The Padded, Puffy And Pillow-Like Bags That We’re Obsessed With This Fall/Winter 2022

Padded, puffy, plush, and as pillow-like as possible. This Fall/Winter season, we’re absolutely smitten by soft silhouettes and bags that go squish. Mind you, these aren’t just your regular quilted designs; think comfy arm candy that can double up as a headrest in the middle of an exhausting work day. Loewe’s Puffer Goya certainly caught our attention with its elevated bouncy-castle aesthetic, while Mulberry and Coach give us cosy pillows that also double up as cute bags. Then, there’s the very-sold-out COS bag worn by Jennie, and softly-structured styles from Prada and Saint Laurent that nail edgy-minimalism with a touch of extra. Definitely, don’t sleep on this trend — though the bags don’t mind if you do.

1. LOEWE PUFFER GOYA

Fans of puffy down jackets can attest, there’s something comforting and cosy about this one, almost as if you can feel its soft texture from across the screen. That, or the feel of confidently diving into a bouncy house castle. Either way, the Loewe Puffer Goya calls out to your senses. Knowing Loewe though, there are just enough elevated details to make this a worthy trophy bag.

The Puffer Goya is an extension of the (very different) Goya bag, and eschews the former’s structure in favour of a rounded, bloated aesthetic — in line with the balloon theme the house is exploring for Fall/Winter. Then again, the bag features shiny nappa lambskin over goose feathers padding, which gathers elegantly about a gold-toned Anagram fastening that’s then matched with a detachable metal donut chain. The result is a clean aesthetic, while the colours of dark chocolate, camel, plumrose and dark khaki green also keep the line chic and covetable.

USD3,600, available at LOEWE stores.

2. MULBERRY SOFTIE

The Softie bag feels like a warm hug, and surely beckons for one thanks to a thick, feathery down that re-inflates even after multiple squeezes. After all, Mulberry states that “the Softie collection was created to be touched”, so, you know, don’t mind if we do. We most associate Mulberry bags, especially the famous Alexa, with casual-chic style topped off with a touch of English countryside, and the Softie echoes these in subtle ways.

Just take a look at its pillowy quilted design, done deliberately as a reference to the beloved braid pattern on the Alexa bag handle; the postman’s lock closure and paper clip chain recall the brand’s heritage and signature design codes as well. Conscious shoppers would be pleased to note that the nappa leather used across the range has been sourced from environmentally-accredited tanneries, while even the down feathers are responsibly-sourced too.

USD1,770 for the Little Softie, and USD2,345 for the Softie. Available at Mulberry stores and online

3. PRADA PADDED RE-NYLON

Prada’s design codes are so strong that even a bag as puffy as this padded shoulder bag can embody the house’s sleek, unfussy minimalism. This one’s for those who are curious about the “pillow for a bag” trend, without having to sacrifice their typical cool-girl, almost apocalyptic-chic style. As a more responsible take on their long-beloved Nylon range, the fashion house has also opted for Re-Nylon fabric, a technologically innovative material made of recycled plastic collected in the ocean.

Here, the choice of a flap bag keeps things minimal, while not-overdone padding gives this accessory a soft yet contemporary look, especially when paired with matching leather shoulder straps, and that iconic metal triangle logo. Those straps are adjustable as well, so you can have the bag tucked under your arm, or worn longer and crossbody, almost like a grown-up satchel.

$3,350, available at Prada stores and online.

4. SAINT LAURENT LE 57 HOBO

While Saint Laurent is better known for their angular structured styles — see the recently-viral Manhattan style — we’ve still got space in our hearts for their quilted designs. The Le 57 Hobo Bag though pushes ‘quilted’ to the extreme. Far more voluminous than, say, the Loulou and its metal chain strap, this latest bag features carré-quilted overstitching on lambskin instead, which gives a more exaggerated effect thanks to its slightly rounder and softer silhouette.

Its strap also seamlessly connects to the bag, whether in black, white or hot pink, making this a more versatile design that can take you from fancy errands to a rooftop bar party. As always, the iconic YSL logo is placed right in the centre, in bronze-toned metal hardware that stands out from its surroundings.

$2,850, available at Saint Laurent stores and online

5. COS QUILTED OVERSIZED SHOULDER BAG

Run, don’t walk — especially if you spot this bag on the shelf. An overnight sensation since Jennie of BLACKPINK casually wore the off-white shoulder bag in a mirror selfie, fans and non-fans alike are swept up by how oversized, and thus functional, the COS Quilted Oversized Shoulder Bag is. It may look overwhelming on small frames, but that isn’t about to stop us from coveting for COS’ interpretation of a cloud.

