Inside the Creative World of a Graphic Designer

Psychedelic warfare. That’s what it feels like looking at Sebastien Feraut’s illustrations. Big, bold colours are splashed out on a canvas cluttered with all sorts of shapes, motifs, and sometimes…body parts, like eyes or jagged teeth. But while this sounds like a hellish mishmash of gory art, the truth is quite the opposite.

tumblr_ogslnkzLup1ro9hndo1_500

In fact, the talented Paris-based graphic designer, who’s given himself the somewhat curious moniker of Niark1, is all about exploring the “crazy” side of life through his vivid drawings that are inspired by graphic fanzines, punk music posters, and pop surrealism.
Here are some highlights of his work:

Having previously worked with brands such as Converse and personalities like Pharrell Williams, Niark1 recently lent his talents to stroller company Bugaboo, which unveiled its limited edition “Monsters on the Move” collection back in April, featuring its Bee, Donkey, and Buffalo strollers emblazoned with quirky monster drawings.
Feraut’s stroller collab with Bugaboo:

bugaboo-16-12-niark1-by-rvda-00224aa

Here, we speak with Feraut to find out what makes him tick:
1. What’s daily life like for Niark1?
Well, nothing really crazy. I wake up in the morning, eat breakfast with my kid and bring him to school. Do morning things. Then check my emails and work a bit on my computer. Make some drawings and sketches. And when I’m not too much busy on projects for clients and digital work, I go to my atelier/studio in Paris to paint. Of course, I need to listen a lot of music during the day!
2. When did you realise that art was your true calling?
Actually, I didn’t really realise anything. It was something totally natural for me.
I never really asked what I was going to do later [in life]. It was already established since I was young. I don’t know what else I could have done.
3. How do you get inspiration?
I get inspiration from everywhere. Music is very inspiring to me. Otherwise, I try to see a lot of exhibitions in galleries, museums, etc… I also buy a lot of magazines and books about art and graphics.
4. Tell us about your designs for Bugaboo.
Well, the idea was to make something funny and a bit crazy. And because I like to create monsters, I made a kind of hybrid creatures that weren’t really frightening.
I’ve liked monsters since I was a kid, so it was obvious for me to make these kinds of characters for the strollers.
5. What’s next for Niark1?
A lot of projects!

You Can Now Store Your Valuables In These Doraemon-Like Shorts While You Work Out

Have you ever experienced the dilemma of whether to bring along your smartphones or some chump change with you when working out? Like, y’know, just so you can grab a drink from the convenience store after running for about… 5 minutes? Or to take a photo of your outfit gear to post on Instagram? Okay, we’re kidding. We aren’t that narcissistic to actually post a cringey workout photo of ourselves. But we ain’t kidding about needing to buy a drink from just 5 minutes of working out though. And we’re pretty sure we aren’t the only ones because we found shorts that actually let you carry your things around while working out.
Now, we’re not talking about slipping your iPhone into side pockets, which will probably drag your shorts down while you run. Nobody’s giving a strip show, okay. We’re talking about storing your stuff into a waistband that is secure enough for it to not fall off even when you walk, run, jump, or do some intense acrobatic movements and… you get it.

keeperband
Wide Waistband Shorts ll in Black (with KeeperBand), $52.90

Homegrown active lifestyle label, FUNFIT, came up with an innovative storage design coined the KeeperBand. The tubular construction of the KeeperBand allows you to store things like your earphones, cash, cards, keys, and even your medication and passport, through a hidden pocket located at the inner side of the back of the shorts.

Movement Leggings in Blaze Print, $89.90

Movement leggings in Cosmos Print, $89.90

With the shock and bounce absorber feature, you are free to do anything without having to hold your pants for fear that your valuables will fall a miserable death (a cracked iPhone screen is the last thing we ever want to deal with). The team has also rigorously tested the KeeperBand with a variety of popular smart phones, so you know your Samsungs and Apples definitely passed the test.
Made of a lightweight performance fabric, the waistband is stretchy and supportive, and allows wearers to reach out for their personal belongings easily, yet away from theft. The KeeperBand are also available on capris and leggings, so you can wear those when travelling, all with a peace of mind, knowing your valuables are literally right by your side.
FUNFIT also offers a wide range of trendy swimwear pieces from their Athleiswim line, where their athletic crops can double up as bathing tops, while their swimsuits can be worn as a bodysuit when paired with jeans, pants, or a skirt – perfect for those who are too lazy to change out of their swimwear attire or those who want to head straight out after exercising. Oh and did we mention, unlike dri-fit tops that traps sweat, FUNFIT’s activewear line are all made of a quick dry material and is “waterproof”, so you won’t feel like you’re drenched in your own sweat.

