The One Famous Item You Have To Try From Each Of These Beauty Brands

Every beauty brand is famous for one, or a few products. These are the ones they tout as their “bestsellers”, their “must-trys”, their “cult products”.
Most of the time, they are known for these products for good reason – they’ve been proven to work well for most people, and not just because all the famous YouTubers and bloggers have been waving them in your face non-stop. These stuff, they’re truly good, so the brands don’t have to pay anyone to shout about them; the numerous honest reviews speak for themselves.
Below, a selection of some of our favourite brands across a wide price range, and the one product you simply have to try from each one.

lancome genifique
Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate Serum
$130, available at Lancôme counters.

It’s no secret that this is the product that Lancôme touts this at their number one, marketing it as the ultimate youth-preserving serum. The technology that powers it is definitely impressive, based on research on how genes affect skin ageing. What it does is just make skin look better in general, working on factors including texture, elasticity, radiance and clarity, with effects visible in a mere week.
This isn’t a product that belongs in just your mum’s skincare regime, though; one of the most impactful testimonies came from someone in her mid-20s, who has skin good enough to go foundation-free every day, all thanks to regular use of the Advanced Génifique, as she tells us.

ysl vernis a levres
YSL Beauté Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres
$51, available at YSL Beauté stores and counters. New shades available from July 2017.

Ah, you thought we were going to talk about the Touche Éclat, didn’t you? That one’s a cult item for sure, but we think the Vernis À Lèvres is a whole lot more fun, since it comes in so many different colours. What’s more impressive about it is its formula, a gloss that dries into a very even stain, that no other brand seems to have been able to achieve.
The line is getting a relaunch next month, with 3 new “Amplifier” shades that can be worn as top coats, or alone. Yellow brightens, blue darkens, and magenta adds a purplish hue. The classic Vernis À Lèvres, Pop Water and Vinyl Cream are getting 13 new shades in total as well.

hard formula
shu uemura Hard Formula
$33, available at shu uemura stores and counters.

This is one of the most superior eyebrow tools we’ve ever tried. Every makeup artist recommends it for good reason – it fills in brows incredibly naturally, and the colour never smudges or fades away. Basically, it’s impossible to get your brows wrong as long as you’re using this.

hypersharps
Maybelline Eyestudio Hypersharp Eyeliners
$21.90 to $23.90, available at Watsons, Guardian, Sasa, Fairprice and leading department stores.

We’ve said it a million times, but it bears repeating: the best liquid liners are found in the drugstores, and never have to cost more than $25. And one of the most established liner options within the drugstore aisles is Maybelline’s Eyestudio Hypersharp range, which has also been a NYLON favourite for some years now. Simply because it does its job: dispense an intense black that doesn’t fade or melt away, via a thin, easy-to-control tip.
The original’s the Hypersharp 0.01mm which has a brush applicator with a 0.01mm point, and the range has since expanded to include a Wing Liner version with a slightly thicker point to nail those eyeliner wings, and a Power Black version that dispenses an ultra-black pigment.

clinique
Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief
$75, available at Clinique counters and Sephora.

Gel-type moisturisers are always the better option in a climate like ours, and Clinique does theirs supremely well. It’s that kind of moisturiser that absorbs almost immediately and gives your skin that shiok plumped-up feeling.
The countless rave reviews it has gotten include testimonies of how this even works in harsh winters, impressive given that it is lightweight after all. Also very impressive: it’s suitable for oily, breakout-prone skin.

NARS Spring 2016 Color Collection Impassioned Blush - jpeg
NARS Blush
$50, available at the NARS store and counters.

Whenever we’re asked for a good blush recommendation, our answer is always NARS. Not just because the universally flattering Orgasm is one of the most famous blushes, ever, but because across all shades, the colour always goes on evenly and naturally.
Look past Orgasm, and you’ll find plenty of fantastic colour options spanning purple, red and orangey hues. For example, Impassioned, a pink orchid should you want to try a cooler-toned option.

play 101 blending
ETUDE HOUSE Play 101 Blending Pencil
$16.90, available at ETUDE HOUSE stores.

Meet what is probably ETUDE HOUSE’s most versatile product: the Play 101 Blending Pencil, which can be a eyeshadow, blush, and lip colour. The 25 shades span four different textures, creamy, jewel, velvet and jelly, so we’re all truly spoilt for choice. They’re pigmented, blend well, and last on the skin – and the colours, mostly soft shades like nudes, champagne and rose, really are gorgeous.

s1433440-main-zoom
Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer
$40, available at Sephora.

A “good concealer” can be a subjective thing, but Tarte’s Maracuja Creaseless Concealer is quite the popular choice because it provides quite significant coverage without being cakey, lasts long, and is good for the skin – “maracuja” is Portuguese for passionfruit, and is rich in essential fatty acids and Vitamin C to firm and brighten the skin.

Dior Addict Lip Glow in 006 Berry
Dior Addict Lip Glow
$47, available at the Dior Beauty store and counters.

We know of girls with severely dry lips who rely heavily on this. It’s pricey for a lip balm, but hey, it feels damn good on the lips. The colour-changing properties are a nice touch as well; the natural pink hue it leaves behind is the true my-lips-but-better kind of colour.

Luxury Sports Gear, Or How The Rich And Fancy Do Sports

Ever thought about what you’d spend on if you had an extra million dollars to spare? No doubt about it, we’d spring for the utterly frivolous, and here’s where it gets downright ridiculous: luxury sports gear. You see, the rich don’t just do sports, they do sports, and we’re not even talking about overpriced yoga gear. Somewhere out there, there’s a girl (other than a Kardashian) who owns a Chanel tennis racket, stamped with the classic double “C” logos, because come on, Wilsons are just too basic. Or a guy on the ski slopes with a Gucci ski mask strapped to his head, because god forbid sweaty ski rentals.
All that’s left for us normal folks to do is to admire, from afar, at the fine craftsmanship and stylish house codes that go into the making of these products, each from a storied luxury brand. From Chanel paddle boards, Coach baseball gloves, and most recently, Louis Vuitton and Hermès skateboards (we know, the irony), here are the best of them.

