A History of Your Favourite Culottes

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why everyone’s just so obsessed with culottes – they’re basically work-appropriate pyjamas that happen to look pretty cute as well. And while there may exist a handful of backward, chauvinist males who scoff at the un-femininity of the casual culotte, it’s good to know that these wide-legged, cropped pants have gotten the universal thumbs-up from practically everyone else (people whose opinions you should actually concern yourself with) – and have come a long way from back in the 1500s.
But what exactly is it about culottes that make them such a seemingly feminist trend? The obvious fact that trousers are originally a man’s item of clothing aside, culottes actually have a pretty eventful past dating back to the French Revolution – when they were first worn exclusively by men of upper class. Then, the pants were more like breeches – fitted and tapering off just below the knee – and were so often sported by the French elite that they became a regular symbol of class oppression. It reached a point where the ordinary, trouser-wearing revolutionary soldiers of the 1700s were nicknamed the ‘Sans Culottes’. Dramatic.
Fast-forward to the Victorian era, and women started entering the scene (at last!) As more women began to take part in sports and physical activities – think horseback riding and bicycling – a new clothing item emerged; the culottes were essentially pants, but concealed by ruffles and panels in a long skirt that allowed ladies to move around comfortably while keeping up appearances of looking, well, ladylike. Of course, the very idea that women have to hide, or dress a certain way, just to stay comfortable is downright blasphemous today; but back then, it was merely necessary.

Only in 1931 did culottes truly burst onto the fashion scene as the unapologetic, “masculine” pants that they are – thanks to designer and fashion visionary Elsa Schiaparelli. The Italian fashion designer (who happened to be Coco Chanel’s greatest rival of all time) caused quite the uproar when she went on a shopping trip in London, wearing a “true undivided skirt, undisguised by panels or a wraparound skirt”. It was an insanely badass move, given that she dealt with some pretty vicious backlash from the British press from that day on; but the feminist statement was taken to the next level when Lili de Alvarez, a professional tennis player, wore one of Schiaparelli’s contentious designs at Wimbledon, later in the year. There was outrage, scorn, and a whole lot of hate – but all taken with a pinch (or a jar) of salt for the greater good; because look where we are today.

Culottes, trousers, and everything conventionally unfeminine have come so far in the fashion world, and in everyday life; and we couldn’t be more thankful. They aren’t just a comfortable bottom to slap on when we’re feeling extra lounge-y – they’re a proud and inspiring reminder of the progress women have achieved for themselves over the decades. We concede; culottes are an awkward silhouette to work with, which might be intimidating for girls everywhere concerned about looking conventionally attractive. But here’s the deal – what you choose to wear should never define who you are as a person, regardless of any flak you might receive. And any guy who tells you they don’t like your pants because they look “manly”, is just another disrespectful, uninformed opinion to ignore. So the next time you’re feeling slightly apprehensive about donning a pair to the office, just remember – slouchy pants don’t make you any less of a woman; caving to male supremacy does.

10 Outfits From "Friends" That Are Still Relevant Today

This decade long sitcom that ran in the 90s and early 00s still remains as one of the most highly raved television shows. This iconic show is not only hilarious, it is also extremely relatable; six friends hanging out in the coffeehouse and going through the ups and downs of life together. Doesn’t that sound familiar? Despite the cheesy name of the show, “Friends” has indeed changed our lives. Set in the 90s, this era also saw the emergence of great (and terrible) fashion. Here are 10 outfits from Friends that are revived in 2016 today. Yes, that’s more than 15 years ago. Let the fashion throwback begin!

1. Lace up

Lace up S10E3
“Friends” Season 10 Episode 3, The One With Ross’s Tan.

Move over, Kim Kardashian. Rachel Green started the trend first. Plunging neckline featuring racy front lace up details. Dominating runways and almost every shop today, lace up details are officially back. However, keep this in mind though: Rachel rocked it almost 20 years ago. No surprises here anyway, since she is the fashion icon of the gang. We don’t know how she manages to look great in almost everything for the entire 10 seasons. Being Jennifer Aniston helps, I guess.

