Ji Chang Wook and Song Ji Hyo Turn On The Style with Fossil’s Smartwatches

Shaving one’s head. It’s a ritual that most Singaporean men are familiar with. But for popular K-celebrity Ji Chang Wook, being bald is now a reality. The Suspicious Partners and Healer star was recently enlisted in South Korea’s mandatory military service earlier this August, with losing his locks part and parcel of the process.
But before all that went down, along came Fossil.

Ji Chang Wook modelling for Fossil before military service

The fashion watch brand roped in Ji, along with fellow Korean celeb and Running Man star Song Ji Hyo, to spearhead the company’s latest campaign called Fossil Firsts, where users are reminded of their first watch and the memories associated with that watch, or to make new memories with a brand new watch.

Song Ji Hyo

The move made sense.
After all, Ji was embarking on a new adventure in life with the military. But while Song did not have the same commitments, her energy and personal style made her the ideal Fossil user. And interestingly, both Ji and Song were first-time Fossil users prior to the campaign, so they were perfect candidates to lead the next generation.
And the next generation is definitely at the forefront of Fossil’s plans. The Texas-based company recently unveiled its latest range of watches, or should we say, smartwatches, that boast a variety of futuristic features without compromising on style.

For instance, under the company’s Q Venture and Q Explorist collections, users can look forward to features like smartphone notifications, customisable watch faces, Google assistant, daily activity tracking, and even wireless charging – if you’d like to own the crème de la crème of smartwatch technology, that is.

If you want something simpler but equally as stylish, do check out Fossil’s Q Accomplice or Q Activist collections. More hybrid smartwatches than anything else, these timepieces look like regular watches but with added smartwatch features – notifications, selfie-function, and sleep tracking just to name a few.

Fossil’s smartwatches may not be anywhere near the realm of groundbreaking in terms of innovation (we’ll leave that to Apple and Samsung), but they are certainly attractive, and the company’s delightful blend of form and function more than makes up for it. Plus, if it’s enough to impress Ji Chang Wook and Song Ji Hyo, it’s enough to impress us.
Fossil’s latest collection of smartwatches are now available at all Fossil retail stores, Zalora, and coming soon to Lazada on 25 Sep.

NYLON Team Picks: Love At First Swatch

Today’s inspiration came while I was staring at my hand, coloured with liquid lipstick swatches because I just wanted to pick one shade, and then I thought: isn’t this an odd but universal beauty junkie conundrum? You find yourself at your favourite makeup store, obsessively swiping all sorts of formulas on the back of your hand — lipsticks, foundation, eyeliners, highlighters, what have you — only to end up with flicks and patches full of various colours and finishes. How does it look to a person who doesn’t care about makeup? When did we learn to all swatch the same way? Huh.
That said, swatching feels like something you have to do before you’re about to buy any beauty item; you want to know whether the blue eyeliner on that model works for your skin in real life, or whether the bb cream’s your exact shade, or the true texture of a foundation, or whether these new eyeshadow shades are as dreamily pigmented as they are on that last YouTube tutorial you watched, so, you swatch. From makeup to even skincare, I got our team to confess what we’ve swatched recently — particularly, the ones we loved enough to snap up:

Amelia Tan, Associate Editor
Item: Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Girl Next Door / Chic Phreak, $50
ameswatch
So um, RiRi dropped her Fenty Beauty makeup collection and I’m not that ashamed to say that I went crazy over it, obsessively watching all the ‘first look’ videos and lapping up all the publicity photos thrown at me on Instagram, all gorgeous and importantly, girls that represented all types and skin tones. Honestly, that philosophy’s already great to get behind, and then you realise, wow, the products actually perform above and beyond their expectations. Good things have already been said about the natural skin-like quality of the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, but being a bit of a magpie, I naturally went straight for the highlighters — I mean, have you seen that gilded Trophy Wife shade, the pigmentation’s #shinebright magical!
After zooming over to Sephora, I found myself right smack in front of the makeup counters and just overwhelmed, where do I start?! And somehow, this Killawatt highlighter duo caught my eye, simply because Chic Phreak’s such a beautiful rose gold. You can get a subtle sheen with Girl Next Door, but the gold glitter and peachy pink of Chic Phreak really stood out, especially on my skin. One quick swipe and I was all like ‘bitch, better go ahead have all my money’. The “supercharged” shade is loaded with superfine shimmer, and comes highly pigmented while still with a creamy texture, none of those too-obvious flakes. I was also told that this is a cream-powder hybrid, hence more longwearing, and it didn’t go on tacky like cream highlighters tend to do, or disappear like powder ones — this one stays on and melts into my complexion, then shows up on my face like I have the best lighting crew in the world. RiRi, go ahead and take a bow — we found love, alright.

Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief
Item: Heroine Make Impact Liquid Eyeliner Super Water Proof in 01 (Black), $18.90, available at Watsons
adeleswatch
When I asked NYLON’s Associate Editor, Tami for recommendations on a good waterproof liquid eyeliner, she introduced this one to me. She says that she uses it every day and swears by its staying power. I was apprehensive about it being a brush / pot liner (I’ve not tried one that’s as easy to use as a simple pen eyeliner), but once I got used to drawing with the brush, the formula is hands down the most waterproof out of any eyeliner I’ve ever tried in my life. I slicked it on in the morning before work, and at night when I got home, I splashed my face with water, blinked my eyes several times, and the liner did not smudge or budge. Then I took a wet ball of tissue and rolled it over my eyes, and still the liner did not come off or even run. Not only am I impressed, this is the one I’m taking with me to Legoland Waterpark. NOTE: The brush is quite soft and not in a good way; so it does take some skill to draw a smooth, neat eye line. Also, this eyeliner costs around $13 (¥1,080) in Japan, so stock up if you’re travelling there or know someone who is.

Patrene Mathieu, Designer
Item: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Alkaline, $32
patreneswatch
After lipsticks, eyeliners are probably my fondest makeup vice. I’m a sucker for bold winged eyes, even more so if it’s done in a colour other than black. Though I usually go for liquid liners, I was thrilled to try out this range of pencils from Urban Decay, mostly because of it’s wide spectrum of vibrant shades. It even comes in a metallic finish! I was spoilt for choice. In the end, I settled on a shade called Alkaline, a reddish maroon that unintentionally matches my bag and is probably my favourite colour right now. Colours aside, the application did not disappoint either. The texture was akin to a gel crayon instead of a pencil — which I loved — and it went on as velvety-smooth as promised and so wonderfully pigmented that I’m hell-bent on collecting several shades of it now. Although I’m not that crazily adventurous, I’m eyeing those metallic shades next…

Nurasyiqin Sedik, Media Executive
Item: NYX Vivid Brights Eyeliner in Vivid Sapphire, $14
syiqinswatch
I never thought I’d experiment with blue eyeliner until I saw this girl on Instagram rocking the blue liner look and it looks so good! So I went into Sephora to get the specific brand she recommended, but unfortunately the colour payoff was underwhelming on me. I then went around to search for alternatives and came across NYX’s Vivid Brights in Vivid Sapphire; swatched it on my hand to compare it with the other blue liners I’ve already swatched — yep, NYX’s stood out the best. I thought the neon blue looked really good against my tan skin, it is super pigmented and it didn’t smudge when I ran my finger across it unlike the others. Very proud of this makeup find because it’s super affordable too!

Jade Yeo, Writer
Item: RMS Beauty Lip Shine in Sacred, $40
jadeswatch
Generally, I’m not a fan of beauty products that are housed in jars and tiny pots, but this one’s an exception thanks to Rachel Nguyen of That’s Chic. In her ‘Bi-annual Favourites’ video, she swatched this shade on the back of her hand and applied it onto her lips, creating a lovely just-bitten effect. I immediately tracked it down in a local beauty webstore and hit “add to cart”. I can’t tell you how excited I got when it arrived in the mail and I finally got to try it out. Love at first swatch, indeed.
Because of the buriti oil and coconut oil in the formula, it glides on smooth and buttery, imparting a healthy sheen on my lips without leaving a tacky residue. The shade is described as “red with a gentle hint of pink”, but on my lips, the stain definitely leans closer to a pink which actually helps to brighten up the face (God knows I need help in that department). I’ll often layer this atop my 100% Pure Lip Glaze in Daiquiri to up its intensity.

Eleni Kontorigas, Media Executive
Item: Origins Drink Up™ Intensive Overnight Mask, $59
leniswatch
My skin has been prone to breakouts of late — I blame the humidity. Feeling determined to give my skin the proper hydration it’s been crying out for, I found myself at Sephora seeking a miracle product for help. My go-to skincare has been Origins and it’s fair to say, I am loving their range. The Drink Up™ Intensive Overnight Mask has been a life saver (for my skin situation, not actual life stuff). My routine has been consistent with my morning and night cleansing ritual — also using the Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash, then I apply the mask to a clean face at night. It’s certainly working; my skin is less irritated and my breakout congestion has decreased. Not just that, the smell is pure fruity heaven too.

