You're Going To Be Rolling Your Eyes So Hard At These Excessively Expensive Fidget Spinners

Truth be told, we honestly have no idea how, why, and when fidget spinners even came into existence. They can get quite addictive, we’ll give them that — but when folks start decking theirs in opulent wares and up-selling their luxurious rendition of fidget spinners, that’s when playtime is over. We’ll gloss over the lowkey amusing factor when people play with the 99 cents version that can be bought off Qoo10, but anything else over-the-top is just… stupid. We mean, fads come and go — and trust us when we say that we see that happening every single day — and we’re sure in the near future fidget spinners are going to become as extinct as the Kendama. Yup, that Japanese toy with a stringed ball to a stand that you probably had to Google to refresh your memory.
Check out the excessively expensive (and not to mention, very unnecessary) fidget spinners that have been making their rounds in the Internet:

Kim K KIMOJI Daddy Money Fidget Spinner
US$15, available on kimoji.com

Ho, why are we not surprised. Kim’s (and her entire Kardashian-Jenner klan’s) impeccable ability to cash in on literally anything that’s trending is… an applaudable talent. Her version of a fidget spinner doesn’t even have the form of a conventional spinner, but instead comes in a dollar symbol with ‘daddy’ engraved in the middle, where your thumb is supposed to rest on. This fidget spinner, alongside other KIMOJI merch, is launched in commemoration of Father’s Day, too. But that’s all the happy vibes there is to the gadget; the cheapest shipping option to Singapore is US$18, on top of the US$15 retail price.

Zana Bayne Studded Leather Fidget Spinner
US$75, available on shop.zanabayne.com

We do love Zana Bayne’s quirky leather accessories, from the bottom of our hearts, but their fidget spinner offering is just a no-go. Do you really, really, really need a leather studded fidget spinner…..? At US$75? A price that we are more willing to pay for three quality lipsticks that we can use for a long, long time? We don’t for sure, but if you do — you’d be pleased to know that each spinner is encased in either smooth black California Latigo or vegetable tanned leather. The rivets along the perimeter of these spinners are hand set individually.
And just as a contrast with these rich-kid options, here’s a site that you can launch, to um, spin a fidget spinner virtually. You’re welcome.

Transform Into Your Favourite Characters Like Mario or Goku at Japan’s Largest VR Arcade

Video games have always been a great way for us to escape reality. But the line between the real world and fantasy is rapidly blurring thanks to technologies such as VR. Sitting in front of a flat screen telly with a bunch of your friends for gaming sessions now just seems a tad bit old school, if you know what we mean?
These days, it’s all about getting right in the thick of the action, and the only way to reaaally do that is via a VR headset, something you can do at Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc.’s brand new virtual reality arcade in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Wall Projection

Mock-up of the facility’s interior

The new facility, named the “VR ZONE SHINJUKU”, is slated to be the largest VR entertainment facility in all of Japan and will feature a medley of over 15 VR games, including Nintendo’s Mario Kart, and anime titles like Dragon Ball Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Ghost in the Shell. It will open its doors on Friday, July 14, 2017.

Games will be operated through a HTC Vive headset and arcade-style chairs, which will differ depending on the game you’re playing. According to a promotional video, it appears as if games like Dragon Ball Z only require motion controller wristbands to play and not the chairs. Who sits down and Kamehameha’s anyways?

More than just a fantasy playground for video game lovers though, this futuristic facility packs a series of non-VR activities like surviving from an expanding balloon in a locked cell and eating in a virtually simulated dining space. Guests can also interact with the building itself with a “Centre Tree” that looks like it belongs in an Avatar movie.

If all that sounds good to you, reservations are now open at vrzone-pic.com, with advance tickets costing 4,400 yen, which will allow you to play a total of four VR attractions. Those without reservations will have to fork up 800 yen for an entrance fee and an additional 1,200 yen per game.

Hello Kitty and Wonder Woman Join Forces For Special Collaboration

Is there any character more iconic than Hello Kitty at the moment? We think not.
After all, everyone’s favourite Japanese cat has been on watches, clothing, make-up, cafés, and even 711 cups. This time around however, the super cat is going full-blown super hero for a collab with Wonder Woman.

According to parent company Sanrio, this one-of-a-kind partnership will mark the first time that Hello Kitty has ever teamed with a non-Japanese character, and it’s all to celebrate the release of Wonder Woman in Japan on August 25, where fans will receive special merchandise after buying movie tickets (available since June 17).
There’s just one slight problem though. The items are obviously only available in Japan, which sucks for the rest of us around the world.
But…if you manage to somehow miraculously score these movie tickets, you’ll receive a rubber key-holder of Hello Kitty in full Amazonian gear or a reprint of the original 1941 DC Comic of when Wonder Woman first appeared.

That said, going through all this hassle might be worthwhile, this collaboration is truly unique at the end of the day. And who knows, Sanrio might just decide to be fair and release international versions of the merch. To find out, stick with us for more updates.

Kiehl’s Is Opening A BEAUTY PLAYGROUND In The Middle of ION Orchard!

