Explore Singapore like Never Before at this “Ladies Only” E-Scooter Event

E-scooters are literally everywhere in Singapore. Still, how often would you get the chance to ride them on roads that have no cars? Zilch, that’s the answer. Well, at least that’s the case for most days, except for this Sunday (May 28), where a “ladies-only” e-scooter event will be held at the CBD as part of Car-Free Sunday.
Organised by electric scooter and bike company Falcon PEV, and titled “Heels for Wheels”, participants are supposed to ditch their heels for wheels at this event; wheels being the e-scooters, and heels, well, being your heels. Other fun activities like mini-races and prize giveaways will also happen throughout the day.

HeelsForWheels by FalconPEV

Besides experiencing how car-free roads are like, riders will get to tour the Singapore Musical Box Museum for free, as well as score a sweet goodie bag that’s worth $80. Best of all, signing up is easy. All you’ve got to do is head to this link and pay a small $3 registration fee to become a participant.
There’s one slight caveat though. You’ll need your own e-scooter to join in the fun. But not to worry, that’s where we come in. We’ll be giving 10 lucky winners the chance to ride at this event for free, with rented e-scooters provided by Falcon PEV. Winners will also receive an $80 goodie bag and will be chosen at random from our Facebook page.
For more information and updates, visit the Heels for Wheels Facebook event page here.

This One-of-a-Kind Pokémon Watch Costs a Quarter of a Million Dollars

We here at NYLON like to think of ourselves as pretty big Pokémon fans (some of us still spend a good part of our lunch hour playing Pokémon GO), but we’re not sure if we’d be willing to pay a quarter of a million dollars for a Pokémon-themed watch. Yup, after making headlines last year with a US$20,000 Pikachu watch, Swiss luxury watch brand RJ-Romain Jerome is back at it again with yet another timepiece centered around everyone’s favourite pocket monsters, and this one comes with an unbelievable US$258,000 price tag.

Pokemon01 Pokemon02

To be fair, the watch does look pretty sweet, and we’d probably consider buying one if it didn’t cost…y’know, the down payment for a four room flat. The 48mm case and alligator strap are both decked in an always-stylish matte black, with the latter rocking some contrasting yellow and blue stitching as a subtle homage to the iconic Pokémon logo. The star of the show, of course, is the Pokémon-filled watch face, which features a slew of fan favourites that include Charmander, Eevee and Magikarp, to name a few (unsurprisingly, Pikachu gets to stand right in the centre). Throw in a lightning bolt-shaped Tourbillon into the mix, and you have a watch that’s as nostalgic as it is expensive.
Pokemon04 Pokemon03

It’s said that there’s only one “Tourbillon Pokémon” watch in existence, so owning this highly limited edition piece will definitely establish you as one of the biggest — if not *the* biggest — Pokémon fans in the world. We can think of literally hundreds of other ways to spend a quarter of a million bucks, however, so unless you’ve struck the lottery or something (and even then spending all your money on a single watch sounds like a bad idea), you’re probably better off showing your love for the franchise by replaying Pokémon Red again.

We Found Some Dupes To Charlotte Tilbury's Most Popular Nude Lipstick

For those of you who have yet to get on board the Charlotte Tilbury boat, we suggest you mentally prepare yourself for some serious rose gold envy before hopping on to her website, or… turn away and never look back. Because coming from people who’ve experienced it first-hand, rose gold packaging is something that one can get drunk on.
But we’re not here to write an ode about how amazingly the brand has managed to nail their luxurious line of offerings, be it the opulent rose gold goodness, or just how downright decadent their product formulas are. We could, but many others have already done so — and we’ll gladly leave that honour to the rest of the Internet. For now, we’re zooming in straight onto one particular standout shade that won the hearts of well, basically everyone.

pillow-talk

Say hi to the Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk, where the source of the rosy hue has graced the pouts of celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Emma Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow during the Met Gala earlier this month.
It’s not hard to see how, and why this one pinky nude managed to charm the pants off beauty junkies and celebrities alike. It’s an effortless colour, right off the bat. A warm toned mauve-y pink that’s essentially your everyday go-to MLBB, it belongs to that realm of “universally flattering” hues that looks good on all skin tones. Not the mention, the perfect shade that adds a healthy radiance to your complexion.

A post shared by Met Gala (@metgalaofficial) on

Emma Roberts looked stunning at this year’s Met Gala.

