The New Shades Of Kat Von D's Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Finally Hit Singapore

This took too long. We first got wind of the 25 new shades of Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, only one of the best liquid lipstick formulas out there, way back in January when Von D herself posted swatches on Instagram.

Without a doubt, it’s the shades like Ophelia, Ludwig and Sanctuary that’ve got us weak in the knees. They all hit Sephora USA stores by February this year, leaving us just blindly waiting for them to arrive here.
For the months that stretched in between, there was no word – until nowThey’re here. Today. Mark the next couple of Fridays on your calendar, because sephora.sg is doing Everlasting flash sales on 2 June, 9 June and 16 June starting 9am, with each sale lasting for 24 hours only. This is your chance to get early access to a couple of the most anticipated shades from the new range, before nine of them officially hit Sephora in July.
Today, Sanctuary, a nude coffee, is available; next week it’ll be the Lolita II Everlasting Lip Liner (yes, all 30 shades of those are coming too!); and on 16 June we get the shade Ludwig, a nude fawn.

The dokiWatch is the World’s Most Advanced Smartwatch For Kids

Back in the good ol’ days when we were learning how to tie our shoelaces, there were no such things as smartwatches. Heck, we didn’t even own mobile phones. Well, the times are indeed a-changin’, because kids these days have the dokiWatch – a modern day gadget for modern day kids.

Basically, the dokiWatch is the world’s most advanced smartwatch for kids, as it is an Android-based device with 3G capabilities. But the ability to connect to the Internet aside, the dokiWatch also lets parents rest easy in the knowledge that they’ll always know where their kid is.
dokiWatch-features

All the colours of the dokiWatch

For instance, the dokiWatch offers multiple communication options, such as GPS tracking, location history (which allows parents to check where their kids have been the whole time), and even video calling, which is a hugeeee step up from when we had to visit a pay phone to call our parents.
Feature

dokiWatch’s calling feature

What’s even cooler though is that you can set up multiple dokiWatch accounts, so that the whole family can contact the doki-wearing kid at any given time. As for the kids, they can look forward to a messaging function, an accelerometer that track’s steps, distance, and calories burned, as well as a built in pet to “feed”, somewhat like a modern-day tamagotchi.

If you want to score the dokiWatch, you’re in luck. The company will be holding an Indiegogo Flash Sale from June 5 at 12am for a period of 48 hours. Each watch will retail for US$119, which is pretty much a bargain considering how you can keep your child safe. Plus, do you really want to buy them that smartphone they’ve been bugging you for?
Missed the flash sale? Not to worry. Hit up www.doki.com for more details on how you can get the dokiWatch. Shipping is available for over 30 countries

Here's How to Achieve A Celestial Closet

Recently, we’ve been seeing stars. Not because we’re feeling dizzy and no, we’re not talking about the non-existent stars in Singapore skies. The stars we’re talking about are making an appearance in the closets of the fashion community, from chiffon dresses, accessories, booties to face stickers. The trend has been around for a while now but it isn’t as prominent here in Singapore. We will be doing our readers wrong if we did not blog about this glitzy and magical trend that is so popular right now and we are determined to turn your closet into a star-studded one.
1. Lingerie
We love our lacy bralettes but we’re gonna start stocking up on these star-spangled ones that add a hint of cheekiness to our lingerie collection. And if we are going to spend $100 on a cute bralette, we are going to show it off. The exposed bra trend is everywhere right now and there are so many ways to subtly have it peeking through. Slip on an oversized muscle tank top so the sides of your bralette can be seen or wear it underneath the choker deep v-neck t-shirt that Kendall Jenner made so popular . If you are daring enough, wear your bralette under a mesh bodysuit and throw over a bomber jacket. Ultimately, wear what is comfortable for you.

2. Chiffon and Satin Blouses
We often see retailers pairing these sparkling stars with materials like chiffon and satin and we think it’s not without good reason. Chiffon gives off a dreamy effect while satin’s reflective material somewhat resembles the galaxy. Anyhow, both materials go well with denim jeans which makes for a great outfit when out on a date or an afternoon picnic.

3. Jackets and sweaters
The classic black leather jacket is a statement piece which we will rarely ever wear out in Singapore because it’s summer here all year long. But if we ever get a chance to wear it when we travel overseas, we are going to go big with a star-embellished one or go home. Besides, a star-adorned piece will guarantee you that Instagram worthy shot.

Don’t feel like dressing up whenever it rains? Avoid looking underdressed by snuggling into this satin star sweatshirt which you can pair with a mesh tulle skirt or a metallic midi. But you know how the weather in Singapore can be so unpredictable. Wearing a dress underneath would be a more versatile option so you can take off the sweater when it starts getting warmer.

4. Accessories and Bags
If star-printed tops appear to be too cluttered for you, accessorise. Layer multiple necklaces that will literally transform your look from zero to ten or put on some dazzling earrings that will bring attention to your face. A cluster of stars on our purses are very much a yes for us too.

 5. Jeans
We really want to cop Kendall Jenner’s star jeans but we have to admit that the position of the star is holding us back albeit it being intentional. Now, we don’t want people staring at our behinds, do we? We love these alternatives from Topshop and Hudson Jeans’ that give the overall outfit a more playful look.

