9 Cool Things About Apple’s iOS 10 Update

Apple iOS10

Competition is fierce in today’s smartphone market. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 looks set to be the current frontrunner in the industry with its awesome features, but for now, Apple’s hitting back with the iOS 10, which they claim is their biggest software release yet.
According to prominent Apple writer John Gruber, the updates are “very practical”, with “common sense” the theme. So okay, things might not be revolutionary in a technological sense, but there are still plenty of cool features to look out for. We pick out our favourites below:
You can remove Apple’s built-in apps
If you find Apple’s built-in apps mundane, you can now remove them with the new iOS10 update. Just touch and hold the app till it jiggles, and tap remove. Voila, the built-in app is gone. Check out the full list of built-in apps you can remove here.
Apple Music is completely revamped

Apple iOS10 Music

Apple music hasn’t had much love since the rise of Spotify, but its interface is completely changed with the iOS10. Design-wise, it looks way cleaner (not to mention, cooler too).
The messages app is now great fun
Texting is no longer just typing sentences into speech bubbles any more, and Apple has recognized that fact by incorporating plenty of cool features in their messages app like new animations, cute stickers, and even “invisible ink”! You can also activate read receipts for certain people in the messages app. So if you want to remain private, it’s going to be even easier to do so now.
Your lockscreen is more useful
From weather updates to siri app suggestions, you can do a whole lot more stuff without unlocking your phone, simply because notifications on the lockscreen become a lot more detailed and interactive with the iOS10.
The photos app is new and improved
Apple Photo App iOS10

By new and improved, we mean crazily good at sorting photos. The improved app is now a super file arranger, and it can now discern between different places, activities, and even faces. There’s even a ‘mini’ search bar to boot!
There’s a spammer alert function
Needless to say, this is THE one function that everyone will appreciate. There’s no doubt about that.
Answering calls from services like Skype or Whatsapp is more convenient
Oh the annoyance when people call you with Whatsapp and you’ve got to manually unlock your phone. The trouble. Now all that will be gone with Apple’s iOS10 update. All you need to do now is slide to answer the call. This works for services like Skype too.
A new Home app allows you to sync with home appliances
Apple Home App iOS10

Say goodbye to manually turning on the lights, or unlocking your front door.
Your iPhone can now remember where you parked
Sometimes, we worry if we’re getting a little too dependent on technology. But hey, at least there’s no forgetting where our car is now.
One thing we do not like
The “Slide to Unlock” function will be gone. It just doesn’t make sense to remove it, even if many people use the TouchID fingerprint sensor, because there’s really no harm in having an additional unlocking option after all.
Public betas are now available. The final version of the iOS10 will arrive with the iPhone 7. Visit Apple’s website at www.apple.com.

This Amazing Face Wash Dispenses Product In Perfect Roses

In this latest edition of “Things We Want Irrationally”, you need to see our latest internet discovery: the Evita Beauty Whip Soap.

Why is this average-looking face wash – albeit with somewhat pretty packaging – going viral? Why, watch the below video and all your questions will be answered:

A video posted by @santsugaru on

Unsurprisingly, it’s the Japanese who have once again figured out a need in our lives that we never knew existed – having our daily face wash dispensed in the form of a perfect rose. It’s really all in a few clever design elements, namely a whorled surface that cuts the product in all the right places, so that upon pushing the two levers at the side to produce this gorgeous end product that we can’t even bear to ruin by applying on our faces.

You might be questioning at this point – what’s the point of a face wash you can’t bear to use? We don’t have a solid response to that, but what we do know is that sometimes in life, you just have an irrational need for certain things, and the Evita Beauty Whip Soap is definitely one of these things. So the next step is: Where can we get this? Unfortunately, only physical stores in Japan will have it, as Evita isn’t a brand that’s stocked here. But as always, Taobao saves the day: a number of enterprising individuals are already selling it for about SGD30 a bottle.

