It's Time We Gave This Classic Longchamp Bag A Cute Revamp

Now, this particular Longchamp bag should be very familiar to you — the Le Pliage is an easy-to-carry tote that can surprisingly hold plenty of your daily essentials and still look sleek, a light, foldaway design in an array of colours that’s inspired by origami, and probably the first branded bag you own too. You might have even sprung for the upgraded version: the Le Pliage Cuir that’s made of soft and supple metis leather, a combination of the qualities of lambskin and goatskin, for a sophisticated and enduring look. Is it basic? Well, uh, kinda… But wait till you see its latest iteration — and we don’t mean just new fancy colour combinations.

Customisation has certainly been a big trend for fashion brands in the past few years, and Longchamp is no stranger to this; in fact, you can say that they’re one of the first brands to have pioneered the trend, inviting customers to create their own Le Pliage tote online, and offering us to pick from various sizes, handles, colour combinations and hardware, or have our initials embossed or embroidered. This time though, you can make the ubiquitous bag even more unique, with these limited edition badges clipped to your tote.
badges

The limited edition Le Pliage Badges bag is a playful spin on the old classic, and with each design (there are four colours to choose from), you get to choose three badges to accessorise with. From hearts and stars, to kittens, and even symbols that remind us of the brand’s Parisian heritage, there are 14 original badges to choose from, so the trouble’s really narrowing it down to your three favourites. Each roomy bag, along with the badges, goes for $1,100 — still alright for owning a part of Longchamp, especially one you can truly call your own.

Always wished the LINE Friends store wasn’t just a pop-up store but a permanent one instead? Well, your wish has finally been granted. Fans of Brown, Cony, James and all the other fun-loving characters from LINE will no longer have to wait around for another pop-up store, or buy their merchandise only when traveling overseas, because LINE Friends just launched an official store exclusively on Lazada Singapore!

Screen Shot 2017-07-25 at 11.30.50 am

The permanent store will offer a wide array of products ranging from toys, stationery, bags and other accessories, enough to satisfy deprived fans who have waited for this to happen for so long. In addition to the items sold previously at the pop-up stores that were set up in the past two years, you will also be able to find new merchandise that weren’t available before, such as the “Hug Me” lamp and compact travel set.

To celebrate the grand opening, customers will also be treated with two launch promotions as well! If you are a hardcore fan and managed to buy over $60 worth of merchandise from the LINE Friends official store, you will receive a free limited edition LINE Rangers figurine. But if you’re not intending to purchase a bunch of stuff, fret not! From now till 31st July 2017, a randomly selected LINE Friends postcard will be sent to all customers who buy from the official LINE Friends store!

Though many fans would’ve wished for a brick-and-mortar store with gigantic plushies of Brown and Cony in it, launching an official online store is one step closer to achieving that. For now, you don’t have to scramble and find time to make a trip down to pop-up stores just to get your hands on the products; you can just easily shop from the comfort of your own home, browsing through the official store via lazada.sg.

Is There Ever A Need For $40 Hair Ties?

So we were casually browsing sephora.sg, as we do to chase away the Monday blues every week, when we spotted something very interesting indeed buried within the new launches page:
silke-london-screenshot
Silke London, one of the brands that has just been added to Sephora’s fold, sells this container of hair ties that’s going for $40.
Yup, $40 – it ain’t a typo, and they didn’t mean $4 – this pack of 6 humble hair elastics indeed costs as much as a nice dinner at a mid-range restaurant. We were baffled, so we had to dig a little more. Who are the people behind Silke London, and why on earth do they dare to sell hair ties at such a ludicrous price?
The woman behind this brand is one Maria Soutiriou, a London hairstylist who decided she was done with waking up to a pillow strewn with broken strands of hair. Convinced that this was all the fault of her rough bedsheets, she set out to find a material she could wrap her hair in while she slept… and obviously, the answer was pure silk.
Silke London’s first and main product is the Silke Hair Wrap, in a curated range of colours and all made to keep your bedsheets from ruining your hair, as they apparently did for Soutiriou. That’s going for a cool $85 at Sephora, but paying that much for an entire head wrap, one that you can incorporate into an outfit as well, seems more palatable than those $40 hair ties.

silke-london-hair-ties

They even have fancy names – (from left) Cleopatra, Frida and Coco.

So yes, back to those hair ties. Their key selling points are that they have a 100% silk exterior and a “super strong elastic interior”, so your hair is held firmly with none of the damaging friction, clawing, tugging, and kinks that can come with regular hair ties.
Sure, cheap hair ties are definitely known to pull your hair out, leave unsightly kinks, and all of those things that most of us have experienced. These are side effects of tying your hair that we’ve grown used to, so a major upgrade to tying our hair with silk was never something that crossed our minds. Now that Silke London has shown us that it’s an option that’s just a few clicks away on Sephora’s website, is it something we’re going to consider?
After seriously considering the potential benefits of wrapping our hair in silk in a bid to never have to pull out at least a few strands of hair with every hair tie again, the verdict is this: $40 for 6 hair ties still is ridiculous. After all, don’t hair ties get lost all the time, even with our best efforts to keep them in sight? With every Silke London hair tie you lose, that’s a cool $6.70 you’re never going to see again.
To conclude, we’ll have to call this one of the more ridiculous things we’ve spotted in Sephora to date. So… are you fancy enough to treat your crowning glory to Silke London? No judgment if you are, but better not let those hair ties out of your sight, just saying.
Also, from experience, these do a pretty good job of not pulling out your hair. Also, they go for $2 for 3, available at your nearest mama shop.

