Here's What's Happening This Weekend

Cornetto Dance Revival

Freestyle Segment

Alright, this one goes out to all the Selena Gomez fans – Cornetto is giving fans one last chance to win exclusive Cornetto-Selena Gomez merchandise, and Category 1 tickets to her Revival Tour concert, happening this month. The catch? You’ve got to dance your butt off to prove you’re a worthy fan.
Take on the Cornetto Dance Revival Machine, a para para-esque dance machine that rewards you with free Cornetto ice cream for dancing for 60 seconds. But keep your fingers and toes crossed that you’re one of the lucky three to receive an exclusive Golden Lidded ice cream – dispensed only from the dance machine, and your literal golden ticket to meeting Sel herself. Only three coveted Golden Lids remain, each entitling the winner to a pair of Category 1 tickets, plus a Meet & Greet pass. Still, if you’d rather keep the dynamic fangirling to the privacy of your bedroom, there’s one last day to take part in Cornetto’s Instagram contest. Simply design your most creative Instagram post using at least six Cornetto-Selena lids (well, you’d better be quite the fan to down six Cornettos), tag @CornettoSG and #CornettoDanceRevival, and submit by 6pm on Friday, 8 July – to stand a chance to win Cat 1 concert tickets. The results will be announced at Orchard Cineleisure, 4pm the next day; good luck, Selenators.

If you’ve ever wanted to get into the minds of our island’s literary minds, now’s your chance. Prominent Singaporean writers Koh Jee Leong, Alfian Sa’at, and Ovidia Yu are setting aside time at the National Gallery to read from their works, and share personal anecdotes on their experiences with overseas readers, editors, and publishers. Between them, the writers cover genres from fiction to poetry, to drama, crime stories, and even children’s writing. And because it’s a no-brainer how challenging it is to make an impact with Singaporean literature beyond the country, expect some pretty intense speaking on the matter – which will likely prove eye-opening for lit buffs and anyone interested in the local writing scene.

Time: 7pm – 9pm
Venue: The Glass Room, National Gallery Supreme Court Wing, Level 4, Mezzanine

The Case For Organic Cotton

Cotton really is the most common material when it comes to clothing, and given that we wear so much of it on a daily basis, it’s about time we put more thought into the kind of cotton we’re allowing to fill our wardrobes. MUJI’s ahead of us on this, as the brand has already been making its clothes out of top-quality organic cotton, while keeping prices more than fair. No reason not to switch to organic cotton now.

It’s a material that’s nothing short of necessary, and is surely the one that occupies the most significant amount of space in your wardrobe: cotton, the most ubiquitous material in these tropical climes. Versatile enough to be made into that soft tee you’ve been sleeping in for years, to your favourite shift dress that can be so easily dressed up or down. If we had to choose to live in one material for the rest of our lives, cotton would definitely be our pick.
And that’s why we appreciate how MUJI is putting so much effort into their cotton – it’s completely organic, which means they are grown only in cotton fields that haven’t used a single drop of chemicals in the cultivation process for at least three years. Instead, the farmers have devised an all-natural way of keeping the pests away: growing ladies’ fingers and sunflowers nearby to lure insects there, and spraying ground-up garlic and herbs on the crops to disinfect them. As if all that wasn’t enough effort already, ripe cotton is only harvested by human hands, which means yes, the farmers pluck the cotton fruit one by one.
Why go to all the effort if the result doesn’t differ vastly from non- organic cotton? To MUJI, it’s simple: it’s about doing things the right way, and that means not harming the environment and the living creatures that inhabit it. It’s a philosophy we can all afford to get behind.

cotton pieces

With everything that goes into producing organic cotton, it’s only right that brands will charge a premium for it. But MUJI has won our hearts by bucking this trend and incorporating organic cotton into their apparel line without heftier price tags. All the reason we need to stock up on their polo dresses and short-sleeved shifts in neutral shades and classic patterns, for the days when there’s just no brain space for coordinating our tops and bottoms. But even the separates go with anything, with the crew neck tees in flattering cuts, and stretch shorts that have an entirely casual vibe, yet no trace of sloppiness. Which all means that yes, you should be filling your wardrobe with multiple pieces of the same design in different colours and patterns – and since they’re all made of the good organic stuff, there’s hardly a reason to feel guilty for shopping.