See The Show-Stopping Lipstick Shades From Make Up For Ever

Make Up For Ever helms an artistic collaboration between music and makeup by joining forces with electro-pop duo, Icona Pop, best known for their girl-power anthems such as “I Love It” and “All Night”, to launch lipstick line Artist Rouge which consists of 46 masterful shades – 31 Cream and 15 Matte – that can express all facets of all personalities.
There are two finishes to choose from: matte for an ultra-matte yet velvety finish that won’t feel dry and cream for intense colour with a natural-looking creamy finish.
We randomly tried it on and boy, were we surprised at the results. In terms of colour payoff, what you see is what you get. And this is because the Artist Rouge range utilises the brand’s innovative Show-off Colour technology, that is a specific pigment treatment that brings to light the original purity of colour with its triple-grinding technology and transparent oil that avoids any altering of colour properties.
We love how long-lasting the results are and how super comfortable it is to wear. The synergy of macadamia and mallow oils keeps lips moist and nourished throughout the day, with the Cream range boasting 8-hour wear and Matte range with a notable 10-hour wear thanks to its sunflower seeds and Candelilla structure that helps trap pigments as the volatile oils evaporate, resulting in extended make-up wear.

‘Gossip Girl’ Creators To Work on Marvel’s New TV Show

The Runaways, Marvel's Hulu TV Show

If you’ve been having Gossip Girl withdrawal symptoms for the past four years, then Marvel may just have the perfect remedy for you. The creators of the popular soap drama – Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – will work with Marvel to bring the ‘Runaways’ to Hulu, in a historic first for the video-on-demand service (it’s never had a Marvel TV show before).
Based on the fan-favourite comic book series written by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Runaways is a story about a group of teenagers who discover that their parents are actually part of an evil organization known at “The Pride”. After spying on their parents, they too, figure out that they have powers. In the group, there’s an alien, a telepathic dinosaur and even an eleven year old with super human strength.
But what makes the show’s premise pretty similar to Gossip Girl, is that besides revolving around teens, there are characters who have to put aside their differences and work together in order to achieve a common goal. In both cases, that comes in the form of dealing with parents. These similarities are also probably why Marvel’s top brass decided to employ the help of GG’s co-founders.
“We’ve known the Runaways’ story would make great television,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie – who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience – write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”
While we’re extremely excited for the Runaways’ debut, there’s yet to be an official release date for the television series. We’re just hoping that it won’t be too long before that happens!

Boots To Own This Season

We know Singapore may not be the best place to pull one of our all time favourite kicks out – boots – but nonetheless we couldn’t help but give in to rocking these beauties even on the hottest days. These boots aren’t just made for walking, they’re made for us to #slay in style. Nothing screams ‘confident’ as much as a pair of stellar knee-highs. Here we have the hottest boots of the season that will get everyone’s jaw dropping each time you amble by.
Over-the-knee
These Ariana-made-famous boots are making its way back into our hearts this season. We’ve seen Gigi and Kendall donning these on the streets multiple times, it’s no longer funny. We. Need. At. Least. One. Pair.

L – R: Gianvitto Rossi Suede Boots, $1,875; Stuart Weitzman Highland Stretch Boots , $758; Laurence Dacade Velvet Boots,$1,002.

Velvets
We seem to spot more than a couple of romantic velvet block heels on the runway this fall. What exactly propels these velvets to total shoe stardom? Is it the regal quality they embody, or its close resemblance to its much-crazed-about sister – the furry shoe? Either way, we know it’s a fall must-have when we see celebrities braving the rain in order to pull these high-maintenance puppies off.

Novelty Boots
Nothing can beat a stellar pair of statement boots. We recommend pairing these with solid-coloured cropped pants to really draw attention to these novelty boots. We believe in letting our shoes do the talking, and in this case, you’ll be letting your exuberant alter-ego out to party.