Clay-based Masks to Detoxify and Balance Out the Most Sensitive Skin

Unless you’ve got a burning passion for pottery, you probably don’t have much opinion on the earth-derived material that is clay. Ceramics aside, slathering moist clay on skin is actually a beauty ritual that’s been around since the beginning of time, and for good reason. When used topically, it cleanses and rids our pores of all that gunk, rescuing our congested complexions from an onslaught of greasy buildup. While they may be naturally derived, potent skin purifiers, clay has also earned itself a reputation for being too harsh and excessively dehydrating – a big no-no for skin that reacts negatively to anything and everything.
Well, a good way to counteract that blotchy, itchy aftermath is to rinse your clay mask off before it dries completely. Yes, yes, we know. “Isn’t that the fun part? Waiting for it to crack and flake?” Sure, it may be fun for those with resilient skin, but for sensitive skin types, it’s definitely a lot less fun. When a clay-based formula is damp, your skin will sop up its beneficial minerals right before you feel the start of its drying phase, which stimulates blood flow as it contracts. As soon as it goes past that stage and dries up a little too much, it’s not a good sign. The clay will inevitably suck the life out of your skin, causing possible dehydration and irritation. So, the next time you use a clay mask, keep a close eye on it – when the clay becomes a tad lighter in colour but still feel moist to the touch, then it’s time to wash it off.
Ready to give them a second chance? Have a look at our clay-based picks that are as gentle as they are effective.

fresh umbrian clay (1)
Fresh Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask (Limited Edition)

Umbrian clay originates in the Italian City, Umbria (of course), and it’s pretty much a sponge for all oil slicks, particularly the one that plagues your T-zone. Well, Fresh has combined that proprietary ingredient with sandalwood oil, white chamomile flower and lavender water that takes the clay one step farther by soothing and balancing the skin. You can use this lightly-scented multitasking wonder as a daily cleanser, a face mask, or a spot treatment, depending on your needs. And look, they’ve even given the packaging a little artistic renovation courtesy of the Rometti ceramic workshop in Umbria. How cute is that?
$95, available at Fresh stores and Sephora.

kahina antioxidant mask
Kahina Giving Beauty Antioxidant Mask

Indigenous to Morocco, Rhassoul clay is ridiculously rich in minerals, and since it’s negatively charged while most toxins in the skin are positively charged, it functions like a magnet that draws out all the impurities like dirt, sebum, and blackheads. What it won’t do is dry out your skin. Rhassoul clay is known for its elasticity and texture-smoothing magic, so when it’s combined with argan oil and acai oil, it cleanses deeply while feeding your skin with antioxidants.

may lindstrom (1)
May Lindstrom Skin The Honey Mud Cleanser

A member of the kaolin family, halloysite is great at gently cleansing the skin. In May Lindstrom’s Honey Mud, the white halloysite clay is blended with antibacterial honey and plant oils to infuse your skin with active enzymes as it washes away grime and pollutants. “Gentle cleansing silk” is accurate too – you won’t want to wash off this pudding-like treat once you’ve tried it. (But in all seriousness, please remember to wash it off.)

Handmade Heroes Beauty Warrior Face Mask Purifying Clay Mask

Now, we all know where French green clay is from. Yup, that’s right. Italy. (Just kidding.) French green clay is pretty much a go-to for a deep cleanse and some pore-tightening action. Add a bit of antioxidant-rich turmeric in there and some nourishing vitamin E, and you’ve got one hell of an effective brightening clay mask that draws out toxins for a fresher, less angry complexion.
$24.90, available from handmade-heroes.com.
herbivore botanicals cambrian
Herbivore Botanicals Blue Clay Spot Treatment Mask

Cambrian blue clay is a rare one that’s found in Siberian lakes (oooooh), and it’s prized for its ability to clarify and balance out the skin. This Spot Treatment Mask is able to penetrate deep into the pores to treat existing blemishes while it keeps the skin’s moisture at an equilibrium. Blended with kaolin clay, it extracts impurities and toxins as it delivers essential nutrients and minerals to the skin. Bonus: the rose geranium essential oil in it will calm your senses as well as any visible inflammation.

The 'Subaru' Episode on Asia's Next Top Model is Full of Twists and Turns

To be honest, this week’s episode wasn’t the most exciting one — oh there’s drama alright, more bickering on whether Maureen deserves to stick around because she’s ‘just a pretty face’, Clara’s childish but supposedly endearing antics, and a photoshoot challenge that plays on the models’ fear of heights — but we still expected more. And you know what, Asia’s Next Top Model, true to its theme, did deliver the unexpected, right at the very end. The kind of revelation that sends the comments section in a frenzy. It’s best you stick around for that, because we’re about to dive straight into the episode.
As you know, it’s the Subaru episode, which has two things that the entire Fast & Furious franchise manages to capitalise well on: fast cars and hot girls. This has both, but compared to last episode’s bondage-themed photoshoot, there’s somehow less excitement in this one. After a short bout of “real talk” that Shikin and Tu helpfully give to Clara (to which Tu echoes our sentiments with “you cry like a little girl”), both taking the tone of respectable older sisters, the models are whisked over to a large open space, and greeted by a rather imposing crane. That, and well, a car that’s moving while balancing at a 45-degree angle off the ground.

4U1A8539

4U1A8572

Welcome globally renowned stuntman, Russ Swift, who’s here to show us some cool car tricks. The theme for this week’s photoshoot: ‘Defying Gravity’, a name that we can’t help but belt out too thanks to the musical Wicked, but yes, it means that the models will be a) hung on a trapeze and soaring through the air at a height that won’t be comfortable at all, and b) doing this while Swift executes some death-defying stunts right below them. It sounds way harder that we put it.
4U1A8635

4U1A8619

Already, Clara looks terrified at the notion. But surprisingly, she soldiers on when it’s her turn. Sure, she looks rather stiff but, well, unexpectedly, we didn’t get any unnecessary drama or whining from her, which is doing herself a lot of favours actually. With flowy dresses, leather harnesses and fierce hair we love, done in tight braids with little metal ringlets, each of the girls manage to give off warrior vibes while going back and forth on the trapeze, despite how it must have been incredibly difficult. Shikin’s photoshoot brings this out clearly — she’s got her face perfect, but it’s the timing of the toss of her hand, which sends the fabric flying out into the wind, that she can’t seem to get right. Then, there’s the having to balance on heels on a terrifyingly skinny ledge, while keeping your face serene and body graceful, and while paying attention to the click of the camera, making sure that you’re on your most flattering tippy-toes while the swing’s at its highest point. And that’s not counting the fear that you might fall smack into a high-speed car below. Not easy.
4U1A8789

