The Swatch Art Journey Collection Sees More Of The World’s Most Famous Artworks On Watch Faces

Fancy art on your wrist — that’s a concept that Swatch nails every time they debut a new collaboration with the world’s most renowned museums, a brilliant idea that transforms a functional, everyday object such as a watch into a literal piece of art.

Similar to last year’s series, the Swiss watchmaker reimagines iconic art pieces, from Botticelli to Lichtenstein, as part of the Swatch Art Journey collection of timepieces that take us through various moments in art history. Some of these are so recognisable that you don’t need to be an art major to namedrop their origins — take Roy Lichtenstein’s vibrant dotted pop art style for instance, or the famous Great Wave by Japanese artist Hokusai.

Swatch has partnered with museums and institutions such as MoMA, Fondation Magritte, Le Gallerie degli Uffizi and Louvre Abu Dhabi to give us GENT and NEW GENT silhouettes that playfully celebrate art on your wrist, across five capsule collections that will be released from mid-March all the way till May.

Ahead, we take you through the first four releases, comprising of 7 watches in total. The last release in the Swatch Art Journey collection will be unveiled at a later date.

WAVE 1 — Swatch x MoMA ; Swatch x Magritte

Swatch x MOMA — GIRL and REVERIE by ROY LICHTENSTEIN.

2023 marks the 100th anniversary of American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein’s birth, which is why MoMA decided to honour his legacy with this Swatch collaboration of two watches that feature his vivid comic-inspired style.

The first timepiece recreates ‘Girl’ (1963), where a smiling blonde woman is originally rendered in the artist’s signature Benday dots technique, and now featured on the watch against a striking electric-blue backdrop for high contrast. To keep it more interesting, most of the 41mm watch’s strap is in that same blue shade, though you’ll find more a surprise zoomed-in version of Lichtenstein’s art piece when you flip the watch around.

In a slightly smaller 34mm watch face is Swatch’s take on ‘Reverie’ (1965), which marked the artist’s inspiration of jazz music. The famous text on the artwork “The melody haunts my reverie” features on a pop-up speech bubble loop on the watch, while the timepiece also features a bright canary-yellow strap that takes after the woman’s blonde hair. Both the above watches’ cases are made with bio-sourced plastic.

The two Swatch x MoMA watches, $150 and $135 respectively, is now available in Swatch stores, on Swatch.com, at MoMA Design Stores and store.moma.org.

Swatch x Magritte — LE FILS DE L’HOMME and LA TRAHISON DES IMAGES by RENÉ MAGRITTE.

Next up, we’ve got Surrealist painter René Magritte, who’s known for incorporating symbols and self-portraits into his dreamlike aesthetic. ‘The Son of Man’ (1964), for instance, is a recognisable piece of self-portrait art that sees a man in a bowler hat, though with his face hidden behind a floating green apple. The Swatch watch faithfully recreates this image and muted colour palette, right down to the man’s suit across the strap.

A subtle beige-and-brown number depicts Magritte’s love for irony and wordplay, seen in ‘The Treachery of Images’ (1929), which features a pipe with the words “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“this is not a pipe”), that then challenges the viewer on their perception of the world. Swatch continues on this playful twist with the phrase, “Ceci n’est pas une pipe. Ceci est une Swatch.” (“This is not a pipe. This is a Swatch.”) across the watch strap.

The two Swatch x Magritte watches, $150 each, is now available in Swatch stores and on Swatch.com.

WAVE 2 — Swatch x LOUVRE ABU DHABI ; Swatch x LE GALLERIE DEGLI UFFIZI

Swatch x LOUVRE ABU DHABI — THE GREAT WAVE OFF KANAGAWA by KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI & THE ASTROLABE.

Swatch’s collaboration with Louvre Abu Dhabi combines the best of both worlds in one nautical-inspired timepiece — both the iconic Japanese artwork by Katsushika Hokusai, and the Astrolabe artefact by Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Battûtî are featured here in a unique cultural exchange.

First off, Hokusai’s most famous print, ‘Under the Wave off Kanagawa’, is featured on the dial and front side of the watch strap, of a close-up image of the cresting wave in Prussian blue tones.

Running with similar themes of oceans, navigation, and the night sky is Astrolabe, seen on the underside of the watch, a flat projection of a night sky and a marvel of the ancient times as it helps calculate the position of the stars while determining the exact time of day.

The Swatch x LOUVRE ABU DHABI watch will be available in Swatch stores and on SWATCH.COM from 13 April 2023.

Swatch x LE GALLERIE DEGLI UFFIZI — ALLEGORIA DELLA PRIMAVERA and NASCITA DI VENERE by SANDRO BOTTICELLI.

A fourth series transports us to Le Gallerie degli Uffizi in Italy, an art museum known for its rich archive of Renaissance paintings. Two mesmerising masterpieces by artist-of-the-era Sandro Botticelli feature here, starting with the joyous ‘Allegoria della Primavera’, or ‘Allegory of Spring’.

The Italian painter depicts Flora, goddess of flowers, adorned with her dress of cornflowers, violets, myrtle and more, while Cupid and other mythological figures make an appearance in this ode to nature. The watch is a celebration of nature as well, and combined with a translucent pink bezel for a modern touch.

Then, there’s Botticelli’s famous ‘Nascita di Venere’, or ‘The Birth of Venus’, where the watch dial sees the gods of winds, Zephyr and breeze, Aura, while Venus herself features on the strap, as beautiful as ever and complemented by romantic pastel hues with gold-coloured accents.

The two Swatch x LE GALLERIE DEGLI UFFIZI watches will be available in Swatch stores and on SWATCH.COM from 13 April 2023.

Osaka Castle.

If you’ll be in Osaka for a day or two, then the Osaka Amazing Pass is a must-get, simply because you’re entitled to great savings and includes entry to some of the most popular attractions around town!

The list of iconic landmarks is extensive, and includes the historical Osaka Castle, its museum and the surrounding gardens; the Osaka Tennoji Zoo; several of the city’s museums such as the National Museum of Art, Osaka; and the sprawling Nagai Botanical Gardens that’s filled with beautiful blooms. You might also want to ride a giant ferris wheel, or go on a cruise on the famous Tombori River.

2. Osaka Walking Tours & Food Tours

For an authentic way to make your way around Osaka, and experience that iconic Dotonbori canal and street like a local, you can always do a walking tour. Cover the best parts of Osaka in 3 hours, while walking through nostalgic areas with a local guide, and getting to indulge in Kushikatsu, a local delicacy of fried skewers. A picture at the Glico Running Man sign, albeit a little touristy, is definitely a highlight!