Coca-Cola Japan Launches Coffee-Infused Coke for Hardcore Caffeine Addicts

Are you the sort of person that requires coffee the moment you wake up? It looks like a brand new savior has just arrived to save your caffeine-deprived soul, although you’d probably need a plane ticket to even try it.
In Japan – the land of the weird, kawaii, and rising sun – Coca-Cola has just launched Coca-Cola Plus, a drink that contains 50% more caffeine with 50% less calories. Sound too good to be true? Well, let us tell you that this is no farce.

IMG_9876-650x433

According to Shin-Shouhin, the new drink is a vending machine exclusive in Japan, with each 190ml can containing 34mg of caffeine and only 42 calories, with the coffee coming in the form of extract powder.
And as bizarre as this flavour may sound, this isn’t the first time Coca-Cola has launched a coffee-based product – that milestone belongs to Coca-Cola BlāK in Europe and the United States.
IMG_9892-650x433

As for how the new drink tastes like, Shin-Shouhin describes its aroma as “curious” and “odd”, adding that “it’s not a very delicious aroma” and that while the initial flavour is cola-like, the aftertaste is coffee.

Worth a try, we reckon. If you think the same way, just look out for the nearest vending machine the next time you’re in Japan!

Why Your Sensitive Skin Needs This Nourishing Ingredient

If your skin’s prone to irritation, chances are you would’ve researched on gentler options in the beauty market. Aloe vera, oatmeal, calendula, and honey are some of the key ingredients to look out for when you’re browsing, but here’s one more you can add to the top of your list: goat’s milk.
Why use goat’s milk instead of cow’s milk?
Yeah, it may sound a bit strange at first, but goat milk’s presence in beauty products actually dates back to Ancient Egypt. Goat’s milk is rich in essential amino acids to restore the skin’s protective barrier, and unlike cow’s milk, goat milk has a unique pH that’s similar to our pH, so it doesn’t irritate our skin at all. In fact, this pH balance allows the skin to absorb it much more easily.
How does it help my skin?
Goat’s milk contains plenty of vitamins, minerals, and proteins too, all in it to moisturise and pacify reactive skin. You may not even require as much moisturiser after a few weeks – it’s that hydrating. And as with milk from other sources, there’s lactic acid in goat’s milk which is a naturally-occurring alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It works to gently slough off dead skin cells, so you’ll notice more radiant looking skin with continued use. So go ahead and calm your skin down with these.

This Week's Beauty Drops Are Inspired By Our Childhood Favourites

Don’t you just love the world of makeup? Last week, we got on board the hype train of Fenty Beauty, and that’s not going away any time soon, judging from all the raving by beauty bloggers and regular people alike. This week though, we’re seeing two particularly exciting makeup announcements, both coincidentally eye palettes actually, based on that whole 90s nostalgia thing. Yeah, again. The skeptical part of us can’t help but roll our eyes at these obvious marketing ploys, and yet our inner kid’s jumping in excitement — it helps that we feel genuine excitement from the two brands involved though.
If you haven’t already seen them on your Instagram feed, Lime Crime takes on Polly Pocket with their latest eyeshadow palettes, while Storybook Cosmetics, an indie label we love for their whimsical collections, just announced a Charlie and The Chocolate Factory palette, based on one of Roald Dahl’s most well-loved children books. Here’s a quick sneak peek before we delve right into them:

First up, Lime Crime. Unabashedly targeted at the millennial crowd, we’ve got Lime Crime’s Pocket Candy Palettes that, straight-up, look exactly like one of those Polly Pocket cases we used to carry around, complete with the bright glossy plastic and huge bow on top. The packaging’s definitely on point, and it’s literally small enough to stick into your back pocket. See — they even come with that plastic wrap and cardboard backing we all can’t wait to tear off!

You won’t stand to lose anything inside though (R.I.P our missing tiny Pollys) because the interior of the case comes packed with a mirror and five supershadow shades. We’re told that these are full-sized versions so you won’t sadly hit pan in just a week, while they’re formulated with high-end pigments that give us a buttery texture with maximum payoffs.

As for the shade range, we’re privy to three different styles — Pink Lemonade, Sugar Plum and Bubblegum — though each set has shades meant to go well with each other, even if they go more pastel or poppy than we’re used to. Even the individual eyeshadow shades sound yummy; Sugar Plum sees Candied Plum, a pink-purple shimmer and Fairy Floss, a lavender/turquoise iridescent shade, that complements the rest of the brown-pink palette. Bubblegum’s more soft pastel, with a bright blue in the middle, while Pink Lemonade sees more warm neutral shades. Thankfully, the brand gives us some makeup references too.