4U1A8694

Both Tu and Shikin are definitely the high-flyers of this episode though. Despite a long list of things that can go wrong, both creative consultant Daniel Boey and photographer Kevin Ou were impressed with her poses, encouraging her that the only thing she needs to get right is the fabric, and that everything else is on point. As for Tu, you’d never have guessed that she was afraid of heights at all; she looks both brave and soft at the same time, at at one point of the show, you see her heels nonchalantly sailing through the air as she braces herself for the shot. Maureen, whom the show’s now painting to be the dark horse, is also a key part of the race, and gets good shots despite admitting to overthinking some aspects of the shoot. However, it’s dear, sweet Cindy that struggled with this one. She can’t seem to shake off her fear, and almost every camera flash captures her downturned brows and worried expression, along with some rather flat and unimpressive poses. At this stage of the competition, with only 5 girls left, it’s not a good sign.
4U1A8830

But hey, here’s a perk-me-up! “We’re going out!” cries one of the girls after Cindy Mail, and suddenly it seems like living in the model house may not be as fun as we thought. Anyway, TV host and model Bobby Tonelli’s right in the driveway to pick the girls up and head over to the Subaru Motor Show. The twist? Because of course there is one — only 3 of them get to travel in style. Shikin, Tu and Maureen get a comfy car ride straight to the destination, and even ice-cream along the way, which is a rather uplifting reward; we’ll keep that in mind the next time we’re on an Uber. However, the bottom two, based on last week’s results, Clara and Cindy, have to make their own way there… on the bus. The way the music dramatically plays out, and how the camera pans to the girls’ reactions, makes it seem like public transport’s an actual punishment, which, yes, we’ll also bear in mind when we’re next on an SBS bus.
While in the car, Bobby wastes no time on quizzing the girls on ‘who they think is gonna win, egos aside’. With zero hesitation, Shikin jumps in: “I’m gonna win!” Which leaves 18-year-old Maureen, the youngest and least experienced of the bunch to feel awkward, so awkward that she feels like she has to say her piece before the end of the car ride. “Don’t underestimate me,” she says, referring to how the other models think she doesn’t deserve a place in the competition. She sets things straight by explaining how she knows she’s always seen as a ‘pretty face’ but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the skills or potential to be a great model, stuff that she’s already been called out for, multiple times on this show. It gets old. This isn’t the first time we’re hearing this, but this time, Maureen said it with such grace and strength that we can’t really fault her at all. Still, we feel the heat when Tu and Shikin immediately disagree, with Tu finally concluding with a scathing ‘sorry, I don’t see it’. It’s not meant to be bitchy, just brutally honest, but we say, cut that girl some slack already! Oh, as for Bobby? He’s just laughing along — aha, he’s definitely asking all these questions on purpose!
Cut to Clara and Cindy, and let’s just say we’re perplexed. Cindy thinks Clara’s fun, but if you think someone literally whining ‘mummy…’ while running on the road heels off and bare feet, you’re probably way too nice for this recap. They finally make it to the bus stop, and Clara’s downright delirious at this point. Cindy explains how a doorbell works — we don’t mean she’s doing a Bill Nye, we mean she has to explain that you press the doorbell to signal to the driver you’re getting off at the next stop. It’s a pretty universal concept, no?
4U1A9550

4U1A9295

Well, at the Subaru Motor Show, all the models finally gathered to meet Glenn Tan, Subaru executive and guest judge this week, and heave a sigh of relief because there won’t be any challenges this week — they finally get to enjoy themselves and watch Russ Swift perform some amazing car stunts, including drifting and the magical feat of parallel parking on high speed. So far, and apart from the car ride, there’s very little drama. Something’s brewing, alright.
DSC00543

We move on to the judging panel — with no challenge score to fall back on, the girls have to rely entirely on the earlier photoshoot to move on to the next stage. As evident, Tu and Shikin come up top, with plenty of praise. Shikin got her silhouette down, with a neat contrast too that Yu Tsai points out; her body’s facing one way, and wonderfully conveys strength, while her face, arms and the dress all face the other direction, making the picture visually interesting to his photographer’s eye. Boey, however, mentions she’s like a jigsaw puzzle, and she needs to work on making all the different parts — face, eyes, body, dress, environment — work together seamlessly to achieve perfection. Not a bad comment if you think about how the judges are nitpicking now, which means they see potential perfection.
AsNTM5 - Photoshoot_EP09_Final DI_Shikin

AsNTM5 - Photoshoot_EP09_Final DI_Tu

Yu Tsai also heaps praise on Tu, saying that she’s the stunning embodiment of being soft but not weak, and that she has come very far especially since she learns a lot from the judges’ criticism. Similarly, the pick on small things like her feet, but the judges were still impressed. Glenn even says that he’ll use her in his campaign — as the client, here to represent real-world views, that’s certainly a good thing to hear.
AsNTM5 - Photoshoot_EP09_Final DI_Maureen

