Places To Get Your Bagel Fix

If you, like us, are avid fans of American TV shows, then you’re definitely aware that bagels are a big deal in the Big Apple. Since not all of us have yet gotten the chance to experience going for a daily “bagel-run” in New York City, there are still some places here on the lonely island that serves pretty good bagels. We’re not talking about frozen bagels you could easily get from the supermarket, but fresh and warm bagels with different fillings and flavours that you’d definitely fancy.

1. Two Men Bagel House

Opened by two men (duh) and conveniently located in Tanjong Pagar, Singapore’s first bagel house has been highly-lauded for their wide variety of fillings, freshly baked bagels and fuss-free dining. Their bagels are interesting, to say the least, considering how you can choose your bagels that are plain or flavoured – a wide variety that includes caramelised onions, sea salt and garlic. For the toppings, either opt for sweet “schmears” (we’re talking about so many different types of cream cheese) or the savoury “bagelwiches” that are definitely the yummiest looking things you could ever feast your eyes on. And here’s the cool part: there’s a pizza bagel too. Yes, that’s right – generously filled with chipotle tomato based sauce and pepperoni, it’s a beautiful combination of both of our favourite kind of carbs into one. Besides, they have a great instagram-worthy neon sign for you to unabashedly take several hipster shots, with a cup of coffee at the side too, of course.

2. Sacha and Sons

A “New York Delicatessen”, Sacha and Sons is aesthetically designed to look like a typical New York Deli. Though it looks rather simple, the flavours from the bagels and ingredients do pack a punch. Specialising mainly on a typical brunch fare, you’d get the quintessential smoked salmon and cream cheese with a side of scrambled eggs. Or if you’re feeling extra ravenous, they do serve meat along with the bagels for an extra hearty meal. With its generous portions and great location, it’s definitely a place to keep in mind.

3. Wild Honey

Wild honey
from wildhoney.com.sg.

If it’s brunch, Wild Honey is definitely on the list. One of the pioneers of the brunch craze in Singapore, Wild Honey serves expensive but quality food, of course. If you haven’t already known, Wild Honey names their dishes appropriately after the specific place they drew inspiration from. Aptly named I Love NY, this sesame bagel is accompanied with a side of scrambled eggs and smoked sturgeon, smoked salmon and caramelised onions. Okay we know, its owners are also the people behind Sacha and Sons, but this place is definitely for those who have meal companions who aren’t that interested in having bagels for breakfast. Besides, Wild Honey’s Tunisian is something you have to order too, while you’re at it.

CHANEL Le Rouge – Collection No. 1 Les 4 Ombres in Candeur et Expérience
We admit that to some, red eyeshadow might conjure up images of vampires or eye infections, neither of which are things we ever want to inspire our makeup looks. But CHANEL has accepted the challenge to show that red-themed makeup can be incredibly chic as long as it’s done right, just like this eyeshadow quad that features three browns anchored by a brick red shade to add an unexpected touch to traditionally safe eyeshadow colours. Don’t knock it till you try it – look out for our tutorial on how to rock the crimson shades from this CHANEL collection coming your way soon.

Oh yas – finally, the Dual-Intensity Blush that we love so much are now available in a palette of four. MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Shadow 4
The fourth iteration of MAKE UP FOR EVER’s seasonal eyeshadow palettes features some pretty intense shades like teal, purple, black and pink, anchored by the classic neutrals like white, beige and cream. Yves Saint Laurent Beauté Couture Palette Collector Danger Seduction
The luxe snakeskin pattern  on the case of this palette is enough to make this an essential Fall accessory, but inside, the warm, vibrant shades are an accurate representation of the city of Marrakech, which YSL Beauté has taken inspiration from for this palette: a warm gold, bright copper, rich brown and vibrant green, anchored by the classic matte black.
$105, available at Yves Saint Laurent Beauté stores and counters from Aug.

Sephora Colourful 5 Eye Contouring
A neutral palette is an essential every season, and we like that this Sephora palette of five shades has already done the colour matching for us by coming in four variations to cater to different skin tones: Porcelain, Light, Medium and Tan, with the colours meant to be used to subtly sculpt the eye area.
$36, available at Sephora from 15 Sep.

Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow Palette

Shades you” definitely need to swatch as soon as this is out: Element, a peach with pink shift and sparkle, and Galaxy, a smoky blue-gray with iridescent 3D sparkle.
$80, available at Urban Decay stores and Sephora from 1 Sep.

Everything We Know About The New Star Wars Films (Including Rogue One)

Over the weekend, a storm of Star Wars related news was released, and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t struggle to remain calm enough to compile all the information in this post. With Star Wars: The Force Awakens still fresh in everyone’s minds – we’re still nursing some emotional wounds too, to be honest – any news about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is welcome to help keep the burgeoning questions at bay…for now, at least.

So over the weekend, the Star Wars team held Star Wars Celebration Europe, including a panel with the film’s cast and crew, as well as new behind-the-scenes footage (as you can see above) and of course, a brand new trailer. The new trailer also features the new jungle planet known as Scarif; it’s the one that can be seen in the new poster, too.

You can also catch a brief glimpse of the new droid, K-2SO, who looks like a slightly more deadly and angst-ridden version of C-3PO, although he appears to be one of the good guys. Keen eyes can probably spot the major difference between the two droids from the get-go: only K-2SO is created with CGI. Ben Mendhelson, who plays Director Krennick of the Advanced Weapons Research for the Empire, kept things pretty hush-hush about what exactly to make of his character, but he definitely proved that Krennick isn’t here to make friends.

Mendhelson arrived in costume, flanked by stormtroopers.

There was also (finally!) news about the new Han Solo. Actor Alden Ehrenreich – who’s previous works include Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro and Twixt, Beautiful Creatures and Hail, Caesar! – has been cast as the pilot of the Millennium Falcon and Chewbacca’s best friend (don’t fight us on this). It was also announced that Han Solo will get his own film (yes, a “Solo” film, if you will), set to be directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord. The directors themselves have handled action-comedy films like 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, so we have high hopes for this one.
Of course, Star Wars Episode VIII is still in the works, which means that things over in that camp have been kept under wraps thus far (we can’t imagine any major spoilers being leaked this early, anyway). There’s also been news of what to expect in the new Star Wars Rebels season (potential spoiler alert), as well as information about updates to the EA’s Star Wars shooter Battlefront.
One thing’s for sure though: we’ve definitely got our calendars marked for more intergalactic mayhem.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be in Singapore theatres on 15 December 2016. Some information in this article was taken from io9.

Louis Vuitton's New Packaging Is In A Beautiful Shade Of Saffron

Louis Vuitton’s new packaging just got a lot more sophisticated and classy with a bright saffron shade, “Imperial Saffron “, that’s distinctive of the House’s rich history since a century and a half. This iconic shade that’s been woven into the stunning new package has been seen on several quintessential heritage pieces in the Louis Vuitton archives and similarly featured as the prominent colour of the brand’s exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris, “Volez Voguez Voyagez”.

It’s not surprising that this gorgeous shade has been widely associated with Louis Vuitton for years, and now, we’ll get to relieve the past with its new packaging that features Imperial Saffron as the main colour, adorned with the House’s significant blue ribbons, that’s been present for many decades. The two bright colours seamlessly complements, and we’re immediately reminded of the House’s “Art of Travel” – an original innovation by its founder, Louis Vuitton, who created a series of luggage, bags and accessories that were elegant and practical.
Besides its aesthetic, the material used for the new packaging draws inspiration from the leather used since 1860 by Louis Vuitton, while the new cotton ribbon handles and thicker paper provides greater resilience and durability, especially great for travelling as they can now be easily folded and kept.
We’d like to think that this is seriously a timely excuse to splurge on something quite unnecessary, yes, just for that beautiful packaging it comes in.

LISTEN: Britney, Zayn and Nathan Hartono Have New Music

Britney Spears

After that incredible medley of some her greatest hits on the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, the Princess of Pop is back to soar to the top of the charts once more, this time with help from Californian rapper G-Eazy. The track, Make Me…, is the first single off her upcoming ninth studio album, and Spears even had a hand in writing it alongside producer BURNS, Joe Janiak and G-Eazy. With six Billboard Music Awards already under her belt, as well as a Millennium Award which she received this year, recognizes her outstanding career achievements and influence in the music industry, Britney’s not backing down anytime soon. Hold on to your crown, Madonna.