Keeping Up With Comic-Con: The Best Trailers We Saw Over The Weekend

Even if you’ll never admit to being a geek, you’ll have to agree that all the entertainment industry news and trailers bursting out of San Diego Comic-Con have been pretty damn thrilling — it’s like Christmas came early and you got to open all your presents in one shot. Though it’s near impossible to catch up with every detail of what’s happening, we’ll help you along with a round-up of the biggest trailers and reveals that you should be updated about, which, unsurprisingly, amounts to a lot of superheroes fare and follow-ups to hit television series.

Thor: Ragnarok (26 Oct)

Marvel seems to be having a lot of fun with this one — they’re taking an almost Guardians of the Galaxy tone for this instalment of Thor, note all the trippy flashes of colour, crammed visual spectacle and quick pacing, plus a refreshing humour, something that was brought up with main star Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi who were getting bored with what Marvel had presented before. Oh we’re definitely loving this new direction alright; goodbye Shakespearean-level serious Asgardian God of Thunder!
In the latest trailer, we also get more deets on the new Goddess of Death, Hela, played by Cate Blanchett who’s downright gorgeous in a flowing silk cape and grand headpiece (who smashes Thor’s beloved Mjolnir, nooo), as well as wide shots of the Norse apocalypse Ragnarok. There’s also a scene of the two brothers working together to save the universe, to appease all you Loki fans. Still, wherefore art thou Avengers: Infinity War trailer?!
Justice League (17 Nov)

Honestly, we were just staring in awe at Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman the entire first part of the trailer — are we to blame, really, because she’s obviously the best and most honourable part of the Justice League right? In less biased news, the new trailer, revealed at this year’s Warner Brothers panel, also gives us gratuitous screen time for heroes Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), who’s already set to be the comedic foil, and Cyborg (Ray Fisher).
Of course, Batman’s (Ben Affleck) the one bringing this superhuman co-op together, after realising they have to stand united against big baddie, Steppenwolf. Also, that strange encounter with Alfred at the end, could it be the moment Superman… returns? Well, theories aside, with the trailer adopting a more traditional superhero movie style, serious “the world as we know it is ending” overtones, and action-packed scenes of stylised slow motion stunts — a marked difference from Marvel’s reveal — we’re definitely hoping this brings, um, justice to the DCEU.
Stranger Things (27 Oct)

One of the more… thrilling releases for television this year saw our first trailer for the second season of Stranger Things — one that makes impressive use of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and that classic voiceover to amp up the spine-chilling suspense. There’s plenty of 80s nostalgia (of course, our foursome dress up as Ghostbusters for Halloween), and nice callbacks to horror genre tropes to depict a world that’s still reeling from the grotesque demogorgon and Will Byers’ return from the dreadful Upside Down.
Sure, we’re getting questions more than answers, but that’s a good thing; for once, compared to the deluge of information/spoilers that big-budget movie trailers tend to divulge, we’re getting actual old-school suspense that film students would be more than happy to study. Oh, and yes, welcome back Eleven.
Westworld (2018)

Seeing how they only started filming just this month, we’re surprised to get this many scenes packed into the 1:49 min trailer, but hey, we might as well start breaking this down and speculating about it for an entire year. After the violent robot uprising of last season, it looks like we’re landing in the immediate aftermath of that bloody gala dinner. The trailer starts off innocuously enough, though with a sinister blood splatter over the iconic piano, before we see Bernard (or, Arnold?), played by Jeffrey Wright, staring at the body of a dead tiger — immediately, we find ourselves questioning the locale of this “world”.
And then, to the ironically cheerful tune of “I Gotta Be Me”, we get Mauve (Thandie Newton) and Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman) sizing up the massacre in the control room, followed by scenes of Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and ever-loyal Teddy (James Marsden) on horseback, all trigger-happy and vengeful towards the park’s guests. Cut to Bernard/Arnold back in an all-terrain vehicle with the only park employees we like, Elsie and Stubbs. Huh. And right at the end, a bloodied Man in Black (Ed Harris) grinning, finally happy that the game’s about to get started for real.
There’s still no specific release date tied to Westworld‘s return next year, but we’ve been told that it will take a while; after all, showrunner Jonathan Nolan claims this is an “ambitious project”. Well, we at least have this footage to mull over. And looking at how the show actually rewards the fans who come up with the most detailed analysis, it’s best you do a Westworld and watch this little snippet over, over, and over again.
Ready Player One (30 March 2018)

Here’s a new movie to get excited about. Instead of sequels after sequels, the Internet for once got pretty excited about this upcoming release, a virtual reality movie that also marks Steven Spielberg’s foray back into the genre that he’s so lovingly known for, sci-fi. It’s also the director’s first live-action action fantasy since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008.
The film, like the Ernest Cline novel it’s based on, is set in the year 2045 where people use virtual reality to escape from their miserable circumstances; they thus enter OASIS, an expansive universe created by the eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When he dies however, he leaves behind a massive fortune for the first person to find a digital Easter egg he’s hidden somewhere, which is where we find our young protagonist Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), at the start of this epic hunt — cue mind-bending action and fantastical scenes, along with loads of 80s nostalgia that include the Iron Giant and Back to the Future‘s Delorean.
Death Note (25 Aug)

