Colour Blocking: The Latest Beauty Trend to Hit the Runways

In a blink of an eye, Fashion Week has swiftly made its way through New York and London. Thus far, we’ve seen a multitude of runway beauty looks that are captivating and effortless in equal measure, getting us excited for even more trends to be spotted in Milan.
Following the bright eyes and loud lips as seen at New York Fashion Week, Milan served up its very own version with amplified hues. Instead of featuring lurid pink and purples, vivid shades of orange and blue painted areas of the models’ faces as they sauntered down the runway. It’s no surprise that the Italian fashion capital would turn up the volume on the bold aspects of these emerging trends, infusing the makeup look with its very own reiteration of the brazen beauty.
Vibrant and hardly blended out, the beauty look of Milan was decidedly more geometric and opaque as spotted on the runways of Salvatore Ferragamo and Ports 1961. And though there hasn’t been a singular standout colour that’s dominating the colour blocking trend, we’ve been given a little taste of everything from audacious strokes of blue, red, yellow, green, and orange in their least subdued shades. These makeup artists sure are enjoying themselves playing with such bright colours, transforming fashion shows into beautiful bits of the rainbow.

Moschino's New Capsule Is To Die For

Now that’s an ironic title. As we’re pretty sure the main function of pills is to prevent that, right?

799548_in_xl 799551_in_xl 799554_in_xl

In all Moschino-esque provocative language and satirical fashion, we’re presented with a new capsule collection inspired by medication – or specifically enough, drug packagings. It’s a fun-filled, action-packed series of colourful garments and accessories which are bear the creative device of drug instructional inserts such as “Shake Well” and “Warning, before taking medicine check with your pharmacist”.

Medicine graphics can be seen across T-Shirts, dresses, and even tracksuits. A pill bottle is reimagined into an orange shoulder bag while a PVC blister clutch bag holding three-dimensional coloured pills made an appearance fresh from the Moschino SS17 runway itself. There’s also a series of irresistible iPhone covers which realistically resemble blister packs and pill bottles. Ah, that’s sure to cure our “need-for-everything-fashion-related” syndrome.

Forget About Tying Your Laces. Nike’s HyperAdapt Does That For You

It has been done. The humble sneaker has finally been brought to life in the form of self-lacers, and for that, we can thank the brilliant minds at Nike for this futuristic, game-changing invention.
The pair of kicks will be called the HyperAdapt 1.0, and will work just like the shoes worn by Michael J. Fox in Back to The Future II.
“We’re talking about a project that’s maybe the most difficult in the history of footwear,” Hatfield says. “I’m more excited about this than any project I’ve ever been involved with,” said Tinker Hatfield, designer of the HyperAdapt 1.0, in an exclusive interview with WIRED.
In a nutshell, these shoes will work by virtue of an internal cable system that senses your feet and tightens “laces” based on an algorithmic pressure equation. The “laces” are an intricate arrangement of fishing lines that are controlled by this system. So all you’ve got to do is slip these babies on and wait for the magic to happen.

Once the shoes have tightened and your feet are snug, LEDs placed in the heel will light up. These same LEDs will also light up once the shoe’s batteries are drained. A single charge will take approximately three hours and will last for two weeks.
The price of these sneakers has not yet been disclosed. But according to a tweet by Heidi Burgett, Nike’s Public Relations Director, the shoes will launch at select Nike retail stores in the US and will be based on appointments only.

Instax Fans Listen Up: A Michael Kors x Fujifilm Camera Is Happening

We’ve found something justifiably reasonable to freak out over (an understatement). And you’ll agree with us too. Get this: FUJIFILM is collaborating with Michael Kors to launch a special edition INSTAX Mini 70 instant film camera!

Sorry, we didn’t think that shriek was loud enough – you might want to fully give this news as much enthusiasm as you can. Not convinced yet?

Just picture it for us: the much hyped about polaroid camera which has been a household staple in recent years, but decked out in metallic gold finish. It has a super sleek design which perfectly encapsulates Michael Kors’s lavished and rich aesthetic, a brand logo stamped on the front of the case body, and even the designer’s signature itself comes showcased on the camera door (perhaps a symbolic thumbs up from the fashion virtuoso himself).

The Instax camera comes with a high-performance flash which automatically calculates the brightness of your surroundings before adjusting the shutter speed accordingly. And for all you selfie lover out there, you’ll be pleased to switch mediums from Instagram to instant films now as the Michael Kors x FUJIFILM Instax camera has a smart selfie mode which promises to capture the most flattering frame of you.