Chanel: Tennis Racket, Paddle Board, Beach Rackets

embed-soo-joo-chanel-surfboard-workout

Before the 2016 Métiers d’Art collection, model Soo Joo Park took a moment to commemorate the Parisian brand by balancing on a stand-up paddle board, that, with its classy and monochromatic design, oozed utter luxury. Gisele Bündchen also made the Chanel surfboard a coveted item, after riding the waves with one in a sensual ad for the Chanel No.5 perfume. Similarly, you might have noticed that the brand has been consistently pushing out sports items over the years: we’re witnessed tennis rackets in various colours since Chanel’s S/S 2008 show, or slung over the shoulders of Kris Jennner in a not-so-discreet logo-stamped bag, a gift from Kim K herself.
tennis_racket-sheet.png.fashionImg.veryhitennis_balls-sheet.png.fashionImg.veryhi

beach_rackets___balls-sheet.png.fashionImg.veryhipaddle_board-sheet.png.fashionImg.veryhi

This year, we’ve got more Chanel tennis rackets ($2,330), this time in clean white with a bright blue band that you don’t have to painstakingly wrap yourself; a matching tennis ball set ($590), also in pristine white instead of, ugh, fake carpet green, and complete with a leather case; as well as a pair of beach rackets ($5,090) and a matte black paddle board (POA).
Hermès: Skateboard
hermesskateboard

We’ve long admired the Hermès items that were made for display around the house — chess sets in rosewood and mahogany where each chess piece is fashioned from luxurious leather, or monogrammed towels that you just wanna casually leave slung on your chair — but they’re only worth it if you live in an expansive mansion with actual space to house things worth showing off. Wayne Manor, not his subterranean Batcave, you know what we mean? This skateboard’s a little different though.
Together with the leather bags, scarves and accessories of their Objets AW17 collection, we’ve now got an urban staple: the Hermès Skateboard in Cavalcadour printed Vosges maple. The house deems this new item a way of “reclaiming urban space as a playground”, so rather than the gritty designs you’ll usually see, the board comes to life with a Henri d’Origny design of intersecting coloured strips, printed to ensure that the pigments penetrate the wood for maximum longevity. Now you can hit the streets in absolute style.
Supreme x Louis Vuitton: Skate Decks
imagesarticle20170125sup18-780x520+2

You must have seen this by now. Hot behind the heels of the classy offerings from Hermès, is, of course, this skate deck from the massive Supreme x Louis Vuitton collaboration. The two iconic brands collided for a highly sought-after collection that sees a beautiful union, by way of the high fashion French house working seamlessly together with the skate-oriented cult street brand. Debuting at the Autumn/Winter 2017 runways early this year, and after months of rumours, it was a dream come true for street style mavens, especially those that love to mix high and low fashion. Can someone say #hypebeast?
And in a wild frenzy of shirts, bags and phone cases, we have to acknowledge that this skate deck, stamped all over with the signature Louis Vuitton monogram and with a matching trunk, had to be the most buzz-worthy of them all. Interestingly, actual skaters have lashed out against this unexpected collaboration, mainly because one of these fetches a hefty price tag that’s estimated to stand at US$54,500. Also, there have been gripes about how the once-rebellious skater label seems to have betrayed their roots with this foray into the elite crowd. Well, it’s at least more exciting than a clay brick right?
Gucci: Ski Mask
266709_J1691_9005_002_100_0000_Light-Ski-goggles-with-Gucci-logo-and-Web-detail

In a flurry of white snow, you obviously need an accessory that stands out — this Gucci ski mask (£120) should do the trick. Never mind that you’re still on the bunny slopes with a bunch of children, or just cautiously sliding down the slopes and fearing for your life, you’ve got style on your side. The biggest and most stylish stunt you can pull off are these sleek googles with an elastic band that’s reminiscent of the house’s classic designs, a sturdy pair that’ll have you heaving a sigh of relief because you don’t have to rent the used ones anymore. You certainly don’t wanna lose this on your next crash landing.
The Italian fashion house has been doing luxury sports equipment for years, since their surfboards hit the scene in 2001, so you know they’ll be adding a touch of class to this one too: a velvet hard case, available in a range of six jewel-toned colours and paired with a coordinated satin lining.
Coach: Baseball Collection
u2j8jltuntg8sewafpgt

You can expect a true-blue American brand to honour one of the country’s most popular pastimes: baseball, so true enough, luxury leather goods brand Coach went full-out, with an exclusive Father’s Day collection that sees baseballs, a limited edition Bleecker Baseball Bat (US$248), and a Bleecker Baseball Glove (US$348), alongside other Major League-inspired apparel, including tan varsity jackets (US$998) and wallets that mimicked the contrast stitching found in the sporting gear. All this makes even more sense when we take into account that the brand was actually inspired by the glovetanned leathers found on baseball gloves in the first place. Well, they sure knocked it out of the park, alright.
55700_blk_a0 55700_lck_a0

Most of the 2014 collection should be off the shelves by now, but you can still purchase one of these: a baseball-style paperweight ($65) that deserves a place on the desk of any sports fanatic.
Saint Laurent: Roller Skates
162418F127001_1

How can you not love these? This retro pair of roller skates from Saint Laurent are high on our ‘want not need’ lists, simply because they’re both high-top metallic sneakers and 80s-style wheeled skates at the same time. Yeah, we may scoff at the passing fad that are Heelys, but imagine cruising down East Coast Park in this; you’d definitely be the envy of many. This particular design, widely sold out even with a price tag of US$1,209, comes in quality grained metallic leather with star appliqués all over, making it the perfect balance of kitsch and luxury.
484213_GVO10_1000_A SGD2830 RM8560 THB75200 AUD2545

For a fresher design, you may look to these heels on wheels, part of the brand’s Fall Collection this year. There isn’t much info on how much the ‘Anja 100 Strassed Pump Rollers’ are priced at, but the glorious sight of the Anja stiletto heels, in luxurious velvet with crystal studs, make for a stunning conversation piece. We don’t know how you’re actually gonna balance in this, but high fashion does come with some sacrifice, right? You’ll figure it out.

