Timex’s Camper MK1 Is Old-School Cool, Military-Style

Timex Camper MK1 30th Edition

Timex is rolling back the years with the release of their limited edition Camper MK1 series – a contemporary revamp of the military watch issued to Americans soldiers fighting the Vietnam War.
Made for the modern man, this re-mastered collection shares the exact same features as the original 1982 designs. It’s extremely sturdy, and can withstand even the harshest of conditions. If you think about it, the watch was made for lasting in war after all, so no surprise there.

Timex Camper MK1

Durability aside, gents will be pleased to know that this remake is also really stylish, in a rugged, old-school military way of course. The colour scheme is olive green, and the watch itself comprises of a 12/24-hour dial, a 36mm case, as well as an INDIGO lume. It even provides up to 50 metres of water resistance!

8 Movies We’re Excited to Catch This August 2016

Whether you love action or horror flicks, there’s something for every movie lover this August. Here’s our pick of the lot.
Nerve
Release Date: 11 August 2016
Director: Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost
Cast: Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Juliette Lewis
Rating: PG13
If Pokemon Go is a good indicator of just how crazy society can get over a mobile phone game, then well, Nerve showcases that obsession in a disturbing manner. Based on the bestselling novel by Jeanne Ryan, and starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco, this techno-thriller is about an online game of truth or dare, where players get to choose between being a watcher or a player. Watchers get to observe players and think up dares for them, while players receive cash after completing each dare. Things start off pretty innocuously, i.e. kissing strangers, heading to the city, till dares becoming increasingly risky, and even potentially life threatening for players.

The BFG
Release Date: 18 August 2016
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Bill Hader, Rebecca Hall, Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill
Rating: PG
Any child who grew up reading Roald Dahl would tell you that The BFG was one of their favourite books of all time. The late British novelist was a master at tugging people’s heartstrings, and Steven Spielberg’s movie adaptation of the popular book promises to be no different. As per the book, the premise starts off with a poor orphaned girl being “captured” by a giant from her orphanage home in a world where there’s vicious, children-eating giants. Thankfully, the captor is really just a big, friendly veggie-loving dude, and the unlikely pair embarks on a journey that is both funny and heartwarming.
Lights Out
Release Date: 18 August 2016
Director: David F. Sandberg
Cast: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Maria Bello
Rating: PG
Having post-horror movie cravings after watching The Conjuring? Well, that’s motivation enough to catch Lights Out, a movie directed by David F. Sandberg, and produced by horror specialist James Wan (also director of The Conjuring). The story explores a woman’s mysterious (and very creepy) relationship with a poltergeist, which only happens to appear when the lights are turned off. However, getting rid of the supernatural spirit proves far from easy, and a frightening finale is ensured when everyone finds out that the only solution is also the most devastating one.
Ben-Hur
Release Date: 18 August 2016
Director: Timur Bekmambetov
Cast: Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman, Rodrigo Santoro
Rating: PG
Think The Fast and the Furious, but medieval-style, and you’d have a pretty good idea of what Ben-Hur’s all about. In this biblical action movie epic, Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), is wrongfully accused of an assassination attempt by his adoptive brother Messala (Toby Kebbell). The result? He suffers years of slavery under the Romans, before getting a chance to get one back at his brother via a grand chariot race, which by the way, was shot with as little CGI as possible. Talk about bringing reality to the big screen! Morgan Freeman plays the wealthy Sheik Ilderim, while Rodrigo Santoro completes the set-up with his role as Jesus Christ.
Indignation
Release Date: 18 August 2016
Director: James Schamus
Cast: Logan Lerman, Sarah Gadon, Tracey Letts, Linda Emond
Rating: NC16
Indignation tells the tale of Marcus Mesman (Logan Lerman), a working-class Jewish student who struggles with sexual repression and cultural frustration in 1950’s America, a period of time where society was extremely prudish, and anti-Semitism was worryingly prevalent. Basically, life couldn’t get anymore dreary for poor Marcus. He lives his life like a fish helplessly out of water. That is, till he meets Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gadon), a beautiful blonde girl who is both sexually explicit and suicidal at the same time. A romance then blossoms between them, changing their lives in the process.
Infiltrator
Release Date: 25 August 2016
Director: Brad Furman
Cast: Bryan Cranston, John Leguizamo, Diane Kruger
Rating: M18
Fans of Breaking Bad are going to love this one. Infiltrator stars Bryan Cranston as Robert Mazur, a federal agent whose task is to infiltrate the nefarious trafficking network of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. His cover? An alias by the name of “Bob Musella”, a businessman who helps the cartel launder their millions of dollars. Based on the trailer, the film looks promising, but it remains to be seen if Cranston can do better, or even match up to his Breaking Bad series. If anyone can do it though, there’s no doubting it’s going to be Cranston.
Don’t Breathe
Release Date: 25 August 2016
Director: Federico Alvarez
Cast: Stephen Lang, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto
Rating: PG
Don’t Breathe is a film about three amateur robbers who break into wealthy people’s homes to steal items for cash. After a few successes, they prepare for what they believe is their easiest heist yet – breaking into an old, blind man’s home and making off with all his dough. Thing is, the old man isn’t as helpless as he sounds, and the three friends soon find themselves trapped, and in a desperate fight to save their own skin.
Hands of Stone
Release Date: 25 August 2016
Director:Jonathan Jukubowicz
Cast: Édgar Ramírez, Robert De Niro, Usher
Rating: PG
There are few things in the world that are more dramatic than making sporting history. These moments are written in folklore, etched in the memories of those who witnessed them, with stories passed down from generation to generation. Famous Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran’s illustrious career had many such moments, with Jonathan Jukubowicz’s Hands of Stone focusing on the most controversial one of them all, a rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard that changed the course of boxing history forever.