Each Lime Crime Pocket Candy Palette goes for US$34, or you can get a trio straightaway at US$90. No word yet on when exactly they’re dropping, but we’re getting a cryptic “coming soon” on their official website.

As for the Storybook Cosmetics launch, their latest update on Instagram tells us they’re about to launch today, 2pm (CST), which means 3am Singapore time. Unlike Lime Crime’s slew of references though, we’ve only got swatches and shades for this one, but that’s exciting enough.

The ‘first look’ post that features the brand’s Charlie and The Chocolate Factory palette dates back to August this year, where they unveiled the 12 colours in the palette: Charlie Buckett, Snozzberries, Augustus Gloop, Mike Teavee, Willy Wonka, Oompa-Loompa, Fizzy Lifting Drink, Veruca Salt, Everlasting Gobstopper, Violet Beauregarde, Wonka Bar, and Golden Ticket. How’s that for a fantastical journey into the behemoth lair of Mr. Willy Wonka — the names alone are kooky enough to match his flair.
Of course, the entire palette is made to look like a book cover, and we also see the whimsical artwork of Quentin Blake all over the packaging, a name you probably know from picking up an actual book back in the day. If you look at the text, you might recognise the famous line by Mr. Wonka, the one he says while greeting each golden ticket holder: “tremendous things are in store for you.”

A post shared by @storybookcosmetics on

They also went with what they’re calling a muted watercolor palette “to really compliment the original artwork in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory books”, says the team. If you’re wondering, this limited edition piece is an officially licensed product, so no copyright laws are flouted here. Owning one must feel like scoring a golden ticket, and luckily, this time, it’s not luck-based at all.

Get New York Fashion Week Vibes With BONIA's Latest Bag Collection

If we’re talking about big, bustling cities that still manage to retain that dreamy charm, New York City is right up there. It could be an impression gleaned from decades of movies and television shows, from the old-school glamour of Breakfast at Tiffany’s to the high school boudoir of the Upper East Side in Gossip Girl, the fashionable set from Sex and the City and Devil Wears Prada, or one of those winter holiday flicks with snow swirling over Central Park. You get the point. Manhattan, with its glistening skyscrapers, busy avenues and promises of dreams come true is pure romance.
So we immediately get why BONIA’s all too eager to celebrate the lively urban metropolis on its latest series of handbags. Whether it’s sleek design motifs that capture the essence of the city, including a minimalist interpretation of its famous skyline, or boxy silhouettes and trendy floral cut-outs that channel New York’s experimental heyday in its 60s — or even today’s Fashion Week set — you’re bound to find something to love too.

 AW17 (56)
Skyline Sonia Collection

We’ll start with the most exciting motif yet — that gorgeous skyline you’ll see along the Hudson River, that perfectly captures the pride and joy of the city, all gleaming glass and steel structures that also recall America’s fine industrial period. What you’ll first notice about the Skyline Sonia collection is the iconic Chrysler Building, set tall against BONIA’s signature hatter-shaped bag design, with fine stitching on leather and contrasting metallic hardware.

Skyline Sonia in White and Dark Grey, $620

As with every city-goer who’s all too familiar with the day-to-night lifestyle, it’s fun to see that interpreted on the bags as well. The daytime version sees a less dramatic design motif, with the pure silhouettes of the buildings standing out in a clean monochromatic design; when night falls though, you’ll want to reach for the darker night versions, which feature Swarovski crystals embedded on a semi-gloss surface.
AW17 (50)
Express Collection Backpack, available in 2 sizes; $380 for Small, $480 for Medium

Now, we can’t imagine traversing through a city without a backpack, so thankfully BONIA places the right one in front of us. You may have an inkling that monogram bags are back, and you’re absolutely right — part nostalgia and part irony, wearing a brand loud and proud isn’t anything to be scorned at, hence this creative take on the backpack that sees the BONIA logo stamped across the leather. To add some quirky chaos to the Express collection, each backpack is emblazoned with colourful sticker-like patches that go together with the design for a dose of youthful street cred, so you can always set yourself apart when you’re on a trip or merely running errands.

Bailey and Bella Collection Tote Bag, $480

You know how obsessed people get with their pets right, especially in New York where you’ll see them and their owners taking a walk through Central Park or even Fifth Avenue boulevards. Rather than doing the whole Paris Hilton circa early 2000s with her chihuahua peeking out of her bag though, have your cute pooch by the side of your tote instead; whether you’re a dog or cat lover — we’re not taking sides — you’ll wanna stroll around too with either Bailey the dog and Bella the cat as your loyal companion. The distinctive designs are crafted with pieces of Split Leather, and are placed against detailed outlines of skyscrapers as a backdrop.