We Like Opening Ceremony's Tote Bags More Than Balenciaga's

Balenciaga’s version of the 90 cent IKEA Frakta Bag might be fronting headlines everywhere when it first came out, but we think you might be an impulse buyer if you actually did get it. US$2,145 for a IKEA-lookalike bag? You need to join a focus group.
For those of you who would really like to own something similar to the Balenciaga Shopper Tote Bag but are sane enough to actually have some self-control, we found an alternative that is wayyyyy more affordable and probably looks better than the Balenciaga one.

Opening Ceremony updated their line of grocery bag-inspired totes with a new range of colours and sizes, including a dark blue glaze one which is not too far off from Balenciaga’s, and a plaid design number that pretty much resemble the ones you see at pasar-malams. The totes are made of a polypropylene material – heavy-duty yet lightweight, and features Opening Ceremony’s classic box logo patches along the front and back with white topstitching for a contrasting detail. As compared to the leather-made Balenciaga version, you won’t have to worry about scratches on the bag, and you can bring it along for grocery runs or to the beach since it’s waterproof. Price ranges from $29.90 for a Small Blue Glaze Tote Bag to $52.30 for Large Plaid Tote Bag. We can’t believe how tote bags could be so much more affordable either, if you get what we mean.

The One Beauty Product That Actually Looks Better When You Sweat

By now it should already be common knowledge for folks who wear a full face of makeup on the daily, on how to make them stay and last as long as possible. Admittedly, it’s inevitable that makeup will slide around, and/or disappear throughout the day, no matter how mattifying your primer is, or how long you drenched yourself in setting spray. Most of the time, the magic lies in the touch-ups.

via GIPHY

But for days when you just want to travel light, and there’s no space for a compact cushion, a kabuki brush, an eyeliner, mascara and your mini eyeshadow palette (had to refer to a colleague’s pouch to confirm that people actually carry that last one around). And that’s when you’d want to switch up your full-matte makeup regime to one that actually looks better as you go out and about your day — without needing to touch up.
Introducing the humble… cream blush.
We’ve always overlooked them, simply because there’s this common misconception that piling on cream products is likely to cause your face to look oilier and shinier during midday. That’s really far from the truth. The trick is to pick a lightweight formula and have it stippled around the apples of your cheeks. Or better yet, achieve a natural, rosy flush by dipping in with your good ol’ fingers. You’d also be pleased to know that not much product is required, and the blush will actually look better as you perspire lightly. We know, the only time facial sebum is welcomed.

NARS Matte Multiple
$60, available at the NARS store and counters

Folks with enlarged pores might want to try these matte options by NARS, which have absolutely no shimmer to them at all. But fret not, for they don’t fall flat on your skin, but rather, have a blend-able formula that still catches a teeny tiny bit of light so as to add depth and dimension. It possesses a silicone-like, velvety smooth consistency that when patted down wet, can sheer out to a very subtle looking flush. But when used dry, the product itself has an impressive colour payoff that can be used on the eyes and lips as well.

Make Up For Ever HD Cream Blush
$52, available at Sephora and sephora.sg

If you’re ever looking for a commendable cream to powder blush, this one by MUFE is a definite must try. The formula combines the blending prowess of a waxy cream that melts right into your skin, and also the smooth finish of a powder blush. And on top of that, the blush, no matter on top of or beneath powders, will not emphasise pores or uneven skin textures.

Revlon Insta-Blush
$25.90, available at selected Watsons and Guardian stores

Here’s a recent drugstore offering that we’re in love with these days: Revlon’s latest addition to their PhotoReady Insta-Fix Makeup line, the Insta-Blushes. The selection of shimmery satin hues feature some of the most popular hues like rose gold, coral candy and a unique berry red. These glide on smoothly, and easy blend out into your complexion with just fingers.

Tarte Cheek Stain
$49, available at Sephora and sephora.sg

What we particularly appreciate about this cheek stain (and really, any other Tarte offering), is the fact that the product comes with the brand’s proprietary t5 super fruit complex that delivers hydration and skin-restorative properties. So you can expect the blush to provide a radiant, healthy flush, just like when you just step out from a hot shower. Yay to makeup with skincare benefits!

3CE Creamy Cheek Stick
$34, available at Sephora and sephora.sg

Koreans aren’t one to shy away from bright blush hues — they love layering up shades of orange and baby pink right under the eyes, for an innocent bunny look. You don’t have to blush up at the same spots, but if you’re ever in the mood for candy-coloured rouge shades, 3CE is your one-stop. The Creamy Cheek Stick sets to a matte finish and layers up easy.

Jane Iredale In Touch Cream Blush
$37.50, available at sg.strawberrynet.com

The natural beauty selection by Jane Iredale has always earned rave reviews, simply because they work. Their cream to powder formula is specially formulated so that the product enhances the natural rosiness of your cheeks with a dewy flush of colour. It’s that one everyday product that you’ll reach out for day in and out.
3efa0c2c-79aa-4f63-99ed-350337515098
Laura Mercier Cream Cheek Colour
$42.43, available on lazada.sg

With a whopping 4.6/5 score on makeupalley.com, you can be sure that you’re paying for a quality cream blush from the very luxurious brand Laura Mercier. The product is very malleable, so it glides on your skin without dragging it, making it incredibly easy to work with. It applies on “translucent”, which we’re guessing equates to a very natural flush of colour on your cheeks. And you don’t have to worry about it emphasising pores, for it sets down to a velvety smooth finish.

Mattel Releases its Most Diverse Range of Barbie Dolls Yet

Say what you will about Barbie, but there’s no denying one thing about the iconic doll: she’s looked pretty much the same since 1959.
Thankfully, all that’s about to change with Mattel’s latest line-up of Barbie dolls, the company’s most diverse range of all time (we’re talking about more than just new clothing here by the way).

Mattel’s new line-up, titled Barbie’s Fashionistas collection, features 40 new dolls with seven body types, 11 skin tones, and 28 different hairstyles to look out for. It’s another step forward for the toy company regarding diversity, after Barbie was given different body types ranging from curvy to petite in January last year.

What’s even cooler about this new move though is that Barbie isn’t the only one getting a makeover. Ken himself is going to look very different. There’s cornrow Ken, geeky Ken, and uh…wait for it, a man bun Ken. Maybe that one should’ve been discussed at the Mattel office a little while longer huh?