Composed of a single shoulder strap and zip closure, what makes this design appealing is its soft construction crafted from recycled polyester yarn, and probably that roomy, soft-girl look when paired with casual sweats. And of course, the fact that you don’t have to fork out big bucks to own a piece of It-girl Jennie’s wardrobe!

$130, available at COS stores.

6. COACH PILLOW TABBY

The Coach Tabby is itself an icon, most notable for that “C” hardware in the centre of the bag that snugly secures its front flap. And while there are more structured or slouchy interpretations of the archival 1970s design, you can say that we’ve got a soft spot for the Coach Pillow Tabby.

Plush and lush, and all kinds of cute, the shoulder bag is made from ultra-soft nappa leather that holds its shape while still allowing for movement and that padded feel — even its accompanying hangtag is done in a similar style. As functional as always, Coach has ensured that the Tabby includes two detachable straps so you may carry it by hand, style as a shoulder bag, or wear crossbody. There are plenty of fun shades and finishes to choose from too, whether it’s a Barbiecore candy pink, festive silver, or wintery shearling.

$950 for the Pillow Tabby 18, and $1,350 for the Pillow Tabby 26. Available at Coach stores and online

Le Grand Numéro de CHANEL: An Exclusive Fragrance Exhibition To Be Held In Paris

The CHANEL N°5. Coco Mademoiselle. Bleu de Chanel. Gabrielle. Chance. These timeless scents are revered the world over, and will come together at an immersive fragrance exhibition held at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris. If you happen to be heading to the City of Lights this December, this is an event that you don’t want to miss.

Called ‘Le Grand Numéro de CHANEL‘, the exhibition opens to the public only from 15 December 2022 to 9 January 2023, inviting guests to embark on a journey of discovery through a world dedicated to CHANEL’s finest scents, or what CHANEL is calling a ‘festive and olfactory whirlwind’. The history, making and emotional experiences of these perfumes will be expressed through rich,  and and imaginative displays.

“LE GRAND NUMÉRO DE CHANEL is a show, a return to reverie that is emotionally evocative on several levels. The idea is to let yourself indulge in daydreaming, to chart your own path as you travel from one universe to another,” says Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, the Head of Global Creative Resources Fragrance & Beauty, Fine Jewellery & Watches at CHANEL. “It is also a social experience, a time to share in the holiday spirit, and feels a bit like discovering the window displays of the Parisian department stores at Christmas time.”

He also shares that the exhibition name recalls both the symbolic meaning of the house’s emblematic numbers, as well as the idea of artistic performances, which has ties to founder Gabrielle Chanel’s times living in Moulins and performing as a singer. “A CHANEL fragrance is a virtuosic performance by the perfumer. It is also a spectacular celebration of life, movement, of allure: a daily invitation to put on a show,” he continues.

On display, expect the CHANEL N°5, the house’s most iconic scent, as well as the Gabrielle, Chance, Les Exclusifs collection, and men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel interpreted in evocative ways that show us how “a fragrance is more than a name, a bottle, or a scent”, as Thomas puts it. Consider this an invitation to “follow your lucky star, seize your chance, or become part of the legend”.

  • Date: December 15, 2022 to January 9, 2023
  • Location: Grand Palais Éphémère, Place Joffre, 75007 PARIS
  • Registration now open, on chanel.com/fr.

NETS Introduces A Prepaid Card For E-Payments, Daily Expenses, And Travelling On Public Transport

Gone are the days of carrying cash in our flashy wallets — e-payments are definitely here to stay, and we’re more than happy to be tapping our way through MRT gantries, paying for our meals and otherwise, though owning a credit card is more of a luxury than you’d think. Enter: the NETS Prepaid Card.

Introduced by the Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS), Singapore’s leading payment services group, the NETS Prepaid Card is the first ‘smart’ stored-value card of its kind, and ideal for retail and transit. Other than the ease of use, its key selling point is also the sheer number of vendors already on board; the card is accepted at over 120,000 acceptance points all over Singapore, making it the stored value card with the largest number of acceptance points, such that contactless payment is a breeze.

As with all stored-value cards, you’re free to top up on-the-go, while it holds as much value as you want, making it easy to track spending limits, and monitor transactions. — this is especially useful should you be using it as your main ‘public transport’ card, since it eliminates the time spent on queuing at physical top-up machines. You won’t have to fret too much if it’s misplaced as well, since it’s easy to ‘lock’ the card and request for a new card, along with all these other transactions, via the NETS app.

