Explore Red Makeup With Chanel's Le Rouge Collection No.1

And we mean it quite literally. Lucia Pica, Chanel’s new Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer, debuts a fall makeup collection inspired by the colour red. While we still see the shade take on traditional roles in lipsticks and nail varnishes, Pica translates the powerful hue onto eyes and cheeks as well. It’s an unusual application of the colour, but done beautifully by Pica in the strong visuals she presents with Kristen Stewart as the face of the campaign. Pica describes it best, “in the collection there are ideas of subversion and classicism. It is about the power of femininity, but also vulnerability. Red is intense, vulnerable, sexual and eternal.”
Titled, Le Rouge Collection No1, this range marks the beginning of Pica’s chapter with the brand. There are 17 new products presented in total, each created in an evocative shade of red. You can go classy with an application of deep crimson on the lips; or add a bit of edge with a single swipe of mascara tinted with a hint of burnt red; better yet, be bold and go full red-faced with smokey eyes and flushed cheeks in the striking hue — ultimately, the colours may appear quite subtle on their own, but when put together, offer completely new looks for the season. And these are looks that still very much represent fall, but steer away from the usual autumnal colours that makeup houses typically propose.
And for Pica, the colour red couldn’t be more auspicious. Red has always been part of the heritage of Chanel — as a colour of power in fashion, and as a key shade in beauty. With Le Rouge Collection No1, Pica has taken this colour, and has given it a fresh spin on Chanel makeup, while staying true to the brand’s history and style. It’s an excellent first collection for her, and demonstrates that with every changing face, Chanel is truly the original house of black and white.

Red makeup is loud, bold and provocative, but it can also be simple, cool and classic. Here are three easy looks created using Le Rouge Collection No1.
1. Red Lips
chanel_redlips

Using the Le Crayon Levres in 98 Séduction, draw lines starting from the corners of the cupid’s bow towards the centre of the lips. Tip: Draw a straight line with the lip liner under the bottom lip if you don’t want lips to look too rounded. Fill in the entire lips with the lip liner using downwards strokes for the upper lips, and upwards strokes for the lower lips, to let the colour go on more evenly.
chanel_redlips2

Next, paint over the entire lips with the Rouge Allure in 169 Rouge Tentation, using the Lip Brush No. 33. Apply the lipstick starting from the centre of the lips, for a more even and precise application; go over the outer corners with the lip liner for extra definition. After that, use the Éclat Lumière to clean up the lip lines.

2. Red cheeks
chanel_redcheeks

The Joues Contraste in 320 Rouge Profond is used for the cheeks. Pick up a small amount of powder with the brush, and start at the inside corners of the ears. Sweep the colour softly on the cheeks in a downward arc, not going below the nose.

3. Red eyes
chanel_redeyes

Start by lining the upper lash lines with the Stylo Yeux Waterproof in 929 Agapé. From the centre of the socket lines, draw a semicircle shape. Fill in the entire shape with the eyeliner.
Apply colours B and D from the Les 4 Ombres in 268 Candeur Et Experiénce palette, going over the eyelids to create a caramel base. Use colour C to go over the entire eyelids; press the eyeshadow into the skin before blending for better colour payoff, and to help the colour set nicely.
chanel_redeyes2

Rim the waterlines with the Stylo Yeux Waterproof in 928 Eros, starting from the outer corners. Go over the waterlines with colour D from the Les 4 Ombres in 268 Candeur Et Experiénce for a more intense smokey look. As a final step, sweep the Dimensions Mascara in 40 Subversif on the upper and lower lashes.

Why Brown Is The Lip Colour Trend You Should Embrace

It was in late 2015 that the first signs of this particular 90s comeback emerged, in the form of brown lips reappearing everywhere from the runway shows, to all over our Instagram feeds. We thought this was a beauty trend that belonged firmly in the 90s, something destined to never make a return – just like tattoo chokers and flared jeans. Then again, those last two fashion trends have already shown that it’s possible to come back from the dead, so when brown started becoming more and more of an on-trend lip colour of late, we decided to just fully embrace the 90s nostalgia.
Still, it can be a tricky colour to wear, one that demands an understanding of your skin undertones and natural lip colour, as well as how certain types of brown work better on you than others. Pick the right shade, and it can become a delightfully nostalgic look, or a modern and edgy interpretation of the colour. We guide you through some of the best browns available out there now, and how you can work the colour without looking old-fashioned.
Metallic brown