AsNTM5 - Photoshoot_EP09_Final DI_Clara

For Maureen and Clara, they fall more into the middle of this increasingly small pack. The ‘pretty face’ looks regal in her photo — but only the top half of her body. Her legs look stuck to the trapeze. However, the surprisingly supportive Yu Tsai stood up for her this week, with an honourable speech that says she’s the one to look out for, and that Maureen has been quietly and steadily growing throughout the competition. “You look like Joan of Arc,” he even comments on the picture. His words of advice? Embrace your pretty face. Like a sweeping romantic scene made for reality tv (oh wait…), the misunderstood ingénue Maureen nods, and emboldened by faith, makes a confident speech of her own too. And guess who jumps in with a final word of encouragement? Glenn. You may or may not know him from last season’s eye-rolling debacle, but here, he makes a 180-degree turn in attitude, and kindly corrects her words: say “I will be”, not “I think”, as he encourages her to own her confidence. Not bad at all! Clara, on the other hand, gets poor mixed reviews, with the judges commenting on her broken hand pose that looks ‘like a little bird that broke her wing’. Remember what Tyra said? H2T!
AsNTM5 - Photoshoot_EP09_Final DI_Cindy

Okay, you know who’s up… Cindy. She already looks nervous, and true enough, her photo’s the most disappointing of the lot. The pose is alright, if a little lasklustre, but it’s her face that gives it away — you can tell from the furrowed brows that she’s not happy to be here at all. Once again, the judges get Cindy to shout things.
Not before long, we get to the results. Tu’s the winner, and Shikin’s a close second. No surprise there. And… Cindy gets the lowest scores of the week.

Which is irrelevant, because she gets a second chance!! NOBODY IS GOING HOME. This is the best news we’ve heard this entire competition.
DSC00586

BUT we know what’s truly on your minds. Yes, the girls look great and everything, but right after the judging and happy reunion hug that sees all 5 girls huddling together, we notice that judge Cindy’s still talking — is this a belated challenge, or something else? Way to keep us in suspense. “Come on out!” Cindy Bishop says a bit too cheerfully, and from behind the curtains, we see a new girl strolling into the room. Like so.

Consider our jaws dropped. We’re shooked. Who on earth is Xiao Qing? Is she a new contestant? How is any of this fair?? After this week’s madly skilled driving, are they taking it further by trying to pull a stunt on us?! (See what we did there.) Well, we are living in an Internet age, so with a little bit of amateur snooping — we’re talking about the great keyboard warriors of the Internet, by the way — they found out certain key details which we will gladly recount now. First, her Instagram account offers a better look of how her face actually looks like.

A post shared by Xiaoqing小青 (@x.q.zhang) on

Other than a model, she appears to be the Owner/Creative Director of fashion label X.Q.ZHANG as well. A quick check on her website says that her fashion brand started in 2004 after a successful career as a fashion model in Paris and London — she was even based in Singapore for a while from 2006, before moving over to Shanghai to expand there. So, logically, we can conclude that she could be a new model mentor, or a client, basically someone brought on board to give advice to the girls.
Until this incriminating piece of evidence that is…

Happy to join the race towards becoming Asia’s Next Top Model #asntm5

A post shared by Xiaoqing小青 (@x.q.zhang) on

The plot thickens. What does this mean?? Why do we feel like she could be a “fake freshie”? Is she a spy or an actual contestant? Whatever the case, we’re very, very intrigued — though we’ll only know the week after next because the recap episode’s up. All we can say is this, a PSA to the fans who’ve been flaming x.q’s  social media accounts, and in the name of world peace: you guys need to chill, we know you already have a favourite model, but no one deserves all this reckless hate. In the legendary words of Toy Story’s Woody: play nice.

Emerald Isn't That Scary An Eyeshadow Shade — And Here's How You Can Work The Colour

If your makeup tastes are anything like us, you’d prolly be part of the brown-eyes-nude-lips club. Yup, as much as we love that occasional pop of blue all over our lids, unconventional eyeshadow shades are never quite the staple hues that we gravitate towards for everyday wear. Just take a peek into our eyeshadow palettes — you’d realise, very unsurprisingly, that the colours which have hit pans are mostly neutral tones of brown, pink and peach.
What we are noticing on trusty Instagram though, is the sudden rise in popularity of this one particular colour: Emerald. We know, before you frown and shrug off the entry, let us just put it out there that emerald, in general, is indeed one of the scariest colours to work with. The cool-toned green has a tendency to wash out complexions, leaving our skins looking sallow and dull. But when finessed well, emerald can work out to be quite the gem, especially when it’s blended out beautifully all over the lids. Plus, there are so many ways to wear the colour, it’s almost a pity that so fervently shied away from it all the time.
It all sounds a tad bit complicated and gimmicky right now, but trust us — and let us guide you through on how to get started on the emerald eye look:
For the beginners:
The emerald eyeliner

There’s no rush to jump straight into a full-blown emerald eye look, which can be quite daunting, even for us. Wet your toes first with subtle accents of green, such as a dark, forest green eyeliner that we guarantee isn’t as crazy as it sounds. Have on your usual brown look, but with a coloured eyeliner this time. Green goes particularly well with dark brown eyes and a mauve lip — it works, try it!
Go matte

Green itself is already a colour that grabs attention, so if you’re not one to want more eyes on yours — stay away from the shimmers. Just have a dab of emerald right smack in the middle of your lid, above your irises as a highlight shade, and then blend the colour out (like you mean it) with safe neutrals like browns and taupes. This will create a relatively neutral look, with a twist of green.
For the slightly more adventurous:
The emerald lid shade

A post shared by Deepica Mutyala (@deepicam) on

So, you’ve managed to battle past the curious glances given on the train, because no one else took the liberty of attempting to step out of safe eyeshadow waters. Fret not, you’re doing well. Go the extra mile of having your entire lid covered in emerald, and at this point you can also add in the shimmers too. To tone the look down, go ahead and have your under-eye area coated in a muted burgundy-brown hue. This will balance things out while adding warmth back to your eyes.
Earthy emeralds