So by now you might be wondering, “if you’re so in love, why not just… get it?” Well, good things don’t always come our way, as we like to put it. For one, Charlotte Tilbury isn’t available in Singapore (yet, hopefully), and as much as we’d like to get our hands on her lipsticks online, there’s always the exorbitant shipping charges that gross us out to no end. For two, a single lippie is going to set you back a whopping USD$34 (~$49), so unless you’re looking to #treatyoself, that pretty penny isn’t anything that we’re willing to shell out on any other ordinary day.

But lucky for us, there’s always the world of dupes — granted that we may not get the coveted rose gold component, nor the bragging rights of wearing the exact same lipstick as Alexa Chung — well, at least you get to sport a similar hue without breaking the bank. And after all, that’s all that really matters in the end, yes? We’ve picked out some of the closest dupes that you might want to consider before committing yourself to your very own Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk:

L-R: L’Oreal Rouge Magique in Monte Blanc $19.90, available at Watsons and Guardian stores, as well as selected department stores. Lottie London Slay All Day Liquid Lipstick in #TBT, $12.91, available on asos.com. Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Double The Lip in Nude Scandal, $35, available at Sephora and the Benefit store. "Detachable Jeans" Are Now a Thing And We're So Done

Have you ever worn a pair of jeans out and thought to yourself “man, wouldn’t it be great if I could remove about three quarters of these pants and wear them like a pair of shorts like, right now?” No? Well, apparently Paris-based brand Y/Project doesn’t care what you think, and has created what could be the world’s first 2-in-1 jeans / shorts hybrid, proving that just because you thought of it first, doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea. And we were thinking that Balenciaga was bad…

Jeans01 Jeans02

If you thought that a pair of “Detachable Cut-Out Front Jeans” would look as dumb as they sound, well…you’d be right. First off, the shorts portion looks so uncomfortable that we’re getting a wedgie just by looking at it, and the peculiar curved cutting makes the pockets so shallow that we probably couldn’t fit a 50-cent coin inside without having it fall out after taking a single step. Perhaps the biggest offender of this Frankenstein piece, however, is the gap that shows up when you join the two pieces together, which exposes the skin at your crotch and right under your butt…we’d prefer to leave some things to the imagination, thank you very much.
Jeans03
We’ve heard of “butt cheek shorts”, but this is just ridiculous.

You might be thinking that such an avant-garde piece would at least come with an affordable price tag to make the look a little easier to swallow, but here’s one last kicker: they cost a whopping six hundred and thirty six dollars, and one size is already sold out. Yeah, we’re probably going to sit this one out, but if you feel the need to be the centre of attention at all times, head on to Opening Ceremony to grab a pair.

The Tooth Gem Trend Is Going To Give You An Extra Sparkly Set Of Pearly Whites

Once again, this week’s Instagram trend was welcomed with furrowed brows during the team’s weekly Editorial meeting. How tooth gems even became a thing, we don’t know, but when celebs like Katy Perry and Hailey Baldwin flashed their pearly whites that came accompanied with little sparkling gems, suddenly everyone had to get themselves their very own tooth accessory.

getting MET ready 💍📸 by @renellaice

A post shared by Hailey Baldwin (@haileybaldwin) on

According to PopSugar, the trend isn’t anything new at all. In fact, putting semiprecious stones on teeth go way back to the times of the ancient Mayans, when crystals were used to adorned teeth, in a manner not unlike our own contemporary version. Grills then came into the picture, and folks got them fixed in to exude a scuffy, back-street vibe. The tooth gems are a more subtle version of the metal grills, for folks that prefer a less flashy style.
Affixing gems on your teeth isn’t an easy affair. To start off, a dentist (or a “Tooth Gem Specialist”) is required for you to install them gems onto your teeth. Professional and industry-level equipment is needed, because the adhesive used is going to last you for six months to a year before touch-ups are required. This is nothing like applying falsies — the adhesive needs to be professionally put on to seal off any bacteria from entering that particular spot where your gem will be, and your dentist will have to triple check if the metal accessory is put on properly. That means the gem isn’t supposed to hinder any of your daily activities, such as brushing of teeth and eating.

A post shared by Carmen🌸 (@carmen.dee) on

Once that’s settled, you have to decide on the type of gem that’s going to be displayed. You have to pick one that does not turn rusty at all, which means… a pretty penny will have to be spent on real gold, silver, diamond or crystal. And you’ll have to get yet another professional to have your piece of metal cut to your desired form — such as Katy Perry’s Nike tooth gem.
And before you even commit to a six month tooth accessory, you’ll have to first think about how good the gems are going to look on yourself. As superficial as this sounds, tooth gems are likely to only look flattering when your pearly whites are, well, white. Anything less than white (ahem, yellow), will result in the tooth gem looking very much like a piece of sweet-and-sour pork that got stuck between the nooks of your teeth.