L – R: Laurence Dacade Embroidered Boots, $763; Kat Maconie Daphne Print Boots, $434.75; Anne Sophie Madsen x Farewell Boot, $469.95.

Stocking Boots
These streamlined kicks are a must have if you’re a fan of the long-leg illusion. The term thigh-hugging may come across intimidating, but stocking boots are not as uncomfortable as they appear to be. Invest in a pair of cashmere or suede ones and you’ll be good to go!  We like to call these “gloves for your feet”.

Universal Studios Japan Set to Be Attacked by Death Eaters

Death Eaters, Harry Potter, Universal Studios Japan

Darkness is about to fall at Universal Studios Japan.
As part of this year’s Halloween celebrations, Lord Voldemort’s diabolical Death Eaters will besiege the popular theme park’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter section from 14 September onwards, and over a period of 54 days, you can look forward to catching these dark entities roam the park grounds at night, and even watch them perform their unholy spells of horror!
That being said, there are also plenty of cheery activities for the family in the day, such as trick-or-treating at the park’s Magical Trick or Treat experience, where happy Hogsmeade villagers get to hand out candy to guests.

Universal Studios Japan Halloween

If you want something more substantial than just candy though, there’ll be a special Potter-themed “Hallowe’en Dessert Feast” that features desserts inspired by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, like carrot cake and chocolate ganache. For those of you who want something more savoury, you can check out the “Great Feast”, and stuff yourself silly with goodies like pork ribs and pumpkin au gratin.
But no matter what you choose to do, there’s no denying that paying a visit to Universal Studios Japan this Halloween promises to be plenty of fun, and we can’t honestly can’t wait till it comes round!
The Death Eater Attack is taking place from 14 September to 6 November 2016 at Universal Studios Japan, Osaka. Visit their official website at www.usj.co.jp/e/.

The Powerful Brush Cleaner That's Only $2

Daiso’s a magical place where we can get pretty much anything under the sun, from cutlery, to fake plants, to clothes for your pooch (no, really). Best part of it all, of course, is that everything is $2.
You might have noticed that Daiso has a substantial beauty section as well, one that comes fully stocked with a wide selection of makeup, skincare, body care and beauty tools. While we’re hesitant about putting $2 eyeliner and skin cream on our face, we have found a real gem of a product among Daiso’s beauty selections:

Photo 19-8-16, 08 52 32
Behold, the almighty Daiso Detergent For Puff and Sponge.

We’ve been using this as our go-to brush cleaner for many moons now, and we feel the need to share it with the world, since we haven’t encountered anything that is as powerful, and more crucially, as ridiculously affordable. The name might indicate that it’s to be used on puffs and sponges, but it’s really effective on anything you use to apply makeup: brushes, BeautyBlenders, spoolie brushes, you name it.
To us, its greatest strength is its ability to quickly dissolve makeup product that’s accumulated on your brush or sponge, even if you’ve been lazy and have let product accumulate on your tools for awhile. While the typical spray-on brush cleaners are great for quick cleans, we find that they’re most effective only if you’re super conscientious about cleaning your makeup tools after every single use. If you’re lazy like us and find your foundation brushes positively caked in product after a week or so, only this detergent is going to get it truly clean again.
The product comes in a form of  a clear gel, and what you do is squeeze it right onto your brush/sponge/puff. Use your hands to massage the product in, and it immediately dissolves any makeup residue. Rinse under running water, and enjoy the highly satisfying sight of all the dirty water flowing into the drain, leaving your brush/sponge/puff all nice and clean again – you might realise you’ve forgotten your brush bristles were actually white in colour under all that gunk (we won’t judge). Sure, there’s the need to wait for your brushes to dry before you can use them again, but that’s a small trade off compared to a breakout courtesy of dirty tools.
Photo 19-8-16, 08 47 44 Photo 19-8-16, 08 48 09 Photo 19-8-16, 08 51 57

So the next time you’re in Daiso, we recommend you sweep at least five bottles of these each time. Makeup artists have told us that get 10 or more at one go, so you’ll want to stock up as much as you can before you find yourself disappointed if they’re sold out. After all, this is only $2 a bottle, so doesn’t hurt to be a bit more kiasu, right?