This look may be slightly tricky, because we are only going to be utilising just one shade here. But if you can create a full smokey eye with just brown shadows, who said the same can’t be done with green? Select a slightly warmer hued one — think the Poison Ivy kind — and work it like how you’d use a neutral colour. Go in with a light hand when blending your crease shade so the colour looks diffused and subtle. Bring in a glitter or foiled shadow of similar hue for the lids, and you’re good to go.
For the bravest hearts:
Have your entire eye look based on a shimmery emerald colour

A post shared by Neb Radzif (@fx.cat) on

If it’s anything that you literally couldn’t care for at all — is what others think of your bold eyeshadow looks. Pile on the shimmer and glitter, in true emerald colour, all over your lids. Amp up the party on your peepers with fun colours along your bottom lash line, such as a sparkly baby blue. Do remember that when going full-on emerald, the rest of your face needs to be sufficiently bronzed up to balance out the very cool-toned colour. Your choice of lipstick should also be one that’s a healthy shade of say, rose, to bring warmth back to your complexion.

The Browhaus Ombre Brows Embroidery Service – To Do Or Not To Do?

By Adele Chan
Ever heard the saying: change your eyebrows, change your luck? It could be more than just superstition; because when you look different, people will react to you differently as well. This past week, Browhaus launched two new Brow Resurrection treatments — Full and Ombre, and since it’s been a year that I’ve done anything to my brows, I signed up for one of these.

Custombrow-3.0-Bow

WHAT IS IT?
Brow Resurrection is the fancy name of Browhaus’ brow embroidery service. And brow embroidery is like….getting a tattoo. A blade of tiny needles (don’t worry, disposable ones) implant pigment just beneath the surface of the skin, and the result looks like real hair.
DOES IT HURT?
The brow lady technician slathers on numbing cream so all you feel are tugs. But…as time passes, so do the effects of the painkilling cream, so I did what anyone should do: ask her to stop and put more of the good stuff. If you opt for the Ombre service, the technician will “dot” the ends of your brows to create the gradient effect. The dotting is annoying; it feels like a small dull tip poking at you constantly. It almost got painful at one point (pun intended), so I actually did tell her to stop and add more cream. The real pain begins when you get home and the numbing cream wears off. Your brows will start to sting like paper cuts. But it’s ok. We’re women! And we women can handle pain!
AND THE RESULT?
brows_beforeafter
OMG my brows are so full…. I’m not used to them! They look weird when I’m not wearing my eye makeup, but I know that the first few days after the treatment, brows will look a lot darker than what it’s meant to be. On the plus side, the technician managed to balance out my uneven brows (one was shorter and higher than the other), and she was amazed that I lived with uneven brows for a year! My other half says my new brows make me look “compassionate”. Um, I guess that means less fierce?
TO DO OR NOT TO DO?
The service starts from $1,800. It’s a huge investment for brows; for brows that will last up to 18 months. If you’re wiling to fork out that much dough, be sure that you want to do this. Be sure of your brow shape after the technician draws them on, and don’t be scared. It’s only a little painful.

Brow Resurrection Full retails at $1,800 for 120 min (price includes GST). Inclusive of 3 touch-ups.
Brow Resurrection Ombre retails at $2,000 for 120 min (price includes GST). Inclusive of 2 touch-ups.

Our Editor's Beauty Picks Of The Week

Here’s a round-up of four outstanding beauty items that recently landed on my desk. Buy! Buy!
By Adele Chan
cle de peau beauté The Foundation
Price TBC (27ml), available in 12 shades, available from August 2017 at the cle de peau beauté store and counters

cdp

When I first saw this jar, I thought it was the “La Creme” from the brand. Then when I realised it was a foundation, I was so excited to try it because every past foundation from cle de peau has not disappointed. My first impression of this cream foundation is that it is soft; the texture feels soft to the touch, it glides on softly across the face, and even looks soft on the skin. So soft. After a minute of settling on the skin, there’s a “blurring” effect that makes pores appear smaller, and skin glows where light hits it. I must say though, almost every good foundation does this as well, but what I like about “The Foundation” is really its incredible softness. I like how soft it makes my skin look. Also, being from cle de peau beauté, I’m pretty sure there are loads of skincare benefits that come with constant use of this makeup; I can’t claim that it’s done anything in particular for my skin as I’ve only used this for a few days, but I can say that I’ve had no bad reactions to it. I’d prefer though, if this product came in a pump bottle or a squeeze tube; jars aren’t exactly the most hygienic, though they look the most expensive.

Kérastase Aura Botanica Concentré Essentiel Aromatic Nourishing Oil Blend
$50 (50 ml), available at Kérasatase salons (see full listing at hair-salons.kerastase.com)
kerastase aura botanica

Where few hair treatments actually do anything for my dry, frizzy hair, this oil performs miracles. Just one pump of this golden liquid can smooth down my entire mane — the oil makes my hair look healthier, glossier, and more manageable, and all without a heavy or oily feeling. I can even skip a hair styling product and my hair doesn’t look its usual mess. I like this product so much that I’m going to standby a second bottle of this so I don’t panic when the first one finishes. By the way, this was O Magazine’s (the Oprah Winfrey mag!) May 2017 Spring Beauty O-Wards Winner for “Best Treatment For Dry Hair”.

Lush Ugai Mouthwash
$18 (45g / approx. 80 tabs), available at Lush stores and lushsg.com
lush ugai

This is a solid mouthwash — you heard that right. It comes in the form of little tablets — just pop one in the mouth, sip a little water, let the whole thing fizzle like a soda, then swish it around. It’s not so much the novelty of it being solid that I like, but really the mild flavour of sea salt, tea tree oil (both antibacterial), and green tea that the formula is made of. I’ve never been a fan of Listerine or Dettol mouthwashes — both always leave too strong a taste in the mouth (that honestly makes me feel ill); and even the version from Aesop that comes in the nicest mouthwash bottle in the world is too potent for my liking; so when this surprising offering from Lush came along this past week, I feel like I’ve discovered a gem; and one that I can take along with me on planes!