$70/adult. More information on the Osaka Walking Tour here

If you’re more of a foodie and would love to deep-dive into more local delights, opt for this Osaka Dotonbori Daytime Food Tour by Arigato Japan, which explores back alleys and small local shops — 4 in total! — along with a drink and traditional Japanese dessert. Being with a local guide takes a lot of the guesswork out of your day, especially with limited stomach space, while you get to eat like a local in a region known for being ‘Japan’s Kitchen’.

The 3-hour tour starts with a walk through the busy Dotonbori thoroughfares, before a detour to some lesser-known but amazing hidden finds, including a Michelin-rated street food stop that serves hot and piping Takoyaki, a place where you get to sample Kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), before settling down for lunch at an Izakaya where you can eat to your heart’s content. Having these places planned ahead of time also means you’ll save time on queuing!

3. Universal Studios Japan

Travelling with overactive kids, or perhaps you’re an adult with a wild imagination? A fun day out at Universal Studios Japan is sure to be as exciting as it can possibly get, and is a major reason why people travel to Osaka.

The world-class theme park is home to everything from thrilling roller coasters to dizzying teacup rides, and plays host to unique themed worlds such as Jurassic Park, Minion Park, and two of their most popular attractions, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the newly-opened Super Nintendo World. Anime fans would also appreciate the annual Universal Cool Japan event, running now till the start of July, which debuts rides from JUJUTSU KAISEN and SPY X FAMILY.

Pro tip: be sure to stay in a hotel as close to the theme park as possible (see our recommendation below), especially if you intend to cover Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Entering the park early will make it easier for you to enjoy them, since there are limited access quotas for these two popular zones.

4. Kimono Rental

Here’s an Instagram-worthy way to explore the city — put on your kimono and clogs, and head out! The kimono rental space at Wafuku Sakura is an experience in itself, as you get to choose from a wide selection of patterns and designs before getting dressed from head-to-toe, complete with your vest, sash, sash band, socks, shoes, and a cute little bag you can tout around.

5. Day trip to Kyoto — A Full Day Bus Tour OR Custom Kyoto Walking Tour

While in Osaka, many people make it a point to spend some time in Kyoto too, since it’s a speedy 15-minutes away via Shinkansen. If you love cultural sights, and just soaking in the slowed-down, zen-like atmosphere of a place, Kyoto, formerly the capital of Japan, has lots of imperial palaces and Shinto shrines that might be up your alley.

You can do a Full Day Bus Tour that conveniently brings one to all the highlights of the town, from the Golden Pavilion or ‘Kinkaku-ji’, one of the most famous UNESCO sites in Japan, to the calming bamboo groves of Arashiyama, and the Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its 10,000 bright vermillion torii gates. The tour further includes a trip to Nara, where one gets to enter the biggest wooden building on earth, the Todai-ji Temple, while also stopping by Nara Park to feed the world’s most polite deers.

$101/adult. More information on the Kyoto and Nara 1 Day Bus Tour here

Then again, we do understand if you’d prefer a more unhurried experience while on holiday. If a 1-day bus tour sounds too intimidating for you, try a custom walking tour once you’re in Kyoto, where you get to tailor your itinerary according to your interests. Here, you are paired with a private English-speaking guide for about 8 hours, while a team will assist you on preparing your itinerary and making all necessary bookings beforehand.

You may opt for popular sights such as Kinkaku-ji and Arashiyama, similar to the tour mentioned above, though there are other worthy places to explore when in Kyoto. Top-of-mind locations include the beautiful Kiyomizu-dera, or Pure Water Temple, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site; a walk through Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha district; and Nishiki Market, where you can find street food stores and small restaurants serving authentic Japanese fare.

3. At Kyoto — a charming ryokan

Hokkaikan Ohababo — Kyoto

Whether it’s your first time or nth time at Japan, a stay at a charming ryokan is a must! Hokkaikan Ohanabo is located in Central Kyoto, and just a 5-min walk from Kyoto Station, making it highly attractive if you’re considering a couple of nights in the country’s historic city. The ryokan experience is all about achieving a zen-like respite too, hence you’re welcome to a multi-course kaiseki meal that can be provided on the property, or a relaxing soak at their onsen.

Are Brompton foldable bikes worth the hype, and should you splurge on one? We test out the popular C-line to experience it for ourselves.

Remember back in 2020 when the COVID pandemic suddenly made Singaporeans want to get out of the house to exercise? And amidst our need for freedom, there was a cycling boom. One bicycle brand in particular stood out amongst the rest, and became highly sought-after to the point where they were constantly out of stock, and there was a long waiting list to purchase anything from them. That’s Brompton.

I first heard about Brompton from my circle of friends who were discussing where to get one, and that’s when I discovered more about foldable bikes. I soon had the impression that Brompton is a premium brand (with premium prices), and is considered trendy and cool. And for years, it’s been hard to get your hands on one at its proper retail price (not at a marked-up cost from resellers). But last year, Brompton ramped up their production to meet market demand, and since November 2022, you can waltz into Brompton’s official store at Funan to buy one off the shelf.

Above: all the many bikes on the shelves in brompton junction at funan.

This month, I try out one of the bikes from their most popular line — the C Line — to discover what the hype is all about. Is it worth its price? Read on.

PRICE

Yes I’m gonna start with Brompton bike prices; they’re not cheap. The C Line (the most affordable line available in Singapore) is priced from $2,480, while the T Line (which has an ultra-light titanium frame) retails from a whopping $7,465. These prices are a far cry from a folding bike you can pick up at Decathlon where prices are just a few hundred dollars. But very often in the case of technology, you get what you pay for, so Brompton’s may cost a pretty penny, but they surely come with the quality and experience you would expect at that price.

Above: the above c line bike retails at $3,070.

LOOKS

It’s undeniable that a Brompton is classy and will turn heads. All the lines have a similar build and are offered in a variety of colours — including special editions released from time to time. There’s also a certain iconic “British look” to the bike as well; the design hints of classic, vintage styling, while still appearing modern with its sleek curves. Here we have the C Line in a new Matcha Green powder-coated shade. I personally love the matte finish that will distress beautifully over time. Plus, no fingerprints!

Above: The brompton c line in matcha green is the latest colour to launch.

