The 8th Taobao Maker Festival Is The E-Marketplace’s Largest-Ever Showcase Of Innovative New Products

Welcome to the future. Stepping into this year’s Taobao Maker Festival feels a lot like that as Alibaba is intent on showcasing the most creative and innovative pursuits from young Chinese entrepreneurs and start-ups, whether it’s 3D-printed food, sustainable clothing and homeware, or next-level electronics.

The 8th edition of the event took place between 29 April and 1 May over 10 bustling cities all over China with the theme of “Uncovering Infinite Lifestyle Possibilities on Taobao” — which makes this its largest showing yet in terms of participating cities and audience reach. Open to the public free of charge for the first time, the festival was also a key milestone for Taobao as the platform will be celebrating their 20th anniversary this May.

What The Taobao Maker Festival Is About — And Why It’s So Important For Young Creatives

If you’re wondering why the Chinese online shopping platform is dedicating so much resources to this event, know that it’s done in support of young, creative talent. Introduced in 2016, the Taobao Maker Festival started out as a showcase of the ingenuity of merchants on its platform, and over the years, has evolved into a yearly celebration of Taobao’s most innovative merchants and products.

The on-site festivities give entrepreneurs a platform to showcase their novel wares, which both supports their pursuits and celebrates the spirit of innovation. At the same time, audiences get a glimpse at new technology and products relevant to our lifestyles. These range across a broad variety of interests, such as eco-friendly and sustainable items; handmade ones from local artisans; new tech devices; or trendy art, clothing and pet products that appeal to millennial and Gen Z customers.

Increasingly, the emergence of modern hanfu, or jewellery that lean into traditional techniques, speak of how these young creators are keen on paying homage to Chinese cultural traditions and modernising them for our new era. There’s also been a trend of items that appeal to our modern lifestyles, whether it’s candle art paintings that help alleviate stress, or 3D-printed food so health-conscious individuals are offered high protein, low carbohydrate and precise nutrition.

This year’s festival was held in 10 cities across China, including three uniquely-themed venues in Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Chongqing, which were made even more engaging with livestreaming in order to cater to online audiences.

A Look At 4 Of This Year’s Most Innovative Creations

With much talk about the sustainability- and tech-forward products, here’s a look at 4 innovative merchants at this year’s Taobao Maker Festival that introduced fun new concepts for us to be inspired.

1. 马鹿 MULU – Magnetic Decorations for the Home

Creative home brand MULU is a purveyor in beautiful design — which makes sense as the brand was established in 2016 by a group of designers who graduated from China Academy of Art; they’ve also garnered the prestigious first prize in the China Design Intelligence Awards. The brand concept of “time is part of the scenery” translates across sand art and hourglass decorative piecers that are a fresh take on conventional designs, while allowing us to spruce up our homes with these tranquil objects.

According to Mingqiang Li, co-founder of MULU, Taobao is “the friendliest entrepreneurial platform for design studios with no sales experience or resources”, an experience he observed since their launch on the platform in 2017. During this year’s Taobao Maker Festival, MULU also had a chance to showcase its new magnetic fluid pickup speaker, which sports a visually captivating design.

2. 星墨 Starry Ink — Eco-Friendly Cold Brew Calligraphy Ink

You’ve tried cold brew coffee, but what about cold brew ink? Founder of Starry Ink, Harvey Yu excels in both chemistry and calligraphy art, which puts him in a unique position to combine his interests and expertise into a brand that appeals to calligraphy enthusiasts who love lettering and art. Fun fact: Starry Ink was founded in his university’s chemical laboratory at the age of 18!

This year’s innovation sees an environmentally-friendly new product made using cold brew methods, which delivers just as well on colour and effectiveness. With the mission to re-introduce young consumers to authentic writing experiences in an increasingly paperless world, the brand has also launched a project to create over 1,000 colour-changing and multi-colour inks, each with a unique story behind them.

3. 94oC — Candle Art Therapy

With the popularity and, perhaps, necessity of mindfulness and stress relief in our urban lives, 94oC founders and young artists Hamlein Wang and Fuqing Liu, have given millennials and Gen Z audiences a new means of addressing their emotional needs — via crafting, music, and candle art. Established in 2019, the brand operates a Taobao store as its official online sales channel.

Candle art is a wonderfully aesthetic and unconventional version of art therapy, which encourages us to participate in wax art creation and immerse ourselves in the flowing lines and colours of melted wax, almost as if your worries are similarly melting away. Each kit comes with sparkly decorations, stickers, a poster, and a frame for you to display your complete artwork, as well as access to meditative music to guide you in your process.

4. 轲人羊毛毡 Kreator — Handcrafted Wool Felt Accessories

Rug tufting and punch needle art have been rising in popularity for quite a while now, though Kreator takes it to a whole new level. The design studio is helmed by Ke Zheng, an art college graduate who was inspired by artisans to delve into handmade wool felt craft, which itself has nearly 8,000 years of history. She furthers this craft with original designs that are both cute and creative, while also highly innovative as they require her to constantly explore new materials and knitting techniques.

