There's Now A Cute Collection Based On The Marc Jacobs Daisy Fragrance

If you’re a fan of the Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume, along with its sweet but light floral notes, you’ll love this — an entire collection of dresses, tops, skirts, and even accessories based off the iconic bottle that features a posy of white daisies sitting pretty on top. It’s the 10th anniversary of the fragrance, you see, so they’re celebrating it by making a crossover to the fashion department, and then running wild with daisy prints and daisy embellishments all over the Pre-Fall 17 collection.

Like the scent, the collection is floaty and ultra girly — not a bad thing since it does remind us of innocent times, or at least, an imaginary past where we’re prancing around fields on a bright sunny day under blue skies. That said, Marc Jacobs has decided on a more unconventional look for their campaign, opting to have the pastoral, pastel palette juxtaposed against a grungy, urban setting. And it works. Outside of the cliche of micro flowers on flowy dresses, the style features contrast trims and enough pop-out details to embrace a city slick aesthetic, when matches with the right attire, of course.

The skirt and dress here see the most adorable little daisies in feminine silhouettes, with bows, ruffles and draped sleeves all part of the girly appeal. Pair this with a plain tee, and with daring boots or standout earrings, and that should do the trick. Likewise, the white daisy print tee is a wardrobe staple that lives on whether it’s with a skirt or high-waisted mom jeans. Having the flowery print in full bloom against a coloured background also works — now it looks like an abstract art piece rather than a mere garment based off a perfume.

Then, there are the accessories. These don’t settle for safe — Marc Jacobs’ spring/summer runway certainly wasn’t, and these continue the bold and embellished trend with 3-D details even on a crossbody bag. Of course, there’s also a tote and slides that feature the daisies we all know and love from the now-iconic perfume bottle; in classic shades of white and gold, pair this with an unexpected wardrobe for a fresh take on beauty. Suddenly, your outfit’s smelling good too.

You Can Now Get More Of Yayoi Kusama In Her Latest Exhibition – YAYOI KUSAMA: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow

By now your Instagram feeds should’ve already been plastered and dotted (hur hur) with not-so-coincidentally themed images of Yayoi Kusama’s very colourful Obliteration Room, one of the many show-stopping exhibits showcased during the recent Gallery Children’s Biennale. Just like when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and when Coldplay came down to Singapore, Kusama’s interactive pointillism art seems to be taking over our social media platforms, one polka dotted room at a time.

A post shared by Ying (@yingyb) on

And if just one Obliteration Room isn’t enough to satiate your thirst for Kusama’s quirky art, you’d be pleased to know that from June 9 onwards, the public will be introduced to more of the works of the Japanese artist — up close. Step into the much-awaited exhibition of YAYOI KUSAMA: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow, where you’d be treated to more than 120 pieces of artwork — be it paintings, sculptures, videos or installations — all created from the 1950s to the present.

Attendees will also have the chance to have a sneak peek at her some of her never-shown-before works, as well as a trip into her infinity mirror rooms, where you’ll get to explore the development of of her signature dots and pumpkin motifs. Basically, this blockbuster exhibition is where viewers get to interact with Kusama’s artistic thought processes as she creates her pieces, while constantly pushing the boundaries of art.
The location of the exhibition will be at the National Gallery of Singapore, June 9 – Sept 3. Prices start from $15 for Singaporean / PR tickets. More information can be found on nationalgallery.sg.

The Tricks To Keeping Your Contouring Mistake-Proof

Of all the different types of makeup we work our way through on a regular basis, the one that has us feeling the most conflicted has to be the contouring products. We’re certain it’s not just us who have a love-hate relationship with our bronzer and highlighter; blame it on all the pros of YouTube and Instagram who have set the bar so high, by making it seem like all it takes is some strategically-placed streaks of makeup plus a few strokes of a brush, to end up with cheekbones so sharp they could cut.
It’s not so easy in real life, as you might have figured out by now, possibly after a number of failed attempts at emulating them. This is because it’s tricky to figure out exactly where the light hits the planes of your face; there is obviously no one-size-fits-all formula as well. Doesn’t help when the internet throws up all sorts of incredulous contouring trends, such as applying your bronzer with a knife placed against your face, or putting a million colours on your face and mixing them together, because somehow or other, that gives you a “natural” contour.