HANDLING

I probably haven’t ridden a bike in more than 20 years, and the ones I used to own were mountain bikes with standard-sized wheels (at least 26″). With a Brompton, the wheels are obviously smaller to accommodate the folding mechanism and for portability, and smaller wheels naturally feel instinctively less stable than its larger counterpart. The Brompton C Line was a lovely surprise the first time I took off; it’s nimble, easily controllable, and the 6 gears on this model shift effortlessly.

The smaller 16″ wheels actually allow a quicker and easier acceleration, while starting and stopping is also responsive. Also, I must say, this bike was truly built for cruising, because it takes very little effort to get going, and even less to maintain speed and velocity. I found myself having so much fun riding this “compact” bike, that I started carving out moments of my work day to go for a joy ride around the estate.

Above: bromptons don’t have kickstands. this is the bike in its “standing” position, which is a half fold.

There was an article I came across that mentioned it will take 50km to get used to the handling of a Brompton, but I got accustomed to it after five minutes of twists and turns (it’s different for everybody).

Above: there are 3 heights for the handlebars — Low (left), medium (right) and high (not pictured here). most first-time brompton users opt for the medium height handlebar because of its general comfort and versatility.

FOLD

Above: the brompton in its folded position, with included rack.

The Brompton fold is what every Brompton owner gets the bike for. It has three folding points on its frame, and collapses to an extremely compact fold, one that is just slightly larger than its wheels. The first few times you do it, it takes a bit of practice and figuring out; but once you get it, it becomes second nature and you’ll be flipping it open and closed like a pro.

Being able to fold into a compact package, it’s easy to fit a Brompton into even the smallest of car boots. For standard-sized sedans and bigger cars, you can fit two Bromptons inside the boot.

Above: The folded brompton in the car boot.

WORTH IT?

The Brompton is possibly the most iconic and popular folding bicycle on the market, which also means it has a high resale value. If you can afford one and you’ve been eyeing it for the longest time, go ahead and treat yourself. You’ll love it and be proud of riding it everywhere; and when the time comes to upgrade (eg. from a C Line to a P Line or T Line), they’ll definitely be someone out there who will take it off your hands for a reasonable price.

Even with folding points and a small frame, the bike feels robust; plus it’s light enough to carry onto buses and trains, which means it’ll take you further and you’ll get much use out of it. There’s 7 years warranty on the bike (you automatically get 2 years, but if you register it — which you should — you’ll get an additional 5 years of warranty), and this covers manufacturing and material defects. But then Brompton bikes are also said to last, so it’s unlikely anything is going to fail anytime soon if you use it the way it was meant to be used.

Above: i highly recommend installing the add-on rack on any brompton you get. this allows you to effortlessly push it along flat surfaces when in the folded position.

If you’re concerned about how it rides, there’s a saying that goes, “You don’t get Brompton until you get a Brompton.”

BY THE WAY

Brompton has an electric version of its popular C Line bike, and these are fitted with unique number plates, which will be registered in the owner’s name. But before you can buy one, you need to pass a mandatory online theory test from LTA. Many times, customers have visited the Brompton store at Funan to purchase an electric bike, only to realise they have to produce this theory test certificate first. You can read more about it on LTA’s website here. To sign up for the course and test, this is the link on Singapore Polytechnic’s website.

A Look At CHANEL’s Spring/Summer 2023 Bags, Shoes, And Accessories — Now Out In Boutiques

There’s a bit of old world grace in CHANEL’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection, dreamt up by Virginie Viard; she was inspired, in part, by Alain Resnais’ 1961 film, Last Year in Marienbad, along with the idea of freedom of movement, which explains bows on heels, feathers and sequins layered atop good old tweed, and flowy fabrics that grace the body.

Likened to a “free stroll through the fragments”, what we’re getting is a collage of the past and the present, where the sophisticated allure of the yesteryears is now done with CHANEL’s signature laidback ease — a vibe best embodied by campaign muse and house ambassador, Kristen Stewart.

“Kristen Stewart is the person who reminds me most of Gabrielle Chanel,” says Viard. “When I first met her in 2013, it was instant. I’ve always been fascinated by her face, her attitude… And she understands CHANEL clothing so well.” Whether in a raspberry pink tweed skirt suit, or in bow-topped shoes made edgy with fishnet detailing, she is a picture of effortless elegance, the kind of casualness we collectively yearn for.

Unveiled on the runway is also a whole new slew of bags and accessories, instantly recognisable thanks to house codes of quilted leather and familiar silhouettes, yet refreshed with new fabrications or new forms. Take the CHANEL 22 bag — its supple leather form now sees a mini size, updated with adjustable chain handles, as well as a long double chain and leather strap for crossbody wear.

Vanity cases arrive in pastel tweed and top handles, while a duo of heart-shaped clutches, in black and white, would make the cutest company when slung across the shoulder. The heart motif reappears on plush flap bags as metalwork surrounding the bags’ closures, while dark denim adorns the flap bag too, complete with rivets and denim-and-metal chains.

BIRKENSTOCK 1774 Is A Fresh New Tonal Take On Their Classic Sandals

You wouldn’t think these were orthopaedic shoes at all. BIRKENSTOCK has long paved the way for contemporary footwear that still honours their German craftsmanship and comfy-shoe roots, though we think they’ve outdone themselves in this latest collection.

BIRKENSTOCK 1774 introduces five icons — the Arizona, Tokio, Sylt, Florida and Mayari sandals — in a joyful new palette of bone, black, and pink, along with a suede blue inspired by the label’s first-ever insoles. The colours are punchy and fresh, and done in an entirely tonal style, with minimal hardware from strap to sole, which further highlights these elevated essentials.

The series is named after BIRKENSTOCK’s founding year, 1774, while putting forth fashionable pieces that play on colour and fabrication; these, in particular, are crafted with specially-developed colours and raw materials all sourced within Europe.

For the best of both worlds, each sandal is accompanied by the brand’s signature moulded footbed, now fully lined with premium leather, while each pair is also handcrafted in Germany to ensure the best quality possible. This also marks the first time they’re revamping the Mayari and Florida styles, essential pieces in their recognisable line.

[click on the images below to expand.]

The Florida arrives with three slender straps and custom buckles, while the Mayari’s triple-strap thong style is practical, comfortable and chic.

For peak Summer-style, look to the Sylt, made fun with soft padded leather over those oversized straps, though if you’re looking for more utilitarian vibes, the streetwear-chic Tokio will inspire with its closed-toe, clog-inspired style that’s wrapped in coloured nappa.

Then, there’s the Arizona, ever the classic heritage style, updated with expertly-sourced nappa leather from the upper to the footbed.