Snakehips ft. Zayn

Coveted UK producers Snakehips have teamed up with global superstar Zayn for their new single Cruel, following the smash-hit success of the latter’s debut solo album “Mine of Mine”. You’re probably familiar with Snakehips’ work from All My Friends, the chart-topping, Ivor Novello winning single featuring Chance The Rapper and Tinashe. Touted as the UK’s answer to R&B, their trademark summery, glitchy new-school sound blends perfectly with Zayn’s smooth vocals, so expect to hear this song everywhere in the following weeks.

Nathan Hartono

While he’s already making waves abroad for the competition Sing! China, local singer-songwriter sweetheart Nathan Hartono also recently dropped his brand new single Electricity, after a long-awaited three years. The highly-anticipated single will be available on all digital platforms on 22 July, but don’t fret, the music video is already here! Directed by Hirzi Zulkiflie (of Munah and Hirzi), co-directed by Tree Potatoes’ Janice Chiang, and featuring 987FM’s DJ Kimberly Wang, the video features some super retro suits and amusingly snazzy choreography, in line with the song’s theme of bubbly infatuation. And we’re definitely not the only ones loving the release; views for the MV have soared to almost 60,000 in just two weeks!

Everything You Need To Try At The New Japan Food Town

The three words “Japan Food Town” should be enough to get anyone really excited already, but there are so many other things about this new 20,000 square-foot space on level 4 of Wisma Atria, which just opened over the weekend, which has just cemented its status as our ultimate new dining destination.
First off, there are sixteen outlets to choose from in there (four of which have yet to begin operations, but all will be open by the end of July 2016). They’ve got most of Japanese cuisine covered: be it sashimi, ramen, udon, shabu shabu, and even sake – as long as you name it, Japan Food Town’s probably got it.
Secondly, and more importantly, everything we tried there proved to be of consistent high quality, but the dishes don’t break the bank. This is all thanks to the bulk import of the ingredients direct from Japan, via the Okinawa Prefecture, which is relatively closer to Singapore, to keep costs as low as possible, so whatever ends up on the menu becomes surprisingly affordable, especially considering how good it is.
At the media preview, we went on a whirlwind tasting of all the outlets that are currently open, and below are the ones that stood out the most. But really, everything‘s good at the Japan Food Town – so grab all your friends and head there for a completely authentic Japanese feast, but be warned: we expect the crowds to get pretty crazy.

Bonta Bonta
#04-39

bonta bonta

We love onigiris (Japanese rice balls) in general, but we love the ones from Bonta Bonta even more, because this Tokyo establishment uses some kind of magical rice, i.e. Kinmemai rice, which is a kind of gourmet Japanese brown rice that added a whole different element to the onigiris we tried. It had an especially light yet crisp taste, and fully brought out the various toppings that included unagi, mentaiko and pickled seaweed.

Machida-Shoten
#04-40
machida shoten

This ramen establishment specialises in a super-rich tonkatsu broth – we’ve seriously never tried anything as flavourful as this one. The noodles are reminiscent of egg noodles, thicker than most other ramen noodles; you get to fully customise your bowl of ramen, from the thickness of the broth, level of flavoured oil added, and the texture of the noodles.

Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka
#04-43
tsukiji

Having a bit of Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji Fish Market right here in Wisma Atria is more than what we could have ever asked for, but that’s exactly what the Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka brings to the Japan Food Town. The sashimi we sampled was as fresh as ever, but we think you’ll want to try the Kaisendon, with fresh tuna, salmon, crab, scallop, ikura and tamago, all going at under $25.

Inaniwa Yosuke
#04-45

inaniwa yousuke

Udon noodles from Japan’s Akita Prefecture come thin and super-soft, and when dipped in shoyu or sesame sauce at Inaniwa Yosuke, it makes for a light, refreshing meal. Have it served hot or cold; we recommend the latter in the sesame sauce option – unexpectedly delicious when topped off with ginger.