Bailey Collection Document Pouch, Taxi Collection iPad Pouch, available in various sizes

Being a girl on the go these days involves carrying your documents or electronic devices with you from meeting to meeting — hence we’ll see both Bailey and Bella on an Mini iPad Pouch, iPad Pouch, Document Pouch as well. If you’re looking for an even more vibrant design, hail down one of the pouches from the brand’s Taxi Collection; you’ll see the same pouches as well as a bright yellow tote bag, and most importantly, a yellow cab motif that faithfully replicates the unique icon of Manhattan, down to its checked sides. Seriously, try and get more ‘New York’ than that. These are the bags you’ll want to show off as part of your next street style capture — whether there are actual photographers or not.

MUJI’s New Flannel Collection is Comfy, Stylish, and Environmentally Friendly

Believe it or not, the fashion industry is actually terrible for the environment. Blame things like pesticides, toxic dyes, and discarded clothing, but there’s a whole lot more evil to fashion than picking out the wrong outfit. Thankfully, not every company is part of the eco-threat.
One good example is MUJI. The Japanese retail brand, which is known for dishing out plain and simple products that are aesthetically-pleasing, yet functional enough to satisfy your basic needs, has just unveiled a brand new flannel clothing collection that’s all about environmental sustainability.

muji_flannel

muji_flannel1

From flannel shirts to sneakers, each material used in the new collection is procured from ecologically sustainable sources; for instance, wool is gathered from sheep that have not undergone mulesing – a painful process where strips of skin are removed from the buttocks of sheep.
Also, only the best materials are used in the manufacturing process; the long staple cotton used for the apparel is handpicked straight from the fields of Xinjiang, China. The result? Softer and smoother shirts, with stronger fibre that has better resistance to damage compared to machine-harvested cotton.

But more than just pure sustainability, there are also plenty of stylish choices for shoppers to choose from. With checkered shirts, stand collar shirts, tunics, button down shirts, and even dresses, it’s flannel heaven with MUJI’s latest apparel collection.

Google Set to Launch Pixel 2 on October 4

Whether it’s on Facebook or at the dinner table, everyone can’t stop talking about the iPhone X.
However, Google has other plans. The tech giant will be hoping to steal some of Apple’s thunder with the launch of its Pixel 2 smartphone on October 4, which was confirmed by a new advertising campaign and official landing page that came with the cheeky suggestion of “thinking about changing phones?”

pixel2

Beyond that, details are fairly scarce. Advertising billboards in the US merely carried the message “Ask more of your phone”, which appears to suggest that a new and improved Google Assistant is on its way, although a brand new teaser video dropped more than a few hints in the form of questions.

Questions included:

  • What’s wrong with my phone’s battery?
  • Why is my phone always out of storage?
  • Why does my phone take so many blurry photos?
  • Why doesn’t my phone understand me?
  • Why can’t my phone update itself?
  • Why is my smartphone so slow?

Looking at this, it’s safe to say that the new Pixel will have better battery life, greater storage, an improved camera (possibly with optical image stabilisation), and instant Android updates.
We’re not expecting anything radical here, i.e. like how Apple ditched the home button for Face ID, although we expect Google to pull out all the stops here. As of now, the tech giant is still not a major smartphone player, but that could change once October 4 arrives.
If you’d like to receive updates on the Pixel 2, sign up for Google’s mailing list here. In other tech news, Singaporeans can now enjoy Google Wifi from the comfort of their homes.

Meet Yoyo Cao's Day-To-Night Scent

Bulgari’s Goldea, The Roman Night fragrance is a hypnotic scent that evokes a Roman goddess of the night, one that is embodied by the enchanting Bella Hadid in this recent campaign.
As much as we’d like to be just like Bella, leaping from one cobbled rooftop to another in the balmy Italian night, real life doesn’t bring us scenarios as exotic as that. So here’s some inspiration that’s a bit more relatable, in the form of street style star and NYLON Singapore cover girl Yoyo Cao, better known by her online moniker, @yoyokulala.

A post shared by YOYO CAO (@yoyokulala) on

We know and love Yoyo for her mastery of outfit coordination; it is in the deft way she layers her pieces that makes her style so enviable. And achievable, too. In this video for Bulgari, a spritz of the Goldea, The Roman Night scent transforms her from daytime chic to party-ready, and even with some accompanying dance moves.