Some of their most popular new products include a naturalistic fresh moss wool felt handbag, one that incorporates a preservation technique that makes the moss seem like its growing from the soil. A strawberry bag, seen above, is a faithful adaptation of the fruit, in an organic shape that even recreates a loose tendril hanging off its side. Through her wool felt designs, Zheng hopes to explore the relationships between people and the world and those among people, and attract consumers who value individuality and uniqueness.

The Best Health & Beauty Products Featured In This Year’s Guardian Awards — Including Skincare, Cosmetics, Hair Care, & More!

As Singapore’s top health and beauty retailer, Guardian is a household name that’s often the first place we think of when shopping for drugstore beauty brands. After all, they’ve got over 116 stores islandwide, and a whole host of health and beauty products under their belt — over 9,000 in fact — ranging across the categories of skincare, cosmetics, personal care, health and wellness. It’s safe to say that they’ve ventured beyond their pharmacy roots, and have evolved into a one-stop shop for health and beauty.

THE GUARDIAN AWARDS 2023

Every year, Guardian is also host to their own Guardian Awards — and here’s where it gets interesting. The sheer range of products and brands they carry might feel overwhelming to the regular customer, so we consider it tremendously helpful that the retailer has curated and put together some of their award-winning and much raved-about items for us to check out.

This one’s a comprehensive list of budget beauty favourites, such as volumising and lengthening mascaras that don’t go beyond $30; skincare and body care products for sensitive skin, brightening benefits, or otherwise; and even perennial-favourite shampoos, eye drops, and supplements that care for your health and beauty from the inside out.

Just for this season, Guardian will also be running an exclusive ‘3 for 2 Mix & Match‘ promotion where you can enjoy 3 items at the price of just 2. Ahead, we’ve rounded up some of the Guardian award winners, along with our personal picks of our favourite or the most deserving items from each category. Consider this an insider’s scoop!

COSMETICS
NYLON Editor’s Pick — deJavu Fiberwig Ultra Long Mascara

  • Best Mascara (Lengthening) — deJavu Fiberwig Ultra Long Mascara, $21.80

There are plenty of cult-favourite mascaras with rave reviews all over social media, but for the ones most suitable for Asian eyes, we’ll have to default to Japanese beauty brand deJavu. In particular, the Fiberwig Ultra Long Mascara. The curved, densely-bristled brush is ideal for catching our shorter lashes, and coats each lash with a lash-extending formula that’s packed with fibres to mimic natural lashes. It’s also fuss-free and repels sebum, perspiration, tears and rubbing in order to avoid ‘panda eyes’.

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Mascara (Volume) — Maybelline Sky High Mascara, $25.50
  • Best Eyeshadow — Esprique Select Eye Color in BE309, $15.00
  • Most Innovative Nail Art — Ohora N Afterglow, $22.10
  • Best Newcomer — Cezanne

MASS SKINCARE
NYLON Editor’s Pick — Cetaphil Bright Healthy Radiance Toner

  • Best Facial Toner (Brightening) — Cetaphil Bright Healthy Radiance Toner, $23.90

Drugstore-friendly mass brands such as Senka, Hada Labo and OLAY are often only found at beauty retailers such as Guardian, so this one’s definitely an important category — plus, who can resist affordable skincare that works? Our top pick has to be Cetaphil, particularly the toner from their Bright Healthy Radiance range. Made to instantly illuminate the complexion, everyday use will fade dullness and spots to give us soft, smooth and radiant skin. As with most Cetaphil products, this one’s hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and clinically proven to respect sensitive skin!

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Cleanser (Regular) — Senka Perfect Whip Facial Cleanser, $7.95
  • Best Cleanser (Acne-Prone Skin) — Oxy Ultimate Cool Acne Cleanser, $6.90
  • Best Toner (Hydrating) — Hada Labo Super HA Lotion, $24.90
  • Best Night Cream — OLAY Regenerist Retinol24 Night Moisturiser, $55.40

DERMA SKINCARE
NYLON Editor’s Pick — La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Fluid SPF50+ PA++++

  • Best Suncare — La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ PA++++, $51.90

Sensitive or sensitised skin can often be complicated to deal with, though we’d trust these dermatologist-approved skincare brands to come through; these products are often tested on reactive and intolerant skin to make sure they don’t cause unwanted flare-ups. As for La Roche-Posay, their Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid is our perennial sunscreen of choice, for both its reliable broad UVA/UVB and IR-A protection, along with its ultra-light texture that disappears into the skin. Bonus: it doesn’t leave a white cast on those with darker skin tones too.