We’ll be giving 3 lucky winners a giveaway hamper, each consisting of FUNFIT’s Wide Waistband Shorts II in Black (with KeeperBand) that’s worth $52.90, a pair of Printed Movement Leggings worth $89.90, and a “A Girl Has No Name” Slogan Swimsuit worth $59.90. This Crazy Beauty App Is Like a Skincare Lie Detector

You know it. We know it. The whole damn world knows it. Skincare can get really expensive. And sometimes, it’d just be nice to look good without spending the price equivalent of an arm or leg. But for that to happen, you’d need to know which products work the best, in order to streamline your buying process and save money.
That’s where the YouCam Makeup app comes in.

youcam

The app, which uses smart facial detection to give real-time makeovers, has just released a new feature that allows you to determine if all those expensive skincare products you’ve been loading up on actually help.
Here’s how: after you upload a selfie, the app goes straight to work by highlighting areas of your face with wrinkles, spots, and dark circles. It will then proceed to calibrate “scores” or numbers that will indicate how healthy your skin is, compared to a list of other people in YouCam’s database.
youcam_makeup_app

Tracking your skin effectively is also pretty easy. All you need to do is take selfies in the same location with the same lighting, and voila, the app will have more accurate data.
Now we know, the whole idea of pointing out your flaws on a daily basis and comparing them to other people sounds demoralising. But it really isn’t, especially once you find that your skin health improves after selecting the right products. Just think of it as a sort of Fitbit, but for your skin.
Who knows, you might also just be able to save a lot of money in the long run, and be able to afford that exotic Maldives vacation you’ve wanted for the longest time. Oh, and great skin. That’d be awesome too, yeah?
Download the YouCam Makeup app on the App Store or Google Play.

Everybody’s favourite pocket monsters will be making their way to a collection of limited edition monochrome tees, with each piece sporting a cutesy, block-looking Poké print, as well as a cartoon-style motif of BAPE’s logo.
And yes, there’s no such thing as Gen two, three, or four over here. We’re back to the OG’s of the old school, with the tees featuring original characters like Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur.
Professor Oak would be proud.

It will also mark the first time BAPE has officially worked with Pokémon, and judging from all the designs, we hope that it won’t be the last time either. After all, is there any reason to stop catching em’ all?

10 Fusion Hawker Dishes to Try This National Day if You Miss the Nasi Lemak Burger

Rule number 1 of living in Singapore: you don’t mess with our food. Whether it’s Nasi Lemak, Chicken Rice, or Char Kuay Teow, our local hawker fare is amongst some of the best in the world. No arguments there.
Still, it’s nice to spice things up every once in awhile, like how McDonald’s did with the Nasi Lemak Burger (you know that when Malaysia copies us, it’s something good).
If you didn’t get to try that since it’s now sold out, here are 10 other fusion dishes that might just make you go Majulah Singapura with pride:
Po: Gourmet Popiah

po_popiah

Signature Popiah

icecream_popiah

Ice Cream Popiah

Heard of the term mod-Sin? It stands for modern Singaporean cuisine (basic, we know). Well, it’s a style of cooking that you can find at The Warehouse Hotel’s Po – a restaurant helmed by Chef Willin Low. Do check out his Signature Popiah, a reinterpretation of the classic spring roll dish, with fillings of pork, shrimp, and hand-cut jicama; or the Ice Cream Popiah, that comes with servings of pineapple, peanut, and taro gelato.
Po, The Warehouse Hotel, 320 Havelock Road, Singapore 169628. Opening Hours: Open Daily, 7am to 10.30am, 12pm to 2.30pm, 6pm to 10pm.
Ding Dong: Scallop Kui Pie Tee
scallop_kuih_pie_tee

Scallop Kuih Pie Tee

*Insert ringing bell sound* Your next version of mod-Sin food is here, courtesy of Ding Dong, a stylish restaurant known for whipping up flamboyant renditions of traditional Southeast Asian fare. Here, they serve Scallop Kuih Pie Tee. But instead of the regular Nyonya version, this dish comprises of Hokkaido scallop tartare with coconut, pickled ginger, and sea grapes wrapped in crispy bamboo shoots.
Ding Dong, #01-02, 115 Amoy Street, Singapore 069935. Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday, 12pm to 3pm, 6pm to 12am; Closed on Sunday.
Food Anatomy: Design Food
food_anatomy1

food_anatomy2

Nasi Lemak, Chicken Rice, and Bacon Potato

We bet you’d never thought Nasi Lemak or Beef Rendang could look so artsy. We didn’t too, till Food Anatomy popped onto the scene. This restaurant at Timbre+ features all sorts of local goodies, and even international ones too like Thai Pork Basil, and crams them into delightfully colourful cubes of munch-worthy goodness with the aim of combining the beauty of design and food.
Food Anatomy, #01-31, Timbre+, 73A Ayer Rajah Crescent, Singapore 139957. Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday, 11am to 11pm. Closed on Sunday.
Restaurant Labryinth: Chilli Crab
labryinth_chillicrab