While this fragrance comes inspired by the night, the sparkling fruity-floral top notes of mulberries and black peony ensure it’s fresh enough for daytime use. This evolves into middle notes of night blooming jasmine and tuberose before ending into a woody base of black musk and patchouli, so the mystery deepens as the day passes – just in time for whatever glamour your night calls for.
Here, two outfits inspired by Yoyo’s wardrobe – also our attempt to emulate her layering prowess – which we’d wear with a generous spritz of the Goldea, The Roman Night of course.

The Curious Bunch Of Objects Designed To Make You Really Uncomfortable

You know that one friend who’s a stickler for everything neat and precise and perfect? Well, go ahead and show them this, and watch their faces spontaneously convulse in seething rage from the sidelines. It’s a little mean yeah, but anything for that smile on your face right?
That’s if you can stand them, that is.

watering_can_02_p

How does this watering can work? The point is, it doesn’t. Athens-based designer Katerina Kamprani started The Uncomfortable project after failing to finish her studies in industrial design around 2011, and has since been growing it to the collection of objects it is today. And what a triumph it is — she nicely nails that bit of humour and irony in her product design, personally challenging herself to “deconstruct the invisible design language of simple everyday objects and tweak their fundamental properties in order to surprise you and make you laugh”. Obviously, that takes a lot of skill, plus some stellar creativity to boot. Speaking of boots…
20_boots

These are some cute rain boots huh! And totally useful when waddling around wet weather and the occasional flooding because… oh wait. While a lot of the items are conceptual 3-D visualisations, the designer has gone ahead to create prototypes for some of them, just for the dream of having these infuriating and perfectly annoying objects comes to life. You can totally buy prints of them online. Key among these are is an actual key with a flat head that you’ll never be able to twist, or a chain fork you can never use to stab your food.
key_01_p

chain_fork_01_p

wineglass_01_p

broom_01_p

Then, imagine how irritating it is to lift the wine glass to your face, only to realise that you can never get to the posh liquid within; or how exactly you’re gonna manoeuvre yourself to make sure every speck of dust picked up from that broom goes into the dustpan. The brilliance of Kamprani’s designs is that they don’t require much explanation — one look, and any sane person would be able to tell how exactly they won’t work, and why that’s immediately hilarious. Go on, have a go:
thick_set_01_p

10_chair_03

06_doorknob

That’s an inflatable door knob, by the way. Useful!
After this, you’ll probably gain some new perspective on the everyday stuff around you — from the ergonomics of your keyboard or mug or fork, to how perfectly your very normal door knob cups around your hands, to the functional design of the chair we’re currently sitting on. And finally, breathe that sigh of relief.

Topshop & Topman Are Treating Us To A Full Multimedia Experience At Their Upcoming Event

There are fashion events, and there are fashion events. Surely, you’ve seen those spectacular runway shows before on video, whether it’s one of Chanel’s amazing set pieces of a hypermarket or an Eiffel Tower or a towering rocket, Saint Laurent’s smokey, grungy rock ‘n’ roll halls, or the architectural marvels that form the backdrop of Louis Vuitton cruise shows. Hey, we’ll even include the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show here, because we don’t see how anyone can resist the live music and fun, flirty atmosphere. The only problem? It’s all on video. We’re not exactly right there to witness the magic, so we, at best, live vicariously through our screens or the people who can actually attend.
But things are about to change right here. See, when we heard what’s about to be at TOPSHOP and TOPMAN’s OPEN HOUSE, we jumped at the chance to tell you about it because it’s like being front row at one of those glitzy events, only this time it’s actually attainable. And everyone wants that right? Good news: you’re invited.

TS_01webb topman_8244831691611505web

In order to welcome the new Autumn/Winter season, the two high street labels are treating us to an entire interactive experience that you can immerse yourself in — think of it as an art installation, combined with savvy multimedia, and put together to showcase this season’s hottest styles. Over four days, four key trends will be highlighted across four varied spaces, each housed in its own room for you to marvel at as you make your journey across the exhibition.
Plus, there’ll also be other perks: a pop-up Chye Seng Huat Hardware cafe for your coffee fix, over-the-top ice cream by Three’s A Crowd (students can get them for free on 21/22 Sept!), while all visitors can receive a $20 voucher (min. $50 spend) when you visit the space.
We also got a peek at the concept of each room, so sit tight as we give you a heads up!