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Dark Spot Serum (Newcomer) — Vichy Liftactiv B3 Anti-Dark Spots Serum, $83
  • Best Brightening Serum (Newcomer) — Evans Dermalogical 15% Vitamin C Serum with 2% Ferulic Acid & Resveratrol, $100.85
  • Best Brightening Serum (Bestseller) — Eucerin Spotless Brightening Booster Serum, $76.70
  • Best Thermal Water — Avene Thermal Spring Water Spray, $30.20 for a pack of 2

HAND & BODY
NYLON Editor’s Pick — Suu Balm Itch Relieving Moisturising Cream

  • Best Body Moisturiser (Itch-Relieving) — Suu Balm Itch Relieving Moisturising Cream, $52.50

Aveeno and Cetaphil are practically household names when it comes to body lotions, though we have just as much love for homegrown brand, Suu Balm. Founder Dr. Tey Hong Liang had been working at the National Skin Centre in Singapore when he realised that existing creams were not as fast in relieving itchy skin. Their hero moisturising cream is therefore designed to both provide rapid itch relief and help increase the frequency of moisturising, thanks to ceramides, menthol, and its lightweight formula.

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Moisturising Lotion (Sensitive Skin) — Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion, $29.15
  • Best Moisturising Lotion (Eczema-Prone Skin) — Cetaphil PRO AD Derma Skin Restoring Moisturizer, $50.40
  • Best Moisturising Cream (Sensitive Skin) — Ego QV Cream, $70.15 (1kg)
  • Best Moisturising Cream (Eczema-Prone Skin) — Ceradan Skin Barrier Repair Cream, $50.40

HAIR CARE
NYLON Editor’s Pick — L’Oreal Paris Elseve Extraordinary Oil Gold

  • Best Hair Oil — L’Oreal Paris Elseve Extraordinary Oil Gold, $29.90

Dry hair and hair loss seem to be Singaporean’s top concerns when it comes to hair care and health, and thankfully, Guardian has a wealth of products, even highly-specialised ones, that cater to these; some of the best are listed below. Our pick is the all-rounder, award-winning Elseve Extraordinary Oil from L’Oreal Paris though! It’s loaded with six precious flower oils to nourish hair and transform it till its sleek, smooth and shiny. Importantly, the hair oil is lightweight and non-greasy, which makes it easy to wear any time of the day.

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Caffeine Shampoo — Kundal Scalp Care+ Caffeine Shampoo Cherry Blossom, $17.20
  • Best Hair Loss Treatment Shampoo — Trichoderm Women Treatment Shampoo, $27.15
  • Best Hair Loss Scalp Lotion — Growell 5% Scalp Lotion, $168.45
  • Best in Shaving (Men) — GilletteLabs with Exfoliating Bar Razor, $40.25

ORAL CARE
NYLON Editor’s Pick — Colgate Optic White O2 Toothpaste

  • Best Whitening Toothpaste — Colgate Optic White O2 Toothpaste, $12.10

Good oral hygiene is often underrated — and it shouldn’t be! You could level up your twice-a-day routine with an electric toothbrush and mouthwash, or spring for a whitening toothpaste that does all the work for you. Colgate’s Optic White O2 contains a unique Active Oxygen Bubble technology, of active oxygen bubbles that multiply when in contact with water. This then creates an ultra fine foam that gets absorbed into the teeth enamel, which gently whitens teeth from the inside out. Like we said, this one’s truly doing all the work for us!

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Powered Toothbrush — Oral-B Vitality D12 X/Act, $59.55
  • Best Deep Clean Toothbrush — Systema Sonic Toothbrush, $20.10
  • Best Sensitivity Toothpaste — Sensodyne Sensitive Complete Protection Fresh Breath Toothpaste, $9.60
  • Best Mouth Freshener — Listerine Mouthwash Cool Mint, $10.40

BATH
NYLON Editor’s Pick — Neutrogena Rainbath Refreshing Shower and Bath Gel

  • Best Indulgent Body Wash — Neutrogena Rainbath Refreshing Shower and Bath Gel, $27.15

From nourishing to sensitive-skin formulas, and even antibacterial ones, there are all kinds of body washes available at Guardian. It’s hard to beat the sheer indulgence of Neutrogena’s Rainbath though, which not only cleans and conditions the skin, but also contains a fragrant blend of spices, fruits and herbs that refreshes the sense, making you feel like you just walked out of a spa.

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Nourishing Body Wash — Dove Beauty Nourishing Body Wash, $9.85
  • Best Refreshing Body Wash — Kundal Honey & Macademia Body Wash, $12.70
  • Best Antibacterial Body Wash — Dettol Body Wash Cool, $11.20
  • Best Sensitive Skin Body Wash — Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, $79.60 (3 x 1L)

HEALTH
NYLON Editor’s Pick — Redoxon Triple Action Vitamin C, D & Zinc Immunity Orange Effervescent Tablets

  • Best Vitamin C Tablets — Redoxon Triple Action Vitamin C, D & Zinc Immunity Orange Effervescent Tablets, $64.90 (2 x 45s + 15s)

With its pharmaceutical roots, you bet Guardian will have loads of options when it comes to top-of-the-line health and beauty supplements, whether it’s probiotics for gut health, or 100% natural, Omega-3-rich fish oil tablets. We do rely on them for a steady supply of Vitamin C supplements though, and reach for Redoxon every time. The brand’s Triple Action effervescent tablets contain a trio of Vitamin C, D and Zinc to boost overall immunity, which should keep flu bugs at bay.