Aesop Istros Aromatique Room Spray
$67 (100ml), available from 3 July 2017 at Aesop stores globally
aseop istros

Aesop recently announced three room sprays and sent one version to each media. I got the Istros blend, which comprises of Pink Pepper, Lavender, and Mimosa, with undertones of Cedar and Sandalwood, and a final hint of Tobacco. If anyone takes this off my desk I’m going to go crazy on them. I don’t know how the client knew this would be the scent that would get me, but it’s exactly how I want my home, office, and basically any room I’m in to smell like. And yes, it’s pricey for an air spray, but this is a beauty brand that has skincare kits that cost in excess of $400. Nothing to think about. It’s $67 for peace and happiness.

The New Adidas Pride Collection Will Have You Walking On Rainbows

In case you didn’t already know, every June is international Pride Month, which means that we can expect to see brands — sneaker companies especially — beginning to release LGBT-themed products in support of the community. Instead of draping an entire pair of kicks in a rainbow print and calling it a day (though that would admittedly be pretty cool), however, Adidas’ appropriately named-Pride collection opts for a slightly more subtle route, and we’re definitely liking what we’re seeing.

Pride07

The collection uses the ever-popular Superstar, EQT Support ADV and Ultra Boost 3.0 silhouettes as its canvas, and we use the word “canvas” here very deliberately because it’s almost as if Adidas used these kicks as an impromptu art project (in a stylish way, of course). The colours of the rainbow are added to the shoes in varying degrees — the EQT and Ultra Boost iterations more or less retain their original looks by adding multicoloured dots on the heel portion, while the Superstar’s prints extend all the way to its signature toe cap. We’re really digging the pop of colour, and even without the political message behind it we’d still want to cop a pair of these babies.
Pride04 Pride06

Wasting no time at all, the Adidas Pride collection is due for a limited release today, so you might want to keep a look out on the brand’s US website because they might drop any moment now. Some of the most reliable sneaker silhouettes paired with a subtly eye-catching aesthetic and a positive message? Sounds like the perfect combination, if you ask us.

Transform into “No Face” or Spider-Man in an Instant with These Quirky Cosplay T-Shirts

Cosplay is just one of the many brilliant things to come out of Japan. It’s nice to look at and it lets you escape into a reality that otherwise doesn’t exist. Thing is, it’s not easy to pull a look off. Costume design is more often than not expensive and extremely time-consuming to build (at least for hardcore cosplayers who don’t believe in buying costumes).
But what if you want to look like your favourite character minus all the effort, money, and dedication? Well, LowCostCosplay ain’t the only way to get things done.
Introducing a range of T-shirts by Japanese company Shalemon that lets you transform into your favourite character in the most no-brainer way possible – you lift the shirt over your head, and voila, you become the character via a printed face on the inside of the shirt.

Spider-Man cosplay tee

Prints include popular characters like “No Face” from Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, Ryuk from Death Note, Slime, Evangelion, and even a simple Spider-Man mask. At the front of each tee, there are printed Japanese words with ironic meanings. For instance, the words at the front of the No Face tee say “Yes Face”. Yeah, you get the picture.

Whatever the case may be; these t-shirts are a great way to cosplay without actually having to really cosplay. Currently, all the designs in this funky collection are going for 2,808 yen ($35) each and can be bought from either Shalemon’s store, Amazon Japan, or Rakuten.

TOPMAN Launches “Fine Tailoring” Suits Designed by Charlie Casely-Hayford

When it comes to casual wear, few brands in the world can beat TOPMAN. The British clothing juggernaut however is taking things a step further this June with the release of its swanky “Fine Tailoring” collection designed by Charlie Casely-Hayford.
The opulent new collection will comprise of 10 beautifully crafted suits, with each having a firm focus on design, fit, and cut. The collection will also blend sartorial techniques with modern silhouettes to produce a “meticulously curated series of timeless suits.” Hey, whoever said that fast fashion couldn’t be classy?

topman_773779

“The TOPMAN Fine Tailoring collection is about creating the perfect suit for every occasion for the modern man about town. I wanted to create a unique statement by designing a series of suits that were forward thinking in their approach – retaining Savile Row detailing such as a half canvas and a working cuff and combining those elements with a streamlined and modernist TOPMAN outlook,” said Casely-Hayford.
topman_773784352

In terms of variety, the collection has casual weekend suits, formal three-piece wedding suits, and even a teal velvet tuxedo that comes with a split shawl colour.
It’s not all about the suits though. Also included in the collection is a limited edition printed kimono made from pure silk, with contemporary references to mobile phones and the Instagram ‘like’ button, all the while juxtaposing the traditional design of a mythical dragon.

Whatever the case may be; there’s plenty to look forward to when the collection hits stores from mid-June onwards.

The June Beauty Buys We're Most Excited About

New month, new buys! June means that we’re truly into summer, so even more fun summer-themed products are coming out to play. We’re once again spoilt for choice with so many things across makeup, skincare and haircare launching in the next week alone, that curating this monthly list was, as usual, a challenge. Both in picking out the best and most exciting stuff, and exercising self-restraint over our wallets. 💸

Liese Creamy Bubble Colour in Biscuit Beige and Mint Ash

liese new colours

Liese’s foam hair dyes are the beauty gods’ gift to vain girls too lazy or broke to book a professional hair dye session in a salon. That’s why we love these – they leave behind some pretty legit colour, and are easy enough for even the biggest beauty noob to use. These are the two new trendy shades launched for the summer, if you want to go a bit lighter with your hair colour for the next few months.
$19.90, available at Watsons, Guardian, and leading supermarkets and hypermarkets from 1 June 2017.