By Adele Chan

Did you know that Kiehl’s started off as an apothecary in New York? That was 166 years ago (explains the white lab coats and skeleton hanging in store, doesn’t it?), Also, did you know that Kiehl’s is really generous with their samples? They have a “try before you buy” culture, which really puts the customer first. You can take home samples of products you’re interested in without having to buy anything (but of course, don’t abuse the system, because that’s not a nice thing to do).

A BEAUTY PLAYGROUND!!!

As part of the brand’s celebrations to honour their most popular and iconic products, Kiehl’s will be launching a BEAUTY PLAYGROUND at ION Orchard B4! “Beauty Playground” — two words that make my heart beat a little faster, and even more so when put together. It’s happening 1st to 9th July 2017, and will be Singapore’s first oversized, interactive beauty playground. You know you want to go there and play. And you’ll probably want to bring the kids too just because it sounds so awesome.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

We’ve been told that there will be fun activities that are themed around the brand’s bestselling products; such as:

— a Calendula SWING!
— a Vitamin C Boosting SLIDE!!
— an Ultra Hydration Cactus GARDEN!!!
— and a Buttersticks Lemon REFRESH ZONE!!!!

Also, this is the perfect chance to collect FREE SKINCARE SAMPLES that will be available at every station. Following which you can get your skin diagnosed by a Kiehl’s expert, and then take home an additional TRAVEL-SIZE skincare product that’s most suitable for your skin!

Here’s the map:

VALUE FOR MONEY SETS!

If you’re already a Kiehl’s fan, you’ll want to know that there will be special value sets exclusively available at the playground, and they include many of the brand’s iconic products (see below!).

There’s also a limited edition Mr. Bones recyclable tote bag that commemorates this special event. It’s cute:

Acne Studios x mytheresa Takes on the Musubi Bag

You know those brands that actually have the power to make you promise yourself to invest in a piece, when you get your very first paycheck? Think Chanel, with their distinct monochromatic packaging, and anything that comes in the iconic blue box from Tiffany & Co. Well, there’s also a relatively young brand that made it into that list, and that is none other than Acne Studios, known for their trademark covetable pink paper bags.

The Swedish brand, known for their simple and quality pieces, has teamed up with mytheresa, an online luxury fashion retailer, on an exclusive handbag collection. The collaboration takes on the brand’s signature accessory, the Musubi bag, which is inspired by the knot in a traditional Japanese obi sash. The collection features five handbags, with the classic model available in black, cognac and silver, and a larger shopper bag in either black or cognac. While instantly recognisable with its unique bow, the bags maintain its minimalist look and features white hand-stitching for extra details. The shopper bag is definitely one that has the qualities of an office bag that we all need – big and roomy, yet elegant and chic. We just can’t decide between the black or the cognac! Somebody help?

These Are The Prettiest Floral Sneakers Of The Season

The fact that floral sneakers (or really, just sneakers) will never go out of style on our island of eternal-summer is possibly the saving grace of the very sunny tropical climate that we have to deal with day in and out. For those who aren’t as crazy over the millennial pink offerings that we covered a couple of weeks back, we hope that this selection of floral fantasy styles is to your liking instead.

http---bae.hypebeast.com-files-2017-06-nike-air-zoom-strong-amp-1-1
Nike Air Zoom Strong AMP in Black/White
US$130, available on nike.com

The name of this pair of Nike’s doesn’t do it justice at all, because the moment you set eyes on this beauty, everything else pretty much pales in comparison. The sneaker is very much a triple black offering, but with a gothic floral accent that just adds that much more attitude to a pair of shoes. It’s sleek, it’s bold, it’s an art piece. The Air Zoom Strong AMP silhouette is meant for gymming, so you can expect a snug sock-like fit, cushion soles that enhance stability, and other features across the upper mid strap that will keep your feet locked in while you work out in style.
vans-classic-slip-on-dx
Vans Slip-On in Floral
$75.95, available at dressinn.com

It doesn’t matter that the classic slip-on, decked out in vintage-tinted florals came as a late spring surprise. Floral kicks will always be welcomed with open arms. The flora featured on the sneaker’s upper is similar to the ones found on Havana, Cuba — and there are equal parts flora and fauna. The sole is kept white so as to contrast against the hearty print, and the inside of the slip-on is lined with leather for a slip-proof wear.

Gucci Princetown New Flora Slippers
US$750, available at gucci.com

Okay, so this might not be a sneaker per se, but Gucci’s recent art direction — when translated onto actual apparel and accessories — is really too good to be missed out on. Their Princetown silhouette has been wildly popular among fashion gurus; it’s already a cult-classic — and this time round, a floral rendition that’ll make a great addition to our vintage stash. Plus, since the slippers are an ode to the weekends, Gucci has very cheekily sewn in a heart motif on the insole of the footwear, just so you remember to celebrate the weekend fun with them when you pop these out to a lazy Sunday brunch.
adidas_adi-ease_bb8472_navy_floral_1
adidas adi-Ease
US$60, available on sneakerpolitics.com

This pair of floral kicks is what we call girly with a twist. Featuring an majority-navy upper, the dark blue upper is peppered with vivid tangerine floral accents, alongside leaves in similar muted midnight tones. Everything else is kept simple; matching navy laces and a white sole to balance the heavy upper out.