Worthy Mentions —

  • Best Women’s Health Supplements — Greenlife Probio Women 18B 30S, $44.40

Calvin Klein Collaborates With JENNIE For A Limited-Edition Capsule Collection

“This is JENNIE’s world”, says Calvin Klein, in reference to their latest and highly-exciting limited-edition capsule collection designed in collaboration with the k-pop star. As artist, brand ambassador and international icon, BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim is already the typa girl who can make Calvin Klein‘s relaxed styles look utterly effortless — now, she can add ‘designer’ to her ever-expanding list of talents.

What we’re then getting is Calvin Klein through the eyes of our It-girl, as the series of casual essentials takes cues from her personal wardrobe; silhouettes are kept minimalist yet stylish, in relaxed fits that bear a dreamy pastel colour palette curated by the k-pop idol herself. The ‘Jennie for Calvin Klein’ collection includes a selection of underwear sets, denim, tees, fleece and knits, which even sport personalised touches such as the iconic Calvin Klein logo in JENNIE’s handwriting.

“Collaborating with Calvin Klein on this capsule has been an exciting progression in our partnership,” said JENNIE. “This collection reflects my everyday style and is based on many of the Calvin Klein essentials that have become staples in my wardrobe.”

“I wanted to bring a personal touch to these pieces, which you’ll see reflected in the fit, the colour palette and the details. My aspiration for this collection is that everyone will feel as happy and confident in these pieces as I do.”

The key colours of the collection are refreshing and in-the-moment shades of Lilac, Chalk Blue and Desert, along with classic black and white of course, seen across both innerwear and casual wear.

Matching bralettes and bottoms, bodysuits and soft rib tanks are made to feel comfortable against the skin while softly hugging one’s natural curves, while joggers, tees, dresses, and crewneck sweatshirts offer that same soft touch and ease of movement.

Other more dressy apparel within the collection include a denim shirt and 90s-style jeans, as well as a knit top, dress and a sculpting denim bralette and skirt set for those who’d love to channel some of JENNIE’s “let me hear you f*king scream” sass, seen at BLACKPINK’s recent #Pinkchella performance.

The Jennie for Calvin Klein collection will be available on calvinklein.com.sg on 10 May, 9pm, and at Calvin Klein Paragon and ION Orchard stores from 11 May 2023.

Happening This May: AVENUE Singapore’s 4th Anniversary Event and World-Class DJ Sets At MARQUEE Singapore

Consider this a PSA for all partygoers — get ready to rave as MARQUEE Singapore and AVENUE Singapore are set to spice up the entertainment calendar, with world-class guest DJs at the nightlife destination, and a 4th anniversary celebration that sees Justin Bieber’s official DJ, DJ Tay James, headlining the event at the latter nightspot. Ahead, a look at the acts and parties you can expect during the month of May.

AVENUE Singapore’s 4th Anniversary Event

Most people know of TAO Group’s prominent nightclub, MARQUEE Singapore, but might have walked by the Avenue Lounge without suspecting a thing — which is kind of its appeal.

AVENUE Singapore is a bespoke hidden gem, located right at Marina Bay Sands as well, that would appeal to those looking for an intimate night out. It’s just as luxurious though, since the club is decked out in plush banquettes and an Art Deco vibe, complete with a mini bowling alley, pool table, and arcade games too.

This May, AVENUE Singapore will be celebrating its 4th anniversary with a two-day event on 18 and 19 May, which sees Justin Bieber’s official DJ, DJ Tay James, headlining the event.

DJ Tay James. Image credit: AVENUE Singapore.

With the theme AVENUE Rouge, the nightspot will be transformed into a glamorous space draped in crimson and scarlet red, while each night will be kickstarted by a burlesque performance before the main act.

DJ Tay James will then take the stage, where the Baltimore-born veteran will enthral the audience with his dance-inducing beats; he’s, of course, known for being Justin Bieber’s long-time DJ, working on both the pop star’s live shows and most notably his 2021 Justice LP. Both evenings will then see Resident DJs continue to helm the decks all night long.

For table reservations, e-mail avenue.reservations@marinabaysands.com. Table reservations are recommended as walk-ins are subject to venue capacity.

Lenskart Honours Southeast Asian Artists And Cities In Their Stylish New Cityscapes Collection

Ever at the forefront of unique and cutting-edge designs, eyewear brand Lenskart has decided to tap on the talents of Southeast Asian artists for a series of bold lenses. The Cityscapes collection takes us out of the ordinary (read: basic) and challenges us to see eyewear in different, well, lenses, with daring colours and illustrations that take heed to both street art and the rich cultural heritage of four chosen cities, particularly, Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh.

Each artist gets to tell the story of their home city via two exclusive artworks that are reworked across four limited-edition frames and two cases, with hidden details spotted across the rims, temples, and even nose pads of each design. Read on as we detail the exciting choices curated by each designer.