Directly inspired by the Michael Kor’s Scout handbag collection (which, ironically enough, was in turn inspired by vintage camera bags), the partnership between the two brand sure is an exciting case of fashion-meets-tech. “Fashion and photography are about giving a voice to individuals as they express themselves, and this exclusive INSTAX Mini 70 by Michael Kors is the pinnacle of style and substance,” said Mark Yamamoto, President and CEO of FUJIFILM.

MICHAEL KORS x FUJIFILM INSTAX Mini 70, $299. Available for a limited time only from 20 October onwards at all Michael Kors stores. michaelkors.com.

All The BeautyBlender Alternatives Out There

The BeautyBlender is the accepted standard for makeup sponges – the ubiquitous teardrop-shaped sponge, most commonly in neon pink or black but has also been seen in other variants like red, purple, nude and white, shot to fame after pro makeup artists and high-profile beauty bloggers touted it as the way to apply your makeup with a flawless finish. Of course we’re BeautyBlender users as well, and it is indeed a great product that has become a necessary part of our makeup application regimes, but what we’re saying here is, it’s far from being the only option out there.
The BeautyBlender’s meteoric rise to fame has predictably spawned a whole bunch of similar products from other brands, which has expanded the makeup sponge category vastly so that consumers today have a whole lot more to choose from, as compared to the pre-BeautyBlender days.
Of course, more options are always welcome. What with all the different sponges made for various makeup needs from brands of a spectrum of price ranges out there, the jury’s still out on whether the BeautyBlender is the ultimate makeup sponge – you can start finding out by trying these options.

Faux Fayc Fauxtool Soft Focus Perfection Sponge

We love that this very edgy makeup brand was started right here in Singapore – shoutout to their rad Fauxstix Matte Liquid Lipsticks – and how they’re paving the way in the local beauty industry by making a comprehensive range of makeup products of credible quality.
This bell-shaped sponge feels significantly firmer than the BeautyBlender’s material, and the wider bottom is meant to be used for blending foundation, concealer, highlighter etc., while the narrower top is for harder to reach parts of the face, like the sides of the nose and around the eyes.
$22, Faux Fayc store at B1-32A Plaza Singapura and fauxfayc.com

Real Techniques Complex Sponge

Pretty much everyone we know owns at least one Real Techniques brush, because it really is hard to find another brand that’s so good at making very affordable yet quality makeup brushes. So of course, we expect their sponges to be great too. Many have touted this as a very credible BeautyBlender dupe, with an additional flat edge to contour around the eyes and nose. We like the fun orange colour, too.
$16, Sephora. realtechniques.com

Wander Cushion

What gets us first about this sponge is definitely that rich burgundy hue that immediately makes it look so luxe. The Wander Cushion is from Wander Beauty, a travel-themed line by former supermodel Linda Ellingson. Similar to Real Techniques, this one is teardrop-shaped with a flat surface for better reach.
US$11, net-a-porter.com. wanderbeauty.com

Cala Beauty Blending Sponge

If you’re on a budget, the drugstore has options too. Cala is a US-based supplier of makeup tools, and they have their version of the makeup sponge that comes in at just under $10 (thanks, Watsons sale!). The top half looks exactly like a BeautyBlender, while the bottom half is hourglass-shaped and made wider to ensure a more even coverage.
$9.90, Watsons. calaproduct.com

Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Strobe Light Sculptor

The shape on this one is unlike anything else we’ve seen before, when it comes to makeup sponges. That’s because it was designed to apply Hourglass’ famous Ambient Strobe Lighting Powders, with the angled top to apply the highlighter, and the bottom to diffuse it to get that “ambient light” effect on your skin.
$35, Sephora. hourglasscosmetics.com

MAKE UP FOR EVER Ellipse Sponge

Now, this shape is even more unusual. As the name implies, we guess this is an ellipse, which is defined as a  “rectangular oval”. This was made to be used with Make Up For Ever’s new Water Blend foundation, which has an ultra-light texture, and is meant to be applied with a technique called the “press n’ roll”.
Basically, you apply the foundation with the flat surface of the sponge, then fold it and gently roll the curved surface over the skin to evenly blend.
$18, Sephora. makeupforever.com

Sephora Flawless Complexion Sponge

We’d compare Sephora’s version to one of those spinning tops, what with the wide contours in the middle and the extra-sharp ends. All these also mean that this can really be used to apply a wide variety of products on almost every part of the face, from the forehead and jaw, to the sides of the nose, to around the eyes and lips.

Why This Little Girl's Coloured Hair Drew a Lot of Haters

Our social media feeds are often saturated with the latest beauty trends. These days, we find ourselves jumping on board the rainbow hair train, dyeing our locks in pretty pastel hues to satisfy our inner 6-year-olds. But when an actual 6-year-old girl did the same, it garnered some pretty negative responses.