2. Mom Jeans
Mom jeans S1E19
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 19, The One Where the Monkey Gets Away.

Mom jeans SE36
“Friends” Season 3 Episode 6, The One With the Flashback.

Ah, the resurrection of the Mom jeans! Once scorned to be unfashionable and unflattering, only Moms were seen in these infamous jeans. Many didn’t appreciate the illusion of a bigger butt (this was before Nicki Minaj of course) that Mom jeans created. By the 00s, skinny jeans that were so damn hard to breathe in took over this trend. We aren’t sure why either, Monica clearly looks great in those jeans that doesn’t make her look like a Mom at all. High waisted, baggy, and comfortable – this pair of retro jeans goes with anything. Think cropped tops, sweaters, T-shirts and even a simple boyfriend shirt.

3. Denim. And more denim.
Denim Monica S7E17
“Friends” Season 7 Episode 17, The One with the Cheap Wedding Dress.

Denim skirt S6E19
“Friends” Season 6 Episode 19, The One with Joey’s Fridge.

Dungaree S1E2
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 2, The One with the Sonogram at the End.

Dungaree S3E6
“Friends” Season 3 Episode 6, The One with the Flashback.

Dungaree S3E20
“Friends” Season 3 Episode 20, The One with the Dollhouse.

This one clearly needs no introduction. It’s always reassuring to know that the denim craze is undying and will not be going away any time soon, or ever. So to that nagging debate you have in your mind whether to splurge on that denim dungaree, the answer is yes.

4. White sneakers
White sneakers S1E2
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 2, The One with the Sonogram at the End.

White sneakers S3E25
“Friends” Season 3 Episode 25, The One at the Beach.

These are the kind of shoes you never know you need until you get your hands on them. Trust me, you’ll be inseparable from them. The clean, classic white sneakers provide a pop of contrast to your outfits, no matter how dull.

5. Chokers
Choker S1E10
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 10, The One with the Monkey.

Choker S5E15
“Friends” Season 5 Episode 14, The One Where Everybody Finds Out.

Choker S818
“Friends” Season 8 Episode 18, The One in Massapequa.

TOO AMAZING. No, chokers are not for goth chicks only. Sophisticated, sleek and extremely haute, chokers will save your entire outfit. It adds just the right amount of edginess to your ensemble, even the simplest ones.

6. Slip dresses
Slip dress S1E10
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 10, The One with the Monkey.

Slip dress S1E10 3
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 10, The One with the Monkey.

Throwback to the 90s glitz and glamour with slip dresses. Making a huge comeback on runways in Spring/Summer 2016, the slinky slip dress finally returns. Despite the barely there coverage, slip dresses exudes simplicity and elegance at the same time. Layer it with your jackets and a cute pair of sneakers or sandals and you’ll be good to go. We know, Monica’s sleek silver dress is to die for.

7. Plaid patterns
Plaid Monica
“Friends” Season 4 Episode 8, The One with Chandler in a Box.

Plaid S1E19
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 19, The One Where the Monkey Gets Away.

The print that we can all fall back on. Plaids are timeless. The one thing we will never throw out of our closets. Monica in the classic loose plaid shirt is all of us when we have nothing to wear on a warm, humid Sunday. Alternatively, try Rachel’s look with a cropped sweater and adorable plaid mini skirt. We are a little iffy about the knee high socks though. But she pulls if off, obviously. Life is unfair!

8. Overalls
Overalls S1E20
“Friends” Season 1 Episode 20, The One with the Evil Orthodontist.

Ah, the epitome of the 90s – overalls. Perfect with a pair of crisp white sneakers – overalls have made a sudden comeback recently. A comfortable ensemble that will take you from day to night. If you are slightly less adventurous, start off with black overalls that will be really simple for layering.

9. Bold prints
Printed S3E25
“Friends” Season 3 Episode 25, The One at the Beach.

Printed S9E23
“Friends” Season 9 Episode 23, The One in Barbados.