How do you do this blending thing again…?

But by now, after several experiments gone awry, we think we’ve got it figured out. The key to getting contouring right is truly to keep it simple, and that means 1) use as few tools as possible, and 2) keep it looking natural.
We’ll break it down here.
1) Use as few tools as possible
Keeping contouring easy means this is not the time and place for huge palettes filled with a mind-boggling array of shades, and three different kinds of brushes to apply them with. Those will just confuse you unnecessarily, and more likely than not the wrong colours will end up on the wrong spots on your face. Which means, seek out something you can blend with your fingers, like a cream that sets into a powder. Any mistakes you make can be easily blended out, unlike powders that tend to be less forgiving.
2) Keep it looking natural
Here’s the hard truth: “Instagram contouring” will look scary in real life. Those looks you see online involve a lot of products, and no way that’s going to translate well under natural light. Trust us on this: go for subtlety, i.e. the end goal should be what your face looks like when the sunset light hits it in all the right ways. That means products with a less intense colour payoff, that go on more sheer to just subtly enhance your features.

And we’ve found two nifty products that will help with both pointers above. Enter the Revlon Insta-Blush and Revlon PhotoReady Insta-Fix Highlighting Stick, which  join the Revlon PhotoReady Insta-Fix Makeup to make contouring as insta-nt as possible. Both come in a cream stick format that changes into a powder on the skin, so you can just swipe them on your face and then blend (point #1, check); and have a sheer and smooth formula that dispenses natural-looking colour (point #2, also check). If you’re concerned about covering up flaws, the PhotoReady makeup also happens to have a light filtering technology that cleverly manipulates light to make your skin look retouched.

revlon 1

The blush comes in 4 shades and the highlighter in 2, which put together have fair to deep skin tones covered – in this case, fewer options is better. And to make it even simpler, Revlon’s also done the pairing of the blush and highlighter for various skin tones, so you can zoom in straight on what works for your own skin.

Meet the Cushion Foundation That'll Give You Flawless Coverage All Day Long

Since its introduction to the realm of beauty, the innovative yet humble cushion compact has gone on to reign supreme in the industry, making it one of the most convenient ways for us to get ready and glow when we’re absolutely pressed for time. Not all cushion foundations are made the same, though. Some of them can get patchy and wear off as the day drags on, while others fail to sop up the shine, leaving us looking a little more… greasy than glowy.
Now, we may be trapped in a perpetual sauna for most of the year, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t look our best in this unforgiving heat. Well, ETUDE HOUSE has heard our cries and they’ve created a new addition to the Any Cushion collection. Say hello to your new BFF (Base Friends Forever), the ETUDE HOUSE Any Cushion All Day Perfect SPF50+/PA+++. This clinically-tested cushion foundation will hide the most common issues that plague our faces, such as gaping pores, flushed skin, and those cursed raccoon eyes. All you’ll need is a single layer of foundation all over your face for pristine, natural-looking coverage that lasts all through the day for 24 hours.

Since Koreans are always one step ahead when it comes to innovative beauty, the Any Cushion All Day Perfect also features an advanced roll-spread technology which helps the foundation adhere to the skin better, which is why all you’ll need is a single application that’s not going to budge for 24 hours.

Available in six shades, the cushion is also equipped with the Any Fitting Puff, an applicator that’s made with elastic microfibre to ensure an even, seamless finish. To combat the inevitable sweat and sheen that occurs during the day, the foundation is formulated to be sweat-proof, so don’t worry – your makeup’s not gonna melt off your face as you brave the glaring sun. A cushion foundation that gives a fresh finish without a single touchup throughout the day is exactly what we need in our makeup collection right now.

