Why Tanjong Beach Club Is Our Ultimate Beach Getaway

There’s nothing quite like the unparalleled ocean view, some good sun and the calm sea, to escape from the city — even better when this place is a short drive from our CBD. If you’re up for the beach life over the weekend, it’s hard to miss the relaxed vibes and good grub over at Tanjong Beach Club, which is the kind of tropical paradise that your friends living in temperate countries get seriously jealous about.

TanjongBeachClub_Outdoors_01 TanjongBeachClub_TheDiningRoom_01

You can book a day bed to lounge around in, laze by the pool, dine in the restaurant, or join one of their pool parties for a boozy good time. It helps that this part of the beach isn’t as crowded as the other stretches, while still offering the same pristine waters and fine sand — you get lunch with a view. We swear, time even moves slower here. So, since you already get an idea of how this ideal locale fills, how about the food?
Beach Shop_4 Beach Shop_8

Well, our verdict is that it’s just as enticing, especially when we’ve gotten to taste some of the items off their new menu. Here are some of the highlights, and really, why you should be spending your entire weekend break at the coastal retreat:
1. Just Look at the Seafood!
TBC Seafood Platter ($128.00)_Crispy Calamari ($20.00)_1 Barbequed Octopus Salad_$24.00

Being a restaurant by the sea, it’s no wonder that they serve some fresh seafood, the kind that’s light and easy on the palette. According to The Lo & Behold Group, the people that manage the place, they’re looking for a menu that’s a mix of “classic international seafood dishes with a unique spin”, something that consultant chef Jason Jones has managed to create, after taking inspiration from his favourite beachfront vacations all across the world.
You’ve got coastal cuisine such as a Barbecued Octopus Salad ($23) which you can find in the previous offering but now prepared differently, lightly grilled and served atop a bed of baby spinach, quinoa and pomegranate, as well as a monstrous TBC Seafood Platter ($128) consisting of a whole Maine lobster, oysters, prawns, and blue crab rillette. Even the Crispy Calamari ($20), served with a lemon saffron aioli, makes for food that you’d love to pinch after a refreshing swim.
Snapper Ceviche_$23.00

As for this Snapper Ceviche ($23), we tried it and seriously enjoyed it. It’s clear that this was made with fresh snapper, and when tossed with lime and creamy avocado, these lift the dish without bogging it down with heaviness, making it a refreshing appetiser that we can keep going back to with our fork as it’s both sweet and creamy, light and tangy. The side of crispy tortilla chips helps too, giving the dish a nice crunchy texture at parts.
Lobster Bun_$38.00 Market Fresh Fish of the Day_$35.00

The mains we tried were just as impressive. Everyone loves a good lobster roll, but they’ve decided to go for a burger too, which is just as brilliant thanks to the perfectly toasted burger buns. No doubt, the Lobster Bun ($38) was the star of the day, and a hot item too, not just because of the generous portions of juicy lobster meat that’s practically spilling onto the plate, but also because they’ve dressed it up with the perfect sauce: lime mayonaise and avocado. Similar to the ceviche, this lends a light, non-cloying flavour to the dish, instead of the heavy or greasy alternatives that exist out there.
Then, there’s the Market Fresh Fish of the Day ($35), whatever happens to be the fresh catch that day, served with a side of tomato and pine nut salsa, tossed in basil emulsion. That combination of flavours is complements any fish they usually serve, a soft and flaky halibut that day. All these dishes, and more, are available on their all-day dining menu, so while we imagine munching on them in the day, you could still order them while on a romantic dinner date.
2. Totally Instagram-worthy Cocktails
Hollywood Punch_$23.00 Pina Colada_$17.00

