Introducing Instagram Stories: A Snapchat 2.0?

If you can’t beat them, join them. It’s an extremely popular catchphrase; something that most people say from time to time. And now, big companies like Instagram are adopting it as a mantra for their business operations as well.
In an announcement on Tuesday, the social media giant released its latest tech feature called “stories”, a content feed so similar to Snapchat’s My Story, you might even be tempted to call it pure carbon copying.
So what exactly is Instagram Stories? Well, just like Snapchat, you get to string together photos and videos together in a highlight reel of your day. You can also accessorise your feed by adding texts and emojis to your pictures and videos, and check out other people’s stories to see what they’re up to.

Instagram Stories

Everything disappears after 24 hours. Of course, if you want to keep your stories, you can download them to your phone by navigating to the bottom right hand corner of the selected photo or video. Just click save, and your story is kept for life.
If not, you can just post these stories to your regular profile grid, although the element of privacy is lost, as everyone can see them normally. Don’t want a particular person to view your story? Easy. Just head over to the three dots next to a person’s profile and click on ‘Hide Story From’. Bam! He or she won’t be able to see a thing.
Stickers-wise, Instagram still loses out to Snapchat. There aren’t any cutesy dog filters to play with, and hardcore Snapchatters may choose to remain Snap-chatting the way they’re used to. Also, it’s debatable as to whether implementing such a feature into their format is a smart move for Instagram.
Hide Story From Instagram Stories

That being said, Instagram’s move will definitely cause ripples in the social media landscape. Older adult users who are already used to Instagram may start using these new features more, and for the sake of convenience, regular Snapchatters might be tempted to shift platform.
Whatever the case is, both social media channels are both uniquely great in their own ways, and it’ll be a darn shame if this turns out to be a war that ruins them, instead of improving them.

How To Dress Like Your Favourite Suicide Squad Villainess

With Suicide Squad dropping tomorrow, we’re more than excited to jump on the bandwagon and begin discussing the comic book characters starring in this highly anticipated DC blockbuster. As much as we can’t wait to hop into theatres to see bad superhumans go on some not-so-bad quest, we’d first like to look at the main star of the show; that’s right – the ladies.
We know, we know, Halloween is still a couple of months away. And we can already foresee countless Suicide Squad costumes this year (we called it here first, folks). But here’s a guide on how your wardrobe can be influenced by your favourite villainess, and how you can pull it off subtly so.
Harley Quinn
GalleryMovies_1920x1080_SS-08020r_56709d65b0de73.30668681
Everyone’s favourite female villain – lets face it, we’re all excited for the film because of her – is most notable for her half-pink-half-blue locks. Her deranged exterior encompasses the slightly peculiar story on how she fell in love with The Joker, which in turn destroyed her initial persona as his psychiatrist. We’d love to see how Daddy’s Lil Monster wreaks havoc among the team with her offbeat and fun-loving personality. Oh Harley, you never really know how to make a good first impression, do you?

Enchantress

Arguably the most powerful addition to the team, – well, she is a witch after all – the Enchantress’ massive abilities put all other superheroes and villains to shame. We’ve already caught glimpses of the talented Cara Delevingne in the film, and all we can say is that we’re expecting a captivating performance form her. From looks itself, we’re enthralled the moment the screen flashes to her. She’s dressed with statement metallic accessories and of course, that headgear.

Probably one of the only few good guys in the squad, we can’t possible leave this master swordswomen out. Especially not when her backstory serves to be tragically heart-wrenching. Born as Tats Yamashiro, she lost her husband to the blade of a jealous brother-in-law, which resulted in the death of both her children. She claimed the soul-capturing blade for herself, and it has remained her signature weapon. You wouldn’t want to mess with this highly skilled, no-nonsense swordswoman.

Beam Me Up: The Wireless Chargers You Need In Your Life

If you’ve ever watched Star Trek and marvelled at how Scotty was transporting people in record speed, without any cumbersome machinery, well, you’re not alone. It’s this kind of advanced science, magic really, that informs the world of wireless charging as well – imagine, finally, no more tangled wires, frayed ends and lost cables. It’s as simple as placing your smartphones down and having pure power delivered straight into their cores; looks like we just got beamed right into the future. We’ll start with some of the best- looking models out there.