Sabar
#04-50
sabar

Sabar has proven to be a favourite among many who’ve tried the offerings at Japan Food Town, and we get why – we’ve never had mackerel done so right. They serve 38 different kinds of mackerel, everything’s ridiculously fresh, and even if you’re usually not a mackerel fan, you need to try the Toro-Saba-Zuke bowl that features a special Toro Saba, meant to be eaten raw. The flame-seared saba sushi is also worth a try.

Rang Mang Shokudo
#04-54
rang mang shokudo

It’s about time to take a break from all that Korean fried chicken, and have it Japanese-style instead, in the form of chicken karaage at Rang Mang Shokudo, which serves it up crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside – what fried chicken should be, basically. We tried it in two flavours, shoyu sauce and an unusual yuzu pepper version, both of which worked really well.

Japan Food Town, #04-39/54 Wisma Atria. Open 11am to 11pm daily.

The Struggles Of Having Really Thick Hair

I know, having thick hair is definitely a true blessing, and while I’ve been told often by my friends that they are crazy envious of the sheer volume of my hair, I still struggle tremendously with my ridiculously thick mane. No, I’m not being a brat here, because even though I’m really thankful for this large fluff, these are some difficulties I face, almost daily. Thick-hair girls, you’ll get what I’m talking about.

1. Every morning is a nightmare

via GIPHY

It takes me a ridiculous amount of time to get through the mess of my tangled hair in the morning. Not to mention, it gets pretty damn painful too.

2. It takes forever to dry

via GIPHY

Here’s something to really complain about. I have friends who are able to dry their hair in minutes, or have their hair dried by just standing in front of the fan. Good grief, it takes me at least a few hours if I’m just air-drying my hair, and a good hour with a blowdryer. Don’t even get me started on the numerous complaints from hairdressers at salons I’ve been to – “your hair is SO thick” – and then, she helplessly asks a few more hairdressers to help out with the drying process. Well, at least I look like I’m being treated like a queen. One can dream.

3. Bad hair days are the worst

via GIPHY

Bad hair days are especially bad for thick manes – it will look even more volumised, which is not necessarily a good thing. While you may be constantly finding ways to get volumised hair, my thick tresses on a bad day are reminiscent of a lion’s mane – or a wild bush in the forest if you would. On these particular days, I would tie up my hair or just stay away from the world (if that’s even possible).

4. Spending a ridiculous amount of money on hair products

via GIPHY

Because my hair is thick, I use up bottles of shampoo and conditioner really quickly, which can get frighteningly pricey in the long run. And with my frizzy hair, it also means that I have to spend a lot of extra dough on special hair oils to tame it. You can already imagine the pain I always feel when I’ve reached the last drop of my hair product – a frequent occurrence, by the way.

5. Hair styling is tedious
Which is why I hardly do anything to my hair – because it would take me hours to curl it, and these curls have never lasted me an entire day anyway. Also, visits to the salon just to get my hair dyed is never a fun “girly” thing to do, it’s more of a chore really, for both myself and my hairdresser. Suddenly, I’m feeling really grateful for my extremely patient hairdresser that has to go through layers of hair just to apply the first coat of dye. This also means that budget self-dyes are impossible because I can never get an even coat.

6. But with lots of patience and love, thick hair can be pretty awesome.

via GIPHY

No worries about having flat or thin hair; or balding when I’m older. And the best part? Having endless braiding possibilities.

5 Female Korean Rappers To Check Out

With Mnet currently launching into its third season of Unpretty Rapstar, it’s evident that more and more people are beginning to recognise – and appreciate – the presence of female artistes within the Korean Hip Hop scene. Rappers like CL and Yoon Mi Rae have already made waves in their own right, but there’s still a lot more work to be done in terms of representation. That being said, you can bet that these five female Korean rappers might just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to hope for the future of Korean Hip Hop. Just listen:
*****
Yezi

When it comes to idols, the competition can get pretty ugly on Show Me The Money (SMTM) and Unpretty Rapstar, but Yezi – of girl group FIESTAR – has been kicking ass and taking names, idol title and all. If her soul-piercing stare isn’t proof of how (terrifyingly) cool she is, then just listen to her post-show solo tracks, like Cider, and you’ll see why she quickly rose to popularity and earned the respect of viewers and fellow competitors alike.