Firstly, TOPSHOP will be taking over two rooms, with the themes ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘Royal Heritage’.
Rocket Man
rocket-man
Clockwise from top left: Suede Link Ring Choker, $33.90 ; Studded Biker Jacket, $159 ; Skinnydip Crown Headphones, $79.90 ; Metallic Clutch Bag, $56.90 ; Honeydew Setback Heels, $196 ; Humbug Stripe Knot Front Shift Dress, $106 ; Humbug Red Striped Jumper, $149 ; Mid Wash Dree Jeans, $79.90
Even if you’re not a fan of glam-rock, you must know of music icon David Bowie and his legacy of out-of-this-world music — TOPSHOP rightfully channels the space oddity here as part of their dreamy ‘Rocket Man’ concept. You’ll enter a room that’s shrouded in a dark canopy full of twinkling lights, meant to emulate the swirling stars of the Milky Way galaxy, and space out at mirrored balls as you sink into one of the many plush beanbags littered across the floor; all this while listening to Bowie’s Starman on headphones. That audio-visual sensation is then accompanied by a curated series of looks that’s part glam rock, with metallic finishes and bold shoulders, meets star-spangled inspiration, in the form of a red, white and blue colour palette that echoes the American flag.

Royal Heritage
royal-heritage
Clockwise from top left: Ruched Floral Print Blouse, $69.90 ; Rural Romance Shirtdress, $106 ; Ruffle Mini Dress, $116 ; Young Heritage Mensy, $89.90 ; Moto Floral A-Line Skirt, $79.90 ; Grande Mary Jane Court Shoes, $116 ; Gingham Crossbody Bag, $59.90
For Royal Heritage, don’t expect any mild manners — they’re out to affront with some pure sensory overload, in the form of floor-to-ceiling patterns based on the florals and tweed from the new collection. We already love how the themed looks incorporate embroidery and whimsical vintage florals in more edgy styles, so we’d expect the room to do the same too. Prince of Wales checks and patterns will be scaled up to create new optical illusions, and as if they read our minds, there’ll also be a GIF booth in the room. Yep, you now have the resources to creatively capture all that chaos in moving GIF glory, the challenge is really how to make it worthy enough for your Instagram feed.

Youth Clash
topman youth
Clockwise from top left:Black & White Check Overshirt, $89.90 ; Slim Fit Ritual White Tee, $39.90 ; Mesh Trucker Black Cap, $26.90 ; Maroon Panel Joggers, POA ; Black Crossbody Bag, $39.90 ; Mid Blue Wash Tapered Jeans, $89.90 ; Green Longewave Long Sleeve T-Shirt, POA
TOPMAN’s two rooms aren’t gonna be any less exciting too. Picture this: an actual half pipe in a room. That’s part of their ‘Youth Clash’ space that brings us silhouettes that reference both modern street culture and retro sportswear — here, we get influences from a clash between punk, skate and sports cultures, including a checked shirt-jacket combo, sweaters and joggers, as well as a nylon crossbody bag with heavy-duty zippers. You’ll get to zip around the half pipe, while also exercising your creative license by scrawling graffiti onto the surrounding walls.

Checkmate
topman checkmate
Clockwise from top left: Black Faux Leather Briefcase, $79.90 ; Check Harrington Jacket, $116 ; Navy Stretch Skinny Chinos, $79.90 ; Navy Grey Gingham Shirt, POA ; Grey Parker Cuff Boots, $116 ; Grey Check Smart Trousers, POA
Finally, we head straight for the charming, more subdued style of the ‘Checkmate’ collection, a particularly dapper style that should agree with most men out there, though of course there’s a twist. This sees contemporary unstructured tailoring, so things aren’t as stiff as they should be, with smart check patterns on even casual styles. We don’t know about you, but part of the appeal of seeing actual clothes in front of you is being able to touch and feel, and smell, everything — here, you’ll get to live that whole tactile experience, though you’ll have to make your way down to find out exactly how.

All the new Autumn/Winter looks featured in the exhibition will be available for purchase on the spot, on ZALORA.SG via iPads located at the site, before entering the TOPSHOP and TOPMAN cafe (yes, there’s one!). And remember to use our exclusive discount code, by the way. The exclusive launch will also be stocked at TOPSHOP and TOPMAN outlets at ION Orchard and Bugis Junction.
Excited already? Here are all the deets you need to save now:

Reebok and Vetements Drop Filthy-Looking Shoes That Cost Almost as Much as the Iphone X

Ah, consumerism – society’s bad habit, fed by a mindless market all too easily swayed by branding.
Stick a “hype” logo on tissue paper, price it over at $100, and people would still buy it. Just like these new distressed leather low-top trainers by Vetements and Reebok. They look old and dirty but they cost almost as much as the latest iPhone. How much? Well, these worn-out looking kicks are priced to the tune of $1,125.