Let’s just let the images sink in for a while… it’s alcohol, served in a wooden boat, for goodness sake! These are definitely the stuff we can get on board with, the first, being a concoction called the Hollywood Punch ($41). Yes, it’s way too much alcohol for one person, that’s why this serves at least two, and comes sailing to you in an impressive vessel, garnished with mint (ours had frangipani flowers). The tiki-inspired beverage, a variation of punch, consists of Havana rum, absinthe, banana liqueur, coconut water, lemon juice and orgeat, and apparently cold-dripped coffee as well, which is a delicious combination of flavours that feel like a Summer holiday on your tongue. Interesting, not boring, yet satisfying because you’re getting all these refreshing notes and familiar tropical flavours.
Their Piña Colada ($23) wins points for presentation too, since it comes in a hollowed out frozen pineapple, while bar mentor Julian Serna does a new twist on the classic staple, this time combining Havana rum, Mahiki rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream. There are also other noteworthy cocktails you should try: the Tanjong Spritz ($19) and the Sunset Daiquiri ($23), served in a seashell, and a balanced rum-based cocktail as well. Both new drinks are out this weekend.
3. A Whole Lot of Good Stuff on their Brunch Menu
Mushrooms and Toast_$19.00 Eggs Benedict_$21.00

I mean, what’s a weekend without this right? There’s a variety of hearty and light staples here, but we’ll zoom in to the cafe classics — the Mushrooms & Toast ($19) and Eggs Benedict ($24) that’s poached egg served atop Norwegian smoked salmon. For the latter, the mushrooms are served on the side with a mix of poached egg and baby spinach, ingredients for the most delectable dip on the island, while the toast comes with a generous smear of goat’s curd.
The Weekender Fry-Up_$29.00 Acai Bowl_$21.00

The menu’s great for a group of people, or well indecisive folks, because there’s something for everyone: take this hearty feast of The Weekender Fry-Up ($29) that has all the works, including eggs, bacon, chipolata, mushrooms, smashed potato, homemade baked beans, tomatoes and toast. Did we miss anything out?  It’s the best and most comforting kind of English breakfast now served to you by the pool.
If you’re not a big breakfast eater, head straight for the Acai Bowl ($21), a health nut’s dream because of the nutritious blend of organic acai berries, bananas and apricot, topped off with blueberries, a mango and inca berry confit, toasted coconut, and crunchy hazelnut granola. The brunch menu is served on weekends and public holidays, from 10am – 3pm.
4. These Desserts
Banana Coconut Tarte Tatin ($16.00) _Cheesecake with Strawberries ($15.00)_1 Banana Coconut Tarte Tatin ($16.00) _Cheesecake with Strawberries ($15.00)_2

Something we can’t resist talking about, especially when they’re such a perfect way to end the meal. We’ve got the Cheesecake with Strawberries ($15), not your usual because this comes slightly deconstructed, with the elements of cheesecake, dehydrated strawberries, strawberry ice cream and crumble laid out like a pretty picture. It’s not your typically cloying treat too, since this one’s a lightweight yoghurt cheese mousse that will have you wiping the dish clean in seconds.
For a rich touch, go ahead and order the Banana Coconut Tarte Tatin ($16), a signature item with caramelised banana, almond crunch and vanilla ice cream. It reminded us of a sticky date tart, due to the sweet and gooey nature of the dish, and was so good we didn’t mind that we can’t taste much of the coconut here. The almond crunch made changed up the texture, so much so, that each scoop seemed like a new, delectable bite of the dessert once again.

These Yummy-Looking Pokémon Burgers Are Just Super Cute

Pokémon Burgers Down N' Out

Okay, so it’s official. The whole world has gone bat-shit crazy over Pokémon, and you know that the obsession is real when you’ve got restaurants selling pokéburgers (i.e. burgers that look exactly like Pokémon). The main culprit behind this new food trend of course is Down N’Out – a restaurant in Sydney that is the Aussie version of America’s popular In-N-Out food chain.

Down N’Out’s pokéburgers are inspired by the designs of Pikachu, Bulbasaur and Charmander, with the flavours of each burger represented by their “type”. For instance, the Bulbasaur burger is packed with veggies like lettuce and pickles, while the Charmander one is slathered with spicy orange lava cheese. The Pikachu burger looks the most adorable for sure, with its stuffed tortilla chips and French Fries.

Ben Kagan, from Hashtag Burgers, the group behind Down N’ Out, sure knows what his favourites are. “If I feel like something fresh, I’d devour a Bulbasaur,” he told CNBC. “Otherwise Pikachu is my favourite, though it requires a long walk afterwards.”