MUJI Organic Cotton range, $12.90 to $49. Available at MUJI stores and on muji.com.sg.

TV's Most Fashionable Female characters

There are endless American TV shows we are currently binging on, and especially so when there is a large variety of great shows readily available now. So what makes a good show? The casting, plot or the character developments? We’d say all – but we also can’t help but pay special attention to the characters’ dressing as well; because let’s face it, it’s not just about fashion here, it’s really about how their individual styles represent their unique personalities. So kudos to all costume and set designers out there, but we’ve wrapped up some of our personal favourite female style icons on TV. And trust us, it was a tough choice to make.

1. Alice Vaughan from The Catch

Other than being a fiercely successful corporate private investigator, Alice also dresses as brilliantly as she is. We’re always impressed by the way she handles herself even in the worst situations possible – and how she manages to do so with a stunning lip colour, signature false lashes and gorgeous hair.

2. Cookie from Empire

Images from facebook.com/EmpireFOX.

What a strange name, we all thought when we first caught Empire. But okay, Cookie’s definitely as unique and sassy as her name already suggests. After being in prison for 17 years, Cookie returns to find that her husband, a former drug dealer, has turned their family business into a successful entertainment business. Being deprived of their success, Cookie’s determined to get her fair share of wealth and revenge; in the form of loud animal prints, crazy fur coats and funky accessories. Even though we’ll admit that we honestly won’t wear any of these flamboyant outfits, Cookie’s got the attitude and guts to take on the entire world with just her wardrobe alone.

3. Serena van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl

Our all-time favourite fashion icon throughout television history – S. Aside from the obvious queen B, Serena’s fashion style is considerably more timeless and sleek. It’s no surprise though, set in the Upper East Side, these upper-class adolescents were blessed with wealth and a ridiculous wardrobe. We spent most our teenage years having our self-esteem taking huge plunges whenever we caught Serena sashaying around like a true beauty queen; glittering dresses, adorable winter coats and her iconic school uniform (damn we need those knee-high socks). And that blonde hair! Her relationship with Nate! Her closeness with Chuck! We would have died to be Serena. Ugh. But sadly, let’s admit it – our wardrobes will never be as posh as Serena, ever.

4. Gloria Pritchett from Modern Family

via GIPHY

Feisty and strong-headed, Gloria is known for her loud voice and attitude. It’s not surprisingly that she’s always seen in fitting dresses and loud prints, reminiscent of her eager efforts to be noticeable. We especially love her always on fleek makeup, her dangle earrings, sky high stilettos and plunging necklines.

5. Donna Paulsen from Suits

Image from facebook.com/SUITSonUSA.

Arguably the best secretary around, Donna’s not only the wittiest and most sarcastic one in the office (other than Harvey), she’s also always sophisticatedly dressed – making corporate fashion seem more stylish than it actually is. With her iconic structured dresses, bandage skirts and crisp blazers, Donna kills it in the office even if it’s already late at night – because the lawyers in Suits don’t ever seem to leave the office at all.

Feature: Drag Queen-Inspired Beauty

Beat that face – that’s a phrase borrowed from RuPaul’s Drag Race, one of our favourite guilty pleasures: eight seasons (and counting) of watching established drag queen RuPaul, the show’s host and mentor, put drag queen contestants against one another over various challenges in a bid to be crowned “America’s Next Drag Superstar”. And “beating” your face isn’t as painful as it implies: it’s actually drag lingo for applying the perfect amount of makeup in a continually dabbing motion, to achieve a flawless finish. The show has opened up a whole new world of beauty for us, and we’ve realised that there’s plenty we can learn from drag queens – they truly are makeup experts. Here, we’ve gathered what we’ve learnt and the tips we’ve picked up from the RuPaul contestants, to get you looking as fierce as they do.

She's Electric: LINE Stickers

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt in this age of social media, it’s that resistance is futile – particularly when it comes to
the sending and sharing of cute stickers. They may have taken over Facebook, and are slowly in ltrating Snapchat, but our most lasting impression of cyber stickers goes all the way back to the mecca of stickers: LINE. And now that LINE’s Singapore Creators Market is properly up and running (and freshly two years old), it’s even possible for everyday folk
to personally contribute to the sticker frenzy; plus make a few quick bucks at that. We had a chat with two of the creators behind some of the island’s top-selling stickers,Dira Gana Mahata and Cheng Yu Chao from Cherry Credits, to find out just how endearing sticker creating really is.