Well, whatever. At least Barbie gets to rock new hairstyles like an afro, a partially shaved head, and blue hair. Besides, there’s no doubt that this new Fashionistas collection shows that Mattel is moving in the right direction, even if it’s taken them more than a few decades to do so. Better late than never we say.
If you want to get your hands on each fashionista, they’ll set you back a very reasonable price of US$9.99, so gathering the whole bunch shouldn’t prove to be too expensive. Each doll is available now at barbie.mattel.com.

Review: An Eyebrow Tint That Saves Your Time Without Messing Up Your Precious Brows

By Phyllis Guo
So, as an intern at NYLON, you get the opportunity to try out beauty products sent to the office once in awhile. I’m thinking foundations, lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes. Lo and behold, the very first product handed to me to review was an eyebrow tint. AN EYEBROW TINT. Can you hear the shatter of the glass mirror? If you have no idea what the fuss is all about, then obviously you don’t understand what’s it like to be born with sparse eyebrows. I mean, brows are sooooo important, I really don’t want to mess with them and end up looking like Shin-Chan. But, an intern gotta do what an intern gotta do and so, I reluctantly agreed to test it out. You’re welcome.
Side note: I was asked to try it out on a Wednesday, but I waited for another day just in case someone else in the office might just be miraculously looking for an eyebrow tint to try out. Nope. Not happening.
So let’s just get straight into it:
WHAT IS IT?

Screen Shot 2017-06-21 at 5.14.59 pm

The K-Palette 1-Day Tattoo Lasting Eyebrow Tint was what landed in my hands. I had the option to choose between Natural Brown and Mocha Brown, but there is an additional shade in Light Brown. Given that my hair colour is naturally brownish black, I went for the Mocha Brown shade. It states on the packaging that the tint lasts for a week before naturally fading off and it is advisable to avoid applying friction against the brow to ensure it lasts longer. It is also infused with moisturising beauty essences, namely hyaluronic acid, Swertia Japonica extract, Hydrolyzed Collagen and Hydrolyzed Silk.
APPLICATION
While I was apprehensive about trying the tint, a little part of me was actually pretty excited about it as well. If it turns out well, it might just be the end of my struggles trying to get both my brows to look the same. For comparison, this is how my sparse brows look without any brow product on:

Besides the tint itself, 2 types of eyebrow stencils are provided with every box purchased; the “cool” stencil is straight and has a slight arch while the “natural” one has an obvious arch which was more suited for me. However, both stencils were too long and I had to adjust them according to where my arches are. You could do without the help of the stencils, but I thought it would be more precise to follow a guide to make sure I get the same shapes on both sides.

The formula has a sticky-gooey consistency but it wasn’t anything uncomfortable. Personally, the application process was quite tedious as the stencils were not an exact fit for my brows as mentioned earlier. As a result, while manoeuvring the stencils about, some of the product got onto my hands and hair (don’t ask me why I didn’t have my hair tied up). But you can always use a wet wipe to make any changes before it dries and if you are not a klutz like me, it probably shouldn’t pose that much of a problem.

Amount-wise, I was being really cautious and light-handed about it. I applied about two thin layers over my brows but as you will see later, it is okay to be generous with the product to achieve darker-looking brows. Another point to note: if you are like me and prefer to have a gradation in colour, you might want to leave out the sprouts of your brows. You can always touch up a little bit with a brow pencil to get the natural brow gradation look. I applied the tint right before bedtime and decided to leave it on overnight, though you can remove it after two hours.
REMOVING THE TINT
Now, every single strand of brow hair is important to me. Instead of peeling it off, I just washed my face in the morning as usual, and it came off very easily. Although I don’t think the formula is sticky enough to pluck out any brow hair, I think it’s just faster to let the water loosen the stickiness and wash off everything at the same time.
RESULTS
As you can see from the pictures, the colour turnout is not very dark which works for me because right from the start, I knew for sure I am still going to do my brows during my makeup routine. On my fourth day with the tint on, you can see it has started fading away. On the sixth day, the ends are almost all faded away.

IMO, the tint worked out well for me. Perhaps I was expecting it to turn out bad, but in fact it made life easier for me. With the tint on, I had a rough idea of the shape of my brows and all I had to do was outline my brows to define the edges and touch up on the sprouts. It definitely saves me a lot of time drawing my brows in the morning and I could sleep in a little more (girls, I’m sure you all know how drawing brows can cause you to be late for work).
Also, I always hated heading out to run supermarket errands because I look so haggard without makeup on (I know no one in the neighbourhood really cares, but still), so the brow tint helps in framing my face and look a little made up. I would use it again just because I think it is such a time-saver since my brows are mostly pre-filled. Totally recommend it for lazy girls and girls who struggle to get both their brows right.

10 Natural Beauty Brands to Discover at Your Nearest Drugstore

If you fancy yourself a green beauty devotee, you would’ve noticed a rise in the presence of natural and organic beauty brands amongst mainstream Goliaths in-stores and online – a rather notable indication that our culture is evolving into one that pays the earth a little more attention. However, Sephora isn’t the only established beauty haven that’s welcomed these humble brands with open arms. Now, a drugstore isn’t exactly the first place you’d think to look, but if you’ve set foot into a Guardian or Watsons store recently, you’d find that a number of green beauty brands have actually found a (fingers crossed) permanent home there. So today, we’re charting the 10 natural beauty brands with products that’ll make excellent additions to your beauty routine.

This #SundayFunday #TreatYourself to glowing skin! #ReadyToGlow

A post shared by AHAVA (@ahava) on

AHAVA
Available at Guardian stores

You’re familiar with those beauty products that harness the power of the Dead Sea, right? Well, AHAVA’s practically a pioneer in that industry. It gathers healing minerals and nourishing ingredients directly from the Dead Sea to craft effective and luxurious skincare, bath, and body products, transforming your grimy bathroom into a relaxing spa. Although, you should really clean out your bathroom if it’s starting to look like a mud pit. Don’t be gross.

A’kin
Available at Guardian stores

A’kin’s philosophy is simple – akin (pun fully intended) to ours, actually. They formulate pure, fragrant skincare that’s enriched with botanical extracts, designed to nourish and pamper the skin. Back in 1987, the brand’s co-founder, Will Evans, noticed a gap in the market for effective natural beauty products and sought to create his own to fill it, and the rest is history.

