INTERVIEW: No More Pastelpower, Cherie Ko’s Part of Noir-Rock Duo TOMGIRL Now

Sweet, dreamy and twee — that’s everything we loved about electro-pop project Pastelpower, and now, everything the musician behind it, Cherie Ko, is not. Especially when she’s now one half of dark noir-rock band TOMGIRL.

After all, it’s about challenging our expectations here, which is exactly what the 25-year-old is doing: shedding her past identity and embracing a far more edgier, perhaps more raw one. “I didn’t want it to be pretty. I wanted it to be strong, abrasive, and fearless. Perhaps even reckless, in a way,” she says of her new direction. Not that innocent then.

Together with Australia-based musician Ted Doré, the duo embarked on TOMGIRL, a project that aims to blaze a trail, igniting with heavy guitar riffs and pounding beats layered with sultry vocals that draw you in, all of which you can find on their self-titled debut album, and their first single ‘Darker Now’.

Then again, Ko professes that it’s as much about creating striking visual imagery, personas really, which evoke our favourite noir thrillers, femme fatales, shady liaisons and all. The music video for the band’s first single ‘Darker Now’, helmed by director Jacky Lee (@TheBoyWhoCriedAction) and director of photography Kelvin Chew, is definitely all that, a stunning piece with plenty of neon lights and moody cinematography, of two mysterious lovers running away from a crime they might or might not have committed.

Who’s darker now? We’ll let the girl speak for herself:

TOMGIRL-PHOTO03-PHOTO-BY-CHERLYNN-LIAN

You guys went over to Melbourne to film the music video – how was that like?

The shoot was really fun! It was over a span of one week, and we went to a lot of bars with neon signs because we wanted that neo-noir vibe, and a lot of abandoned spots as well. One really cool place was this abandoned warehouse, this really huge space where it used to be a garment factory, but now the whole area’s covered in graffiti. We found old film reels too, so we just took them and ran around the whole place with it – Ted even wrecked a wall! We also rented a motel room, shifted all the beds around and put in our own lights, and got like a smoke machine to create the right atmosphere.

Why did you and Ted decide to release ‘Darker Now’ as your first single? Is there something significant about the song?

Ted and I met at Laneway Festival Singapore, this was two years ago, and we immediately bonded over shoegaze music, 60s girl groups, and a lot of cult films. So he asked whether I wanted to jam and write some songs together, and we did. We went through many phases, like we wrote this shoegaze song but didn’t really feel it, but the night before he flew back to Melbourne, we wrote ‘Darker Now’ and I recorded my vocal parts. It wasn’t really put together then, but only pieced together when he was over at Australia. When he sent me the track, we were like “wow, this really could be something!”. ‘Darker Now’ was what cemented us as TOMGIRL, to want to create an entire album out of this newfound identity. And this wouldn’t have been possible on our own because it’s quite a close collaboration.

How would you describe this new identity?

It’s a fusing of our two different styles; Ted is really into old-school rock ‘n’ roll, and I’m into shoegaze, electro-pop stuff, so when it came together, it was a merging of these two worlds. And that’s what TOMGIRL is about – it’s masculinity meeting feminity, the yin to his yang and vice versa. It’s really about balancing all that.

Speaking of balancing, Ted’s based in Australia – so how do you guys collaborate especially when it comes to songwriting?

A lot of our songs were written over the Internet. He would send me a guitar riff, then I’d build on it, add in my vocals or add in sections to other parts of the song, and whenever I have an idea I’d send it over as well. We actually had a lot of loose demos floating about for a while, and we had set our own deadlines to meet, so it was quite nervewrecking as well. When I went to Melbourne in March, half of it wasn’t done yet! But when I got there, everything clicked, we had like an intensive songwriting bootcamp in his basement for one whole week, just writing and recording. It was quite fun to be in that crazy bubble of churning out ideas and songs. We managed to get a lot more of a creative flow because we could bounce ideas off each other.

You’re in a band [Obedient Wives Club] so you know how the collaborative aspect comes together when everyone’s together, but what would you say is an advantage of sending each other stuff over the Internet?

I think having to work apart kinda pushes us as well… It’s quite limiting, because he’ll send me a guitar riff and I have to try my best to interpret it and rework it to make it my own without compromising my style, but I think that’s good because it helped us understand each other’s style a lot more, in a space where we’re apart. We understand each other more with the distance.

TOMGIRL-PHOTO02-PHOTO-BY-CHERLYNN-LIAN

You were previously Pastelpower too, and people know you for it, so why adopt this whole new identity?

Contrary to what people might think, Pastelpower’s really just an exaggerated persona. People have different sides to them, something that we present might not be fully representative of what we feel on the inside, and Pastelpower was an exaggerated part of myself, a dreamy and happy person. I like to see myself as a Russian doll, with many different ‘capsules’, so I would say that Pastelpower’s the topmost layer, but there’s so much more left to show that I haven’t been able to. TOMGIRL’s definitely a huge departure from that.

