NET-A-PORTER Launches Kate Moss for Equipment

If we were given a choice to raid any celebrity’s closet, it will definitely be Kate Moss. Even after 25 years, the innumerable influence she holds over the fashion world still remains ubiquitous today. We all remember the dark times when we broke our banks for Kate Moss for Topshop and when she took over our lives with her collaboration for the Mango Fall 2015 campaign with Cara Delevingne. Finally, the fateful day has arrived; Kate Moss is back again with another awesome collaboration — this time with the illustrious brand, Equipment. Exclusively available on NET-A-PORTER, this collection will only be around for a limited period of just two weeks. Act fast now; even if it means splurging a little because come on, it’s Kate Moss.
Combining Equipment’s modern androgynous luxe fashion and the inimitable style of the British fashion icon, we wouldn’t expect any less from Kate Moss for Equipment. Get down to nostalgia with the bold statements that Moss embodied in the 1990s – from her waifish dresses, to the grungy ‘heroin chic’ fashion and the classic trademark looks that will never go out of style. Even though we are all unable to achieve her size zero figure, we can now live vicariously with this collection of clothing.
With Moss at the helm of the creative direction, we get an intimate glimpse of her private world. Shot in black and white at her secluded country estate in the Cotsworld, the campaign features Susie Cave, the wife of the musician and artist Nick Cave, and Ella Richards, the granddaughter of The Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards – fully bringing Moss’s elegance to live.

From bold pieces to basic wardrobe staples, this collection easily appeals to all. Look forward to some of the quintessential pieces that the British fashion icon wore – slinky slip dresses, leopard prints and wide leg trousers. This collection also features David Bowie-inspired lightning bold prints that lends edginess and eccentricity to these exclusive pieces. Featuring a rich colour palette consisting of mainly staple colours such as red, black, white and grey, Moss infuses her iconic flair and style throughout the collection, while maintaining Equipment’s signature looks. We especially love the olive military jacket that will definitely go well with the slip dresses, and the leopard prints trousers that can be worn when we feel ~fancy~. Ugh, decisions. Looks like it’s time to dig out our savings (again).

YouTuber Makeup Collaborations Your Soul Will Thank You For

If there’s one good trend to have come out of the 21st Century explosion of influencers and YouTubers – it’s affordable YouTuber makeup collaborations. It’s a wonderful way to recognise the hard work and talents of genuinely invested beauty YouTubers in the industry; paving the way for makeup newbies, and inspiring viewers everywhere. So obviously we were thrilled to hear about the slew of already-released, and upcoming beauty collabs set to release this year – touched by the hands of some of our favourite online beauty gurus. Time to dig into that rainy day fund, folks.

Clothesencounters x Colourpop: Jenn Ne Sais Quoi

Available at colourpopcosmetics.com

First up on our list of must-haves is the newly released collab between YouTube doll Jenn Im and everyone’s favourite new Californian makeup brand – which dropped just a week ago. Comprising a warm-toned, red-hued eyeshadow quad (called Jenn Ne Sais Quad, no less), a lippie pencil, ultra matte liquid lipstick (both in Dohee), and a Matte X lippie stick (Jenneration X), the collection is basically a starter kit to nailing Jenn’s signature rosy, coral makeup. Needless to say, we’ve already placed our orders for the set, even if it did mean paying for extra agent fees and freight forwarding. So worth it.

Jaclyn Hill x BECCA

$58, available at Sephora
It’s truly a wonder if you’ve never watched a JaclynHill1 video in your life; the professional makeup artist has over 3 million subscribers and counting, and a lovably down-to-earth attitude to boot. Still, you might have heard of her collaboration with BECCA Cosmetics, in the form of the beautiful shimmery highlighter in the shade ‘Pressed Champagne Pop’. The Shimmering Skin Perfector has received glowing reviews (hehe) for being the perfect subtle shimmer to add to your cheekbones, and especially for achieving Jaclyn’s constant on-point glow. It’s a lot to drop on just a highlighter; but a worthy price to pay for feeling like a total rock star.

US$52, currently OOS

And just when you thought Jaclyn’s beautiful champagne shimmer ended there – she released a whole face palette. The limited edition Champagne Collection Face Palette features five shades of highlighter and blush to illuminate all skintones, and come in a creamy powder consistency for easy strobing. Unfortunately it’s all sold out online in the States at the moment, but look out for when it restocks officially on June 16.

KathleenLights x OFRA

L-R: Miami Fever, Havana Nights, US$19.90, available at ofracosmetics.com

We all know Kathleen Lights and her collaboration with Colourpop, but have you seen her earlier collab with OFRA Cosmetics? The brand, started by therapist and makeup artist Ofra Gaito, is most famous for its long lasting liquid lipsticks – which Kathleen herself has sworn by for their durability and comfort, long before she was contacted for a collab. It’s a short and sweet partnership, with just two shades (in Miami Fever and Havana Nights); but the brown-hued colours are beautiful and perfect for day and/or night, which is probably what the perky beauty YouTuber had in mind.

MannyMua x OFRA

US$19.90 for one, US$49.70 for set, available at ofracosmetics.com

OFRA’s certainly got their eye on top-gunning YouTubers; the second and latest collaboration pulls in Manny Gutierrez of MannyMua733 for three more liquid lipsticks in the season’s trendiest nude-mauve shades. Known for his diva-esque looks and perfectly sculpted pouts, Manny’s three OFRA shades Hypno, Aries, and Charmed have quickly become hot favourites on the site – and recently became permanent shades in the liquid lipstick line. Get them separately or in a bundle at 3 for US$35, with the code MANNYMUA to save 30% off full price. It’s also great to know that OFRA is 100% vegan and cruelty-free, so you can swipe on as much as you want without feeling guilty.