The BIRKENSTOCK 1774 styles will be released gradually throughout March, May, and June, with the Florida and Mayari dropping first on 20 March 2023.

The Sylt and Arizona will be available from 4 May; while Tokio will be available from 1 June 2023.

The world of skincare is ever-evolving, and here are the new formulas that we ought to know about, for the sake of good skin. We’re talking improved versions of already-great formulas, brightening serums based on quality ingredients and important new research, and more discoveries that further the anti-ageing cause. Here’s some essential reading before you make your way over to the nearest beauty counter.

3. SULWHASOO FIRST CARE ACTIVATING SERUM VI

Sulwhasoo’s bestselling First Care Activating Serum has enthralled the beauty world for generations, and this next iteration aims to be their best-ever formula yet. Meant to be a first-step serum, the formula combines traditional Asian wisdom with next-level technology, resulting in the Sulwhasoo Master Complex™ that’s further enhanced with Lyphanax™ ginseng, a specific ingredient that has undergone 500 hours of natural ripening for the best results.

This technical know-how comes off the back of nearly six decades of experience, while the surprisingly lightweight, fast-absorbing formula helps boost our skin’s ability to renew itself and strengthen the skin barrier. Looks-wise, we love its new housing of a glass bottle that mimics the lines of a white porcelain moon jar, now in lighter glass, and as refined as ever with the elegance of Korean aesthetics.

$125 (60ml), $170 (90ml). Available at all Sulwhasoo boutiques, counters and online

4. LANEIGE PERFECT RENEW 3X LINE

The newly-improved Laneige Perfect Renew 3X series, in sleek bottles of soft lavender and gold, looks nothing like its predecessor — surely, a clear signal of new beginnings. This one’s an age-preventive series made exclusively for women in their mid 20s to 30s as it targets skin dullness, its loss of elasticity, and early wrinkles. As with most k-beauty lines, there’s a Skin Refiner, or toner, Emulsion and a Cream with a buttery whipped texture for a full 4-step skincare regime.

The most innovative product in the line-up though has to be the Perfect Renew 3X Skin Serum. It dispenses three types of highly effective serums in just one pump, which provides a 1.51x stronger age-defying effect when used together. The three formulas are: a basel glow serum powered by RE.D Flavonoid for a youthful glow; a firming serum that contains a high 21.5% concentration of a Collagen Peptide Complex; and an anti-wrinkle serum that holds 3.5 million micro retinol capsules in a single drop.

$63 – $112. Available now at LANEIGE boutiques, counters and online, Shopee and Lazada, and Sephora.

5. SHISEIDO EUDERMINE ACTIVATING ESSENCE

The iconic Shiseido Eudermine lotion is the Japanese brand’s first-ever cosmetic product, first launched in 1897 and known affectionately as ‘Shiseido’s Red Water’, so no way are they skimping on the science and technology behind this one. Now called the Shiseido Eudermine Activating Essence, it boasts a new formula and packaging that’s recyclable and refillable!

This new lotion is formulated with Fermented Kefir Extract, originating from
northern Japanese Hokkaido brown rice, that renews skin, and Yuzu Extract for recharged moisture, on top of the original skin-conditioning brightening ingredient, 4MSK, based on ActiveRED Technology, that helps promote an active skin renewal cycle. What’s also unique is that it contains microparticles of oil, just 1/100 the size of emulsions, which makes it easier for the formula to sink deep into the skin and retain moisture for longer. At once refreshing on the skin, it also refreshes the complexion for more radiant, smoother, and hydrated skin.

$145 (145ml), and $122 (145ml) for the refill. Available at all Shiseido stores

6. LANCÔME RÉNERGIE H.C.F. TRIPLE SERUM

Lancôme’s new era of high-performing, anti-ageing skincare looks like this — the Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum, a new formula inspired by regenerative science, while combining three seemingly-incompatible major active ingredients into one formidable dose. Encased in a bottle design that divides each derm-active into separate air-tight chambers, it utilises a triple nozzle system where we get to dispense all three ingredients in one go.

And in case you’re wondering, here are the derm-actives we’ve yet to introduce. One, Hyaluronic Acid, an ingredient that absorbs 1000x its weight in water and well-loved for its skin-smoothening and plumping properties; C+Niacinamide, a combination of a Vitamin C derivative and Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) to combat dark spots and even skin tone; and Ferulic Acid, a powerful antioxidant that neutralises free radical damage and further strengthen the skin barrier. Lancôme has presented this trio to work in sync by carefully calibrating each active’s optimal concentrations, in an anti-ageing serum that aims to lift contours, fade wrinkles, and give us a visibly brighter skin tone.

$217 (50ml). Available at Lancôme counters, department stores, the Lancôme e-Boutique, and Lazada.

7. FRESH KOMBUCHA FACIAL TREATMENT ESSENCE

Everyone’s favourite fermented drink, in an essence? We were surprised too when Fresh first launched their Kombucha Facial Treatment Essence back in 2018, though we grew to love this anti-pollution essence after hearing more from Fresh’s founders, Lev and Alina. Fast-forward to today, and we’ve for a newly-upgraded liquid gold treatment that’s, well, fresher than before!

The antioxidant-rich, double-fermented formula better protects and visibly repairs skin from the harmful effects of environmental stressors, and is further enhanced with an advanced metabiotic ingredient that encourages our skin to increase its production of essential reparative enzymes that tailors to our individual skin needs, so it can be restored to a strong, healthy state. It further retains its already lightweight texture, which we’re told deeply penetrates 20+ surface layers for a much-needed skin boost.

$52 (50ml), $139 (150ml). Available at Fresh boutiques and online, and Sephora.

8. BENEFIT COSMETICS PORE CARE LINE

You might already be familiar with Benefit Cosmetic’s The POREfessional collection, which started from a makeup primer that’s designed to minimise the appearance of pores. Now, the beauty brand’s about to take that claim to new heights, with an entire skincare regime dedicated to smooth and better-looking skin.

The series sees six new products and one multi-tasking tool, an all-in-one mask wand, that’s gentle on skin and non-comedogenic, and created to make deep cleansing as fuss-free as possible. It includes Deep Retreat, a pore-clearing clay mask; Tight ‘N Toned, a pore-refining toning foam loaded with AHA and PHA; Speedy Smooth, a quick-smoothing pore mask; two kinds of cleansers of a foaming and cleansing oil variety; and Smooth Sip, a lightweight moisturiser.