We admit. Phoebe is definitely the odd one. The girls call her “floopy” at one point of the show. But we’d kill to look as great as she does in her whacky outfits. Phoebe’s fashion statement features layering funky prints on one another, which is something really hard to pull off. That doesn’t mean you can just dismiss the possibility of wearing bold prints. Pair these loud florals or geometric designs with neutral hues and you’ll get the perfect summer look. Or begin a hunt for these dresses the girls are wearing and you’ll be perfect for the warm weather. And that’s everyday in Singapore.

10. Crochet and lace
Lace Rachel S8E9
“Friends” Season 8 Episode 9, The One with the Rumor.

Crochet and lace are must-haves in anybody’s closet. We might have chosen this shot for young Brad Pitt though.

WATCH: Radiohead Performs “Creep” Live After 7 Years

Something really special happened at a Parisian multi-purpose indoor arena called Le Zénith two days ago, where Radiohead played their third concert of their 2016 tour. They’re currently touring to promote their latest album, “A Moon Shaped Pool” and they’ve been dusting off a few classic songs from their catalog to perform for the audience. Their setlist hasn’t exactly been consistent and they’ve been shaking things up every other night. But of course, everyone knew that their tour was going to be super unpredictable; it’s Radiohead we’re talking about here.
And it’s no secret that huge bands have that one song that everybody loves, but the band hates. For Radiohead, it was always their first hit single, “Creep”, which is exactly why it was truly surprising when they decided to play the song that night. The last time they performed it live was during their headlining set at UK’s Reading Festival on 30 August 2009. They’ve always been referring the song to as “crap” and have admitted to having a troubled relationship with it, even though it became their breakthrough hit in 1993. Since then, they’ve rarely performed it live.
Watch the performance below:

LISTEN: THELIONCITYBOY's New Track, & Other SG Music We're Currently Into

First things first, in no way is this representative of all the hardworking SG musicians that we know and love — and trust us, there are many. Let’s just say, this happens to just be a round-up of the recent music releases that we’re excited about, the stuff that might get you excited too. Be prepared, it’s quite a journey.
1. “Confetti” — THELIONCITYBOY, feat. SonaOne
First up, one from veteran rapper and musician, THELIONCITYBOY. His latest release, out for two weeks already, is a track titled “Confetti”, one that starts with a hypnotic riff, but later becomes a solid, catchy tune that aptly shows off his also very apt collaboration with Malaysian rapper SonaOne. Plus, this just happens to come with a freestyle over Big Sean’s “Dark Paradise” track, something that he put together in his studio.

Other than that, he’s also working on his upcoming album, which is dropping end of this year, and we heard there’ll be a more than a couple of exciting collabs on it. Charlie Lim. Gentle Bones. Benjamin Kheng of The Sam Willows. Gotta say, we’re excited just listing them out.
On top of that piece of news, we’re treated to a series of behind-the-scenes videos that offers an interesting and genuine, even realistic, view of his music-making journey — the 4-part episode, called “Paradise”, is “filmed as a behind-the-scenes look into my paradise – life in the lion city”, basically a promising premise already. Watch Part 1 here:

2. “Some They Lie” — Narelle
In other news, we’ve also got a track from Narelle Kheng, one she suddenly dropped earlier this month, which we only found out after seeing a highly cryptic photo she posted on Instagram. It’s a first solo single for the singer, also 1/4 of the popular The Sam Willows, and a vibe that feels very different from the more upbeat, radio-friendly tunes of her band. More to come? We hope so.

3. “I’ll Be Waiting” — Disco Hue
Since we’re talking about radio-friendly hits, here’s a music video by synth-pop band Disco Hue, from their debut EP, Arcade. It’s a kitschy video that recalls 80s video games and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, all wrapped up in a song that’s bound to get you moving first, then stuck in your head hours later.