“Labryinth” Chilli Crab

labryinth_orhluak

Orh Luak – Sous-vide Egg and Oyster Foam

Singaporeans are fiercely proud of their Chilli Crab. However, Restaurant Labryinth ignores everything that’s intrinsic to this dish. Instead, the restaurant’s version comes as a deep-fried soft shell crab that’s placed on a bed of crispy mantou crumbs and crab bisque foam. On the side, you’ve got spicy chilli crab ice cream. Better than the original? Nope. But definitely makes for an interesting alternative.
Restaurant Labryinth, 8 Raffles Avenue, #02-23, Singapore 039802. Opening Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 12pm to 2.30pm, 6.30pm to 11pm; Saturday and Sunday, 6pm to 11pm; Closed on Monday.
Candlenut Kitchen: Buah Keluak Ice Cream
buah_keluak_ice_cream_candlenut

Buah Keluak Ice Cream

Buah Keluak has to be one of the most polarising foods ever. You either love it or hate it. Or learn to love it. Ah, you get the point. Still, that hasn’t stopped Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant Candlenut Kitchen from using it as the main ingredient in one of its deserts. For this dish, the earthy-tasting nut comes with dark Valhrona chocolate, salted caramel, chocolate crumble, and chilli specks. Delicious.
Candlenut Kitchen, 17A Dempsey Road, Singapore 249676. Opening Hours: Sunday to Thursday, 12pm to 3pm, 6pm to 10pm; Friday and Saturday, 12pm to 3pm, 6pm to 11pm.
Lepark: Chicken Rice Sushi
lepark_chickenrice_sushi

Chicken Rice Sushi

lepark_tempura_otah_slider

Tempura Otah Slider

Lepark is based in probably one of the coolest spots in Singapore, but little do people know that they also serve up a mean variety of locally inspired dishes, chief of which is the Chicken Rice Sushi. Okay, so the dish doesn’t need any explanation thanks to its name, although there are other cool stuff to check out here, like the Tempura Otah Slider and Slipper Lobster and Crabmeat Tom Yam Pasta.
Lepark, People’s Park Complex, 1 Park Road, #06-00, Singapore 059108. Opening Hours: Tuesday to Thursday, 4pm to 11pm; Friday, 4pm to 12am; Saturday, 12pm to 12am; Sunday, 12pm to 11pm; Closed on Monday.
WANTON – Seng’s Noodle Bar: Wanton Mee
wanton_sengs

Wanton Mee

Don’t think of the Wanton Mee here as fusion. Think of it as somewhat like a spruced up version of your local coffeeshop favourite, with premium ingredients instead. Down here at WANTON, only the best ingredients are used. For instance, there are regular dumplings and char siew with springy noodles, but you can top off your dish with sides like salted egg sweet potato, batulong eggs, and aburi pork belly.
WANTON, 52 Amoy Street, Singapore 069878. Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday, 11.30am to 2.30pm, 6pm to 10pm; Friday, 11.30am to 2.30pm, 6pm to 11pm; Saturday, 6pm to 10pm; Closed on Sunday.
Hyde & Co: Nasi Lemak Risotto
Hyde_Co_Nasi_Lemak_Risotto

Nasi Lemak Risotto

If you can’t live without Asian food, the first thing you’d probably want to look for is rice. And risotto is the best Western alternative out there. That said; Hyde & Co, a petite British café at North Bridge Road, combines the best of both worlds with its Nasi Lemak Risotto. Comprising of sambal, prawns, a poached egg, and ikan bilis, this dish is definitely a fusion feast for the senses.
785 North Bridge Road, Singapore 198753. Opening Hours: Monday, 12pm to 6pm; Wednesday to Friday, 12pm to 10pm; Saturday, 11am to 10pm; Sunday, 11am to 6pm. Closed on Tuesday.
Wild Rocket: Pan Seared Scallop Nasi Lemak
scallop_nasi_lemak_wild_rocket