urban decay

$29, available at Urban Decay stores and Sephora

A shade that comes closest to how brown lips were like in the 90s – in a metallic finish, with bronzey tones. Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in Conspiracy is a plum-bronze shimmer that comes in the Metallized finish, and a shade like this would complement warmer skin tones best. Don’t look too much like you time travelled from the 90s by keeping the rest of your makeup simple – just a light neutral hue on the eyes, for example; no dark eyeshadow, please.

Glossy mauve brown
nyx

$13, available at Sephora

This is the easiest way to edge into the brown lipstick trend, since NYX’s Plush Gel Lipstick in Breakup has a formula goes on in a sheer, semi-glossy finish that’s easily buildable. So if you’re afraid of going full-on brown, just dab the colour onto the centre of your lips, and blend outwards to create a stain; if you decide to slick on more, this shade is a lovely warm mauve-y light brown that fairer skin tones can pull off nicely.

Matte pinkish brown
kylie cosmetics

US$17, available on kyliecosmetics.com

Ah, Kylie Jenner’s famous Dolce K. Call this the shade that launched a thousand dupes, because this pinkish-brown in a bold matte finish is the perfect Instagram nude – fill in your lips with it for the quickest way to come close achieving Kylie’s infamous pout (with no lip fillers involved, that is). This kind of brown is undeniably flattering, but we think it looks the best on more olive skin tones, where the pink shows better.

Shimmery chocolate brown
kat von d

A photo posted by Marcela Ann (@marcela_ann) on

$32, available at Sephora

Such a dark colour takes guts to wear, we admit. It goes on a deep brown, with flecks of violet sparkle that makes this shade extra attention-grabbing.  On darker skin the red undertones are more obvious, while on fairer skin it appears more blackened. Whatever it is, this colour is definitely a conversation-starter when worn – just remember to keep the rest of your makeup relatively simple.

Matte chocolate brown
colourpop

A photo posted by Deisy Hernandez (@deissy_h) on

US$6, available on colourpop.com

A lighter take on a chocolate hue as compared to the Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Piaf, Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Lip in Limbo also has much stronger reddish hues. It works for most skin tones, but yellow undertones bring out the red tones in the lip colour more. The ultra matte finish is rather high maintenance, though.

Red-brown creme
charlotte tilbury

US$26, available on net-a-porter.com

With a name like “Birkin Brown”, you know this colour will look super luxe. Charlotte Tilbury has created what she calls a “timelessly elegant soft chocolate cream” for her Matte Revolution lipstick range, inspired by Jane Birkin (not the bags). The red tones are very strong in this one, such that we’d almost consider it a red. On fair skin, it’s especially striking.

Spotlight: Fall/Winter 2016 Accessories

straight off the whirlwind madness of the fall/winter runways, we present to you the stuff you might actually buy – a treasure trove of bags, shoes and accessories in three of the season’s most exciting trends that ha ve got us downright obsessed. trust us, you’ll fall right under their spell too after we’re done.
CASTLE IN THE CLOUD
There’s no better time to indulge in some childhood delight – why, when we’re fully-grown adults, of course. We like a little imagination in our pieces, and this season’s fantastical picks go bold, in exaggerated shapes and materials that add a touch of whimsy to muted outfits.

  • Featured: Dolce & Gabanna Castle Bag, Miu Miu Fur Slides, Minna Parikka bunny-eared sneakers, glittery Charlotte Olympia heels, Tommy Hilfiger braided jewellery
  • Trend: Subtle fairytale-inspired pieces — Carrie K. jewellery, keyhole earrings and time gear lariat, that reference Alice in Wonderland

BLING IT ON
You can argue that glitter, sparkling sequins and embellishments never truly leave the runway, and you’re probably right, especially since accessories and handbags are the easiest ways to incorporate these into a look, but hey, they take on new forms every season. Perhaps to accompany the 80s revival of power shoulders and mini skirts, a perfect counter to the minimalist ease of the 90s just one season earlier, shiny surfaces seem the perfect accompaniment to bold, daring glam. Bring on compact box clutches ladened with rhinestones and sequins.