1163319_5

1163319_4

The iPhone X, which was recently unveiled on Wednesday (September 13), costs $1,648. Of course, the major difference is that one is a futuristic, mini computer that packs all the latest gadgetry in the world, like facial recognition and wireless charging. And, well…the other is just shoes.
But don’t get us wrong though. We’d still spend plenty of dough on what we wear. That’s real important. They just have to look good, that’s all we’re asking. Reebok and Vetements, marketing these shoes under fancy terms like “distressed” and “pre-love” ain’t going to hide the fact that they look like they belong in a trash can.
1163319_3_large
A bad joke? Unfortunately not.

At the very least, we know the material used to make these trainers isn’t scrimped on – the midsole is made out of leather, while the logo-debossed front would be pretty sweet, if it didn’t look like it was smeared with grime.
Anyway, for whatever reason you’d like to cop these kicks, they’re currently available via www.matchesfashion.com for the price of $1,125.

Polaroid’s OneStep 2 is a Gorgeous Analog Camera for the Modern Era

Instant camera fans rejoice! Polaroid is back in business. Well, sort of. After failing to survive the onslaught of digital photography and selfies, Polaroid went bust back in 2008, although a startup called the Impossible Project has bailed the company out of its financial woes, and now, there’s a new camera to show for it.

polaroid_onestep2(1)

Introducing the OneStep 2, a revamped version of Polaroid classic 1977 OneStep camera, and a beautiful instant analog camera that’s pretty much an anomaly in this great Instagram age we live in.
Launched under the brand name of Polaroid Originals (which was recently acquired by the Impossible Project from the original Polaroid corporation), the camera is magnificently simple. It’s a point-and-shoot analog cam that has nothing more than a built-in flash, self-timer, exposure switch, and shutter release.
polaroid_onestep2(2)

polaroid_onestep2(3)

But what makes this camera truly remarkable is that it shuns everything digital, unlike Fujifilm’s Instax SQ10 – a hybrid instant/digital cam. That’s right. There’s no such thing as smartphone connectivity here, which means you’ve got to make every shot count, and like traditional analog devices, photos will end up as film prints.
itypefilmshot

itypefilmshot1

That brings us to Polaroid’s other new debut product: a new type of film called the i-Type. The new film “features the distinct, dreamy aesthetic of analog instant photography”, according to the company. But while that remains to be seen, we know for sure that the new film develops a lot faster than older batches.
US$99.99 – that’s the amount of cash you have to cough up if you’re interested in snagging the OneStep 2, which is relatively reasonable if you ask us. That said; the real cost of owning a film camera is from buying film, and the new I-type film costs US$16 for an eight-shot pack. The OneStep 2 comes in black and white. Pre-order yours here.

Glossier Is Giving Your Body Routine A Major Moisture Boost

Glossier sure knows how to market a new launch. Every fresh product drop stirs up a major frenzy and it just leaves us begging for more, and their latest is no exception. The cult-fave brand has taken on skincare, makeup, and a scented candle thus far, but now they’re branching out to body care.

Body Hero—glowy dewy skin for the rest of you. Upgrade your shower at Glossier.com

A post shared by Glossier (@glossier) on

The body care duo, known as Body Hero, features two pretty millennial-pink tubes: the Daily Oil Wash and the Daily Perfecting Cream. Inspired by the skincare routines for our faces, oil cleansers and potent creams in particular, Glossier has created the Daily Oil Wash, which is an oil-based cleanser that’s formulated with a ton of nourishing ingredients such as coconut, olive, sesame, and meadowfoam oils to hydrate and protect your skin’s moisture barrier. It also bears a neroli and orange blossom scent that probably smells like that amazing Diptyque Hourglass Diffuser.
As moisturising as the Daily Oil Wash sound, the Daily Perfecting Cream seems great for intense hydration too – perfect for tackling those tenacious rough patches. This thick, creamy lotion contains cactus flower, prickly pear, and yucca extracts to impart some serious moisture to your skin. There’s also tamarind fruit in the mix, which is actually packed with naturally-occurring AHAs to slough off dead skin, making way for healthier cells.

While we’re currently dying to get our hands on these, we’re also LIVING for these amazing campaign images. The brand has paired this surprise with an incredible array of photos that feature stripped-down women of various skin tones and body types. Needless to say, we’re absolutely thrilled about the diversity shown here. Beauty brands, take heed.