Singapore
— Artist: Tan Zi Xi (@messymsxi)

Singapore represent! Local artist Tan Zi Xi, aka Messymsxi, is known for her creative, spontaneous works of art, and here, she pays homage to our reputation as an urban jungle / garden city with a pair of transparent light blue and purple eyeglasses. These feature leaf-shaped prints, organic shapes, and natural textures, across both the temples and temple tips; you’ll a similar print on her eyewear case as well.

Her other design, on the other hand, is an ode to Peranakan culture, with those iconic tiles appearing on the sides of thick-rimmed glasses in black or classic brown. A second eyewear case also sees a more geometric style, which showcases her versatility and contemporary point of view.

Jakarta, Indonesia
— Artist: Muchlis Fachri (@muklay)

The next couple of designs see visual artist Muchlis Fachri’s penchant for colourful street art and edgy style. His first pair of frames are clean and minimalist, somewhat unexpected, though we can’t deny their edgy vibes thanks to the combination of acetate and metal. Muklay’s symbol of floating eyeballs are spotted on the temple tips though, and represent Jakarta’s reputation as a city that never sleeps.

Then, it’s a bright and vivid takeover with his other pair of frames, where solid glossy acetate gives way to Muklay’s quirky street art style on the inside of bold temples. His eye motif features in a comic-like collage of layered fluffy clouds, imagery that’s also repeated on one of the case designs.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
— Artist: Jaemy C (@jaemyc)

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Jaemy C is often inspired to create art across various mediums such as digital illustrations, mixed media, and even oriental brush calligraphy interpreted in a modern way. His pairs of frames, therefore, adopt the same contrast in styles. A transparent one sees insects, fellow residents of Kuala Lumpur and his childhood companions, as the main subject, with garden motifs running across the sides, temple tips, and custom nose pads.

A darker pair in black features insects on the nose pads as well, while also expressing his feelings of being an introvert living in the bustling metropolis that is Kuala Lumpur, which is conveyed via white calligraphy on the sides of the frames. This nod to traditional techniques is also done on an eyeglasses case that sees Lenskart’s branding written in Jaemy C’s calligraphy style.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
— Artist: Le Thanh Tung (@tungcrazymonkey)

Veteran artist Le Thanh Tung’s known in the creative circles as Crazy Monkey — and with a name like that, he doesn’t disappoint at all, with experimental art that spans from digital illustrations to animations, video installations and kinetic automation. His frames are therefore a blend of tradition and futurism, with the first of two frames featuring five neon clouds on the temples of the eyewear, which signify good luck in Vietnamese folklore. The colours are coded as well, where purple and pink represent the vibrant neon street signs of modern Vietnam, for instance, cyan the Saigon river, and white for the colour of the Ao Dai.

A second olive green creation sees bolder temples that make room for more meaningful art; the geometric yet surreal motifs engraved on them reference everything from the famous rice terraces of Vietnam, to traditional thread embroidery that’s seeped in history and cultural heritage. As for the imaginative illustrations across his cases, these are done in neon too, as an ode to Ho Chi Minh’s neon lights against the night sky.

Lenskart Cityscapes collection, $148 for the limited-edition frames, and $28 for the eyewear cases. Available at all Lenskart outlets and online at lenskart.sg.

Women Inspiring Women — The Home Edition by Dr Chua Yang sheds the spotlight on Mothers and Daughters in Singapore’s Healthcare

Photographs and their stories can be very powerful things, and with Mother’s Day just around the corner, Yang’s book on mothers and daughters working in healthcare together is exactly what we need to see the good around us. Yang, herself is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist working at Mount Alvernia Hospital, and she’s also one of the founding directors of Global Clinic, a non-profit organisation that brings healthcare to under-served communities around the world. Through her medical profession and love for photography (she’s a Leica M user!), her book makes perfect sense; Yang has meticulously taken and curated photographs of mothers and daughters in healthcare, and shares their heart-warming stories to celebrate these women and their families.

Yang has gifted this book to SMA Charity Fund to support medical students with financial needs. It’s a great cause to support, and if you’d like to be part of this, you can donate (and get a book) here: smacf.org.sg/donate-now.

In the meantime, here are some highlights shared by Yang, from her book.

Above: Dr Yasmin Alsagoff and Dr Sharifah Zainah Alsagoff

“Growing up, there was a lack of role models in the form of healthcare professionals in the Arab community, so Ophthalmologist, Dr Sharifah Zainah Alsagoff was really surprised when she got admitted to Medical School. She wanted to be a trailblazer to inspire others within her community to prioritise education and strive towards their own successes. Her daughter, Dr Yasmin Alsagoff, certainly benefitted from having her as a wonderful role model! She has just graduated from Medical School and Sharifah is incredibly proud of her.”

Above: Dr Razia Attaree and Dr Nausheen Edwin Doctor

“Dr Razia Attaree was the first Indian Muslim woman doctor to graduate from the Medical Faculty, University of Singapore in 1969. She retired while she was Head of the National Health Group Polyclinic. Her daughter, Dr Nausheen Edwin Doctor (Razia married someone whose surname is Doctor!) is now an Emergency Physician and shares the same joy and passion for what she does!”