This Laneige x Lucky Chouette Collection Is Owl You Need

This might just be the cutest makeup collection we’ll see all year. LANEIGE has unveiled its third LANEIGE Meets Fashion collaborative collection, an annual affair when the brand partners up with a Korean fashion line to produce a limited edition, specially-packaged makeup range that bears the identity of both brands, and is always made up of absolute collector’s items. So LANEIGE x Lucky Chouette is the third of these collections, and the fashion brand in question this time is all about colourful street style with a laidback yet feminine vibe; and since “chouette” is actually the French word for owls, of course the mascots are a pair of very cute owls designed especially for this collection, named Bella Chouette and Vely Chouette.
Bella and Vely cover the packaging of the Serum Drop Tint (yup, that’s a new product), BB Cushion and the Multi-Colour Face Palette (also new), and this entire collection is just too freaking adorable, and a must-get if you’re into owls.

bb cushions

The Serum Drop Tint is an all-new lip colour format that’s an oil-serum formula, which leaves a glossy finish with high colour payoff. It’s available in 10 shades, and the good news is that even when the Lucky Chouette collection is off the shelves, the Serum Drop Tint will continue to be a permanent part of the LANEIGE lip colour range.

(Clockwise from top left: Serum Drop Tint in No. 3 Cheeky Cherry, No. 7 Coral Breath, No. 10 Bite Me, and No. 9 Misty Rose)

And then, there’s the Multi-Colour Face Palette that you can use as kind of a highlighter for your eyes, if you want just a light sheen of colour on your lids to let your lips take the spotlight. The owl design on the powder makes us want to keep it as pristine as possible, though – we wouldn’t want the brush ruining that cute chouette – but then, the colours are just too pretty to just look at and not use.

Owl is it possible to resist all this?

LANEIGE x Lucky Chouette Collection, pre-launching at the Takashimaya B1 Talking Hall from 24 to 30 Aug, and available at LANEIGE boutiques and counters from 1 Sep. laneige.com.sg

Ways To Cheat The Weather This Season

When it comes to seasons , the closest thing we’ve got to fall here in the Lion City is the monsoon season. We’ve seen the runways, and spent hours ogling at voluminous knits and coats. Yet, we can already predict the impending sensation of a heat stroke if we give in to these snug cover-ups. Believe us, we know the pain of having to dress in last season’s forgotten looks through the whole year. And we believe we’ve finally cracked the code as to how to stay in style this fall without giving in to the weather.
Capelets

image1xxl Screen Shot 2016-08-05 at 5.20.44 PM  00219704-02 (1)

L – R : Asos Tiered Frill Cape, $54.30; Kleeaisons Hi-Lo Cape Jacket, $59.90; Forever21 Tigermist Cape Blazer, POA.

If you’re one of those who’ve sworn off wearing an outerwear, you might want to give it a second thought. Capelets are the perfect alternative to chunky coats. We’ve found that with this cropped kimono silhouette, sophistication and comfort can go hand in hand.
Velvet

5580279500_2_3_1 image1xxl (1) maison-velvet-and-lace-camisole---purple

L – R: Zara Velvet Dress, $49.90; Asos Velvet Slouch Wide Leg Trousers, $76; Pomelo Maison Velvet and Lace Camisole, $44.

We’ve seen velvet make a comeback to the fashion scene so many times, we’ve lost count. We can only conclude that designers just can’t get enough of this timeless, luxurious material. This season, velvet makes a grand entrance in eye-striking colours along the likes of maroon, pink and midnight blue. Keep things breezy with a velvet slip dress, or pull off your favourite button-up with glamorous velvet trousers and see where the touch of luxe takes you.

Extra long sleeves
image1xxl (2) il_570xN.1024001393_5t3o 61912.0.detail

L – R : Asos Love Crop Top With Long Fluted Sleeves, $39.10; Etsy Long Fringe Cover Up, $358.30; Nastygal Kimono Possible Cape Top, $56.