HOW IT WORKS
• An electromagnetic field in the charger transfers power to a receiver that’s in close proximity – one that’s either already embedded within your device, or enabled with an external receiver.
• Most use Qi technology, a standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium for wireless charging.
• Some Qi-enabled smartphones include: Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Nokia Lumia 950, Sony Xperia Z4V
• If you own an iPhone, or non-Qi-enabled model, fret not; you can opt for an external receiver that’s still as sleek. Examples include the iQi mobile receiver that has a smart ribbon cable connected to a at surface you can slip easily under your phone cover (US$35), while there are also charging covers you can snap on, including the ones from Aircharge ($52.49) or IKEA ($39.90 for the iPhone 6).

AUKEY LUNA WIRELESS CHARGER
aukey
This one should win beauty pageants, with its slim polished glass top and brushed metallic stand – and it looks just like the moon too. Both gold and silver models allow you to rest your phone on a ledge, or, remove the stand and lay it flat, while there are three hidden overlapping planar charging coils that ensure a fast charging rate of 1.3A. Grab some tea and opt for a little moon appreciation while at it.
US$37.99, available online at amazon.com.

FONESALESMAN QISTONE+
fonesalesman2
For an utterly zen-like model, go for the QiStone+, which comes without a hint of wires in sight. What’s great is that it’s a totally portable battery pack that can be wirelessly charged itself. The lightweight “stone” works great with Qi-enabled devices, with 4,000mAh of power to keep them topped up all day, and even has the unique quality of charging several devices at once – just hook the other one up to the USB port for some extra juice.
US$79.99, available online at fonesalesman.com.

TYLT VÜ
tylt
One of the earliest brands to come up with the tilted design, and via a Kickstarter campaign too, this wireless charger is at a 45-degree angle so you can use your phone comfortably as it charges. Also using the three-coil technology, you can place your phone anywhere on the pad, portrait or landscape, to register a charge. Other than the usual black in a soft-touch material, it’s just as splendid in bright blue or red.
US$49.99, available online at tylt.com.

IKEA RIGGAD WORK LAMP
ikea
We go to them for clutter-free, affordable furniture, but the purveyors of Scandinavian design have something ingenious to offer: wireless charging, in the form of lamps, tables and charging pads. Blending in seamlessly into your home, the RIGGAD work lamp sits pretty with its white and natural wood design, offering focused lighting while you can simply place your phone at its base to charge it up. Then, there are the charging pads, both single and triple versions, in neat and wonderfully intuitive designs.
$99 for the RIGGAD Work Lamp, $59 for the NORDMÄRKE Single Pad in Birch or White. Available at IKEA. ikea.com.sg

AIRCHARGE SLIMLINE QI WIRELESS CHARGING PAD
aircharge
Here we have yet another slim example, though the discreet, no-frills design is delightfully space-saving, camouflaging into your work station while you can easily bring it along on your travels.
$37.49, available online at mobilefun.sg.

SAMSUNG ACTIVE FAST CHARGING WIRELESS CHARGING STAND
samsung

Together with the launch of the Galaxy S7, Samsung rolled out a new model of their fast wireless charger, now a stand-up version, with a tiny shelf so you can view incoming notifications or watch videos while it’s charging. Capable of charging at speeds 1.4x faster than the standard wireless charger, it’s kinda useful that there’s a hidden silent fan to keep the temperature down too.
$98, available at the Samsung Experience Store, VivoCity #02-28/29. samsung.com/sg

WASSERSTEIN QI WIRELESS CHARGING PAD
wasserstein
You don’t need to be a hipster to admire this clean wooden design, made by a company that manufactures a wide range of home and electronic products, all with a similar refined touch. Perhaps its small size is an advantage in cluttered desk situations, while a white rubber ring, a nice match for the natural tone, keeps your phones in place.
US$17.99, available online at wasserstein-home.com.

INCIPIO GHOST FREEDOM QI WIRELESS CHARGING PAD

incipio
Simple, sleek and highly functional, this device is compatible across all Qi-enabled smartphones, while you really shouldn’t judge its small surface area – there are three internal coils that cover a larger charging surface so you can freely place your phone anywhere
on the pad. The rubberised surface keeps the phone in place so it won’t slip off.
US$59.99, available online at incipio.com.