Was it motivated by something you’ve experienced?

A lot of the songs we wrote were inspired by true events – like ex-es we didn’t like very much! Or, you know, the pent-up emotions over the years, and it felt really cathartic too to be able to unleash whatever we were feeling, whether it’s anger or sadness or hatred, things I couldn’t have done with Pastelpower. I feel TOMGIRL’s more rooted to reality, in a way, because we’re writing about real issues we face. It’s like a development.

Why is this idea of a persona so important for you?

Music is something that transports me to places, that’s why with all my different projects, I like to create that whole journey for the listeners too – visually as well. It’s fun to build a character, kind of like acting, while it’s also a form of art to mould yourself into this character you envision in your mind, right down to the makeup and clothes. I guess it’s also my way of reliving what I enjoyed when I was a kid – I really liked modelling a lot then! My parents had all these home videos of me, like I’d be wearing shades and, like, throw a jacket over my shoulder and all that!

So I guess it’s kind of your Sasha Fierce?

Haha yeah, kinda like that!

TOMGIRL-PHOTO01-PHOTO-BY-YAK

Would you say the persona you take on is a more powerful version of yourself?

Yeah, I feel like my persona’s very different from who I am in real life, but having to take on this role pushes me to be a better version of myself. It’s kinda empowering, and it affirms me that I can be something bigger than myself – that’s a positive thing.

At the same time, what would you say is the thing that remains the same between Pastelpower and TOMGIRL?

It’s probably my love for cult films, just that for Pastelpower I was more inspired by the more romantic films such as French New Wave films, Sofia Coppola films or Edward Scissorhands. For TOMGIRL, it ventures over to the darker side, so I really looked to Tarantino films, anything by Jim Jarmusch, campy horror films as well, and very much 80s inspired ones. I really like Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction, Rose McGowan’s character in The Doom Generation.

Going back to the idea of a persona – rather, an artiste’s persona  do you think it’s something a musician necessarily has to take on? How do you still keep it genuine?

Most artistes I look up to like The Kills, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a strong character about them, but who knows what they’re like in real life! I believe that’s a persona you have to put on and build, I don’t think anyone gets out of bed in the morning and they’re like a rock star. Maybe it’s a form of manipulation, but it’s fun.

Right from the start, our vision for the project stemmed from our own likes. It kind of came naturally, we didn’t have to fake it because we felt that it was a part of us, and we stuck by our artistic integrity. But I think the most important thing is to like what you’re making and enjoy it – then it won’t seem contrived or like a marketing scheme.

You’ve been doing music here for so many years now, have you ever thought about an alternative?

Actually I did marketing previously, but it wasn’t really for me. I feel like we only have our 20s to do what we want to do, and right now, TOMGIRL is my number one priority. I don’t wanna die with any regrets, or think of a backup plan or think what’s gonna happen in five years time. I want to do this the best I can and be proud of myself.

Our Favourite Oils And Their Beauty Benefits

Oils do sound frightening; especially when we spend so much trying to remove the excess oil on our faces. However, we’re talking about natural, raw, organic oils that do have their benefits – and they are much more effective when they’re being used directly, instead of merely just being an ingredient in beauty products. Here are some of the best base oils that can easily be incorporated into your daily skincare regime. Just like other skincare products, its effectiveness are entirely dependent on every individual’s skin and own preferences – so we’ll recommend you to ease into it by conducting a test patch first and remember, moderation is key.

1. Argan oil
Most commonly used in hair treatments, argan oil helps to tame frizz, repair damaged hair and it also gives hair a sheen. Other than hair benefits, it can also be used as a skin moisturiser due to its high vitamin E and fatty acid content. Since it has an antioxidant effect, it effectively helps to restore skin elasticity, leaving your skin feeling soft, smooth and supple. You can massage a few drops of argan oil directly on your face after cleansing; followed by your night cream so that oil absorbs into the skin effectively. Our favourite way to incorporate argan oil in our daily regime is to mix just one or two drops with foundation or any makeup base, bringing us one step closer to having that natural glowy face.
Try: Physician’s Formula Argan Wear™ Ultra-Nourishing Argan Oil, $19.59, sg.iherb.com.

2. Jojoba oil
It’s a miracle oil for the damned T-zone shine that we just can’t hide – especially during flash photos that we can’t run away from during our supposedly fun night outs; until the camera appears, of course. Jojoba oil helps to regulate the skin’s natural production of oil; which is great for those of you ladies who have acne-prone skin. Apply a few drops on your skin as an overnight mask, or as a day moisturiser. Alternatively, jojoba oil works surprisingly well as a natural lip moisturiser as well; just apply a few drops on your chapped lips and you’ll have softer and smoother lips – especially helpful if you’re always wearing matte lipsticks that are extremely drying.
Try: Now Foods Organic Jojoba oil, $27.41, sg.iherb.com.