Nike “Spring Garden” Pack
US$95-US$120, available on nike.com

This might very well be the treat that we need on a dreary Monday, since Nike’s “Spring Garden” Pack comes with not one, not two, but four of their most popular silhouettes, clad in true jungle floral vibes. These sneakers — namely the Air Max 90, the Roshe Two, the Internationalist and the Juvenate — have a predominantly upper black and green to begin with, but each style comes peppered with hints of colour from the florals, paving way for a sophisticated wild side. We mean, we could totally see this pair on a chic zookeeper. Or a fashionable gardener. You get us.

Vans Old Skool Botanical Customs
US$150, OOS on amac-customs.com

AMAC Customs makes some of the prettiest customs we’ve ever seen. Just take a peek at their not-so-recent artwork; the Botanical pack that features Vans’ classic Old Skool silhouette with light pink embroidery blossoms along the edges and tip of the footwear. It’s pretty evident that pink florals have done well this season, considering how AMAC Customs managed to sell out of their stock. But fret not, there are always resellers galore — if not, this might be your new DIY project to pursue over the weekend.

IKEA Is A Genius For Coming Up With The Easy Recipe Series Cookbook

Can’t cook to save your own life? IKEA’s Easy Recipe Series cookbook is here to save the day. Yeap, everyone’s favourite furniture store is actually doing that. We think it’s an idea that should’ve long existed. Just think about it. IKEA’s known for their do-it-yourself mantra and their instantly recognisable, maybe not-so-easy to follow manuals that comes with the furniture. We also know that their food department isn’t lacking behind: their glorious meatballs and fried chicken wings? Uh-huh. So we know they have a thing or two when it comes to whipping up something delish. Combine these two aspects and you get the Cook This Page illustrated recipes.

Screen Shot 2017-06-19 at 12.58.03 pm

The foolproof recipes (which includes garlic shrimp, baked lemon salmon and raspberry rhubarb dessert) come as part of an IKEA Kitchen event in Canada, in partnership with Toronto-based marketing company, Leo Burnett. What’s interesting about the cookbook series is that the recipes are not presented in your usual long ambiguous text of instructions that really does not make cooking any more fun. Instead, each ingredient is drawn to scale on a parchment paper with edible ink that resembles a paint by numbers colouring book, except you do it with food! After laying out all the necessary ingredients, IKEA Canada made it seem really easy in their video, in which they simply wrap everything up and throw it in the oven. Well, we are not sure if cooking could be THAT simple (don’t you have to mix everything to get them to marinate evenly?) but it’s probably THAT simple because the end result looks amazing.

This innovative recipe cookbook is great for beginner cooks to try their hands at cooking and actually come up with something legit to eat. It’s also a great hands-on activity for parents to try out with their kids, and the best part? You can eat off the tray if you want. There’s really not much dishes involved here which is perfect for people who live alone and really can’t be bothered with the dishes.

ikea enjoy

Unfortunately, the Easy Recipe Series cookbook seemed to be a limited-time promotion offered only at IKEA Canada but since the concept received positive response (come on, it’s a genius idea), hopefully IKEA will roll it out worldwide so that everybody can be their own chef. We can’t wait!

The Fastest Way To Clean Your BeautyBlender Is To Microwave It

Pre-bedtime Internet surfing can really change lives. And I say this with a 101% commitment, because just last night at 12am, I did what everyone should be doing — I microwaved my BeautyBlender.
Also yes, in case you were wondering, nothing exploded, and I hadn’t gone mad from the pre-Monday morning dread. What happened was this piece of vital information on Popsugar that appealed so much to my lazy self — I actually pulled myself out of bed (how ironic) at odd hours of the night to try it out.

Screen Shot 2017-06-19 at 12.04.49 PM
link

As you all might have already guessed it, the article was a BeautyBlender cleaning hack, courtesy of Twitter user @2chiinzzz. Now, if you knew me personally, you’d know that I love hacks. Anything to make my (makeup) life easier. And if you’ve seen my vanity kit, you’d probably be all grossed out at the sight of my trusty BeautyBlender, because I haven’t got down to washing it in a month (or maybe two, I don’t even remember) just because…… cleaning my beauty tools is a massive chore and I’d rather snooze my Sunday afternoon away. Privileged human being with major first world problems, I know.
(In my defence, it takes incredibly long to fully get rid of all the gunk that’s inside a beauty sponge. Those of you who use BeautyBlenders, please step forth to take my side.)
Screen Shot 2017-06-19 at 12.03.46 PM
link

But anyway, the hack seemed pretty easy enough for me to get on board with, and it also helped that the Twitter community responded pretty positively to it. So here goes:
collage copy
L-R: prep, before putting cup into microwave, after one minute of microwaving, after rinsing off

1. Pop BeautyBlender into a microwavable cup with dishwashing liquid / sponge cleaner
2. Microwave cup for one minute
3. Remove cup and let BeautyBlender cool before wringing any water out
4. Spend a couple of seconds marvelling at the amount of foundation gunk from your sponge that’s now transferred to the water in the cup
5. Do another round of quick rinse with dishwashing liquid / sponge cleaner
6. Gawk at your cleaned BeautyBlender. It’s like a whole new world.
Bottom line is: The. Hack. Works!!! I made the mistake of being overly enthusiastic in wringing the water out of the sponge immediately and might have scalded myself slightly, but boy, you have no idea how crazy satisfying it is to see everything squeezed out. Granted that it didn’t remove every single bit of foundation, it did a pretty darn impressive job of ridding at least 80% of whatever that was on my sponge. Mind you, I use my sponge every single day without fail, and for a minute-long hack to effectively remove the sh*t that was accumulated in however long that I’ve failed to clean my Blender, it’s amazing. The remaining gunk took me a breezy minute to manually remove as well too.