From now till 3 September, all three burgers (priced at $15) will be on sale at Down N’ Out burgers CBD pop-up store. However, there is a catch. Customers won’t be able to pick which burgers they can purchase, and after making their orders, they’ll receive a random burger out of the three flavours.
So if you’re thinking of eating them all, you might have to part with quite a bit of dough. But don’t worry, that’s just all part and parcel of becoming the ultimate Pokémon Master.

These Eevee-Themed Highlighters Have Got Us Even More Pokémon-Obessed

Those familiar with the Nintendo version of Pokémon would remember this: how elusive it is to come across a shiny Pokémon, apparently a 1 in 8192 chance, that feeling when you finally chance upon it in the wild, and that mix of excitement to catch it as well as the real fear of it running away from you, never to be seen again. If that sounds familiar, you already have an edge over all those crazy Pokémon Go casuals all over the streets these days — I mean, that’s a real thing to go crazy about! Not some 49CP Blastoise (which you’ll still catch anyway).
We’re definitely just a little obsessed about the Japanese pocket monsters these days, but it’s really hard to call them that in the face of one of the cutest critters in the first gen game: eevee. A wide-eyed, adorable little fella that has multiple powerful evolutions — we’ve already seen three in the current mobile game, Vaporeon, Flareon, and Jolteon, but if you count the entire universe, there are way more “eeveelutions” out there, a total of 9 different types!

elemental2-400x400         elemental1-400x400

Shiro Cosmetics understands the hype, and has successfully managed to create 9 Eevee-themed highlighters so you can finally catch that elusive shiny you need. The indie cosmetics company has previously come up with fandom-based collections including the likes of LoTR, Studio Ghibli, Harry Potter, but this has to be their most timely collection yet. Way to play into our pop culture hearts. Called “Elemental Glows”, there are 9 different cream highlighters tied to each Eevee type, while the makeup is supposed to give “a subtle, long-lasting glow without ever feeling heavy or greasy”.

vaporous3 vaporous1 pyro3 pyro1

The cover art on the packaging, by Daisy Dee, is just as gorgeous, both cute and cult-worthy at the same time. Of course, each highlighter corresponds to the Eeveelutions they’re named after — when in the case, the colours for “Vaporous” (Vaporeon), “Jolted” (Jolteon) and “Pyro” (Flareon) do come off a bit intense, but go ahead and swirl your brush in it before lightly dabbing it on the high points of your face; you should get a luminous wash of glow that corresponds to their respective colours and elements, namely water, fire and electricity.

jolted3 jolted1 eon3 eon1

“Eon” (Eevee) is meant to give off a bronzy glow that makes it look like you have golden sun-kissed skin. The cream highlighters are best applied lightly with dry fingertips over moisturized skin or liquid/cream foundations, not powder ones.

glacial3 glacial1 sylphid3 sylphid1

Our favourites though are really “Glacial” (Glaceon) and “Sylphid” (Sylveon). The former accurately gives off the vibes of the powerful ice-type Pokémon, with a frosty sheen that will put Queen Elsa to shame, and for the latter, it’s described as a “soft rosy blush pink”, though it looks the most ethereal to us, like a gorgeous and subtle shade of rose gold on your face.
Head over to their website to look at the exact swatches before investing your USD12 into a single shade — though really, why hesitate? They look so good, and so on point, that you, well, gotta catch ’em all.

Here's Why Elie Saab's 2016 Fall Couture Was His Most Glamorous Show To Date

When we think about New York, the first thing that comes to mind is the roaring 1930s; the romantic old hollywood glamour, sequin column dresses (and an equally sparkling cocktail to match), the joy and laughter which made up the great wall of escapism and of course, the glistening hope concealed deep within such a promising grand city. Elie Saab definitely was on the same page as us, citing good ol’ 1930s New York as his inspiration behind his 2016 Fall couture line.