From lip-gloss to lotions, Alba Botanica® has it all for the girl who needs it all. What are some of your faves?

A post shared by Alba Botanica (@albabotanica) on

Alba Botanica
Available at Watsons stores

If you can’t visit Hawaii anytime soon, let Alba Botanica’s products serve as an alternative way to experience the tropical island. The brand has a full range of natural, vegetarian products for your skin, hair, and body, and they’re packed with botanically-active ingredients that’ll nourish your entire being. We’re serious! Their formulations smell heavenly too, so we’re pretty confident that these will transport you to paradise in a whiff.

Avalon Organics
Available at Watsons stores

Combining their love for modern science and a deep reverence for our earth, the team behind Avalon Organics has thoughtfully curated beauty products from nature’s resources. The brand infuses key effective ingredients like lavender, rosehip, orange, and peppermint into their products to stimulate, calm, and hydrate. Our picks? Their haircare items we’re sure you’ve laid eyes on while perusing the aisle.

Derma-E
Available at Guardian stores

If you’re aching to uncover the secret behind famed YouTubers Alba Ramos and Marzia Bisognin‘s (Pewdiepie’s lady) unreal complexions, this brand is it. Derma-E has set high ethical standards for themselves so that they never budge on the quality, formulating their products with the most potent natural antioxidants and vitamins to deliver wholesome nutrients to the skin.

Ecotools
Available at Guardian & Watsons stores

Toss out all your makeup brushes (okay, maybe not), because you won’t be needing them anymore with Ecotools’ offerings. Sister duo Jen and Stacey Ramstedt are on a mission to make women look beautiful and feel good by keeping their eco-conscience clean. Their brush collection isn’t just environmentally friendly, they’re made with high-quality renewable bamboo, recycled materials that looks chic, and they’re affordable too – the best news for our wallets.

Essano
Available at Watsons

A couple of us here at NYLON are already fans of rosehip oil, which is what makes Essano such a great discovery. The brand’s star ingredient houses potent natural actives, powerful antioxidants and essential fatty acids, which makes it really effective on scars, stretch marks, and dehydrated complexions. Unexpected benefits? It balances out oily skin, reduces blemishes, and brightens dull, tired skin. Try them out and see for yourself.

The Herb Farm
Available at selected Watsons stores

Hailing from New Zealand, The Herb Farm prides itself on the fact that they’re products are made on-site with the purest ingredients harvested at their literal herb farm. I’ve had the privilege to speak to the lovely Sarah Cowan who’s the Managing Director of the beauty brand, and boy did I learn a thing or two about the process and practices that goes into crafting these products. Trust me, their ingredients lists have nothing to hide – just natural elements of the highest quality.

Sukin
Available at Guardian and Watsons stores

Now, Sukin is one that you probably already know and love. The Aussie beauty brand aims to provide “skincare that doesn’t cost the earth”, and that tagline is a pretty good indication of how serious they are about their formulations. Their aromatic lineup is one that’s not only easy on the wallet, it’s also made with ingredients that are naturally-sourced, cruelty-free, and vegan. Better yet, they’re 100% carbon neutral, biodegradable, and greywater safe.

Trilogy
Available at Watsons

Perhaps a brand that’s even more famed for its rosehip oil is Trilogy. Proving once again that the Kiwis really know natural beauty, Trilogy started out with 5 rosehip products that rapidly expanded to 40 thanks to a growing demand. The brand literally goes to the ends of the earth to locate nature’s most ingenious ingredients to create concentrated, effective formulations just for us. Don’t you feel special already?

The Sally Hansen x Crayola Collab Is What You'll Want For Nail Art Sessions

There’s really nothing quite like a Crayola update on beauty products; and that’s what we’re calling the effect that the childhood crayon label had with the couple of genius beauty collaborations that they’ve partaken in. The Crayola Update. See their very adorable collection earlier this year with Clinique’s famed Chubby Sticks, which they’ve revamped, with a huge dash of nostalgia, to form the very coveted (and limited edition) Chubby Lip Crayon Box.

And now, they’ve teamed up with Sally Hansen, our go-to nail polish brand for easy-to-do home manicures. We’ve seen the brand evolve; from their nondescript, humble drugstore offerings, to being one of the most sought-after and highly-rated brands for their innovative and long-lasting formulas. Just earlier in April, Sally Hansen dropped their Miracle Gel Rustic Charm collection, that comes in a whole bunch of peachy, terracotta tones which left us pretty impressed.
But this month, Sally Hansen took a drastic change in art direction (ha) — and the big collab with Crayola saw tons of brights, even borderline neon colours emerging from the line. It’s pretty much an ode to the vibrant hues of a nostalgic Crayola pack; the ones that thrill us to no end whenever we get the chance to crack into a new box of crayons, laid out in the colours of the rainbow.
Untitled-1

Check out the standout picks: Wild Strawberry, a vivid blue-based red; Carnation Pink, our favourite millennial pink option; Cerulean, a muted grey-blue hue; and Denim, a royal blue. Fans of Crayola might also want to indulge in Dandelion, a true bumblebee yellow that has been retired from the OG Crayola colour line-up. All these polishes come with matching caps and the signature Crayola squiggle, just to add that bit of child-like innocence vibes to the mix.
On top of it all, the polishes are formulated with Sally Hansen’s famed Insta-Dri 3-in-1 technology, which effectively means that each coat of nail polish will dry in 60 seconds flat, without the need for a base or top coat. Quick-drying polishes are always a favourite, and with Sally Hansen’s in the frontline, plus the coveted partnership with Crayola, we absolutely can’t wait to finger dip our nails in these childhood favourite colours.
The Sally Hansen x Crayola collection retails for US$5 each and will be sold in selected stores coming July 2017 in the States. Your best bet would be to employ a parcel forwarding service or Airfrov, to have your polishes brought into Singapore.

Bella Hadid, The Unexpected New Face Of NARS

It’s a collaboration that caught us by surprise, yet one that makes perfect sense at the same time. After a few consecutive seasons of working with faces like Charlotte Gainsbourg, Daria Strokous and Tilda Swinton, ones that veer a little off the beauty campaign beaten track, so to speak – for Fall, François Nars has decided to go with the much more mainstream option of Bella Hadid.