SWICH PREMIUM WIRELESS CHARGING STAND
swich
Meet the fine wine of wireless chargers, a stunning piece crafted with the premium materials of fine Italian ceramics and Slovenian wood, shaped with pleasing organic lines. The state-of-the-art model by Lutman Design Studio doesn’t come cheap, but you really pay for design – the base is click-fitted so you can rotate the charging pad around, while your phone will seem to float, only because of the micro suction surface that seamlessly holds it in place.
From US$219.99, available online at swichwicharger.com.

Singapore Represent: Local Talents To Perform at US-SG White House State Dinner After-Party

Yep, confirmed. In fact, make it Mythbusters-confirmed.
Two of our homegrown music talents will be performing at an exclusive after-party at The White House: local rapper ShiGGA Shay and singer/radio personality/NYLON cover girl Tabitha Nauser. You can expect the Obamas to be there, along with PM Lee.
The news was first announced by Grizzle Grind Crew earlier today on their Twitter account.

While the official dinner, tonight, serves to “mark the longstanding friendship between our countries”, and coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, we’re still pretty stoked that they had invited the musicians down to perform as well. And yes, it’s a big deal — especially since this official visit is a first by a Singapore prime minister since 1985. Lots of history-making stuff here.
Extensive reports were previously made on the four-course meal, black-tie of course, all of which show off some of US’ best produce — Maryland crabs make up the starter dish of a crab salad, the second course serves up heirloom tomatoes from the White House garden along with green papaya, pickled green mangoes and a soursop sorbet, while the stunning main course features American wagyu beef with a Marrow Crust, and sides of roasted yams, wilted kale and heirloom carrots. All this closes with a dessert of Peach Sangria cake, infused with Asian flavours of palm sugar, coconut milk and fragrant lime leaves.

The Lomo’Instant Milano Camera is Simply Bellissimo

Lomo'Instant Milano Camera by Lomography

Despite all of humanity’s technological advancements, there’s a certain charm when it comes to instant cameras. Perhaps it’s their gorgeously sleek designs, or maybe it’s just the concept of using one – receiving beautiful, printed photos in a jiffy. Who doesn’t love that?
Whatever the case is; the release of new instant cameras always get us fired up, and the latest one to do so is Lomography’s Lomo’Instant Milano Edition.
Inspired by the Italian fashion capital of Milan, Lomography’s latest product is a symbol of aesthetic excellence. Pastel shades of pink and green envelop the camera’s petite frame, while an eye-catching monochrome colour scheme completes the rest of the design. No kidding, these lomographers sure know how to take pictures in style.

Lomo'Instant Milano Camera

In terms of specs, the camera packs a punch too. Instant photography lovers can look forward to functions such as unlimited multiple exposures, a built-in wide angle lens with additional fisheye, close up and portrait lenses, as well as colour flash gels in red, blue, purple and yellow. If you want to take things further, there’s also a tripod mount for getting those really tricky shots right.
All in all, Lomography’s latest product is a lovely marriage between style and substance. While we may depend on our camera phones for everyday picture taking, there’s no denying that memories are better reminisced about in printed, rather than pixel form.
The Lomo’ Instant Milano is retailing at $188. Available at Lomography’s online store!

Get Brows That Stay Perfect Even Through The Most Intense Workouts

The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics will be upon us in mere days, and as you might be aware, the lead up to this year’s Games have been nothing short of dramatic. Zika virus scares, the entire Russian contingent almost getting banned because of doping, and some serious concerns being raised over the condition of the Athletes’ Village are just a few from a longer list. Oh, boy. We’re still really excited to gear ourselves up to catch the various sports and cheer on Team Singapore anyway – even if we can’t catch the action live on television – and here’s to hoping that by the time the closing ceremony takes place at the end of August, the world would have witnessed another year of awe-inspiring sporting achievements and inspiring displays of sportsmanship, and all this drama would have been forgotten.
We’re also letting the Olympics inspire us to work out a little bit more this month, since watching all these world-class athletes do their thing will surely be good motivation. So while you schedule in that few extra spin classes, slot in a few more runs around the neighbourhood, or push yourself to finish a few more laps in the pool, we have a nifty little tool we want to tell you about.