Spoiler alert! If you don’t already know the premise of this popular manga/anime series, we suggest not getting into this short clip of the Netflix movie adaptation because it’s a lot to take in. Those that don’t mind though, go right ahead. As said by Ryuk (also, elsewhere, Danaerys Targaryen), shall we begin? Right off the bat, we get our first chilling encounter between this American-version of Light (Nat Wolff) and death god Ryuk, played to snarling perfection by William Dafoe.
Those red eyes and shadowy skeletal figure have the exact feel of the original! But Ryuk’s look isn’t the scariest part of him. It’s the casual way he urges Light to “take care of this situation” and “help her”, even though it entails a death wish on the girl’s perpetuators, one that’s far more sinister than the original — we can imagine looking away from our computer screens if they actually show how the scene plays out. The show comes off the back of controversy about its all-white casting, but hey, we’d still watch it anyway.
Marvel’s The Defenders (18 Aug)

The panel lit up with appearances from all of the heroes — namely, Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). While Comic-Con attendees got all the perks of actually watching the series premiere of Marvel’s The Defenders, let’s just be content with this teaser: in it, a villainous and jaded Sigourney Weaver goes up against our unlikely New York-based heroes who seem to have gotten off on a rocky start. They’re not thrilled, alright.
The series is probably gonna play off on the weird combination of misfits, since they’ve kindly provided this description “Blind ninja. Smart-ass detective. Bulletproof ex-con. Kung Fu billionaire”. Man, we haven’t even gotten to their personal issues! Good luck, New York City.
Bright (22 Nov)

It isn’t a surprise that Netflix Originals are dominating all the post-Comic Con hype, but see, we’re slowly realising that they’re not just about highly-anticipated tv series — there are movies too. And they have high hopes on this one: a big-budget film that stars Will Smith, which mixes up your usual L.A. crime movie with strange fantasy creatures including orcs and elves. Essentially, Smith plays a policeman who’s cop buddy’s an orc (Joel Edgerton), who must work together to protect a young female elf and a forgotten relic.
At the panel though, Smith hilariously said, “It felt really great to be an African-American police officer. They found somebody else to be racist against. I’ve never been on that side of racism when you’re black: ‘Listen, man, I don’t want no Orcs in my car!’” Maybe this will bring some insightful perspectives, like Zootopia did. No doubt, there are plenty of grand, otherworldly scenes here, rather unexpected if you imagine their original premise being something of an urban flick (the drab scenery of L.A. Confidential comes to mind). Mixing prophecies and police drama? Netflix pulling off a blockbuster? Count us in.
Game of Thrones

Season 7 has already started, so consider this more insight into the show of the season, which we assume you’re about to watch… right about now.
Other honourable mentions: The Walking Dead (23 Oct), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (22 Sept), Pacific Rim: Uprising (Feb 2018), Jigsaw (27 Oct), American Horror Story (5 Oct), Star Trek: Discovery, Gotham (28 Sept), Arrow (12 Oct), Marvel’s Inhumans (1 Sept).

Why This 'It' K-Beauty Brand Infuses Maple Tree Sap In Every Product

The market for Korean beauty is spilling with countless labels, each one clamouring to be the next It-brand within the industry. After being featured on Korea’s top beauty programme, Get it Beauty (it’s a pretty huge deal – just FYI), however, May Coop bumped itself up and earned its place in the relentless Korean beauty market. But what exactly makes this skincare line so unique?

17880265_441879896162565_2615738165274004509_o

For this humble brand, it all began with the sap of a maple tree. That’s right. The key ingredient in May Coop’s skincare line is in fact maple tree sap. What we often associate with maple is maple syrup, but unfortunately, there’ll be none of that sweet condiment here. What we’ll be looking at today is this natural liquid that’s loaded with nourishing and revitalising ingredients. Previously a beauty research and manufacturing company, May Coop’s founders discovered maple sap from a deep layer of soil located at Mount Jiri.
Apparently, the size of a sap molecule is similar and compatible to that of our body’s own moisture molecules, which is why it has a much quicker absorption rate, and it’s also why May Coop doesn’t need to add water to their concoctions. Using a special ingredient that’s rich in vitamins, amino acids, and a good amount of minerals doesn’t just make maple tree sap a perfect substitute for water, it’s also an amazing foundation for their entire product lineup.

In particular, May Coop’s star product, Raw Sauce, contains a high concentration of maple tree sap. Don’t worry, it’s not something used to top off your salad. This toner/essence formulation bears a pleasant floral fragrance that should be tolerable on sensitive skin, and what’s dispensed is a consistency that’s slightly more viscous than water, but it sinks into the skin within mere seconds without leaving any residue. The Raw Sauce combines the efficacy of maple tree sap with Fructan Powder (a.k.a. shallot root extract) to boost skin cells and revitalise dull, tired complexions.
If you’re a K-beauty junkie and this skincare brand has piqued your interest, you’ll be pleased to know that it has joined the Ecoluxury Beauty lineup at TANGS at Tangs Plaza L4 and Tangs VivoCity. Watch the video below to discover more beauty brands that harness the power of nature, because they’re coming to TANGS too.

Lush Now Lets You Add Jelly To Your Bath

You’ve seen wacky videos of people swimming in their self-made slime and probably thought it looked fun and wanted to try it out for yourself, but didn’t want to deal with the mess and the nagging from your mum that comes after. But guess what? Now you can.
When Lush released their latest product, Jelly Bombs, imagine how excited the inner kids in all of us were? These jelly bombs release “a spectacular jelly made from sodium alginate, which comes from a mineral-rich seaweed” when it mixes with water. Oh, and there’s one that is Harry Potter-inspired, which is our fav (obvi) and the one that we’re gonna get for our virgin jelly bomb bath.