  • Featured: Roger Vivier Sneaky Viv’ Crystallised Sneakers, Alexander McQueen embellished bucket bag, Saint Laurent embellished college sling bag, Gucci embellished shades
  • Trend: Bag straps — Fendi’s Strap You line; Prada Galleria + Saffiano Crystal Flower Shoulder Strap

THE GOLDEN RATIO
Ever since we knew about the Golden Ratio, we’ve been fascinated by how this magical calculation of proportions, okay fine, pure math actually, can become a defining standard of perfect beauty. It’s all over paintings, buildings, and other visual arts – and now, geometry is just as important for this season’s accessories too. In contrast to the wildly embellished pieces, we sometimes like our jewellery sleek and simple.

  • Featured: Gucci Gold Quilt Bag, Nicholas Kirkwood boots with pearl heel, 3.1 Phillip Lim heels, Mansur Gavriel peach handbag
  • Trend: Art Deco with clean lines — Mulberry’s new line of contemporary jewellery

Feature: 5 Makeup Removers in 5 Days

Frankly, I never knew it was possible to own more than one makeup remover-slash-cleanser at one time. After all, they’re probably the least “fun” in the world of makeup – and don’t they all do the same thing? But then it doesn’t take a full-fledged beauty guru to tell you that no two makeup removers were created equal, and that getting formulas right, and knowing what makes your skin tick, is some pretty tricky business. In fact, the magic of a killer makeup-removing liquid can essentially come down to science – or fancy technology, even. So here’s us dipping our toes in the waters of makeup science; as we wiped off the layers and fully embraced going from heroes to zeroes – in the best way possible.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 Can Be Unlocked with Your Eyes

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Iris Scanner

Finally, a tech device that allows us to feel like James Bond (drinking Martinis every weekend at the bar hurts the wallet and liver way too much). For this, we’ve got to thank Samsung, who’ve just released the Galaxy Note 7, a phablet that incorporates iris-scanning technology, and the latest in line of their popular Note series.
So, how does unlocking a phone with your eyes work? First, users have to access the iris option in security settings, before selecting the scanner as the preferred unlock method. After that, it’s a matter of following simple instructions, and voila, staring at your phone screen will now unlock it too. Definitely an upgrade over unlocking it with your thumbprint. If for some reason your iris scanner isn’t working, there’s still the standard pin or pattern options to fall back on.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Iris Scanner

But the iris scanner isn’t the only neat addition that the Note 7 has over its predecessors. For the ultra-private, the Note 7 has what is called a Secure Folder. Basically, what this means is that users can now store files privately, as well as run the same app twice on a single device, with each app tied to different SIMs. Think Whatsapp, but two versions of it. It’s now going to be a lot easier to keep photos, videos and texts secret, especially since only Samsung ID-registered customers can access the folder.
Other cool improvements of the Note 7 include the smaller size of its stylus, which now measures a tiny 0.7mm compared to the Note 5’s 1.6mm. Another handy feature of the Note 7 is the option to select your resolution. For instance, phone users can now pick between HD, Full-HD or QHD for the 5.7-inch display, with lower resolutions a battery saver.
Galaxy Note 7 Stylus

People who love to take photos will also be pleased to know that the Note 7’s camera is extremely powerful. It uses a 12-megapixel sensor with Dual Pixel technology, while there’s also phase detection autofocus (PDAF), optical image stabilisation (OIS), an f/1.7 aperture, a dual-LED flash, and auto-HDR.
It may be early days, but Samsung’s Note 7 looks like it might just leave other smartphones in the dust. Will brands like Apple, HTC or Xiaomi step up their game and come up with something equally as impressive, or will the Note 7 propel Samsung as the clear frontrunner in the smartphone industry? Only time can tell, but for now, the Note 7 looks like the real deal.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 comes in Onyx Black, Gold Platinum and Titanium Silver and is available in Singapore from 20 August onwards for $1,168. Visit Samsung’s official website at www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/

The Snazziest Gadgets To Kit Out Your Kitchen With

You’d think there isn’t all that much to something as necessary as kitchen appliances – but then you probably haven’t had a browse through the epic kitchenware of this century recently. In our epoch of frenzied tech gadget updates, it only makes sense that their counterparts in the kitchen get their own smart, sleek makeovers. These days, it’s all about the thrill of running your hand over polished stainless steel, or timing your shiny new air fryer to whip up its next Michelin meal. If it isn’t quick, convenient, and completely idiot-proof – it might as well take itself straight off the market. And really, you’d be surprised; at the rate these kitchen gadgets are advancing, even the average undomesticated joe will soon be into them.