The Two New Vans Collabs You Need To Know About

So you’re probably already familiar with Vans: if you don’t already own a pair (or two), then at least one of your friends certainly will. Which is why this week, we’re bringing you not one, but two new Vans releases, hot and fresh off the press. We can already hear the stampede of sneakerheads in the distance.

Vans x DABSMYLA
To bring a punch of colour and quirky sketches to the renowned brand, Vans has teamed up with DABSMYLA, the LA-based brainchild of an Australian street artist couple. The dynamic husband and wife duo are behind numerous beautiful murals that have decorated the globe, from Rio de Janeiro, London and Detriot, and they’ve also been credited for their larger than life set design and work for the 2015 MTV Movie Awards.

Channeling their intrinsically vibrant approach to art, DABSMYLA have created a graphic print to outfit three women’s Classic footwear styles. Their designs for the Sk8-Hi Slim, Authentic and Classic Slip-on all feature a peeking fox alongside a broken matchstick and apple core, creating a unique print that exemplifies the artist duos theory of combining found elements to create something that is uniquely their own.

Of course, Vans and DABSMYLA haven’t left us hanging with that. The collaboration also features the duo’s kitschy art and designs on wearable pieces including a raglan style t-shirt, hoodie and tee dress, with accessories ranging from a backpack, trucker hat and canoodle socks. So alright, okay, just take our money already!

Vans x Kyle Walker: Kyle Walker Pro
vanskylewalker

This one’s for the skaters out there. Oklahoma-native Kyle Walker has been making aerodynamic waves in the skating scene this year, having recently earned mindblowing video parts and a newly minted pro board. Joining Vans, the skateboarder is introducing the all-new Kyle Walker Pro, which features Vans’ revolutionary Wafflecup technology.
vans2

For unfamiliar fans out there, the Vans Wafflecup is designed to deliver the best of both worlds — bringing the support and stability of a cupsole shoe without sacrificing any of the boardfeel and grip – for which legendary vulcanized Vans skate shoes are revered. Walker’s shoe in particular is designed for maximum comfort, with a thicker insole, tongue and a more cushioned sole; but don’t let those design elements fool you, it still “skates great right out of the box”, he proclaims. Sadly, the red version of the shoes aren’t available on our shores, but we all live for that monochromatic look anyway, right?

Vans x DABSMYLA, $89-109 for footwear, $69-169 for Apparel and Accessories, available from 15 July at Vans Stores in Ion Orchard, Bugis+, Jurong Point and Raffles City. Vans.com.sg
Vans Kyle Walker Pro, $109, available in all colours (except red) from 9 July at all Vans Pro Skate retailers. Vans.com/kylewalker

#ThrowbackThursday: The Wacky Sitcoms Of Our Childhood

Ahh, sitcoms. Whether you like it or not, you probably grew up with a handful of really strange TV shows, and sitcoms can definitely get pretty crazy. While it’s frequently disputed just how “live” these shows really are, those audience laughs sure convinced us back then. This week, we take a trip down memory lane as we revisit the wacky sitcoms we grew up with, and ponder to ourselves, how exactly did the pitch for these shows go?
*****
All That

Frankly, we’re surprised the dictionary definition of “wacky” doesn’t include a picture of the All That cast as reference. Presented as a kind of “Saturday Night Live for kids”, the show had numerous sketches which parodied real television programmes, such as Judge Trudy (as a parody of Judge Judy) with her dancing lobsters. Other famous sketches include Everyday French with Pierre Escargot, featuring Kenan Thomson in a very foamy bathtub and flippers, The Inconvenience Store and of course, Good Burger. Is it any wonder that Kenan & Kel got their own spinoff movie? Oh, and of course, the show is where Amanda Bynes got her start out before moving on to her own sketch-based show. Ah, where do the good ol’ days go…

The Suite Life Of Zack and Cody

Ah, Dylan and Cole Sprouse. Undeniably two of the more level-headed celebrities out there – well, as level headed as celebs can get, anyway. The show’s concept is pretty wild when you think about it; we doubt anyone would be able to get away with half the stuff Zack and Cody did, but then again, not every hotel has a Mr. Moseby. The show only ran for three seasons, although the second season had 39 episodes, which is pretty long for a sitcom. We’re glad most of the cast didn’t spiral out of control as many young stars tend to do, though. Maybe the craziness of the show was cathartic for the actors, somehow. The show also got a spin-off series with The Suite Life On Deck, but of course, nostalgia will always make us day that the original series is better (it is.)