Fall 2017 Color Collection Campaign Image - jpeg

An unexpected decision, as we never really expected Nars to pick a face that has already been plastered on the campaigns of several other major brands like Dior, DKNY and Fendi, and one that is one of the most famous in the realm of social media. Yet, as we reviewed this image of Hadid styled in a 70s rock-and-roll style, showing off the muted metallics of the new makeup collection, we realise Nars has actually gotten it very right.

NARS Fall 2017 Color Collection Stylized Image - jpeg

And now, the colours themselves: as expected with a transition into Fall, they’ve become darker, most bearing a soft shimmer that evokes sultriness. It’s a rather compact collection this time round with just three Kohliners, two Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows, and one blush. The ones we’re already yearning for: the Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow in Titania, a metallic silver, the Kohliner in Sorrento, a rusty brown, and the Blissful Blush, a bold, shimmering raspberry.

10 Quirky Instagram Accounts That Will Intrigue You

Instagram can be quite overwhelming, especially when you see accounts with perfectly curated feeds, and people who obsess over the number of likes and followers they have. But Instagram can also be an eye-opener when you follow people that share their interests and knowledge to the community – and there are a ton of accounts out there, you just got to explore. Here are 10 Instagram accounts we found to be unexpectedly interesting; accounts that will probably make you stalk their feed till no end:
1. @mnmllymnml
Andrew Kim is the lead designer at Tesla Inc and right off the bat, you can tell his feed is very design-centric, maintaining a clean and minimalist theme. He and his wife own a blog in which they share futuristic design ideas of their own and write about experiences that left a strong impression on them. It is not a blog where they talk about what’s trending but really a creative space for them to explore their imagination. An example of a blog post they did was centered around the idea of an inconvenience store with only an inventory of eleven items. They even made a prototype of how it would look like. If you are into design and gaining insights on quirky ideas, definitely check out his Instagram account and blog.

2. @matiasprado
Matias Prado does illustrations of cute tiny human beings dressed in all sorts of colourful clothing and hats. It looks similar to Where’s Wally, just that you don’t have to strain your eyes looking for a striped-shirt boy. His illustrations were also seen on sneakers, like the Nike Air Force 1, and on bags too. He also has his own website where you can see more of his illustrations and buy some of his works.

3. @tomhoveyart
If you are someone who loves watching any baking-related shows, you would’ve heard of the Great British Bake Off series. And if you are a fan of the series, you will know that the show always features illustrations that bring all the contestants’ ideas to life. Behind all the beautiful and intricately detailed drawings is none other than Tom Hovey. On his Instagram account, you will see all his illustrations of food, mainly cakes, that looks just as mouth-watering as the real deal.

4. @hernalex_art
Alex uploads posts of his textile works that revolve around navigating through multiple identities, and cultural and gender expectations. His works usually feature silhouettes of the human body that’s made with contrasting fabrics while others are made of layers of textile. But behind each of his works lies a profound meaning that explores many different topics.

5. @hansulrichobrist
Hans Ulrich Obrist of the Serpentine Gallery in London is one of the world’s leading art curators. And so it comes as no surprise that his Instagram account is a curation of something really unique – handwritings of different people. While meeting with all sorts of creatives, ranging from artists, architects, writers, and even Yoko Ono and Kanye West, Hans Ulrich will have them handwrite something, which he will share with his followers. Scrolling through his feed, you will be intrigued by all the different handwritings and perhaps start appreciating writing again.

6. @nailsbymei
Recently featured on a previous post on nipple nails, Mei Kawajiri’s nailart always has something extra. Based in New York City, Kawajiri has created nails that feature industrial barbell piercings and heavily embellished ones which will make one wonder, how do you do things with those nails? But if it’s a creative space for her to express herself, why not?

7. @ccminifactory
This account is for the miniature fans out there. C+C Mini Factory takes pictures of miniatures placed in different backdrops and otherworldly environments and they share them on their Instagram account. Behind the quirky creations are Brooklyn-based artists Chelsea Cates and Quinn Corbin. You might even have seen their works without realising it, since they have collaborated with big brands like Starbucks and Mozilla Firefox.

8. @cheesecurlsofinstagram
Before popping a Cheetos into your mouth, take a look at it and see if it resembles anything. The creator behind this account has found Cheetos to resemble many things and even came up with background stories to boot. He also made sure none of the Cheetos nor the resulting photos were modified in any way. Taking story-telling to a different level, huh?

9. @davidchang
You’ve heard of the famed Momofuku Milk Bar and all the rave reviews about it. Well, the owner’s Instagram account won’t disappoint either. David Chang’s feed is filled with pictures of food, mostly succulent meats that’s glistening in oil, and we just wish he opened a store in Singapore. His account is definitely not recommended for those who are on a diet.

Best Johor Bahru Road Trip Destinations From Singapore

The great thing about living in Singapore is that it’s an international travel hub. Being located right smack in the middle of Southeast Asia makes travelling to countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam really easy, thanks to the affordable flight tickets and short travel times.
Sometimes though, it’s nice to just hop on a car and drive. We’re kind of limited to Malaysia in that sense, but that’s not really a bad thing. Our closest neighbours have everything from beautiful beaches to bustling shopping zones, with Johor Bahru (JB) the most convenient as a road-tripping destination.
Here, we list down the best places in JB for you to visit with a car (don’t worry, we’re not going to include City Square Mall or Komtar JBCC):
Senibong Cove – For a Gorgeous Sunset

If you’re planning to make the trip across the causeway, take some time off in the evening and take a leisurely drive down to Senibong Cove. The luxury property, which spans 208 acres across the picturesque Johor Strait, is a fantastic spot for catching the sunset, especially at the 50-berth marina that’s filled with yachts and waterside eateries.
Pasar Karat – For Second-hand Shopping

No trip to JB is complete without a visit to Pasar Karat, a second-hand flea market that sells all kinds of knick-knacks, from counterfeit clothing to even live animals (which we do not recommend buying unless you’re prepared to look after them). Driving here at night will be a problem though as roads will close around 7pm for the market to be set up. Park at City Square instead and take a 2-minute walk.
Desaru – For Ostriches and the Beach

A sleepy beach town on the east coast of Malaysia, Desaru is a popular spot amongst both locals and Singaporeans. If you’re thinking of taking a drive down, do yourself a favour and visit Ostrich Wonderland, a farm that educates the public on ostrich breeding. You can also either snorkel or even surf here but we recommend checking out the fireflies at the Sungei Lebam river. That’s one experience not to be missed!
Mersing – For the Kampong Life

Mersing is more popularly known as a stopover before reaching Tioman thanks to its busy jetty. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any gems here at all. For instance, seafood stalls open up every night near the bus station along the river, while the beaches at Air Papan or in the Penyabing area are nice and secluded. At the end of the day, it’s all about escaping the hustle and bustle of the city over here and enjoying the rustic, kampong life.