See How Rozz Brings A Whole Lot Of Attitude To The Tiffany HardWear Collection

Long revered for dainty jewellery and those classic engagement rings, we’ll have you know that the latest Tiffany & Co. is just as much about pieces that we want to own — only this time, they come with a hard-hitting rebellious streak. We’re talking about Tiffany HardWear, of course, the edgy line worn by Lady Gaga who’s an apt face for this unexpected collection.

tiffanyhardwear1

Why unexpected? Well, the line makes a departure from the more feminine styles, like the sleek Tiffany T, that we expect from this storied brand, and this time, they’re inspired by the spirit of New York City and its powerful, urban soul. What we see are chain links, padlocks and ball motifs on rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces that perfectly capture the industrialism of the vibrant city, resulting in a look that’s both clean and refined while also remaining ironically rough and tough.

tiffanyhardwear3 copy

Take this pair of triple drop earrings, for instance. There’s a modern, graphic allure to the piece, with the simplicity of three circles subtly shifting in scale, yet the oversized piece is daring — the balls and chains though have a more rockstar appeal. We’re also told that this was the most popular design during the VIP launch at New York, probably because Lady Gaga looks so good in it with barely-there nude makeup, and partly because it’s just way too versatile; they work, whether it’s with a leather jacket, plain jeans or a glamorous gown, so obviously we had to get those very designs right into our office for a photoshoot.

When it came down to thinking of a personality who also embodies the fierce and fearless spirit of Lady Gaga though, we naturally turned to one of our NYLON cover girls — Rozz, or, Rosalyn Lee. A familiar face as host, radio DJ at Lush 99.5FM, and presenter at Clicknetwork, you’ll know her for her unapologetic public personality, someone who makes bold choices as a person, but also in her fashion and makeup, with a “soft” side for all things black. Peer deeper, and you’ll find that the girl does reveal a lot of her more introspective side through Instagram — yes, there are shots of herself, though in professional self-portraits, but you’ll also find a treasure trove of #RozzQuotes, a platform where she shares her thoughts on anything, life-inspiring or mundane, or things that drive her, including this gem: “inspired by the fear of being average”.

It’s only apt, then, that with this many standout pieces in the Tiffany HardWear collection , all chockful of attitude, we just had to style them, kinda like what we did here…

These Fruit Slice Face Masks Will Help You Nail The Art Of Multi-Masking

The art of masking involves more than just casually slapping on an entire sheet mask on your face. Granted that that’s really how masking should actually be, but we have to say, if you’re still sticking to single sheets while hoping to soothe multiple skin woes… you’re a tad behind the times. Multi-masking is the technique that beauty gurus have been using, in fact, customising the types of masks that goes onto your face can help tackle specific skin problems — all at the same time.
It may sound confusing for the ones who have yet to try it, but trust us, multi-masking is actually pretty darn easy. Say, should you have fine lines round the upper parts of your face, a half-mask that’s meant for anti-aging purposes could be applied there. And if you’re looking to combat acne for the areas round your cheeks and chin, another half-mask with acne-clearing purposes could be used. Basically, the smaller the mask, the greater the room for customisation. That way you save both time and resources, and get double the skincare benefits!

Untitled-1

These masks from Kocostar though, are possibly the cutest sheet masks we’ve seen in a long while. It’s pretty hard to differentiate masks, but not impossible. Tony Moly has some pretty adorable animal-faced ones, and Petite Amie has some quirky emoji ones too. They all have one thing in common — all of them come in a single sheet that’s meant for your entire face. The masks from Kocostar though, are a tad different. There are actually twelve “slices” of masks in each pack.
Now, that ought to have you sitting upright. The masks in each pack come in palm-sized sheets, decorated to look like the active ingredient that the mask is infused with. That means you’re gonna be welcomed with twelve slices of say, cucumber, upon opening up each pack. Go ahead and plaster them all over your face and snap a million selfies for the ‘gram while you’re at it.

A post shared by Dymii Lim (@dymiilim) on

A post shared by Anita Maya (@anitamayaa) on

The entertainment value isn’t all there is to a pack of Kocostar masks. They take multi-masking to a new level — you can pick from four different masks depending on which skin problems you intend to tackle. So select what you need: the lemon mask that helps combat skin dullness can perhaps go all over your cheeks and forehead, while the tomato one which has collagen and fights against signs of aging can go along your nose, and around the eyes. You’re likely to end up with a full face of fruit slices, which honestly, makes masking so much more fun.
And the best part, at least for us, is how crazily inexpensive these masks cost — a pack of twelve is only going to set you back $6. Tell us this isn’t the best deal you’ve heard all day.