The linking to the smart app opens up other advantages too. Users can set up automatic top-ups for the card to ensure a steady flow of funds for your daily expenses, or if you’re using it for your daily commute. Currently, up to 10 cards can be linked to one NETS account via the NETS app, which makes it easy to track expenses for the entire family too.

There is no minimum age or income requirement, no annual subscription fees and no credit checks for the purchase of the NETS Prepaid Card. Daily spending limits of up to $1000 can be set for each card, which makes it useful for family members (or even domestic helpers) to get them in on the digital payment era.

That it’s a prepaid card also means that it can be customised as a gift card, where your loved ones are free to spend at any NETS-accepting merchants, rather than being confined to, say, a particular store or group of malls.

Here are all the key features of the NETS Prepaid Card:

  • Everyone can own a NETS Prepaid Card, as no credit approval or bank account is needed.
  • The NETS Prepaid Card is accepted at over 120,000 retail points in Singapore, and can be used for public transport as well.
  • Using the NETS App, users can top up on-the-go, enable auto top-up, track and manage daily and/or household expenses, and set daily spending limits; you may also link up to 10 cards to a single NETS account.
  • The stored-value card concept means it’s easy to safeguard funds from fraud and misuse.
  • It can also be customised as a gift card, providing recipients with the freedom to shop anywhere.

The NETS Prepaid Card, available at 7-Eleven convenience stores, Buzz, Japan Home, Mustafa, Sir Handphone, TransitLink Ticket Offices at MRT stations and bus interchanges, NETS Customer Service Centre as well as Lazada and Shopee.

The PUMA x Pokémon Collection Honours Pikachu And The Kanto Starters Across Sneakers And Apparel

The Pokémon fever is at an all-time high right now, with the newly-launched Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet RPG games out on the Nintendo Switch, a Pokémon-themed aircraft carrier and tech accessories collection, as well as with mascots and drone light shows taking place over the weekend across M Malls and at Marina Bay respectively. No doubt, the Japanese series’ popularity isn’t about to die down any time soon — especially in this next evolution of collaborations meant to celebrate the Pokémon’s prestigious 25th anniversary.

PUMA has teamed up with The Pokémon Company International to unveil a full-fledged puma.com collection of sneakers and apparel inspired by the famous Kanto region starters — Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle — and the fan-favourite / Ash’s companion, Pikachu.

Announced earlier about a month ago across international media, we got word that it’s now out in Singapore, at PUMA stores and exclusive retailers.

First up, those sneakers. Classic PUMA shoe silhouettes take on the distinct colours of our beloved pocket monsters, with nylon and suede uppers adding much texture to the shoes. Their various element types are featured on heel tabs as well, while you can identify them via face graphics that appear across tongue tabs, charms, and co-branded insoles.

Bulbasaur and Pikachu feature on the PUMA Rider FV, a chunky style that prominently highlights the sporting brand’s iconic Formstrip; Charmander on is a blast on the PUMA Slipstream basketball shoes; while Squirtle tackles the low-cut PUMA Suedes, complete with blue translucent soles. The footwear range comes in all sizes, and is available to infants, children, and adults.

A series of apparel also accompany the sneakers, with items such as sweatpants, cotton t-shirts, hoodies and a track jacket, as well as accessories such as a backpack and messenger bag making the cut.

Take a look at those iconic sneakers here:

PUMA Rider FV — Pikachu (Adult), $199
PUMA Rider FV — Bulbasaur (Adult), $199
PUMA Slipstream — Charmander (Adult), $179
PUMA Suede Classic — Squirtle (Adult), $159

The PUMA x Pokémon collection, $35 – $199. Available in Singapore on puma.com, and at PUMA stores (Bugis+, Flagship Store at 313@somerset, ION Orchard, Jewel, VivoCity), and retailers including FootLocker, Limited Edt – The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, Limited Edt Women’s Vault, TANGS at Tangs Plaza.

Tocco Toscano x Hello Kitty Bags And Other Accessories By The Local Luxury Leather Brand

New day, new Hello Kitty launch — but don’t worry we’re not tired of the famous cat yet. From skincare and makeup to gaming gear, Hello Kitty is a perennial favourites in the hearts of Singaporeans, young and old, which is why local luxury leather brand Tocco Toscano has teamed up with Sanrio for their interpretation of the cute cartoon character.

