When Your Favourite Film Is A "Bad" Film

While we’ve already covered the worrying trend of TV snobbery, it’s undeniable that publicly conveying your love of certain films can also lead to some…awkward situations. And hey, I’ll admit, I’m guilty of this too. People put the words “favourite” and “Transformers” (see also: Michael Bay) in the same sentence and I can feel my inner-self running for the hills – and maybe I’ll run too, moments later.

via GIPHY

But okay, let’s assess this prejudice. What makes a film “bad” anyway? We typically turn to Rotten Tomatoes to figure out how our trusted reviewers feel about the film even before we purchase tickets, or maybe just to see if our bad/good feelings about our film are justified. But we all know at least one person who comes out of a “dreadful” film completely ecstatic and saying that they’d get it on blu-ray in a heartbeat. The Transformers films have a crazy big fanbase too, raking in over 92 million at the box office…and that’s in China alone.

via GIPHY

So what’s it like when your favourite film is a “bad” one, generally speaking? Well, here’s my confession: I love the 2008 film Speed Racer, and yes, I can already feel your eyebrows raising. While it’s recently been hailed as an underrated cult film, I kept it a secret for the longest time because of how dismal the reviews were about it. It bombed at the box office, and critics raged at it for being less of a comprehensive storyline and more of a “look, ma, I can do this with my computer!”. But something about the roar of the crowd, the crazy gravity-defying track, and the campy costumes just made sense to me. Something about it clicked, and I still can’t figure out what. Maybe I felt Speed’s sense of triumph whenever he raced. Maybe his fiercely loyal family was a breath of fresh air from the torn relationships of modern-day drama films. Maybe something about how un-real it was made me hopeful that it could be real.

via GIPHY

Cheesiness aside, the truth is that we all have our list of “bad” and “good” films. There’s no universal truth when it comes to art – yup, Film is an art. Your favourite film might be someone else’s “bad” film, just like how their favourite might make you grimace. And that’s okay. So if your favourite film is “bad”, but makes you feel happy, no one can really judge you for that. Maybe you see something in it that others don’t, and hey, you never know, maybe you’ll find a few years later that you were in on one of the best kept secrets of all time.

via GIPHY

So hey, maybe there’s something in Transformers that I’m missing out on but uh, I’ll save that battle for another day.

Metallic Lips: Yay Or Nay

A few months back, Kylie Cosmetics unveiled a trio of metallic matte liquid lipstick that caused very different reactions. While the slaves of King Kylie were frenzied and began their night-long camps in front of the computer screen, the rest of the world were sceptical. Technically, metallic lips aren’t new – they are pretty old actually. Having reigned in the 90s and also a few years back, everybody was pretty much done and dusted with these shimmering colours and have moved on to better things (i.e matte). Also, aren’t metallic lips just…frosted gloss? But I guess we were wrong; Kylie showed how influential she can be by bringing the metallic lips back into action – and it seems like it’s going to be the perfect Fall lip trend (or you know, rainy days here in Singapore).

These metallic lips by Kylie Cosmetics are currently out of stock (what’s new), but there are many ways to get yourself some of these alternative lips. We’ve wrapped up other brands that actually started carrying metallic lipsticks way before Kylie started them. So if you said “nay” to Kylie’s trio metallic lip debut a few months back, don’t ditch the metallic just yet; we think you’d definitely say yes to these.

1. Too Faced Melted Metal

Melted Metal in Violet, $15 (on sale), Sephora.

Cute packaging, long-wear formula, gorgeous colours and an easy precision-tip applicator. What’s not to love about Too Faced Melted liquid lipstick series? It was hard to say no when they released the metallic version of their cult favourite Matte liquid lipsticks; and even harder when we found out they had such a wearable, gorgeous shade of violet.

Ok, so what if we can’t look as stunning as Kathleen Lights? Given that it offers up to 16 hours of wear and it is so affordably priced, there’s no harm trying one, or all eight shades while we’re at it.