Above: Dr Alyana Aysha Binte Sallim and Dr Balkis Binte Akbar Ali

“Family Physician Dr Balkis Binte Akbar Ali grew up in a big, multigenerational family and her grandfather encouraged all his grandchildren to be healthcare professionals because he believed that would be a great way to do good. She may have passed down the family wisdom as both her children Adnaan and Alyana have also become doctors. Dr Alyana Aysha Binte Sallim is now a Medical Officer.”

Above: Dr Marcia Ng Poh Leng and Dr Rachel Pang

“Dr Marcia Ng Poh Leng grew up in a family of healthcare providers. Her maternal grandfather was a well-loved Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner. Her three aunties are retired nurses and her younger sister is a doctor. She was drawn from young to this ministry of care, love and hope. She is now a Dental Surgeon who also volunteers at the Assisi Hospice and Mount Alvernia Outreach Dental Clinic, and assists in Palliative care with home visits. Marcia’s daughter, Dr Rachel Pang was accepted to both Medicine and Dentistry. It was then that she felt a calling that prompted her to give up her childhood dream to be a pediatrician and take a leap of faith to study Dentistry. She and her younger brother, Dr Ian Pang, another dentist in the family, now both work with their parents.”

The Saint Laurent Le37 Bucket Bag is a classy and practical tote that you’ll use forever

Anthony Vaccarello has been doing something right. For the past year, almost every new Saint Laurent bag design he released has been an instant classic. There’s the Solferino (approx. $4,167) shoulder bag in the gorgeous cream leather with black trim, the minimalistic Manhattan ($3,560) that screams quiet luxury (yes, it’s an oxymoron), the Joe backpack (approx. $3,766) in an incredible dark green shade, the super chic Gaby quilted leather bag that can be dressed up or down, the June (approx. $2,985) boxy style that gives off vintage camera bag feels, and if you really want to go retro and grandma-style, there’s the Le Monogramme Cœur velvet and suede shoulder bag (approx. $1,856).

The newest design to join our list of must-haves, is the Le37 bucket bag that’s released for Summer 23, and comes in a semi-rigid cylindrical construction with YSL’s iconic Cassandre signature closure using the “L” as a clap. There’s a convenient top-handle, and the all-necessary leather shoulder strap that can be adjusted in length, or even detached if you just want to carry this as a handheld tote. Inside, there’s a zippered fly pocket with the “SAINT LAURENT PARIS” signature stamped in gold foil and an internal lining in black suede.

You can find the new le37 bucket bag in Saint Laurent stores in Singapore, and online at the brand’s official website at ysl.com priced at $4,240.

Kipling x Minju Kim Is All About Whimsical Prints On Everyday Bags And Accessories

Expect whimsical prints and bunny cut-outs across Kipling’s latest playful collection, dreamt up by none other than South Korean fashion designer Minju Kim. The bubbly designer first enthralled us on the first season of Next In Fashion, and has been making waves in the industry since then for her imaginative point of view.

This Kipling x Minju Kim collaboration marks her first bag co-creation, and despite what the fairytale flair and bold colours are telling us otherwise, these bags and accessories are also inspired by the dark fantasy Tim Burton film, Edward Scissorhands.

Danjung Belt Minju Multi Prt, $145.

“When people think of Scissorhands, they think darkness and sadness, but I think differently. The scene where Edward went to school, played with the paper and made a garland inspired me to make my own. The print displayed on the bags is cut from paper like Edward, which I then transformed into a print,” says Minju when asked about her unique take. The print had also appeared across voluminous dresses and tops in her Fall-Winter 2021 collection.

Art M Minju Multi Prt, $249.

This current Kipling collection sees the bold bi-coloured garland design across backpacks, crossbody bags, tote bags, and even a bright blue luggage with more of the contrasting printed pattern on the fabric liner of the hard shell case. We’re also getting Kipling’s signature Art M in a red-and-white print, complete with a bunny keyring that’s consistent across the rest of the collection.

Three new silhouettes are introduced as well, starting with the Dajung belt bag, a youthful design that puts together three small pouches linked by a pink belt, ideal for your phone, earphones, and other small accessories. The familiar Delia Kim backpack has a new oval front pocket, while there’s the everything-in Jihoon tote bag, entirely designed by Minju, with a shorter top handle, front pocket, and fun drawstring closure.

The Kipling x Minju Kim collection is available at Kipling boutiques and their concierge shopping service on WhatsApp (8928 0706), Lazada Kipling Official Store, as well as selected department stores.

What To Expect At The Coach Play Singapore Shophouse — And The World’s First Coach Cafe

Attention: this is not a drill. All-American fashion brand Coach has recently unveiled their latest store concept in Singapore, the Coach Play Singapore Shophouse — and this one’s not a pop-up either.

What it is though is an immersive and unique concept store that brings together the house’s distinct New York spirit with plenty of local flavour, particularly the nostalgic vibes of its surrounding neighbourhood at Keong Saik Road. The first-in-Asia location marks their largest global concept store to date, while the space is also home to the first-ever Coach Café.