Jeffree Star x Morphe
Alternative 90’s kids might remember Jeffree Star when he was a singer-songwriter sporting daring punk-rock makeup looks on- and offstage, but everyone today knows him for his very own ace makeup line Jeffree Star Cosmetics. And with good reason – in just two years, the makeup diva’s Velour Liquid Lipsticks have taken the world by storm for their long-wearing formula and insane(ly wonderful) range of colours; perfect for anyone bored of the usual safe pinks.

A video posted by Jeffree Star (@jeffreestar) on

Jeffree recently released an all-new, first-ever eyeshadow palette Beauty Killer, with ten bold shades in extreme pigment bound to stun; but that’s not what we’re here for. Props to him for a super successful makeup line, but really, we’re dying over the announcement of a Barbie-pink Jeffree Star collaboration with Morphe. Makeup professionals and artists alike swear by Morphe’s brushes – Jeffree included – so a fabulous, girly chrome spin on their usual black-and-white face tools is possibly the most exciting thing to happen this year. No official release date yet; all we know is to start bracing our wallets for when “Summer16” rolls around.

NikkieTutorials x Too Faced

Any regular YouTube binge-watcher will know Nikkie and her glam-queen makeup tutorials. The contour and highlight pro often raves about Too Faced makeup (so do we actually), so is it really any surprise when both parties confirmed a collaboration? News on the “exclusive kit” is still extremely hush-hush, but we’re already excited to see what’s to come this Fall. We’re expecting bronzers, dramatic shadows, and a heck ton of highlighter.

grav3yardgirl x Tarte Cosmetics

A photo posted by grav3yardgirl (@grav3yardgirl) on

US$45, available at tartecosmetics.com

Alright, we’re playing favourites here – but we saved the best for last! Quirky and lovable Bunny from Grav3yard Girl announced, out of nowhere, a full makeup collaboration with Tarte Cosmetics – which sold out in its pre-sale just a few days ago. The collection includes two Tarteist creamy matte lip paints, but the real star of the collection is a drop-dead gorgeous eyeshadow and face palette aptly named Swamp Queen (Swamp family members will understand; hands up y’all!) Jeffree Star recently did a makeup tutorial using the palette, and Bunny herself previewed the collection on her own channel; it’s safe to say we’re already grossly in love. The shades in Swamp Queen are true to Tarte’s typical matte and shimmer tones, but with Bunny’s touch, in names that will definitely please regular viewers – Dogman, Sippy Sippy, Sassy Bun, and Gator Wings are just some of the 15 shades. The full collection will be restocked officially on the Tarte Cosmetics website on 6 June, which is just a nerve-wracking three days away. We’re anticipating a Kylie-style sold-out situation, so you might want to start setting your alarms to U.S. timing, everyone.

Honey Butter Chicken & More at Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory

Whether you’re a die-hard K-pop/drama fan or not, you might know about the whole Honey Butter craze that has been sweeping over South Korea for a while now — it kinda started from packets of Calbee chips, usually sold out or ridiculously expensive online we’re told, which then went on to adorn ice-cream, fries, nuts, even hand creams and lip masks from the beauty side of things. Think of it like the Korean version of our salted egg yolk everything.
So yep, it was kinda a big deal when we heard that Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory, or Chir Chir for short, are serving their delicious, easy-to-eat stacked chicken tenders, Honey Butter style. Crispy, juicy, sweet and savoury all at once.

Chir Chir - Honey Butter Chicken        Chir Chir - Rosemary Chicken

Granted, it’s kind of a weird flavour to get used to if you’re not a sweet tooth, but no doubt, it’s addictive. The Honey Butter Chicken dish ($28.90) is served hefty on a wooden board, great for tucking in with your friends. We’ve got crispy battered chicken, potato wedges and pan-fried topokki glazed in their generous signature honey butter sauce, with plenty of honey butter seasoning, dried cranberries and sliced almonds to top it off. You’ve also got a choice of dunking the meat in a honeyed garlic mayo dip — they really went all the way with this one. The fried rice cakes were great to nibble on, but nothing beat the chicken of course, all tender and fragrant and fresh. 100% would go back to eat this again.
Another thing you could order, that’s really from the existing menu, is the Rosemary Chicken ($29.90). The restaurant kinda prides itself on the “fusion” side of things, though with all the authentic flavours, and this borrows from the more Western idea of oven roasts, while the chicken has been put through 12 hours of marinating, which translates to a fragrant, herbal surprise on the palate. The catch is there’s a side of salt-baked egg and baked potato here.
Chir Chir - Topokki & Cheese Chir Chir - Spicy Topokki Chir Chir - Spicy Seafood Soup

Then there are the relatively new side dishes too. The Topokki & Cheese ($9.90) is a hearty starter that really can’t go wrong, not when you have these chewy Korean rice cakes sitting in a sea of creamy cheeses, garnished with chicken ham and crunchy bacon bits. The two spicy additions make for a more varied experience too, compared to just hitting up a KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) outlet. There’s the Spicy Topokki ($15.90), filled with rice cakes, fishcake, sweet potatoes, crispy Cajun fried squid, and a deep-fried egg in gochujang (red pepper paste) sauce, while you can add on breaded chicken tenders at $4 to make it more substantial. Then, the Spicy Seafood Soup ($26.90)is a rich clam-based broth that’s loaded with glass noodles, mussels, prawns, crayfish and a whole squid. Obviously, share all these if you’re already springing for the chicken.
Chir Chir - Raspberry Double Smoothie            Chir Chir - Mojito Double Smoothie            Chir Chir - Aqua Double Smoothie

Finally, wash it all down with these supersize smoothies — either a Raspberry, Aqua or Mojito Double Smoothie ($12.90 each). Each one of them is refreshing, especially since there’s mango purée, which is thoughtfully dressed up with flavoured ice slushes including mixed tropical fruits for Aqua, and lime for Mojito. There’s also the option of adding Soju shots to make it a tad more exciting.