Now here’s where things get a little tricky. We all want to “go big or go home’ with billowing sleeves like Kanye and Rihanna without it being impractical under the scorching sun. Look for these exaggerated sleeves on cropped tops or loose knitwear to cheat the system the next time you find yourself caught in between style and comfort.
Sleeveless turtlenecks

cn10974814 00162282-03 image1xxl

L – R : GAP Sleeveless Ribbed Turtleneck, $22.99; Forever21 Turtleneck Sweater Dress, POA; Asos Sleeveless Top With Turtle Neck In Directional Rib, $20.65.

Turtlenecks are big this season, as with any other year. We have to admit, it can always get a little stuffy under these neck-hugging essentials, but going sleeveless aways helps us retain our sunny disposition against this even-sunnier habitat we call home.
Pinafores

63055664_56  aniya-grommet-midi-jumper---navy image1xxl

L – R : Zara Pinafore Dress With T-Shirt, $34.90; Pomelo Aniya Grommet Midi Jumper, $44; Asos Boohoo Embroidered Faux Suede Pinafore Dress , $54.30.

We love re-visiting our school-girl days with this classic embodiment of sweet-natured femininity. Sure, the idea of layering up can seem intimidating. But we can never go wrong pairing a pinafore with a lightweight button-up to achieve that slouchy chic look. Now that’s effortless styling at its best.

A Map Of All The Pokéstops and Gyms in Singapore, Plus A Handy Guide To How Rare Your Pokémon Is

Everyone’s on Pokémon Go, seriously. Okay not literally everyone, but since Saturday morning when this long-awaited augmented reality game finally launched in Singapore, we’ve seen an unprecedented number people gather in our neighbourhood parks and playgrounds, and every other person we walk past on the streets has their head bowed, eyes trained on the game lighting up their phone screens.
It’s official: there has never been a game that has united people for a common cause – to be the very best, like no one ever was – to such an extent. One of the main reasons is that Pokémon was one of the defining games of the 90s, so for all the 90s kids out there, Pokémon Go is a nice dose of nostalgia packaged in a sleek technologically-updated package, a way to bring the game from our beloved Nintendos to our smartphones.
But we won’t assume everyone’s a Pokémon expert here. We recognise that there are people getting in on the game without a full understanding of exactly what sets an Aerodactyl apart from a Zubat, and what exactly is the difference between a Pokémon Gym and a Pokéstop. So here are a couple of handy tools we found to help you figure it all out:

How rare is the Pokémon you just caught?

pokemon rarity chart
(Image: Reddit)

Behold, this gem of a chart created by Reddit user RotomGuy, which sorts all the Pokémon into how rare they are in the game. All 151 Pokémon are represented here (one per evolutionary line is shown only, so for example Bulbasaur in this chart also represents Ivysaur and Venusaur).
In general, the rule of the game is the higher the level you’re at, the more easily you’ll catch rarer Pokémon – but there are exceptions should you be at the right place at right time, like how we caught a Tangela, considered “Rare”, when we were all of Level 2.

Speaking of the right place and right time… so where do you go to find Pokémon?
We found this highly handy map:
pokemon go map

Say hello to PokemonGoMap.info, your best friend for seeking out the nearest Pokémon Gyms and PokéStops around you.
To sum up, PokéStops (the blue squares) are locations where you can stock up on game essentials such as Pokéballs to catch Pokémon with, potions to heal your Pokémon during battle, eggs to hatch into more Pokémon and incense that you can drop to attract more Pokémon to a certain location.
And then, there are the Gyms (red squares). Once you reach level 5 in the game, you’ll be able to join one of the three teams (Instinct, Mystic or Valor) and battle other trainers within each Gym. If the Gym you’ve selected is currently claimed by an opposing team, to claim it for your own team, you’ll need to battle the trainers there and lower a vital stat of theirs called the “prestige level” – when this hits zero, you’ll be able to claim the gym for your own team. To claim it, you’ll need to leave one of your Pokémon there, preferably the strongest one, which other trainers will then have to take on if they’d like to claim the gym for themselves.
Some general tips for Pokémon catching: Hang out near bodies of water to catch Water-type Pokémon, and go roaming after sunset to catch Ghost-type ones. As you might have already heard, some of the biggest hotspots around Singapore include the parks, shopping malls (especially ION Orchard, which has done a really clever job of luring Pokémon trainers), Changi Airport, and many of the residential estates in the heartlands.
As for the NYLON Singapore team, it’s unfortunately not looking too exciting where we are:
tpy map

The only gym in our vicinity is the iconic dragon playground about a 10-minute walk away; looks like we’re skipping lunch today to hang out there instead.