And just to answer a few queries that my colleagues posed during our meeting where I very excitedly exclaimed this new discovery:
Does the sponge still feel soft to the touch?
Yes it does. Nothing about the texture changed, but I can’t say the same if you used a dishwashing liquid instead of a sponge cleaning detergent. Do yourself a favour and get the very affordable and effective from from Daiso at just $2!
Did anything melt?
Rest assured that nothing melted. I just used my sponge this morning and all is fine.
How long is the recommended time to microwave?
I popped mine in for a good one minute. You can always try anything from 30-45 seconds too; what the heat does is to force all the gunk out while sterilising the sponge.
Can I microwave brushes?
Um, not recommended. Brushes have that metal component to them and you can’t microwave metal! This is what will cause an explosion.
Any other things that I can microwave?
Popcorn! And perhaps makeup remover gloves and tanning mitts. The cushions found in BB cushions should be safe too. Anything without metal.

The J.W. Anderson x Converse Collaboration Has Been Unveiled

If you are still keeping your worn-out All-Star converse sneaks in your shoe rack and can’t bear to throw them away, well perhaps it’s time to get a new one, because J.W. Anderson is reinventing this classic pair that comes with some extra spark. Showcasing his Spring/Summer 2018 menswear collection in Florence, Italy, Anderson also debuted his collaboration with Converse at the Pitti Uomo runway. According to Business of Fashion, the partnership comes as part of a new approach for the brand to focus on scale and collaborations with bigger brands that have much more extensive distribution and retail networks. Earlier in March, he announced that he will be working on a collection with Uniqlo which should be launching later this year.
“Converse or Uniqlo serve an incredible purpose to me. They are universal and I would love J.W. Anderson to be that universal, but we don’t have that [production] volume.”

The collection features Anderson’s take on the classic Chuck Taylors as well as the Thunderbolt Ultra, which will be of a unisex cut. The first iteration of the collaboration will centre around the concept of “day to night”, and will feature wave detailing, the J.W. Anderson branding and a bright colour palette, which includes a stand-out glittery All Stars pair, which in our opinion, is the highlight of the entire sneaker collection.
Anderson adds on: “From my very first pair, Converse have represented such a radical movement in style and culture. The contrasts and similarities between the world of Converse and the world of J.W.Anderson creates a space of culture tension that’s a dream to play within as a designer.”

Converse has been rather tight-lipped about the details of the collection and all we know is that it will only be launching in early 2018. But with two major collabs with two big brand names, we are excited to know what other brands Anderson will team up with in the future. Meanwhile, watch this space and keep a look out for further updates.

Here's Why The Inokim Mini Is The Travel Solution For Lazy Folks

So, if you’re anything like us — couch potatoes and proud — you’d be familiar with the prickling frustration of… having to head downstairs to run an urgent errand, when you’re all nestled up on the sofa with Netflix and chips. Seriously, we’ve considered hopping on an Uber to the MRT station (that’s just a quick seven-minute walk away) to satisfy our lingering craving for bubble tea. Lazy folks like us have such first world problems, really. But here’s where things change. No, we didn’t decide to become more spontaneous; we just found ourselves a brilliant short-distance travelling option in an e-scooter. Namely, the Inokim Mini. And suddenly, takeaway dinner duty doesn’t seem that big of a chore anymore.

AI9A0858

Coming in at a competitive weight of 8.5kg, the scooter is specially designed to be a lightweight and portable “last mile solution”, where it saves you from doing the legwork for short distance travel. Every feature of the Mini is kept compact and user-friendly, as a quick example — built in trolley wheels — so that you can easily wheel your scooter around, even on public transport.
inokim mini blk and white
inokim mini white

Then there’s also the 6-inch pneumatic front tyre and rubber rear one that’s able to roll past bumps, and potholes smoothly, so you can whizz down the streets without the worry of sudden jerks and halts. And while we’re on the topic of cruising, the Mini employs a button throttle instead of a thumb one, so it’s clear and simple to increase or decrease speed accordingly.
AI9A0405

And those really are just the technical features to the scooter. What it truly does, is provide you with a whole new level of convenience and fun — and honestly, you can’t really put a price on things like those. With the Inokim Mini, walking seems almost overrated.
$599 for Inokim Mini, $749 for Inokim Mini+. All e-scooters available at the Falcon P.E.V main showroom at 2 Alexandra Road, #06-06 Delta House, open Mondays to Saturdays, 10am to 7pm. Also available online on falconpev.com.sg.