Satchel, $329 ; Charm, $39 ; Passport Wallet, $129

The brand’s series of bags, pouches, and wallets are designed for everyday wear, with motifs such as Hello Kitty’s iconic bow done in a subtle embossed style that doesn’t take away from the sleek silhouette of each bag. To up the functional aspect, satchels and tote bags arrive with inner pockets for neat and easy access of your items, while their recently-beloved style, the Mobile Phone Bag, holds your smartphone as well as five other cards and cash. All the styles are available in an array of five colours: Cream, Scarlet, Black, Forest and Blush.

Top Handle, $349 ; Slim Card Wallet, $99 ; Bifold Wallet, $129
Micro, $199 ; Expressions Coaster Set, $69

This limited-edition series is curated in collaboration with Sanrio, while we appreciate how it’s created for both closet and avid Hello Kitty fans. A Top Handle bag, for instance, features a statement-making top handle on a vintage-style silhouette, with only a textured monogram of Hello Kitty’s bow giving a clue to its inspiration — one may pick her signature red or girly blush to show off your love for the character, or stick to black and a cool-girl forest green for subtlety. You may also swap out the thin strap with the thicker Genki Bag Strap for a touch more streetwear edge.

Then, there’s the Satchel and the Micro with their more boxy, structured silhouettes, with a unique top opening secured by a twist clasp closure. These Tocco Toscano designs are accompanied by a wide selection of accessories for more matchy-matchy goodness, whether we’re talking about a passport case, bifold wallet, card case, bag charm, or coaster set.

Other details of note include the phrase “Ogenki Desu Ka” (how are you) in Japanese text across bag handles; Hello Kitty-embossed hardware on the zips and sides of the designs; and bold interior linings featuring Hello Kitty’s face in a pleasant, repeated pattern.

This launch also marks the brand’s official comeback after a four-year-long brand revamp, started since their move to online platforms and e-commerce in 2018. The brand had started out as a small leather workshop in Florence, Italy in 1987, where founder James Lor then grew it into a household leather label commonly featured across local department stores. Currently, it’s now helmed by second-generation entrepreneur Joseph Lor, with a focus on functional design and quality leather craftsmanship to meet the everyday needs of modern women.

The Tocco Toscano X Hello Kitty collection, available online at toccotoscano.com. The full range will also be available at the new Hello Kitty and Little Twin Stars Café at The Stamford Brasserie, from 19 November 2022 to 29 January 2023.

This Looney Tunes x MCM Collection Is All About Tweety Bird

Here’s something worthy to tweet about. Always the scene-stealer both in and out of the animated series, Tweety is once again the star of the Looney Tunes x MCM collection, as the German luxury fashion house celebrates the fan-favourite character’s 80th anniversary.

The vibrant collection plays up the adorable yet cheeky personality of the yellow canary from the Warner Bros. cartoons, with images of Tweety across ready-to-wear apparel, as well as the brand’s signature Visetos monogram accessories and bags, for a total of 30 original pieces.

Fans of the iconic character will be pleased to find that there are plenty of leather goods to choose from, whether these may be mini-sized vanity cases and crossbody pouches, or shopper totes, drawstring bags and even a backpack; these capture Tweety’s confident stance, while also expressing MCM’s Visetos monogram canvas and their leather craftsmanship. A line of small leather goods also accompanies the bags, from zip pouches to card cases and wallets.

On the apparel front, two prominent yellow sweaters stand out, especially since they’re made from a jacquard knit mohair material that recalls our feathered friend. The women’s style sees Tweety in a charming pose, while the men’s style features a “Frankenstein” Tweety print. Elsewhere, there are black hoodies and sweatshirts, a classic cap and bucket hat, and even a whimsical scarf for you to accessorise with.

The Looney Tunes x MCM collection will be accompanied by special pop-ups and in-store displays, decked out in vibrant images of Tweety and his iconic bird cage.

Have A Look At LOEWE’s Balloon-Inspired Accessories — Including Those Balloon Heels And Inflated Cateye Sunglasses

If you’re all about understated luxury, then the LOEWE Balloon bag should be on your radar; its classic bucket shape is beautifully-constructed to show off the Spanish house’s expertise in leatherwork, and we see why it fits into everyone’s wardrobe. It’s that versatile and timeless, even traditional — which is exactly what we’re not getting from Jonathan Anderson’s Fall/Winter 2022 series.

The Creative Director imbues whimsy, even chaos, into an unexpected collection that celebrates balloons as one of its key elements. This time, we’re talking about the inflated helium-filled ones universally-loved by all kids, translated into ready-to-wear apparel and accessories that take on their rounded form and lustrous shine.