It’s very much like a three-step checklist. If you passed them all, hurray! You’re now ready for your very own tooth gem. But if you’re still debating, there’s still a way “try” out the trend and have it up on IG, no less. Simply Photoshop a little piece of metal onto your tooth, and don’t forget the add the sparkle. From afar, no one will ever be the wiser.

Why You Can Trust This Doctor With Your Sensitive Skin

So many brands out there claim their products are safe for sensitive skin; but if your skin’s especially sensitive, there are plenty of products out there that can still wreak havoc on your skin, even if they’ve been labelled “suitable for sensitive skin” (our writer Jade would know).
That’s why when we sat down for the press presentation by Taiwanese skincare brand Dr. Wu and were told that their skincare products, touted as “clinical skincare”, were made of sensitive skin, that didn’t make much of an impression – plenty of other brands have told us the same thing, so can you blame us?
This perspective started to shift a little when we sat down for an interview with Dr. Wu himself. Yes, there’s an actual Dr. Wu behind the brand name; full name Dr. Wu Ying-Chin, and he’s a dermatologist, renowned in Taiwan, and in 2003 he started this brand together with his eldest son, Eric Wu. The brand Dr. Wu has since become one of the most prominent Taiwanese beauty brands outside of its homeland, known for its products that are supposed to replicate the effects of clinical skin treatments.

dr wu 1

What made up sit up and really pay attention was when Dr. Wu revealed this: that he himself suffers from very sensitive skin – we’re talking eczema-level kind of sensitivities.
“Our family is a family of atopic dermatitis,” Dr. Wu says, using the medical term for eczema. Him and his two sons suffer from the condition, and he reveals it’s also part of what motivated him to become a dermatologist. He told us that for them, it manifests as itchiness, and “oozing skin”; but we saw no trace of that on his flawless skin.
It’s thanks to years of using his own products of course, he tells us. A personal understanding of what is truly “sensitive skin”, as well as years of working with patients who suffer from similar conditions (Barbie Hsu, or “Big S”, is one of them), has led him to mandate his products meet two requirements: Be safe, and be efficacious. “They should have a highly potent content, but not be irritating to the skin. This is the major difference of our products.”
To ensure the formulations are truly safe, the brands implements testing periods for each one, and does not use any alcohol, fragrances, or animal products. It also helps that Dr. Wu runs them by his patients too. “Our products are quite different from the other companies. We use it in the clinic first, especially for diseased skin. When the diseased skin can accept it, I think it’s no problem for healthy skin,” he explains.
One of the “safe” ingredients that the brand has become known for is the classic hyaluronic acid; by now, they’ve developed a “fifth generation hyaluronic acid” known as the HyaluComplex, a patented technology. “It keeps our serum very smooth, easily absorbed, and not irritating to the skin. It also penetrates deeper into the epidermal cells,” explains Dr. Wu.
hyalucomplex range
Another well-known ingredient when it comes to Dr. Wu products is mandelic acid, a kind of alpha hydroxy acid that is used for skin renewal. One of the more popular products (ranked no. 2, in fact) is the Intensive Renewal Serum With Mandelic Acid 18%, which mimics a chemical peel and is to be used once a week to refine skin texture. Dr. Wu explains that mandelic acid is a larger molecule than other similar acids and permeates the skin at a slower rate, which helps reduce the risk of the skin reacting badly to it. It’s an ingredient that Dr. Wu’s been using it on his patients for more than 5 years already.
mandelic acid
And now, there’s the new Daily Renewal Serum With Mandelic Acid, with a gentler formula that was designed for dry and sensitive skin. As the name implies, this one can be used every day, and even together with the once-a-week Intensive Renewal Serum if you want to double up on the mandelic acid. “New skin will come,” promises Dr Wu. What we can say about it is that this watery serum feels ridiculously silky, and with a few days of daily use so far, our skin’s feeling promisingly smooth indeed.
daily renewal serum

During the interview, we also found out that Dr. Wu is 71 years old this year; and we have never seen a 71-year-old with skin this line-free. His wife, who’s 66, was also present on the event, and she looked barely out of her 50s. We had to know his secret, and he said it’s all kudos to more than a decade’s use of the Ageversal Repairing System, which uses olive oil-derived squalane to keep skin smooth and elastic.
dr wu 2

We definitely want some of whatever he’s having, if we get to have skin that looks like that at 71.

