Singapore: sweat, humidity and water-resistant, 15-hour longevity, and with oil-controlling properties.
$80, available at Laura Mercier counters and Sephora.

shu uemura The Lightbulb Essence Essential-Oil-In-Foundation

17LB_essence_fdt_384_packshot (1)

And on the other end of the foundation spectrum lies this new entrant from shu uemura. We were especially excited about this, given that the brand’s previous foundation launch, the Petal Skin Fluid Foundation, remains one of our best foundation finds of 2017. This one’s quite different though: as the name implies, it’s an oil-based makeup, infused with essential oils from botanicals such as lavender, geranium and ginger. Which means the texture’s a lot more liquidy, with a finish that borders on glow-y. The main scent is that of lavender, which adds a nice aromatherapeutic element to your foundation application.
$88, available at shu uemura stores and counters.

iPhone 8 Set to Officially Launch on September 12

Get ready Apple fans. The moment you’ve been waiting for is finally about to come. On September 12, at exactly 10am PT, the technology giant will unveil its latest flagship phone – the iPhone 8, at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, along with a slew of other gadgets, including a new Apple Watch and other iPhone models.
But let’s stick to the item on everyone’s lips, shall we?

The iPhone 8 has been subject to numerous rumours this past year, some of them highly credible, with others bordering on the verge of garbage. However, in typical Apple fashion, there’s nothing officially known about the new phone yet, with very little revealed in a vague invitation sent to the media last Thursday (August 31).
In fact, we’re not even sure if the iPhone 8 will even be called the iPhone 8; that’s how secretive Apple has been so far. Last weekend, veteran leaker Evan Blass – who has an impeccable track record when it comes to tech leaks, tweeted that he heard the new phone would be called the “iPhone X”.

But X or 8, there’s no denying that the new flagship will be Apple’s most dramatically altered iPhone of all time, with suggestions that it could come with an all-glass design, facial recognition, wireless charging, the removal of the TouchID, and a brand new OLED display, all in three new colourways – black, white, and copper gold.

Other potential specs for the iPhone 8 could include AR capabilities featuring a rear-facing 3D laser, enhanced water resistance, and support for the Apple pen, although no matter whatever new features are added, it’ll probably be Apple’s most expensive phone of all time; according to KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo; who mentioned that it could cost over US$1,000 upon release.
Despite all this chatter, the only way to really find out what exactly the iPhone 8 is all about is when Tim Cook takes it out of his pocket on September 12. Till then, stick with us for more updates.

ASOS Extends Their Well-Loved Varsity Discount To All Singapore Students

If you’re a regular customer at ASOS, you might have noticed this little tidbit, flashing in bright neon yellow:

Screen Shot 2017-09-04 at 3.31.40 PM

That’s right! Consider this a PSA you need to blast to all your shopaholic friends. Here to make your back-to-school days way better, the trendy e-retailer’s offering a handy 10% discount code that you can use on any full-priced item within the site — all you have to do is register with your student email address, and you’ll get an exclusive code sent straight to your e-mail inbox! This will be valid for the duration of your degree or college course, i.e. the prime years where you’ll have to time to scroll through the site daily as a break while you’re researching, taking notes during lectures, and you know, other important things.
Screen Shot 2017-09-04 at 3.25.46 PM

Why do all of us shop at ASOS? One, because they’re always offering discount codes over the weekend, and two, because free worldwide shipping! And of course, the fact that they carry loads of cool brands and styles. Here’s our pick of some easy back-to-school buys you might wanna snap up right now.
Denim

ASOS Denim Dungaree in Stonewash Blue, $90.51 ; River Island Patchwork Denim Jacket, $140.08 ; Liquor N Poker Wide Leg Jean with Split Seam and Pearl Detail, $96.98