$35 – $60. Available at Sephora stores and online

THE ONITSUKA Introduces Their First-Ever Capsule Collection, With Men’s Fashion Icon Nick Wooster

With his minimalist yet refreshingly utilitarian style, men’s fashion icon Nick Wooster is the perfect collaborator for THE ONITSUKA, a dress shoes line that’s itself a new contemporary take on Onitsuka Tiger’s sportswear history.

The line’s first-ever capsule collection, THE ONITSUKA × NICK WOOSTER, further pushes the Japanese brand towards the fashion arena, with sleek boots and brogues, as well as a bomber jacket and skirt pants, leading the series. It’s set to launch at THE ONITSUKA and Onitsuka Tiger stores in six countries (Japan, the U.S., the U.K., Italy, China, and Singapore) on March 17, 2023.

“When creating something, my approach is to complete a whole style first,” says Nick Wooster. “This capsule collection was constructed by combining a bomber jacket with skirt pants as the base.” The visionary also goes on to describe his minimalist colour palette — of white, black, and military green — which unifies the styles, and allows them to be mixed and matched for endless combinations.

While these may look like ordinary silhouettes, closer inspection unveils key details such as intentional dropped shoulders on the tops, cut for baggier fits, as well as simple yet effective three-dimensional pockets on the arms and chests of the apparel, even the t-shirts, to emphasise their utilitarian inspiration.

As for the shoes, we’ve got the BROGUE CHUKKA, an interesting intersection of formal brogue shoes and their stitching, now reinterpreted as mid-cut chukka boots. A pair of chunky WIGURVE consists of a classic derby upper and voluminous sole, done entirely in military green calf leather and EVA respectively, while there’s also the WIGURVE SIDE GORE BOOT, a chunky boot refined with fluid lines.

New brand to watch: Empire Massage Chairs, affordable luxury in the home

I met Dave recently at the Empire showroom in Kallang; he’s one of the co-founders of the company, a new local brand of massage chairs that appears to be all over Facebook now. It’s a clever brand name that alludes to their mission — to own a sizeable market share of whatever they’re in, and right now, it’s focused on slicing up the pie for massage chairs in Singapore. Also, who doesn’t want a massage chair in their home?

Brands like OSIM and Ogawa have been around for decades, monopolising the industry for years; but today, a quick search on Lazada or Shopee will show options that can be shipped direct from China, with many of them below the $1,000 mark. But there’s really nothing like seeing and trying out the real thing before you buy it (with warranty, no less), and at the Empire showroom, they keep it straightforward, with just two models to choose from.

Above: the two massage chair models available from EMPIRE.

The regular model is priced affordably at $1,399, and will give your body a full workout with compression airbags, leg reflexology, heat therapy and what the brand calls “Zero Gravity” (it feels like floating in space). The Pro model is what I’m excited about; it can track the body shape and size, and customise the massage accordingly.

Above: The Empire massage chair, $1,399.

Empire keeps their product offerings simple, so it’s uncomplicated to choose what you want. There are really only two models (at least at the moment), and they only come in one colour — a universal grey that’s pleasing to the eye, and will fit into any home discreetly.

Above: the control panel for selecting and customising your massage.

There’s a control panel that allows you to easily select the massage function you want, while showing you exactly what is going on and where.

Above: the head rest and shoulder airbags.

There are airbags throughout the massage chair, and these can be easily switched on or off from the control panel.

Above: arm airbags for compression.

The in-built leg massager has included airbags for leg compression, and a foot roller for the soles of your feet.

Above: the leg massager with airbags and a foot roller.

The Pro model, in particular, has added controls on the armrest, including a USB port for charging your phone.

Above: the armrest includes a usb port for charging your phone.

The styling of the massage chair is sleek with a premium finish. It’s also a fairly compact chair compared to many models from other competing brands.

above: the side of the chair has a premium and sleek look.

above: the back rest for the pro model.

above: the dimensions of the empire massage chair.

Does the chair feel good? It certainly does. If you’re looking for a more affordable, but reliable massage chair, the regular model will suit you well; if you want a more customised experience that will really make you feel pampered, fork out a bit more for the Pro model. It’s unlikely you’ll regret this purchase considering you’ll be using it every day for a long time to come.

Empire Massage Chair, $1,399 and PRO Massage Chair, $1,999, available online at empire.sg. CONTACT THEM to visit their showroom to try out the models for yourself.

The Bugaboo Fox 5 has the best suspension in any stroller yet, with a one-hand, one-second fold

It’s been a year since Bugaboo announced the Fox 3 — an all-purpose, go-anywhere stroller. It had a “fingertip-light” push that made it effortless to cart around even the heaviest toddler (up to 22kg), plus it had all the bells and whistles we’ve come to expect from Bugaboo prams. So just when we thought the Fox 3 was everything a stroller should be, along comes the Fox 5 — the ultimate all-terrain stroller with advanced suspension and manoeuvrability.

Above: The new Bugaboo Fox 5 with the gorgeous Astro Purple canopy.

This stroller is suitable for babies and kids aged 0-4 years old, has a fully convertible design from a bassinet to chair, and the child can be faced either way, toward you or toward the world.

Above: The 5-point shoulder harness is super soft and secure. All fabrics can also be removed and machine washed.

Above: the safety bar can be easily taken out and secured back.

What’s new and improved is the advanced four-wheel suspension that’s the best in any Bugaboo stroller — and arguably any stroller available today. The large, puncture-proof tyres are also ideal for any terrain (including grass, gravel and cobblestones), and together with the incredible suspension, it’s a bump-free, smooth ride for babies and kids. Turning is also a breeze — and effortless, like its predecessor. And because it moves so smoothly, you’ll be surprised at the small turning radius required to change direction.

Above: the tyres are puncture-proof, while the frame is fitted with advanced four-wheel suspension.

Another improved feature is the one-hand, one-second fold. The previous version required two hands to fold it down to a self-standing position. This model just needs the effort of one hold to push and pull on the  handlebar and button, to collapse and fold. And what’s incredible is that it’s not just simple to do, it’s really fast; after some practice, you’ll be folding this in one second and amazing everyone around you watching. The stroller also stands on its own, which is a very practical feature in any pram.

Above: folding the stroller to a self-standing position can be done with one hand on the handlebar.

Above: the bugaboo fox 5 folded into its self-standing position.

Like all Bugaboo strollers, the Fox 5 is available in several frame colours and a ton of fabric shades. It’s available for pre-order now on Motherswork and will launch in Singapore on 15 March 2023.

Bugaboo fox 5 complete set, $2,199 at motherswork.com.sg.