Kasper

While she (sadly) hasn’t been as musically active as we’d like her to, Kasper was definitely one of our favourite contestants on the show. With her hilarious facial expressions, never-back-down attitude and grade A* rapping ability, we’re practically desperate for her album right now. But if you just love a daily dose of Kasper anyway, you can catch her over on YouTube, where she currently hosts WISHTrendTV.

Cheetah

Arguably one of the strongest female rappers to ever come out of both SMTM and Unpretty Rapstar, Cheetah is in a league of her own. It’s hard to describe her with any other word but “cool” – maybe “talented”, but that doesn’t even need to be said at this point. From her verses that range from incredibly personal to just pure dance anthem, to always doing her own makeup, and her flawless poker faces; if there’s anyone deserving of the title “Queen”, it’s definitely Cheetah.

Kisum

As one of the youngest contestants (and Cheetah’s somewhat protégé on the show), Kisum faced a number of hurdles from the minute she stepped into the studio, but that barely put so much as a dent on her progress. Following the end of the show, Kisum’s releases have each been met with waves of success, and it’s easy to see why. Aside from her gorgeous music videos, her playful tracks perfectly suit her youthful and pleasant voice, and we can’t wait to hear more from her.

Heize

While she seems to have reverted back to her original roots as a singer for now, Heize grit her teeth and soldiered through one of the dirtiest Unpretty Rapstar battles of all time against KittiB, so we had to put her on this list somehow. We’re still waiting for her to drop an album to show her back in full rap-game force, but for now, she’s been dropping some star-studded collaborations, and we dare say she deserves the love.

Why Pom Poms Are So Ridiculously Fun To Style

You’re probably already familiar with these fuzzy little balls. Usually colourful, they’re really hard to miss, unless you’re wearing an even brighter outfit. With these pom poms, there’s a fine line between overdoing it and hitting the sweet spot of sporting an outfit that’s ridiculously adorable, and funky at the same time. These playful embellishments can be a great addition to your outfit, especially so if you want to nail that ultimate bohemian Coachella look (even if you’re not actually able to make it). We’ve wrapped up some fun ways pom poms can be incorporated in your daily outfit, without looking too gaudy or inappropriate.
1. Clothing

image1xxl jacket pom
Asos, $39.82. Pull&Bear, $79.90.

pom shirt hmprod
Zara, $69.90. H&M, $49.90.

These pom poms are playful adornments to an otherwise mundane and normal coordinate. A few of these colourful baubles would instantly brighten up your look, as well as your day. However, be sure not to overload on these pom poms, as you might risk looking like a piece of art, and not in a good way. Another great way to incorporate these into your look would be going for pieces with mono-colour pom poms (instead of colourful ones) for a subtle and more practical look.
2. Shoes

image1xxl (1) pompom zara
Asos, $39.82. Zara, $179.

We know, these look insane at first glance; but you’ll really appreciate how the colours add a unique spin to your shoes. And the best part – you could be wearing something really boring on top, but with these; you’ll look real snazzy.
3. Necklaces and bags

pompom necklace pom bag
Topshop, $36.90. Mango, $29.90.

pom bag image2xxl
Zara, $49.90. Boohoo on Asos, $44.24.

The key to pulling off accessories clad with these wild things would be to only let the accessories shine; so you can do so by playing with contrast – a monochromatic outfit would work well against these loud accessories. The key here is to not overload the colours, these accessories make a statement on their own.

The Unique Shopping Finds You Need To Check Out At Mandarin Gallery

Mandarin Gallery’s easily one of Orchard Road’s gems. Some of the more obvious reasons include dining establishments like The Providore, Wild Honey and Antoinette – definitely places to be seen at – but the less obvious reasons you might not know about are the under-the-radar shopping finds that are waiting to be unearthed, only if you venture a bit deeper into the mall’s lush corridors.
We’ve done the exploring for you already, and picked out these three shopping destinations within Mandarin Gallery, both new and old, that you might not have been aware of. There’s a story behind each one as well, so read on to see what you’ve been missing out on; then zoom straight in on these stores the next time you’re in town.