Screen Shot 2017-07-24 at 6.04.28 pm

Screen Shot 2017-07-24 at 6.04.58 pm

There are currently four jelly bombs available – Marmalade, The Big Sleep, Green Coconut and the Dark Arts (Oooo…). Needless to say, we’re zooming right in on the Harry Potter-themed one. Here’s how Lush described it: “When you’re feeling like going to the dark side, dabble in the dark arts, slither into a hot bath and cast this Jelly Bomb into the water.” Oh Lush, we totally got your pun: “Slyther-in”. Shame on you if you didn’t get that!

Dark Arts Jelly Bomb

The Big Sleep Jelly Bomb

The Dark Arts jelly bomb is a concoction of Brazilian orange oil, spicy cinnamon leaf oil and sweet almond essential oil while The Big Sleep is a comforting mix of chamomile and lavender that will leave you feeling calm and relaxed.

For those of you who can’t travel far for a beach holiday, you can now do so at the comfort of your own bathtub with the Green Coconut jelly bomb that comes with a tropical scent. Lastly, Marmalade, as the name suggests, is a citrus-packed jelly bomb that will help brighten the skin with all that zesty goodness.

But before you get too excited and drop your jelly bomb into your bathtub, you might want to grab your phone real quick to get a Boomerang shot for your Instagram Stories. You’re welcome.
The jelly bombs are only currently available in the UK and will be available in the US this Fall, so we can’t really tell if it will reach Singapore anytime soon. Your best bet is to order it online since Lush UK do provide international shipping.

Innovative Mascaras To Give Your Lashes An Extra Boost

Mascaras have gotten really, really interesting of late. Probably because so many people obsess over the length of volume of their lashes, that the beauty brands have poured so many resources into developing lash products that come with a high level of innovation, all in a bid to give you the longest and most voluminous lashes in the shortest time possible. Here are the ones that have gotten our attention recently.

Maybelline The Falsies Push Up Angel Waterproof Mascara

maybelline-push-up-angel

What’s innovative: The tapered brush, which has a curved edge and bristles increasing in length from top to bottom. This helps sweep the lashes towards the outer corners of the eyes, to give them a lifted, winged effect that opens up the eyes – much like how a cat eye does.
$21.90, available at Watsons, Guardian, Sasa, and major supermarkets and department stores

M.A.C Bold & Bad Lash
mac-bold-and-bad-lash

What’s innovative: We couldn’t even tell this has two brushes in it at first! While that isn’t a new trait, but what’s cool about this very boldly-packaged mascara from M.A.C is that each brush is held in a separate chamber, each with a different formula. The larger brush for the top lashes is for boosting volume, while the bottom one is for creating definition.
$38, available at M.A.C stores and counters from 1 August 2017.

Dior Diorshow Pump ‘N’ Volume
diorshow-pump-n-volume

What’s innovative: Don’t worry, this mascara doesn’t involve going against everything we’ve been told about taking care of our mascaras, and pumping air into the tube. Instead, it’s about squeezing the tube to make the flexible elastomer formula more fluid; the brush will then coat lashes generously with this formula to, as they say, pump up the volume. Squeezing before each use also ensures the formula that goes onto the brush is more “fresh”.
$53, available at the Dior Beauty store and counters.

Mamonde Big Eye Long & Curl Mascara
mamonde-big-eye-long-curl-mascara

What’s innovative: Meet what Mamonde calls the “BonBon Brush”, an hourglass-shaped bristle applicator that’s made of alternating hard and soft sections – the hard material for curling, lengthening and separation, and the soft parts for even application of the product onto individual hairs.
$22, available at Mamonde counters and Lazada.

Sephora Outrageous Curl – Dramatic Volume and Curve Mascara
sephora-outrageous-curl

What’s innovative: The applicator was designed to look like a mini rounded hairbrush for your eyelashes, so you can give them a blowout too. The rounded contours makes it possible to reach the lashes from the roots and coat them all the way to the tips, while diagonal bristles separate individual lashes.
$26, available at Sephora stores and sephora.sg.

IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes 5-in-1 Mascara
it-cosmetics-hello-lashes-5-in-1

What’s innovative: That lash ball detailer tip, what is meant to be held perpendicularly to your face, to really prop up your lashes. The formula itself’s pretty powerful too, promising to boost lash volume by almost 5 times, with an ingredient list containing collagen, proteins and amino acids.
$42, available at Sephora ION and sephora.sg.

Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Crystal Lash Top Coat
estee lauder crystal lash topcoat

What’s innovative: Um, the sheer fact that this is a glitter top coat for your lashes? The glitter pigments are suspended in a clear film that you’re supposed to apply after your regular mascara has dried, using a felt doe foot applicator.
$44, available at the Estée Lauder store and counters from September 2017

We Need To Get Our Hands On These Mean Girls Brushes And The Burn Book That Comes With It

Back in 2004 when Mean Girls was released, every girl clique out there had their very own versions of the burn book, where all the gossip and names of the people we “unfriended” went into. Yeap, a lil childish but 13 years on, we’re still not over it. And to feed our inner “mean girl”, Spectrum Collections announced last Wednesday (of course), that they’ve partnered with Paramount Pictures to bring in an official Mean Girls-inspired makeup brush line and makeup bags that are a legit replica of the burn book. That is so fetch!