We witnessed Elie Saab’s usual grandeur and femininity being taken up a notch with the fusion of an inimitable rich Lebanese flair, with the culture and influences from The Great America. We could already picture the time where countless Americans and immigrants put on a brave face, flocking through downtown New York as jazz served as a feel-good background tune as the sultry evening dresses made its way down the runway. We love the motif of the iconic crown-shaped Art Deco Chrysler building, which made its appearance on a couple of gowns. There’s really nothing more symbolic than the architectural facade of the landmark, which fundamentally encompasses such an era. The combination of star-bust ornamentations, lush velvets and gold-thread embroidery is more than enough to channel the glow of a stunning Golden Era showgirl. Power shoulders staged a strong comeback entrance, with it’s date by the arm: a deconstructed peplum tux suit, which was a breakthrough from Elie Saab’s standard lady-like, high-slit dresses. What really caught our eye was the lavish accentuation of bird and floral motifs, which seem to address the designer’s personal sentiments regarding freedom and flight, directed at his own migration to New York from war-torn Lebanon in his early years. The fact that we’ve transported inside Saab’s world of Middle Eastern nostalgia and pilgrimage through a series of evening gowns really says a lot about the designer’s grip on his audience.

It took a lot for us to regain our composure when we saw ‘kiddie couture’ making its first appearance on the Paris runway. Elie Saab sent adorable little girls in couture gowns which matched the adult versions gliding by their side. It’s nice to see mommy-daughter fashion making it’s debut onto the runway, and we think it’s safe to say that the risqué décolleté and sexy bare backs we saw on the ladies did not see the light of day for the little angels.

You Have To See These Magnetic Face Masks

We get the impression that there’s really never enough beauty products to go around, which kind of explains the never-ending evolution of face masks over the years. We’ve seen animal print masks (are we the only ones terribly afraid of these?), $400 Givenchy lace masks that we can never afford, and the ever-popular peel off masks. There’s just something about trying out different variations of super-enriched formulas on our faces that’s got us pining for more. Behold, the magnetic face mask, which has been taking over our social media feed recently with little snippets of the mask bouncing off the face onto a magnet held within close proximity. It’s almost like magic. Yes, our major freak-out moment and spewing of “OMG” were justified.

So what’s the science behind this? Apparently, the masks are made with an iron, powder-based formula which is activated by magnetic particles. The magnet lifts the mask of the skin, dragging along all the dirt and nasty junk we’ve got hidden underneath our pores (we’re referring to you, blackheads and sebum). The rich antioxidant ingredients in the mask also helps to neutralise the radicals left behind from these face pollutants before tightening up our pores after.

Talk about convenient. We’re saying goodbye to the days of bending over a sink, scrubbing away at our mask-stained faces with wet T-shirts. Inventions like these are perfect for lazy bums like us. Plus, it sounds like a whole lot of fun to use. Check out some of our top picks of magnetic face masks:

First Look Into Urban Decay's Exciting Eyeshadow Palette

We can never go wrong with Urban Decay. And that’s why we rejoiced when our favourite make-up label gave us a sneak peek into the newest release of Naked palette to drop this coming Holiday.

Naked Ultimate Basics-hero_final

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Palette, $83

Newcomer alert! There’s a brand new addition to the Naked team; and that’s the Naked Ultimate Basics palette, featuring 12 new matte and Naked shades ranging from dusty pinks to rusty mauves (our personal favourite). You’ll achieve the flawless earthy eye look you’ve always wanted to have with this. Contrary to it’s name, there’s nothing basic about this palette.

We can already feel our wallets emptying themselves this coming Holiday. As much as we’d like to get into the season of giving, we can’t help but scheme our way to snatch these for ourselves before they sell out and end up in every make-up junkie’s drawers instead of our own. But if you’re feeling a little generous (unlike us), you’ll want to get these for your girlfriends. Trust us, they’ll be overjoyed.

Urban Decay Ultimate Basics Palette, $83. Available from November onwards at all Sephora stores and Urban Decay Free-Standing Stores at VivoCity & Bugis Junction. sephora.com.