Drake and Josh

Wow, we didn’t even know the opening theme had a music video all on its own…but hey, we’re not complaining. The premise of Drake and Josh wasn’t too weird, but boy, Nickelodeon sure loves some really odd characters. From the ever-scheming, definitely-probably-evil Megan, to the really weird staff at the movie theatre, even Oprah-loving Josh himself, the show’s characters were undeniably colourful, to say the least. Drake and Josh definitely captured the type of teenaged American life that made us all grow up thinking wow, don’t they ever study? Admittedly, self-proclaimed slacker Drake was there to point out why we rarely saw a number of characters hitting the books, so we’ll give that point to them…but still.

That’s So Raven

Okay, admit it, you know all the lyrics to this theme song. It’s hard to meet someone who has no idea what That’s So Raven is, and re-watching this show, we still can’t find any reason to dislike it. As one of the few African-American-centric sitcoms on Disney, we like to think that That’s So Raven helped present a truly diverse cast of characters, and also spread some pretty important messages about identity and body image. And yes, we’d still love the power to gaze into the future, even if it’s a little out of context…

Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd

Bet you didn’t expect to see this on the list! But with August ’round the corner, we can’t help but show some local TV love. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any clips of the show’s actual opening, but we figure you already remember that iconic shaker(?) noise and the lazy guitar plucking. As one of the first few Singaporean sitcoms, there was just something fun about seeing characters based off known stereotypes and inter-generational family squabbles that we definitely identified with. Hearing a Singaporean audience laughing was undeniably pleasant, too. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for a re-run.

En Route: Thailand

Pursuit of Happiness
It’s a lofty dream that’s written right into america’s declaration of independence, and yet, something we still yearn for, in the littlest of everyday actions, while spending time with our loved ones, and, if time and money allows, travelling to see the world. you don’t have to empty your wallets to go on far-flung journeys though – exploring Southeast Asia’s quite an eye-opener too, as we found out when we embarked on a week-long trip to Thailand, particularly to Samui, Chiang Mai and the hilly regions of Mae Hong Son. Between these, there’s more than enough natural beauty, culture, adventure, and good food to be pleased about. Let’s just say, Thailand’s not called “the land of smiles” for nothing.

Everyone's Favourite Superga Sneakers Get Sporty

Most people aren’t aware that Superga has a pretty extensive history in shoemaking, especially since the brand only arrived in Singapore just six years ago. We should give credit where its due because this Italian brand of shoes has been around since 1911; long before Superga entered our lives and blessed us with hordes of casual shoes to match our equally casual tees. In 1925, the original white 2750 shoes with vulcanised rubber soles were born. Superga was doing well, and continued this specialised production of high quality footwear well into the years before diversifying into new collections, which included a line of sports shoes with its own special logo in the 1970s.
Superga Sport was responsible in creating these sports shoes with technical attributes for a number of disciplines like volleyball, soccer, basketball and of course, tennis. All the shoes under this label bore a swallow tail logo on it, a visual that’s taken from the main Superga Sport logo. This year, Superga will be reintroducing this label, with a focus on one particular silhouette – the “Panatta” model, which was named after European tennis superstar Adriano Panatta, who loved the shoe. His father was the caretaker of the Tennis Club Parioli, where Panatta picked up the sport. He quickly became a successful European junior player before turning pro a few years later.
Superga has worked together with Panatta himself to launch this unisex collection. The reborn Superga Sport collection retains all of its original features, which includes a cotton upper, custom ap with the champion’s name, vulcanised natural rubber sole and the swallow’s tail action logo with leather details, in six different styles and colour variations of navy, dark bordeaux and military green.
Superga Sport “Panatta”, $129.90. Available at Superga outlets (Wheelock Place #B2-04 and VivoCity #02-73/75) and online at superga.com.sg.