Mayer Air Fryer MMAF10-BK

mayer

How does one talk about must-have handy kitchen appliances without including an air fryer? The bad boys have been sweeping the nation, with their promises of tasty, healthier food in minimising oil use and energy wastage. Air fryers cook pretty much everything from potatoes and chips to meat, to frozen refreshments you’d typically deep fry in oil – appetising, but not the most health conscious. If you’re new to the air frying life and would rather not splash out straightaway, try the sleek black one from Mayer, which currently retails for less than $100. The MMAF10-BK comes in a solid 32 x 32 x 26cm frame, with a sturdy frying basket, grill, and fryer to dump your ingredients in and have the work done for you. Powered at 1400W, features include a 30-minute timer, 200degree temperature control, and powered cooking using up to 80% less oil.
An automatic closing function helps to close the machine once the timer is up, so you can pull the frying-pan out cleanly; redundant oil from the food ingredients will be collected at the bottom of it. We’re pretty con dent that the air fryer industry has already somewhat revolutionised cooking, in reducing waiting time, energy consumption, and general hassle in frying. All the increased convenience
(and less attention to the culinary arts) might not be Gordon Ramsay’s cup of tea, but it’s pretty hard to hate technology making our lives easier.

Philips Avance Collection Noodle Maker
philips 1       philips 2

You already know Philips for their stellar (and pricey) air fryers; but you might want to check out the electronics giant for their nifty pasta/noodle makers too. The Avance Collection Noodle Maker is 500g of pure kick – particularly if you’re someone who likes a homey touch. The machine makes about 250g of pasta in just ten minutes, exerting 1600 lb force on the dough during extrusion, to produce smooth, perfectly textured pasta. And don’t be fooled; despite the DIY component of the machine, advanced engineering makes making your own pasta so much easier than it sounds – with automatic mixing, kneading and extruding. The only part you play is choosing what ingredients and types of our you want to add into your mix; after selecting the program and starting the machine, it automatically mixes and kneads the dough for you, before extruding the dough in whatever shape you want. Four unique shaping discs – in Spaghetti, Penne, Fettuccini and Lasagna – add some excitement to your noodle making adventures. A storage drawer at the bottom of the maker stores the shaping discs and cleaning tools, keeping everything compact and neat.

Tefal TT550015 Toast N’ Egg Toaster
tefal

Brace yourself for the egg puns – because they’re coming. You know what they say; breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which is why you should definitely be starting your morning sunny side up. And in all honesty, UK brand Tefal’s Toast N’ Egg is more convenience than gimmick. For the time-pressed go-getter, it revolutionises breakfast time in combining a bread toaster and egg cooker into one. Sure you can use them separately, but when you can get a more balanced meal in less than four minutes, why fight it?
The all-in-one toaster is definitely versatile – powered at 1,200W, the toasting slots are wide enough to fit bread, muffins, or bagels; and even features a warming tray for heating pre-cooked meats. Just like a regular toaster, there are variable toasting settings you can adjust for your preferred browning results – improved only by automatic bread centering for uniform toasting (yes, that’s a thing). A handy slide-out crumb tray makes cleaning up after quick and easy too. And over in the egg unit, a steamer tray holds up to four eggs at a time for hard-boiling, plus a poaching tray for a more, ahem, eggs-travagant meal. If that doesn’t sound like an egg-cellent breakfast, we don’t know what does.
So put your days of skipping breakfast behind you; with such multi-tasking convenience at your fingertips, there really are no more eggs-cuses.