3. OFRA Cosmetics
OFRA Fifth AveOFRA Times Square
Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Fifth Ave and Times Square, USD19.90, ofracosmetics.com.

We’re all familiar with OFRA’s liquid lipstick. While they do not have a metallic lipstick collection, we think that both the glittering shades of silver (Times Square) and gold (Fifth Ave) make a great metallic sheen. Just layer them on top of a matte base lipstick and you’ll get your own metallic lips.

4. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

We’re sure you see now why the internet has been all over these. Basically, they’re by a Chinese brand named Kailijumei, and they’re essentially glosses dispensed by these clear tubes that encase a tiny flower that corresponds to the shade of the gloss, as well as enchanting gold flecks – it’s safe to say it’s the prettiest lipstick of the year. The glosses actually adjust to the natural colour of your lips so they appear on different people differently – yes, this is one of those colour-changing mood lipsticks.
As expected, these were out of stock for awhile, and we could all only anxiously submit our pre-orders, and keep an obsessive eye on the Kailijumei Instagram page for restock updates. And… our efforts paid off! The three limited edition shades Hot Pink, Barbie Doll Powder and Minutemaid are now in stock, but they probably won’t be for long, so click fast.

5 Alternative Ice Creams For This Blazing Weather

We’ll admit; the weather’s been a little erratic lately, yet through the sun and rain one thing remains consistent – that heat. It’s no wonder that in an environment like ours, we’re constantly snacking on icy desserts and cold treats just to stay cool (or at least that’s our excuse). Still, as much as we love a good ice cream cone, it’s always fun to venture beyond and try our, err, tongue at some more unique ice cream desserts. Here’s our pick for refreshing treats to beat the heat.

Ice Cream Burritos

Brrr-ito

It seems after the rise of the sushi burrito, people are becoming more determined than ever to fill burrito skins with just about anything. We aren’t complaining though! Especially when the savoury-sweet dessert is Ben & Jerry’s Brrr-ito, comprising ice cream of your choice wrapped in a soft waffle sheet. Yes, it’s essentially a soft ice cream cone, but the thrill of picking one up with both hands already makes half the meal. Try B&J’s latest flavour yet, the Choc Full of Ideasinc, made from chocolate and caramel ice creams with chocolate chip cookie dough, peanut butter cookie dough, and a crunchy cookie swirl – sure to send you reeling from ice cream burrito awesomeness.
Brrr-ito, $12.90, available at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops till July.

Rolled Ice Cream

Image from Facebook (@Happy Rollies)

Here’s one that’s been circulating the dessert market for some time now. For lovers of quirky bazaar food, the rolled ice cream trend originated from the street markets and dessert peddlers of Thailand, combining taste and entertainment for a 100baht-worthy experience. You’ll be surprised to find how low-cost the actual process of making rolled ice cream is – made entirely on an iced grill, condensed milk forms the base of the rolls, before your toppings of choice (anything from cornflakes to nutella, and even to Thai milk tea powder) are mixed in and ferociously mashed together, Cold Stone Creamery style. The end result is 5-6 rolls of pure gastronomic heaven. It looks cute to begin with; so you’ll be surprised to find that it tastes even better than it looks.
Try Happy Rollies at the Geylang Ramadan Bazaar while you still can, or pop by Coyoro in the North if that’s more convenient.

Froyo Bun
Screen-Shot-2016-04-08-at-6.39.37-PMScreen-Shot-2016-04-08-at-6.39.45-PM1

In another strange fusion of sweet and savoury, yogurt bar Squeezed! has created the humble froyo bun – or more specifically, the #briyo bun, a quirky half-brioche, half fro-yo concoction. It’s tart, all-natural frozen yogurt sandwiched between two toasted brioche buns, and is perfect for when you’re in the mood for something cold and filling. It comes in two savoury options, but obviously we’re going for the four sweet dessert buns, which may look sinful but actually pack a pretty nutritional punch. We’re surprised these haven’t swept the Instagram community off their feet yet, but then again, you never know when an age-old food item suddenly becomes a trend.