NANTA (Cookin’)
1457417114985

Take it from someone who’s watched it firsthand in Seoul – back for another run in Singapore, this South Korean theatrical cooking show is certainly worth the hype. Described as a MasterChef-meets-Stomp extravaganza, NANTA features skilled chef-performers who bring their kitchen expertise to the table – literally. It’s a high-energy performance of flying utensils, flaming knives, and real, edible food as the chefs showcase their impressive samulnori skills, from a traditional Korean genre of percussion music. Pictures and trailers do zero justice, and they definitely won’t prepare you for the musical spectacle you’ll be presented with. Pro tip: don’t come on an empty stomach; the antics will surely whet your appetite.
Date: 3 to 5 June 2016
Time: 8pm (Fri), 2pm & 8pm (Sat), and 2pm (Sun)
Venue: Resorts World Theatre
Admission: $48, $68, $98, $118, $128

Pink Dot 2016
10955708_10153174355753304_1775273610512037682_o

This Saturday, come together to support the freedom to love at the annual Pink Dot rally held in Hong Lim Park. The day’s events include speeches by prominent members of the LGBT community, booths by 25 different community support groups, and performances by local artists Charlie Lim, Vandetta, and more. Ambassadors ShiGGa Shay and Liu Ling Ling take the stage as well, along with 2015 Ambassador Hirzi of popular YouTube duo MunahHirziOfficial. This year, look out specifically for volunteers who’ll be handing out placards – for you to pen down your thoughts or a message of love; before the day ends with a beautiful communal raising of the placards. Don’t forget to come dressed in pink, as a pledge to protecting the right to love, regardless of gender and sexual orientation.
In this annual celebration of tolerance, acceptance, and universal love, it’s important to make one thing clear – Pink Dot isn’t and shouldn’t be simply a “free concert” or form of weekend entertainment to pass the time on. Overcoming resentment begins with genuine understanding, so if you’re a curious first-timer looking to get in on the “festivities”, come with an open mind and heart, and leave the regressive discrimination and fear behind.
Date: 4 June 2016
Time: 3pm till late
Venue: Hong Lim Park
Admission: Free

LUISAVIAROMA's Firenze4Ever Event Is Set To Inspire With Hope And Love

While Florence is known to draw couples destined for a romantic getaway, the story of how it came to be the flooded city is undeniably tragic. In 1966, the city was flooded by the Arno River, causing the deaths of 101 people, along with massive damage and destruction, particularly to a large number of masterpieces of art and rare books. However, once word spread of the flood, many young people lent their aid during the disaster, coming from all over the world to help rebuild Florence.
History, it seems, has a habit of repeating itself. The current refugee crisis presents a challenge that our generation is compelled to face, and LUISAVIAROMA’s highly anticipated event – Firenze4Ever – is extending its hand in aid. Organised for the first time in June 2010 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of LUISAVIAROMA.COM, the bi-annual event brings together fashion, music, design and contemporary art. This year, being held in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Florence flood, the event’s theme of “Underwater Love” will be the inspiration for numerous project and exhibitions around the Arno River. The event also aims to raise public awareness for the refugee crisis, and will feature several charity events.
Here’s what to expect at the event from 13-17 June:

VISTA LATERALE

Everything Starts With A Hug
This project foresees welcoming, training and employing migrants within companies from various sectors. The companies involved in this initiative will commit to donate a contribution based on their annual turnover, assign professionals to support the training courses and employ a number of migrants who have taken part in this training.

The Bridge of Love
Conceived and designed by architect Claudio Nardi, this installation symbolises the will to provide hope to people in difficult situations. The conceptual installation features the two banks of the river connected by floating cubes on suspended bridges. The bridge will be inaugurated on the 13th of June with a gala dinner and VIP Lounge, where guests will be able to enjoy performances from international music artists during the Underwater Love Party. All proceeds from the gala dinner will be donated to The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) – in particular, the Lifeline Jordan project that provides direct economic assistance for families of Syrian refugees who have found asylum in Jordan.

Design on Water
Following the inauguration, the Bridge of Love will be used as a high concept exhibition space from 14-17 June. The exhibition, Design on Water will feature numerous designers, artists and galleries and their interpretations of the theme “Underwater Love”. Six cubes will be outfitted with various interpretations of water: a symbol of destruction and renewal, hope and solidarity. Visitors will also be guided through the exhibition with the curation of LUISAVIAROMA.

LUISAVIAROMA, 13th Edition of Firenze4Ever: Underwater Love, 13-17 June, “Design on Water” open from 14 – 17 June, 6pm – 10pm, Entrance at Lungarno Serristori – Piazza Poggi. More information available at the event website. Luisaviaroma.com.

We Can't Resist This Nautical-Themed Makeup Collection

If we can’t book ourselves a cruise holiday, we’re bringing the cruise into our makeup bags instead with this irrepressibly cheery Summer makeup collection from Laneige. The nautical theme is evident here, with the iconic red and blue stripes covering the packaging on the body cushion, eyeshadow palette and nail polishes that make up the range, as well as with the beach-ready hues the eye and nail colours come in.

First things first, yes, that’s a cushion for your body. We’ve freaked out over it before, but to reiterate, if you can’t live without your Laneige BB Cushion, you need to try the Sparkling Body Cushion for the rest of your body. It’s not meant to conceal so much as highlight, with rose gold pearlescent particles that you can pat onto areas such as your shoulders, chest and arms. The inclusion of sparkling water and aloe in the ingredients list means the formula helps soothe and cool down the skin upon application, making this perfect for packing along in your beach bag.

We’re also getting starry-eyed over the Marine Girl Boy Eyeshadow Palette, which features six shimmery pastel and metallic hues that promise high colour payoff. They’ll allow you to transit easily from a day to night look – it’s just a matter of layering up on the shimmer on the outer corners of the lids for something more glamorous.

And since we all can’t resist new nail colours, especially when they come in packaging as cute as this, we’re stoked that the Marine Nail Kit includes four nautical shades – royal red, marine blue, white and light blue – plus a handy stencil and decorative stickers to nail the perfect nautical-themed manicure. Ships ahoy!