Before you scoot off, there are still crucial safety pointers to note, as well as things that you shouldn’t do when cruising on your scooter. These are important, so it’s highly advisable that you keep them in mind.
THINGS TO TAKE NOTE OF:
– It is illegal for PEVs to travel on the road. Do not do it.
– The speed limit when travelling on PEVs is 15km/h on pavements. Do watch your speed, especially when cruising downhill.
– The pavements belong to pedestrians, so be courteous when cruising with them around.
THINGS NOT TO DO:
– It’s best to not be plugged in when cruising on your PEV. You’ll need to be able to hear the ringing bell of bicycles coming from behind you, as well as be alert to whether your own scooter bell is working to warn pedestrians in front of you.
– Do not wear long, flowy dresses that can get caught in the wheels! That’s an accident waiting to happen.
– It’s best to wear track shoes when cruising on your PEV. Closed-toed footwear with rubber soles are the best types to sport because they grip the pavement of the scooter well. Avoid sandals and flip-flops.

The Leg Contour Trend Is For Those Who Are Looking For A Real Kick Out Of Contouring

Ever since Kim K championed and popularised the whole ‘contouring’ trend, the beauty world was never the same again. Contouring and highlighting changed the way we saw makeup; beauty looks were no longer flat and one-dimensional. Instead, we saw chiseled cheekbones, glowing under-eye areas, pointy noses, plumper lips — basically, features that we desire that were once only attainable if we went under the knife, became readily available. Best part, you can wipe it all off at the end of the day.
Since contouring opened up a whole new gameplay, makeup artists and beauty gurus weren’t just going to stick to masterfully applying shadows and highlights on their faces. Where’s the fun in that? The birth of collarbone contouring, boob contouring, and even abs contouring came shortly after. We can now have bodily assets without the genes and without working out. It’s truly amazing.
And now, Instagram has decided to kick things up a notch, and we’re introduced to and we’re introduced to leg contouring, which, as its name suggests, has to do with contouring your legs. So yes, that means you can “physically Photoshop” flabby thighs away with a contour palette, leaving you with lean and toned legs… and no one will ever be the wiser.
Check out the one IG video that started it all:

Like how most body contouring works, cream contours work best, since you are able to chart and map out where you intend your products to go. Just like how you’d want to remove double chins when you contour your face, the same theory applies to when you apply product on your leg. The trick is to rid off the excess flab and highlight only the leanest portions of your leg.
We know, it sounds complicated, and we aren’t going to deny that it is. This trend does require some skill and an advanced knowledge of how contouring and highlighting works, and you’ll also need to have the right tools (i.e. brushes, setting sprays, finishing powders, etc etc) to perfectly nail a leg contour. It is not a beginner’s trend to try. Plus, as a colleague very accurately pointed out, “what happens if your makeup stains your clothes and seat?”

So we reckon that this leg contouring shebang only works when you need to flaunt a thigh at the beach, or on set during a photoshoot. The side-by-side comparisons do look pretty darn tempting, but this really isn’t for the everyday folk. We mean, just thinking of all that effort and elbow grease needed to paint your entire leg is just… tiring. Way too much legwork, if you ask us.
Difficulty Level: 5/5
And if you’re new to contouring, we have some basic tips to share here.

The Reason Why You’d Want To Have A Horse Fat Beauty Product By Your Bedside

During my trip to Hokkaido two years back I was introduced to this one strange ingredient that you can most definitely find hanging around just about every Japanese drugstore. And I truly do mean every — on top of the fact that the locals there seem to even worship this one miracle product. If you’ve been there you’d know it, but for those who are unsure — we’re probably going to shock you with this one: horse fat.

In my colleague’s exact words, “this sounds so disgusting”. I know, yucks. I saw troves of tourists purchasing them in bulk in Hokkaido, and for the longest time I really didn’t understand why. Fast forward two years, I was generously gifted a box of Skinfood sheet masks that are infused with — you guessed it — horse fat. Life has come a full circle indeed. I was skeptical, nonetheless, so I did my due research; and turns out, that one bizarre ingredient does have some major skincare benefits.

via GIPHY

Years before its popularity as a beauty ingredient, horse oil — a by-product of horse fat — was used in traditional medicine as a heal-it-all product in East Asia. It was touted as a remedy for insect bites, burns, cuts, hair loss and even asthma. And people believed in it, since the oil was absorbed quickly by our skins, giving way to positive results. Why? The oil has properties that are similar to the ones produced naturally by our bodies. In Hokkaido, horse oil gained traction because it effectively protected the locals’ skin against the harsh cold with intense hydration.

Since then, positive results saw an increase in demand for beauty products infused with horse oil; companies rapidly produced horse oil in various forms — creams, gels, masks, shampoo, conditioners, moisturisers, lip balms… you name it, there’s something for it.

So, yay or neigh, you’ll have to decide for yourself; but we do have some product recommendations so you can start riding on the trend:

skinfood_mayu_horse
Skinfood Beauty In A Food Mask — Horse Fat
$1.20/pc, available on Lazada.

For me at least, sheet masks are possibly the easiest way to get on board with any strange beauty ingredient, since they’re fuss free and you don’t have to invest large amounts of moolah to try things out. Skinfood’s Beauty In A Food Mask series comes in a whole bunch of weird “flavours”, with Horse Fat being one of their star sellers. Put the mask on for a good 20 minutes, let it work its magic, and you’ll end up with moisturised and smooth skin. This is especially useful for folks with dry skin with dry patches; the intense hydration will help soften any flakey spots.