The Adidas NMD R2 "Tokyo" Pays Homage To The Iconic Shibuya Crossing

Ask any sneakerhead what some of the best NMD colourways are, and the “Japan” is bound to come up at least a few times — though its design can feel rather archaic by today’s standards, the sneaker was downright revolutionary back in the day, rocking a never-before-seen black Boost sole, contrasting stripes on the collar and Japanese characters on the plugs for a “familiar, yet different” triple black look that’s still highly coveted to this day. It was really only a matter of time before Adidas brought the “Japan” aesthetic to the NMD R2, and if you were wondering how that would turn out, well…you don’t have to wonder any more.

NMD01

Now christened the “Tokyo”, the sneaker appear to be inspired by the city’s iconic Shibuya Crossing, and ditch the all black look in favour of a more traditional black / white combination. To add on to the road crossing motif the three stripes are made of a reflective material (which look very reflective in pictures, but pictures can be misleading), but the most eye-catching design choice is still the large striped pattern on the heel tab and tongue, which could easily pass off as an unofficial Adidas x Off-White collaboration. The only thing missing from these kicks are the signature Japanese characters, but even without them the shoes are definitely still worth copping.
NMD02 NMD03

The Adidas NMD R2 “Tokyo” will see a limited international release tomorrow, and will be exclusively available at adidas Originals flagship stores in Berlin, New York, Mexico City, Paris, London, Milan, Moscow, Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul (if you have a friend in any of these cities we suppose you could get them to cop a pair on your behalf). We really hope that “sneakers inspired by famous landmarks” is going to be a thing…and if so we can’t wait till Adidas comes up with an “Eiffel Tower” colourway or something.

Caffeine-Infused Beauty Products That Will Literally Wake Your Skin Up

While we have a dangerous dependency on caffeine to help us get through annoyingly early mornings, sluggish afternoons, and late night work sessions, it also has plenty of beauty benefits to offer, which is why this ingredient is a gem in the beauty industry.
Packed with beneficial antioxidants, caffeine reduces free-radical damage, thereby stopping redness and irritation in its tracks. It doesn’t just do that, though. Caffeine protects the skin against UV-infused carcinogens too, and by doing so, the chances of your skin aging prematurely will be significantly reduced. Oh, and it also works to constrict blood vessels, temporarily tightening the skin to bring down puffiness and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Sounds a little too good to be true, right? Well, if you’re looking for a saviour to calm your skin down and give it a necessary jolt of awakening, we’ve got five for you right here.

handmade heroes scrub
Handmade Heroes Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub

The smell of coffee is enough to jump start our entire system in the morning, but this coffee scrub takes it to another level. Gently massage this all over damp skin and let the ground coffee beans exfoliate to brighten and tone, fading dark spots as it reduces the appearance of cellulite and varicose veins. You won’t need a body lotion after this, the sweet almond oil and cocoa butter in it will pack on the moisture to leave your skin feeling super soft.
$21.90, available from handmade-heroes.com.

100 percent pure coffee bean eye cream
100% Pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream

Puffy eyes are no match for this caffeinated cream. Boosted with rosehip oil, green tea, and of course, coffee, this brightening cream helps to increase circulation and make you look like you’ve had enough sleep, even when you’ve only had 2 hours the night before. Feel free to smooth this all over your face and neck too – it brings down the redness and lightens acne scars thanks to the naturally-occurring vitamin A in the rosehip oil.
$46, available from 100percentpure.com.sg.

sw basics oil serum
S.W. Basics Oil Serum

S.W. Basics is known for their clean and minimal formulations, and this oil serum is no different given its 4 ingredients. This dropper bottle is filled with avocado, geranium, turmeric, and coffee oils, packing a ton of essential fatty acids, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and phytoesterols that are vital for plump, healthy skin. Pat a few drops of these onto your face, or mix a couple drops with your moisturiser for hydrated, balanced skin.

This Works Energy Bank Sun Flash

Don’t be alarmed by what comes out of this bottle, because it sure looks intense for a skincare product. Similar to a self-tanner, this works as a tinted moisturiser, lending the illusion that you’ve been out in the sun all day. Coupled with natural caramel to give your complexion a healthy glow, this thing is quite literally bottled sun flashes. There’s also vitamin C, D, and E in there to repair and nourish the skin.
$59, available from Sephora.