The Coach Shophouse Takeover

As you can see, Coach has taken over an entire shophouse, with a striking pink and orange colour scheme on its facade in order to signal their bold intention.

Inside, you’ll find the same unified feel, part quirky and charming, yet expressive of the brand’s contemporary luxury aesthetics. The space is divided into six rooms, each with its own unique theme that encourages play and discovery while paying homage to the house’s rich heritage and craftsmanship.

[click on the images below to expand.]

On the first floor, the Coach Lounge is dedicated to iconic Coach leathergoods, such as the popular Tabby bag in all its various shapes, forms, and colours.

Go up the stairs and turn a corner to discover the Vintage Room, which features archival and vintage designs, lovely patina included, which allows us to appreciate the journey of the brand and purchase a couple of sweet gems for ourselves too; a customisation booth is also available should you wish to add on embroidery patches or coloured versions of Coach’s iconic hangtags.

Inspired by the New York City subway, there’s also the Coach Station room, buzzing with new-in pieces and a seasonal selection of Coach ready-to-wear apparel and accessories. There’s also a (not-so-)secret room on the third floor called Coach World, a digital art experience that tells the story of the house’s heritage of craft.

Coach Café

[click on the images below to expand.]

Foodies ought to flock over to the world’s first Coach Café as well, where the fresh and vibrant takeover lets us enjoy artisanal coffee and, as expected, classic American eats and desserts inspired by New York City. Done in collaboration with local cafe Brawn & Brains, every menu item has been carefully considered, both taste-wise and in terms of channeling the aesthetics of the brand.

You can try the sweet-savoury delight of Chicken & Waffles, for instance, which sees Coach icon Rexy as the cutest slice of butter. Classic Pancakes take on a bit of local charm, thanks to the addition of homemade kaya alongside maple syrup and a mixed berries jam.

The dessert bar menu further pays tribute to all things Coach, with The Hangtag Surprise literally taking after the shape of the leather tab we usually see on their bags, more depictions of Rexy the dinosaur in various forms, and Coach’s signature ‘C’ via chocolate pieces that accompany the Coach Hot Chocolate.

The Coach Play Singapore Shophouse is located at 5 Keong Saik Road, Singapore. More information at singapore.coach.com/coach-play-singapore-shophouse.

Using Interior Blinds by Ziptrak® to build spaces within the home

I’ve never really thought about the curtains and blinds in my home; they’ve always just… been there. They serve their purpose, and once in a while I clean them. And then the pandemic hit and the NYLON team moved to WFH, and around the same time, I moved as well to a resale property in its original condition. This gave me the opportunity to really plan out the spaces in my home that I’ll need for work — with the most important being a photography studio for my shoots. Lighting was my key consideration when planning all the rooms, plus since I get to start over, I want my fixtures to be neat and discreet. This brought me back to the necessity of curtains and blinds, and in my search, I got to know about Ziptrak® Interior.

Ziptrak® has been available in Singapore for years, and it’s the original Australian track-guided blind that can transform a space, making it more functional than what it was originally intended for. For example, the brand’s flagship outdoor blinds can change the function of a balcony; making it more than a traditional outdoor space by sheltering it from sun and rain, and offering privacy from neighbours. This means you can use that balcony space as an extended living area. And with property prices on the rise, smaller apartments will truly benefit from this added useful space. Imagine the possibilities!

The interior version is not as widely adopted yet, mainly because it was only launched last year; but upon discovering what Ziptrak® Interior blinds can do, I found solutions to problems I didn’t even know existed.

Above: For Ziptrak® interior blinds, There are tons of fabrics and shades to choose from — far more than the options for exterior blinds.

Above: more swatches for Ziptrak® interior blinds.

It starts with a visit and consultation by an expert from one of Ziptrak’s authorised retailers in Singapore, where measurements are taken and recommendations for fabrics are made based on living habits and the purpose of each room where the blind is going to be.

Above: I chose a black frame for everything, so it matches perfectly with the black and white aesthetic of the entire home. There are silver, white and powder-coated wood grain frames to choose from as well. If you want something even fancier, there are stone and leather finishes too.

Above: Choosing swatches against the windows.

Here’s how I partitioned the house using Ziptrak® Interior:

WORK / STUDIO

Above: Measuring the windows at my wfh space.

The work / studio space I have is east-facing, which means I get the morning sun glaring directly onto my computer screen. This problem is easily solved with curtains or pretty much any kind of blinds, but Ziptrak® Interior really takes it up a notch and blocks out the sun entirely from the room, so there’s no light leakage even from the sides because the blinds run along a sealed track.

This is also made possible because I chose a blackout fabric — this doesn’t let in any light at all. This is perfect for me as a photographer, so I can execute studio shoots with studio lights in the morning or afternoon, without worrying about sunlight leaking in to the room. I can imagine a black-out fabric would work well for gamers too, who need to block out light reflections from their monitors.

Above: INstalling the Ziptrak® interior blinds at my workspace.

Above: the single piece of fabric is sleek, while the black frame works with the black and white aesthetic of the home.