Most Riveting Stories Behind Couture Collections This FW16

We had our eyes peeled when the Fall Couture season came around this year. As usual, we were blown away by the stunning displays of craft and savour faire by all the designers. Who can forget Fendi’s jaw-droppingly enchanting showcase by the Trevi Fountain? We certainly can’t. Putting all visuals aside, we’d like to talk about the collections with the most compelling inspirations behind them. Let’s start from the King of Fashion, shall we?
Fendi – Karl Lagerfeld

Fendi Fashion show, Couture collection Fall Winter 2016 in Rome Fendi Fashion show, Couture collection Fall Winter 2016 in Rome Fendi Fashion show, Couture collection Fall Winter 2016 in Rome

Karl Lagerfeld made it so spellbindingly easy to be captivated by one of the most majestic set venues ever, that we almost got distracted from the main spirit of the collection. And how can we? Considering the magic and beauty behind his thought process. The show’s title, “Legend and Fairy Tales” speaks for itself as Lagerfeld drew his inspiration from a book of Norwegian fairytales, East of the Sun and West of the Moon. The illustrations in the book by Danish artist Kay Nielson have been said to directly influence several individual pieces. Lagerfeld, who is not one to be sentimental for the past, makes an exception this time round, choosing the book in light of the close relationship he shared with Northern fairytales in his childhood. We loved seeing this beautiful fairytale come to live through the eyes of the fashion world’s very own genius himself.
Viktor & Rolf – Viktor Horsting & Rolf Snoeren
_ARC0009_304x456 _ARC0723_304x456 _ARC0055_304x456

Horsting and Snoeren took a trip down memory lane as they transformed textures and scraps of textiles taken from previous collections into dramatic reinventions of artisanal value. We spotted a jacket layered with textiles from Hyeres, the very first Viktor & Rolf collection dated back in 1993, and wax-dyed botanic fabric from Spring/Summer 15’ as well. Through this interesting choreography of ghosts of collections past, we seem to detect an undeniably strong message from the tone of the show: the importance of recycling. We’re looking at jackets reworked with patched work, pieced together by tweed and tulle, re-embroidered jeans, vintage sweaters, and what seems like a hundred reused buttons sewn consciously onto garments. It’s great to see Viktor & Rolf riding the wave of environmental consciousness, and we’ll heed their advice for sure. Thrift shopping, here we come!
Giambattista Valli
_VAL0097 _VAL0331 _VAL1054

Anyone who has seen Giambattista Valli’s previous shows has a clue or two as to how fervent his obsession for florals is. It seems like the designer has treaded into new territory this time, giving the sweet demeanour from his usual looks an ornate upgrade. We dug in deep into the massive bulging tulle confections and billowing meringue sleeves (not literally, we would get lost inside one of those things) and uncovered Valli’s inspiration this season. Taking his love for the 2002 movie Russian Ark and blowing it up in his garments to give it a new proportion and insight, the designer ventured within the romantic and fragile aesthetic from 19th-century Russian film. The film, which ran for 99 minutes, was single-handedly shot in one frame, panning through different rooms, moods, moments and stories. It seems like Valli was particularly captivated by the scene in the winter garden; surreal and light, it’s as though time stood still for the audience. We appreciate Giambattista Valli’s keen eye for cinematography, and his ability to transport us into a lifelike dreamscape.
Maison Margiela – John Galliano
_ARC0029 _ARC0395 _ARC0729

Ever since Galliano’s departure from Dior, everyone has been eager to see how his energy has evolved through his recent engagement with the house Maison Margiela as the new Creative Director. And needless to say, we all held our breaths as the fall couture collection ambled by. The (strangely) harmonious marriage between urban streetwear and empire influences was probably the risk Galliano had to take to garner the sort of reaction he received. The house played with knits, and mixed it up with synthetic dry-cleaning bags, almost as if to make a comment towards modern-day France’s urban attitude. Galliano has made his love for the French Revolution particularly evident in the past. Just look at his iconic graduating collection from Central Saint Martin entitled “Les Incroyables”,and you’ll know what we mean. This season, it seems that the designer did not shy away from channeling his artistic visions onto France’s historic past once again. The first sign we received was the location itself; Les Invalides. Not to mention that a statue of Napoleon, featured from above, was seemingly looking down at the show with approval. This intriguing collection shows us how France’s history is intertwined and deeply rooted with the present, emphasising the stark clashes between the empire’s beautiful past and today’s bleak urban setting. The former house Belgian designer must be at peace with the idea of retirement after seeing this outstanding piece.
Iris Van Herpen
KIM_0078 KIM_0244 KIM_0410

If we were to ever name “The Most Ingenious Collection To Break New Grounds In Fashion”, it’ll definitely be Van Herpen’s Fall Haute Couture show. This innovative designer took the study of cymatics – the visual interpretation of sound waves in the form of geometric patterns – and elevated it to define fashion of the future. Most of us may not have the ability to freely visualise sound, but Iris Van Herpen has made it so much simpler for us to witness the marvels and beauty of sound through this installation. Musician Kazuya Nagoya was present to create “seijaku” ( Japanese for calm amidst chaos ) while he masterfully orchestrates with zen bowls. Well, we certainly feel that Van Herpen has successfully achieved seijaku, judging by the ambience of the entire set. Models on stone plinths and dramatic, bioluminescent layers promenading against a steady stream of gentle sounds? We don’t know about you, but we didn’t have to be music devotees to be deeply moved by it this time.