The most basic set consists of 10 brushes that comes with a Spectrum x Mean Girls pouch bag, and costs £49.99. But we mean, the whole point of this collection is to get the Burn Book, right? You can opt for the mini Burn Book bag with 10 brushes stored inside for £79.99, or purchase a full size Burn Book Brush Book that can hold up to 40 brushes for £49.99.

The bristles are in pink (obvi!) and the handles of the brushes have an ombre gradation, running from pink to purple. And that’s not all – each brush features a Mean Girls quote that we’ve fully memorised over the years, such as the iconic line: “On Wednesdays, we wear pink”. So now when you do your makeup every morning, we’re pretty sure you’ll feel so ratchet. What are you waiting for? Make sure you mark your calendars this August 30!

Spectrum Collection Mean Girls Collection, £14.99 – £79.99, available from 30 August 2017 at spectrumcollections.com.

“Cards Against Muggles” is the Perfect NSFW Card Game for Potterheads

Two new Harry Potter books may be debuting later this October, but till then, here’s the perfect thing to keep the magic strong: introducing “Cards Against Muggles” – an NSFW Potterhead card game that pretty much runs on the same formula as popular party game Cards Against Humanity.

Like the original, it’s tailor-made for people who get off on inappropriate humour. And it works exactly the same way too. You’re required to stitch together funny sentences to trigger the most laughs, although you’d probably need to have a lot of in-depth knowledge to ‘get’ the jokes from the HP version.

Created by a group of hardcore Harry Potter fans, the card game features a total of 1,300 cards, with some of the cheekier ones parading statements like: “Having to explain to Madam Pomfrey why you used engorgio on your dick.” or “Losing the House Cup because Harry and his friends went on another fu*king adventure.”

Want to score these cards? Well, the good news is that all 1,300 cards are available for download online at muggles.cards. The bad news is that you’ve got to print them out all by yourself, which to us, is a bit of a hassle (not to mention, a waste of money).
If that doesn’t bother you however, here’s your chance to show that you’re a true blue Potter fan. Oh, and you might want to check out the company’s other card game – “Cards Against Disney” – if making dirty jokes about Harry and Snape get a little too tiresome.

Here's Why Faux Freckles Are Making A Huge Comeback

As of late, we’ve noticed a tweak in preference when it comes to foundation coverage. Instead of masking every bit of skin with intense pigments, makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts alike are opting for a diffused, sheer coverage to ring in the season of summer. With that lighter opacity comes visible freckles, more are letting their tiny sun-spots peek through – the perfect time to embrace a fresh face.
We’re not just referring to natural freckles here, though. Yup, people have been reaching out for their brown eyebrow pencils to dot faux freckles over their nose and cheeks. It may sound a little confusing, after all, why would anyone draw freckles on their face? We’ll allow Selena Gomez’s new makeup look do the talking.

#FETISH July 13th ❤️

A post shared by Hung Vanngo (@hungvanngo) on

A couple weeks back, the singer released an official video for her latest single “Fetish“. While the camera was mostly locked in on her lips, the freckles that were sprinkled across her nose and cheeks were the centre of attention. Apparently, a ton of people were upset over those faux freckles, which her makeup artist Hung Vanngo admitted to dotting on, but we’re actually all for it.

Yes, freckles have caused a great deal of distress amongst those who have to live with them, but if this makeup trend has taught us anything, it’s that it’s time to embrace these so-called flaws and make ’em work. We’ve witnessed it too – an increasing amount of individuals are no longer interested in burying them deep in layers of makeup.
If you’d like to give yourself some freckling without having to ink them on, use a brown eyebrow pencil to get on board the speckled train. You can also pick up the Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon in the shade Earthquake, as used on Selena herself. With a light hand, draw on your freckles in varying sizes, mimicking their natural appearance, and pat it all down with a makeup sponge when you’re done.

It Seems Like This Blue Butterfly Emoji Is Becoming A Thing Now

As of late, we’ve been spotting this very weird trend on Instagram and you’ll never guess what it is. It’s nothing beauty or fashion related, but instead, it’s the appearance of this random blue butterfly emoji. We’re referring to this:

ButterflyEmoji

It all started out a few months back when we started noticing this emoji being actively used by models and fashion influencers. At that point of time, we simply shrugged it off because we thought it was just a random emoji chosen by these celebs. But recently, we are seeing a lot more of it, so much so that it just seemed like a strange phenomenon. So we just had to figure out what the hell is going on with these celebs and their use of this super random emoji.
Firstly, unlike the flames emoji, the underlined 100 emoji, or the hearts emoji, going into the nature section is pretty rare, let alone going into the insects’ section of your emoji keyboard – because why on earth would you use an insect as your Instagram caption?

So when we googled, nobody actually took notice of this trend except for an online site called lifeandstylemag who reported that the butterfly emoji is now Kylie Jenner’s new obsession ever since she had something going on with rapper, Travis Scott. Both Jenner and Scott exchanged tweets that included the butterfly emoji, probably using it as a secret signal between themselves. And then it all just seemed to make sense. Scott had released a song called “Butterfly Effect” and he used the blue winged insect emoji heavily for his song promotion on his Instagram posts.