Nespresso Prodigio
nespresso

A smartphone-connected coffee machine? You had to see this coming. Nespresso’s first ever smart coffeemaker lets you prepare your coffee, receive alerts when you’re low on coffee capsules, and even stay notified when it’s time to descale (ie. clean out) your machine – all from the ease of your mobile phone. It’s essentially the contraption every lazy coffee lover has been waiting for; simply download the Nespresso mobile app and you’ll be able to control everything from timed automatic brewing to tackling maintenance alerts, via Bluetooth Smart technology syncing to your Prodigio.
Call it frivolous, but imagine the daily convenience automatic brewing and turn-off will quickly bring to your religious morning cuppa. You can even order capsules straight from the app, before instructing your machine to prepare any of the range of 23 Nespresso Grands Crus for your caffeine fix. And for those who still value aesthetic over functionality, you’ll be pleased to know the Prodigio machine comes in two elegant colourways – sleek Silver, or smooth, polished Titan (all-black badassery to truly pimp your countertop). Multiple settings allow you to choose your preferred coffee type and size, be it Ristretto (25ml), Espresso (40ml), or Lungo (110ml). A second Prodigio & Milk machine also comes in the same minimalist colourways, along with an adjoined Aeroccino3 milk frother to get the best out of milk coffee recipes. We’ll admit – it’s scary how even something as intimate as coffee has integrated so seamlessly into smart technology; but progress can only be a good thing. Let’s just hope all this great convenience won’t make us forget how to brew a good homemade cuppa one day.

Instead, kit out your kitchen with a cute and quirky mini donut maker – fun, easy to use, and just as successful in yielding tasty results. We’re veering away from the typical sophisticated steel fixtures, and honing in on the bright and cheery packaging of Babycakes, an American brand specialising in, well, cute kitchen appliances sure to tickle any child’s fancy. The DN-95 makes six cake-style donuts at a time, maintaining even, thorough baking throughout each donut in just one minute and 30 seconds. With a no-stick pan, removing the finished donuts from the unit is clean and efficient – so you can quickly pop in the batter for your next batch.

Smarter iKettle 2.0
smarter

The level of sheer laziness that inspired this creation probably tops the Nespresso Prodigio; but you have to admit, following the trend of smart appliances aside, a smartphone-controlled water kettle is pretty genius. Especially when you consider the words of British technology company Smarter’s CEO Christian Lane, who compared the invention of the TV remote to the iKettle – the first WiFi kettle in the world: “Now you can’t imagine buying a TV without a remote, there would be an uproar! The iKettle is exactly the same.” We fold.
The iKettle 2.0 is the 2013 first version’s sleeker, new and improved stunner. It’s a classic kettle design, but reconstructed using high-grade stainless steel with an extra strong handle and lid – and comes with new smart features too. Through the accompanying Smarter mobile app, you can set the kettle to boil at any temperature from 20–100deg Celsius, and any time you want, which is pretty handy if you’re a tea connoisseur who’s prickly about water temperatures for brewing certain teas. Various modes help you time when to start the kettle boiling, and a Keep Warmer function works like your very own kettle ‘Snooze’ alarm, by keeping the boiled water hot for up to 30 minutes. The app even alerts you to when your kettle is low on water, with a real-time in-app water level window. The new-age kettle has wireless connectivity of 802.11b/g/n, and works on Android and iOS, but requires a 2.4ghz router to bring voltage to 220-240V for outside the UK. Still, it could soon be well worth the adaptor to have in your home.
Smarter iKettle 2.0, £99.99, available online at smarter.am.

Sengkang’s Vending Machine Café is Incredibly Popular, but is it Worth the Wait?

Chef in Box, Sengkang Vending Machine Café

Branding itself as a convenient meal stop for residents, Chef in Box is Singapore’s first vending machine café, and the latest food craze to hit Sengkang. The 24-hour, cashier-less café is located at Block 320C Anchorvale Drive, with lengthy queues formed from morning to night. So what’s all the fuss about?