Cookies! Macarons! Bread! Let’s sandwich ice cream into everything! screams the dessert world fervently. Fine by us; the latest ice-cream-between-something to have hit our shores brings the luxurious macaron into the spotlight. Larger than the average macaron, these ice cream sandwiches seem to have originated from South Korea. We’re going to take a guess here and say these probably taste like your $1 green bread ice cream sandwiches from the local ice cream man – but with a little more glamour.

Nitrogen Ice Cream

Nitrogen ice cream might seem gimmicky, what with it being frozen instantly with liquid nitrogen at -195 degrees, but the fresh natural ingredients guarantee great flavour and creamy textures. And now, there’s no more need to shell out a fortune just to try such “novelty” ice cream. We’ll be honest: the day Mini Melts abruptly left our shores, somewhere in the late 2000s, was a tough one; so you can bet we’re stoked to finally have it back. Newly reopened and better than ever, Mini Melts presents the kick of nitrogen ice cream in a fun, multi-coloured way our nostalgic little hearts can appreciate. Light and refreshing, they’re perfect for an on-the-go snack – and the hundreds of little balls will definitely make any 90s kid squeal in fond memory.
Mini Melts Singapore, VivoCity #B2-K7, 10am to 10pm daily.

5 YouTube Musicians To Listen To

Scroll down to any good cover of a song on YouTube, and you’ll find a comment along the lines of “I heard (insert original artist’s name here) made a cover of this”. But as corny as that line sounds, we can’t deny good covers when we hear them. Whether they’re completely reinventing songs to sound like 1950s doo-wop bops, creating a medley of the artist’s greatest hits, or simply just giving the song an acoustic spin with their beautiful voices, it’s hard not to love at least one YouTube Musician. To give you a quick intro, we’ve compiled five of them, including some who’ve also begun to create their own original music.
*****
Postmodern Jukebox

It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t love a good #throwback, and Postmodern Jukebox perfectly melds the swinging sounds of yesteryear with the repetitive pop lyrics of today. Slight shade aside, you’ll be surprised at how refreshing it is to hear hits like Royals and We Can’t Stop sung to you as if you’re the patron of some snazzy club, fancy dress and all. There also seems to be no end to the amazing singers they collaborate with, so even if you don’t like doo wop or swing, you can appreciate how effortless their vocals are.

Kurt Hugo Schneider

While he’s better known as a producer-slash-musicians rather than a vocalist, Kurt Hugo Schneider is probably one of the best known YouTube musicians out there. With over seven million subscribers, it’s no surprise that he’s collaborated with some of the biggest names from Sam Tsui, Against The Current (also featured on this list) and even Benjamin Kheng of The Sam Willows. He’s also known for putting out cover videos that go the extra mile for that original twist, whether it’s done entirely while playing patty cake or with the instruments being played by 50 000 M&M’s. Yeah, that actually happened.

Alex Goot

Alex Goot’s boy-next-door charm and style allow for his covers to be both enjoyable and fun to listen to. While his covers don’t typically show off his vocal range, there’s no mistake that he has a gift for music. I mean, is there an instrument he can’t play (I’m looking at you too, Kurt Hugo Schneider)? He’s also collaborated with other notable YouTube musicians such as Madilyn Bailey, Julia Sheer and Dave Days. Aside from his covers, he’s also posted a couple original songs, including the song he sang to propose to his fiancée. Sigh.

Against The Current

Together with fellow musicians Sam Tsui, Alex Goot, and even Kurt Hugo Schneider, Against The Current (ATC) made their name known through various collaborations with other cover artists. It’s hard not to recognise frontwoman Chrissy Costanza’s voice, and if anything, you’ll definitely recognise her super-sharp cat eyeliner whenever she appears in videos. The band has taken on everything from popular Christmas songs to indie bands like Bleachers, although they’ve recently been producing a lot more original music, particularly since they signed with Fueled By Ramen. Yes, that Fueled By Ramen.