Pan Seared Scallop Nasi Lemak

prata_pizza_wild_rocket

Minced Pork Prata Pizza

Like Po (mentioned earlier in this list), Wild Rocket is a restaurant under Chef Willin Low’s stewardship. The man is well known for his mod-Sin creations that draw inspiration from local hawker fare, and at his first flagship restaurant, you can look forward to trying out novelty dishes like the Pan Seared Scallop Nasi Lemak and the Minced Pork Prata Pizza.
Wild Rocket, 10A Upper Wilkie Road, Singapore 228119. Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 12pm to 2.30pm, 6.30pm to 10.30pm; Saturday, 12pm to 4pm, 6.30pm to 10.30pm; Closed on Sunday.
Sinpopo: Ais Kacang
sinpopo_ais_kacang

Ais Kacang

A sister branch of Everything with Fries and Awfully Chocolate, Sinpopo is a chic café located along Joo Chiat Road that serves up a wide variety of locally inspired, Insta-worthy desserts. And boy, the dessert list here is extensive: there’s chilled pandan soufflé, orange kaya pisang crème brulee, and gula melaka cake, while savoury items aren’t left out either, with a har cheong gai burger sure to make mouths salivate.
Sinpopo, 458 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 427671. Opening Hours: Tuesday to Wednesday, 12pm to 10pm; Friday and Saturday, 12pm to 12am; Sunday, 12pm to 10pm; Closed on Monday.

Local Beauty Brands That Need to Get Under Your Radar

With new homegrown labels filling every gap in the beauty scene, we’ve got even more reasons to go local. Numerous brands like Handmade Heroes, Katfood, and ANIA Skincare have nestled nicely into Naiise stores, while Skin Inc and Allies of Skin have swam across international shores and made names for themselves. Just goes to show that you don’t have to scour the earth in search of quality skincare and makeup. Here, we’ve culled lesser known local beauty brands to add to our ever-growing list.

24 Saturn Skincare

Built to suit an active lifestyle, 24 Saturn Skincare is a brand with an unconventional no-moisturiser philosophy, creating effective serums to replace our need for moisturisers instead. Auolive

The modern Singaporean woman doesn’t have the luxury of time every morning, so to lend us a hand, founder of Auolive Claire Au has developed a line of multitasking products to slash our morning routine in half. Formulated in Switzerland and made in Singapore, every product shines a spotlight on natural ingredients such as gingko biloba leaf, marine collagen, and pomegranate.

And you don’t have to worry, these polishes are cruelty-free and 5-free, which means you won’t find any trace of Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehhyde (Methylene Glycol/Formalin), Toluene, Formaldehyde Resin and Camphor, but you already knew that right?

RESS (Restoration Essence)

When we think of pandan, skincare doesn’t exactly come to mind immediately. Well, the founder of RESS, Sara Davina Soong, is about to change that. She’s caught on to the detoxifying properties of pandan and she’s infused her products with the key ingredient. Her skincare range is an additive and preservative-free one that combats dryness, signs of aging, as well as pigmentation. Just try not to ingest any of it.

The YSL Star Collection Is Back And You Really Don’t Want To Miss Out On It Again

If you were still bummed out by the fact that you didn’t get the chance to own one of the limited edition lipsticks from YSL’s Beaute Holiday collection launched last year, you’re in for a treat. Ugh, can National Day just get any better?
YSL is bringing back those eye-catching lipsticks that are housed in one of the most elegant and prettiest golden shimmery case we’ve ever seen, once again. If you’re a lipstick junkie, getting your hands on one of these star-spangled meteors will probably send you to the moon and back. The attention to detail does not just end there. Upon twisting the waxy bullet, you will find little stars engraved onto the rouge, and trust us, you wouldn’t even bear to smear them onto your lips. They’re just too precious.

sparkle-clash-lipsticks

But here’s the catch: this release is no different from the previous drop, and are while stocks last as well. In addition, while the YSL Beaute collection was available at several YSL stores in town last year, the YSL Star collection will only be available exclusively online at tangs.com. And if you forgot what went down last year, let us just take you back and remind you of the stampede that took place when doors opened. It’s completely haywire:

file-4-11-16-19-26-02

We’re not sure if heading down to a physical store or camping behind your computers is better, but just pray that the site will not crash on you. We’re not sure if these will be restocked once the lipsticks are all wiped out, so it all comes down to fastest fingers first!

These Cats You Can Build Are Way Cuter Than Actual Ones

We’ve never actually had a cat at home, but chances are, like all other pets, you’ve got to feed them, fawn over them, offer them prime position on your sofa/bed, and just take care of them in general — better care than our office succulents ever received anyway, which explains their wilted condition. So from the perspective of a non-expert, all that is too much trouble for the returns of, say, soft purrs and a snuggly belly, until we laid eyes on this beauty.
18156769_1567680329917210_4042718224048245466_o
We’d gladly be cat ladies here. These cuties are made from Lego-style bricks, by a Hong Kong-based building block company called JECKA, meaning you can build your cats and never have to (really) care for them anymore. They may be static figures — made using a special locking technology that you have to assemble yourself with the help of a manual — but each package gets you a pretty life-like kitty in various natural positions; a ginger cat pads lightly on your corner console, while another one could be stretching out on your bedside table.