Browhaus Classic Brow Lead

Browhaus is the ultimate authority in brow shaping and filling, and we turn to them for all our regular brow needs. But something you might not know is that they make a credible eye makeup line that includes the Classic Brow Lead, a waterproof brow pencil that has been made exactly for the active lifestyle that you lead (or are trying to lead). The idea here is that thanks to the super waterproof pencil formula that glides onto your skin with ease, your brows stay perfect even after you’ve sweat buckets – tried and tested: it lasted through a hot yoga session for us – so all you have to focus on is working out to feel great, because you know your brows still look great. The double-ended pencil has a spoolie brush on the other end, so you can easily flip it around to ensure all your brow hairs are in place.
From now till 31 August, you get your chance to try it out for yourself, as you get one free Classic Brow Lead (U.P. $17.90) with every Brow Threading session* – just quote “NYLON” to make the redemption.
We can’t think of a more ideal brow situation, really. We leave Browhaus with perfect arches, as well as the tool we need to keep them looking that way through even the most intense workout. Go ahead, sweat it all out.

*Terms and conditions apply: Valid for new customers, one-time redemption only. Promotion runs till 31 August 2016. Appointments can be made by calling 6471 2769, walk-ins also accepted. browhaus.com

Fred Perry Subculture Live – One For The Cool Kids

Specific Islands Singapore Band

Good news music fans. Following a three-year break, Fred Perry’s immensely popular Subculture Live gig series makes a return to Singapore this August, with a rollicking line-up to boot.
Here’s what the fuss is all about. Having started in the UK in 2005, Subculture Live helped propel talented new artists into the spotlight, and fast forward to 2016, little has changed. The British clothing line still champions the rise of the underdog musician, and to that we say mucho el respecto.
For Singapore’s version of the gig series, revelers can catch Jack Savidge of Friendly Fires fame take over the decks with a DJ set, while in terms of local acts, there’s veteran DJ collective Poptart, lo-fi group Subsonic Eye, and Tropical-Rock quartet Specific Islander to look forward to. Now how’s that for some awesome live music?
As for special effects, trippy visuals will command the dance-floor thanks to ATTAGIRL’s visual arts guru EMPYREAL, and frankly, we can’t wait to see how that’ll turn out at the refurbished National Gallery. It looks as if this gig’s going to be a real treat for the senses!
Such a bummer then that tickets are all sold out. Well, peeps going for the gig, you know what to look out for. As for who to look out for, we are extremely proud to say that one of own will be performing at the event itself. Introducing Joanne Cheah, guitarist / keyboardist and lead vocals of Specific Islander, and designer extraordinaire at Nylon. Check out her interview with Nylon’s Editor (and her boss) Adele Chan, as she candidly discusses what makes her tick:

Joanne Cheah Specific Islands

Adele: Are you excited about this Thursday?
Joanne: Yup. A bit nervous.
Why nervous?
Haven’t had a show in a while.
How often have you and the band been practicing?
Usually twice a week. This week we’re practicing every day.
Wow. How do you balance work at NYLON and band practice?
Hahaha! Well I think the nice thing about Nylon is that we get all our work done, and when we go home we’re not burdened by it. So there’s nothing to stop us from pursuing a full creative life outside of the office.
Well said! Are you the band’s publicist too?
Nope! That’s left to our bassist Nicky. He’s the social guy.
You could be a publicist. Just saying. So what do you do in the band?
I play guitar/keyboards and do lead vocals.
Does that make you the leader?
Sometimes, but maybe cos I talk the most/loudest. Hahaha
Would you ever go full time into music?
Joanne Cheah is typing
Not in the foreseeable future, I think that the music industry in Singapore is still so small. Playing a niche genre that won’t get any radioplay also limits our mainstream appeal, besides it’s more fun when it’s not “for real”.
Do you think The Sam Willows are “for real”??
YES. The ultimate scene of “for real” music. But I guess now that we have the corporate approval of Fred Perry, we can’t really say anything about musicians with sponsorship deals.
Do you listen to yourself sing and play while at work?
Eee no!
Joanne Cheah Specific Islands

Then what do you listen to while working?
Spotify discover weekly. It knows me better than I know myself. Hahahaha.
So tell us honestly, have you been doing “band stuff” during office hours?
I look at visual references sometimes when there’s nothing else to work on. If it’s music inspiration-wise it happens in the background.
So honest! Aren’t you afraid your Editor is going to read this interview?
The Editor is conducting the interview! And I get my work done, so I’m not really afraid. Hahahaha!
But what about this interview? This isn’t work is it!
It wasn’t my idea!
Don’t sweat it.