Here’s How You Can Live in Japan, Free-Of-Charge

Move to Japan without having to fork out a single cent? It sounds too good to be true! Like who the hell even gets these kinds of chances?
But crazily enough, this is real, and at the heart of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is Japanese retail company MUJI, who are looking for volunteers to live in a specially designed house in Kamakura, a seaside city that is located just south of Tokyo.

13882567_1050278945040937_1254734007924524459_n-1

Dubbed “The Window House”, the home is fully furnished with all kinds of MUJI fixings, with windows placed in strategic locations to create a balanced sense of light and air. It’s pretty much an experimental concept, and what MUJI wants volunteers to do is to give feedback on the design of the house.
Screen Shot 2016-08-19 at 2.14.44 PM

Successful applicants get to live in the house for two years straight, rent-free. They’ll also receive free MUJI furniture for life! Still, it won’t be all plain sailing, as volunteers have to constantly fill up questionnaires about the experience of living there.
That being said, if you can speak Japanese, and you’re looking for a change of scenery, then by all means volunteer, because MUJI is still accepting applicants. Just don’t expect the hustle and bustle of Tokyo in Kamakura. It is a resort town after all, and its population is a whole lot less dense than Japan’s capital city.
To apply to stay in The Window House, you’ll need a MUJI passport app, which can be downloaded on the App Store or Google Play. Following that, you’ve got to fill up an application form and share the lottery on Facebook or Twitter by 31 August 2016. The winner will be selected in October 2016 and will move in the house by March 2017.
Get the MUJI passport app at www.muji.com/jp/passport. Fill out your application form at muji.net/monitor2016.

The Skincare Line That Busts Stubborn Pores

Stubbornly-clogged pores hardly stand a chance against the Dr.Ci:Labo Labo Labo Super-Keana, a skincare line made for skin in its 20s, which busts “orange peel skin” once and for all. Look ma, no pores!

Oh, all the woes that our pores can bring us. They seem to have an unfortunate tendency to get filled up with gunk, which then manifests as blackheads all thanks to oxidation; clean them out, and then they seem to stay open, i.e. we’re left to live with that dreaded “orange peel skin”.
We’re almost ready to throw our hands up in surrender to eternally enlarged pores, but there might just be a solution – and strangely, the answer lies in something orange. Labo Labo, the sister brand of Japanese cosmeceutical brand Dr. Ci:Labo, has a pretty amazing pore care line called the Super-Keana (“keana” being the Japanese word for “pore”), with products made from natural essential oils of orange. The whole idea of the range is that it tackles all pore-related woes like clogged pores, blackheads and dull skin, using naturally-derived substances like lactic acid, malic acid, royal jelly acid and various plant derivatives to gently clean out stubborn pores and remove layers of dead cells (the main cause of pore buildup), refine enlarged pores, and all without drying out the skin.

labo labo

The Labo Labo Super-Keana range covers an entire skincare regime, starting from an oil cleanser that can remove waterproof makeup, a foam cleanser with brightening properties, a peeling gel that gently clears away dead skin, and a wipe-off lotion that softens the skin while also functioning as a gentle peel. But if your regime is the type that borders on lazy, fear not, for there is the Super-Keana Gel, an “all-in-one” gel moisturiser that happens to also function as a toner, moisturiser, serum, mask and makeup base.
Anyone who has clogged pores will know that comedones can make the skin feel real icky, so the refreshing sensation of the Super-Keana range is definitely a treat. Also rest in the knowledge that the products are made without any artificial fragrances and colouring, alcohol, mineral oils and parabens, and there’s a team of certified Japanese dermatologists behind the formulations, all manufactured in Japan. Pores have given us enough trouble as it is; we’re not messing with products we can’t trust, so the Super-Keana is really the new skincare superhero in our lives.
Labo Labo Super Keana range, $24.90 to $34.90. Available at the Dr. Ci:Labo store, #B3-41 ION Orchard (telephone number 6238-8395) and in selected Watsons stores (Anchorpoint/Bugis Junction/Bukit Panjang Plaza/ Causeway Point/ION Orchard/JEM/Jurong Point/NEX/Ngee Ann City/Parkway Parade/ Tiong Bahru Plaza/Toa Payoh Hub/Westgate/West Mall).