Ok, so we get that this emoji is their new way of communicating with each other, but is there any other reason why these other celebs and random strangers are using it in their captions and commenting with the butterfly emoji? Is it just for fun and out of pure randomness? Perhaps they are fans of Scott and his latest song. Or maybe they are subtly hinting that they have a butterfly effect (a concept whereby a small action can have a huge impact) on their followers. It may seem like we’re making a big deal out of it, but really, if you think about it, it’s strange. Well, whatever it is, we might just start using the blue butterfly emoji just to join in the fun.

Why This Enzyme is a Must in Every Glowgetter's Beauty Routine

Halloween isn’t exactly around the corner, but we’ve spotted a bunch of pumpkin-infused beauty products popping up lately, particularly in exfoliating formulas, which is why we’re going to zoom in on this trending ingredient right now.
What is it?
Nope, we’re not looking at jack-o’-lanterns, or pumpkin pie, and definitely not pumpkin-spice anything. The key ingredient that’s found in more than a few cleansers, masks, body lotions, body washes, and hand creams is in fact pumpkin extract, specifically pumpkin enzyme.
What does it do?
Pumpkin seed extract contains proteases, a kind of enzyme that helps to break down protein, so it’s a gentle way to exfoliate the skin. Imagine tiny little Pac-Men eating away at your dead skin cells. Ain’t that cute? Anyway, to boost its efficacy a tad, pumpkin enzymes are often combined with supporting chemical exfoliators like lactic, salicylic, or glycolic acid. Those will help do the extra heavy lifting to leave your complexion looking fresh and radiant.
The extract is also packed with essentially fatty acids, vitamins A and C to brighten, as well as zinc to help expedite your skin’s natural healing process and tackle blemishes. These all work to rebuild your skin’s elasticity, and since pumpkin seed extract is an emollient ingredient, it’ll help to lock in the moisture and repair the skin’s barrier, too. Keep reading to get acquainted with this stellar ingredient.

Thanks for introducing us all to this gem, Anna Gardner. The Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel is a balmy gel formula that turns into an oil when you massage it into your skin. With water, it emulsifies a little to cleanse and rid the skin of impurities. It’s also loaded with natural actives, so use a muslin cloth with this for baby soft skin right after cleansing.

June Jacobs Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Masque

This detoxifying mask combines pumpkin enzyme with a potent blend of antioxidants featuring goji berry, pomegranate and grape seed extracts to fend off free radicals. For those who are deathly afraid of premature aging, this one’s for you. It shields the skin from environmental toxins while coating it in nourishment. That hefty price tag it comes with may seem unjust, but remember, a little goes an incredibly long way with this one.

Kate Somerville Exfolikate Gentle Exfoliating Treatment

There’s pumpkin, papaya, and pineapple enzymes in here to help dissolve dead skin cells, boost circulation, and reduce the size of gaping pores, but those natural exfoliants don’t just work alone. Lactic acid and natural extracts such as lemon, orange, and sage work with them to give you that radiant glow. Now, this one’s a powerful exfoliating treatment, which is why you should leave it on for only 2 minutes and rinse it off. For those with sensitive skin, do yourself a huge favour and patch test!

Surprise, this one contains pumpkin enzymes too. It works alongside AHAs and aluminium oxide crystals to even out your skin tone and refine the texture of your complexion. Its scent has been compared to cinnamon-spiced pumpkin pie, so try to not eat it (and don’t say we didn’t warn you). Your skin might be flushed right after using this, but it should dissipate in moments to reveal a glowing complexion.

Now, here’s one that’s wallet-friendly (we feel you). Similarly, this pumpkin-infused mask works synergistically with AHAs to dissolve dead skin cells and lift away dullness, but this one’s blended with the brand’s trademark Fruit Stem Cell Complex and manuka honey to put a blanket of moisture over your skin. After 10 minutes, you’ll be left with a brighter, more luminous complexion.

Behold, Our Favourite Luxury Home Collections By High Fashion Brands

Who doesn’t want a home brimming with personality, and if we could afford it, filled with the most luxurious of home goods as well? Come on, what’s an IKEA sofa in light of all these refined goods? Not only are their makers famed fashion houses who’ve mastered the art of couture and expert craftsmanship, these luxury pieces — furniture, home accessories, tableware, or otherwise — have been given the stamp of approval, sometimes literally in monogram, and sometimes in house codes that proudly show off each brand’s design flair. After all, your house needs some dressing up too. Here are the ones that stand out.

1. Gucci

03-gucci-home-decor-launch

These illustrations by Alex Merry, all bright colours and wonky perspectives, are just an insight to the world of Gucci Décor, a collection filled with maximalist — or, anti-minimalist — pieces that you’d want to scatter haphazardly all over your house. In true Alessandro Michele style, his signature designs for the Italian brand’s first foray into the home are being translated into wallpaper, folding screens, wooden chairs, as well as smaller items such as cushions, candles and trays, all of which evoke a certain rich romanticism.

“The idea is not to prescribe a particular decorative look, but to provide elements that allow for living spaces to be customised,” the brand describes, and as such, you’ll have the absolute freedom to get anything in the joyous colour palette, and place that where you like, no holds barred. The debut collection also see familiar motifs such as the the striped snake, or blooming flora influenced by the Gucci Garden lexicon.

Classy and refined, owning a piece of Hermès in your home is dream for any design lover, simply because they do clean, covetable decorative pieces so well. There’s a range of home items you can own from this year’s Hermès Objets Fall/Winter collection — on top of a skateboard, there are also change trays in lacquered wood and cowhide, beautiful blankets that feature unique patterns usually seen on their silk scarves or a cashmere one that features a discrete”H” logo and an intricate dye-ing process, or simple furniture that’d immediately show off your elevated taste, including the ones you see here.