The Most Exciting Food at The 2016 Hokkaido Fair – Starting Tomorrow

Here’s one reason to head down to Isetan this weekend – the all-time favourite Hokkaido Fair is back, and happening at three Isetan Singapore outlets! Like the rest of this food-crazed island, we’re a huge fan of Japanese cuisine; whether it’s fresh sashimi as raw as your untended feelings, or sweet and fluffy street snacks made with fresh Hokkaido milk – we’re there. Expect tons of yums at this year’s Hokkaido Fair then, which takes place over the course of a month to bring you your favourite Hokkaido snacks, plus some exciting new additions.

M8 P18 - P19 HOKKAIDO FAIR M8 P18 - P19 HOKKAIDO FAIR2

The Hokkaido Fair 2016 will take place at three different locations:
3 to 14 June: Isetan Scotts Supermarket
17 to 28 June: Isetan Tampines, Tampines Mall Level 1 Atrium
1 to 10 July: Isetan Jurong East Supermarket
And there’s tons to see and eat.

For one, don’t be surprised to find that the fair isn’t just about food. A highlight at the Hokkaido fair is Hokkaido Junbayu Honpo’s famed horse oil (hear us out) that’s a hit in Japan for being an excellent moisturising skincare product. The formula contains premium horse placenta serum made of essence extracted from pure Hokkaido thoroughbred racing horses, and helps with cell regeneration, for both adults and children.

But of course, you’re here reading this to check out the munchies on offer; and we aim to please. Aside from the usual raw fish and seafood, check out Yamacho – for seasoned scallops with a mild but sweet taste, perfect as a side dish for sake and wine (also available at the Fair); or a refreshing main all on its own.

And for those with a sweet tooth – a huge fave is *Hokkaido Kokubo, which sells pumpkin tarts and roll cakes in a variety of frozen options. Made with Hokkaido fresh milk as the main ingredient, both desserts are bonafide crowd-pleasers with their rich tastes and smooth textures. The roll cakes, in particular, come in an assortment of flavours like chocolate, milk, green tea, and rare cheese; but we’ve heard good things about the Mochi Mochi Roll Cake – layered with fresh cream for the perfect sinful treat.

*Not available at Isetan Scotts (3 to 14 June)

Plus, a new addition primed to be a big hit at the Fair is the *Sapporo Hiragishi; less beer and more family-friendly snack, we’re surprised to find. Named after a subway station in Sapporo, Hokkaido in Japan, the brand’s prime offering is juice jelly and soy bean puddings – for those who just want a light tease to the taste buds.
The juice jelly is 100% juice from Hokkaido and available in six different flavours (go for the peach, we’ve been told); plus, it’s even suitable for 6-month old babies. The soy bean puddings are made using Hokkaido soy beans, and come in mango, strawberry, and melon flavours. It’s a no-brainer that the Hokkaido melon is the most popular here in Singapore, but obviously we’re still going to try everything.

*Not available at Isetan Scotts (3 to 14 June)

A Guide To Dealing With Your Favourite But Problematic Celebrity

Celebrities have been known to land themselves in all kinds of trouble: plagiarism, cheating on their significant other, violent confrontations in public, etc. You’re already probably thinking of stars like Justin Bieber, Ben Affleck, Jay Z…the list goes on. But in a time where social media powerhouses like Twitter and Facebook practically run the world, it’s increasingly difficult for celebs to avoid any kind of scrutiny for their actions, no matter how seemingly inconsequential. At the beginning of the year, Jennifer Lawrence caused quite a bit of stir when footage of her interrupting a foreign reporter to tell him not use his phone while he was speaking to her went viral. The incident occurred during a Golden Globes press conference, and Lawrence was the subject of much debate as soon as the video was released. Was she rude? Was she ‘just joking’? The internet raged on.
But this article isn’t going to be a laundry list of controversial things that celebs have said/done. Heck, there’s even a whole blog dedicated to that stuff. This is about what happens to the fans of these celebrities when things get ugly – or, more specifically, when they become ‘problematic’. Like J-Law, stars fall from grace all the time, but how do you handle it when that star is the one you’ve come to call your favourite?
****
1. Assess how problematic your fave celeb really is.
You don’t have to tear down those posters just yet! Sometimes the ‘mistake’ really isn’t a mistake at all. It’s easy for the media to blow things out of proportion, so do some proper research if you can. Were they quoted out of context? Were they acting in self-defense? It’s important to assess if the celebrity is really at fault here. Unfortunately, it can be rather difficult to get past this stage because of the amount of (sometimes fabricated) info that tends to fly around, but there are really only two possibilities at the end of the day. Either a) the celeb you love isn’t at fault! or b)…

2. So your fave celeb really is problematic.
It’s perfectly fine to be upset, disappointed, or even angry. Your favourite celebrity, is, after all, probably the one you look up to or seek inspiration from. It’s difficult to see our heroes making mistakes. But strip away the titles and your fave celeb probably isn’t that different from you or anyone else. They’re bound to mess up at any point, just like us, and it can be even more challenging for them when people won’t let them move past those mistakes. The need for fame and fortune can also take over their lives, and celebs can end up making huge and increasingly outrageous mistakes just for the material payoff.

3. Should you un-fave?
If you find yourself faced with this scenario, it’s important to note that your favourite celebrity won’t feel the emotional loss of you no longer being their fan, so this decision is really between you and yourself. There’s nothing wrong with deciding that you would rather look up to someone else. However, if your fave celeb is beginning to show signs that they’re not stopping their streak of ‘bad’ behaviour, it might be in your best interest to walk away. Celebrities who are openly racist/sexist/etc. are probably falling more towards infamy than fame, and it’s important to know the difference.
On the other hand, it’s also fine to continue admiring a celebrity simply because they’re good at their craft. Plenty of musicians/actors/entertainers have become various types of rotten over the years, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they produce bad art, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that you engaging with their art will result with you becoming ‘infected’ by their personalities.
But at the end of the day, your favourite celebrity shouldn’t and doesn’t define who you are and how you behave. It’s almost impossible to escape criticism nowadays – stars who don’t cause controversy are even sometimes labelled as ‘bland’ or ‘boring’. So if you could care less about what people think, having a problematic fave isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the world.