Here's All The Good Food We Had Around Toa Payoh North This Week

In true #nylonsgeats style, we don’t just settle for the high-end restaurants, quirky cafes, or fad-of-the-month snacks (but do still send them our way!) — we always have room for everything. Yep, our stomachs can’t be satiated, which explains the dangerous 4pm snack hour… In any case, sometimes, what we’re craving for is down-to-earth, honest-to-goodness hawker fare, which thankfully, is in abundance around our office. Consider us experts of the Toa Payoh North area; we do have our meals here practically every day, you know, and since we’re feeling a little generous this Friday, here’s a look at what we ate this week — at some of the best food haunts in our area. Enjoy.

Fish Soup, $4.80, Zion 91 Ah Shun Fish Soup
The soup honestly doesn’t “wow” on its first impression, but the more you dig into it, the tastier it gets. Maybe because the flavour is settling, but who cares! This is one dish that you can eat till the last drop! The white beehoon noodles are thick, but not too thick, and importantly, are springy. The vegetables are fresh, and the generous slices of boneless fish are delicious. Dip them into soy sauce with red cut chilli to really bring out their flavour. Be warned though, the queue is long and you can forget about eating this if it’s raining. Because everyone loves hot fish soup on a cold, rainy day. True story: NYLON’s Editor can eat this 5 days a week.

Tom Yum You Mian with Sliced Pork, $4, Uno 1 Ban Mian
Uno 1 Ban Mian is our ultimate choice of comfort food – we’re even willing to queue for this tom yum version on blazing afternoons. Uno offers a choice of noodles that includes the usual ban mian and you mian and Koka noodles; you also get to choose your soup base: regular soup, sweet and sour, or tom yum. If you want, add a topping of mushrooms, sliced pork or prawns. The noodles are springy and cooked just right, but it’s the soup that’s the winner here, as it’s flavourful and made extra shiok with an egg added in. Or have the noodles dry with the soup on the side. We’re partial to the tom yum soup base as it’s rich enough yet without being too spicy, so we can slurp it down easily enough.

Roast Pork / Charsiew Rice, $4, Roasted Master
We call this the stall with the good meats. You can’t go wrong with any of the roast meats here, but it’s the roast pork (shao rou) that truly stands out. As you bite into the entire piece of meat, you can really feel the different textures of crispy skin and soft, succulent fats melt in the mouth. Look, we didn’t even stop to take a proper picture before tucking into the meal. The rice is also just right — not clumpy, and not mushy… both nightmares that we come across in our takeaway packs far too often. Is this worth the extra distance down the road in the hot, hot sun? For the roast pork, yes it is.

Laksa, $4, Soon Yan Carrot Cake & Laksa
Being such sticklers for good laksa, it’s almost impossible for us to find a great bowl these days, which is why we were over the moon when we stumbled upon this. Initially, our eyes were watering with excitement as we saw slick, white noodles being drenched in creamy, coconut gravy. And as toppings of fish cakes, cockles and fried tau pok skin were added to our bowls, our stomach’s exploded with hunger and we just couldn’t wait to eat. After trying it out though, we received a more accurate view of things. Taste-wise, the dish fell a little flat. We expected the gravy to have more of that lemak flavour, but it was still potent enough to keep us slurping down the noodles. Also, ingredients were plentiful, and that was a major plus in our books. Bonus points go to them for also whipping up a decent plates of carrot cake too!

Nasi Lemak, $2.30, Hup Lee Fried Beehoon
We all love a solid plate of nasi lemak, with the requisite fluffy rice bursting with coconut flavour, along with chicken wings/crunchy sides and that runny egg yolk. This has all of that. What’s even better? Its price. $2.30. In 2016 Singapore. And outside of your school/company canteen too. We can’t emphasise how value-for-money this meal is — there are two sets, either this with the sausage and fishcake, flavourful and with a good crispy un-soggy exterior on first bite, or, with your standard chicken wing. Either way, you’ll love how enjoyable the rice is as you’re wolfing it down, thinking about how much money you can save for your next major holiday. The store also doles out some yummy beehoon too, in very generous portions though, so watch out for that after-lunch food coma.

Bonus: Thai-Style Wanton Noodles, $6, Wang Thai Kitchen
Okay, so we didn’t actually try it this week, but here’s a shoutout to the thai restaurant that’s a bit of a walk from our place, but so damn worth it. They’ve garnered quite a few positive reviews, with bloggers raving about dishes like the green curry, tom yum, fish cakes and pandan chicken, but on any afternoon, this perennial “special”, the thai-style wanton noodles, hits the spot. The wantons were the star obviously, being fresh, succulent and generous with the meat fillings, while the springy noodles came with just the right amount of sauce and chilli to make every bite a truly mesmerising one. As for the choice of toppings, seriously, crispy wanton skin and fried salmon skin? It’s a total treat, and you don’t even need to dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant for that.