How to Get Your Guy to Wear Sunscreen

Truth be told, we’re not too fond of sunscreen. The market is still saturated with plenty of formulas that leave a tacky layer of white sitting on the surface of the skin, causing a substantial amount of discomfort throughout the day and potentially clogging up a few pores along the way. Also, what’s with that weird smell? See, if it’s causing us girls this much distress, then the boys just won’t have any of it.
It’s not the concept of sunblock that’s unfavourable (I mean, we’re well aware of how great it’d be to NOT have skin cancer), it’s just the application that guys seem to dislike. Even if it’s for safety reasons, rubbing something greasy on the skin makes them feel super uncomfortable. So instead of acquiescing to the protection of sunscreen, most guys just go without.
Well today, we’re gonna show you a few ways to get your guy to wear sunscreen on a regular basis – because no, that cap won’t save his skin from harmful rays, and wearing it backwards just defeats its purpose altogether. Ready to torture shield him with sunscreen? Then give these simple, civilised methods a try.

fake laughter 1
Our colleagues Joel (left) and Jared (right) smeared in sunscreen, having the time of their lives.

    1. Educate him
“DID YOU KNOW that skin cancer is the sixth most common cancer amongst men in Singapore?” Just blurt it out of nowhere. No context needed. In fact, it’s best said when you’re sharing a romantic moment so it’s lodged in the deep recesses of his mind. But seriously, melanoma is no joke. It kills twice as many men because they don’t reach for sunscreen as much as women do, thereby accumulating sunburns and tans, raising the risk of skin cancers so much more. And just because it’s cloudy outside, doesn’t mean they can skip the sun protection. Unlike UVB rays, UVA rays can reach your skin through clouds, smog, and glass. So if your boy is Casper-pale, consider shoving him on board that sunscreen train, stat.
    2. Apply it on for him
Since most guys aren’t sure how much sunscreen to use and often spread it around their faces slowly with one finger (hilarious and endearing, yes – but ain’t nobody got time for that), offer to apply some on for him. You can give him a quick facial massage while you’re at it too. Something he’ll probably appreciate.
    3. If he doesn’t allow it, ambush him
My other half is a stubborn creature who despises sunscreen, often refusing my facial massage services. Yeah, I don’t give up easily, though. When he’s got his guard down in the morning, I’d slap a layer of sunscreen on his cheeks (and forehead too, if I’m quick enough). It’s something you should consider doing because it’s pretty fun, but make sure you don’t slap him too hard till he gets red (my bad). A form of abuse? Perhaps. But at least you’ll be protecting his skin from ruthless sun rays.
    4. Find a lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen
Since the icky sticky feel is often the main issue for most guys, finding a lightweight formula that spreads easily on the skin without leaving an uncomfortable residue is a good way to re-introduce sunscreen. Well, I gathered three options lying around the office and got two of our male colleagues to test out the liquid, spray, and cream formulations over the course of three days. Keep scrolling for their first impressions.
    shiseido testing
    A – Liquid sunscreen
Pros: Formula’s smooth and easy to spread on the skin.
Cons: It’s got an overpowering smell, leaves a white cast, and is way too greasy for our humidity.
    biore spray
    B – Sunscreen spray
Pros: It’s easy to use, much less sticky, doesn’t leave a white cast, and it’s convenient for the face and body.
Cons: Has a high alcohol content, which dries out the skin.
    dr g sunscreen
    C – Sunscreen cream
Pros: It’s lightweight, a lot less greasy, and smells pleasant. Uses colour-adapting technology so there’s no white cast.
Cons: May still feel a little oily for some.
So if you’re starting him out with a sunscreen, skip the greasy liquids and consider a spray or lightweight cream version first before getting him to try out cleaner formulas (more on chemical and physical sunscreens in another article). You can also hunt for aftershaves with SPF, or look into these featherlight picks that were made for the heat. Feel free to try out a watery-gel formulation too – we’ve found our favourite Glossier sunscreen dupes here.
    5. Remind him of its benefits
Similar to the effects of repeated advertising, reminding him about the importance of sunscreen will keep his fear of skin cancer in check. You can also place a bottle or tube of sunscreen on top of his daily necessities as a visual reminder, so he’ll have to physically pick up the sunscreen and use it before he gets access to his wallet or underwear.
    6. Scare the crap outta him with haunting visuals
The Internet is filled with terrifying images of what sun damage can do to someone’s skin, so we won’t be showing you those visuals here, but… you know what we’re talking about. You can show those images to him on your phone, or take it to the next level and print all of them out, leaving a fresh image by the sink every morning. Yeah, we’re pretty sure the combination of all those tips should scare (or annoy) him into wearing sunscreen.