Is there a more fuss-free way to rock up to school? We don’t think so. Denim’s just as grungy and laidback this season — an overall style is something a little more unusual from the daily pair of jeans and still as fun to pull on, while a slightly oversized denim jacket is an easy way to make a simple dress look way more stylish than it really is.
A Unique Jacket
8365777-1-purple 8667849-1-blue 8203896-1-black
ASOS Denim x MTV Jacket in Purple Acid With Printed Back, $118.53 ; Milk It Vintage Overdyed Military Jacket With Bow Neck, $81.89 ; Only Embroidered Leather Look Biker Jacket, $103.44

Yeah, thick hoodies are probably really useful when it comes to freezing lecture halls and tutorial rooms, but how about springing for something more unique — after all, you’re sure to be needing a jacket once those intense studying sessions come rolling around (sooner than you think). Graffiti-style denim, camo print or embroidered leather all give off that It-girl vibe without trying too hard.
Millennial Pink Accessories
8126742-1-pink 8183295-1-pink 8467792-1-pink
Skinnydip Fringe Detail Backpack, $68.96 ; Mi-Pac Fold Top Canvas Backpack in Rose Pink, $64.63 ; Vans Old Skool Trainers In Pastel Pink Mono Leather, $140.08

Why not? If you’re part of this generation anyway, wear its colours loud and proud — as loud as soft pink goes that is. Still, backpacks in that feminine shade and monochrome sneakers to match aren’t a bad combi at all. At least, they’ll be that spark of colour against your all black/grey wardrobe.

A Roundup Of Everything We Know About Fenty Beauty So Far

It was just earlier this year when the first whispers begun – sometime in February, eagle-eyed Instagram lurkers spotted a @fentybeauty account being created, confirming the rumours that had been swirling about for a long time now: that Rihanna was starting a beauty line.
Our first real look at the Fenty Beauty colours was on badgalriri herself, as she sauntered down the red carpet at the premiere of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets in July. Her makeup for that event came in the form of subtle yet glamorous pinkish hues on the eyes and lips, and she posted a picture on Instagram with the straightforward caption: “Face by @fentybeauty”.

Face by @fentybeauty

A post shared by badgalriri (@badgalriri) on

And this week: the real countdown has begun, at long last. Fenty Beauty officially launches worldwide from this Friday, September 8; and in the lead up to this week, we’ve been given quite a few glimpses into what this brand will entail. From close-up looks to products to select shade names to a full-on campaign video, it’s all been exhilarating – yet there’s still so much more to be revealed.
While we count down to this Friday, where we finally get to ogle and swatch Fenty Beauty in its entirety, here’s what we know so far:

1. The brand launches September 8 2017 – and in Singapore, too.

This Friday, September 8, 2017: That was the magic date that was given to us right from the start, and according to the posts on the newly-created @fentybeauty Instagram account, the brand would be available for global shipping from fentybeauty.com. In an earlier post, it was also stated that the brand would be available globally at Sephora and Harvey Nichols stores.
And yes, Singapore’s part of the list. We can confirm that Fenty Beauty will be launching at Sephora ION when the store opens this Friday. We’ll definitely be there at the store to get first dibs on the collection, and show you all of it – so keep a close eye on our social media channels then.

2. The first drop will include lip gloss, and highlighter.

Mercifully, we didn’t have to wait too long after the first announcement of the launch date to get a first look of what we can expect from Fenty Beauty, in terms of products. Riri herself posted these two updates on her Instagram over the past few days, confirming that we’ll be getting at least one nude-toned lip gloss, and a highlight duo. And according to more updates on the @fentybeauty Instagram, a gold powder that could be a face or eye colour, and a pink-bronze powder pair that looks like a possible blush-bronzer duo.

3. Fenty Beauty will celebrate diversity.
We got plenty to ogle at with the release of Fenty Beauty’s first campaign video.

The immediate reactions to the video was to laud the brand for its inclusion of models from a wide range of ethnicities. Faces in the video include doll-faced Australian-Sudanese model Duckie Thot, American model Slick Woods who’s become famous for her shaved head and gap-toothed grin, and Halima Aden, the first model to make her way down the fashion runway wearing a hijab.
We’re quite certain this celebration of diversity – something every beauty brand should be working towards, really – will translate into a comprehensive range of shade options. No skin tone should feel left out when it comes to shopping for makeup.