This is what we’re talking about. The inspiration is both literal and imaginative, with standard items such as sandals and pumps given an almost surreal vibe, thanks to 3D balloon-like forms, made of resin, wrapped around a shoe strap, or constructed into a heel.

[click on the images below to expand.]

Other conversation-starter pieces include jewellery, balloon print wear, and a round Balloon Pouch in classic calfskin, which can be worn like a necklace or casually strapped around one’s wrist.

Then, there are particularly juicy-looking sunglasses in similarly fun colours, where the classic cateye structure is blown out of proportion, while still being a play on the plastic / acetate eyewear trend as well. Either way, the key here is to have fun, and perhaps be less serious, when it comes to dressing up and expressing yourself — definitely a LOEWE vibe we’re pumped about.

Balloon pouch in classic calfskin — Yellow, Red, Pink.

RIMOWA x adidas: A Utilitarian Collection Feat. An Aluminium Backpack And NMD Sneakers

Two powerhouse German brands have come together to give us a unique capsule collection that perfectly embodies each of their brand’s modern ethos. Centred around the spirit of mobility and exploration, we’re getting RIMOWA’s first-ever aluminium backpack, complete with the sleek grooves that assure us we’re getting the top-of-the-line finish from the luggage brand, as well as a pair of NMD_S1 sneakers from sportswear giant adidas.

Both these limited edition creations are brazen in their sense of utilitarian design, with a colour palette of khaki and a lustrous shade of titanium, along with orange accents, to echo that outdoors inspiration.

The two items will be available in limited quantities from 17 November 2022, at RIMOWA stores in Singapore. Here’s a closer look at each of them:

The RIMOWA x ADIDAS NMD_BACKPACK

This aluminium backpack is designed for urban travellers, or urban explorers who wish to meaningfully connect with earth’s natural landscapes — so you bet it can withstand some pretty harsh elements too, making it suitable for the outdoors and overnight trips. The RIMOWA x ADIDAS NMD_BACKPACK is sports the luggage brand’s signature grooved aluminium, as well as padded utility shoulder straps fitted with a carabiner and thumb loops alongside weight-bearing straps and grab handles to make it ultra-functional if you’re spending time hiking on trails. There’s also bungee / climbing rope inspiration across the bag’s handle and straps.

For that bit of adidas, the aluminium shell design features foam ridges inspired by the adidas Boost foam along its back portion, which overlays the backpack’s grooved surface for extra comfort, while an elasticated webbing along the middle of the backpack allows it to be easily secured on top of a suitcase. This is a flat pack design, where a detachable gusset opens to reveal two deep zipped pockets and a 16-inch laptop pocket.

THE RIMOWA x ADIDAS NMD_S1 SNEAKER

Here, adidas takes one of its most iconic designs, the NMD, and gives it a futuristic outdoors colourway of titanium, khaki, and hints of orange. The RIMOWA x NMD_S1 shoe features the familiar and signature Primeknit uppers, with the flexible adidas Boost midsole in a near-transparent base colour; this is in contrast to bright orange shoelaces. You’ll also find co-branded details and a nod to their German origins on the shoe’s midsole — the coordinates of the brands’ respective headquarters in Germany, for instance, and a ‘Made in Germany’ imprint to remind the wearer of this special partnership.

The RIMOWA x ADIDAS NMD_S1 in Titanium, $380, and RIMOWA x ADIDAS NMD_BACKPACK in Titanium, $2,670, will be available in limited quantities via RIMOWA stores in Singapore.

PRISM+ Updates Line-Up with Google TV and Their First-Ever 4K QLED Displays

As if there aren’t already enough reasons for us to love PRISM+, the homegrown brand, best known for its affordable TVs, has decided to up the ante with a refresh of its entire TV line-up, and replaced its 4K Android TV Series with Google TVs.

It also introduces QLED display technology for the first time, alongside other new features such as HDR10+ and Filmmaker Mode to redefine your viewing experience, while retaining popular features that you know and love. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect in this refreshed line-up of new PRISM+ TVs.

4K QLED DISPLAY AND FILMMAKER MODE

The PRISM+ Q-Series Ultra leads the Google TV line-up refresh as the brand’s first-ever 4K QLED TV display with three affordable models: the Q75 Ultra, Q65 Ultra, and Q55 Ultra. Utilising the power of quantum dots and microscopic molecules that enhance light and colour, the PRISM+ Q-Series Ultra promises improved colour vibrancy, brightness, and contrast and also includes improved technologies to bring you new ways to enjoy your home cinema.