NYLON Team Picks: What We're Washing Our Faces With

No matter how bare-bones your skincare regime is, you should have at least something to wash your face with. You do… right? Like, something other than water (in the course of putting together this piece, we realised there is one NYLON staffer who does just that – he was swiftly admonished). Beyond performing the basic function of, well, keeping your face clean, finding a formula that’s right for your skin can also help improve the health and appearance of your complexion in the long term. Like how our Editor swears on the shu uemura cleansing oil, claiming it to be her fountain of youth.
While the rest of us here at NYLON are still waiting to find our fountain our youth in a cleanser, what we have found at least are products that not only keep our faces clean, but also contain enough skincare benefits to at least keep our skin looking and feeling good. Bonus points if they smell really nice, too.

    shu uemura

shu uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil Advanced Formula
$50 for 150ml; $115 for 450ml. Available at shu uemura stores and counters.

Twenty years ago when I bought my first bottle of shu uemura cleansing oil in Sydney, I never imagined I would become my country’s number one advocate for the product. I bought it because I liked how the bottle looked. Then I continued using it because I really liked how it smelt and how it made my skin feel. A decade on (and still using the product), I was in my late 20s and kept getting compliments on my skin. I never once thought I had “good skin” until more and more people kept coming up to me and asking me what skincare I was using. That continued well into my 30s (just recently at our April cover shoot, Stefanie Sun asked the same question) and now as I close in on 40 (so surreal), my skin has never been better. When I say better, I mean it looks and feels healthy, I don’t break out, and I like the texture (not rough or bumpy). The only skincare that has been consistent in my routine is shu uemura’s cleansing oil. In fact just yesterday I shot a campaign for the cleansing oil’s 50th anniversary. I was telling the crew that I worked with, that a brand can’t buy my endorsement. I value my editorial integrity and if I think a product is lousy, they couldn’t pay me to say that it was good. So I was really proud to execute and front the 50th anniversary for the oil because it’s really that one golden skincare product that I cannot live without, and would not hesitate to recommend to everyone.

    – Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief

    shu uemura porefinist

shu uemura POREfinish Anti-shine Fresh Cleansing Oil
$50 for 150ml; $115 for 450ml. Available at shu uemura stores and counters.

I’ve been using this cleansing oil for the past four years. It’s a cult product for a reason: it melts makeup right off your face, and doubles up as a cleanser as well, so you don’t need to double-cleanse. I use it with a Clarisonic to feel extra clean. In my college student days, I only used half a pump each time to save money. It still works, but the full pump is the luxury you get to enjoy with a full-time job, thanks NYLON Singapore!

    – Joanne Cheah, Designer

    fancl

    FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil
$30 for 120ml. Available at FANCL stores and counters.
There’s one word to describe my skincare routine: lazy. But hey, it means I’ve narrowed it down to the least amount of items I need for the maximum benefit – see, good things do come out of bad habits! Using Fancl’s famous cleansing oil daily means I can remove makeup and wash my face at the same time, and I love that this takes away the day’s residue easily without any crazy scrubbing, doesn’t sting my eyes (important!) and leaves my face soft after.
    – Amelia Tan, Associate Editor

Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash

Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash
$47 for 230ml. Available at Kiehl’s stores and counters.
I’m a bit addicted to trying out new things to wash my face with, so unlike our Editor-in-Chief, I’m unable to pledge allegiance to a single cleanser for longer than a couple of months, much less two decades and counting. Flights of fancies aside, I’m still quite picky about the cleansers I choose to try. This new one from Kiehl’s passed the test because I already know how good the Calendula toner is, so I figured the face wash version should do pretty well too. The gel formula feels soothing as I massage it onto my face, and as promised, my skin always feels soft and hydrated after each wash – I don’t feel an immediate need to go slap on my moisturiser; in fact, it’s so sufficiently hydrated that on a few occasions I found myself forgetting to apply moisturiser until quite some time after.
My only gripes are that it doesn’t really create a “rich foam” as the brand promises, and doesn’t smell as heavenly as the Calendula and Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque (this face wash barely has any smell, in fact). I don’t need the foam, but I might go through a few more bottles of this if it bore a better scent.

I’ve stuck to this one for a couple of years now and every time I sway to a trendy new face wash, my skin gets pissed off and I come crawling back to Paula’s Choice. A little goes a long way with this, and although its name says “foaming”, it actually produces a creamier lather. It’s a no-frills, fragrance-free cleanser that does a great job at purifying my sensitive, acne-prone, combination skin (a winning synergy, am I right?) to keep it balanced.