4. Expect some pretty catchy shade names.
Ginger Binge, Moscow Mule, Trophy Wife, Killawatt. These are the confirmed shade/product names according to the above Instagram posts, but in this Instagram video below, model Camila Costa actually reveals a few more. The thing is… we can’t really make out what she’s saying.

You don't all have to be all the same, all the time. Coming soon. #fentybeauty by @badgalriri. #shadenames @camila_costa

A look through the comments shows that most people can’t, too. It’s probably a deliberate move though, to add to all the suspense – but at least there’s one thing we can figure out: we want that lip gloss, whatever it’s called.

Take a Joyride with Your Favourite Stars in Celebrity Car Wars

Good-looking cars. Even better looking celebs. Sounds like a dream come true, right?
Yeah…not quite; at least in Celebrity Car Wars – an action-packed reality TV series that pits some of Asia’s hottest celebs against each other in a battle for driving supremacy, where fame and fortune doesn’t count, and it’s all about natural instincts and pure skill.

CCWS2_mainKeyArt_with sponsor logo_FA
Sponsored by Caltex, this award-winning HISTORY Asia original series will be back for its second season on September 4, with the show’s sophomore run introducing brand new personalities who have to take part in tough weekly challenges, all without their usual chauffeurs and minders to ferry them around.
Insert theatrical evil laughter.

The new season will feature stars like Jarrod Schulz of Storage Wars fame, as well as Filipino model, actress, and TV anchor Phoemela Baranda; Thai actress Aerin Yuktadatta; Thai actor, model, and singer Guy Ratchanont Suprakob; Malaysian comedian Harith Iskander; and Hong Kong-based model and TV personality Dominic Lau.
Like last year, Singapore-based personality Bobby Tonelli will be the show’s host, while professional racing experts like Malaysia’s Alex Yoong and the Philippines’ Gaby Dela Merced and Michele Bumgarner will impart their sage advice to contestants.

And just as you’d expect, “normal” roads are thrown out the window, with challenges taking place at unconventional locations in the Philippines, like Mount Pinatubo for example – a freaking active volcano, as well as an abandoned nuclear power plant in Bataan, and a decommissioned U.S naval base at Subic Bay.

Of course, once you take away the limelight, every celeb is just a normal human being like you and me, and things can get messy especially when bring you emotions and ego into the fold, as seen in the season two promo video below:

Whatever the case may be; whether you’re looking to catch your favourite celebs get out of their comfort zone, or steal a sneak peak at the various vehicles on display in each episode, it’s going to be one heck of a ride when the second season of Celebrity Car Wars debuts on September 4 at 9.55pm on HISTORY, StarHub TV Ch 401.

You Can Now Create Your Own Custom Facial Serum With Kiehl's

By Adele Chan

At a time when consumers are more savvy, educated, and finnicky, the beauty brands have to continually innovate to stay relevant. I had the chance to experience one historical brand take its award-winning formulas to another level — personalisation.

At this year’s Kiehl’s World Day in New York, I was introduced to the brand’s Apothecary Preparations. It’s not a particularly new product because Google tells me it has been available in the US for a year — but it’s new to Asia and is finally making its way to Singapore. It is basically a customised serum; it starts off with a consulation with a trained Kiehl’s advisor who will identify the customer’s skin type, and skin concerns.

Prescription-Pad (1)

This is followed by a prescription of two potent “complexes” that are mixed into a bottled concentrate; with a label printed out, pasted on, and the final bottle packaged into a box. It almost looks like medicine, but that’s actually the appeal of this product. It pays homage to Kiehl’s origins as a pharmacy, where prescriptions were the norm, and it was all about addressing health needs and concerns. Today, Kiehl’s focus isn’t too far off; it’s about the health of our skin.