4. “Kaleidoscope” — Cosmic Child
It’s apt that they’ve got one of our familiar playgrounds on the cover of their untitled album, because the “duvet pop” band sounds very nostalgic indeed, with dreamy ethereal vocals layered over lo-fi guitars. Basically, shoegaze music that they describe as “lotsa reverb and fuzz” along with “funny guitar noises”. It’s refreshing that the band does away with fancy words, preferring to let their music speak for itself, and safe to say, their music takes us on a hazy trip, back to happier times, but somehow laced with a tinge of melancholy as well.

5. “Komorebi” — Bennett Bay
If you’re looking for something more soul-tugging, we’ve got this track here. The musician’s inspired by “pastoral imagery and everyday experiences”, and it’s telling here in a quiet, soothing and contemplative piece that you’d wanna drift off to sleep to — only for the best reasons though.

WATCH: The Trailer For Disney's New Live-Action Re-Telling Of "Beauty And The Beast" Is Here

The animated version of Disney’s Beauty And The Beast may have been your childhood, but get ready as the tale is set to be re-told in a live-action film that’s slated for release next year! The film features a star-studded cast with the beautiful and brilliant actress Emma Watson as Belle, Luke Evans as Gaston, and Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame as Beast, to name a few. The film is also set to feature brand new songs from eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice. The newly-released trailer keeps things simple and the detail minimal – we see almost none of the characters, only obtaining a clear view of the story’s enchanted rose – but it definitely succeeds in getting us excited. After all, a story like this needs no introduction.

Fenty PUMA by Rihanna Creeper Now Comes In 3 New Colourways

Rihanna’s performance at yesterday’s Billboard Music Awards was very refreshing. We’re all used to the Barbadian singer’s fancy outfits, badass gangster attitude in her videos and her alluringly high-energetic live performances onstage; but yesterday was different. She opted to appear in a beautiful Thierry Mugler jade pantsuit with nothing but the microphone and herself (on stage), as she delivered a passionate, goosebump-inducing performance of “Love on the Brain”.
But when the Anti singer isn’t busy looking her best while performing and winning awards, she turns to her other passion – fashion. As PUMA Women’s creative director and brand ambassador, Rihanna has been busy releasing her pieces under her Fenty label, which made its runway debut at this year’s New York Fashion Week. This time, she’s back to deliver three brand new colourways for the Fenty PUMA by Rihanna Creeper collection.
Rihanna continues to add her signature touch to the upcoming selection, mixing it up with PUMA’s sporting heritage and the Creeper’s association to the punk era. The new variations include two new premium suede iterations – the Green-Bordeaux Creeper, which has a green upper, maroon formstripe and gum sole, alongside the Black Satin, which features full black suede with satin details on the formstripe. The third and newest style in the range, the Basket Creeper Glo, showcases an all-white, shiny patent leather. Each pair comes with two sets of laces in waxed and classic options with gold trims, and are packaged in a premium velvet Fenty PUMA by Rihanna shoe bag.

Fenty PUMA by Rihanna Creeper (Green-Bordeaux & Black Satin), available from 26 May at PUMA retail stores. The Basket Creeper Glo will only be available online.

5 Documentaries That Prove Filmmaking Isn't All Fun And Games

Within the dog-eat-dog world of the film industry, getting a film from script to screen is a process that can be painful and tedious, with the studio and fellow filmmakers sometimes fighting you every step of the way. Some films make it out and gain iconic status, some never make it past the storyboards. These five documentaries seek to give an in-depth look at some films that may have had more drama going on behind-the-scenes than on-screen, if they even made it to cinemas, that is.
****
The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? (2015)

When you think of Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman, you probably wouldn’t think of Nicholas Cage. But that’s exactly the person who Tim Burton (yes, him) envisioned when he took on Superman Lives in 1998. The documentary is loaded with amazing, grainy behind-the-scenes footage of Cage with long, shaggy hair in various versions of the Superman costume for screen tests. With the script being passed from writer to writer – including long-time Superman fanboy Kevin Smith – Burton’s vision of the Superman verse was set to be the weirdest one yet, and it still kind of is.