Choo Yilin Jewellery

This local jewellery brand’s second store at Mandarin Gallery is its new flagship, focused on showcasing Choo Yilin’s range of modern jewellery crafted from Type A Burmese jadeite, gemstone-based designs, as well as offering jade bangle customisation services and collection of purchases made on their e-commerce platform.

Choo Yilin was actually a political analyst before starting her eponymous brand, a completely different world from jewellery designer. For a time, she lived in Thailand where she was involved in non-profit community work, and this was when she decided to start a working partnership with the hill tribe artisans there to create jewellery. “I wanted to marry the two disparate worlds which I loved – social work and luxury design – and that was how I started working with the hill tribe artisans for our very first Choo Yilin collection,” she tells us.

Using jade to create a jewellery collection targeted at the modern woman seems an odd choice, but Choo tells us that her brand’s aim is to change existing perceptions. “Jade is, historically, an incredibly significant East-Asian icon. It’s mentioned in almost every piece of traditional Chinese literature and has been revered for being a symbol of protection and love. In this generation though, jade is more often associated with our grandparents and has unfortunately carried the connotation of being old-fashioned,” she says. “We hope that our modern interpretations of jade jewellery attempt to challenge the present notion of heirloom pieces and reinvent an Asian icon into a jewellery staple.”
Next month, look out for new pieces that truly celebrate an important part of local heritage. “Our upcoming Peranakan collection in August is one that I’m very very proud of – it truly showcases the mastery and skills of our artisans and is a testament of our dedication to capturing fine details in our jewellery,” Choo tells us. “It’s really one to watch so keep your eyes peeled for the launch!”

Previously known as Tulisan by Plus 62, Fleurs de Tropic is now a multi-label store that continues to feature mainly the hand-sketched designs from Tulisan, but also leather bags from Loevstyle, and lifestyle products from Ruma Manis – all hailing from Indonesia.

“The products are handmade, and only available in limited quantities,” Farah Suraputra, one of the store’s founders, tells us. “They can make very unique South East Asian souvenirs, and they are products that are created by team of passionate & creative Indonesians, and last for a long time.”
The Tulisan pieces are undoubtedly the ones that take centre stage. “Besides its gorgeous prints, Tulisan’s line of bags, accessories and homeware are hand-sketched by artist Melissa Sunjaya, and silkscreened using water-based inks onto cotton canvas which is chlorine-free and coated for water resistance, using energy-efficient manufacturing methods,” Suraputra tells us. “And on top of that, each bag has an individuality about it; each print comes with a little tale, and is only available in limited numbers.”

Look out for the Tulisan Bio Fantasy line, featuring prints that take inspiration from… microbes. The result is a rather abstract design that look mostly floral in nature, to make a strong statement especially when in bold shades. As Suraputra explains, “The inspiration and research behind Bio Fantasy came from personal observations on the interconnectedness of the universe. Just as cells communicate with each other to continuously deliver messages throughout the body, so too do humans as we relay information to each other.”

Japanese lifestyle store Atomi has been at its current space in Mandarin Gallery since the mall opened in 2009 – the only difference is that it’s expanded by about three times in space and many more times in inventory, in the years since.
Singaporean Andrew Tan and Japanese Mitsuko Murano are the married couple who run it, and as Tan tells us, it all began from his numerous shopping hauls while he was in Japan – in his constant quest to source for unique, made-in-Japan items, he eventually decided to just bring them in to Singapore himself.
Plenty of careful thought and curation go into the furniture, apparel and lifestyle items on sale at Atomi, to ensure only the highest-quality Japanese-made items that embody a certain lifestyle are offered to the customers. “I’m not selling a product, because everyone will buy a glass, a plate, and all those things,” Tan says. “But I’m selling a lifestyle – I’ll tell you the story and maker behind it. And that’s what makes the whole story more interesting.”

Ouur Collection products

For example, home and lifestyle products from the Ouur Collection, a brand borne out of a collaboration between Japanese furniture brand Actus and Danish media company Ouur, with the products entirely made in Japan. Tan showed us a luxuriously understated colour pencil set created with Kinfolk magazine as an example of a product that might resonate with younger consumers. “It’s reaching out to a different group of people who still believe in the organic feel of things,” he says.