Screen Shot 2017-08-15 at 2.51.04 PM

There are five “targeted complexes” to choose from, and they each address the following concerns: wrinkles, texture, clarity, enlarged pores or redness. I chose to focus on clarity (for my sun spots) and pores (they can never appear too small). The “skin strengthening concentrate” that forms the base of the serum has an oil texture that actually feels silky rather than oily on the skin, and more importantly, it spreads well and absorbs quickly into the skin.
I’ve been using my prescription once a day since I received it at the end of March; it’s now been just over two months and I truly do like my personalised serum. Nothing bad has happened to my skin; there have been no unfavourable reactions, and in fact, I actually find that the skincare I use after this serum also absorbs better into the skin. So far, all good things.

Kiehl’s does claim that this potion is suitable for sensitive skin as well, but like any new skincare that we try, I’d recommend a patch test. Do note though, the individual complexes are said to be extremely potent on their own without the base concentrate, so the brand warns us not to apply them directly to the skin. Want to find out more? Check out their US website at kiehls.com/apothecary-preparations.

DID YOU KNOW that Kiehl’s is also known for their generous sampling? They encourage customers to try before they buy!

NYLON Team Picks: What We Actually Carry About In Our Bags

Your daily bag is a sacred space — we get that. You wouldn’t want a stranger or someone you just met looking in it, only your most trusted companions, and not because you’re afraid they’ll steal your phone. Nope. It’s because you don’t want anybody to know about the embarrassing receipts you hurriedly crushed and threw in, the strange cards or flyers or bit of chocolate wrapper, or the weird bits of unidentified tiny substances you mysteriously find at the bottom of your bag.
Today though, we’ll be nice and let you peek into ours — nah not the nightmare mess, just the holy grail of makeup items we religiously lug about every day because they’re that important. Here goes!

Amelia Tan, Associate Editor

I have a theme going on, yay! Plenty of millennial pink and white and bits of coral. As for why I carry them around, I feel like I can do a lot with just this set of items — a whole face of makeup really — while they’re versatile enough for touch-ups too. If I have zero time in the morning (or should I say “when”), I’ve got the Glossier Priming Moisturizer, Balm Dotcom and the Clarins sunscreen at hand to prime my skin and lips, followed by the Shiseido cushion compact as a base, especially handy since there’s already a sponge and a mirror for everything that comes later.
My Nudestix lip and cheek pencil gets really useful here; I apply three smooth strokes to wherever I want my blush that day (apples? more contoured?) and then blend lightly with my fingertips. After a touch of highlight from the Glossier Haloscope, there, a very natural look that’s healthy and presentable.
As for my lipsticks, I rotate them every few days or so, simply because I’m eager to try all the new ones that land on my desk, or whatever I have lying around at home. I can go up to 5 lipsticks at a time, but I always strive for natural shades alongside bright red or edgier colours. This week, it’s a nice coral matte and Elizabeth Arden’s latest lip gelato in a deep plum shade that’s slightly sheer for layering — I like the tingly cooling sensation as well.

  1. Glossier Balm Dotcom, US$12
  2. Glossier Haloscope in Quartz, US$22
  3. Glossier Priming Moisturizer, US$22
  4. Nudestix Lip/Cheek Pencil in Ripe, $37
  5. Shiseido Synchro Skin White Cushion Compact, $55
  6. Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Honey Mood, $25
  7. Elizabeth Arden Plush Up Lip Gelato in Black Cherry
  8. Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution, $74

My approach to beauty is incredibly bare-bones, so the items I carry in my bag pretty much reflect that. I never leave home without my trusty lip glaze to keep my lips moisturised with a flushed tint; a multipurpose balm to soothe any random rashes that might appear during the day (I get them way too often); and a handy perfume oil that was gifted to me by my other half – he knows I love earthy scents, so this one’s a lovely sandalwood-based fragrance to roll onto my pulse points whenever I need a quick pick-me-up.