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse (1991)

Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now has been widely regarded as one of the hallmarks of American cinema, with a star-studded cast featuring actors such as Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall. The Vietnam War epic draws inspiration from Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novel Heart of Darkness, based off Conrad’s own personal experience journeying up the Congo River into the Congo Free State. But despite its success, Coppola’s production process was a living nightmare, to say the least. In the heat of the jungle, the film proceeded at a stuttering pace due to various issues, each more chaotic than the last. Coppola himself admitted, “We had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little, we went insane.” Yikes.

The Battle Over Citizen Kane (1996)

Citizen Kane‘s protagonist, Charles Foster Kane, grows up rich, loveless and alone. But did you know that the iconic character was based on media magnate William Randolph Hearst? As a result, actor-director Orson Welles found himself adrift in a sea of furious press as the film prepared for its release in 1941. Welles was even promised large sums of cash from various parties if he would turn the footage over to be destroyed, which he never did, thankfully. But The Battle Over Citizen Kane also highlights one clear question: how much of Charles Foster Kane was Hearst and not, in fact, Welles?

Jodorowsky’s Dune (2013)

If Dune sounds familiar, that’s because the 1965 epic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert was eventually made into a film under the direction of David Lynch. However, Lynch’s adaptation has been widely criticised by both critics and audiences alike, being deemed a box office failure upon its release. It also definitely pales in comparison to the vision of Chilean film and theatre director Alejandro Jodorowsky, a filmmaker whose avant-garde works are ambitious, bizarre and everything beyond your imagination. Jodorowsky’s Dune charts the development hell of one of the greatest and most influential sci-fi films never made.

The Act of Killing (2012)

This one’s a little different from the others, but that doesn’t make it any less compelling. Joshua Oppenheimer’s controversial, Oscar-nominated documentary follows Anwar Congo and Adi Zulkadry, two men who lead one of the most powerful death squads of North Sumatra from 1965 to 1966. Almost a million people were slaughtered by these death squads – most of them ethnic Chinese as the movement was anti-Communist. Anwar Congo is said to have admitted to killing about 1000 people.

However, these men were never charged. Instead, Anwar now leads one of the most influential and powerful paramilitary organisations that have arisen from the death squads.

So why is this film on the list? Well, Oppenheimer invites Anwar to re-enact and even direct his acts of killing for the cameras in various cinematic genres of his choice, such as Gangster, Western and even Musical. Anwar is resultantly forced to come to terms with his actions, and The Act of Killing presents some crucial questions as to what may or may not be deemed ethical when it comes to documentary filmmaking.

NikeLab x Olivier Rousteing: Football Nouveau Collection

Within 24 hours of Balmain’s creative director’s announcement of his collaboration with Nike, Olivier Rousteing and the sportswear label unveiled the images of upcoming collection. The French fashion designer puts his signature touches on a selection of Nike’s iconic pieces for both women and men using a predominantly black and gold colour scheme. At the heart of the NikeLab x Olivier Rousteing: Football Nouveau collection is Rousteing’s love for football that dates back to when he was younger. He takes visual cues from the off-pitch look of professional football players competing in Europe’s biggest championship this summer to create a collection that marries the worlds of luxury and sport functionality.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (pictured above with Rousteing) was creative director’s muse and main inspiration for the line, which saw the inclusion of his take on the Mercurial Superfly – a shoe that Ronaldo wears on the pitch everyday. The Football Nouveau collection features sweatpants, shirts, a particularly Balmain-looking jacket called the NikeLab N98 and a slew of football boots – the NikeLab Footscape Magista X OR, NikeLab Free Mercurial Flyknit X OR, NikeLab Roshe Tiempo VI X OR and NikeLab Free Hypervenom 2 X OR.
Browse the collection above, or watch Rousteing talk about the collaborative collection in the video below.