Try This Record-Breaking Brazilian Wax

Ah, the Olympics. That window of time that comes every four years when the world gets to marvel at the amazing feats the human body can achieve, as the best athletes across the continents come together to fight for personal and national glory in the form of the coveted medals and broken records.
Never mind that we won’t get to catch all the action live from Singapore, but we’ll still be taking the time to catch some of the most exciting events (even if they come in the form of delayed telecasts) – sports like track & field and swimming never fail to keep our eyes glued to our screens and our bottoms to the edges of our seats. We know the ones to watch: Jamaica’s Usain Bolt who looks set to shine again in the 100m and 200m events, and the USA’s Michael Phelps, already the holder of the most number of Olympic medals, add even more to his tally in what is possibly his last Games. It’s really the sheer speed at which the sprinters blaze their way to the finish line and the swimmers power through the laps that make these two sports the most-watched – there’s always the possibility of things changing in a split second.
In the spirit of record-breaking speed and in line with the Rio Olympics, this month, you should really try out the fastest Brazilian wax in town at Strip. They’re really the waxing authorities, guaranteeing that you’ll be in and out within 30 minutes; they’re also the holders of the world record for most number of Brazilians performed worldwide – that’s 3,000,000 and counting. That’s a feat on par with some of the amazing things we’ve watched athletes achieve at the Olympics.
While all these things are great, but what we know you’ll appreciate most about Strip is their unrelenting dedication to upholding the highest hygiene standards. That means each customer gets her own personal sealed waxing kit, which contains the necessary tools such as wooden spatulas, hygiene wipes and cotton pads, and there’s also absolutely no double dipping the spatula into the wax.
The experts at Strip work hard to make your Brazilian experience as pain-free as possible, so if it’s your first time, relax. It’ll be fine. Trust us on this, and go ahead and book your first appointment with Strip and get your virgin Brazilian session at just $45* (u.p. $62) – just quote “NYLON” to enjoy this special price. Because when it comes to Brazilian waxes, just like on the track or in the pool, we all know speed matters. A lot.

It’s Meat Paradise with Oxwell & Co’s New Weekend Roast Menu

While there’s no denying that balanced meals are ideal for our health, sometimes, it’s just nice to take a step back to gorge ourselves silly, especially if it concerns meat. Dining at Oxwell & Co is perfect for doing exactly just that.
The mains on their new weekend roast menu features five different types of meat delights, including a Pan-Roasted Grouper ($32), Roast Free-roam Chicken Breast ($36), Welsh Shoulder of Lamb ($38), 150 Day Grain-fed Onglet Roast, and a Grass-fed Prime Rib on the Bone ($16/100g). Even the starters are meat-friendly, with a Beef Tartare ($18), Char-grilled Whole Quail ($19), and Smoked Haddock ($22) to get your appetite revved up.

Oxwell & Co Weekend Roast Menu

Grass-fed Prime Rib on the Bone

Our favorite out of the lot though, has to be the prime rib. Succulent and juicy, each individual slab of roast beef had this delicious gamey flavour that wasn’t too overpowering or sickening to the palate. The edges of its skin were crisp and charred, while there was a good amount of moisture retained in the flesh. Our only gripe would be that some parts of the meat were inconsistent in texture. But with such a large amount of meat being cooked, that’s forgivable.
If you’re in a big group or you can’t decide on which meat to go for, do try out the Sharing Meat Platter ($75/110). It consists of chicken, beef and lamb with Yorkers roast spuds and gravy. Diners also need not worry about missing out on their veggies. There’s Brussels Sprouts & Smoked Bacon ($8/16), Roasted Sweet Carrots ($8/16), Roast Potatoes ($7/14) and a Pear & Stilton Salad ($6/12) to go for.
Brussels Sprouts Oxwell & Co

Brussels Sprouts & Smoked Bacon

Our recommendation? The brussels sprouts, for sure. Adequately salty and smoky, with a tinge of buttery goodness, the brussels sprouts were a great way to cleanse the palate after eating all that meat. If anything, there were also chewy smoked bacon bits to enjoy! The carrots were delectably sweet, but alas, they were slightly too buttery, if not we might have chosen them as our number one veggie dish.
Overall, Oxwell & Co’s latest weekend roast menu is a great excuse to put that diet on hold and indulge in some meaty goodness. If you can’t bring yourself to do that, we don’t blame you, it’s a lot of meat to take in at the end of the day. But if you’re in a ravenous mode and you’ve got a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to kill, you know where to head.
Oxwell & Co’s Weekend Roast Menu is available every Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm.

Here’s Xiaomi’s First Ever Laptop, and it’s a lot like Apple’s Macbook Air

Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air

There seems to be a lot of mimicking going around in the tech industry these days. If Instagram’s new “stories” feature is a near duplicate of Snapchat’s My Story, you could say the same for the Mi Notebook Air. Xiaomi’s first Windows 10 laptop is a spitting image of Apple’s Macbook Air at first glance, even borrowing the “book” and “air” from its name.