Why Bioderma Is Our Bathroom Shelf Staple

As we write this, a 500ml bottle of the Bioderma Sensibio H2O – the special edition one with the pump dispenser, might we add – sits next to us. It’s become an absolute desk necessity, for all the times when we go a little too crazy swatching all the new makeup colours that pass through our desks, and then have to wipe our hands clean of all the multicoloured streaks; also for the evenings when we have to wipe black smudges from under our eyes, when that day’s mascara and eyeliner prove to be not that smudgeproof after all.
It’s a precious bottle, and we dread the day that we pump the last of the micellar water, mostly because this pump bottle version is a limited edition, and it’s no longer stocked in stores. But on our bathroom shelves, there’s always a bottle of Bioderma; you might have heard lots of people wax lyrical about the endless merits of this humble scentless, colourless micellar water by now, and we’ve also grown to love and rely on it enough to make regular trips to the drugstores to ensure our supply never runs dry.

micellar waters

If you’re still not entirely sure exactly why people love this so much, it’s simply because it… works. There are many micellar waters on the market by now, but Bioderma was the pioneer, and remains the market leader because the products have continually proven that they’re able to perform. The way the formulas are made allow them to be suitable even on the most sensitive of skin (and we’re talking skin that’s really sensitive here, not the kind that just breaks out with the occasional use of the wrong product); yet with one swipe of a cotton pad, waterproof mascara and eyeliner and multiple foundation layers come off cleanly, with zero fuss. That’s what makeup removers should be about.
Our choice of Bioderma H2O has always been the Sensibio, which is made for sensitive skin that might manifest in redness or sensations of heat and tightness, and is often dry. Not that we suffer from any particular skin sensitivities, but we find that it suits our combination skin best. For especially dry skin, there’s the Hydrabio range, and on the other end of the spectrum, the Sébium range for oily and blemish-prone complexions.
bioderma range

Each range consists of skincare necessities other than micellar waters as well, such as toners, moisturisers and eye creams. If it’s a serious skin condition in question, the Atoderm range is made for extremely dry and atopic (i.e. hypersensitive) skin; and for the all-important suncare, the Photoderm products make up an entire suncreen range for the face and body, and go up to SPF 100, handy if you’re very, very fair, or suffer from skin pigmentation problems.
photoderm

Essentially, Bioderma is a brand that we know deep down that our skin can trust. This is thanks to how the formulations are designed with ingredients that are as close to what already exist naturally in the cells as much as possible, so you’re not feeding the skin anything it doesn’t already have. Over time, the skin’s natural barrier is also strengthened with regular use. We’ve gone through enough skincare mishaps to know that an absolutely trustworthy brand doesn’t come around all that often, and that’s why Bioderma hasn’t budged from our bathroom shelves through all the beauty trends that come and go – we just wish that Sensibio H2O pump bottle wasn’t limited edition.

Bioderma products are available at selected Guardian and Watsons stores, and Robinsons. bioderma.sg

Wake Up To A Good Hair Day With These Overnight Hair Treatments

Waking up to a good hair day doesn’t have to come only by a rare combination of favourable circumstances and sheer good luck – just keep one of these overnight hair treatments on your bedside table, and having a good hair day every day doesn’t seem so impossible after all. No nasty pillow stains too, promise.

Essential Night Care Milk
Your pillow might be causing damage to your hair, which is a real sad truth, because it’s tragic that such an important part of our bed might be the culprit behind a bad hair day. Pillow friction might cause frizz, so the Essential Night Care Milk coats hair cuticles with a layer of protection, in a milky formula that won’t leave greasy stains on your pillow. Not everyone can invest in silk pillowcases, so we’re glad we have this alternative.
$11.90, available at Guardian and Watsons.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Night Cap Overnight Perfector
This treatment is ambitious: it promises not just a good hair day, but a good hair week after you go to sleep with this on. Hair that’s coarse and rough will benefit from the technology that leaves hair both smoother and shinier, plus there are amino acids in it to let your hair better stand up to daily (bad) habits like heat styling and prolonged UV exposure. It can be applied on both damp and dry hair, and you can choose to style it straight or wash it out with shampoo in the morning.
$36, available at Sephora.

Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Overnight Recovery
There’s still a bit of a wait before this hits Sephora shelves in October, but if you’re into the Percy & Reed’s floral-scented hair treatments, you’ll want to try this overnight version, made with natural proteins that soften the hair and improve its ability to stay moisturised, and to shield itself from frizz-causing humidity. Apply it on dry hair from roots to tips, and you can still shampoo in the morning, while skipping out on conditioner.  If you’ve no time to do anything about your hair in the mornings, just work it in before your workout. Easy.
$42, available at Sephora from October 2016.

Phyto Secret De Nuit
Since sleeping masks work on skin cells while they’re in an optimum recovery mode at night, hair cells are really the same. This overnight hair cream is made with potent antioxidants like black orchid extract and grape-derived compounds, together with ceramides and essential fatty acids to intensely hydrate and strengthen hair. It’s powerful, so just apply a walnut-sized amount on the hair length and ends before bed. This one is pillow-safe as well.
$79.90, available at Guardian and Watsons.

This Works Sleep Plus Hair Elixir
As a brand that has so many products dedicated to getting us a better night’s sleep, we’re not all that surprised that This Works managed to come up with a hair treatment that helps you to both sleep better, and wake up with great hair. Botanical oils like argan, jojoba and baobab nourish the hair, while your natural sleep movements activate the gradual release of the brand’s proprietary Deep Sleep fragrance, which smells of lavender, vetivert and chamomile, to lull you into slumber.
$50, available at Sephora.

Ouai Haircare Hair Oil
Ouai is a sleek haircare brand hitting Sephora stores from end September, and we’re already excited about getting our hands on the effortlessly cool products in minimalist packaging. There’s plenty to try in the range, but we zoomed in on this Hair Oil that treats split ends and smooths over frizz, while leaving a high-gloss finish. It’s an everyday hair oil, but can also be used as an overnight hydrating hair mask, to be rinsed out in the morning.
$42, available at Sephora from 29 September 2016.

#44 For Art’s Sake

We celebrate the arts in our For Art’s Sake issue, with local actress Oon Shu An as our magical cover star. Also inside: we speak to six prominent personalities from the Singapore theatre scene, drag queen-inspired beauty, and fashion pieces that are quite literally works of art.

Check Out OPPA Chicken For Korean Fried Chicken Under $20

Here’s the deal about Korean fried chicken – we can never get enough. Flavourful sauces and marinade, the right amount of crunch, and most importantly, spice done right; what’s to hate? Which is exactly why we’ll never tire of discovering a new hole-in-the-wall KFC joint, even with multiple additions joining the scene everyday.
Our latest obsession: OPPA Chicken, a cosy, homegrown café founded and headed by Singaporean Debbie Wu, who first conceived the idea on a leisure trip to Seoul. Determined to bring home a piece of the culture she’d fallen in love with, she returned to Korea for two months to work in the hot kitchens and learn the recipes firsthand from local chefs. Today, she’s OPPA Chicken’s head chef – and the sole maker of the secret sauces for all the chicken dishes.

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset  Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Tucked along the bustling South Bridge Road, OPPA is all neon signboards and funky Korean aesthetic (think wooden-industrial style interior). It’s a great central location, which might explain the daily office-working lunch crowd; even more so now that OPPA’s introduced its newest offerings – quick, affordable OPPA One-Bowls.

Created with the time-starved office worker in mind, the One-Bowls are essentially an all-in-one set meal you can chow down under a time (and budget) crunch. Joining in the fusion food trend, the meals come in a wide variety of noodles or rice (ie. carbs) accompanied with a piece of chicken (ie. protein) in your choice of flavour. And at under $8 a bowl, that’s crazily affordable. We ended up with the traditional Korean Japchae Noodles ($6.90) and Kimchi Fried Rice ($6.90), both with sweet Yangyum chicken on the side.
The Kimchi Fried Rice was fragrant without being overly sour – great for those less keen on the sharp tang of Korean kimchi; but our hearts were won over by the Japchae noodles – stir-fried sweet potato glass noodles that were as springy and chewy in the mouth as they were tasty.