Why The CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet Lipstick Is An Essential For The Bold Lips Revival

If you’ve always loved the idea of a classic red lip, then you’ll be glad to know that bold, statement lips are back on the beauty radar. While it hasn’t, technically, gone away, you must have noticed how the world has been stowing away our high-key reds and plums in favour of nude, barely-there shades. Well, not anymore — and the CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet is right at the precipice of this revival.

Above: Photo courtesy Chanel

This latest lipstick formula is a new take on a house classic, in 20 rich hues meant to represent an essential shade range, while taking on various skin-flattering interpretations of red as well. To founder Gabrielle Chanel, the colour red speaks about power and freedom, bold concepts that she had in mind when creating the first CHANEL lipstick in 1924. These days, the iconic click of the elegant Rouge Allure is as coveted as a tweed jacket or one of their quilted leather handbags.

The Velvet’s formula is equal parts matte and luminous, perhaps an apt paradox for how the colour red is as bold as it is delicate, as radical as it is timeless, so that any multi-faceted wearer may express moods that range from subtle and natural to confident and sexy. These reds play on meticulously crafted tones and undertones to present hues such as a soft beige and rosewood to intense crimsons and deep wines.

Ultra-fine and highly-concentrated pigments make for intense and long-wearing colour, while pearly ones give a finish of velvety satin that’s full-coverage yet sensuous; and ever-elegant whether paired with a smokey eye, sleek cateye flick, or even worn on its own for a bold statement.

Ahead, five stunning looks created with our favourite shades of the Rouge Allure Velvet.

Sublimage Le Correcteur Yeux in 30, $162.
Stylo Sourcils Waterproof in 812, $65.
Poudre Universelle Libre in 30, $95.
Noir Allure in 10, $68.
Le Vernis in 943, $44.

This chic lipstick shade’s called ‘Mystérieuse’ for a reason. As the darkest shade in the collection, the deep wine hue is perfect if you’re looking to make a statement. We find that it’s best worn with minimalist eye makeup, quick flicks of eyeliner and mascara, as well as a clean base in order for the shade to stand out. No need for embellishments, it’s already doing the most on its own.

LOOK 2

Rouge Allure Velvet in 60 intemporelle, $62.
stylo yeux waterproof in 10, $40.

Now, you’d think a caramel beige hue like the ‘Intemporelle’ would be ideal for a clean, bright and simple makeup look. You wouldn’t be wrong. However, we love the idea of contrasting this rather safe shade with something bolder — even punk rock. Makeup artist Ginger Lynette went in for a graphic look, one with thick dashes of eyeliner across the lower lashline that adds definition and makes for some one-of-a-kind style.

LOOK 3

Rouge Allure Velvet in 58 rouge vie, $62.

joues contraste in 330, $82.

‘Rouge Vie’ is one of those warm reddish-brown tones that’ll flatter almost any complexion, and rather trendy at the moment if you’d like to venture out of nude tones into something slightly more daring, without rocking the boat. And here’s how we’d wear it: with a dash of champagne shimmer over the eyes, layered with a little bit of the lipstick for a pleasing monochrome look.

LOOK 4

Rouge Allure Velvet in 64 éternelle, $62.
above lipstick, used as blush.

The rose-brown ‘Éternelle’ is a subtle shade that still stands out in the lineup — it’s just nude enough for versatile looks, just rosy-pink enough for that pop of colour, and neither too light nor too dark for everyday situations. In other words, it’s a go-to shade. What’s less go-to though is how we’ve chosen to wear it here — which you can try if you’re looking to elevate your everyday makeup. Layer on the blush across the eyelids and top of the cheekbones for a fresh burst of colour, and remember to blend well so that it looks nice and soft. For the lips, dap on the lipstick instead for a just-bitten effect.

LOOK 5

Rouge Allure Velvet in 43 la favorite, $62.
le crayon lévres in 186, $36.

Simply paired with clear eye gloss, the light red ‘La Favorite’ has a slightly pink tone that looks great in all kinds of situations, whether paired with a crisp white shirt, or all smudged out at the end of a long day, all messy, imperfect, and somehow, still très chic.

We’re Eyeing This Upcoming FW23 Style — The Loewe Squeeze Bag

The Spring/Summer 2023 collections are currently rolling out in stores, but here’s something we can’t wait to carry — Loewe’s upcoming Squeeze Bag.

Part of the Fall/Winter collection that recently made its debut at Paris Fashion Week, the soft style is made with buttery leather and a squishy handle top that complements the bag’s crescent shape.

Then again, this isn’t a structured crescent style at all; Loewe does it in tactile leather that’s a little ruched at the top, which then creates natural folds down the rest of the bag. This is then accompanied by minimalist donut chain hardware. Another thing we love? That this is an oversized style, which then makes for effortless casual wear — as seen on the cool-girl runway.

Superga Presents A Starting Line-Up Of Pokémon-Inspired Sneakers, In Both Adult And Junior Styles

Pokémon trainers, anyone? This is a call to all aspiring Pokémon masters on the road to victory, you hardcore geeks, as well as those who’d love a pair of Pokémon-themed trainers. You’ve come to the right place. We’re here to share that Superga has just announced The Pokémon Collection, a starting line-up of 6 rubber-soled sneakers that feature Pikachu, Charmander and more.

This collaboration between the Italian sneaker brand and the beloved Pokémon franchise is also a family-friendly collection that caters to both the young and the young at heart. It’s set to hit Superga stores this week — on Friday, 10 March, at 11am.

The series debuts three unisex adult sneakers, each with a unique canvas upper and vividly-coloured rubber soles, as well as  three matching pairs of junior shoes with velcro straps that mirror the first three’s Pokémon-centric designs.

Three of Superga’s signature silhouettes are referenced here, namely the Superga 2750, Superga 2490, and the Superga Strap. Ahead, we take a closer look at their individual designs.

SUPERGA’S THE POKÉMON COLLECTION SNEAKERS

SUPERGA 2750 PIKACHU | $119.90

There’s never a Pokémon collection without Ash’s (arguably) favourite, Pikachu, who’s now the star of Superga’s just-as-iconic 2750 trainers. This is a clean design that sees Pikachu in various poses across the back of the white sneaker, complete with tonal white eyelets for a minimalist upper look; peek underneath though and you’ll find a dash of electric blue used on the shoe’s sole.

You may also opt to dress up these sneakers with four Poké Ball charms — the Friend Ball, Level Ball, Fast Ball and Lure Ball, which are necessities in any pro trainer’s toolkit.