Pentatonix

Okay, we cheated a little since Pentatonix didn’t get their start on YouTube, but it’s hard to ignore their impact on the community. Who’d have thought that their Daft Punk cover would win them their first Grammy just after they released their second EP? My personal favourite would definitely be their ‘Evolution Of…’ covers, from the music of Michael Jackson to Beyoncé to even the evolution of music itself. Seriously, that’s how talented they are. Members Scott and Mitch also produce covers of their own over on their channel SUPERFRUIT, delivering entire, truly flawless, medleys of albums. It’s definitely aca-amazing.

Multi-tasking Beauty Products

If you’re running out of space in your makeup stash, it’s time to start purchasing double-duty beauty products that can fulfil more than just a single purpose. Besides saving space, you’ll get to cut back your spending.
1. Base makeup and Sunscreen

s1509512-main-zoom
Moisture Surge CC Cream Hydrating Colour Corrector Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $53, available at Clinique counters.

It’s a hassle trying to protect your skin from the sun’s harsh UV rays and more often than not, we tend to forgo the most important step of our skin care. Try a base that already includes sun protection – this way, you can avoid wasting time by applying two different layers. We also love colour correctors that gives your skin a healthy glow by correcting any complexion problems, according to your skin tone. That’s a real deal, really.

2. Eyeshadows

eyeshadow:eyeliner:cheekeyeshadow:cheek
Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette, $72, Sephora. Moonshot Jelly Pot in Sparkling Rose, $34, Sephora.

Palettes:
So many ways to use an eyeshadow palette that will definitely justify the high price you’ve paid. Using an angled brush, line your eyes with the darkest shade for a eyeliner that’s less harsh and sharp. This will give your eyes a softened look that’s more natural. Also, apply the lightest shade on your palette as a highlighter – on the bridge of your nose, the inner corners of your eyes, your cupid’s bow, as well as just above your cheekbones. Alternatively, matte brown shadows can double up as bronzers. Swipe them on your cheekbones to sculpt your face.
Pots:
Pot shadows usually have really rich textures – which are great for a cheek application as well. Tiny swipes with your fingers will do the trick, and its creamy application will give you the “no makeup” makeup look, which is always a plus.

3. Brown eyeliner

eyeliner:eyebrow:cnotouring
Make Up For Ever Kohl Pencil, $34, Sephora.

Other than lining your eyes, brown eyeliners can be used for contouring or filling in your brows when you’re out of brow pencil.

4. Lip and Cheek

cheek:lipzoom_bbd24378dffbf17c13c241e067a35c490b7c7a66_1445942451_Nudestix_Lip_Cheek_Pencil_Sin_WEB
3CE Lip Pigment, $22, Sephora. Nudestix Lip/Cheek Pencil, $37, Sephora.

Lip products that double up as blushers are the most useful products ever. We’re talking about stains, creams and tints for the job. Besides, these blushers will look more glowy on your skin, as compared to a powder blush. All you need to do is to blend the product on your cheeks with your fingers and you’re good to go! These are made for lazy folks out there; now you can avoid the trouble of finding matching lip and cheek shades when you can apply the same product on both. Yay!

5. White eyeliner

white eyeliner
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil, $10, Sephora.

An essential in your makeup stash. Other than waterlining and highlighting the inner corners of your eyes, a good jumbo white eyeliner can be applied as the base of your eyeshadow for a shimmering effect. Also, trace it just above and below your brow bone for a refreshing glow.