To & Fro travel pouches

There are also the ridiculously lightweight travel pouches from To & Fro – you have to feel them to believe how insubstantial they weigh – in a variety of cheery colours to add both form and function to the way you keep your things organised.
Step into Atomi if you want to explore unabashedly Japanese items like these and a more organic way of life. “There will always be a space for electronics. But we just focus on serving up an exclusive feel, for people who sometimes just feel like writing on paper, feel like scribbling something, doing sketches… the touch and the feel (of everything) is very different,” Tan sums up.

The Perfume Bottle To Collect: The CK One Gold

It’s not exactly a humble thing to say we have the Midas touch – causing everything we lay our hands on to turn to gold – but that’s exactly the kind of dizzying power that the newest ck one fragrance is meant to make us feel. The ck one gold is “a tribute to the youth who can do no wrong”, and we think this bottle design comes at a very appropriate time, as everyone is slightly obsessed with dripping metallic anything (Kylie Lip Kits, we blame you).

ck one gold

Yes, this is the kind of bottle is the kind of thing that will complete your next Instagram #flatlay, but do take a whiff as well – we reckon this mix of fig, sage, neroli and patchouli makes a juicy/woody scent that will appeal to both genders, as it’s meant to. Like us, you can think of this perfume as your very own felix felicis, a precious bottle of liquid luck. ck fragrances seriously never fails to get their packaging right.

Our Favourite McDonald's Curry Sauce Now Comes In A Glorious Bottle

Throwback to probably the worst few months of our sauce-dependent lives when the most outrageously loved curry sauce took a four month long hiatus from McDonald’s. We felt the anger, tears and overwhelming emotions for the temporary loss of this humble dip. And frankly, we aren’t sure how we survived that traumatic few months with its absence – those crispy fries and tender chicken nuggets just felt…wrong. Boy, we Singaporeans are sure drama queens when it comes to food.

Then, just when you thought the worst was over, McDonald’s came up with a sauce policy that restricted our unfulfilled dreams of dipping everything with curry sauce, yes everything. Now, our unabashed desires are finally being realised; we’re talking about an actual glorious bottle of the essential Singaporean condiment.
Curry Sauce

No, this is not a drill. We are all screaming internally too. McDonald’s is really letting us embrace our local culture, and setting our diets back by a few weeks, because we’re definitely going to inhale bottles of this goodness. For just $4.50 with any Extra Value Meal, you can purchase this limited edition 375ml bottled Curry Sauce. However, each customer is limited to only 4 bottles of Curry Sauce in a single receipt, but really, nobody’s going to stop you from getting McDonald’s for all three meals if you want to have an unlimited stash of Curry Sauce at home (we won’t judge).

We’re already expecting another crazy queue reminiscent of the Hello Kitty fiasco months back.

McDonald’s Limited Edition Take-Home Bottle, $4.50 with any Extra Value Meal, available from 21 July after breakfast hours in all restaurants (except NTU, NUS, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic) and via McDelivery.

The Most Creative Runway Shows Of All Time

Make no mistake about it: fashion is definitely a form of art. But sometimes, we get bored of the standard museum space; the blank white walls, the polished wooden (or grey cement) floors, the single, occasionally somewhat unnecessary lights that hang over each piece. In that same vein, the runway is the standard vocabulary of any collection showcase, but some designers and directors have been able to take the simple, white platform we’re all used to and turn it into something truly spectacular. Thus, we present what we feel are the five most creative runway shows of all time…so far, anyway (you never know what’s turning up next season).

Fendi, Legends and Fairy Tales Collection, 2016, Rome

As part of Fendi’s 90th’s Birthday, the brand pulled off what seemed to be the impossible: staging a fashion show in the famous Trevi Fountain. Yes, in the fountain. In fact, the Italian brand actually launched a 20-month, 2.2 million dollar project in 2013 to restore the fountain – the most extensive restoration project in the fountain’s history to date. For the collection, a clear platform was built in the fountain, allowing the models to seem as if they were walking on water; a magical concept truly fitting of the “Legends and Fairy Tales” theme. Complete with orchestration befitting of a fantasy film, the show definitely goes down in fashion history as one of the most gorgeous shows of all time.