Take A Look Inside CHANEL's First Stand-alone Pop-up Boutique

If you have watched the PARIS COSMOPOLITE 2016/17 Métiers d’art Ready-to-Wear show and have been counting down the days till it arrives in Singapore to see the pieces for yourself, then you would’ve known that the CHANEL pop-up boutique is finally all set up. As mentioned in a previous post, the CHANEL fashion boutique at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands is closed to prepare for a re-opening in November. In the meantime, CHANEL has set up its first stand-alone pop-up boutique which will be housing the PARIS COSMOPOLITE 2016/17 Métiers d’art Ready-to-Wear collection, the first of three collections to be displayed there.
Inspired by how the people dining at the Ritz hotel dress in the 20s and 30s, the collection includes lavish yet sophisticated eveningwear in minimal colours of cream, white and black, with flashes of red. The natural silhouette of the body are highlighted in this season with a well-defined waist and flared hem, alongside the classic CHANEL tweed jacket and delicate tulle dresses. Pearls, floral embroidery and ostrich feathers further add to the intricate details of the overall look which are styled on glossy black mannequins. You can’t miss the season’s over-the-knee patchwork suede boots which will be on display, along with the accessories, including CHANEL’s Gabrielle bag.

Take a step in and you’ll be able to view the collection right from the entrance of the mall, with an immersive installation showcasing select looks, as well as fashion films – both those that document the runway show’s debut at the Ritz Paris, and behind-the-scenes moments. After that, head right down to the 3000 sq ft. space that’s divided into four rooms, all with monochromatic interiors distinct to CHANEL and fitted out in contemporary art-deco-inspired décor. The store windows are framed by a series of black arches with white arches lining the three walls of the boutique, which adds a nice contrast to the angular motif on the beige and black carpets.

Nylon Team Picks: Moisturisers That Keep Our Complexions Fresh and Hydrated All Day

Thanks to the perpetual appeal of a multitasking product, moisturisers that currently occupy our shelves do much more than just, well, moisturise. That said, our quest for the perfect day moisturiser isn’t over, because what we’re looking for are lightweight, non-greasy options to keep our skin in tip-top condition through long days and even nights. But until then, here are our top picks for the formulas that hydrate, shrink pores, boost radiance, fend off UV rays, and then some.

jurlique day care (1)
Jurlique Balancing Day Care Cream
$70 for 40ml and $133 for 125ml, available at Jurlique stores and counters

If there’s one skincare product I cannot live without, it’s a moisturiser. I can’t remember exactly when I started using Jurlique’s day cream, but I remember the first time I did, I knew it was The One. It has a cream texture that isn’t too rich but makes the skin feel completely hydrated; it absorbs into skin well and creates a beautifully plumped base for makeup application; and it smells beautiful – instantly calming like a spa.
— Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief

glossier priming
Glossier Priming Moisturizer
US$25, available from glossier.com

Okay, part of my love for this is just because of its cult status, but it does the job of both plumping and priming skin well too! The brand does great beauty basics, and this is no exception – the cream contains hyaluronic acid and mushroom extract to provide deep hydration, antioxidants, skin-soothing ingredients and more. All this isn’t seen but felt with the feeling of instantaneous hydration. Seriously, the plumping effect is almost immediate! It might feel quite oily when you have a go at it – which is why I sometimes use this on its own – but that quickly tones down to a nice, dewy finish. Sadly, I’m already down to the last remaining remnants of the tube, which just means I need to quickly get a new one, very soon!
— Amelia Tan, Associate Editor

paulas choice skin recovery (1)
Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Daily Moisturizing Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30
$42, available from paulaschoice.sg

There’s a reason why I never shut up about Paula’s Choice products – their formulas are always on point. The sixth product from the brand that’s in my skincare routine (I’m not sponsored by them, I swear) is this day moisturiser with a built-in mineral sunscreen. Now I know this product is meant for drier skin types, but my oily, acne-prone, sensitive skin really likes this lightweight lotion. It goes on nice and smooth without leaving a white cast or feeling too greasy, and it makes a good base for makeup too. Apricot seed oil may be high up on the ingredients list, but it doesn’t break me out at all. Instead, it imparts a light layer of hydration that lasts.
— Jade Yeo, Writer

philosophy take a deep breath
Philosophy Take A Deep Breath Oil-Free Oxygenating Gel Cream
$52, available from Philosophy counters and Sephora

I have commitment issues when it comes to moisturisers. I’ll try out whatever lands on my table, which means that most of the time, I can’t keep track of what I’m using. This one by Philosophy sticks in my mind as one that I liked a lot (though I’m already moving on to the next one). The gel/cream hybrid has a nice light texture which absorbs quickly into the skin. It really does feel like a breath of fresh air.
— Joanne Cheah, Designer

laneige water bank gel cream
Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream
$52, available at Laneige stores and counters and Sephora