Ditch Your Base And Top Coats For This 7-in-1 Nail Care Superhero

Nothing wrong at all with being a nail polish addict – we’ll be the first ones to confess that we collect nail colours like we were born with 100 nails and had the time to switch our nail colour every other day. Treat yourself to all the nudes or glitters or duochromes or cremes you want, because nail colours are fun, and everyone should get to wear as much of it as they want to.
But yes, there’s a downside, and it’s that nail polish makes your nails go dry and brittle. That’s why when you go too long without letting your nails breathe, you find that they become more prone to breakage, and start to sport unsightly ridges. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s a whole bunch of nail problems out there that women often have to deal with: dry and rough cuticles, nail discolouration, chipped nails, peeling nails, and weaker nails in the long term, in addition to the afore-mentioned brittleness and ridging.
That’s a lot of problems for a simple pleasure like giving yourself a nice manicure or pedicure, we think. Sally Hansen agrees, so they’re here to save the day with this new product that’s really quite the superhero: the Complete Care 7-in-1 Nail Treatment that promises to solve all of the above nail problems, in addition to functioning as both a base and top coat.

Its power lies in a combination of avocado oil, sea salt, pomegranate extract and calcium, all the natural stuff that helps keep nails healthy. One coat as a base coat and one more as a top coat is all you need of this product, and the new flat brush design ensures it always goes on smoothly and evenly. In three days, your nail woes go away and nails become stronger and smoother, and it also promises to keep your nail colour looking shiny and fresh for up to 10 days.

We’re seriously loving that we now only need this one bottle for our base coat, top coat and nail care product, which also means we can have more room to store more new nail polishes. Go ahead, indulge in that manicure guilt-free.

Sally Hansen Complete Care 7-in-1 Nail Treatment, $19.50. Available in Watsons, Guardian and department stores. Get a free 4-piece manicure kit (worth $10.50) containing a nail clipper, metal nail file, cuticle pusher and 3-way nail buffer with every purchase of the Complete Care 7-in-1 Nail Treatment, while stocks last. sg,sallyhansen.com

A Glossary Of Weird Makeup Terms

The world of makeup can be a scary place – especially when it comes with a barrage of strange beauty terms you never knew existed. Here’s to trying to nail them (and a new makeup technique while we’re at it!) one at a time.

Bake

Screen Shot 2016-06-27 at 11.59.24 AM
Image from YouTube (@Heidi Hamoud)

Skeptics be scoffing at the term, but my ladies and YouTube makeup cult followers know where it’s at. “Baking” is a term and method of makeup setting that’s been used in the drag community for decades – and is essentially applying translucent powder to the skin and letting it sit for about ten minutes; thereby allowing your body heat to “melt” the product into a creaseless, flawless finish. Afterwards, simply dust the excess powder off. The key here is to apply a heavy layer of powder on top of your base makeup (foundation, concealer etc.), so there’s enough of it to bake your concealer into your face. If you think you look ridiculous halfway through, you’re doing it right.

Strobing
13167460_1067574383313598_781345372_n
Image from Instagram (@kendalljenner)

To break it down for you, consider this analogy: If Kylie were contouring personified, Kendall would be strobing. Both techniques leave you with a flawless, chiseled face – but instead of the harsh, darker browns used to accentuate the hollows of your face, strobing focuses on using your best highlighters to bring out the areas where light would naturally hit. That means turning up the glow on your cheekbones, brow bone, nosebridge, and centre of your forehead. The finished result is a more natural, dewy look that’s still as camera-ready – and far more appropriate in our Asian communities, tbh.

Stipple
Ever wondered what a flat-topped stipple brush was for? Stippling involves applying your liquid foundation in dotting motions, as opposed to regular rubbing or brushing in it with a foundation brush, for a more airbrushed effect. Stippling is particularly recommended for those with acne scars, as it brushes foundation over the scars instead of into, giving you a smooth finish. The term itself is originally one used in visual art and painting, wherein the artist marks the canvas with numerous small dots or specks – more proof that makeup is an art form in its own.