Chef in Box, Sengkang Vending Machine

Waiting time was about an hour plus

Well, like food dispensing machines in Japan, there’s no chef or kitchen involved, and food is pre-cooked. Customers get to pick from a selection of 19 bento-style dishes, which come in either hot or cold boxes, and heating your food with the built-in microwave takes three minutes. Customers also have the option of bringing home a chilled box of food.
As for the menu, meals are divided into varieties of local and Western cuisine, with dishes like Nasi Briyani with Mutton Rendang ($5), Chicken Curry with Rice ($4), Seafood Hor Fun ($4), Chicken Bolognese Spaghetti ($4), and Grilled Salmon with Spaghetti in Tomato Concasse ($5). All the food is halal-certified.
Chef in Box, Sengkang Vending Machine

Many people were uncertain of how to use the machines, adding to the long queues

To see if the hype was worth it, we took a trip down to the place ourselves. When we arrived at 3.15pm, it was apparent that the sweltering heat didn’t bother the crowd one bit. The mid-afternoon crowd comprised mostly of school students and curious residents. Still, we were surprised at the amount of people present. After all, it wasn’t even peak period for lunch or dinner.
After one and a half hours of queuing, we got ourselves a box of chicken curry with rice and seafood hor fun (purchases were limited to two boxes per person due to the overwhelming crowd). Taste-wise, the chicken curry was hardly satisfying. The strong spices usually associated with curry were almost non-existent, and the rice was slightly mushy.
Chef in Box, Sengkang Vending Machine

This is what the bento boxes look like

Thankfully, the seafood hor fun fared way better – it retained a decent wok hei flavour. But we weren’t convinced that it was actually worth waiting so long for. Other food we tried included the Tuna & Corn Wrap ($3.90) and Thai Chicken Sandwich ($3.80) from the snack section, which dispenses food items like sandwiches and canned drinks.

Chicken Curry with Rice

Chef in Box, Sengkang Vending Machine

Seafood Hor Fun

The wrap was underwhelming, and we could barely taste the tuna, which came off as extremely bland. However, the Thai chicken sandwich was flavourful, and packed a nice, sweet punch. That being said, the star attractions were the bento box dispensing machines, and queues were short at the snack station when we were there.
Chef in Box, Sengkang Vending Machine

Snack section

Overall, Chef in Box is a fantastic idea, one that could potentially help a lot of people, especially folks who are pressed for time. But is worth joining the long lines at the moment? No, not in our books. Until the novelty of buying food from vending machines at a void deck wears off, and the crowds dwindle, we can’t say that Chef in Box is the convenient meal stop it claims to be. It might just be in the future though.

What Gamers Can Expect from Sony’s Playstation VR

sony_playstation_vr_headset

Scheduled to release in Singapore on 13 October, Sony’s highly anticipated Playstation VR has plenty of features that gamers are interested in, and for good reason.
First of all, the simulated immersive environment created by the VR headset stretches up to 5-metres, creating a fantastical ‘reality’ that makes you forget you’re actually playing a video game.
The fact that the headset weighs just 610g adds to the illusion of being in another ‘dimension’. You just don’t feel that there’s anything on your head!
The virtual reality headset will also enable gamers to play more than 60 VR games, including the highly anticipated Batman Arkham, and other cool titles like Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Robinson: The Journey, and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. If you want to support Asian game developers, you can check out Mortal Blitz VR by SKONEC Entertainment Co., Ltd (Korea), O! My Genesis by XPEC ENTERTAINMENT INC. (Taiwan), and Stifled by Gattai Games (Singapore).
So what device do you require in order to make full use of your virtual reality gaming experience? Well, it goes without saying that owning a PS4 is a must, but you can’t do without Playstation Move controllers either. Without these controllers, you won’t be able to enjoy the Playstation VR’s max capabilities.
If you don’t have Playstation Move controllers, the Playstation VR also allows you to enjoy regular games in cinematic mode, though we strongly encourage you to buy these controllers if you’re thinking of getting the headset. If not, you might just be wasting your hard-earned cash.
Besides VR gaming, you can also enjoy streamed content from Netflix and Hulu in cinematic mode, as well as a range of videos and images in 360° views.
Here’s the full list of Playstation VR Games:

  • 100ft Robot Golf
  • Ace Banana
  • Allumette
  • Arizona Sunshine
  • BATMAN: ARKHAM VR
  • Battlezone
  • BOUND: Shattered Kingdom