SUPERGA 2490 POKÉMON TRAINER | $119.90

As for the other lace-up style, this one goes big on Poké Balls, with the red and white spheres standing out against a stark black backdrop. It is paired with a bright red base, while the silhouette calls for a chunky sole further emphasised by a bold black line, meant for the cool anti-minimalist.

SUPERGA 2750 STRAP PIKACHU AND FRIENDS | $119.90

A neutral-toned sandy grey number rounds off the trio, where the Superga 2750 Strap design features a bunch of popular Pokémon all lined up on the canvas upper. The next time you’re in need of company, know that Squirtle, Pikachu, Togepi, Bulbasaur, Meowth, Eevee, Jigglypuff and Charmander are here to walk every step of your next adventure. The shoes boast a cheery yellow sole too, with the word “Trainer” on the back tab — a detail that’s present across the entire collection.

THE JUNIOR RANGE

SUPERGA 2750 JUNIOR STRAP PIKACHU ; SUPERGA 2750 JUNIOR STRAP PIKACHU AND FRIENDS ; SUPERGA 2750 JUNIOR STRAP POKÉMON TRAINER | $89.90

The Pokémon Collection by Superga will launch 10 March 2023, 11am, at all Superga retail stores and The Pokémon Collection.

OPPO Unveils The New OPPO Find N2 Flip — Their Next Chapter Of Foldable Phones

In the competitive tech world, it is always important to stay ahead of the competition with new innovative smartphones that will change our day-to-day living. To begin their next chapter of foldable phones, OPPO has launched the OPPO Find N2 Flip ($1,299) which combines the largest cover screen (for clamshell models) with long-lasting battery life, better cameras, and SUPERVOOC flash charging so that you never have to worry about low battery. Here’s a closer look at the key features of the phone.

A LARGE COVER SCREEN

Measuring at 3.26-inches, the Find N2 Flip’s cover screen is the largest of any flip phone, making everything easier to do, especially since its vertical orientation allows the cover screen to display as many as six notifications in one view. This means that you can now reply to messages quickly in mainstream messenger apps, toggle settings, record a voice note, and answer a call without having to actually open the phone.

Besides the addition of useful widgets, the Find N2 Flip’s cover screen is also home to one of five interactive pets that you can choose to keep you company while you work. From playful Bitmoji to laugh-out-loud memes, you can set a GIF as your cover screen wallpaper too, in addition to the AOD (always-on display) that displays helpful insights such as the time, date, power status, and notifications.

Measuring at 7.45mm when opened, the Find N2 Flip is thin and light, with a micro-arc, and precision curved glass back cover that fits comfortably in the hand. The 6.8-inch E6 AMOLED display is also picture perfect with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio and smooth 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

A HIGH-TECH FLIP PHONE CAMERA

The Find N2 Flip’s flagship 50MP main camera features a large Sony IMX890 sensor with an f/1.8 lens, which allows you to use the Dual Preview function to see how you look when you are taking a photo or video using the rear camera. The 17:9 aspect ratio cover screen is also the same vertical orientation as the phone’s camera sensor, which reduces the cropping to a minimum for maximum detail.

Unlock even more creativity with FlexForm Mode which holds its position mid-fold between 45-degrees and 110-degrees for waist-level dynamic angles and 4K time-lapse video. You can choose to use the flip phone as a tripod-steady, hands-free camera too by placing the phone on a surface and then triggering the shutter release with an open palm gesture.

Co-developed with the legendary camera manufacturer Hasselblad, the Find N2 Flip is able to capture pro-grade colours, offer a fully featured Professional Mode, and use its unique XPAN mode to freeze time in a wide, cinematic frame.

TESTED FOR OVER 400,000 FOLDS

Much of what makes the Find N2 Flip incredible is the New Generation Flexion Hinge which gives you a robust folding gesture with an almost invisible crease. The hinge is more compact than ever, creating more space for a larger cover screen and a higher-capacity, faster-charging battery. Similar to the Find N and Find N2, there is no hinge gap when the Find N2 Flip is closed so that it can keep dust out and withstand up to 400,000 folds.

The New Generation Flexion Hinge guides the screen into the gentlest folding angle possible, creating a water drop-shaped fold that results in a significantly shallower, narrower crease than other similar models when unfolded. It also feels virtually imperceptible to the touch for an uncompromised flat-screen experience.

LONG-LASTING, FAST-CHARGING FLIP PHONE

Equipped with a massive 4,300mAh battery into its compact body alongside an optimised version of its flagship Dimensity 9000+ chipset which provides one more hour of video calling, two more hours of social media and five hours of music streaming.

The 44W SUPERVOOC fast-charging abilities is also able to take the battery from nearly empty to 50% in just 23 minutes and up to 100% in less than an hour.

AVAILABILITY AND PRICING

The OPPO Find N2 Flip is priced at $1,200 and is available for pre-order from now to 10 March 2023 at OPPO Concept Stores and online through the official stores on Amazon, iShopChangi, Lazada, Shopee, Qoo10, TikTok, and Challenger.

The phone will be available for sale islandwide from 11 March 2023. For more information, click here.

Secretlab Launches Harry Potter House SKINS For Your Gaming Chairs

The Wizarding World has looped back into mainstream pop culture again — not that it has ever left, if millennials had a choice — and it’s all thanks to a little role-playing video game called Hogwarts Legacy. Of course, “little” is a severe understatement here. The world, or at least our side of TikTok, has been obsessed with every single bit of the immersive, open-world experience, from magical robes that glow every time you cast a spell to showing off each house’s common rooms.

Whether you’re all about courage, ambition, intelligence or loyalty, gaming chair brand Secretlab has got just the thing. In the lead-up to Hogwarts House Pride Week on 20 March, they are launching a Harry Potter House Collection of Secretlab SKINS, a series of outer sleeves for your chair, each bearing the iconic crest and colours of each Hogwarts house.

The designs are an easy way to transform your new or existing Secretlab TITAN Evo chair into something that truly represents you — whether you see yourself in Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw.

Each SKIN is precisely mapped with a proprietary fitting system in order to match the curves of the chair, almost cloaking it in unrivalled form and fit, especially if we’re also considering its comfy SoftWeave® Plus fabric. A major plus? These are removable and machine-washable too for easy maintenance.

House crests go prominently on the front and back of the backrest sleeve, while the design is further accented with a checkered pattern, in house colours, on the side wings. Time to accio your fave then!

Secretlab Harry Potter House SKINS , $269 each, pre-order here. The first two waves of pre-orders will arrive in May and October respectively.