ETUDE HOUSE Any Cushion All Day Perfect
etude house any cushion

Another cushion? Yes, another cushion. We don’t mind, because ETUDE HOUSE tends to get their cushions right. This is the latest addition to the Any Cushion range, and focuses on providing coverage that’s long-lasting. You also need to see the super cute trinkets you can decorate your cushion with, here.
$32, available at ETUDE HOUSE stores from 1 June 2017.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua XL Ink Liner
mufe aqua xl

So… the brand is calling this, together with the new Aqua XL Colour Paint, “athleisure” products. How on earth did athleisure – a trend we still can’t decide if we really like or not, by the way – cross over into the realm of beauty? And what on earth does athleisure makeup even mean?
Apparently, it’s just a new way of saying this formula will be able to stand up to the endurance test, remaining as high-impact colour on the skin for a full 24 hours. And the colours are really fun, bright and punchy… like workout wear, we guess? Anyway, this is a new liquid liner that comes in 15 shades spanning matte, lustrous, diamond and metallic finishes. The 3 diamond and metallic ones are especially fun, and we’re quite looking forward to putting them to the sweat test.
$38, available at the MAKE UP FOR EVER boutique (full collection) and Sephora (selected shades) from 8 June 2017.

Burberry Summer Collection
burberry summer

We don’t actually want to use that heart-print palette, we just want to take an Instagram picture of it. But, if you actually dip your brush into this First Love blush and highlighter palette, the bright matte pink mixes with the pastel pink to add quite a natural flush to the cheeks. The rest of the collection features eye and lip colours that come in refined hues of peach, copper and nudes, in typical Burberry style.
$38 to $94, available at TANGS at Tang Plaza, tangs.com, Sephora ION and sephora.sg from 8 June 2017.

NARS Orgasm Collection
HyperFocal: 0

We finally laid hands on this collection today, and oh boy, that Orgasm Liquid Blush – every bit as beautiful on the skin as we thought it’d be. We might even go as far to say… we like it better than the original Orgasm powder blush. 😱 Since it’s a slightly less shimmery version, and can double up as a really pretty eyeshadow, too. See the rest of the Orgasm collection here.
$40 to $50, available at the NARS store and counters from 1 June 2017.

YSL Beauty The Shock Eye Collection
ysl the shock
This is basically an excuse to get yourself a new tube of the cult YSL Beauty Volume Effect Faux Cils mascara, since it now comes with not only a special edition packaging, but also a upgraded brush that’s now wider, and features four inner reservoirs cut into its structure, to coat the lashes with even more high-impact pigment. There’s plenty to love in the rest of the collection too, in the form of a brow marker, eye crayon duo, an eye gloss, and a very badass smoky palette.
$45 to $129, available at YSL Beauty stores and counters from June 2017.

Origins Modern Friction Cleansing Stick
origins modern friction

Yas, Origins is getting in on the cleansing stick game. The Modern Friction Cleansing Stick contains white rice and purple rice to provide a gentle exfoliating effect. White rice has long been used as a skincare ingredient to help refine the skin, while the more exotic purple rice is for an antioxidant boost.
$51, available at Origins stores and counters, and Sephora and sephora.sg from 1 June 2017.

LANEIGE Anti-Pollution Finishing Pact
laneige-anti-pollution-finishing-pact

The dirt in the air, while invisible, is real. So don’t wait for haze season to scramble for the anti-pollution beauty products. This new pressed powder has green tea calming powder to soothe the skin and restore the skin barrier. That’s the green part of the pact, while the white portion is made up of a sebum control powder to keep the skin matte and fresh. The powder particles of different sizes stay close together so this goes on evenly on the skin, while preventing pollutant particles from sticking.
$36, available at LANEIGE stores and counters from 1 June 2017.

6 Watermelon-Infused Beauty Products For Some Serious Skin-Quenching Action

It was only until orders for this one particular overnight mask from Glow Recipe went way above the brand’s expected sale count (and got the Internet in a frenzy, too) that we realised… watermelon does have some amazing skincare benefits, doesn’t it? Apart from being the choice fruit to quell parched throats in scorching weathers, it’s good to note that watermelon is packed chockfull of skin-hydrating vitamins and minerals that all contribute to healthy skin. Expect to see loads Vitamins A, B6 and C, as well as lycopene and amino acids when reading the ingredients list of watermelon-infused beauty products.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask
US$45, available at glowrecipe.com or sephora.com

Behold, the said overnight mask that got such a cult following, the site promptly sold out of product, and has even racked up a waitlist of five thousand people. According to Glow Recipe, watermelon rind and flesh are commonly used in Korea to soothe irritated and inflamed skin. This mask does just that — the cooling gel formula floods the skin with hydration that helps to calm, repair and restore tired skin. Basically, it’s an all-in-one multi-purpose face mask that can be worn to bed (pillow proof!), or as a standard wash-off mask.

Algenist Overnight Restoring Cream
$127, available at Sephora and sephora.sg

Just because its name doesn’t include the word ‘watermelon’ doesn’t mean that this luxurious night treatment doesn’t draw on the fruit’s many benefits. Formulated with rock samphire, watermelon and apple extract, as well as alguronic acid, this night cream delivers powerful anti-aging benefits with prolonged use. Wrinkles are likely to appear minimised, while skin appears more supple and rejuvenated for a beautiful glow-from-within.