Achieve Facial Harmony With Tarte’s New Amazonian Clay Mask

Tarte’s done it. Again. Just a few days back we were gushing over their new Clay Stick Foundation, which is packed chockfull of skin-loving stuff, including their famed ingredient, the Amazonian clay. The latest addition to their family is nothing makeup related; but instead focused on skincare, to create the healthy base for your makeup to glide on beautifully.
Now, Tarte isn’t a brand that’s foreign to skincare. They already have quite a number of Holy Grail-worthy products for our complexions — just to name a couple, the Drink of H2O Hydrating Boost Moisturiser does provide that shot of moisture our skin needs; while the Dive Deep Cleansing Gel serves as a non-greasy and brightening face cleanser and waterproof makeup remover. What they don’t have, are products that incorporate their one star ingredient, the Amazonian clay; and facial masks. Until now, that is.

Tarte-Tight-&-Bright-Clay-Multi-Mask
Untitled-1

We hope you’ve managed to catch our drift by now — what Tarte should have put out, years ago, given their success when it comes to Amazonian clay, is in fact Amazonian clay masks. Y’know, a step up from the usual ones that we use. But as usual, where’s the fun in a basic tub of clay? Taste has instead very cleverly pushed the boundaries of masking, in fact, the idea of multi-masking — and launched their Tight & Bright Clay Multi-Mask.
What this tub of product has, are actually two different types of masks. There’s the Purple Detoxifying & Purifying Exfoliating Mask, for the obvious reason of cleaning out pores and getting rid of blackheads. It’s formulated with jojoba, sweet almond and avocado oil to keep your skin moisturised too. The other side, the slightly flashier one, holds the Gold Hydrating and Firming Mask. It’s of a gel-type texture, and is especially soothing on the delicate areas of your face, such as under the eyes and around your nose. These masks can be used in tandem — like the yin-and-yang of masking — when you really need to target specific areas fast, or used one after another for a luxurious Sunday night pamper sesh.
For now, prices are set at US$40 and the mask will launch on tartecosmetics.com on June 6. We’ll keep you updated as to when they’ll be available in local Sephora stores.

Magikarp Jump Is The Mobile Game We Never Knew We Wanted

If people were Pokémon, we’d like to think that we’d be something cool like Blastoise or Charizard, but in reality we’re probably closer to a Magikarp, splashing our way through life in hopes of one day “evolving” to the best version of ourselves (we don’t mean transforming into a huge water dragon, though…it’s not a perfect metaphor, but you get the point). Despite being quite possibly the most useless Pokémon in the entire franchise, the humble orange fish has — for some unfathomable reason — gained a cult following over the years, and it looks like the Pokémon company is capitalising on that popularity with the sudden release of new mobile game called Magikarp Jump.

Magic04

Part Tamagotchi, part Neko Atsume and part Pokémon Red, Magikarp Jump — as you might have already guessed from the name — is all about Magikarps. The game takes place in the adorably-named Hoppy Town, where the Professor Oak-esque Mayor Karp immediately bestows you with a Magikarp and tasks you to battle other Magikarps in leagues to restore glory to the town. Because Magikarps can’t legit fight, however, the “battles” involve seeing whose can jump the highest…it’s an absurd narrative, but then again you are playing a game centered around a fish, after all.
Magic02 Magic03

While Pokémon GO requires some finesse when swiping those poké balls, Magikarp Jump is a zero-skill game — from training to battling to encounters, the outcome of everything is random, and you’re pretty much just tagging along for the ride. The good news, however, is that it’s a pretty fun ride: the game’s self-aware tone is sure to put a smile on your face, and watching your Magikarps swim in its pond as it eats an ever-replenishing supply of berries can be quite the therapeutic experience.
Magic07

Wait, did we say Magikarps? Yup, after your trusty fish friend reaches its maximum level, they have to retire, and you’ll be given another one to restart the cycle of training and battling all over again. The cool part is that there are several variations of Magikarp to collect, so there’s an element of gotta catch em’ all to the game…the bad news, however, is that if you’re unlucky enough, your Magikarps can die, so you better think twice about getting that berry unless you want to risk a Pidgeotto swooping in and whisking it away to the big fish tank in the sky.