5 Mexican Places in Singapore To Heal The Chipotle-Sized Hole In Your Heart

Ever had a quick Mex fix at Chipotle in the States? Then you’ll understand our pain – and how infuriating it is to have to live a Chipotle-less life back home in Singapore. Forget the fancy dining places that charge you $20 for a plate of two tacos and some artfully dribbled guac; what we’re hankering after is the quick and easy Subway-style takeaway characteristic of the true Chipotle experience. It came to a point where we just couldn’t stand another day in the absence of a hearty burrito rice bowl; so we took the time to hunt down the best fuss-free, Chipotle-style Mexican joints on the island – worth every glorious calorie.

Guzman y Gomez

Quick Duolingo lesson of the day: ‘Y’ means “and” in Spanish – so we’re guessing Guzman and Gomez are the representative names founder Steven Marks chose to ‘honour old friends and introduce Mexican food and Latin culture to the world’. The New Yorker first started the business when he moved to Australia and became frustrated by the lack of Mexican options; so you can bet that GYG gets it in trying to recreate the Chipotle magic. Serving up build-your-own burritos (starts at $10.90 for regular), burrito bowls ($10.90), and tacos (2 for $8.50), the portions are generous and flavourful – and instant, to boot. Previously a luxury available chiefly to those working in the CBD, GYG’s no-frills, quick service is now accessible to those in the West too (hello Star Vista!) A newly opened outlet in Pasir Panjang means the Easties can get in on the yums too; but really, we’re just excited to see this chain grow.
Address: Asia Square Tower 2 #02-11 | Chevron House #B1-07 | The Star Vista #01-32 | Mapletree Business City
Opening hours:
The Star Vista: 10.30am – 9.30pm daily

Muchachos
12295519_1219152928111164_4199636567842767662_n

Burrrrrr(p)itos, please! Everyone knows Muchachos, especially for their monster-sized burritos that are large enough for sharing. Slide down the “factory line” of carbs, fillings, and sauces; Subway-style for the authentic Mexican fast-food joint experience. For a sure-fire winning meal, load up the soft tortillas with rice, beans, your choice of meat, and salsa. And guacamole, of course! For first-time Mexican diners, don’t let the daunting appearance of the black beans frighten you – they add a surprisingly powerful punch of flavour and texture. Word of caution though: mightier than the regular bean, these do give you gas.
Address: 22 Keong Saik Road, Singapore 089129
Opening hours: 12pm – 4pm & 6pm – 10pm (Mon to Thurs), 12pm – 12mn (Fri & Sat)

Baja Fresh
11253734_1049706601707572_6143931365759929109_n

If you’ve got some real time to kill, the dining experience at Baja Fresh is less do-it-yourself and more casual restaurant, which makes it a great after-school/work chilling spot. Located just opposite SMU, the joint offers student discounts for anyone with a valid student ID. Come for the typical Mex fare (tacos, bowls, burritos all priced from $10.95), but stay for the full variety on offer – quesadillas, fajitas, and a fully stocked, free-flow salsa bar. Picking a main might leave you a little frazzled, but dessert is straight to the point, and definitely hits the sweet spot – churros ($4.50) and chocolate sauce ($2); what else?
Address: 9 Bras Basah Road, Rendezvous Gallery #01-03, Singapore 189558
Opening hours: 8.30am – 10pm (Mon to Thurs), 8.30am – 11pm (Fri to Sun)

Mex Out
taco-creative

At first glance, Mex Out wins our pick for best ambiance. The décor is sleek and chic, and reminds us surprisingly of Korean style cafes. Spring for a burrito ($9.90 for small, $12.90 for large) if you’re just looking to fill up, or a set of tacos (3 for $12.90) for sharing; we’d recommend the rice bowl that comes intriguingly in a silver mess tin – great for the novelty and photos. Located in the CBD area as well, the restaurant makes a choice hangout for after-work drinks – there’s Corona, and margaritas and sangria are available in both jugs and glasses. Tip: go on Taco Tuesday, for happy hour $3.50 tacos ($3.50 for premium fillings) from 6 to 10pm.

Stuff’d

Our latest discovery in fast food Mexican joints, Stuff’d is one of those blink-and-miss-it food kiosks regularly found at the basement of shopping malls – for those who are really on the go. That said, keep your eyes peeled for this humble chain; specialising in Mexican and Turkish fare, Stuff’d delivers hefty helpings of burritos and kebabs (to leave you stuffed!) at super wallet-friendly prices. Following the same Subway-style service, you can choose your own meats and ingredients for a burrito, bowl, quesadilla, or kebab – all for under $10, drink and side included. The chain is slowly expanding to more malls; with prices like that, we’re obviously thrilled.

All The Cold Brew Coffee You Should Know About

never underestimate a good cup of coffee. it’s the beverage of choice, the first one we reach for in the morning, and the only one that can keep us alive too, both in those early hours and up-all-night tv marathons. except, the next time you’re feeling the heat from just walking out of your house, instead of an iced latte, reach for a bottle of cold brew coffee.
smoother, less acidic, but more potent than just pouring regular coffee over ice, the process calls for steeping coffee beans in water for a long time in order to extract the best flavours from the usually single-origin beans. this means that it appeases coffee connoisseurs and casual drinkers all at once – no wonder they’re all the rage. By Amelia Tan

Apart from how cold brew coffee is a welcome drink under our blazing heat, it’s supposed to taste better too, or at least different, if you like coffee that’s “smoother, with less of the harsh acidity that may come with hot brewed coffee”. That’s according to Shawn Tan, Head Barista at independent coffee boutique Papa Palheta, also a leading establishment in our local coffee scene of “third wave coffee” that’s all about artisanal brews. Here, he answers a few of our burning questions about cold brews.