Aside from the well-loved Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos features, the new series will also include HDR10+, the latest standard in HDR which allows devices to set the colour and brightness levels frame-by-frame for higher brightness levels and better contrast, as well as Filmmaker Mode which lets the device detect and support the content’s original format as it was intended by the content creators and directors.

GOOGLE TV

PRISM+’s introduction of the Google TV will bring you a new interface that lets you personalise your television for better content discovery, parental control, access to apps, and increased connectivity to your network of smart home devices.

One key feature you can look out for is Google Profiles. Each individual Google Profile is tailored to your viewing behaviour and interest and recommends content across all major streaming platforms and live TV based on your preferences. Paired with the accompanying Google TV app, you will be able to customise your viewing experience by adding content and managing your watchlist on-the-go, using the app as a virtual remote to take your content wherever you go.

The built-in Google Assistant creates a seamless experience where you can find movies, stream apps, and play music, as well as control your TV and connected smart home devices with just your voice. Plus, the built-in Chromecast gives you easy access to cast from your devices directly to the TV, allowing your smart devices to communicate without hassle.

This new interface also gives parents a more creative way to enable parental control over their child’s viewing activities with the Kids Profile feature. This allows parents to restrict streaming services or content deemed inappropriate while granting the ability to monitor activities and set time limits for viewing.

Review: Getting your first grip on virtual reality with the PICO 4 VR Headset

Virtual Reality headsets took off in a big way in 2019 when Oculus and PlayStation dominated this very niche category. Prior to that, I had the privilege of reviewing Lenovo’s Jedi Challenges, which requires the user to slot in their smartphone to use as the screen. It was terrible for the eyes and came with a warning to stop playing and rest every 15 minutes. It was fun though; it had an actual stick that you pretended was a lightsaber and you could cross swords with Vader. I moved on to the PlayStation 4 VR headset and got hooked on Beat Saber, then discovered Oculus and my obsession skyrocketed (I’m now at Expert mode!).

This past week, the PICO 4 was launched — the latest VR headset to hit the market, and by the brand that’s owned by ByteDance (the owner of TikTok). Is it worth the $499 price tag? Should you get this brand of VR headset for Christmas? How’s the experience? Read on.

Above: Unboxing the pico 4 headset.

DESIGN AND FIT

The PICO 4 has a standard sleek design that one would expect from VR goggles in this day and age; it comes in a matte all-grey finish with matching controllers. I think it looks good, but more importantly, when I pick it up, it feels light (-ish) and very balanced. The weight is distributed among the front and back of the headset, so it doesn’t feel weighty when worn. This smart design means you can wear it for a longer period of time without fatigue kicking in. Also, it really helps that it has a smaller form factor compared to the ones from PlayStation and Oculus.

Above: The weight is nicely distributed among the front and back of the headset.

I really like that the side arms can be lifted to easily place the device on the head, and the mechanism is smooth as well making it easy to operate. Putting it on and adjusting the fit is easy, and the PICO 4 feels comfortable and snug on the head.

Above: Adjusting the fit is a simple turn of the wheel. It’s similar to the one on the playstation vr headset, but this one works so much better — it’s fast to adjust and the mechanism feels smooth.

Something to take note of, is that the PICO 4 doesn’t have an audio port, so you can’t plug in headphones and will have to rely on the in-built speakers. Good thing the speakers are decent.

THE OPERATING SYSTEM

When setting up the PICO 4, you’ll be prompted to adjust the distance between the pancake optical lens for a clear picture. But instead of manually pushing it together or apart like you have to with some other models, the adjustments made here are fully digital. You make the selection while wearing the device, and this makes a huge difference because you can actually see the changes being made, and select the clearest picture for your degree.

Finding your way around the PICO menu is also straightforward and very similar to the one on the Quest store. No issues here. Hey, you even start in your own virtual house.

THE GAME PLAY

With all the VR headsets I’ve tried, there’s always that small gap below the nose that leaks in light. The PICO 4 did a really good job addressing this problem and there’s minimal space that lets in light, providing a truly immersive experience. Note that I don’t wear spectacles, so this could be a very different experience for someone who does.

The controllers offer excellent tracking; they are very responsive and have no noticeable lag, which makes the experience of using this product nice and smooth.

Above: the pico 4 controllers feel natural and intuitive in the hand, and are really light (definitely lighter than the oculus controllers).