I THOUGHT THIS WAS A KID’S GAME?!

Magikarp Jump is available right now, and can be downloaded for free on both the App Store and Google Play. If you’re starting to get bored of Pokémon GO but still want to get your Pokémon fix, Magikarp Jump is definitely an alternative to consider, and unlike its predecessor this one doesn’t require you to get out of the house to play. Now if you’ll excuse us, there’s a certain pet fish that we have to go feed…

How to Style Mesh for Any Occasion

When it comes to styling mesh and see-through pieces, twin sisters/DJ duo Simi and Haze Khadra does them best. Just see for yourself:

However, here in Singapore, it can be quite intimidating to try mesh and see-through pieces out since they can be pretty seductive. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with us girls wanting to exude feminism or dressing up to feel sexy. But y’know days where you glam yourself up and your friends be like: “Why are you so dressed up when we’re just meeting for dinner?” or worse, having some creepy uncles staring at you on the train. Girls, we feel ya and we just have one advice: Gurl, you do you.
Nonetheless, here are some tips on how you can work with mesh/sheer/see-through pieces:
1. For a chill girls’-night-out at the taco bar
Layer a band tee over a mesh turtleneck and put on a pair of raw hem jeans and pointed booties. Alternatively, you can replace the jeans with a satin slip dress and tie the band tee into a knot at the front.

2. Informal work parties/events at night
White blouse and pencil shirts? Boring. A structured tube jumpsuit over a sheer turtleneck piece gives a professional look without crossing over the line. You can also opt for work pants or wide-legged trousers and slip a camisole over the sheer piece, tucking everything in. We absolutely love these “girl boss” looks – something formal but with a subtle tinge of sexiness. Super chic.

3. When out on a date
You can always get inspiration on how to style your clothes just by watching any K-dramas or variety shows. Korean actress Hwang Seung-Un is seen on a variety show, keeping it classy by wearing an embroidered pajama blouse over a see-through ruffled piece. Very feminine. Very dainty.

4. Work out in style
Long gone are the carefree days where you can just grab a pair of FBT shorts and head out for a run (they’re really comfortable though!). Wearing tights to the gym is the in-thing right now. Who on earth started the trend to wear something so tight-fitting when you’re sweating your ass out, anyway? Well, at least we have a greater variety of tights to choose from and that includes breathable tights with mesh panels at the side, venting the excess heat for increased comfort. When you are done with the gym, look effortless by pairing your tights with a slouchy plain white t-shirt.

5. Let’s go to the beach, each
Don’t feel comfortable in a bikini? Throw over a mesh crop top or dress and you can forget about dem tummy folds.

6. If mesh/see-through/sheer pieces don’t fit in with your usual aesthetics, perhaps you might want to consider giving accessories a go. Here are some items that provide a mesh accent that is not as overpowering:

There you have it! There are so many ways to style see-through items so don’t be afraid to play around and rock the mesh trend this season.

NYLON Team Picks: The Stuff That Keeps Our Brows Looking Decent

Eyebrows: one of the easiest things on your face to mess up. We’ve all been there – making it all the way through a day only to realise one “tail” has already been smudged off, or all of our brow makeup has faded into oblivion, or our arches were never even in the first place. If you find yourself fretting over your arches pretty much every day, fret not, because we’ve all been there, and it really is a matter of trial and error. Through our hits and misses, at least the NYLON Singapore team has emerged with our below brow picks. Our brows may not be perfect, but at least these products get us pretty damn close.

shu uemura brow:sword
$53 for case + refill; $28 for refill, available at shu uemura stores and counters.

shu uemura brow sword

I’ve been using shu uemura’s Hard Formula eyebrow pencil for at least a decade — mainly because it’s so good I refuse to use anything else. This past week I decided to be adventurous and try something new — the shu uemura brow sword…and I love it! Although it’s the same shade as the Hard Formula version I use (seal brown), it comes off less intense and a lot softer. I like that I don’t need to sharpen the triangular tip, and bonus: it has a spoolie at the other end. Anyway, the whole reason I wanted to give this a try is because the pencil end is actually a cartridge, and I can use it without the holder as a nice, short brow pencil that I can bring around in my travel makeup kit. Good tip, right?

– Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief

Sometimes I indulge myself in feeling like a samurai with this – it’s called a brow sword after all, and armed with it, I can create both precise edges and fill in the gaps between my brow hairs. I’m generally not too fussy about perfectly arched brows, whatever looks natural, so I like that the at, square edge makes for super easy drawing. I can get my brows done in seconds.
– Amelia Tan, Associate Editor

Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil
$7.90, available at selected Watsons.

I’d like to think that I have generally acceptable brows without the use of any brow products thanks to half of my gene pool, but the thought of getting them shaped via threading or waxing just seems like too much effort for me. That’s when this product comes in. It’s highly pigmented and goes on so smoothly that it only takes me about a minute or so to define my arches. While I’ve never had a problem with the endurance of brow products, it’s probably good to add that their appearance is maintained throughout the day, withstanding the humidity, until I remove my makeup when I get home.
– Patrene Mathieu, Designer

NYX Micro Brow Pencil
$15, available at NYX stores, Sephora and sephora.sg.

nyx micro brow

This has been touted as the best dupe for the famed Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz for good reason. The skinny tip of the pencil makes for great precision work — it’s easy to carve out your desired brow shape, and doesn’t pose as much of a trouble when filling in the sparsely-haired areas at the front of the brows. The formula is one that’s relatively drier compared to other brow products that I’ve tried, but I honestly do prefer it that way because it doesn’t attempt to melt and slide off my face in the treacherous Singapore weather. My only gripe is that the pencil does run out pretty quickly, but hey, it’s only $15 a pop, so that really isn’t too much of an issue.
– Chelsea Tang, Editorial Assistant

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade
US$18, available on anastasiabeverlyhills.com.

abh dipbrow pomade

Do not be deceived by the size of this small pot of pomade, it actually lasted me for ages and I’m not even halfway done with the product. It is waterproof and stays on all day, but I’m thinking of moving on to the Brow Wiz after hearing rave reviews about its precision and ease of use.
– Phyllis Guo, Editorial Assistant

Jane Iredale PureBrow Brow Gel in Clear
$32, available on beautyresourcesstore.com.

jane iredale

Brow pencil aside, I’ve never actually considered other brow products, until I discovered brow gels. My favourite used to be the Urban Decay Brow Tamer, which does a decent job at defining and holding my brow hairs in place, but with daily use, it started drying out the skin around my brows. So when I found out that Emma Watson uses this natural, clear brow gel that’s readily available on Zalora, I added it to my virtual cart faster than my brain could process it. This one by Jane Iredale has a much more hydrating formula than most brow gels because of its glycerin base, but it does the same job and with consistent use, I noticed baby brow hairs sprouting up in areas I assumed were permanently barren. No regrets here at all.
– Jade Yeo, Writer

LANEIGE Eyebrow Cushion-cara
$36, available at LANEIGE boutiques and counters.

Full disclosure: when I first saw this product, I did not expect it to work well at all, since liquid eyebrow formulas tend to be hard to control. Upon trying it though, it instantly joined the ranks of the all-time best brow products I’ve tried – and every other beauty journalist who’s tried it agrees. The liquid-to-powder formula goes on very evenly, and the double-ended applicator makes it even easier to apply. I first fill in the outer half of my brows with the darker shade and using the angled brush, then comb the lighter shade over the entire brow with the bristle end.
– Tami Lai, Associate Editor

K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo Real Lasting 2-Way Eyebrow Liner
$23.90, available at selected Watsons and Sasa.
k palette 2 way eyebrow