With all that fine leather-making skills on their side, you know you’re buying into some great quality too. If you don’t mind older, but just as timeless pieces from the fashion side, you can head over to their sprawling boutique at Liat Towers to see the display of tableware, stationery, and more in a homely setting that’ll have you itching to buy something right away.

When they made their debut at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, everyone was floored. Louis Vuitton transformed the space with their stunning travel-inspired Objets Nomades collection, all of which are thoughtfully and beautifully crafted thanks to the bevy of talented designer behind them. You’ve got to see all 26 items for yourself — furniture that includes a hammock, deckchair, swing chair, or a foldable stool, but also presented in imaginative forms that also celebrate fine materials and meticulous craftsmanship.

There are 10 new limited edition Objets that add even more life to the already lively collection — this includes the Campana Brothers’ modular sofa that’s inspired by clouds and round sea apples that you can remove or fit together into a cloud-like puzzle, Atelier Oi’s chair that uses repurposed straps that look like tan leather belts on an angular steel frame.

Then, there’s Marcel Wanders’ modern rocking chair that’s just so elegantly curved, while with quilting that pays homage to the house’s legendary trunks, and a gorgeous Blossom Stool by Tokujin Yoshioka that takes its curvaceous codes from the Louis Vuitton Monogram, resulting in this seamless swirl of a seat that’s crafted in soft wood and leather. You’ll get a sense of adventure, and a dream-like quality with all their designs — simply because they’re so out of this world.

4. Dolce & Gabbana
dolcegabbana_smeg_toaster

We expect nothing but over-the-top and quirky fun with this Italian house, especially since they’ve been on a roll with their whimsical accessories and shoes lately, but what if you need a dose of perkiness in your home? Well, they’ve recently worked together with pastel-coloured kitchen appliances brand SMEG for a “Sicily Is My Love” collection, resulting in curious blenders, toasters, citrus juicers, coffee machines, kettles, blenders, stand mixers and slow juicers (phew!) that you’ll want as the centrepiece of your kitchen. Fyi, they’ve also done some fancy fridges in the past.

Each item sees images by Silician artists that interpret their traditional folklore, whether these are fruits, lemons and cherries, or floral motifs and drawings of Mount Etna that are surrounded by ornamental friezes and decorative acanthus leaves — all done in eye-catching colours that we’ve seen before on D&G’s bags and festive baubles. Even if you can’t whip a luscious meal or bake a whole cake, at least show your kitchen some love by having these sitting pretty on the counter.

5. Moschino
HyperFocal: 0

Since we’re on the subject of quirky ware, you can’t get better than Moschino. Just look at their latest beauty release — the Moschino bear for an eyeshadow palette? Well, Jeremy Scott certainly isn’t afraid to be loud and bold in his design choices. Similarly out-there is this exclusive furniture collection of his, that, in conjunction with furniture designers Gufram, go big on reinterpreting Moschino icons as actual pieces you can place around your home. And they come supersized.
HyperFocal: 0 HyperFocal: 0

The Moschino kisses Gufram collection sees a Moschino Biker Bag as a cabinet, and high heels as shelving units, for your bungalow of a home, most likely. We also get a limited-edition sofa that’s in a fiery red design, a play on the Bocca icon, though now with an enlarged rock-and-roll zipper that runs down its middle, and ties it to the rest of the Moschino family. It’s hilarious, playful, and also larger-than-life, exactly how you want a Moschino house to be.

NYLON Team Picks: The Battle Of The Drugstore Eyeliners

The best eyeliners are found in the drugstore, for real!! Here’s a beauty rule you should live by: you never have to pay more than $25 to get yourself a solid liquid liner. Over time, we’ve tried plenty, and figured out which ones are better than the others.

Clio Sharp, So Simple Waterproof Pen Liner
$22.90, available at selected Watsons

clio sharp so simple

Clio’s Sharp, So Simple Waterproof Pen Liner is another of their sharp pen liner series that works really well for me. It sports a super slim sponge tip that creates fine lines as thin as 0.01 mm, which is even slimmer than the Kill Black series. Perfect for achieving a sharp and defined eyeline, and when it’s so slim, filling in between my lashes is so much more easier when I’m tight-lining, and I’ve more control over the thickness because it’s buildable.
Sometimes, when brands claim that their eyeliners are waterproof, it doesn’t translate into being smudge-proof. So when this was promoted as a non-smudging waterproof liner that’s water, sweat and oil-resistant, I immediately had to get my hands on it. Sadly, this is where it lost a point. While it does not fade at all and still appears very pigmented at the end of the day, the eyeliner does smudge a little on my eyes. Still, I’m mostly satisfied with it; plus the smudging only appears after 3 to 4 hours, and can be easily wiped off with a wet tissue. For the price you pay, I’d say it’s doing a fine job.

Almost all my initial makeup products came from the drugstore, but very few carried on with me to adulthood. This liner still manages to keep me coming back. Though I tend to go without eyeliner as of late, this is my go-to product when I’m looking for a bold, black definition. The 0.01 tip along with its rich formula makes for easy application, and I was hooked from the first time I purchased this as a teen in my pseudo-goth phase. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I found out about the relaunch, which now includes two new liners for all your various winged needs. Perfecting that cat’s eye has never been easier – another reason to continue remaining faithful.