Last month, a hair stylist in Florida, Mary Thomaston shared a photo of her 6-year-old daughter Lyra and her freshly-coloured hair on Instagram. The hairstylist mum gave her daughter a unicorn-inspired hairdo, with her full length coloured in teal and a trendy side-shaved style tinged with purple, pink and yellow. The results were obviously way too cool for Lyra’s first grade in school. The photo had received of positive reactions, but some people decided to use that opportunity to judge Mary Thomaston’s parenting skills, saying that it’s inappropriate for a young girl to sport such a vibrant look and that her daughter’s hair has been damaged in doing so.

Little did these haters know, transforming Lyra’s hair drastically wasn’t a decision that was made on a whim. According to Mary, Lyra had been begging for a colourful ‘do for years, until her mum finally caved in. She chose to use Manic Panic hair dyes which are non-toxic and non-permanent so it’s safer for Lyra’s hair. She also checked with Lyra’s school to make sure her new hair wouldn’t be a violating to any existing rules, and she had a serious discussion with Lyra about what it means to make such a extreme change. This responsible parent has it all under control and she knows that there’s nothing more important than putting a smile on her little girl’s face. And look at Lyra, she clearly loves her new look!

Mama Bear also had a few words for the naysayers. She commented, “Dear Haters, I have this weird goal of raising self confident, self assured children, who know and feel the freedom of self-expression. So when my child asks for blue hair, I tell her how much I like her choice and how beautiful she is. Even better, I do it with quality products, that not only respect the integrity of her hair, but also fades out with time. I am not sure how you are raising your children, but keep your unwelcome opinions to yourself in regards to my child rearing. You do not like blue, cool, say so. You don’t like rainbow hair, cool, say that. These things are opinions you are entitled to, your disrespectful comments about my child are not. Lastly, I am not sure who the f*** does your hair, if you have chosen bad stylists in that past. But you are 100% inaccurate is assuming my child’s hair was damaged in this process. As a trained and licensed stylist, I can assure you it was not. Oh, and keep your negativity off my page next time.”

Plan Your Travels Easily with Google’s New Trips App

Planning. It’s the bane of every tourist. Plan too little and you might find yourself out of whack in a foreign land. Do the reverse, and your holiday might just end up becoming too rigid.
Trying to reach that perfect balance is Google Trips – a new mobile app helps you organise plane tickets and hotel reservations, as well as offers you vacation recommendations and tips based on your Google history. It’s basically your very own personalised tour guide.
“We wanted to reduce the hassle and help travelers enjoy their hard-earned vacations,” Stefan Frank, the app’s product manager, wrote on Google’s blog. “Google Trips can help you build your day around places you already know you want to visit,” he added.
Of course, if you’re uncomfortable with letting Google essentially track your every move, then this app isn’t for you. However, if you’re not too concerned about that, Google Trips has plenty of neat features that are really useful for saving time, and making the best out of your holiday.

04_5_combo

07_71_combo

For example, the app contains comprehensive guides to more than 200 cities. Its features include reservations, things to do, saved places, day plans, food & drink, and getting around. You can read reviews by other users, while itineraries are churned out for you on the go.
Best of all, the app comes free-of-charge, and you can pre-download all its data beforehand to save yourself from a hefty mobile fee by using the app offline.
The only requirement needed to use Trips? You’ve got to own a Google account.
Google Trips is now available for download on both Android and iOS.

Everything In The Ridiculously Cute Disney x THEFACESHOP Makeup Collection

We don’t think it’s humanly possible to resist a BB cushion with Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, or Monsters Inc.‘s Mike Wazowski on the cover – that’s why our money is on this Disney x THEFACESHOP collection becoming one of the most popular ones this year.
THEFACESHOP is no stranger to downright adorable collaborative collections (the recent Kakaotalk one also has our hearts), but by tying up with Disney, they’re speaking right to the kid in all of us. Because when you put Mickey ears on lip colours, that’s it: we’re sold.
See the entire collection below – how many of these will you be grabbing?

Cushions
These three character cushions ($32 each) aren’t just jazzed up versions of existing products, but they’re actually brand new formulas. The BB Power Perfection Mickey Mouse is an ultra-hydrating formula that leaves the skin looking firm and plumped up; the CC Cooling Cushion Winnie the Pooh is also made for dry skin, leaving a soothing cooling sensation upon application; while the CC Long-Lasting Cushion Mike Wazowski is more about long-lasting coverage, smoothing the skin and covering pores in a natural finish. You’ll notice that even the puff applicators come specially designed.