I typically don’t like applying oil-based moisturisers on my face, simply because I am not a fan of the greasy texture that follows after the product after letting the product absorb into my skin. And after having a really great run with Laneige’s Water Sleeping Mask about a good three years ago, I caved in and switched out my past day moisturiser for their cult Water Bank Gel Cream, and I never quite looked back. The gel is lightweight enough for day wear, and gets absorbed quickly into my skin, leaving this non-offensive tacky texture that I quite like, for some reason. The cooling sensation that comes with the gel refreshes my skin (especially on work days) and makeup sits on top of it beautifully. Plus, my skin is kept hydrated throughout the day. I mean, it must say something when I truly look forward to slapping on the gel every morning after cleansing, yes?
— Chelsea Tang, Editorial Assistant

etude house moistfull collagen (1)
ETUDE HOUSE Moistfull Collagen Water Jelly Cream
$33.90, available at ETUDE HOUSE stores

I’ve been using Etude House’s Moistfull Collagen Water Jelly Cream and this product really helps provide moisture and remove any tautness after cleansing. One of the main reasons why I buy skincare products and stop using them halfway is because, one, I get lazy; and two, I don’t like formulas that leave my skin feeling sticky or greasy. This one though, has a gel-like consistency and it’s quite literally like water but in jelly form. I love keeping the tub in the fridge so it feels cool and refreshing when I slather it all over my face. The product sinks in fast and although it leaves my face dewy, it’s nothing uncomfortable. My skin feels supple with increased elasticity.

Taobao’s Sister Platform Tmall Will Kick Off A Three-Day Massive Sale This Sunday

As true Singaporeans, we’re always looking out for great bargains online — so here’s a amazing piece of information that you need to hear of, in light of the upcoming Great Singapore Sales:
Tmall is having a massive sale this weekend! The kinds of massive that you can splurge on, absolutely guilt-free. You’ll thank us later. But just in case you’ve never heard of this one-stop shopping site, we’re gonna provide you some exciting context of what Tmall actually is:
Similar to Taobao, Tmall is the sister site under the Alibaba Group that has a focus placed more on promoting goods by both homegrown Chinese brands and major international brands. The site has an impressive array of overseas brands — tens of thousands at that — and just to name a few, we’re already eyeing UNIQLO, Vero Moda, ZARA and Massimo Dutti. That essentially means, for the styles that aren’t available in Singapore, you can very well purchase them through Tmall. It’s like shopping in a huge multi-storied department store with big brands, but all at the comfort of your home.
Here’s where it gets fun: In true GSS spirit, Tmall will be having a huge sale that entitles shoppers up to 50% off items across all product categories! What is very excitingly termed the Tmall 6.18 Mid-Year Mega Sale starts this weekend (June 18) and will last for three days, so that’s truly something to look forward to at the end of the work week.
Check out some of our top picks:

Off-Shoulder Pleated Dress With Crochet Detail

These are the kinds of dresses that we need in the humid Singapore weather, to keep cool and still look chic. The fit-and-flare cut of the dress falls right at the knee, and has an intricate crochet detailing with off-shoulder straps so that your arms and legs still get to… breathe. Pop on the dress by itself for a sprightly fairy look, or throw on a denim jacket (in air conditioned rooms, of course) for a more rugged street style.

collage7
One Piece Bird Print Swimsuit

Not everyone’s keen on a two-piece bikini, which honestly, can be a tad too revealing for our liking. In recent days, girls have been leaning towards the monokini as their choice swimwear, simply because we feel more secure in them and as a result, have more confidence when prancing around the beach. This set here looks very much like a cute A-line dress with bird motifs peppered all around the swimsuit, which we reckon will make for great IG pictures.

collage9
Black Strappy Pinafore Dress

With Koreans in the forefront of stylish street wear, it’s only understandable that we’d want to emulate their style tips and tricks. What we’ve learnt so far: Layering. And this strappy pinafore dress makes for the perfect layering piece, since you can pretty much pair it with whatever top you feel like. The midi style of the bottom half adds a further element of sophistication to the look, and we can see ourselves popping on a pair of oversized shades with the outfit for a lazy Sunday brunch.

collage5
Striped Layered Shorts with Waist Tie

Shorts are always a welcome addition to our wardrobes, considering how convenient they are to style and travel in. This pair of sailor-blue high-waisted shorts comes with white horizontal stripes for a lengthening effect (always a good idea), but what we are intrigued by is actually the short’s front detail. There’s an unusual mix of a button-down style and a ribboned bow, which gives the illusion of a skirt from the front that we find ourselves quite liking.

Off-Shoulder Floral Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits may not be the most convenient outfits when it comes to, ahem, answering nature’s calls, but with prints this gorgeous, our stance that the trouble is truly worth it stands. The off-shoulder style lends that bit of girly sophisticated to the entire look, while the floral detail makes for a good contrast to the otherwise simple design.

collage6
Flutter Sleeve Blouse

In case you haven’t already noticed, our style of dressing is usually geared towards adding hints of quirk into conventional designs, so that while we don’t look ordinary, we aren’t on the edge of crazy alternative too. It’s all about the balance, as they say. Check out these tops — they are pretty minimalist in nature, but that added flutter sleeve and neckline detail just gave the blouse a whole lot more personality. Plus, these come in pastel candy colours of pink and mint, which we never will quite say no to.

collage8
Gingham Sun Dress

Ask any style guru and they’ll gladly affirm the notion that checkered prints will never go out of style. Especially when they’re all over an airy sundress that we see ourselves wearing over and over again. Dresses like these give us lots of styling playroom — but what we are thinking off the tops of our heads is a classic model-off-duty look: leather biker jacket, checkered dress, choker and white sneakers.