Mi Notebook Air

So, what can consumers expect from this gorgeous-looking product? Well, layout-wise, there are plenty of similarities between the Mi Notebook Air and Apple’s Macbook Air. First off, both laptops are seductively sleek, with their attractive aluminium bodies and clean designs.
In terms of measurements, both laptops are similar too, but the Mi Notebook slightly shades it in this department. For instance, the 13.3-inch Notebook Air measures 14.8mm thick and weighs 1.28kg, and is thinner and lighter than the 13.3-inch MacBook Air. However, Xiaomi’s 12.5-inch Notebook Air has a thickness of 12.9mm and 1.07kg, almost like the 12-inch Macbook Air’s 13.1mm thickness and 0.92kg weight.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air Measurement

That being said, the Mi Notebook Air series isn’t just all style without substance. The 12.5-inch model has a Intel Core M3 processor, 4GB RAM and a 128GB SSD under its belt, whereas its 13.3-inch cousin can boast of an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. In addition, there’s also a formidable NVIDIA GeForce 940MX dedicated graphics card stashed inside to boot. Great if you’re a gaming enthusiast or serious designer.
Generally, the Mi Notebook Air is a high quality product that isn’t too expensive. While hardcore Apple fans may rage over the fact that most of its design isn’t original, there’s no doubting that this laptop has what it takes to claim at least a substantial slice of the overall market share pie.
Now check out the official promo of the Mi Notebook Air:

Xiaomi’s 12.5-inch and 13.3-inch Mi Notebook Air is currently on sale in China and will retail at 3,499 Yuan ($712) and 4,999 Yuan ($1017) respectively. As of yet, there have been no announcements on store releases for other regions. Both laptops are available in gold and silver. Click here to get yours today.

Travel In Style With The New Collection From RIMOWA x Ong Shunmugam

Here’s the tricky thing about travelling: we seldom look good doing it. That’s right, we’re talking messy buns, sweatpants, and bulky old carry-ons as we hop on the plane; all while doing so barefaced. But now we’ve definitely got the memo on how to effortlessly look put together the next time we’re flying the globe.
Enter: RIMOWA’s newest collaboration with local contemporary fashion house, Ong Shunmugam. Consisting of 6 unique designs by Ong Shunmugam, this fashion capsule collection entitled “Women With A Mission” holds a meaningful concept behind its release. With the prime purpose of inspiring women of Asia to embark on journeys of exploration and enlightenment, this collection seeks to empower ladies to take a leap of faith into self-exploration – and looking good while doing so.
To make things even more interesting, the 6 revamped RIMOWA Classic Flight cabin cases each represent a travel destination in Asia – namely China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia and Mongolia. Prints and traditional textiles are thoughtfully incorporated onto the exterior coat of the luggage, while the interior is lined with zany illustrations from local artist Rizibë himself. We’re almost squealing with pride for our homegrown designers here!

Look out for the key look of the collection, which is a brand new design using traditional fabric specially sourced from India. The other five designs, as fresh interpretations of Ong Shunmugam’s iconic looks from her existing collections, are equally interesting as well. Adding to the exclusivity of the collection, only three cabin cases are produced per design. You might want to join us in snatching one for ourselves the moment it releases in October!
Take a leading European premium travel luggage brand and mix it up with the flavour of local talent, and we get the most stunning cabin cases to date.

Get In On The Game Of Drones

There’s so much talk about these flying gizmos everywhere – privacy issues, new laws, flight restrictions… you name it. Amazon even revealed a new program called “Prime Air” – a system designed to deliver packages safely to customers in 30 minutes or less through the use of drones. But like many countries, the increasing buzz around drones has caught the attention of the government. There are some laws to take note of, but the rule of thumb is that if your drone is less than 7kg and is for recreation or private purposes, then you’re in the clear. We look at a few drones you might want to consider for your maiden flight of fancy.

THINGS TO NOTE
Here are some basic guidelines before flying a drone or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in Singapore:
• There are two basic permits – Operator Permit and Activity Permit – on top of other permits required from various agencies like the Singapore Police Force (SPF) or Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).
• Hobbyists who fly drones that are 7kg or less for recreational or private purposes do not need permits.
• Drones that weigh more than 7kg require you to apply for permits.
• Permits are needed to fly a drone within 5km of an airport or air base, in a Restricted or Danger area and for flying higher than 61m above mean sea level; regardless of operating weight.
• Permits are also required to conduct any commercial or specialised services such as aerial photography, surveying or flying display performances.
• Anyone found breaching these regulations can face either a maximum fine of $20,000, a jail term of up to 12 months, or both.
More information on the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore website.