  1. Lanolips 101 Ointment, $20.50
  2. Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt Perfume Oil, US$57
  3. 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Lip Glaze in Daiquiri, $42.50

I’ve been learning new things about my beauty habits lately, especially after last week’s Team Picks where I actually calculated the total cost of my beauty regime and died a little at the total. This week, I learnt that I’m a bit of a failure as a female. With only three beauty items in my bag, I suddenly felt like I was missing something, especially after seeing that some of my colleagues actually carry an entire makeup pouch in their bag. I carry only what I deem as essentials — a lip balm, to hydrate my lips when I’m not looking for a bold colour; hand cream, for my horrendously dry hands; and of course, every woman’s essential – a lip colour. I used to carry a tiny bottle of perfume with me as well, but I never bothered to replace it once it was finished…

  1. Soap & Glory Hand Food™ Hand Cream, £5.50
  2. Kiehl’s Mango Lip Balm #1, $17
  3. CLIO Virgin Kiss Tension Lip Oil Tint in Cinnamon Spice, $25.90

Staying true to my minimalist lifestyle, my bag is much the same when it comes to the beauty items I carry. I use KORA Organics Tinted Day Cream to even my skin tone — good coverage for everyday. My brow brush comes in handy for a simple touch up and a quick spray of CHANCE Chance always helps to keep me smelling fresh.

  1. Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Enchanting, $20.90
  2. KORA Organics Tinted Day Cream, US$48
  3. CHANEL Chance, $155 for 3 x 20ml
  4. Revlon Volume + Length Magnified™ Mascara Waterproof, $19.90
  5. Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, $10

I have to admit that I’ve been pretty lazy with my make-up game lately so I always have these products in my bag on standby just in case there’s that last-minute meeting (or date night) I have to prep my face for. Glossier’s Boy Brow is the latest addition to my essentials and I’m really loving how simple it is to use. I still haven’t mastered the art of shaping my eyebrows so the Boy Brow comes in really handy — all I have to do is just brush the product through my brows and they be looking good.
Other than that, my quick go-to routine just consists of concealing dark circles and redness, eyeliner and mascara to jazz up the eyes a little, powder foundation to even out my skin, lipstick to add colour to the face and a coat of balm on top for that glossy look. Really basic but still look put together. Also Biore sheets in my bag (love this product so much, been using it for almost 10 years now) just in case I didn’t feel like having make-up on my face anymore. 5 quick wipes and my face is free again heh!

  1. Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder in 56, $16.50
  2. Smith’s Rosebud Salve Balm, $18
  3. Biore Cleansing Oil Cotton Facial Sheets, $17.90
  4. M.A.C Eyelash Curler, $22
  5. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita, $31
  6. Maybelline Eyestudio Hypersharp Power Black Liner, $22.90
  7. Glossier Boy Brow in Brown, US$16
  8. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer in Medium, $19.90
  9. Bourjois Volume Reveal Waterproof Mascara, $18.50
  10. Clinique Cream Shaper for Eyes in Black Diamond, $27.80

I carry a lot of makeup with me (mostly lipsticks, duh? A girl gotta have options), so I always have my quirky-looking makeup pouch that I got from Korea in my bag at all times. There are definitely more items in it then just these few, but I decided to narrow it down to those I frequently reach out to.
The Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Pact is for when my face gets oily into the day. I use this at least two times a day because well, Singapore’s damned humid weather is relentless alright? My other two items are my daily staples as well. First, the lipstick of the day, which is currently the Yves Rocher Grand Rouge in 108 Satin, and the other my favourite lipstick that I have with me always no matter what — Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Fig. It was originally my mum’s but she gave it to me and I find that it’s the perfect shade of red — a dark blood red colour that’s still bold enough to brighten up my face.
I do also have chapped lips once in awhile and this cute little tub of Vaseline’s lip therapy comes in handy whenever I need to moisturise dem puckers. The mascara’s for touching up and it’s always a good thing to bring along a compact mirror (y’know, to check for peppers stuck between teeth or to re-apply my lipstick…)

  1. Estee Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Fig, US$28
  2. Anna Sui Compact Mirror, US$28
  3. Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Pact, $17
  4. Vaseline Lip Therapy, $4.90
  5. Etude House Curl Fix Mascara, $24.90
  6. Yves Rocher Grand Rouge in Satin, $18

Bella Hadid's A Roof-Hopping Roman Goddess In This Enchanting Campaign

Ah, Rome, the Eternal City. Birthplace of modern civilisation and home to some of history’s most iconic architectural masterpieces like the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica; a city that still holds much of the ancient while being a modern-day art, design and fashion authority.