Himalaya Herbals Oil Control Lemon Face Wash
$6.95 for 100ml. Available at Guardian stores.
If you scour the internet for natural acne treatments, you’re bound to come across the words ‘lemon’ and ‘honey’ – and this face wash has both of those things. Specially formulated for oily skin like mine, this product was a skin saver back when I was a broke student, and it works so well that I still purchase it today. Though most people might be skeptical of its worth due to its affordable price and its drugstore availability, I find that it’s one of the very few cleansers that can do its job without overly drying my skin the way many products targeting oily skin do. A pea-sized amount is all you need, and the tiny blue granules in the transparent gel would work its way into your skin, the lemon having an astringent effect on open pores, leaving your face feeling fresh without leaving behind any residue. It also possesses the faintest citric scent, for those who do not enjoy fragrant cleansers.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash
$20.90 for 250ml. Available at The Body Shop stores.
I’ve been using The Body Shop’s Tea Tree facial wash since my massive acne breakout days in secondary school, so… that’s about seven years and counting. Tea tree-infused products are tricky; they can’t be too potent or else the formula is going to dry your skin out, bad. The Body Shop does their tea tree cleansers well — the gel-like liquid lathers up in an instant, and really strips your skin of dirt and grime, leaving it squeaky clean but still adequately moisturised. And the minty tea tree scent that follows is an added assurance that I’ve properly executed step one of my skincare routine. (Pro tip: The Body Shop tends to have sales on their star products occasionally, so grab them when they’re at 2 for $19.90!)
    – Chelsea Tang, Editorial Assistant
I’ve never been one to be too hung up about what I use in the bathroom — I mean, the fact that I use Donald Duck shampoo should be evidence enough of that, but I have to say that The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Facial Wash is one the best products that I’ve had the luck to accidentally stumble upon (i.e my mom left it in the bathroom one day and I’ve been using it ever since). I’m not well-versed in the nitty-gritty details of how these things work, but my face just feels…fresher after using it, and my skin has remained relatively clear since adopting it as my go-to facial wash. Besides, I have not one, but several friends — ones who are a lot more invested into skincare than I am — using this as well, so it has me believing that I’m somewhere along the right side of things.

Converse Teams Up with LASALLE Students to Redesign the Chuck Taylor All Star, Local-Style

If there is one shoe in the world that has withstood the test of time and the numerous fashion changes that have followed, it’s without a doubt Converse’s Chuck Taylor All Star.
A symbol of youth culture, these iconic kicks have adorned the feet of many a sneaker-head since its debut in 1917, and Converse is once again putting it back in the spotlight with its “Forever Chuck” campaign, which kicked off earlier this year.
The campaign explores all the cultural movements that make the Chuck Taylor special, using stars like Millie Bobby Brown (aka Eleven of Stranger Things) and Maisie Williams to build up hype. In Singapore however, Converse has joined forces with LASALLE College of the Arts students to completely revamp the classic shoe.

LASALLE Students incorporate the Chuck Taylor in the Graduate Fashion Show of 2017

In this exclusive collab, a total of seven fashion grads from the school drew inspiration from their very own fashion collections in order to make the Chuck Taylors more “local”, and intrinsically more “Singaporean”.

For instance, one of the winners of the campaign, Yong De Han, implemented a deconstructed approach in his redesign of the Chucks, making the sneakers into sandals, and using a medley of exotic components such as Hawaiian flora and Thai gold/black lacquer works in his final design.

Another starlet to look out for is Jamela Law, who used elements like honeycombs and bees to create mesh-like structures reminiscent of honey dripping down from combs.

“To me, Converse is a very open-minded and artistic brand. I know that it collaborates with a lot of artists all over the world. Chucks were my usual wear when I was schooling in junior college. Now I’d wear them when I ‘m out on a casual day around town,” said Jamela, when asked on how she relates with Converse.
In any case, the idea was to go back right to the beginning – the very first classic white Chuck Taylor – and to really showcase how versatile the shoes are even after 100 years of being around, by re-designing them and giving them a new lease of life.
Well, we think the designs worked, and it’s just further proof of how Chuck Taylor’s will never go out of style.

Tired of your usual weekend plans? Yeah, we get it. The same ol’ bars and cafés just don’t cut it anymore. Anyhow, your luck is about to change thanks to the National Gallery, which will hold a humongous family-friendly exhibition for the next four months.
Titled the Gallery Children’s Biennale, this inaugural exhibition will feature a host of art installations and commissioned works by local and international artists, chief among whom is legendary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who’s famous for her iconic dots, nets, and pumpkin motifs.
She’ll be contributing to the biennale with her exhibition called the “Obliteration Room”, an interactive display where visitors are invited to “obliterate” a white room by sticking coloured dots all over.

3CE Now Has Their Own Temporary Treatment Hair Tint

Temporary hair dyes seem to be wildly popular among our readers, and trust us when we say that we fully understand why. We do love dyes that are semi-permanent too, for the simple reason that these “tints” allows us to change our hair colours every couple of weeks. Plus, they’re less expensive than a full hair makeover at a professional salon, and are less harmful to your scalp and mane too.
And we’re always more than happy to introduce different brands of temporary hair dyes, because we believe that having options and choice is a luxury. The new player to the game is none other than 3CE, though a tad bit late, but still deserving of our attention nonetheless.