The Coolest New Stores And Flagship Boutiques To Look Out For When You’re Shopping In Town

Shopping has never been more exciting. From new-to-Singapore brands, largest-in-Southeast Asia flagship boutiques, and revamped concepts that prioritise new kinds of retail experiences, here’s a look at the cool new spaces that have impressed us in the last couple of months.

1. THE ONITSUKA™

THE ONITSUKA’s first-ever Southeast Asia flagship boutique is a sleek and sweet showstopper with its striking colour palette of black, white and red, which mirrors the edgy yet elegant style of the dress shoes that are on display.

The brand specialises in tastefully-done dress shoes, handcrafted in Japan by local craftsmen, and made with high-quality Japanese leathers such as Kobe leather. Distinct aesthetic details include an iconic ‘red line’ along the soles of the shoes, and a unique shark-toothed sole that’s both lightweight and durable, on key styles like the classic Bit Loafer and utilitarian Lace-Up Boot.

At #01-14A, ION Orchard.

2. Gentle Monster

Just right around the corner, get ready to enter the quirky world of cult-favourite Korean eyewear brand, Gentle Monster. The newly-revamped ION Orchard boutique bears a new concept, ‘Awakening’, via futuristic and larger-than-life artwork and video displays scattered throughout the spacious store.

In brilliant chrome finishes that contrast against vivid blue and orange, sculptures such as a giant ant and a robot imagine the fragmentation and reinterpretation of data, and “a new order of creation”, though you’re free to interpret them in your own way too. Of course, these are go alongside the brand’s famous eyewear, of bold acetate frames and just-as-futuristic silhouettes.

At #01-13, ION Orchard.

3. Acne Studios

Joining the line-up of stores at MBS is contemporary fashion label, Acne Studios, complete with what they’re calling a ‘minimalist tech’ aesthetic of glass and metal. A modular system of stark glass panels make for maximum visual impact, which then contrast against plush and tie-dyed beanbags, done in collaboration with furniture designer Max Lamb. Even the in-store mannequins are a work of art — these are custom-made by British sculptor Daniel Silver, casted and coated in a glossy black finish.

Head over to peruse through the Swedish brand’s SS23 collection, which imagines a wedding celebration done in their celebrated irreverent style; think soft fabrics and tulle paired with denim and leather. One of our coveted pieces though has to be the Musubi bag, an icon in various sizes, colours and finishes, and inspired by traditional Japanese obi sashes, hence the musubi knots on each side of the soft leather style.

At #B2-81 – 83, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

4. Swarovski

Swarovski recently unveiled their New Retail Landscape concept at their Paragon store, with the prominent use of blue, plush walls and metallic finishes, as well as octagonal product displays all over the fresh-looking space.

True to its name, the Discovery Table is where you get to pick up new jewellery and explore them up close, whether it’s examining pieces under a magnifying glass, or figuring out multiple ways to wear earrings and necklaces. We love the new bold direction that the jewellery brand has been on too; note the playful coloured crystals and oversized silhouettes here.

5. Christian Louboutin

For the feel of stepping into a luxurious holiday house, there’s the new Christian Louboutin boutique, filled with cosy wooden furniture, exotic plants, arches, and a plush red carpet that further add to the store’s homely effect. That iconic red accent, seen on the house’s signature red lacquered soles, is also carried over to the exterior of the store, thanks to a dramatic array of glossy red tiles that definitely warrants a second, or third, glance if you happen to be walking by.

Inviting arched windows give us a glimpse at what’s within as well; the first room is dedicated solely to women’s styles, so you’ll spot plenty of stilettos, pumps, boots and more, while there’s also boutique space set aside for the men, which houses everything from casual sneakers to upscale dress shoes.

6. Charles & Keith

Back in December, homegrown brand Charles & Keith gave us a look at their brand-new, refreshed boutique at Takashimaya Shopping Centre, a pleasing modern space that also boasts the brand’s first-ever in-store personalisation service. Let’s first talk aesthetics though. The clean, bright space is intentionally designed to highlight their contemporary-style bags and shoes, hence the choice of stainless steel fluted panels and flattering warm light.

Our favourite features have to be the set of feature tables that greet you at the store’s entrance, inspired by raw granite and its natural texture, along with a cosy little space circled by boucle couches that invites us to shop at a more leisurely, unhurried pace. The new personalisation space is a fun concept too, and allows us to add a more personal touch of embroidering names, initials, and small motifs on recycled polyester totes or dust bags, perfect as both keepsakes and gifts.

7. Levi’s®

There’s one major thing you need to know about Levi’s® largest store in Southeast Asia (well, two now) — the latest 3,400 sq ft space is home to our first Levi’s® Tailor Shop! Whether you’re looking to make simple length alterations, or want a fun way to customise a pair of jeans via embroidery and patches, this is the place to go to in order to let skilled Levi’s® Tailors work on your favourite denim pieces.

The boutique also incorporates the brand’s NextGen Indigo store design format, which pairs warm wood aesthetics with digital tools and LED screens that give customers a more informed shopping experience. Store-exclusives include an extensive range of Levi’s® premium collections, the Levi’s® Vintage Clothing that references archival designs from the past, and the Levi’s® Made & Crafted, which is where you’ll find their Made In Japan denim line that boasts the superior quality and craftsmanship of Japanese artisans. In short, this is where you’ll want to head to next if you appreciate good-quality denim.

8. Nespresso

Frequent users of Orchard Road’s shiny new TEL station would have noticed Nespresso‘s new flagship boutique by now, but here’s a brief introduction to their latest concept space.

The brand goes big on both immersive coffee experiences and sustainable design; a ‘Window to Farm’ installation, for instance, has us transported to a balcony that overlooks the serene landscape of a coffee farm, while Coffee Specialists are on hand to brew a cuppa by the bar, including a latte where you’ll see a motif of the ION Orchard boutique atop creamy foam. A soothing palette of rich coffee browns and crema-inspired golds are subtle nods to coffee and its origins, just as sleek lamps come inspired by those at actual coffee bean sorting tables.

On the sustainability front, we get textured table tops that are, interestingly, crafted with used coffee grounds from the Nespresso factory in Switzerland, alongside recycled aluminium shelves and wood that has been sourced from reforestation programmes. And finally, for a local touch, the boutique is also home to ‘Imaginary Orchids’, a colourful art piece by Chee Sau Fern of blooming orchids carefully handcrafted from used Nespresso coffee capsules — surely, a reminder that we can be just as creative when upcycling everyday objects.