With the current trend in brow products, now even those who aren’t genetically blessed can have full and arched brows. Grooming my eyebrows has been an essential step in my daily routine since they were first exposed to the world (when I finally grew out my straight-across bangs – I had them for 22 years). Brows can really help to define your face when you have small eyes. This eyebrow liquid has two sides, a brush tip which is perfect for drawing on realistic hairs, and a powder applicator to add more definition. “Lasting” is an accurate label – it even stays on in the rain. Heaven forbid one be left browless.
– Joanne Cheah, Designer

Why You Should Add an Ice Facial to Your Beauty Routine

This may sound a little strange, and maybe a little unnecessary too, but ice could be the missing element from your skincare routine. Stay with me now. Also known as cryotherapy (from the Greek words “cryo,” meaning cold; and “therapy,” which means to cure), ice has been utilised in the medical field since the 17th century to expedite the healing process of tissue damage. More recently though, it’s made a name for itself within the beauty community in the form of ice facials.
While there aren’t any bodily aches and pains that require the attention of cryotherapy, my puffy pink face is in dire need of help. Calmer skin, tightened pores, and a slimmer face are just a few of the things an ice facial promises, which is why the sceptic in me has decided to test it out and uncover the truth. But honestly, if the secret to Kate Moss’ glow is to dunk an entire face in a tub of ice, then I’m already 80% sold.
By Jade Yeo

File_002 (5)

Thanks to the winning synergy of sensitive, acne-prone, combination skin, my face is often flushed, riddled with red splotches and scars that take aeons to lighten up. Merge that with late night Skype video calls and a diet that needs serious fixing, and you’ve got yourself a face that’ll make your mirror wanna smash itself into pieces soon as you walk in front of it in the mornings. Okay, that’s enough self-deprecation for 12 hours. Here’s how my at-home ice facial went.
ice

Filling an entire sink with water and ice seems a bit wasteful and excessive, so instead, I grabbed a handful of ice and placed them in a clean washcloth. That just seems like an easier way to go about an ice facial – there won’t be too much of a mess to clean up around the sink area, and I can give myself a slow massage with the bundle of ice as I go along.
ice facial

Makeup-free, red and blotchy.

Some people might find the sudden cool temperature annoying, but not me – I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this DIY facial. I worked around my eyes first, because that’s where most of the puffiness likes to hang out. The ice took away the extra baggage almost instantly, which was what I expected, really. When a cold temperature is applied onto the skin, it constricts blood vessels to bring down the inflammation and boost circulation, which is why I also noticed less redness on my face. It even seemed to shrink my gaping pores and give me an overall glow – something I genuinely wasn’t expecting.
I followed this up with a swipe of toner and some moisturiser before applying my foundation. Because the ice reduced the amount of redness of my face, I only needed a tiny pump of foundation instead of my usual two. Pretty miraculous, I’d say.
VERDICT:
It works. If you’re looking for a quick fix to hide your fatigue from late nights and early mornings, this is probably your best bet. It’s safe for all skin types, it’s easy to do, and everything you need for this facial can be found at home. So give an ice facial a shot – 10 t0 15 minutes of this will help revive your skin (and wake you up) for sure.

MUJI’s Circulator Fan is the Lifesaver You Need in Hot and Humid Singapore

Day or night, rain or shine, there’s one thing that’s constant about Singapore: our blasted tropical humidity.
Because c’mon, how many times have you taken a shower and stepped out of the house, only to have sweat droplets sticking to the back of your shirt after a few minutes. And how many times have you come back after a long day, wanting to rest and relax, only to find that your home is stuffy as hell.
Sure, air conditioning helps. But what if the weather is simply too hot, or God forbid, what if your air con unit breaks down? To prevent further devastation of suffering from Singapore’s relentless heat, MUJI has what is called the “Circulator Fan”.