Cuphead – A Trippy Video Game with 1930’s Cartoon Graphics

Cuphead Video Game

Boxing frogs. Giant mermaids. The Devil. Put these components together, and it sounds like a twisted concoction of a psychedelic nightmare. Except of course, this isn’t actually a real nightmare, but a teeny portion of Cuphead’s wacky visuals.
Produced by StudioMDHR, the trippy, 1930’s cartoon-inspired game is basically a run-and-gun game, with a 2-D backdrop that is similar to Super Mario, or Metal Slug for that matter. There’s a whimsical feel to the gameplay – old school jazz is blaring in the background, while your character evades enemies and shoots them with plasma blasts from his finger. It’s kind of like Alice in Wonderland but on steroids.

Cuphead Pirate Video Game

In an interview with TIME Magazine, lead artist Chad Moldenhauer revealed that he and his brother Jared (the co-producer) grew up watching whatever their parents grew up watching, which was essentially stuff from the 1930’s. This, coupled with their love for games like Contra Hard Corps, Super Mario World and Street Fighter III, served as an inspiration for the arresting, surrealistic design style of Cuphead.
Everything – from the visuals to the audio – is tirelessly produced from the same techniques of the early 20th century. That includes hand-drawn and hand-inked animation, watercolour backgrounds, and even original jazz recordings! Talk about dedication here.
Cuphead Video Game Sketches

But Cuphead isn’t all about innovative, vintage graphics. The gameplay has plenty of depth to it too. Gamers can expect a whole raft of fun features, like visiting peculiar lands, getting new weapons, learning super moves, and discovering hidden secrets. Giant, screen-filling bosses will test your skills to the limit, while there’s also a two-player local co-op mode, where players can play as both Cuphead and Mugman!
Cuphead is scheduled to launch later this year on Xbox One and PC. Visit the official website at cupheadgame.com.

Japanese Grub Under $20 at Park Bench Deli this Saturday!

Park Bench Deli Goes Japanese

Japanese food is damn freaking awesome; that’s something we can all agree with. But sad to say, it’s just so expensive in Singapore – especially at the good places. Thankfully, Park Bench Deli is here to settle all that with their special pop-up event this Saturday, 27 August 2016.

Park Bench Deli Goes Japanese Poster

In collaboration with Teppei Syokudo, the event will feature delicious Japanese dishes under $20, with goodies like Chirashi Tataki ($12), Unagi Tempura ($12), and Chicken Katsu ($15) all prepped for guests. There’ll even be great Japanese beer to enjoy too. The Koen no Benchi ($15) – a limited edition custom brew by Hitachino Nest Beer – is the perfect beverage for washing down all that grub.
If you want something other than Japanese food, there’s still Park Bench Deli’s usual menu to go for. Think sandwiches like a Kong Bak Banh Mi ($16), Cubano Sandwich with seared pulled pork and smoked ham ($16), as well as a Patty Melt ($17); a sandwich that consists of beef chuck patty (150g), caramelised onions and American cheese.
Lastly, there’s no need to worry about stuffing yourself too much. You can always dance off those calories to the rhythmic beats of DJs Intriguant and Drem. Or you could just sit back, relax, and booze and binge eat for the entire afternoon. Either way, this event looks like it’s going to be a blast!
Park Bench Deli Goes Japanese is happening on 27 August 2016, from 2pm to 10pm. Visit the event page at www.facebook.com/events.

All Aboard: An Inside Look At Dior Express

Dior took the guest list for their 2017 Cruise show, and ushered them aboard a literal cruise through England. Carrying A-listers such as Elizabeth Olsen, Bella Hadid and Kate Mara from London to Blenheim Palace where the Cruise 2017 collection was debuted, the Paris-based house basically outfitted an entire train in classic Dior fashion; with decadence and style.

We can’t seem to ever look at SMRT carriages the same way again after this. And you know we’re not exactly over-exaggerating, especially since we’re talking about an hour long voyage of champagne-sippin’, artisanal meals, and a lush environment which BEGS to be Instagrammed.

Ah, what we would give in order to trade up the daily sweaty morning commute for a ride to work in the Dior Express everyday. But for now, managing to get a seat on an empty train may just be our own form of ‘luxury’ (and we’ll try to be okay with that).