3. Coconut oil
We know what you’re thinking – coconut oil is technically food. But cold-pressed, raw coconut oil that has been hailed as the miracle must-have for a radiant and healthy-looking skin. On your face, it is a great eye cream (since it’s really hydrating) and it removes make up pretty well; perhaps not as well for your waterproof mascara and eyeliner. For those who aren’t brave enough to slather oil on your face, you can try creating a sugar scrub with just coconut oil ad brown sugar – the oil helps to keep your skin moisturised while the sugar aids in exfoliating dead skin cells; leaving your skin fresh and smooth.
Try: Eco Care Organic Coconut Oil, $25, Sephora.

4. Avocado oil
We all know the smug claim that avocado is “healthy fat” – which isn’t surprisingly considering how many #fitspo Instagram models always have a side of avocado on their plates. With high amount of vitamin E (an antioxidant), it is not only hydrating, but it also helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Another great use of avocado oil is to use it as a leave-in treatment on your hair – it helps to strengthen, moisturise and tame your mane. Also, since it has a mild scent, you wouldn’t need to worry about having strange-smelling hair.
Try: Wild Products Avocado Oil, $32, Sephora.

Ever scrolled wistfully on Instagram, wishing you could somehow get your hands on certain foreign beauty brands the rest of the world seem to be enjoying? We have; which is why we were beyond stoked to stumble upon some of Instagram’s most hyped about drugstore makeup brands, available right here at John Little in Singapore, and at super pocket-friendly prices. Be warned though, that the products on offer are mostly past-season or “older” products – which makes sense, given that even the upscale international beauty brands stocked at Sephora take time to update their offerings. This one elicited the loudest (internal) scream from us; BH Cosmetics has been making waves in the American drugstore beauty scene for years now, thanks to its affordable makeup brushes and dirt cheap eyeshadow palettes. Here, you can find decently pigmented palettes for under $20, along with the usual lipsticks, blushes, and the like.

L.A. Colors

Chances are you can find these occasionally at a pop-up Watsons atrium sale, but for a more permanent alternative, head to John Little to check out L.A. Colors and their incredibly priced makeup. The lipsticks and eyeshadow pencils retail impressively below $10, but we quite fancy the 3D blush-contour palettes – affordable, straightforward, and handy to chuck into your purse for when you’re heading out.

Studio Makeup

Probably the most professionally packaged at the store, the Studio Makeup goodies are all sleek black packaging – and look like they could be easy dupes for MAC. Along with a wide variety of foundation, concealers, and powders available for a range of skin tones, the brand also boasts a large selection of single eyeshadows and eyeshadow palettes. Their most famous product? An all-encompassing Nudes Palette.

Why Lin-Manuel Miranda Should Be Your New Favourite Person

If you’ve been paying attention to American entertainment media recently, you’ll probably have heard about the broadway smash-hit Hamilton, based on the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. While the concept of the musical might sound pretty odd – I know I definitely raised an eyebrow when I heard about it – search up any song (or even the whole soundtrack on Spotify) and you’ll understand why it’s been met with phenomenal success. Drawing inspiration from the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow, Lin-Manuel Miranda has written, composed, and starred in one of the biggest game-changing broadway productions of all time. But you can read all about Hamilton‘s achievements on another day, because we’re here to discuss the man himself, and why he deserves to be your new Favourite Person.
*****
1. He freestyle raps like no other.

Considering the mind-blowing, tongue-twisting raps of Hamilton, it’s hard to expect anything less from Miranda. Yet somehow, with each new video of him delivering a freestyle rap, I find myself with the urge to give a standing ovation of my own every time he’s done.

2. Seriously, it’s insane.

He didn’t even need to deliver a freestyle rap but he did it anyway all in the name of showbiz, and boy, are we grateful. Also, only he could make that costume and wig look dignified (sorry Stephen Colbert, still love you).

3. He cares about his country.

When news broke of Puerto Rico’s debt crisis, John Oliver was, of course, one of the first few hosts to disseminate the info to the public…with Miranda’s help, of course. As the son of Puerto-Rican immigrants, Miranda has spoken openly about how his background helped him identify with Alexander Hamilton as he was writing the musical (Hamilton was orphaned in the Carribean). His love for Puerto Rico is evident in the tone and delivery of his rap; it’s hard not to miss the desperation in his voice when he says “it’s just a hundred miles across”.

4. He knows how to move people with his words.

Following the horrifying massacre at the Pulse club in Orlando, Miranda delivered an undeniably moving speech about his life and the freedom to love, all in the style of a spoken word poem. Arguably one of the most memorable speeches of the night, the amount of thought and sincerity he delivers each time he receives an award are evident of his humility and love for others. As evident from his writing in his musicals, it’s clear that Miranda knows how to move audiences, and we’re glad that he’s using it to spread joy.