4548076319948_15_1260

Coming in a clean white colourway, with a sleek, minimalist design, the Circulator Fan is meant to achieve high-output of airflow with minimal electricity consumption.
It does more than what regular fans do too. For instance, the Circulator Fan balances out the room temperature, and even improves the air circulation in a room by keeping the airflow in motion, all with lesser noise.
4548076319948_20_1260

Of course, this cooling effect is increased when used together with an air conditioner. For the most effective usage, just tilt the Circulator Fan at a 45°
angle facing the centre of the room, along the same wall where the air conditioner is located. This ensures that cool air is spread to every nook and cranny in your room.
Here’s a diagram of how it should work:
section02

If you’re looking to score the Circulator Fan though, it’s not going to come cheap. The fan is retailing for $139 at MUJI’s website, and there are definitely cheaper options out there. Still, it’s all about combating the heat at the end of the day, and you’d be hard pressed to find a more efficient fan than this beauty.

Brace Yourself: These Wonder Woman Brushes Are Going To Help You Perfect Your Game Face

With every great film comes a set of great makeup brushes, and the same can be said about the upcoming Wonder Woman franchise. The movie is set to be released in theatres on May 31, and just like the whole Beauty And The Beast situation, everyone’s pumped — and aggressively hoarding all the collectables that they can get their hands on. Well, we could hardly blame them; for one, Gal Gadot is so damn smokin’ hot, two, Wonder Woman is pretty much the first female-led superhero film, so as girls we ought to show our support as much as possible, and three, with limited edition brushes that look so sleek, we can’t think of any reason to not say yes.

Luxie Beauty has been known for their incredibly luxurious brushes — each piece is likely to set you back at least US$20 — but that’s the price to pay to have brushes as soft as a baby butt grazing against your skin when you do your makeup. The Wonder Woman Face Brush Set comes as a partnership with Warner Brothers, and there are five confidence-boosting brushes for you to put on your game face every day with ease.
There will be a Flat Kabuki, a Beauty Buffer, an Angled Buffer, a Tapered Kabuki, a Fan Brush and a compact mirror. The wands of the brushes will be decked out in a metallic red, with a bronze Wonder Woman logo strapped round the middle. The compact mirror looks very much like the shield that our heroine uses, just in a mini size this time. All these brushes are specially curated so that you makeup blends out flawlessly and beautifully, and in Luxie’s words — “show off your inner Wonder Woman to the world!”
wonder_woman_face_brush_set__20832.1495067701.1280.1280

The set goes for US$95 a box on luxiebeauty.com; a price that’s pretty steep for a set of basic face brushes, But don’t forget, a single piece of Luxie Beauty costs you at least US$20 a pop, so for the five that you’re getting, plus a mirror, it’s indeed quite a steal.
International shipping isn’t available, so a parcel forwarding service might have to be employed for your brushes to be brought to Singapore.

The Moody Girls Temporary Colour Mask is The Shortcut to Instagram-Worthy Pastel Hair

Whether you got influenced by a cool character you saw on television, were having a quarter life crisis or simply wanted to change up your look, we’ve all had moments where we’ve wanted to dye our hair in some outrageous colour in an attempt to break out of the monotony of everyday life. Actually going ahead and doing it, however, is an entirely different matter altogether — the process can cost hundreds of dollars, an obscene amount of time, and at the end of it all it might not even turn out to be as life-changing as you had envisioned it to be. If you’ve ever wished that there was some kind of fuss-free instant hair dye or something, wish no more, because one product claims to be exactly that.

Dye04 Dye03

The brainchild of UK-born, LA-based hairstylist Benjamin Mohapi, the “Moody Girls Temporary Colour Mask” offers the sounds-too-good-to-be-true prospect of achieving an Instagram-worthy pastel hair colour without the hassle and commitment that typically comes with it. Available in lilac, pink, yellow, orange and green, the mask can (allegedly) be easily applied after shampooing your hair, and will conveniently (or inconveniently, depending on how you see it) fade away after three to six washes. An ash blue one month followed by a dusty pink the next? Now that’s something we can get on board with.
Dye05 Dye01 Dye02

Available now at the Moody Girls website, a tub of the stuff will set you back US$28, and there’s a US$15 discount if you’re crazy enough to buy all five colours at once. The fine print on the product page does read “Warning: Highly porous hair may hold colour longer. For use on light colored hair only”, however, so it might not be as effective on our naturally dark Asian hair (you might even have to bleach it first), but at $40 it’s still much cheaper and less permanent than the salon route, so there’s no harm in giving a shot, we guess.