Shoutout to the OPPA Topokki ($6.90), a generous serving of everyone’s favourite chewy rice cakes, which we ordered at Level 3 spiciness, upon Debbie’s coaxing. It’s the restaurant’s standout dish, but in short: we died. Be warned that the spice is deceptively delayed; at first we swallowed it down confidently, pleasantly surprised at our own tolerance as Debbie’s eyes widened in horror at the possibility that OPPA’s prized spicy topokki might have finally met its match. And then it hits you, right at the back of your throat, and you think you might never eat again. Wash it down with the Fruity Soda Pop ($4.50) – at least afterwards we could taste again.

But of course, OPPA is first and foremost a chicken joint after all, which is probably why we’ll be returning soon just to gorge on the chicken. The Yangnyum was sweet and light, easily binge-able the next time you crave a good saucy KFC. We also had to try the chicken highlights – OPPA’s best-selling Honey Garlic and Flaming Yangnyum chicken ($11.90 for 8 winglets, $17.90 for 12). If you’re a fan of sweet flavours, go for the Honey Garlic; though our personal favourite was the Flaming Yangnyum, which was all kinds of YAS with the perfect spicy kick. The chicken, which also comes in Original and Soy Garlic flavours, is available in Small (6pcs) to Large (18pcs) sizes – so you can share, or have it all by yourself.

And when you’re done with your entire, finger-licking meal, don’t forget to wipe down with the cheeky towelettes – “extra safe”, if you know what we mean. All in all, definitely a place to check out, whether you’re on a budget, or looking for a new favourite hangout to splurge on fried chicken. We hear new items will be coming to the menu soon too, like individually packaged watermelon soju – perfect for pairing with your chix.

A Review Of Billion Dollar Brows Products

I’ll admit that I don’t spend much time and effort maintaining my brows, hence I wouldn’t know if my brows are perfectly symmetrical or not; not to mention if the arches flatter my face shape. So I was pretty excited to try out Billion Dollar Brows’ products that included a shaping kit, brow pencil and a contouring kit. Here’s how it went:

The Brow Buddy Kit
A first of its kind, Billion Dollar Brows calls this the “ultimate brow shaping tool”, meant to help us achieve the perfect arches.

Honestly, it was a pretty simple tool to use – even though it looked daunting initially. By placing the Brow Buddy against my face with my nose in the center, it showed my where my brows were supposed to start. My brows were a little off – but I followed the tool and drew a line using the white pencil that was included. Next, to find the arch. I extended the tool until the prongs were in line with my iris, and drew another line. The last part was to find the end of my brows, which was supposed to line up with the outer corners of my eyes. By connecting the three points established earlier, I found the outline of my brows.

Since I get my brows tweezed professionally quite often, my original brow shape and the outline I drew were quite similar – something I was rather proud of. The Brow Buddy will definitely be a handy tool if you’re not willing to spend on getting your brows done monthly, you can tweeze the sparse hairs that fall outside the lines drawn and you’ll easily get a pair of symmetrical brows.

Universal Brow Pencil
Meant to be an universal shade, the brow pencil promised to flatter any skin tone and any hair colour. The brown was a little light for my usual preference, considering I have dark brown hair – I would have preferred something darker. What I liked was that it was an automatic pencil, which is great news for lazy folks like me who find sharpening to be an absolute chore. It’s also attached to a spoolie brush at the end, essential for naturally looking brows.

I would say that the colour payoff is great, but the pencil was a little blunt. For those who prefer a precise application, it’s always better to get a brow pencil that can be sharpened.

60 Seconds to Contour Brows Kit
A special brow contouring kit? Seems unnecessary, considering how we often just use a highlighter that does a pretty decent job. This kit includes a dual-sided pencil (concealer and highlighter on each end), a sharpener and a smudge brush.

Unlike the name suggests, it sure took me more than 60 seconds to apply the concealer and highlighter above and beneath my browline respectively. I also encountered difficulty trying to blend the thick concealer (props to its rich texture, though) with the brush. Other than finding the whole contouring a hassle, my arches did look more defined, mostly due to the shimmering highlighter that did give my brows a lift. Well, let’s be honest – this can easily be done with your personal concealer, highlighter and a blending brush. Even though there was a significant definition, I would suggest to skip this step, unless you have the time and effort to spare.