You can even have a tuxedo cat stretching out its paw for your visitors, which makes each cat ten times more tame than any you’ll ever have. There are currently 32 models sold on their website, each at about $100 (not inclusive of shipping), and with one kit yielding at least 1,300 bricks, you should be quite occupied with your new pet. If you’re somehow not a cat lover, don’t fret because they do have other animals on their site too, including dogs (that corgi!) and birds — no animals were harmed as part of this venture of course, as far as we know, but your wallets will certainly be.

Arm Yourself With These Game-of-Thrones Makeup Brushes

It’s about time someone dedicated a makeup brush set to the HBO television series, Game of Thrones. We already have Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, unicorn and mermaid brushes, and even a burn book containing a set of Mean Girls brushes out there. Surely running into the seventh season is enough to make every Game of Thrones fan want to own one of those metal weapons. While Jon is armed with Longclaw to help him defeat the gnarly White Walker and has his direwolf on standby, Arya Stark has her trusty Needle to kill everyone on her death list, and Daenerys Stormborn has her flame-spewing dragons watching her back, you can conquer your daily makeup routine with some Game of Thrones-inspired makeup brushes.

But the real question is: were these brushes melded in Drogon’s fire? Or were they made from Valyrian steel? Or perhaps prepared at Dragon Stone? Well, according to The Catch 96, these beauty weapons comes in a plated metal finish in either silver, gold, rose gold, or copper, and are made of cruelty-free high quality nylon synthetic bristles.

How To Master Your Eyeshadow Routine

Eye makeup: probably one of the trickiest things to get right. What we’ve learnt along the way is that to make things easier, just keep things simple; and use quality products, of course. Here are two everyday looks that are easy to recreate, using the assortment of eye essentials you can find at Sasa.

Look #1: Day To Night

Pop a couple of eyeshadow sticks – one light, one dark – into your bag, to easily transition your lids from the office to after-hours.

look1
Groom brows with the
Cyber Colors Brow-chitect Gel, brushing through the brow hairs with the spoolie end of the applicator.

look12-1
Apply
TheBalm’s Batter Up Long Wearing Eyeshadow Stick in Shutout all over the lids, from the upper lashlines to right under the browbone. Blend with a finger afterwards.

look13-1

That’s all you need for a daytime look!

look14-1
To bring this look into the night, layer on
TheBalm’s Batter Up Long Wearing Eyeshadow Stick in Slugger, applied on the upper lashlines.

look15-1

Blend it out with an eyeshadow brush.

look16-1
For further definition, line halfway across the waterlines. We used the
Cyber Colors Real Lasting Smudgeproof Gel Liner in 02 Sparkle Custom Black.

look17-1
Add even more sparkle under the eyes with a bit of TheBalm’s Batter Up Long Wearing Eyeshadow Stick in Shutout, now on the inner corners.

look18-1
Coat lashes with GOSH Cosmetics’ Lash Sculpting Fibre Mascara.

look19-1

And now you’ve got party-ready eyes.

Look #2: K-Beauty Classics

The Koreans love their warm eyeshadows. Master these tricky hues by sticking to flattering pinks and peaches, and always applying with a light hand.

look2
Fill in brows with the Chosungah22 Dong Gong Minn Brow Maker, using the bristle part of the applicator.
look2-2
Define the ends of the brows with the triangular sponge tip.
look23
Start with the eyeshadow base. We used the lightest shade from the Chosungah22 Dong Gong Minn Jello Colour Kit, 22 Pluto, a matte ivory.

look2-22
Since it’s a creamy eyeshadow, you can apply and blend with just your fingers. From the same palette, use the shade 22 Jupiter, a matte peachy beige, and blend it over the crease.
look25
Be bold with your eyeliner by picking a purplish shade, like the Cyber Colors Real Lasting Smudgeproof Gel Liner in 05 Burgundy. Use it to line the upper lashlines, extending just slightly beyond the eyes.
look26
Lengthen lashes with the Chosungah22 Dong Gong Minn Rocking Volume Mascara.

look27

Add a bright lip, and you’ve nailed it!