KATE Tokyo Quick Eyeliner
$17, available at selected Watsons and Sasa stores
kate tokyo quick eyeliner

I’ve heard good things about KATE’s liquid eyeliners, and this has been lying around my desk for a while, so I thought, why not? Well. On the plus side, the felt pen tip looks exactly like a marker pen, which made it very easy to handle (great for beginners!) and to draw a thick, consistent line. That, however, can be an issue when you want to achieve an ultra fine line. What I wasn’t on board with was how light the black liquid turned out – it’s not as pigmented as my other eyeliners, and I had to go over the same stroke repeatedly to get a nice, even black; this tends to fade out over time too. To be fair, it does its job fuss-free and reliably – and quickly. If you’re looking for finer lines though, you might want to opt for their Super Sharp Liner instead.

K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo Real Lasting Eyeliner 24H Waterproof
$19.90, available at Watsons, Sasa, Guardian, BHG, Robinsons, John Little, Zalora, and beautycarousel.com.
k palette real lasting eyeliner

A few years ago, everyone saw this as the cult liquid eyeliner. It’s just like a day-long tattoo, like the name claims, said all the K-Palette believers. This was also around the time I was beginning to seriously rely on liquid liner, relying on it as my daily eye-enlarger so I wouldn’t constantly be asked why I was looking so tired. So did it live up to all the hype? What I can say about it is this: the brush applicator is ultra-thin, which is great for subtle lining, but not so great if you want more dramatic flicks. The pigment goes on evenly, but it’s far from the most pigmented – I would go so far to even call it dark grey, not black. Minus points for that, because I prefer my eyeliner to be super-black.
It really does last though, without any smudging. But something disturbs me a little when I remove it at the end of the day: despite a few wipes with a cotton pad soaked in micellar water, the eyeliner lives a faint bluish-green tinge on my lids. Yes, like a faded tattoo. Maybe K-Palette has taken this product name a bit too seriously. 🤔

This Tiong Bahru Restaurant Somehow Makes Gluten- and Dairy-Free Food Tasty: Review

Okay, we admit. We’ve always been skeptical of gluten- and dairy-free foods. Yeah, the health benefits are obvious; no one’s denying that. But frankly, all we care about is taste, and gluten- and dairy-free stuff didn’t exactly appeal to our foodie senses, till we tried Open Door Policy.

IMG_5114

Interior of Open Door Policy

The industrial-chic restaurant located in the heart of hipster enclave Tiong Bahru recently revamped its a la carte menu, with 15 new dishes that are surprise, surprise, completely gluten- and dairy- free.

Open Door Policy’s indoor edible garden

Expectations for the worst and a growling stomach later, we started our meal with an Avocado Jumbo Lump Crab Salad ($23), which sounded like a recipe for disaster to be honest. Thankfully, it was far from that. The avocado’s tart flavours meshed well with the sweet crab flesh, while the gluten-free bread was a delightfully crispy accompaniment.
Avocado Crab Salad

Avocado Jumbo Lump Crab Salad

So far, so good.
Our next starter was a Watercress Soup ($18), not the Chinese double-boiled one, mind you, although this tasted pretty similar, except that it came in a thick, viscous form. This time, the gluten-free bread at the side failed to shine – it was too doughy and not crisp enough, but the soup more than made up for things.
Watercress Soup 2

Watercress Soup

There was no disappointment however with the Warm Wasabi Greenpea Soup ($23). Its broth had a slightly floral flavour that was thick and sweet without being overwhelmingly cloying, while there was the tiniest hint of wasabi that teased the tongue, but not quite enough to send smoke through our nostrils.
The first real downer came with the Vitel Tone ($25) – sous vide veal loin served on gluten- and dairy-free bread, and slathered with tuna mayo, purple cabbage, and kale. First of all, the veal was dry and mushy, while portion-wise; it didn’t justify the price tag.

Thankfully, we had much better luck with the Roasted Pork Rack ($38). Each bite of this dish gave off a magnificent burst of flavour that left us wanting to come back for more. The pork was juicy, tender, and very well prepared. Its accoutrement of pineapple sauce was also a neat touch, as it balanced out the savoury flavours of the meat with a dash of sweetness.

Another great dish to try here is the Sous-vide Salmon ($32). Doused with miso, the silky smooth salmon was a joy to eat from first bite to last, and even its side of chilli daikon was extremely tasty, flowing with sweet juices from the get-go.

Other decent dishes from Open Door Policy’s new gluten- and dairy-free a la carte menu include the Vegetable Tempura Risotto ($25); which features rice flour battered okra, baby carrots, oyster mushroom, and broccoli served on risotto rice, as well as the Braised Veal Ossobuco ($32); tender veal on green pea risotto rice.

We suggest giving the Spaghetti Alle Vongole ($28) a miss though. There was nothing special about this dish at all, and it felt like a hastily put-together pasta that you could find pretty much anywhere else in Singapore.
As for desserts, do yourself a favour and go for both the Calamansi Chocolate Tart ($16) and the Dairy Free Apple Crumble ($16), both delicious menu items worth a try. The latter was especially impressive, not to mention, generous. The bowl it was served in was filled to the brim with chunks of sous-vide apple marinated in eight different spices – truly every apple lover’s dream.

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with what Open Door Policy put out, and despite a few hiccups, we could tell that there was a lot of hard work and thought put behind the dishes. That said; the food was a little too pricey for our liking, and we’re still not converted to gluten- and dairy-free lovers. If you’re looking for a alternative (and healthy) lunch spot however, you probably won’t go wrong over here.