Snatched
Screen Shot 2016-06-27 at 12.05.37 PM
Image from YouTube (@jeffreestar)

Urban Dictionary defines it as “a popular term in the gay community referring to good looks, fierceness, or something good”; think “fleek” but way more fabulous. While it isn’t exactly a legitimate makeup term, beauty YouTubers and makeup artists alike have been casually incorporating “snatched” into their get-ready-with-me lingo, to convey how polished or on-point they want their makeup to be. The one and only Jeffree Star is guilty of constantly informing his viewers to “keep that nose snatched”.

Buff
More straightforward than it sounds, buffing product into your skin simply means evening it out over the face for a smooth finish – be it foundation, powder, blush etc. It’s also more commonly used with mineral makeup, which comes in loose powder form, and done in circular motions till everything is molded smoothly into the face. Think the finished effect of beautyblenders, but with a brush.

Tightline

via GIPHY

We’ll end on a light note. Tightlining your eyes is the technique of applying eyeliner at the top and bottom of your lash lines, and is a simple way to subtly brighten the eyes while still looking natural. Carefully draw along your waterline and fill in between your lashes; but be sure not to poke an eye out.

We Went On A Coffee Hiatus For A Week And Here's What Happened

Yes, we all know that coffee is bad for health. Here are some scare factors about caffeine consumption: coffee is dehydrating, causes anxiety and insomnia, and it also disrupts the detoxification process in the liver. After being endlessly tagged in videos and articles about said health problems (my friends are really giving me an intervention), not to mention spending a good sum of money on coffee every week, I made a solemn decision to kickstart my caffeine withdrawal process. On a daily basis, I usually take at least two cups of coffee without sugar, and cutting down to zero sure sounded like an impossible challenge. Here’s how my experimental week-long coffee break went:
I had my last good cup of coffee on a Sunday afternoon before going cold turkey. It was like bidding farewell to a beloved friend of many years, I was agonised. My friends thought that I was overreacting and my mother even called me crazy; but hey, I’m trying to quit here! Only fellow coffee addicts would understand how I feel.
Monday mornings are already bad enough, but this particular Monday sure felt like hell. I usually get a cup of coffee before I start getting ready for work, but then it hit me – I couldn’t. It was a real painful experience when I walked past the usual coffee shop on the way to work, but not that I was that awake to feel any actual pain. The next few days without coffee were hazy moments, but it’s finally the end of my week-long ban and I’m summarising its benefits and ill effects.

The good
1. Though I was still suffering from bad caffeine withdrawal symptoms, I tried to load up on more water than usual, which definitely made me a healthier person.
2. I had great sleep every night, and I actually felt a lot more refreshed on subsequent mornings. Reducing my caffeine intake also meant having more appetite to have fruits for breakfast, which is always a plus.
3. Not getting coffee also meant spending less money!

The bad
1. Noticeably, my thought process slowed down and I found myself taking longer than usual to respond in physical and virtual conversations.
2. I couldn’t concentrate or sit for long, there was always an urge to get moving!
3. My mood was terrible and I was really grumpy; which is why I had little to no social interaction outside of work. Come on, I was exhausted!

via GIPHY

4. Extreme headaches throughout the day that made me regret this brave experiment in the first place.
5. I had to eat more food to fill the coffee-sized hole in my heart and stomach, which meant being bloated and feeling fat, upset and chubby.
6. Basically, I was depressed.

My conclusions
Needless to say, I wouldn’t be putting myself through such agony ever again. This week-long hiatus has allowed me to fully realise what a daily cuppa joe does to my sanity. Before you call me a weakling or a slave to coffee… well honestly, I won’t deny your accusations. It’s safe to say that coffee has completely taken over my life and it’s hard to function without it. Now, that’s love.
This wasn’t intended to discourage you from starting your brave escape from the evil clutches of caffeine; you should definitely do it, considering the said health problems it will cause in the long run. But as for me…