There’s also the option to load up on sun protection with the two sunscreen cushions ($30 each), which provide a SPF24/PA++ protection, if you’re not a fan of smearing on sunscreen with your hands. It comes in two different packaging designs, one featuring Mickey, the other his one true love, Minnie. Guess we have no choice but to get both then.

Eye makeup
What’s better than eyeshadow palettes? Disney eyeshadow palettes, i.e. these Mono Pop Eyes Palettes ($33) that come in Mickey, Pooh or Mike variations on the outside packaging, and a range of six eyeshadow shades plus two lip colours on the inside, all featuring various combinations of wearable nudes.

There’s also the Coloring Stick Eyeshadow ($11), a crayon-type product in four neutral shimmery shades, that you can easily blend anywhere around your eyes. Add definition with the All-Proof Automatic Eyeliner ($12) and the All-Proof Mascara ($19-$25), that comes in 3 levels of water resistance: the Daily Proof is good enough for regular defence against oil and grime, the Super Proof takes it up a notch by promising to be budge-proof as well, while the Mega Waterproof is super waterproof and super volumising, lengthening and curling.

Lip makeup
There are three different textures to choose from here: the Ink Gel Stick ($22), a moisturising lipstick with a super-saturated colour payoff; for something that goes on like more of a stain, the Watery Tint ($8) can be easily layered; or to keep things simple with a lip balm, there’s the Tinted Lip Balm ($12) in two natural shades.

Lightweight Sunscreens to Keep You Fresh in the Heat

Skin so oily and prone to breakouts that you’ll sometimes skip moisturiser and even forgo the sunscreen? Well, that’s not cool at all. Finding the perfect sunscreen for oilier complexions can be a real struggle because anything that’s mildly greasy might unleash hell on the surface of your face. However, we’ve discovered a few lightweight sunscreens that not only protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, but also contain nourishing ingredients to treat and hydrate your skin – minus the slick! These formulas are thin and they’ll make a great smooth and matte base for the rest of your makeup routine.

Combat Rain with The Converse Rubber Footwear Collection

Rain in Singapore can be quite a lovely affair. Chilling indoors on a drizzle-soaked afternoon is surely better than walking around in the sweltering heat right? Star Wars Superga Shoes

Your One-Stop Dining Guide to Palais Renaissance

palais renaissance

For all the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road, there stands one establishment that is pretty peaceful compared to the rest of the crowd. That place is Palais Renaissance. Located in between the sleaze of Orchard Towers and the towering façade of the Royal Thai Embassy, this glitzy shopping centre is like a hidden gem of sorts, home to a medley of stylish retail brands and plush dining venues.
Although there aren’t many restaurants here – there are only four in total – Palais Renaissance makes up for its lack of quantity with quality. And here’s all you need to know about this underrated dining destination.
Ishinomaki Grill & Sake Bar

Ishinomaki

If you love Japanese food, in particular robatayaki and izakaya, then you should definitely make a beeline for Ishinomaki Grill & Sake Bar. This rustic restaurant specializes in seafood dishes, and they even have what is called a “Black Box”, which is basically a collection of daily-changing fresh seafood that is flown in directly from Japan. The Black Box is available every Tuesday and Friday. Diehard foodies can also partake in Kaiseki, a traditional Japanese dinner-style that involves multiple-courses.
Visit ishinomaki.com.sg.
P. Bistro
P. Bistro, Palais Renaissance

P. Bistro packs all the different cuisines that make bistro grub great – think French, Italian, and even Asian fusion dishes. For instance, they serve Vietnamese-styled beef noodle soup and Nonya dory fish with Peranakan sauce and achar. Workers in the surrounding area can also look forward to extremely affordable lunch sets that start from $18 onwards over here.
Visit p-bistro.com.
Jing Hua Xiao Chi
Jing Hua Xiao Chi, Palais Renaissance

There are plenty of fantastic Chinese restaurants in Singapore. But if you’re in the Orchard district and you’re looking for some traditional Chinese food, you can’t go too wrong with Jing Hua Xiao Chi. This 95-seater eatery serves up stuff like xiao long bao and pan-fried pork and seafood dumplings, while they’ve also got spirits like Chinese wine, shochu, and Scottish whisky in their alcoholic arsenal.

PS. Café
img_8476_resizedcopy

They say old is gold. For PS. Café, that saying cannot ring more true. The popular café chain is the OG of hip, indie dining spots, having opened within the Project clothing store in 1999. Now, diners can enjoy a unique assortment of dishes from one of Singapore’s favourite cafés at Palais Renaissance. Over here, there will be classic PS. Café dishes like PS crab and prawn laksa, spaghetti crab mee goreng, as well as crab and pork tagliolini.