Holosexuals, Here's Your Updated List Of Holographic Highlighters

At this point in time we don’t really have much left to say about this one trend that has withstood the test of time, and the characteristically fleeting nature of fads — holosexuals, you guys ought to be proud of yourselves. What started off as a subtle glimmer of duo-chrome goodness has evolved to a full-blown beauty style that lovers and everyday folk alike are embracing. And the fact that brands have taken the effort to create products that cater to different levels of glow intensity is making us sparkle a little on the inside. And of course, a whole lot the outside.
Ahead, an updated version of the holographic highlighters we’re crushing on, like really hard, right now:

d6a13d67-4b2a-446f-ac71-0b38fc688a66
BH Cosmetics Blacklight Highlight Palette
$11.89 (sale price), available at bhcosmetics.com

The Blacklight Highlight palette first caught our eye because the colour selection looks pretty much similar to Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Aurora Glow Kit; we’re not gonna deny anything here. But peer closer and you’d see the difference — the one from BH doesn’t have as many peachy hues and has an overall slightly muted tone. But don’t look down on it just because of its charming wallet-friendly price, this guy here packs a punch of pigment; we’re already pining for that aqua shade to be on our cheekbones.
abh-aurora-glow-kit
Anastasia Beverly Hills Aurora Glow Kit
US$40, available at anastasiabeverlyhills.com

It doesn’t take much to guess that this masterpiece of a highlighting palette had inspiration drawn from the aurora borealis. The colour selection in here reflects the various tones and nuances that you’d see from an actual Northern Lights sighting, which explains the unconventional jade hue with a stunning turquoise reflect, or that sea-blue colour with an amethyst cast.
Lime-Crime-Hi-Lite-Mermaids-Palette
Lime Crime Hi-Lite Mermaid Trio Palette
US$38, available at limcrime.com

Lime Crime isn’t one to shy away from blinding highlights, so if you’re one for just a subtle kiss of holo goodness, this one might be a pass. But for everyone else who’s into an extreme glow, this one fits right up your cosmic alley. The colours in their latest Mermaid collection feature a sparkling trio of lavender, ivory and a sea foam blue-green. These colours (especially that aqua hue) seem to be the star of this season’s highlight inspo, and while Lime Crime already has two solid Hi-Lite palettes in their bag, this one might just be that winning touch for your inner mermaid.

42unCMN
Milk Makeup Holographic Stick in Mars
US$28, available at milkmakeup.com

Wew, it’s good time that Milk Makeup gave their cult-favourite Supernova Holographic Stick a sister, because Mars comes in a warmer, richer tone that’s likely to flatter folks with a yellower skin tone better. Fret not, there’s still a holo sheen to it — in fact, a gorgeous, prismatic lavender reflect — but this time round, paired with a peach base to balance things out.

po.17623
BECCA Light Chaser Highlighter
US$34, available at beccacosmetics.com (will be coming to local Sephora stores in Fall)

Oh, BECCA. Our hearts tremble a little each time we swatch on any (yes, any) of their pressed highlighters, because they not only are buttery smooth, but also versatile enough to create a subtle sheen, or a show-stopping glow. Their latest Light Chaser Highlighter collection is a kaleidoscopic selection of hues that reflect colour dimension when light hits, so you can expect some colour-changing magic to take place on your cheeks and eyes. We’re particularly interested in the Rose Quartz shade that flashes an ivory cream seashell hue.

NYX Duochromatic Illuminating Powder
$16, available at NYX stores.

There are tons of products that we love from NYX, but the brand probably outdid itself with the launch of their Duochromatic Illuminating Powder, which won the hearts of beauty junkies worldwide. It’s not hard to see why — the pigment is a solid 10/10, the duo-chrome effect is stunning, and everything’s at an attractive price point too. There really nothing to not love about the sparkly new line.

3605971553851_illuminizer_alt5 3605971553851_illuminizer_alt1
Naked Skin The Illuminizer Pressed Beauty Powder
$50, available at Urban Decay stores from June 22.

Folks who prefer their highlights to be a tad less attention-grabbing might want to divert their attention here, to Urban Decay’s new addition to the Naked Skin family: The Illuminizer Pressed Beauty Powder. Now, this might not be full holographic per se, but the product does contain pearlescent pigments that give the peachy base a subtle pinky-ivory reflect. When dusted on lightly, the powder is supposed to give you a radiant glow-from-within shine that’s rosy and healthy.

phxw8bpm8s2qbwe
Jeffree Star Cosmetics Skin Frost in Crystal Ball
US$29, available on jeffreestarcosmetics.com on June 24, 10am PST (June 25 1am SGT)

The upcoming Skin Frost releases by JSC are very, very tempting. He has a pale yellow shade called Summer Snow Cone that’s cute, but we are really more interested in Crystal Ball, an icy hue that reflects a baby blue cast as light hits it. This may seem really similar to his existing stellar-selling shade Ice Cold, but bear in mind Ice Cold is pretty much a solid shade, whereas Crystal Ball comes in a duo-chrome formula that really, is hardly a bad thing.

Here's Kim Kardashian's Take On Why Her Beauty Line Is Different From Kylie's

See, we told you Kim K’s gonna release something contour-related for her upcoming beauty line. Over the past week, the 36-year-old has finally revealed exactly what she has been working on and started previewing the products across all her social media platforms. The Crème Contour and Highlight kits are available in four separate shades to complement a variety of skin tones, ranging from Light to Deep Dark. Each kit comes with a dual-ended contour stick, a dual-ended highlighter that contains a matte and shimmer formula on each end, and a dual-ended blending brush and sponge, all for US$48.