5. He did this at the Grammys, okay. The Grammys.

The prospect of delivering a spoken word poem/rap at the Grammys in front of music icons is undeniably terrifying, but that’s exactly how Lin-Manuel Miranda chose to deliver his acceptance speech alongside the cast, as they accepted the award for Best Musical Theatre Album. It’s hard not to love that boundless energy and excitement that radiates off him as he thanks those around him, although seeing the spectacular performance the cast put on, it’s evident how much they deserve the award.

6. He loves Theatre.

While he may have shot to worldwide fame with Hamilton – after already winning a Tony for his previous musical In The Heights – Miranda continuously exudes a hardworking, happy-go-lucky persona. Just watch him sing along to various songs with James Corden (and some very special guests). Whether it’s a track from Hamilton or another famous musical, the enthusiasm that he delivers these songs with seems to prove that, above everything else, he just loves Theatre.

7. We got to witness this amazing union of talent.

While we can all try to look as good as Emma Watson does as she “badly” beatboxes, this clip is probably one of the most precious videos on the internet. As part of International Women’s Day, Miranda joined forces with Watson, and we can’t deny how adorable everything turned out. You can watch the whole interview here.

8. He’s just an amazing person.

Shoes For The Lazy Girl

No matter how much of a sloth we can be, we still can’t escape the dreaded routine of sitting down and wearing shoes – and more often than not, we’re too lazy to wear pretty shoes that are far more complicated than we want them to be. We’ve compiled a lazy-girl guide to shoes that you can slip on in a few seconds or so – without even sitting down.
1. Sneakers

3771101040_2_3_1Es SUP 228,6x273 TR.indd
Zara, $69.90. Superga, $79.90.

Laces can be a real hassle. That’s why the lazy alternative are sneaker-like shoes, minus the laces. We’re talking about Slip-On sneakers that give off the same sporty vibe, but are much easier to wear. Also, velcro shoes are another great way to avoid the trouble of tying laces – and no, they aren’t childish. They’ll save you loads of time especially on lazy days; which is technically an everyday situation for us.

2. Boots

Chelsea
Topshop, $96.90.

The easiest way to go from sloppy to polished is to put on a sleek pair of boots that will lend edginess to your outfit. Whether you choose to wear them with jeans or a midi skirt – either way, a pair will take you from day to night, effortlessly. For the fellow lazy folks out there, you’ll only need the classic Chelsea boot. With an elastic side panel and a loop at the back for easy wearing, these ankle-high boots are pretty much the easiest boots to slip in due to the absence of laces, buckles or zips.

3. Sandals

HNMimage2xxl
H&M, $39.90. Asos, $44.24.

Can we just talk about how the raging trend of lace-up sandals are so ridiculously hard to wear? It takes around 5 minutes just to even tie up one side – not to mention the amount of effort needed to make sure the laces are aesthetically tied before heading out of home. We’d rather go for sandals that require minimal effort and time. Akin to slippers, slide-on sandals look a lot more presentable and can definitely be worn without commiting fashion suicide.

4. Flats

image1xxl5307101040_2_5_1
Asos, $39.82. Zara, $79.90.

Flats are hands down the most essential pair you need to have. Not only are they easy to slip on in the mornings, they are also extremely versatile and simple to coordinate. But of course, there are many different styles to pick from, and its compatibility is ultimately dependent on the structure of your feet, the length of your legs and your height. A tip for petite girls, try to always get a pair of pointed flats with a slight heel – they will elongate your legs and create the illusion that you’re much taller than you actually are. For those who have thicker legs, try to avoid brightly coloured flats – nude ones will always make your legs slimmer and longer.

An Honest Review Of The Nails Inc Spray Can Nail Polish

Spray paint nail polish? Definitely a novelty worth trying, we thought, even if just to join in on all the hype. The inner nail junkie in us sprung to attention and snagged a few bottles in choice colours (read: chromes), courtesy of Nails Inc. and decided to give it a whirl.

Screen Shot 2016-07-04 at 5.27.30 PMNails Inc Paint Can Spray Can Nail Polish in Mayfair Market Mews

The instructions: Apply the base coat, spray on the nail polish 30s after, and finish with the same clear polish as the top coat. Seemed simple enough. Here’s what went down.

TAKE 1
If anything, I probably didn’t realise the literal mess I was getting myself into taking this on. Aerosol sprays are always a messy affair, which means you might not want to do this indoors – strike one.