What exactly is cold brew coffee?

Cold brew is, essentially, coffee that is brewed with room temperature or cold water, over a long period of time, ranging anywhere from 6 hours to even 24 or 48 hours. This is as opposed to the typical hot brewed coffees, that are brewed with hot water.

Where did the idea for a cold brew first originate from – is it a country, region, or a particular cafe?

It’s probably quite difficult to trace the first origins of the cold brew, but some prominent specialty brands in USA have been popularizing cold brews for years, for example, Stumptown Coffee Roasters and Blue Bottle Coffee.

What’s the process of cold brew coffee like – and how does this process affect the taste or strength of the coffee?

Our cold brew is steeped for 12 hours overnight, with a coarse grind setting, then bottled and served fresh in the morning. When you brew coffee at different temperatures, you extract different compounds from the coffee at different rates. According to the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), studies have shown that bitterness and astringency decrease when coffee is brewed at low temperatures. Most would find that cold brew coffee is smoother, with less of the harsh acidity that may come with hot brewed coffee. Cold brew typically uses more coffee as compared to a cup of hot brewed coffee, so naturally there is more caffeine in a cup of the same size.

What’s the difference between the usual ‘black’ and ‘white’ cold brews?

Some cafes would brew their cold brew and add in cream and sugar syrup, then bottle it. Over at Chye Seng Huat Hardware (CSHH) Coffee Bar, we prefer to serve a good unadulterated black cold brew, but offer our guests the convenience of adjusting their cold brew coffee to their taste.

How about making your own cold brew at home – what kind of gadgets or machines would you recommend?

The simplest method of making cold brew at home would be to put ground coffee in a container, add room temperature water, and allow to steep overnight. Of course, you would need a way to strain out the ground coffee as to get a less gritty cup. Some may use a french press, or a sieve. Alternatively, one could simply pick up one of our cold brew pots at our retail section at CSHH, which comes with a built-in filter, perfect for home use.

What’s the best way to store it?

Coffee should typically be stored in closed containers, and kept chilled as soon as possible, to prevent oxidation that occurs at higher temperatures.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware

Peer behind the old-school shutters of this former hardware store, and you’ll find a coffee joint for people who take their caffeine very seriously. The flagship store of Papa Palheta also houses a roastery and a 360-degree coffee bar in its industrial-look space – but more than being another hipster haunt, what keeps ’em (and us) coming back is the coffee. One of our earliest cold brew experiences was this, served in an apothecary-type bottle, which houses an unadulterated black cold brew that’s brewed daily, steeped for 12 hours overnight then served fresh the next day. Theirs uses single-origin coffee, the Suke Quto from Ethiopia, Sidama, which has a pleasant acidity, with a nice round sweetness that tastes great over ice, straight from the bottle, or with a dash of milk. It’s a little on the potent side, which definitely pleases us.

Old Hen Coffee Bar

It was a picture of coffee in a dark glass bottle that really enticed us, before we immediately made plans to head to the cafe on a Sunday afternoon – and weren’t disappointed. Their popular chilled bottles use either the Four Chairs blend by Nylon Coffee Roasters for the unsweetened black version, or the Raven blend by Oriole Coffee Roasters for the white, which results in a light, more rounded flavour for both; the white brew was definitely more milky than the others we tried, which was welcome on a hot day. If your friend’s not a coffee-lover like you though, rest easy because they can get a non-caffeinated bottle of their own too. The cafe serves a cold dark cocoa drink as well, a lovely rich beverage that we’d easily want to stock our fridges with and drink any time of the day.

Dapper Coffee

Hit ’em up if you’re in need of a caffeine fix around the CBD area – they promise the crispest, cleanest-tasting cold brew around. Using Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans, the coffee has a light and refreshing texture, yet with great depth of flavour. All this, because of their extremely high-tech processes. Instead of steeping coffee, they use vacuum pressure to speed up the process, and place coffee and water in a low pressure environment (or, a rather intimidating machine) so it takes all of… 60 seconds. Perfect for their time-starved patrons. On top of that, for a clear blend, they use organic protein instead of filter paper, which sounds like something only seen in fine-dining restaurants, while the drink’s served like a glass of Old Fashioned.

Taisho Black

Oriole Coffee + Bar

The first time we tried this was a matter of convenience – there was no time for a proper sit-down at the cosy cafe – but you can bet that their cold brew coffee has been our regular order since. One of the more popular ones around, their bottles, called Taisho, named since iced coffee was first introduced in Japan in the early 1900s, are unique concoctions dreamed up by their baristas, and roasted at their own roasting facility for maximum quality control. Stocked at both the Somerset and Capitol Piazza branches, the black version is brewed with Burundi Sehe single-origin beans, while the white version is made with their unique Raven blend. There’s also a non-dairy version of the Taisho M.A.D Milk, coffee that’s sweetened with a natural nut milk of macadamia, almonds and dates. All of them taste light and balanced on the tongue, but are pretty substantial fuel that deserve a place beside your nice weekend brunch.

The Laneway Market

When we first headed to this gorgeous hideaway in the East, complete with dried flowers hanging from the ceiling, we were first blown away by the earthy, aromatic Dashi Risotto. Then came the coffee. While they only do it in one style, the White Cold Brew deserves mention, first because it’s brewed using their house blend of beans from Sumatra Lintong, Ethiopian Sidamo and Brazilian Yellow Bourbon, and secondly, it’s like a journey on your tongue – a slight sweetness on your first sip, followed by a whiff of wine and cherries, before ending off with a smooth finish reminiscent of dark cocoa. You’ll be tempted to want to take the bottle home, but the cafe gives off such a nice rustic charm, you’d wanna hang out all day too.