XIAOMI MI DRONE

xiaomi

We all know Xiaomi as that Chinese electronics company that makes affordable smart phones, but it’s not surprising to see them expand to produce drones since they’ve already released stuff like rice cookers and self-balancing electric scooters. Most drones are generally difficult to operate, but Xiaomi looks to appeal to a wider group of consumers with its Mi Drone. They’ve included a number of smart flight controls and autopilot options, as well as functions like automatic take-off, landing and return modes
to make it easier to fly the drone. The Mi Drone has a 1.2mm-thin modular body design with foldable landing gear to make it lighter and more portable while the four propellers that extend out of the body have propeller guards and feature an aerodynamic design. These factors, along with a 15.2V battery with a capacity of 5100mAh, allows the Mi Drone a flight time of up to 27 minutes. On the chassis itself is a ball-shaped 16-megapixel 1080P or 12-megapixel 4K camera (depending on which version you’re going for). Both cameras come with a Sony backside illuminated CMOS sensor and 104-degree wide-angle lens, and are attached to a super sensitive three-axis gimbal that stabilises up to 2000 vibrations per second.

DJI PHANTOM 4
dji

The Phantom 4 was designed to be simple enough for newcomers, yet sophisticated enough for the pros. While its predecessor is already considered as one of the easiest to fly right out the box, DJI takes it up a notch by introducing some insanely intelligent features. The Obstacle Sensing system on the Phantom 4 comes with two forward-facing optical sensors to scan for obstacles, which will help the drone to manoeuvre around it without deviating from its flight path. But if it can’t go around it, it’ll slow to a stop and hover until you redirect it or trigger the “Return to Home” function. Another cool feature is the groundbreaking ActiveTrack function, which lets you track and follow a subject, keeping it in the centre of the frame. When this mode is engaged via the DJI Go app on your iOS or Android device, you’ll still have full control over the camera movement to create that amazing 360-degree panning sequence like how the pros do it. And if you’re feeling a little lazy, you can use the TapFly feature that will allow you tap a destination on your device for the Phantom 4. It’ll calculate a flight path and avoid any obstructions in the way. If you’ve ever wanted to have a taste of what drone racing is like, engage the Sports Mode, which will allow the Phantom 4 to fly at its top speed of 20m/s (or 72km/h) for up to 28 minutes on a full battery. The 4K camera is very similar to the one on the Phantom 3, with the exception of improved optics for better corner sharpness and less distortion, and the ability to record 1080p slow-motion videos at 120 frames per second.

$2,090. Available at Sky Hobbies Singapore (Textile Centre, 200 Jalan Sultan #02- 36A), The Drone Shop (Viva Vista Mall, 3 South Buona Vista Road #01-29) or online at skyhobbies.com.sg and thedroneshop.co.

3DR SOLO
3dr

The 3DR Solo is one of the best and smartest drones around, powered by two 1GHz computers and world-first technologies to help you achieve shots that would otherwise be challenging for even the most experienced drone pilots. The smart controller is super intuitive and easy to use; it actually looks a little like your usual gamepad, with dedicated buttons to launch or return the Solo back to you. The controller screen shows basic info like altitude, speed and camera angles, but can accommodate smart devices as big as an iPad Mini to provide a large display needed to compose your shots. But what really takes the cake for the Solo are its four Smart Shot features – the Cablecam Shot puts it on a virtual cable to move between two designated points; the Orbit Shot circles around a subject for that “wrap around” shot (you’ll still be able control the altitude of the Solo and its distance from the subject); the Selfie Shot puts you in the centre of a scenic aerial pull-out and the Follow Mode will track a designated subject. With these, you can make the drone’s computer your second operator as a pilot or cameraman instead of piloting both the drone and camera yourself. Alternatively, you can program the Solo to do all the work for you, but can override it at any time to tweak and direct your shots. However, you may need to use a redirecting service like vPost to get it shipped to Singapore once you buy it online (totally worth it).
US$799.95. Available online. 3dr.com

PARROT BEBOP DRONE
parrot

The glass fibre-reinforced ABS structure of the Parrot Bebop Drone not only makes it super light (400g), but robust as well; it’s also really easy to take apart and reassemble so you can bring it around with you. It has a 14-megapixels fisheye-lens front-facing camera that can capture videos in Full HD. This camera was exclusively developed for this drone and can stream the camera feed on the smart device’s screen in real time. Parrot has incorporated four shock absorbers to cushion engine vibrations and algorithms for a 3-axis image stabilisation so that your footage doesn’t look like a scene from Cloverfield. One of the cooler things about the Bebop is that you can control it using your own smart device (we recommend using something big, like an iPad) via a free app called FreeFlight 3.0 (compatible with iOS, Android and Windows devices). Virtual joysticks control the altitude and the angle of the camera, as well as the flying direction when you tilt your device. And when you’re done, the “Return Home” button will bring the Bebop back to its original take-off position. They still offer the Bebop Drone Skycontroller though; an RC-like remote control that boosts the WiFi range up to 2km. It features two hand controllers with physical joysticks, ministicks to adjust the camera angle, and a shelf between the two handles to attach your smart device.
$749 (drone only); $1,349 (with Bebop Drone Skycontroller). Available at Newstead Technologies (Funan DigitaLife Mall, #03-01). parrotcorp.com