The base coat, which doubles as a top coat, applied smoothly. Still, pretty sure we made a strange sight for passersby – me slumped on the ground trying to spray just my fingernails and not everything else around me; a colleague fervently photographing the process from above. The spray polish went on incredibly patchy and goopy; it was pretty depressing. After a final layer of clear top coat, I was left with a bumpy and patchy manicure job, and I didn’t even have the excuse of painting with my left hand to cover up for it.

Colleague A and I were suitably disheartened – me especially, since I’d have to live with baby’s vomit on my left hand for the weekend.
However, apparently I did it wrong – you’re supposed to spray the polish at about 30cm away from your nails, to get a good, even coat like how you would use a regular spray paint. Oops. “Luckily you still have your right hand!” Colleague A chirped. Yes, lucky me.

TAKE 2

This time, with the help of Colleague B (aka art student experienced in spray paint, or at least common logic on how to use an aerosol spray), I ended up with a smoother first coat of nail polish – though obviously at some cost. The polish was now a perfect layer of metallic, rose gold sheen; but so was my hand. It looked like I’d dipped the top half of my hand into a bucket of paint, which was both cool and creepy at the same time. Thankfully, a trip to the restroom washed off the residue polish on my skin.

THOUGHTS
Pros

  • The polish dries in a hot minute, I’ll give you that – with or without a top coat
  • Running your hands under water won’t mess up the paintwork at all, so it’s definitely a lot less restrictive than regular nail polish. No bumps! No snags! No scratches! Now you can brush your teeth in peace!

Cons

  • So impossibly troublesome. Especially to do on your own. If you couldn’t already see from my first attempt, doing it as a one-man show is almost impossible, and that was just one hand
  • You end up with bronzed hands looking like you’re either a Greek artefact from The Metropolitan Museum, or an extra straight off the set of Mad Max
  • Washing off the residue paint on your skin is tricky too – sure it comes off with water, but not without some determined scrubbing. I spent a good five to ten minutes half-rubbing, half-clawing at my skin; and still ended up slightly shinier than the average person

FINAL VERDICT

Frankly, just not worth the effort – especially since the nail polish barely lasts a day. A few hours in and the entire layer had started peeling right off my nail with the ease of a cheapo pasar malam sticker. It’s marketed as the “world’s fastest manicure”, but honestly if you just ditched the spray can and stuck to regular nail polish, you’d probably get it done faster – and better. To be fair, it might be fun for people with more time or creativity on their hands, and particularly people good with spray cans. I could see this being a hit with art students who want to experiment with different aesthetics (a graffiti-style print even?), but for my next home manicure… I’ll pass, thanks.

Review: Dr Jart+ V7 Toning Light

For a few of us, the concept of “whitening” our skin might sound pretty dodgy. There’s no bleach involved, right? I won’t come out of it looking like a ghost? As someone who’s spent most of her life being pretty tan for a Chinese Singaporean, I wondered what this whitening cream held in store for me.

Sure, I’d tried my fair share of face masks which promised “translucent” skin – is this meant to sound appealing? – but my complexion typically came out uneven after those masking sessions. Maybe it was the way I placed the mask on my face? Maybe my T-zone is just a lot more stubborn than my cheeks? So many unanswered questions.

Dr.Jart V7 Toning Light (3)

The Dr Jart+ V7 Toning Light is a cream that’s meant to be enriched with seven different types of vitamins (thus the V7) which, when combined, promise to give an instant brightening effect. It’s also known to help lighten any dark marks or acne scars, so I kept my fingers crossed that it would help even out my complexion too. The cream also consists of 40% moisturising ingredients, which is always a plus; my skin gets insanely dry without any kind of moisturiser, even in Singapore’s humid weather.

Dr.Jart V7 Toning Light (1)Dr.Jart V7 Toning Light (2)

If first impressions are everything, I will say this: the jar the cream comes in undeniably guarantees quality, with it’s simple yet sturdy glass body and white cap. The jar also comes with an equally sturdy, transparent scoop, and you’re instructed to only use as much product as 1/3 of the scoop can hold. The cream promises an instant tone-up effect, although I was dubious about whether the product had actually affected my complexion, or if my brighter skin was merely a result of how thick the cream is upon application.

So, after using the cream twice a day, for six days, here’s my verdict: the Dr Jart+ V7 Toning Light works, but you have to be pretty patient. I only noticed a slightly brighter complexion on my bare face by the fourth or fifth day. On the plus side, I definitely saw that “instant” effect once the cream was on my face, so the product is a quick fix for anyone who wants to ditch the BB or CC Cream once in a while. Unfortunately, it didn’t feel as light on my face as I would have preferred, especially as someone who typically wears makeup going out, but it definitely kept my skin moisturised.

I’m not gonna lie, the V7 Toning Light definitely isn’t easy on your wallet, but it’s pretty worth it when you consider the amount of product in each jar, and the multi-benefits on your skin. Ultimately, when it comes to long-term skincare, you can trust this Korean brand.