WATCH: SK-II's Touching Video That Inspires Us To Dream Again

No one expects a regular beauty brand to delve deeply into societal issues, after all, in the skeptical parts of our brains, aren’t they building up unrealistic expectations of perfection to start with? Getting into this topic is usually testy, most times problematic, but not when we’re considering a beauty brand that’s bold enough to tackle these issues head-on.
Just a while ago, SK-II, known best for their Facial Treatment Essence that made the phrase “crystal clear skin” a part of our lexicon, launched a “Marriage Market” video that went viral all over our Facebook walls — not because it was hilarious or “meme-able”, but because it, honestly, talked about single “leftover” women who felt pressured to get married by either their families or society, who then, within the span of the social experiment, got to voice out their feelings in the heart of China’s marriage corner at Shanghai’s People Square. In short, it was touching, highly relevant.
The latest part of the campaign then deals with dreams. “Dream Again” is the latest installment in the brand’s #changedestiny campaign, and aims to empower women to take control of their future and achieve their long-lost aspirations. All this, is perfectly captured in the video here:

It’s an inspiring take on what are kinda sobering results from a global survey that the brand conducted — it found that 1 in 2 women have already given up on their dreams, letting it fade due to reasons like limited financial support, being afraid of leaving their comfort zones, or their dreams not fitting into tradition. This sentiment seems to run more clearly among women from Japan, Korea and Singapore.
With that in mind, SK-II decided to embark on a social experiment of their own as well, at their event at One Raffles Place this week. Rather than having working executives and professionals seeking advice from trained peers, interestingly, children were playing counsellor to these grown-ups, asking them about their dreams and getting us to reflect on the things we yearn for. All the brand’s efforts result in a stark reminder that, maybe, we should start rethinking our priorities — that instead of chasing perfection or fitting in, it’s okay to dream a little, and a little bit more.

This Beautiful Oriental Piece Is Swatch's First Collaboration With A Singaporean Artist

Here’s a new bit of arm candy to sport this summer – one that comes with a gorgeous hint of proper, proud Asian influence too. The timepiece in question is the newest Swatch Art Peach Hotel Special, a beautiful oriental collaboration between Swatch and Singapore’s very own Yi Lin Juliana “Juls” Ong, an artist-in-residence at the Hotel. The renowned art hotel is located on the Bund in Shanghai, and, upon application, welcomes and houses artists from all around the world to live and work in Shanghai.

The Juls At Swatch Art Peace Hotel (SUOZ217), then, marks the first release of a Swatch Art Peace Hotel Special created by an artist who has lived and worked as an artist-in-residence at the hotel – and the first collab between Swatch and a Singaporean, of course. Juls brings to the table her distinct Chinese heritage with a striking red and blue colour motif set against white – very evocative of traditional oriental chinaware. Yet, the highlight of the timepiece has to be the intricate faces and figures adorning it – part of the vibrant community she created during her time at the hotel, and inspired by the comic faces found on Chinese artifacts. Among Juls’s “strange characters”, you’ll surely recognise the iconic fat lady prints on the silicone strap; who remind us an awful lot of a certain plump matchmaker in Mulan.

JULS X SWATCH LAUNCH (1)

And while you still can, drop by the Swatch store in Marina Bay Sands, which has been transformed into an art exhibition space curated to reflect Juls’s atelier at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel. It documents her experiences whilst in residence at the hotel, and even features a replica of her original workspace, silk screens and her prints. It’s another one for the books for our homegrown talents; which is always cause for celebration.

Here's What's Happening This Weekend

Joan Cornella: A Solo Exhibition

homeless

It doesn’t take an art buff to know Joan Cornella – and even if you don’t, you’ll definitely recongise his Internet-viral cartoons. Based in Barcelona, the Spanish cartoonist/illustrator is well known for his wordless, brightly coloured six-panel comics; especially when they deceptively hold snarky social commentary and surreal humour. This weekend, Symmetry Entertainment and THE ARTBISHOP are coming together to present Joan Cornella’s debut solo exhibition in Singapore – his only stop in Southeast Asia, given the exhibition will be held exclusively in Hong Kong and Singapore. If you’re a hardcore fan, there are still a few tickets left for a signing session on 25 June (available here) where you’ll get to meet the man himself. The exhibition’s a short run of 10 days only, so be sure to pop by for an up-close-and-personal experience with the cartoonist’s best works; and pick up some originals, limited edition prints and souvenirs while you’re there.