Cold Brew 1

Joe & Dough

It’s easy to guess what this homegrown chain cafe’s serving from its very name – why, good crafted coffee and baked goods of course, including wholesome sandwiches and cakes. So when their new concept outlet opened this year, they were eager to introduce new bottles of smooth cold brew that tapped on their rich expertise, both of which use single-origin beans steeped for more than 20 hours. The Black brew features beans from San Lorenzo, Costa Rica, and has a sweet malt-brown sugar aroma that’s complex then finishes with a hint of grapefruit at the end; as for the White, beans from Alice Estate, Brazil lend more nut and milk chocolate flavours, as well as a quiet herbal complexity. Pretty deep stuff, but all we’re saying is that they taste really good on the palate.

Habitat Coffee

Probably the newest kid on the block in terms of bottled coffee, they only recently launched these in May, with the benefit of a more convenient brew that you can take away, enjoy on-the-go, or even have for later since they have a five to seven day shelf life. We’re long-time fans of the cafe since they’re located relatively near our office, and a main fixture at Upper Thomson that’s great for the times when we’re taking a break from our convenient kopi peng. So hear us out when we say this: we’ll gladly vouch for their Carpenter’s Blend, roasted weekly and locally and used across all their coffee, including the Cold White Coffee. As for the regular version, they tend to switch the single-origins up every week, so every bottle’s really a whole new experience.

Tanuki Raw

You might be more familiar with Tanuki’s savoury offerings, the kind of indulgent but yummy fare we can’t stop craving for, but the next time you’re tucking into their Truffle Yakinuku Donburi (now with foie gras on their new menu), spring for something beyond an iced latte. It’s a little-known fact that the restaurant serves their own blend of cold brews, a regular one with a floral fragrance that also manages to be lightly fruity, as well as Cold Brew Mint, where the coffee is infused with tiger mint tea for a refreshing aftertaste. We last heard that they’re also working one with maple vanilla, which sounds like it’d be a hit for sweet tooths who still need their caffeine fix.

d’Good Cafe

We’re always dropping by this cafe whenever we’re in the Holland Village vicinity, and it looks like we’re not the only ones who do though, since the three-storey space, swing seats and all, is usually full of patrons on the weekends. Other than an interesting custom coffee process that allows you to choose your own blend from a range of beans, they also serve three types of cold brews – the d’Black, a medium-bodied floral-fruity blend of Indonesi Java Jampit and Ethiopian Yirgacheff beans; the d’White, a more nutty blend of Papua New Guinea, Ethiopian Sidamo and Indonesian Mandheling beans; and lastly, something called d’Unknown, whose name is pretty self-explanatory. Don’t worry though, you don’t need to be a fearless explorer to venture forth, just a person who likes to be pleasantly surprised by the seasonal blends the cafe offers.

Dutch Colony Coffee Co.

What happens when you mix fizzy soda with coffee? Why, a drink that certainly pops, all the better on your tongue and as it slides down your throat. You could opt for a more traditional brew, but the highlight here’s the Dutch Colony Carbonated Cold Brew, an easy-to-drink bottle that blends flavourful coffee that has been steeped for 20 hours, with soda pop. Launched late last year, it’s meant to satisfy those who loved their iced coffee a little sweeter, a recipe that still means serious business because it calls for coffee that holds well in carbonated water. Hence, the cafe went for single-origin beans from Panama, named Finca Santa Teresa, known for its floral-like fragrance. What’s even better? They’re looking to stock theirs in supermarkets and cinemas, which means, yes, solid company for that midnight blockbuster.

TRY: Carbonated Cold Brew, $7.90; Regular Cold Brew, $7.90

Say, you’re the kind who likes to be spoilt for choice. Well, you’ll love this little joint at the Singapore Art Museum then, since they serve a whopping seven different single-origin beans for their coffees, and seven types of cold brews as well. Beat that. Beyond the regular method of using room temperature water, they’ve also developed a technique of Ice-Dripped Cold Brew, an impressive name that describes a process of steeping coffee grinds in ice, not water, to extract the coffee’s flavour, resulting in a brew that’s smooth and elegant. Most people opt for the blends that are lower in acidity, such as the Brazil Yellow Bourbon, for notes of caramel and chocolate, or the Indian Monsoon Malabar, a clean blend with a slightly spicy aftertaste.

Grain Traders

At this moment, we’re still gunning for this CBD-based casual joint to open on the weekends, so the only way we can appease our stomachs with their hearty food bowls, stuffed with protein, veggies and grains like quinoa and soba noodles, is to rush down post-work hours for our insatiable fix – which is also how we got wind about their cold brew blends. The white brew comes highly recommended, with a blend of two beans from the Thippanahalli Estate in India, and the Brazilian Ponto Alegre region, with the original blend of chocolatey, nutty notes balanced off with milk, cream and sugar. As for the more acidic black brew, the beans come from the Sidamo region in Ethiopia, Africa, and have a brighter, fruiter taste for those who need their coffee strong.

TRY: Black Cold Brew, $7; White Cold Brew, $7.50
Location: 138 Market Street, #01-01/02/03, Singapore 048946
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm, Mon to Fri

The Daily Roundup

First things first, since this is a cafe that specialises in crepes, we’ll zero in on our all-time favourite: the Burrata Galette, a generous dose of Italian cheese with pesto sauce and a bed of arugulas on a nice, thin crepe that’s both refreshing and delicious. Then, you’ll need a drink to accompany the savoury meal. Try a bottle of cold brew, in either Bold Black or Creamy White. Both use Papa Pahelta’s signature blends, the Suke Quto blend and Throwback blend respectively, so you’re assured of its quality. Go ahead, take a sip – but not before you take lots of Instagram-worthy photos on their nice marble top tables, or with a backdrop of their lovely mint counter.