Say Ta-Ta to Underboob Sweat Forever With This Hammock-Like Towel

The last thing any of us girls would want is to accumulate boob sweat when we’ve just stepped out of the shower, especially if we’re rushing to get ready for an appointment. Unfortunately, the sweltering heat in Singapore ain’t on our side. The minute the toilet door open, beads of sweat starts trickling down, and when we blow-dry our hair, it doesn’t help to cool us down either. The struggle is real for the ladies with bigger boobs, but this will no longer be the case because the Ta-Ta Towel is here to soak up all that sweat.

tata towel 5

The Ta-Ta Towel is basically a towel that acts like a hammock for your boobs. Similar to how you wrap over a face towel over your neck, this one comes with two cup ends to hold your boobs up, without feeling restrictive like a bra. However, it seems like the product is meant for ladies with bigger ta-tas, since there are only three sizes available: small (a big C – DD cup), medium (DDD-E), and large (F-H). Each comes with an adjustable strap at the back of the neck so you get the perfect fit for your breasts.

Created by Erin Robertson, the Ta-Ta- Towel was a result of her personal struggles dealing with underboob sweat. Recounting her experience sweating at the boobs area, she said: “I tried everything: I tucked wash cloths under my breasts, I tried dumping baby powder all over me, I even put a t-shirt on and tucked it under my boobs.”
“While I was blow-drying my hair, I just kept thinking: “There has to be a better way to keep the beads of sweat from dripping down my stomach.””
According to testimonials by people who have tried her innovative product, it seems like the towel also comes in handy for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, since the “ultra-soft rayon liner was made with sensitive nipples in mind, and also helps absorb any leaking breast milk during feeding.”

If you would like to get your hands on them, they are available for pre-orders at US$45 each and comes in several colours and designs. You can finally go about your routine without feeling the need to bathe once more and say ta-ta to all that underboob sweat action forever.

Glossier Is Working On a New Product That's Neither Skincare Nor Makeup

Founder Emily Weiss has undoubtedly made Glossier the harbinger of all millennial beauty brands. Every new release causes a whirlwind, and we’re always clamouring for more news on their upcoming launches like a bunch of starving zombies. Well, we may have scored ourselves a tidbit on Glossier’s next product during an Into the Gloss Top Shelf Live session, where Emily Weiss spoke to Glamour UK’s Beauty Director Alessandra Steinherr about all things beauty.

Yup, we all went into a collective frenzy the moment she said, “We’re actually working on a Glossier fragrance. That will be coming out soon.” Naturally, we went sifting through the Internet for more possible updates on this launch, and apparently, the CEO had popped in on the 52nd episode of a beauty podcast called Fat Mascara on 9 March (how did we miss that?!) to dish on the new releases coming our way.
There, she revealed her plans for the readily available Glossier Invisible Shield, and she disclosed that the brand is also working on an eyeshadow and a new fragrance. Emily says, “I’m a big Le Labo and Byredo fan. I go through phases. We’re also working on a perfume and I can say no more than that,” she teases, “But it’s f*cking amazing.” Oh, we bet it’ll be. When you cite the fragrance labels that we love so dearly as your olfactory references, you definitely can’t go wrong.
No word on when the product will drop just yet, but when they do, expect the Internet to go bonkers.

10 Non-Cheesy Ways You Can Dress Up For National Day

To be honest, we’ve never been advocates of the whole red-and-white look — it’s way too patriotic in our book — but if there’s any time to be swept up in national pride, singing along to ‘Home’ and ‘We Will Get There’ in fervour all while waving those cheap plastic flags, ironically of course, it’s now. Or hey, maybe you’ve got a date to watch the actual parade, lucky you. How then do you look cool without wearing, um say, that quintessential but admittedly basic Giordano shirt? Here’s how.

We’ve put together a couple of stuff we’d actually wear, whether it’s a woven bracelet that pays subtle homage to our lion city, or brightly-coloured tote bags crafted from your friendly neighbourhood RC posters. All by our favourite local brands, by the way.

1. Good Morning Clutch

Indie_Mama_Good_Morning_Clutch_Girl_1024x1024

A little ironic, a little kitsch, yet soaked in nostalgia all the same, the “Good Morning” towel has long been a staple among the older generation in Singapore (and many parts of Asia), but today, we’re more than content to swap that essential neck accessory for one we can carry in our hands. Stow all your makeup and necessities in this, and have it stand out against your normal everyday wear. The clutch, $30, by Indie Mamashop, is padded and lined, and made of 100% cotton, though we suggest not leaving your new bag behind to ‘chope’ your lunchtime table at the hawker centre.

2. LampPost Project Tote Bags

lamppostbags

Isn’t this such a great idea! You know how, this time of the year, every Town Council’s fighting for your attention by bringing out their host of colourful banners and posters produced for our National Day Celebrations, mostly hung from nondescript lamp posts? It was after “looking at them fluttering in the warm evening breeze” that one designer thought they made great souvenirs, and hence, this project was birthed — and then expanded into these striking hand-stitched totes made from recycled lamp post banners.