Time: 12pm – 8pm
Venue: Far Out! 188-8 Tanjong Katong Road, Singapore 436990

If you’re one for pretty little things, prepare to be indulged by the massive selection of beads, silk, and metallic threads on display at the Peranakan Museum; millions, to be exact. In the museum’s latest exhibition, it’s all about celebrating the beauty of the traditional Peranakan art of embroidery and beadwork, with almost 200 intricately handcrafted artworks telling the intriguing story of the Peranakan Chinese.
The showcase will also display some of the earliest dated embroidered and beaded objects in the world. Particularly, keep your eyes peeled for one of the key highlights – a beaded wedding bed valence from the National Museum of World Cultures in the Netherlands; also the earliest reliably dated embroidery on display, with roots dating back to 1848 in Indonesia. Divided into five sections ranging from auspicious emblems and symbols, to materials, to the makers and their methods, the show will explore the diverse styles of Indonesia, Malacca, Singapore and Penang, so there’s definitely something for everyone – even if you don’t have a little Nyonya blood in you.
Date: 24 June 2016 to 26 March 2017
Opening hours: 10am – 7pm (Mon to Sun)
Venue: Peranakan Museum, 39 Armenian Street, Singapore 179941

5 Essential Brushes You Need

Previously, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of what we think are the main uses of each make up brush. That long list filled with brushes sure looked terrifying, especially if you’re planning to purchase all of them. If you’ve the spare dough, go ahead. But for those who want to keep things simple; we’ve rounded up five brushes of what we’d think are the absolute essentials, so you can zero in on these.
1. Foundation brush

M.A.C 190 Foundation Brush, M.A.C counters. Ecotools Foundation Brush, $12.30, Guardian.

Even if you’re using a BB cushion, a foundation brush is definitely a handy tool as you can also use it to apply your liquid primer that will ensure your face stays smooth and flawless the entire day.
2. Kabuki brush

Zoeva 120 Kabuki Brush, $27.99, Sephora. Make Up For Ever 124 Powder Kabuki Brush, $88, Sephora.

Probably the most functional brush of the lot, this multi-purpose brush can be used for applying basically any types of powder. Its short stem, dense bristles and rounded head will definitely give you a good coverage and flawless complexion. Also, since it’s small and compact, you can carry one around with you easily – great for on the go touch ups!
3. Angled brush

Sigma Beauty F23 Soft Angled Contour Brush, $39, Sephora. Urban Decay Naked Flushed Double-Ended Brush, $39, Sephora.

No need for explanations, you definitely need one of these to either contour your cheek bones or apply blush to your cheeks. Get the most out of this brush by using both sides of brush.
4. Eyeshadow/Blending brush

Sigma Beauty E37 All Over Blend, $20.70, Sephora. 3CE Eye Blending Brush, $21, Sephora.

For those who are only looking for a simple eyeshadow technique on your eyelids, you’ll only need one brush to make your eyes pop. Also, a great way to utilise this brush (after it’s cleaned properly) is to apply lip colours for a beautiful soft lip effect.
5. Brow brush and comb

BrowBrow comb
Real Techniques Lash-Brow Groomer, $15, Sephora. Sephora Collection Brow Brush #101, $19, Sephora.

No matter how on point your brows are after a session of tweezing or threading, you’ll realise that a brow brush is essential to keep your arches neat and in shape. You’ll also need the comb to get rid of the hideous mascara clumps that are actually pretty obvious, so no, you shouldn’t ignore them. You can see this brush as a two-in-one deal, really.