Why We're Taking Hair Colour Inspiration From New York City

It’s easy to get into an Empire State of Mind. There’s a reason why so many songs have been written about the Big Apple, and why it’s the setting of so many of the most recognisable movies and television shows. It’s the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, after all, and one of the best places to get inspired; calling New York City the most famous city in the world wouldn’t be such a bold statement, because has any other city in the world managed to capture the collective imagination and hold such a significant presence in pop culture to such an extent?
Makes complete sense, then, that since NYC is Redken’s home city, the Fifth Avenue brand is going back to its roots for this season’s hair colours. The “Colour My NYC” campaign is all about shades influenced by some of New York’s most iconic landmarks, from the towering Empire State, all the way down to the ubiquitous yellow taxis that roam the avenues and streets.
Relax – we don’t mean sporting bright yellow hair here. Redken has incorporated parts of the city into the hair colours in subtle ways, so yellow taxis become coppery highlights in a head of auburn; the Empire State Building is reflected in brunette tones that catch the light in all the right ways; and the spirit of The Rink at the Rockefeller Centre, the city’s most famous ice skating rink that comes to life each winter, is translated into a full head of platinum for the bold ones.

The methods with which your hairstylist will be applying the colour also stem from rather unexpected places of inspiration: first, the Yin & Yang symbol, which represents two opposite forces coming together as one whole – in the same way, hair colour will be applied with a “slicing” method in opposing directions, while ensuring the colour still looks cohesive.

And then, there’s the Kryptonite method – it might reduce Superman to a mere powerless being, but when it comes to hair colour, it’s all about layering on the dyes to make the hair look multidimensional, and with high shine (no glowing green hair here, promise).

All the looks shown here were created by local stylists using exactly these two techniques, to showcase the myriad of statement shades that all channel the spirit of NYC. Whether you prefer to keep to the dark side of the city with brunette tones inspired by architecture, or you’d rather take it all the way to the other extreme with unabashedly bright shades in the spirit of yellow cabs and fire hydrants, there’s something for everyone here. It’s New York City, after all.

The Latest Social Media Buzz: Gucci’s Ace Sneaker

Jumping aboard the whole sneaker movement, Gucci’s highly raved about Ace sneaker dropped last May, sparking off frenzy amongst the entire community of sneaker enthusiasts. Featuring the ever-classic Gucci green-red-green stripe detail and various tongue-in-cheek motifs (think lightning bolts and pineapples dressed in glitter), these sneakers add a distinctive touch of youth to the well-composed brand.

We can only owe it to a house like Gucci to take the minimalistic and straightforward Ace, and craft out a worldwide digital art project around it.On the 27th of July, artists around the globe collaborated with Gucci, taking over its Snapchat with their own interpretation of the Ace’s energy via highly conceptual short films and stunning visuals. This visual collaboration has also extended to Gucci’s Instagram as well.

From the likes of Ward Robert’s eccentric and aesthetically nostalgic film at a basketball court to the playful motion graphics of handcrafted props made out of paper conceptualized by Julianna Szabo, these shorts make one thing evident; that the Ace takes us through different walks of life.
We’re more than inspired to get ourselves a pair and start crafting our own story alongside these everyday go-tos.

There's A New Cafe&Meal MUJI In Town

MUJI Singapore opens its tenth store at Raffles City, which also comes with the second Café&Meal MUJI here. There are quite a few reasons why this new store gets top marks from us.

We’d go to MUJI’s new 10,600-square feet space at Raffles City to revamp our lives – they’ve got the experts there to tell us how to improve our lives the MUJI way, i.e. make it simpler, yet more functional. Go to the Interior Advisors for tips on how to furnish your home in the clean, minimal aesthetic that we love the brand for, and in the most space-efficient way. When you pick out your new sofas, curtains, covers and rugs, you’ll get to choose the design material, colour, size of your new furniture buy all thanks to the Made-to-Order Fabric and Furniture service; the Raffles City store is also the place where select pieces from the Oak Furniture range will be customisable.