Why You Should Head to The Carvery’s Great Meat Feast Buffet

You can look forward to eating all kinds of meat
That’s right. This buffet is a great way for you to unleash your inner carnivore, even more so if you’re a beef lover. There’s five different beautiful cattle cuts to look forward to at The Carvery, and these include the Cape Grim, Black Angus, Mayura Full-blood Wagyu, Zebu, and Aomori Rice Beef, with the latter only available on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Carvery, Park Hotel Alexandra

If beef isn’t so much your thing, there’s still Rotisserie Chicken, New Zealand Leg of Lamb, and Crispy Pork Knuckle for you to devour on. But one thing’s for certain, there’ll definitely be more meat than you can eat, no matter how hungry you come.
There’s plenty of wine to drink
There’s no really point in eating good meat if you’re not having a glass or two of wine to pair it with, and at The Carvery, you get to choose between six labels of quality wine that are priced at $14 per glass or $68 per bottle.
Those are just the special promos though. If you want a larger selection to choose from, there’s always the 50 labels in The Carvery’s wine and champagne menu to whack.
You get to eat hot buffet dishes, a la minute pasta, and even seafood on ice
It isn’t all about slabs of meat over here. Want smaller-sized portions? You’ve got it. Just head over to the buffet section and grab some casserole, salad or fresh seafood on ice.
Need to get your pasta fix? No worries. There’s a pasta station that dishes out pastas according to your fancy. You can choose between spaghetti, farfalle or linguini and top it off with tomato, aglio olio or carbonara sauce.
Lastly, you get to chill at Aqua Luna, a swanky poolside bar located just outside The Carvery
Aqua Luna, Park Hotel Alexandra

We highly doubt that you’d have space left in your stomach once you’re done with the Great Meat Feast, but if you do, there’s poolside bar Aqua Luna to chill at. It’ll make for a perfect way to end the night, as you can let your food slowly digest over a cocktail or two. Plus, it’s a really cool place to bring a date if you have one. Think about it. You two can eat good food first, and have a nice spot to chill out at later. Perfect!
This buffet is priced at $78 (Sunday-Thursday) and $88 (Friday and Saturday), and will run from 28 September to 22 October 2016. To make a booking at The Carvery, please click here.

We'll Be Having Our Own Kanye West Pablo Pop-Up Store This Weekend

Look what just dropped on Twitter less than 10 hours ago:

That’s right, a map of all the places where Kanye West will be having his pop-up stores, worldwide, all 21 of them, which will be selling merchandise from his latest The Life of Pablo album. And we can’t help to notice one little red dot on the right — ours.
Other than the usual suspects of New York, London, and L.A., it’s downright surprising (and flattering) that we’re the only city in Asia that’s part of this global event.
For a taste of what kind of merch we can expect, Vogue.com reports that each city will have its name spelled out on tees and hoodies, with Cali Thornhill DeWitt’s gothic script printed on them. Kind of like this: the hoodie and denim jacket from the previous Pablo pop-up in March this year at NYC. We expect long queues already.

As for where and when? We don’t know… yet. All we know so far is that the store will run for three days from 19 August (that’s tomorrow!), but its exact location will only be revealed on kanyewest.com 24 hours before it opens. Well, it’s nice that merch is still a thing in the music world, and we’re thankful that the famous musician’s leading the pack on this one.