But with every device, content is key, and the PICO store loses out just based on not having Beat Saber. That was the first game I searched for, and then realised that Beat Saber is now owned by Meta, who owns Oculus — hence it’s not available on their competitor, in this case, the PICO store (not available at the time of writing). It was a bit of a disappointment for me, but I did appreciate that PICO provides a “Starter Gift Pack” when you activate your account on the PICO 4. The pack includes four free games:

Above: games in the starter gift pack.

I’m pretty excited to try Down the Rabbit Hole, which I saw heavily promoted on the Oculus Quest store but I never got around to paying for it. In the PICO store, I did find several music and dance games that could possibly satisfy my need for Beat Saber (there’s Ubisoft’s Just Dance VR that’s exclusive to PICO), but like all things in life, they’re not free. I’m going to spend some time watching the trailers and reading reviews before purchasing any games. I did also notice that the PICO store has tons of games in the horror genre — all of which I skipped past quickly. Not my cup of tea, but if you’re into that, the PICO 4 will be your new best friend.

Above: The Pico 4 headset.

TO BUY FOR CHRISTMAS?

If you’ve never owned a VR headset before, the PICO 4 is an excellent option to start with. For one, its price tag is reasonable compared to PICO’s predecessor (PICO neo3), anything from Oculus, and the one from PlayStation.  Also, it performs very smoothly and will give you an incredible VR experience — especially if you have nothing to compare it to. But if you’re holding out for Beat Saber, you’ll have to wait some more because there’s no news of this game coming to the PICO store. I’ll instead, just leave you here with this:

The PICO 4 is priced from $499 and available on PICO’s official store on Lazada.

The Timberland x PANGAIA Capsule Collection Gives Us Sustainable Footwear In Bright, Bold Shades

Name a better brand that perfectly encapsulates low-key celebrity street style. We’ll wait. The world’s been obsessed with sustainable loungewear line PANGAIA since they first arrived on the scene with brightly-coloured sweatshirts and sweatpants, so we’re excited to announce this new collaboration. Just-as-earth-conscious brand, Timberland, has joined forces with PANGAIA for a limited-edition series of footwear, which just launched in Singapore on 10 November 2022.

Both the brands have a shared mission of inspiring and equipping future generations to be more conscious about the environment, while working on innovation when it comes to their own apparel. The Timberland® x PANGAIA footwear capsule is, similarly, designed with nature in mind, and combines partly natural materials with bold colours and iconic style.

Naturally, you’re looking at the iconic Timberland boot. In signature PANGAIA colours of Galaxy Pink and Palm Green, as well as Timberland’s signature Wheat, the Timberland® x PANGAIA Premium Fabric 6-Inch Boot is an updated version of the original that features a cleaner, tone-on-tone aesthetic; subtle flaps cover the eyelets and matching outsoles for a neat look. To further the green mission, it’s also made in part with renewable materials such as responsibly-grown rubber, abaca plant fiber and organically grown cotton, while the boot also sees a custom textblock explaining its material composition, a design detail we associate with PANGAIA.

Then, there’s the Timberland® x PANGAIA Fabric Slip-On Mule, in the colour Stone, which is designed for circularity and closed-loop manufacturing, in line with Timberland’s Timberloop design process. Both the outsole and the inner bootie/webbing system are engineered to be easily disassembled at the end of the shoe’s life. If customers send back the product once it’s no longer in use, these parts can be put into the brand’s proper recycling stream, to be given a new lease of life.

MUJI’s New Apparel Collection Is Designed For Hot And Humid Weather

Japanese retailer MUJI is an absolute go-to when shopping for home essentials, though we’d vouch just as much for their range of apparel too. Well-made, and with a very “MUJI” point of view thanks to a philosophy of quality, functional everyday wear, the silhouettes are just as sleek and minimalist as their home goods, while price tags are kept affordable too. And if you thought it can’t get any better, there’s this — the latest MUJI New Collection 2022, their first-ever clothing line designed specifically for the hot and humid weather across ASEAN countries.

With t-shirts, lightweight overshirts, shorts, pants, and more, the difference here extends even to the fabric choices of organic cotton and lyocell, where the latter is consciously made from eucalyptus pulp. Both these are particularly chosen for their lightweight nature and excellent breathability when worn, giving the clothes a cool and comfortable touch when against the skin.