WATCH: Hacking Game Watch Dogs 2’s Trailer is Super Sick!

Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft

We usually get pumped when we see good video game trailers. But rarely have we wanted to buy a video game so badly after checking out its preview. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs 2 happens to be that game.
The hacktivist, open-world game is set in the streets of San Francisco’s Bay Area, where players are able to explore virtual replicas of sunny beaches, crowded city walkways and towering rooftops, all the while hacking almost any kind of electrical device possible! That includes taking control of people’s cars, siphoning someone else’s batteries to charge your own phone, and even sending out mass distress signals to crowds.

Basically, you get to be king of the technological world. But the coolest thing about Watch Dogs 2 though, is that its open world gameplay is seriously smooth. Say goodbye to the burden of lagged-up online lobbies and loading screens and say hello to sweet co-op play where you can approach random players and set missions with them to cause utter chaos. Awesome!
Hacking in Watch Dogs 2

Besides the integrated co-op play, Watch Dogs 2 has a new mode called Bounty Hunter, where up to three players will chase you down if you’re too much of a troublemaker. They take you down – they get the spoils, unless you manage to avoid or eliminate them first. If that happens, you’ll be the one walking away with the rewards.
Lastly, previous modes such as Online Invasion and Team Deathmatch will also allow you to prove who the best hacker is in town, making this one of 2016’s hottest video games to look out for!
Watch Dogs 2 will launch for PS4, Xbox One and PC on 15 November 2016. The game will launch on PS4 30 days before other platforms. Pre-order yours now at watchdogs.ubisoft.com.

It’s Confirmed; Disney’s Making a Live-Action Little Mermaid Film!

Disney's Little Mermaid

When news broke of Disney’s plans to make a live-action movie of the Little Mermaid earlier this year, we had our fingers crossed – things weren’t confirmed after all. Thankfully, now plans have become reality, and Disney will be reviving its classic flick, with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken appointed as songwriters.
Musically speaking, fans have a lot to look forward to. Menken has written some pretty neat jams for Disney over the years, including scores for the original Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast films. So moviegoers can expect some of their favourite tunes from the 1989 animated film, as well as the infusion of brand-new music from Miranda.
That said; Disney’s remake isn’t going to be the only live-action Little Mermaid adaptation to hit the big screens. Universal Pictures and British production company Working Title are working on their own version, which will be based on Hans Christian Andersen’s original tale rather than Disney’s popularised animated film, with Chloe Grace Moretz starring as a blonde, non-red headed Ariel.
While there’s no official word on who’s being cast in Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid yet, or its exact release date, there are plenty of other rebooted animated classics to look forward to in the meantime. There’s the remake of Beauty and the Beast, which comes out in theatres next year, as well as the 101 Dalmations origins story of “Cruella”, which has Emma Stone starring as the iconic villain.
Whatever the case may be; it’s a good time to be alive if you’re a Disney fan.

Gigi Hadid's Best Looks

We’d like to know the secret underlying Gigi Hadid’s dominance in the fashion world. Maybe it has something to do with how she manages to rock off-duty styling so naturally. It’s as though she doesn’t even have to try. (Cue envious pout). Love her or hate her, deep down we all know we want to be her. Here are the times where Gigi practically owned the streets she walked on by donning these beauties.

If you’re anything like us, then your eyes must have immediately shifted to the blonde when you think ‘Gigi Hadid’. What can we say? It’s habit. But back when Gigi was a brunette, she still brought her A-game out with this head-to-toe cotton candy pink ensemble. While being all #twinsies with Kendall Jenner, Gigi had everyone talking about this outfit for weeks (but in our case, months).

We can’t get over how Gigi managed to make a snowsuit-looking oversized coat with unfinished hems look so chic.

So that’s where the whole colour-blocking streamline trend of 2016 originated from. Seems like she called the comeback of chokers-matching-your-tops before anyone ever did.

We think its justified to say that we’ll probably never look like that walking down the street.

Look us in the eye and tell us that those thigh-highs are not literally everything.

Seriously Gigi, how many jealousy-inducing boots does one girl really need?