No two bags are the same, and the profit earned from their sale goes to people who stitch them, mainly The Singapore Association for Mental Health and The Looms Workshops. It’s great that they chose totes, the most fuss-free style of bags, as the carrier of these designs — suddenly, with a new silhouette, and sometimes left-of-centre placements, the orchid motifs and lion head symbol look more avant-garde than overly cheesy. Available online at lamppoststyle.com for $28, or shop at Club 21 stores on 9 August, and receive a bag with compliments from Club 21.

3. Red / White outfits

redwhitewear

It takes a bold person to rock red-and-white, so we’d suggest this: red or white. Now, all white’s easy enough, though please avoid the white shirt/white pants combination unless you’re running for a certain political group; instead, go for a crisp shirt dress or this Our Second Nature handkerchief dress, $109, with artistic streaks that could look pretty celebratory, especially when you’re viewing everyone’s favourite part of the parade, the fireworks. Or, go head-to-toe red, which isn’t at all intimidating, really. Both the KNITS vest top and pants co-ords, $110 in total, and In Good Company Oswald Crepe Jumpsuit, $189, are relaxed styles that anyone can pull off, and you can even wear the top and pants separately. Of course, with subtle accessories, you can make the look even more patriotic, but that’s up to you.

4. Singapore Island Necklace

Singapore Island Necklace In White Gold With Red Crystal by Pinwheel Jewels

You could take a little trip around Singapore town, on the Singapore city bus — and then buy this gem of a necklace. The imagery of that chirpy ‘Singapore Town’ song — and its catchy lyrics and tune — will now remain stuck in your heads for a while, but so should the image of this iconic necklace, a subtle piece you can flaunt. The original design by Pinwheel Jewels, $148, features a nicely-cut 18k white gold pendant in the silhouette of the 1965 map of Singapore, because #OG, and even has a single red crystal accent that represents our favourite Singapore moniker, the Little Red Dot. Our island home, indeed.

5. Pins, earrings, etc.

WhatsApp_Image_2017-07-30_at_1.18.17_AM_1024x1024

Honestly, given the enamel pin rage, there’s no shortage of cute pins and things we can focus on, but today, we’ve decided to shed light on this mystical, mythical creature, the Merlion. Designer Chris instead refers to this majestic beast as “Ah Mer”, and has crafted its likeness on an Ah Mer Enamel Pin, $9.80, that we can wear close to our hearts. On a plain shirt or dress or denim jacket, no matter the colour, this little cutie is enough to deter those aunties or uncles who faithfully ask, “Girl/boy ah, how come you never wear red and white today?”

Treasures of Singapore Earrings

At the same time, you can spend $21.90 for these everlasting teh pings, then have them on your ears as a sign of solidarity while you’re tucking into some Nasi Lemak/Laksa/Chilli Crab/Chicken Rice, or virtually any other local dish you’d bound to crave on that special day.

6. INGA by 27A Lipstick

inga anja

We’re true fans of the lipsticks by INGA by 27A ($29); after swiping them onto our lips, we’ve noticed how highly pigmented they are, how velvety soft they go on, while also how hydrating they remain after a while, without that dry effect you get from normal matte products. There are many beautiful shades to choose from, modelled by some beautiful Asian girls, but this time, go for the shade Anja, a vibrant orange-red that’ll definitely compliment your skin tone. Whether the rest of your outfit’s dull or a celebratory multi-coloured mess, at least you’re assured that your face looks more put together than an NSF in uniform.

7. Carrie K. Bracelets

Carrie K. for Singapasar 2017_Model

Here’s another accessory you can wear that doesn’t scream “I’m ready for National Day”, especially since you can style it on any other day as well, and have it still look like a lovely accent of any outfit — a bracelet. Celebrated local jewellery brand Carrie K. is here with the luxe version of those friendship bracelets we all used to own, now woven in metallic red leather and with silver details too. The Singapore Edition Nut & Bolt Leather ($198) and Perfect Match bracelets ($118) are utilitarian designs with a single stunning feature each; a silver-plated brass nut and bolt holds the former together, while a tightly-woven knot is the key detail in the latter, which both make for classy additions to any outfit.
8. GSEWS Tall Bucket Bag

gsews

Now, you could technically go for any bucket bag right, but how about this one, in a warm red, and by a local brand, no less? GSEWS really stands for ‘Grace sews’, and her little hobby brought her to lead this full-fledged venture, where she sews and customises bags and pouches in sleek silhouettes. The range of faux leather goods include, of course, this scarlet bucket bag with gold hardware details, $60, along with sling bags, modern squarish backpacks, or totes where you can choose both the outer shade and inner fabric design, before it’s sewn up to perfection. And then, you get to do the fashion-forward version of the Singapore Sling by uh, slinging it on your shoulder.