While she made all these announcements, the internet was quick to accuse Kim of stepping into her sister, Kylie Jenner’s makeup territory. In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, she addressed the issue stating that the focus of her makeup line is totally different from that of Kylie Cosmetics. Although the products from both brands are produced by Seed Beauty (the parent company for Colourpop as well), it is pretty obvious when you take each brand’s target audience and age group as an indicator. Besides, Kylie is in the lip kit game and experiments with different lip colours and formulas, but Kim keeps it muted and is known for something else: contouring.
“A lot of my stuff is going to be for skin…[I’m] trying to mirror skin care with makeup. It’s going to be a different vibe; it’s not going to be a full colour cosmetics [range] with shadows and all of that to start.” Kim told WWD on the difference between her makeup line and her sister’s.

Crème Contour and Highlight Kits. Coming 6.21 to KKWBEAUTY.COM #KKWBEAUTY

A post shared by KKWBEAUTY (@kkwbeauty) on

Kim adds on: “I am older than Kylie. We definitely have a different audience. We do have a lot of similar things — but we aren’t doing the same products, so we won’t run into that overlap. We’re really cautious of that. We work together to make sure that we don’t overlap like that. Ultimately, I think once it launches and people see we are a really different brand, it will be able to coexist, but be so separate.”
The contour queen has released a 5-minutes long tutorial on the different ways you can use the kit and it’s free to watch on kimkardashianwest.com. In the video, Kim mentioned that the reason why she decided to first launch contour kits was due to the fact that she had no time to go full-on glam especially when she has to handle her kids, but contouring her face allows her to maintain her signature bronzy, glowy look without looking pale.

From the video, it seems the contour and highlighting kit proved to be very versatile, in which you can apply the products on several other areas besides the cheeks. In the tutorial, her makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic demonstrated to viewers that the formulas can also be applied on the lids to act as the base for eyeshadows or can even be applied alone. Since the contour sticks are of a crème formula, it can also be applied on the lips to achieve a monochromatic look. Kim also highlighted that she intentionally made the sticks have a fine oval point so it can reach hard-to-get places such as the lower lash line.

Three days to go! Crème Contour and Highlight Kits are coming to KKWBEAUTY.com 06.21 at 9am PST #KKWBEAUTY

And fret not, her products will probably take a longer time to sell out since she took into account what her audience will be like and the demand for it.
“We have a good model, and even from our lip kit, we have a really good general idea of what our customer is going to be like. We are definitely prepared for the demand.…I know they [Seed Beauty] do make a mass volume. It’s not like we’re making a small quantity and it’s selling out,” she told WWD.
So yes, we think these sisters can each have their own makeup line, because their offerings are completely different – and we are excited for beauty junkies’ reviews to start rolling in on how her Crème Contour and Highlight Kits fare.
KKW Beauty Crème Contour and Highlight Kits will be available on 21 June 2017, 9am PST (22 June 2017, 12am Singapore time) at kkwbeauty.com

Sephora's Fall Launches Are Coming

We recently attended Sephora’s Fall Press Day, where we didn’t even know where to rest our eyes, what with all the new makeup, skincare and hair items from the various brands laid out in full glory. Fall is usually the season when the brands release their most exciting launches for the year, so you should definitely be reserving the bulk of your beauty budget for the upcoming months. There are many, many exciting products coming up, but ahead, the ones we are the most excited about.
* All launch dates and prices TBC.

Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Lipsticks

too faced

We’re keeping very, very close tabs on the launch date for this one, because this new range includes THAT Unicorn Tears liquid gloss. This just launched in the US about a week ago, and people are getting themselves into a tizzy over the pastel blue/purple opalescence of this shade.
Don’t neglect the rest of the 15 shades, though – they’re all super-saturated colours coat the lips with a high-shine lacquer. Time to finally move on from the mattes, maybe?

Tarte Clay Stick Foundation

Yes, it’s coming!!! We’ve been excited about this since May, because this powder-to-liquid stick foundation comes loaded with the famed Amazonian clay, plus Vitamins C and E to feed the skin well while providing solid matte coverage.

Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick
Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick in My Icon Is

Here’s our confession: we’re super into this, mostly because of the packaging. This lipstick resembles a super fancy pen, and is the kind of makeup you’ll actually wish doesn’t last very long, just so you can keep whipping it out to do a touch up, and show it off at the same time. Hourglass assures us this satin formula is longwearing, however; there are a whopping 30 shades to choose from.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Under(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Eye Primer
Marc Jacobs Beauty Under(cover) Coconut Eye Primer

YAAS Marc Jacobs Beauty, keep expanding the Coconut range, please. The newest addition is this eye primer, that has a creamy consistency and that lush coconut scent. Silica spheres and bark extract absorb excess oil from the lids, and provide a blurring effect over the skin.

Zoeva The Basic Moment Collection
zoeva basic moment

We don’t mean that kind of “basic” in this case; these Zoeva palettes are really all about only the necessities that will help you save time. The 10 eyeshadow colours and 3 blushes are ones that are universally flattering and “eternally beautiful”. Zoeva palettes are really one of the most underrated – they’re gorgeous, have great colour payoff, and blend easily.

Blithe Anti-Polluaging Himalayan Pink Salt Cleansing Water
Blithe Anti-Polluaging Himalayan Pink Salt Cleansing Water

We’re certain “polluaging” isn’t a word, but what we’re also certain of is this: whatever’s in this pretty pink bottle smells heavenly, and we can’t wait to rub it all over our face. As the name implies, the main ingredient is Himalayan pink salt, good for soothing irritated skin. The texture’s slightly heavier than water, and feels like almost like an essence on the skin – the brand says this removes the need for rubbing off makeup from your skin.

Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Line
cicapair

Again, with the strange words: we’re not entirely sure how the word “Cicapair” came about, but this Dr. Jart+ line is made to soothe sensitive skin. The main ingredient is the extract of the Centella Asiatica plant, known as “tiger grass” in Korea because of how tigers supposedly rolled around on the plant to heal their wounds (cool story). The range is made up of a serum, cream, night cream mask, as well as a particularly interesting tinted moisturiser that changes colour from green to beige upon contact with the skin.