It’s quite something to watch Bella Hadid make her way down the famed Spanish Steps (and quite something else to see the Spanish Steps free of tourist crowds for once), as Bulgari celebrated the launch of the new Goldea, The Roman Night fragrance, of which Hadid is the face.
Chosen to embody this Roman brand’s notion of a queen of the night, an enchantress that stalks through the dim streets and hops across rooftops, Hadid sure looks the part.

As a perfume based on florals like jasmine and tuberose, and surrounded by the heady notes of black peony, patchouli and vetiver, the Goldea, The Roman Night scent is as mysterious as this elusive goddess of the night.

The Bulgari Goldea, The Roman Night olfactory pyramid is made up of top notes of mulberry and black peony; a heart of night blooming jasmine and tuberose absolute; and a base of black musk, patchouli heart and vetiver. These combine to make a musky floral scent that is subtly intoxicating.

The campaign video tells the tale of Hadid as Bulgari’s Roman goddess, who escapes the dreariness of a sleepy concert to lose herself in nighttime Rome and all its golden magic, drawn by the hypnotic scent of the Goldea, The Roman Night perfume. Watch it for yourself on bulgari.com.

Expect More Denim in Nike’s Upcoming Collaboration with London Cloth Company

It seems like Nike is having a serious denim moment this season, kicking off its latest obsession over the indigo-coloured material with the hand-dyed LunarEpic Flyknit, followed by the “Aizome” Nike Air Force 1s, and just having recently unveiled the Nike Air Force 1 Silhouette also in denim as part of its Floral Sequin Pack. Now, the Swoosh brand is introducing yet another denim collection, in collaboration with London Cloth Company, the only mill in the UK that weaves denim, to give three iconic Nike silhouettes the denim treatment as well.
The Nike Blazer Mid LX, Nike Cortez Classic LX, and Nike Air Max 1 LX will sport the indigo-dyed fabric on the uppers resembling a textured herringbone pattern, while indigo-coloured leather will be used for the Swoosh, heel and tongue to accentuate the denim material. To finish off, the three shoes will come with vachetta leather insoles and gold-coloured lace tips.

According to Daniel Harris, founder of LCC, the yarn used is thicker than normal denim and is rope-dyed so that the garment will “slowly accumulate wear and develop character.”
In addition, these models are designed exclusively for women, and that could be both a bad and a good thing. More shoes to buy means more money depleting, but hey, pay day is almost here, so we ain’t complaining.

Why Your Skin Needs a Dash of Matcha to Recharge

Is it just us, or has everyone jumped on board the matcha train recently? The green tea powder was merely a popular latte when it first gained traction amongst hipsters, and now it’s sprinkled on top of every possible food item, and has even made its way into the beauty industry.
What’s so great about matcha?
Matcha may have picked up steam within the past few years, but it’s actually been around since the 12th century, frequently used during Buddhist ceremonies. The powder contains a high concentration of antioxidants to heal and boost immunity, so it’s no wonder the health-conscious have grown obsessed with this superfood.
Why do we need matcha in our beauty products?
While consuming matcha can do wonders for your energy levels, it’s said to have a similar effect on the skin when applied topically. The fact that this green compound is loaded with chlorophyll and incredibly high concentrations EGCG (epigallocatechin-gallate) or polyphenols, it has the potential to protect skin cells from free radicals, which makes it one hell of an effective skincare ingredient.
These antioxidants are known for behaving like fire extinguishers – they put out any inflammation and redness, thereby repairing sun damage, acne, and even scarring. So if you’re looking to brighten those dark spots, even out skin tone, and fend off harmful environmental aggressors, we have 6 matcha-infused solutions at the ready.