Dr Jart+ V7 Toning Light, $71, available at Sephora online and in all Sephora stores from 4 August. sephora.sg/dr-jart

Different Types Of Lipstick Applicators

While we’re all used to the conventional lipsticks, some of us still can’t nail the perfect lip. For anybody who are still facing difficulties with a normal lipstick head (damn those smudges), here are some alternative lipstick applicators that you can try out; and you won’t have to go through another lipstick faux pas again. Either way, it’s our excuse to get even more lipsticks – different applicator, different effects; even if they are of the same shade. Lipstick junkies, you know what we’re saying.

Doe foot
1. Doe foot
The most common applicator around – wands shaped like a deer’s hoof, and are often found in tubes of liquid lipsticks and lip glosses. The angle of the applicator fits nicely with the natural contours of the lips, hence it glides effortlessly, giving you a precise application and promising payoff. If you’re afraid of having no control over your swipes, try applying your lipstick on your lower lip first, then work the upper lip and cupid’s bow. A great way to ensure a neat application is to apply a nude lip liner and concealer beforehand.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, $31, available at Sephora.
Clio Virgin Kiss Silkuid Lip, $22.90, available at Watsons.

Chubby

2. Chubby sticks
The best alternative to the normal lipstick. Don’t be fooled by this humble crayon-like lipstick – the colour payoff can actually be really promising, and it is often long-lasting as well. Due to its sharp tip, chubby sticks and pencils are great for those who can’t seem to stay within the lip lines. Although it might not glide on as easily as other applicators, it is much harder to make mistakes with these.

Make Up For Ever Artist Lip Blush, $42, available at Sephora ION Orchard, Sephora Ngee Ann City, and the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Loft.
Burberry Full Kisses, $41, available at Tangs and Sephora.

3. Squeeze tube

Too Faced Melted Chocolate Liquified Lipsticks (group shot)

Reminiscent of paint tubes, these squeeze tube applicators are basically liquid lipsticks; but without a presence of a wand. Instead of a wand, Too Faced’s Melted series has a sponge tip that is specially angled for an easy application. Other lipstick tubes that do not come with a sponge tip will require you to use a separate lip brush instead – while it may be troublesome, the rich and highly-pigmented texture makes up for it. Besides, you will be able to have much more control over your lip’s colour intensity – which also calls for a gradient lip!

4. Markers
zoom_7b8a46cdeb4d8bb51da5d5acaafdd2dcb8e93652_1403784821_3CE_LipMarker_Red

This one has a extremely light ink-link texture, so the colour pay off wouldn’t be as great as liquid lipsticks. However, this one’s perfect for lipstick beginners who are just experimenting around – the precise marker tip allows for an easy application. Furthermore, due to its light consistency, you needn’t be afraid of those dreaded smudges.
3CE Lip Marker, $23, available at Sephora.

Breakout Blemishes? The Body Shop's New Tea Tree Additions Are Here To Save The Day

One of the greatest sad truths of life is as such – there’s no escaping pimples; even when you’re well into your 30s and believe you’ve finally got things under control with a proper, killer (expensive) skincare routine. In fact, sudden pop-ups are the worst – giant face volcanoes that only stand out even more against the rest of your perfect canvas-like skin. It’s like getting punched in the face; except this red mark stays.

Enter The Body Shop’s Tea Tree oil-infused skincare range. We’ve been loving this for some time now specifically for treating blemishes, so the newest Blemish Battling Superhero Squad is a welcome addition. Made with 100% organic tea tree oil, the three products were formulated to help battle blemishes before they even appear – to literally get under the skin and work its au naturel magic.

From the squad, there’s the Daily Skin Avenger – or the new and improved Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Daily Solution, a lightweight, fast-absorbing serum made for all-over-face application. Then there’s the all-new 3-in-1 Wash.Scrub.Mask (which goes by the undercover name of Kickass Cleanser), a multi-tasking cleanser with foaming kaolin clay, volcanic minerals, and the same Community Trade Tea Tree Oil that specifically tackles clogged pores, blackheads, and shine. It works as an all-in-one purifying daily cleanser, a scrub to clear and tighten the skin’s appearance, and a mask to deep cleanse and mattify – incredibly handy to have at your sink, we think. And bringing up the rear is the cult classic bottled Tea Tree Oil itself, which works best for on-the-spot spot treatment in the event of a sneak attack – just apply directly onto your blemish and you’re good to go.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Daily Solution 50ml, $29.90, 3-in-1 Wash.Scrub.Mask 125ml, $29.90, Tea Tree Oil, $19.90 to $34.90, available at all The Body Shop stores from 28 July 2016.