9. Matter Prints Pants

Matter_Prints_Media_ClassicWideleg_OrganicCotton_Leharia_Watermelon

There’s already a lot to admire about this initiative — the brand gives us comfortable relaxed basics that focus particularly on textiles, mostly where these fabric come from, as they look to foster designer-artisan collaborations that highlight both cultural heritage and craft. You’ll know exactly how your garment’s made, and as a result, be richer because of it — money well spent eh. These classic wideleg pants, US$129, feature long pleat details and are made from 100% organic cotton poplin, with the print dyed in Jaipur, India, and the stitching then done in Delhi. For a more obvious touch of red, you can opt for the Sideswept Dhoti pants, US$209, crafted from luxurious Indian crepe silk, in a rich burgundy and draped by way of the Indian dhoti; perfect for both the office or a weekend jaunt, depending on how you style it. Yeah, we’d totally laze around the coach and watch the parade in these too.

10. A ParasolBag

parasolbag

In another cool version of the upcycled bag, we have these structured ParasolBags, made from off-cut canvas recovered from parasol factories and sewn into bags — you can immediately tell then that they’d be super weather-resistant, kinda like how the spirit of Singapore is supposed to be according to those National Day Parade displays. Of course, each bag here is thoughtfully measured out too, with their seams showing proud but neat across many of the designs — clearly, go for red if you want to warm up to the 9 Aug celebrations. Available at selected stores including Naiise and Hipvan, or email info@parasolbag.com for an updated catalogue.

Catch the Waves With Billabong’s Warhol-inspired Collection

With summer here to stay all year round in Singapore, it’s always a good excuse to head to the beach for a dip in the cooling water. Get dressed in the most comfy of swimsuits and outerwear with Billabong’s second limited edition drop of Warhol Surf. We know. Since when was Andy Warhol a surfer guy?
Well, Billabong took a look through Warhol’s archives and as it turns out, his works were found to be inspired a lot by the surfing community, consisting of collections of photographs featuring surfers, tropical vintage motels, and beach scenes. These were then brought to life with Billabong’s take on the brand’s iconic boardshorts, bikinis, and complimentary products, all of which giving off a laidback and carefree vibe.

Some key pieces include Warhol’s Skull series, which sees the brand featuring the skull motif along with Warhol’s signature bold black and white mod stripes on a cut and sewn boardshort. The black and white effect on iconic objects are also seen on a washed geometric yardage print boardshort, while images from the Warhol archives were also deliberately printed on vintage washed cotton tees, with neon fade palm yardage created with photographs taken by Warhol.

You don’t have to be good in surfing to look like a surfer boy or surfer girl, but you can still dress like one with these beachwear staples from Billabong’s artistic collaboration with Andy Warhol. After all, it’s all about feeling the beach vibes.

The Ultimate Longwear Metallic Liquid Lipstick Is Here

“Coming soon.” To the uninitiated members of Kat Von D’s cult, those two words wouldn’t really make an impact, but amongst the worshippers of her beauty brand, they’re sure to cause a frenzy. Well, the long wait (6 months can feel like an eternity, okay) for Kat Von D’s glitter lipstick is finally over. The first shade of her new Everlasting Glimmer Veil has just dropped.

According to the tattoo artist, this would be the world’s first 24-hour metallic lipstick, and that information alone is all we need to fuel that impulse purchase. If you’ve ever tried to pull off a glitter or metallic lip for the whole day, you’ll probably be familiar with the issues that arise when you’re wearing a sparkly lip topper. Most of the time, it gets all over the place, wears off unevenly, and feels tacky on the lips. With the Glimmer Veil, however, it promises a 3D crystallised finish, which is something we’re incredibly hyped up about.

Before its launch, Kat Von D took to her personal Instagram account and posted a selfie of herself wearing the shade Satellite, a sky blue with a foil finish, sharing, “This formula is like heaven on your lips, it’s longwear as f*ck, and is designed to be worn by itself or over any other longwear formula. In this photo I’m wearing one coat of #GlimmerVeil by itself!” It sounds pretty darn close to what the Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Lip Top Coats aim to do, except these will be much more opaque and come in totally different shades.

There may only be one shade up for grabs at the moment, but we can expect 8 more shades to roll out on the 22nd of August. Just look at that gorgeous gold, vivid pink, and mysterious grey-black (we’ll be using that one to complete our upcoming Halloween look).