TRY: Bold Black, $7; Creamy White, $8
Location: 1 Keong Saik Road, #01-02, Singapore 089109
Opening Hours: 8am – 9.30pm, Mon to Fri; 9am – 9.30pm, Sat; 9am – 7.30pm, Sun & PH

Jay Chou's Streetwear Label Now Has A Singapore Store

We’re a mere three months away to Jay Chou, undisputed reigning king of Asian pop, descending upon the National Stadium for his “The Invincible” concert tour, and we sure hope you managed to snag your tickets before they sold out within hours. It’s a good time to start listening to all his albums on loop so you can sing along to all his latest and greatest hits at the concert – we’re keeping our fingers crossed that his setlist will include our favourite evergreen hits like “安靜” and “晴天”, as we’ll be singing along to those the loudest, for sure.
Here’s another idea for how to get ready for the concert: show your support for your idol by turning up all decked out in pieces from his streetwear label PHANTACi, which by the way, has just opened as a standalone store at orchardgateway. Chou started the brand in 2006 and it has since grown to four standalone stores within Taiwan with occasional pop-ups in the region – *SCAPE store Ground Zero last hosted the Singapore pop-up at the start of 2015 – but the orchardgateway store is the first official PHANTACi store outside of Taiwan.
The 1,200-square foot space on the second level of the mall features both menswear and womenswear collections, and as it’s actually a multi-label store, also look out for collaborations with international brands like Nike, Casio and Stüssy to bring in a wider variety of streetwear options.

As for PHANTACi’s own designs, the pieces in store now are from the Spring/Summer ’16 Fantasy by PHANTACi collection. We’re seeing lots of relaxed summer-appropriate silhouettes like tees, tank tops and shorts, emblazoned with slogans or colourful prints. In short, they’re made for the laid-back Singapore style, but designed well enough to not venture into the dreaded sloppy territory.

Graphic tees to pair with basics like denim shorts or jeans, to make for an instantly colourful outfit.

Or go for these slogan cropped tops to be matched with high-waisted bottoms, or if you’re up to it, to show off those abs.

For the men, strong graphic details on a variety of top designs all make a bold statement.

And of course, no streetwear label is complete without slogan caps and shades.

The pieces you’ll really want to quickly grab, however, are the PHANTACi Singapore store exclusives, a black cap and tee emblazoned with the brand logo and name, and on the back of the tee, the slogan “Never Give Up” in gold.

We know the Jay Chou fans probably have already or are planning to make a beeline for the PHANTACi store, but even if your knowledge of him is limited to your friends’ favourite Mandopop song selections at karaoke sessions, we think anyone with an appreciation for streetwear will like PHANTACi’s style.

5 Beauty Products That Should Be In Your Bag Every day

We have to deal with the disappointments of not having everlasting make up everyday. Sure, we look perfect in the morning; but come evening, our washed-out face greets us when we peer cautiously into the mirror. Before we know it, we are sheepishly finding excuses when our friends pull out a camera to take a much dreaded selfie.
Keep these 5 essentials in your bag whenever you are out and these worries will be unfounded. Heck, you’ll be the one pulling out the camera during your next event.

Revlon eyeliner
1. Your trusty eyeliner
More often than not, the perfect eyeliner you have so painstakingly drawn in the morning smudges before you can make it to the end of the day. Carry along your favourite pencil eyeliner in your bag all the time and you can touch up the faded lines. Try Revlon’s ColorStay™ eye liner and bid farewell to eyeliner mishaps!
Revlon ColorStay™ eye liner, $17.90, available at Watsons, Guardian, and leading supermarkets and hypermarkets.

Fresh lipbalm

2. A lip balm
This one’s for everybody out there. Your lips are bound to show some horrid cracks if you are not careful with a constant lip balm application. Even the copious amount of lipstick you smother your lips with won’t hide them.
Our favourite has to be Fresh’s Sugar tinted Lip Treatment lip balms with Sunscreen SPF 15. Guys, your lips are now protected from the never-ending blaze of Singapore’s sun.
Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15, $34, available at Fresh stores and Sephora stores.

Lips

3. A lipstick (or two)
Your lipstick’s bound to disappear after lunch or just from sipping coffee alone. No matter how long lasting your lipstick might be, bringing one or a few in your bag will always be a lifesaver. A pop of colour on your lips will be a total game changer – even if your foundation or concealer wears off, it will prevent you from looking all washed out by the time you head out for a fun night out.
Try Clinique’s signature chubby stick for a comfortable and easy application that will leave your lips with a natural and healthy sheen. Alternatively, if you prefer to have a bold matte lip, try NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Creams that are available in several enticing shades and a smooth applicator that glides on easily.
Clinique Chubby Stick™ Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm, $26, available at Clinique counters and Sephora.
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream, $13, available at Sephora. nyxcosmetics.com.

MUFE pressed powder

4. A handy compact powder
There’s no need to reason with this one. A compact pressed powder is definitely a necessity you have to bring around. It reduces the shine you might have on your face after a long day out, and it also hides your tiny imperfections. A simple touch up will ensure you appear more polished and refreshed for whatever’s lined up.
MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Pressed Powder, $64, available at Sephora ION Orchard, Sephora Ngee Ann City, and the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Loft. makeupforever.com/sg.

Blush

5. A lightweight blusher
Yes, we know. The blush we all have on in the day disappears into nothing; and what’s left is a pale face lacking the perfect flush that we meticulously applied on our cheeks in the morning. It’s always good to carry a compact blusher or a bottle of blush tint, so you can have that pop of colour wherever you go. Find a compact blusher kit that already comes with a brush for convenient, on the go applications. Our favourites are Guerlain’s Rose aux Joues Tender Blush (it also comes with a cute brush in the casing) and the all-time favourite Benetint Cheek and Lip Stain by Benefit.
Guerlain Rose aux Joues Tender Blush, $75, available at Guerlain counters and Sephora ION, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and Suntec City Mall.
Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Cheek and Lip Stain, $54, available at Benefit Cosmetics counters and Sephora.