Above: i can control how much natural sunlight comes into the room. This is great for shoots any time of the day.

Every blind installed comes with its own remote control, which has buttons to bring the blinds up or down, and can be programmed to stop at specified heights. There’s also a manual option if you prefer not to have motorised blinds; this works better for shorter windows where the bottom bar can be easily reached and operated. There are no cords or chains for Ziptrak® Interior blinds (which is safer), and so for the manual version, the blinds are moved up or down with the bottom bar.

Above: The Ziptrak® interior remote control mounted on the wall next to the window.

Above: The Ziptrak® interior blinds in my wfh space. The black-out fabric keeps the sunlight out and the glare away from my computer monitors.

BEDROOMS

Black-out fabrics work ideally in the bedrooms as well, so even if the sun rises, you don’t have to. It’s a sound sleep especially for those who need it really dark to relax, and for anyone planning a nursery. You could argue that night curtains work the same — and yes, they do — but I’ve never been a fan of thick, heavy curtains that sweep the floor; they get extremely dusty and aren’t as sleek as a simple flat blind that goes all the way down and simply becomes part of your wall. It’s nice and neat.

Above: taking measurements for the frame.

Above: The blinds with black-out fabric in the bedroom up and down, offering complete light control.

We planned the kids’ room to have a bay window where they could sit and read comfortably; and for this window, we — again — chose a black-out fabric, but also provided a picture to be printed on it so when the blinds are closed, it looks like a painting. You can print any image (if the resolution is high enough) on the fabric; you just need to supply it to your preferred Ziptrak® Interior retailer and they’ll customise it accordingly.

Above: this is the bay window in the kids room, before installing blinds.

Above: bringing down the custom printed blinds in the kids’ room.

WARDROBE

Above: the wardrobe with the interior blinds up and down. The black-out fabric provides complete privacy and light control.

In the wardrobe, I chose a textured fabric in a neutral shade to create a cosy nook for myself. And because these blinds can be brought up and are hidden in a roll within the frame, we could make the wardrobe wall a glass panel instead of a concrete slab; so, during the day, the blinds go up, and the space feels open, less boxed in, and really part of the house.

WALLS

My favourite use of Ziptrak® Interior is where the bedroom and study room walls are. We planned all the rooms to be on the side of the staircase and made them all glass panels instead of solid walls; and then fitted each of the four “glass walls” with Ziptrak® Interior blinds. With the convenience of bringing the blinds up or down, the rooms can become private in an instant, or part of the stairwell letting natural light in.

Above: Using Ziptrak® interior at The glass wall next to my desk provides me with light control and privacy.

The option to block out or let in as little or as much natural light as needed is incredible. When all blinds are up, the house feels beautifully open and spacious; and at night when they are all down, they become private rooms again.

Above: using Ziptrak® interior blinds against one of the glass panel walls in my wfh area. when brought down like this, the room becomes private and i can better control the lighting in my studio space.

Above: THIS IS THE LUSH RANGE OF FABRICS THAT LETS IN SOME LIGHT, but still provides enough privacy to do work.

Above: the blinds seen from the staircase during the day.

Above: the blinds seen from the staircase at night.

The experts at Ziptrak® also shared other ideas on how to use their Interior blinds within the home, and one interesting way was as a divider or “door” for a wardrobe. So rather than an open concept wardrobe, these blinds can provide a neat separation between an open wardrobe and the room it’s in, keeping dust out, and creating a neater look for the room with any mess hidden behind it. If you choose a sheer fabric, you can also get a boutique hotel feel. Here’s an example provided by Ziptrak®:

I recommend if you’re renovating your home, get a Ziptrak® retailer to check out your space and suggest ways their interior blinds can create more beauty and functionality for the space. The wardrobe system idea was novel to me, but wasn’t suitable for the way I built my current wardrobe; but it is something to keep in mind for the future.

You can see more examples on how Ziptrak® Interior blinds can be used at their website, and then contact one of their retailers for a consultation and quote.

Just announced: The Leica M11 Monochrom, for perfect black-and-white photography

Just last year, Leica launched the highly-anticipated M11 camera, which came five years after its previous version, the M10. If you want to read more about the legendary M system and the M11 model, check out this article. Yesterday, the announcement for the Leica M11 Monochrom broke on Leica’s social media and websites, and the released specs are incredible:

—Full-frame BSI CMOS sensor
—ISO 125-200,000
—60MP
—256GB internal memory
—All-metal body
—Scratch-resistant Black Paint finish

The red dot on the front of the camera is noticeably missing, which harkens back to the Leica M10-P that’s popular with collectors and those who subscribe to the notion of “quiet luxury”. I love that the M11 Monochrom is presented in the sought-after Black Paint finish that is incredibly sleek and premium; with the aesthetics perfectly matching the black-and-white pictures you’ll get out of this exceptional sensor.

Like all new Leica launches, there’s a waitlist for this incredible camera body, even at its (also incredible) retail price of $13,470. The M11 Monochrom will be available from 13 April 2023, and you can join the waitlist online here.