Left side without contouring; right side with contouring.

6 Official Soundtracks That Could Be Better Than Their Films

It’s no secret that sound is probably one of the most powerful elements when it comes to movies. Just try watching a horror film – or any film, for that matter – with the sound off. Even silent films were frequently accompanied with live music during screenings. In recent years, iconic soundtracks and orchestrations have also helped cement the flick’s status in film history. Everyone knows the horn blast of Inception, the tinkling electronica theme of Paprika, or even the five-note sequence of Close Encounters of The Third Kind. Heck, there’s a reason everyone knows about composer Hans Zimmer. With these facts in mind, we’ve compiled six official soundtracks that are underrated at best. You might not agree that they could be better than their respective films, but trust us, they take you on an adventure all on their own.
******
Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)

This is one of those moments when we’re sure the film is definitely on-par with the book, considering it’s had to condense six volumes of graphic novels into one movie. Look no further than the title sequence to see that the film is totally kick-ass, and it’s soundtrack is equally flawless. With most of Sex Bob-Omb’s (yes, that’s really their name) music written by Beck himself, featuring other tracks by Canadian band royalty Metric and Broken Social Scene, it’s hard not to have this soundtrack on loop for days.

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

While it’s been panned by critics for being more of a gore/slasher flick than inciting genuine scares – were you really expecting anything less from an American “horror” flick? – the soundtrack for Jennifer’s Body is a pretty interesting mix of bands. From All Time Low, to Cute Is What We Aim For, to, of course, Panic! At The Disco, we wouldn’t be surprised if the soundtrack helped generate most of the hype around the film (minimal shade here). There’s also special tracks like Teenagers by Paramore’s Hayley Williams, and even an electronic twist with Little Boots’ New In Town.

Treasure Planet (2002)

Pulling a major throwback here, why don’t we talk more about Disney’s animated film, Treasure Planet? The film was nominated for an Academy Award alongside Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, for crying out loud! Jim’s theme, performed by Goo Goo Doll’s frontman John Rzeznik, is undeniably one of the most perfect character themes of all time. We dare you not to cry during the flashback scene when this song comes on. We dare you. But aside from I’m Still Here, the orchestration alone is undeniably beautiful; as expected of Disney, of course. You can practically feel the surge of a sense of adventure from 12 Years Later and beyond.

카트(Cart) (2014)

Okay, okay, you’re probably wondering what this is doing here. But make no mistake about Cart; while it may feature a K-Pop idol, it’s much more than that. The film promises stellar acting and a moving story based off of real-life events. For those of you who loathe the stereotype of the Asian damsel-in-distress, don’t miss this film. Featuring an almost entirely-female cast under the direction of Boo Ji-Young (hooray for female directors!), the story perfectly balances out the tensions of work, family, and justice that the characters face. And while this title track is definitely not one to miss out on, the orchestration of the film is surprisingly delightful, too.

Bandslam (2009)

Undeniably one of the most underrated coming-of-age/battle of the bands-type flicks of all time, we can’t think of a better way to bring this film back, especially with all the David Bowie references (R.I.P.). But this film definitely does his legacy justice, presenting a story about growing up that perfectly captures the bittersweet moments of teenhood. It’s no surprise, then, that the accompanying soundtrack sounds as good as an actual album release; even Vanessa Hudgens manages to shed her squeaky-clean High School Musical persona for a more multi-dimensional character. The soundtrack also features bands like The Velvet Underground and Honor Society – the latter’s track, Where Are You Now is a perfect flashback song, if anything.

Pacific Rim (2013)

It’s hard not to love anything by director Guillermo Del Toro, especially Pacific Rim. But while we all wait (impatiently) for the sequel, the film’s score is undeniably badass, with a fusion of rock and orchestration. Composer Ramin Djawadi has undeniably created one of the most epic themes of all time; even though there’s no available video for this track, you can almost see the Jaeger pilots suiting up and powering up the giant machine in front of your eyes. While it’s difficult to pin-point the precise moment you should listen to this soundtrack – let’s face it, it’s probably a little too epic for a bus or train ride – it’s definitely perfect for helping yourself getting amped up. So hey, maybe this is the wake-up alarm you’ve been waiting for.