Chanel, Fall-Winter Haute Couture Collection, 2016/17, Paris

Ironically, less is more when it comes to the runway for this year’s Chanel Fall-Winter Haute Couture 2016/17 Collection. To put the concept simply, iconic head designer and creative director of the brand, Karl Lagerfeld explains in his interview:

“Nobody gets to see – not the client, not the journalist – nobody gets to see those rooms. And also, nobody gets to see the workers (…) so I think it was interesting for both sides, to put the client, the journalist, and the public in front of the working people (…) and the dresses in between.”

He’s definitely not wrong. The constant movement on stage demanded the audience’s keen eye, whether it was the designers at work or simply the models strutting their stuff. It’s also nice to be able to see all stages of the clothes on the runway, from the half-done sketches in the “drawing rooms” to the finished piece being modelled. Plus, the simple colour palette of the set meant that the collection looked even more eye-catching, if that’s even possible.

Up (øpp) Motevesning, Spring/Summer, 2014, Norway

In the furiously fast world of fashion, you can bet that people constantly have their eyes on fresh-faced designers. Problem is, it’s pretty difficult to find the right platforms to showcase your work. Enter Up (øpp) Motevesning, the independent fashion platform designs to help promote and and showcase newly-established Norwegian designers. Using the “white cube” space of the UKS (The Society For Young Artists) in Oslo, the catwalk is made entirely out of woodchip, folding out into a structure that’s reminiscent of a small rollercoaster (minus the extreme loops and turns, of course). Designed by Gartnerfuglen Architects, a group of volunteers for the non-profit biannual fashion show, the wooden spiral also ensures that you don’t have to crane your neck if you’re at the back of the crowd to get a glimpse of the designs. Talk about elevating designers, literally.

Prada, Menswear Spring/Summer 2012, Milan

The setting for this Prada show probably looks vaguely similar to the dreaded rows of desks we sit at during school examinations, only this one is a lot more colourful – and we’re not the ones being assessed. Designed by OMA/AMO, the set featured 600 blue foam blocks arranged in a 1.5m by 1.5m, allowing the runway to be interwoven with the audience. Models would walk between the blocks – in a highly-coordinated fashion, of course (pun somewhat intended) – giving the audience members a close-up view of the clothes. The artificial grass the blocks sit on also helps take the edge off the otherwise militaristic order of the space, making it seem more reminiscent of a park or a picnic, in line with the golf-inspired outfits of the collection.

Issey Miyake, “The Wind”, 2007, Paris

You probably won’t think wind and fashion necessarily go hand-in-hand. Sure, they help make models look fantastic…but only when they’re positioned right. After all, one small breeze could practically spell wardrobe malfunction, depending on the design/material of your outfit. So it was definitely a surprise when Dai Fujiwara of Issey Miyake chose to team up with Sir James Dyson – yes, that Dyson – to create a giant wind-machine for the presentation of his collection back in Paris Fashion Week ’07. In fact, if you listen carefully to the video, you can hear the faint mechanical whirring of the wind machine. Those seemingly independently-moving wind tubes definitely take the cake this round; not only does the wind help emphasise the collection itself, the direction and shape of the tubes ensures the complete harmony of the space – everything points towards the runway, guiding your gaze towards the models.

The Futuristic Rihanna x Dior Collection Is Out Of This World

Rihanna’s never stopping now, is she? Following her debut in Dior’s spring 2015 “Secret Garden” campaign, RiRi has went on for a second collaboration with the luxury label to design a range of futuristic-looking sunglasses.

RIHANNA_BLUE
RIHANNA_GOLD

Released just last month, the collection, aptly named “Rihanna”, features a sleek, metallic frames, reminiscent of those you’ve seen in Star Trek. The sunglasses are beautiful to say the least, but with its futuristic accents and reflective frames, we’d think you won’t be needing any other accessories to complement the look. These will easily make a bold statement on their own. With a combination of Rihanna’s badassery and Dior’s signature eyewear archives, we get a style that’s both luxurious and unique. As you might already have guessed, the collection has been wildly sold, despite its hefty price tag. But since it’s Rihanna, the hype is definitely warranted.
And finally, we get a closer look at the highly-lauded collection in a series of GIFS of Rihanna werkin’ it, as usual.