Origins Make A Difference Plus+ Rejuvenating Treatment Lotion
$50, available at the Origins store and counters, Sephora and sephora.sg

It’s always good to have on a layer of toner before piling on the moisturiser, to prep the skin for more effective absorption of product. The Rejuvenating Treatment Lotion by Origins acts just like a toner, except that it’s made with the three magic ingredients of Rose of Jericho, Lychee and Watermelon complexes. The watermelon extract in it helps to trigger collagen production, for soft and supple skin. There are a couple of ways to reward your skin an extra shot of pamper with it — try the Korean 7-step toner trick, where you pat on toner into your skin seven times (yup, you read that right), or leave the toner in the fridge a couple of hours before use for an extra cooling sensation on the skin.

Philosophy Melon Daiquiri Shampoo / Bath & Shower Gel
$41.95, available here.

The time spent in the bath should be one that’s sacred… which is probably why people spend good money on luxurious body foams. This head-to-toe formula by Philosophy combines watermelon essence with other fruity goodness for a shower gel that can be used on your hair and body for intense cleansing and hydration. Plus, you get to step out of the shower with a faint sweet scent of watermelon lingering all day.

Sephora Collection Whipped Cream Body Moisturiser
$33, available at Sephora and sephora.sg.

We’ve learnt to never underestimate Sephora’s in-house products, because they do have a pretty decent track record for offering some of the most reasonably priced products that actually perform. Their cream body moisturiser comes with a airy, mousse-y texture because of its whipped nature, and get absorbed into the skin quick, leaving a satiny soft finish. The watermelon extract in it provides the necessary moisture needed for your skin, too.

Kocostar Watermelon Slice Mask Sheet
$6, available at Sephora and sephora.sg.

You can have on actual slices of cucumber, lemon and tomato all over your face, but have you once seen anyone pile watermelon slices on their skin? Chances are, no. The next best alternative is probably to use watermelon-infused mask sheets, but don’t skip out on the fun with the plain ol’ single white ones. Try the Kocostar masks, where you literally get to paste on sheet masks that come decorated as watermelon slices all over your face. Read more about it here.

A Story Of How A Holy Grail Foundation Was Found

By Tami Lai
The story of how I find a really solid beauty product always seems to go the same way: it lands on my desk, I forget about it, and then eventually unearth it again under a mountain of beauty products after a few weeks (or months). And then I finally bring it home to give it a try.
I know, I know – how tragic, to have so many beauty products to try that it’s easy to forget about so many of them. 🙄 But then, that’s what we’re here for, to offer our faces, bodies and hair as tributes to all the new products that are released into the market literally every single week, to figure out what works and what doesn’t, so we can tell you about it.
So this post is about one of my most favourite things to try: liquid foundation, and more specifically shu uemura’s latest one, the Petal Skin Fluid Foundation. According to the press release, this one promises “poreless coverage” and a “soft radiance”, to give skin a texture that’s like, well, a petal.
petal skin 1
This is via something the brand calls the “Petal Skin Technology”, which involves the fluid becoming volatile so it can better diffuse and disperse the pigments over the skin, resulting in a thin layer that doesn’t skimp on coverage. Spherical pigments softly diffuse light over the complexion, and deepsea water help with instant hydration.
Okay, but to be honest, “poreless  coverage” and “soft radiance” are things that 80% of foundation press releases promise. For a foundation to stand out, it needs to go onto my skin exceptionally well, and sit there all the way till I put makeup remover to it. And yup, the Petal Skin ticks all the boxes. Here’s why.

IT BLENDS BEAUTIFULLY.
petal skin 2
petal skin 3
To me, this is the biggest factor to judge how good a foundation is. When dispensed, the Petal Skin feels more gel-like – it doesn’t really move around when pumped onto the back of my hand.
But when I pick some up with a brush and apply it onto my face, each stroke leaves behind a streak that blends magically into my skin. By magically, I mean that one stroke is all it takes: no patchiness, no streakiness, just skin that looks natural yet with all my imperfections magically made invisible.

IT GIVES ENOUGH COVERAGE.
My skin really isn’t great – dark circles are a mainstay, and recently I’ve been prone to an invasion of pimples on my forehead, cheeks and chin. Then there are the enlarged pores that are a permanent problem, something I’ve chalked up to genetics (unfortunately).
But one layer of the Petal Skin, and I don’t even have to add concealer. That is seriously impressive. For the past few months I’ve been nursing a stubborn scar on one cheek courtesy of an especially nasty zit, that has defied even many of my reliable concealers. The Petal Skin by itself has been able to cover it up.

IT LASTS.

Foundation check at 5pm (I applied it close to 9am), and the coverage is still holding up decently. I’m not saying that this doesn’t require touch ups at all, as my T-zone, prone to shininess, still requires me to break out the cushion compact I carry around in my bag if I’m heading out after work. But everywhere else on my face can remain touchup-free.

petal-prod-seul

Shu Uemura launched this together with the Petal 55 Foundation Brush, a small, densely-bristled brush that comes in the shape of a petal that they recommend applying this foundation with. The thing is, it’s $80, and I really think any brush, even one 10% of that price, will work just fine. It’s cute though, if you’re a diehard shu uemura collector.
I’m really glad to have discovered the Petal Skin Foundation at this time, as I just ran out of my Shiseido Synchro Skin Liquid Foundation, my holy grail of the past year. Trust me: in this industry, when you actually use a product down to its last drop, it’s a big deal – that’s how heavily I relied on the Synchro Skin. I wasn’t expecting to find a worthy replacement so soon, but then sometimes life gives you nice surprises like that.

shu uemura Petal Skin Fluid Foundation, $68. Available in 11 shades: No.s 364, 375, 554, 564, 574, 584, 744, 754, 764, 774, and 784. Available at shu uemura stores and counters. shuuemura.com.sg