These Sephora Fall Launches Are All About The Nudes

This whole nude trend really doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere, huh? After digging through the treasure trove that was our press kit from the Sephora Fall Press Day, we came to this certain conclusion: nudes, in particular on the lips, are about to get an even bigger moment in the months to come, if all these launches from the various brands are anything to go by. We’ll happily stock up on our twentieth nude-toned liquid lipstick, then.

NUDESTIX Intense Matte Colour Lip + Cheek Pencil

nudestix

So the difference between these and the existing NUDESTIX Lip + Cheek Pencils, which are already great by the way, is that the finish is now matte where it was previously more creamy. You’ll also notice that these come in a crayon form (as compared to a pencil), which makes sense for a more intense colour payoff. And coming from a brand like NUDESTIX, of course the eight shades cover mostly peach and pink-toned nudes, with a red and berry thrown in too.
$37, available from 15 Sep.

Stila Stay All Day MATTE’ificent Lipstick
stila

We believe in Stila’s Stay All Day line with a passion – that’s where that cult liquid eyeliner and that intensely matte liquid lipstick that seriously doesn’t budge come from, after all. Now they’ve added a matte line to their Stay All Day lipstick, and among the 12 shades we’re already eyeing the nudes like Palais, a toffee nude, Bonbon, a terracotta nude, and Coquille, the all-essential taupe nude.
$35, available from 15 Sep.

Tarte Naughty Nudes Collection
tarte blushes
tarte

Tarte has gone one step further and dedicated pretty much their entire Fall collection to nudes, and they’ve called it “Naughty Nudes”, because these sure aren’t boring colours. The four shades of the Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush cover nude-toned pinks and peaches in addition to the original Exposed, and there’s also now a Amazonian Clay 12-hour Highlighter joining the family to add a peachy-pearlescent shimmer. And then, the Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paints in five brown-tone nudes – definitely shades worth investing in, because take it from us: brown lips sure are making a comeback.
$32 to $37, available from 21 Jul.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Matte Lipstick
too faced

These liquid matte lipsticks just keep coming, don’t they. Of course we’re not complaining in the least, especially when it’s Too Faced getting in on the liquid matte game as well, because now their amazing Melted lipsticks are being made into a rich, matte finish in a traditional doe-foot applicator form, which makes application a bit easier. Shades we’re zooming in straight on: Cool Girl, a cool brown-nude, and Queen B, a mauve.
$33, launch date TBC.

NYX Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipstick
nyx

We’re not sure why brands have been favouring the idea of branding nude lipsticks as underwear for the lips, but we hope they keep them coming. NYX is more than familiar with liquid lipsticks already, but we still think these will sell like hotcakes – just because all the nude shades are so damn pretty.
$19, available from Sep.

IT Cosmetics Your Lips But Better All-Day Waterproof Lip Liner Stain
it cosmetics

With a name like “Your Lips But Better”, you know this will be handy in creating nicely natural colour. The six shades are mostly nude-themed as well, and can be used to keep your nude lip colour in place and smudge-free for hours, or if not, to fill in your lips completely for a barely-there stain.
$34, available from Sep.

6 K-Pop Girl Groups You Need To Check Out

Most of us might scoff at the idea of K-Pop girl groups, relegating them only to squeaky-clean, painfully peppy bubblegum pop concepts and an equally cavity-inducing sound. Maybe envy gets in the way too; are there any girl group members that don’t look good in anything that they wear? But sometimes, we just can’t deny that urge to say “you go, girl!” and a surge of admiration each time we see idols bust-a-move in heels. So with that in mind, here are six K-pop girl groups we feel deserve more love.
*****
Red Velvet (레드벨벳)

Hailing from the hallowed halls of S.M. Entertainment – the company behind the ever-iconic Girls’ Generation and Super Junior – Red Velvet burst onto the K-Pop scene in 2014, and they’ve been going strong ever since. The now-five-member girl group has received huge amounts of love from fans all over the world, as evident in their ventures with KCON, the annual K-Pop convention and music festival held in the States. Their music is distinctly S.M., as well as their music videos, although they recently slowed things down with One Of Those Nights, wowing audiences with their vocals. Member Seulgi is also known to have many female fans; is it any wonder why? She basically oozes cool and confidence.

GFriend (여자친구)

While they received a spike of popularity from a series of rather unfortunate stage falls, GFriend are both charming and hardworking, and their music is definitely catchy. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard from them as recently as the other groups on this list, but we trust they’re cooking up something good. The six-member group is also particularly known for their highly synchronised and powerful choreography (duh), which can probably be explained by the fact that they share the same choreographer as BTS.

OH MY GIRL (오마이걸)

What a typically cliché name, you may think. But OH MY GIRL never fails to put out good music with equally refreshing concepts. Their latest release, Windy Day, sees an interesting blend of classic bubblegum K-pop and a chorus of Indian instruments. It sounds like a stretch, but it really works. Their hit song Closer, boasting a slightly more mature sound, also saw them taking on a twisted fairytale concept, sans-prince charming, which is a pretty unique choice.