The inside of your wardrobe gets a revamp as well, as there will be Styling Advisors on hand to guide you along in the way of styling yourself in head-to-toe MUJI, which is definitely something to aim for, especially considering all those well-cut organic cotton tops, and the flattering skinny jeans.

So grab these Advisors and ask away, and then go grab a simple yet incredibly satisfying meal at the second Café&Meal MUJI, the other main attraction at MUJI Raffles City. The 70-seat space will make the perfect respite for lunch breaks on weekdays, and a pit stop while out shopping on weekends. As expected, there will be new selections being added to the menu, like a Chicken Nanban Donburi – which also happens to be a Raffles City exclusive – featuring fried chicken in tartar sauce with avocado, fresh mesclun salad, cherry tomatoes and daikon sprouts. Order a side of the Soy-Sansho French Fries, with shoestring fries peppered with a seasoning of parmesan cheese and a bit of sansho spice. As for the hot and cold deli dishes the Café&Meal MUJI is known so well for, the latest additions are a Baked Salmon with Miso Sauce, Roasted Sakura Chicken with Sesame Crust, Baked Sweet Potato Cake and a Salad with Sakura Chicken and Mixed Beans – all healthy and light, but very much tasty.

The Different Pairs Of Sunglasses You Need

We tend to look past the importance of sunglasses – it not only protects your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun, it’s also an accessory you definitely need, whether you’re heading for a holiday or not. We’ve rounded up a few styles that we’d think are necessary additions to your trove of accessories.
Tinted

hmprod
H&M, $14.90.

These reflective, tinted lenses are undeniably loud. But though wild, you’ll be surprised at how easy it’ll be to pull these off once you find one with the right colour tint that matches your complexion. Alternatively, silver mirror lenses are always something you can fall back on. Either way, these shades give off a futuristic look that’s really sleek.

The classic

LIKEWOW_BLKSMK_FACE_99d2f435-2707-48a0-a928-1eac27ef2e64
Quay Australia, US$60.

Everybody needs a classic black pair of sunglasses, and especially so if you’re terrified of being stared at for wearing funky shapes and colours. However, with black sunnies, picking the right frame is definitely key here. The wrong ones will overwhelm your face and you’ll risk looking like an unfortunate insect. Pick one that flatters your face shape, a good pair should ascentuate the key features on your face, and not hide them.

Aviators

Topshop, $39.90.

We’ll admit, these are not for everyone, especially if you’ve got a relatively large or round face. Since aviators are usually thinner and smaller, those with bigger faces might risk looking even more rounded with these shades. We especially love aviators for its thin temple arms and metallic rims – it’s sleek and will appear less harshly on your face.

Shapes

Asos, $26.55.

Even though these are wildly inappropriate for daily wear, these funky-shaped glasses would still make a good accessory for parties or a casual beach holiday.

PUMA x Filling Pieces

PUMA’s back with yet another beautiful pair to grace our feet. This time round, they’ve partnered with the Amsterdam based contemporary footwear brand Filling Pieces. It’s definitely strange to see two footwear brands collaborating, but we’re glad they’ve decided to partner to launch an exclusive version of the Blaze of Glory. Filling Pieces is widely known for their passion and dedication for fashion and footwear, and now, we’ll see a seamless blend of the athletic and aesthetics for the Blaze of Glory’s reinvention.

You’ll definitely recognise PUMA’s Blaze of Glory as one of their key iconic pieces. The shoe has been reconstructed with the greatest attention to detail and given a complete contemporary iteration. What we get is a cleaner, slimmer silhouette, as influenced by Filling Pieces’ casual aesthetics, with nubuck and fine quality leathers. Keeping it simple, the pair comes in only one colourway – sleek matte black with a contrasting crisp white sole made of PUMA’s signature Trinomic cushion technology that promises great cushioning and comfort.

With such a clean colourway, it definitely won’t be a feat to match these with our outfits, no matter day or night. We know you can’t resist them either, but with only 45 pairs dropping, you’d better be quick.

PUMA x Filling Pieces, $320, exclusively available at Limited Edt stores.