MUJI has also gone the extra mile to ensure that their lyocell is both top-grade and environmentally-friendly. It is produced in a closed loop system with economical use of energy and water; the solvent used in the process is non-toxic and often; while the overall lyocell production process is far less toxic and wasteful compared to fabrics such as rayon and viscose. Furthermore, lyocell is fully biodegradable, breathable, and absorbs moisture better than cotton.

The MUJI New Collection 2022 spans across three categories — Men’s and Ladies’ Wear, the MUJI Walker series for light exercise, and Home Wear. Read on as we elaborate on each of these categories.

MEN’S AND LADIES’ EVERYDAY WEAR

Cotton Lyocell Regular Collar Tunic in Dark Mustard, $49; Organic Cotton My Tote Bag Natural, $14.90.
Slub Jersey T-Shirt in Dark Navy, $15.90; Poplin Short Pants in Mustard, $24.90; Cotton Insole Slippers in Charcoal Grey, $10.90.

“Simple” is often far harder to execute than one may think, but MUJI nails the minimalist brief to perfection. The everyday line — for both men and women — accomplish the brand’s core tenets of function, affordability, and quality, especially since we’re talking about the good reputation of Japanese quality standards.

Lightweight organic cotton and lyocell feature across the womenswear and menswear, so you know they’re soft and breathable on skin, while the choice of colours range from neutrals of white, beige, brown, blue and black, to muted shades of brick red, khaki green, or smoky green and blue. Either way, it’s incredibly easy to mix and match these pieces with one another!

Interlock French Sleeve T-Shirt in Brick, $19.90; Water Repellent Short Pants in Black, $29.90.
Washed Broad Open Collar Short Sleeve Shirt in White, $39; Slub Jersey T-Shirt in Mocha Brown, $15.90.

The cohesive series also makes a case for layers — something we tend to avoid in Singapore. As you can see, the models sport open collar short sleeve shirts or cotton lyocell tunics over a regular t-shirt, making for an elevated everyday look that’s still breezy and breathable.

You can style the pieces however way you want as well; a jersey crew tee worn with shorts and layered with a tunic is perfect for the weekend, while the same tunic can be worn with chinos for a more formal style.

If you ask us for our picks, we’d recommend the Cotton Lyocell Regular Collar Tunic and Chino Wide pants for the ladies, and the Washed Broad Open Collar Short Sleeve Shirt and Cargo Short Pants for the men. Best worn layered!

MUJI WALKER SERIES

UV Protection Zip Up Hoody in Light Grey/Black, $29; Quick Dry Sleeveless T-Shirt in White, $19.90; UV Protection Quick Dry Tank Top in Yellow, $19.90; Quick Dry Short Pants in Yellow/Light Grey, $29.90; Quick Dry Leggings in Black, $29.90.

Ideal for light exercises and outdoor walks, the MUJI WALKER series incorporated activewear elements into everyday wear, with sweat-absorbing and quick-drying properties woven right into the fabric used across the collection. Bonus: these are stretchy, repel water, and equipped with UV protection too, Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50 to be precise, and therefore highly recommended on your walks, jogs, and hikes.

MUJI has since added several new designs to this series, including a Sweat-Absorbent Quick-Drying T-Shirt, Sleeveless T-Shirt, Short Pants, and Leggings in a variety of neutral and pleasant colours.

[click on the images below to expand.]

HOME WEAR

Heavy Weight French Sleeve T-Shirt in White, $19.90; Heavy Weight Jersey T-Shirt in White, $19.90; Washed Broad Short Pants in Smoky Blue, $24.90; Poplin Short Pants in Light Green, $24.90; Flip Flops in Off White, $12.90; Room Sandals Thong Ecru x Grey, $5.90.

Loungewear has been a matter of prime importance since our WFH days, and many of us aren’t intending to go back to our old and worn t-shirts any time soon. Looking presentable, and comfortable, even while at home is a possibility thanks to MUJI’s series of home wear items, a new series that launches in their ASEAN markets ahead of everywhere else.

The pieces here allow for ease of movement, with flattering and comfortable cuts across slub t-shirts, jersey shorts, jersey long pants and more. There’s also a comfy-looking rayon cotton jersey short sleeve dress and striped linen shirt tunics that remind us of classic PJs.

Samsung and Parisian Haute Couture house Maison Margiela have come together to release a subversive Galaxy Z Flip4 Maison Margiela Edition. Even the user interface is redesigned with special wallpaper and icons that model after the style of the fashion house. The phone will come with two cases; a leather cover with Margiela’s iconic four stitches emblem, and a second cover that references Maison Margiela’s numeric coding ring.