Ladies’ Code (레이디스 코드)

The world of K-Pop was understandably shaken in 2014, when members EunB and RiSe of Ladies’ Code were tragically killed in a car accident. But the remaining three members of the group, Ashley, Sojung and Zuny, pledged to stay strong and honour their members, deciding to continue on as a trio earlier this year. Their comeback title track, Galaxy is a beautiful and haunting love song, and the music video is undoubtedly equally gorgeous. While they’re still a relatively young group and may have a long way to go, we can’t help but admire their ability to bounce back after so much pain. Stay strong, girls.

CLC (씨엘씨)

CLC is meant to be an initialism for ‘CrystaL Clear’, but we can’t figure out if they’re named after their super crisp sound or their amazingly youthful complexions. Either way, the seven-member girl group of Cube Entertainment – a.k.a. the agency of groups like B2ST/BEAST and 4Minute – has an undeniably contagious peppy vibe that we can’t get enough of. Thai member Sorn is also particularly eye-catching; if her name sounds familiar, it’s because she was the winner of the first season of K-Pop Star Hunt back in 2011. Each member of CLC also has their own “fruit symbol”, which sounds pretty weird, but also really cute.

MAMAMOO (마마무)

Hailed as one of the best K-Pop debuts back in 2014, MAMAMOO are undeniably one of the best live acts out there. They’ve proven their flawless group vocals time and time again – heck, they even sing their introductions in perfect harmony every time they’re on shows. Their music is generally classified under the “retro” movement of K-Pop, but the genre is perfect for their soulful, powerful voices. Off-stage, they’re known for the playful, good vibes they bring, and have a impressively large female fanbase as a result of their laid-back personalities. Even Red Velvet can’t resist their charms.

We know what most of you are probably thinking: green lipstick and blush? Has the world gone mad? But have no fear, the new LIPSTICK QUEEN Frog Prince Lip Gloss and Cream Blush are only the latest of those magical, colour-changing beauty products everyone’s been dying to get their hands on.

Lipstick Queen_Frog Prince Lip Gloss

Containing Natural Oils, Shea Butter and Maxi-lip, a natural peptide that stimulates collagen and hyaluronic acid, the lip gloss also helps to nourish and regenerate the lips for a plumper, fuller and more well-defined pout. So you won’t be kissing any frogs, but there could be a human prince out there…

PUMA IGNITE Dual

IGNITE Dual[1]

PUMA is dropping yet another pair of shoes – this time, an addition to their signature IGNITE running franchise. The all-new IGNITE Dual for Autumn-Winter ’16 is designed especially for mid and long distance runners, with its special flexibility and cushioning engineered by its IGNITE FOAM midsole. Furthermore, with articulated grooves, runners will be able to land comfortably with minimal impact, and achieve a smoother rebound too. We especially love the pair’s two-tone mesh that promises lightweight breathability, comfortable fit and flexibility – which is great news considering how (mentally) agonising running can be, and PUMA makes it bearable with these comfortable shoes.
189148_01_ProfileIGNITE Dual_Pair

We’ll admit that it’s almost impossible to look great while running; so our shoes are the last redeeming hope we have in looking slightly better. So with its’s refreshing contemporary graphics, colour shifting mesh as well as reflective panels that makes it visibly prominent even in low lighting, our feet can look on point even when we’re sweating buckets and looking dead on the outside.

PUMA IGNITE Dual, $159, available from 15 July at PUMA stores and authorised retailers.

Fujifilm's New Instax Share Smartphone Printer SP-2

Instax cameras can be so fun – especially those aesthetically pleasing polaroid pieces we all have on our walls or stashed somewhere in our wallets. However, the instant camera came with huge risks too; one wrong click and the photos will turn out to be a huge black mess. That’s why we were so thankful when Fujifilm blessed us with the Instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-1 back in 2014 that allowed us to print images from our phones, instantly. It’s as easy as it sounds – with just the printer and the instax share application, polaroid-style, credit card sized photos can be printed on the go.

43
This year, the smartphone printer receives an upgrade – with a new exposure system, expect to see higher image resolution and contrast, which means that photos will no longer be grainy. Also, with improved technology, you can now get your photos printed in just 10 seconds; a vast improvement from the previous version.
To make things even easier, the free Instax SHARE app has received the addition of new filters and templates, sparing us the effort and hassle of painstakingly editing photos in a third party application before sending them to print. Brightness, contrast and saturation can now be adjusted easily, and with templates such as the “collage template”, we’re able to combine up to four images into one instax photo.

The new Fujifilm printer has been given a refreshingly sleek makeover in colours silver and gold. It is also significantly smaller and lighter as well, making it a handy photo printer that you can always carry around – the perfect tool for emergency selfie sessions, just because.