And should you be interested in purchasing furniture or home decor for your humble abodes, hesitate no more, for both Taobao and Tmall have enabled sea freight as a new delivery option for bulky items, at a cheaper rate. Single products up to 100kg will be charged at RMB14.5 (excluding GST) for delivery, and consolidated packaged of up to 200kg at the same price.
But before you leave for your online shopping spree in a hurry — you’d be thrilled to know that Tmall and individual merchants on the platform are offering shoppers shopping vouchers that can be applied to your purchases during the sale. What’s more, UOB card users can enjoy S$5 cashback on RMB250 spent on Tmall!
All these items (and infinitely more) can all be browsed and purchased on world.taobao.com or on the Taobao mobile application 手机淘宝.
The Tmall 6.18 Mid-Year Mega Sale starts on June 18, and will end on June 20.

Here's A Round Up Of The Coolest e-Scooters Available In Town

Once upon a time, people actually bought into the idea of waddling around – precariously, may we add – on electric uniwheels and hoverboards. Those obviously didn’t stick around for too long. After all, if you’re gonna fork out pretty pennies on these playthings, at least get something that you’d look cute on, right?
Well, someone must have been paying attention, because the fad of 2017 came whizzing right into our lives and we are now obsessed. Say hi to e-scooters — you’ve probably already seen folks racing through the CBD on them, or perhaps spotted them tucked away, snugly, under the seats of the mrt. Why do people want them? Simple. They’re by far the most entertaining mode of transport that doesn’t require a valid license to operate. Besides, you’d look hella cool with one. Who even needs to walk anymore?

i-MAX Q5_2
i-MAX Q5_3
THE HARDY: i-MAX Q5
$999 for 8.7AH/25-30km.

There’s nothing to not desire when it comes to the i-MAX Q5, especially since it’s an e-scooter with a badass battery lifespan. Hear this: the Q5 is powered on an internationally-approved Samsung Lithium battery that allows you an average travel distance of 25 to 30km without needing to recharge. And that’s not all — here’s where comfort comes into play. Boasting a sleek aerodynamic shape, the Q5 does have some noteworthy specifcations that that give the most bang for your buck. There are the new 8” pneumatic air tyres, plus a front suspension and rear pull type shock absorber, all specially installed in a nifty 13kg model to ensure you get the smoothest and safest ride possible.
ZERO2.0_45left_edited
ZERO2.0_deconstructed_tools2
THE MINIMALIST: ZERO 2.0 CARBON FIBRE
$899 for 5.2AH/15km version; $1,099 for 10.4AH/25km version.

We can’t decide which feature of the ZERO 2.0 Carbon Fibre e-scooter we’re more impressed by — the fact that it only weighs 6.4kg, making it easily the lightest model in the market, or by the ingenious modular design of the scooter that enables users to totally dismantle it, to mix and match parts (without any technical knowledge, too). Whichever it is, there’s no denying the overall minimalism of the scooter’s form: everything’s kept sleek and sharp, keeping any unruly wires out of sight, evident by the integration of the usual protruding LCD odometer into the scooter’s stem structure. And just as a cherry on top, the ZERO 2.0 is equipped with a 450W power motor for a more seamless and enjoyable cruising experience.
High-Res_INOKIM Light_Family_WhtBack
INOKIM Light_White_Folability
THE GO-GETTER: INOKIM LIGHT
$1,199 for 7.8AH/25km; $1,349 for 10.4AH/35km.

If you’re ever looking for an e-scooter to kick-start your scooting journey, the INOKIM Light might just be that beginner’s piece to own. There’s nothing complicated with operating this scooter — switch it on, step on board, kick off with a foot and you’re good to whizz off. Plus, the chunky 8.5” tyres effectively negate tiny bumps on the road, providing a smooth ride while you’re on the go. All cables are cleverly concealed within the scooter’s body, so it does boast a pretty sweet matte, minimalist appearance. This isn’t ideal for long journeys, but still works beautifully for folks who’d like to have an alternative to walking short distances.
Stigo Product Image_2
Stigo Product Image_4
THE LAID-BACK: STIGO FAST FOLDING SEATED
$1,799 for 5.8AH/25km; $2,049 for 11.6AH/40km.

It doesn’t get anymore comfortable than STIGO’s seated e-scooter, because why stand when you can enjoy the comforts of sitting as you commute? After years of designing, engineering and manufacturing in Estonia, the STIGO now lets us all stylishly embrace our inner sloths by cruising down pedestrian lanes, while seated. And while the design may look a tad bulky — the scooter’s specs are far from that. The tubular design frames are made up of reinforced hollow tubes that one, make the STIGO extremely lightweight, and two, increase its structural strength. For an e-scooter that comes with a seat, this model comes in at a lightweight 14kg, which we must say is pretty darn impressive indeed.
All e-scooters available at the Falcon P.E.V main showroom at 2 Alexandra Road, #06-06 Delta House, open Mondays to Saturdays, 10am to 7pm. Also available online on falconpev.com.sg.