The colour selection seems pretty basic now after being exposed to other semi-permanent hair dyes from brands like Missha and Aprilskin. There’s the usual rose gold and chestnut brown, but what we are zooming in straight on is this particular colour called “Apricot Brown”. A muted tangerine shade with hints of brown, to tone the otherwise vibrant (and perhaps outlandish) colour down.

Colours tend to last only for a week, though once again it all depends on your hair’s health, alongside external factors such as the types of hair care products used. Plus, 3CE has been really upfront about their products’ effectiveness — colours typically do not show up well on dark hair, so it’s best to have the dye applied onto bleached / lightened hair. But before you shrug off the product, we have to say that these dyes are actually perfect for those who desire to rock a different hair colour, but have jobs in conservative workplaces that frown upon brightly-coloured hair. Just like lip tints, they are going to stain your hair, and for those who are starting off with a canvas of dark mane, the colour is likely to only show up under natural sunlight.
Check out this short Instagram tutorial on the 3CE Treatment Hair Tint:

Adidas Gives The Stan Smith A Timely "Summer" Update

The Stan Smith is nothing short of a footwear icon, and a lot of that can be attributed to its versatility — thanks to a clean, minimalist aesthetic, the sneaker is one of the safest looks to rock on the street, and can even double up as a pair of semi-formal shoes should the need arise. One small problem that comes with that kind of versatility, however, is that the silhouette doesn’t exactly come across as a “fun” shoe, but it looks like Adidas is looking to change that with their latest “Summer” colourway. At this rate, we’re going to have a pair of Stan Smiths for every occasion…not that we’re complaining, of course.
    Stan01
Right off the bat, these Stans immediately set themselves apart from the original by switching the material up from leather to a more casual canvas, and while they still rock the classic white that the sneaker is so well known for, there’s an assortment of Summer-related graphics embroidered all over the upper that adds some much-needed personality. From seashells to starfish to popsicles, there’s a clear beach motif going on here, and the whole “fun in the sun” vibe is further cemented by a rugged looking off-white sole. We don’t need these, but we want them? Definitely.

    Stan03 Stan04

Considering that we’re already well into Summer (when is it not Summer in Singapore though), it makes sense that the Stan Smith “Summer” is available right now, and can be bought online from retailers such as Foot District for 100 Euros. These sneakers definitely aren’t as versatile as its predecessor, but if you’re looking for a classic look with some Vans-esque attitude thrown into the mix, then these just might be the kicks for you.

Check Out These Contact Lenses With A Mesmerising Rainbow Effect

*Disclaimer: We are by no means certified optometrists, so do consult one on your eyes’ suitability before purchasing contact lenses online.
When it comes down to coloured contact lenses, most of the ones we see (and use) tend to be of a single colour — you name it, brands’ got it — and with lots of emphasis placed on making the colours look as natural as possible when they’re on your eyes. For those who prefer something a little more adventurous though, there are those lenses with patterned inner rims, such as the floral ones, which are wildly popular among people in-the-know. Just take a look at Anna Sui’s Rose Series contact lenses, which comes with a rose perimeter that circles around your iris:

    ASE_AS_ContactLenses3-520x313
Anna Sui’s Rose Series contact lenses; see the single colour and patterned rim.

The coloured contacts by Korean brand DANNA, however, do the exact opposite. There are no complicated patterns in the lenses, so don’t expect your iris to look like a flower garden; but in place of that: a kaleidoscope of colours all merged into the tiny piece of silicon, so that it looks like you have rainbows in your eyes.
    collage
    collage2

The colours are all pastel and muted, so no worries about them looking too jarring when on your irises. In fact, a colleague who saw the lenses in action IRL mentioned that the rainbow looks incredibly subtle when not under sunlight, so you’ll actually look like you’re just wearing conventional coloured contacts. But once you step into natural light, the multi-colour function will be “activated”, and colours are likely to show up better.
You get to pick from four base colours — blue, brown, chocolate and pink — so the trick here is to first select the colour that you’d feel most comfortable sporting, and the rainbow design will naturally come along, complementary to the base hue selected. From images, it seems like the brown and the pink ones look best, with the rainbows still looking natural when worn on the eyes.
    collage3

The lenses are made of silicon, with a diameter of 14.2mm. Pair them with a natural brown eyeshadow look, or go all out with the rainbow, prismatic themed makeup.