The Best Pants To Splurge On This Season

1. Culottes
You’ve seen this everywhere. Culottes enthusiasts would have a wardrobe full of culottes in every style possible. These are the pants that you just want to get your hands on, despite knowing you have something similar sitting in your closet at home. While seemingly unflattering (yes, we all know the awkward length), they’ll actually become a formidable wardrobe staple. So get over your initial scepticism and embrace their glorious form; because you will unknowingly find yourself reaching out for your culottes when you are having one of those ”I have nothing to wear” days.

culottes asos straightculottes zara 2

Asos, $53.90. Zara,$59.90.

For the more conservative ones, these straight leg culottes feature a straight cut with a slight flare at the ends. These are really easy to style and good for days when you are really lazy to plan your outfits. We’re not exaggerating when we say they go with anything. You’ll also be able to transition easily from day to night, as long as you match them with appropriate shoes. These pants also have an incredible slimming effect especially for those who are slightly more conscious of their legs.

COS,£69. Zara, $109.

As for wide-legged culottes, they feature a more relaxed style and are definitely the most comfortable, yet chic, pants you will ever wear. Depending on how you like your pants, you can go for the shorter ones (mid calf) or those that are slightly longer. Pair them with (white) sneakers, your favourite pair of sandals, strappy heels and you’re good to go.

2. Joggers
These pants are really tricky. You have to tread lightly, or else you might end up looking like you’re heading to the gym. But do not fear, my friends. These will be most comfortable pants you will ever own once you get the hang of it. The trick is to find joggers that are of the perfect length (for those who are not blessed with a great height, try petite sections).
This season’s all about sneakers and leaning towards the street look (Kanye killed it with the Yeezy). Pair your joggers with your favourite pair of sneakers and a cropped or regular t-shirt. To avoid looking like you’re out for a run, throw on a leather jacket or lightweight parka that will complement the look. Alternatively, you could always find joggers with a straight cut and a sleek material, and you’ll have a completely different look. These drawstring joggers can be difficult to style, but just stick to versatile hues – think black, nude and grey, and you’ll be fine. Wear them with sandals, pointed flats or slim sneakers to look effortlessly mod.

3. Prints
Duh. Loud prints, floral patterns and unique designs. Nothing screams Spring/Summer like they do. Despite the funky hues, you won’t necessarily look too flashy in them. Pair these pants with something simple on top, with a complementary colour. Out of ideas? Always go for a classic white top, it will never go wrong.

4. Tailored
The essentials. If you had to choose only one type of pants for the rest of your life, this would be it. Tailored pants usually feature a straight cut design, and are often slim fit. Completely different from the culottes, the tailored pants are slim and fitting at the bottom. Available in various lengths, you can choose to wear them cropped or at your ankles.

You can choose to cuff the pants and wear them with sneakers and a crisp boyfriend shirt. Alternatively, wearing these slim fit pants with a slouchy or baggy top would definitely work as a casual option.

Asos, $53.60. Topshop,$89.90.

Opt for a feminine look with these tie-waist pants that feature a ribbon sash. The tie-waist design not only offers an additional element to your bottoms, but it also provides a slimming effect and hides the unwanted tummy lumps (much needed after lunch time).

Balmain's Creative Director Announces Collaboration With Nike

Who needs a press conference when you have 3.2 million followers on your Instagram account? Balmain’s designer Olivier Rousteing took to the online mobile photo-sharing service last night to announce his upcoming collaboration with Nike Sportswear. Despite being on the receiving end of some very mixed reviews from critics, it’s undeniable that he has a strong presence in the world of fashion and is now one of the most recognised personalities around, thanks to his super active social media account.

A photo posted by OLIVIER R. (@olivier_rousteing) on

Rousteing began his journey working at Roberto Cavalli, where he eventually became the creative director for the label’s women’s ready-to-wear collection. He moved on to Balmain in 2009 and worked closely with the French fashion house’s former creative director, Christophe Decarnin, before replacing him in 2011.
He was 24 years old at the time and was not very recognised. But since then, Rousteing worked to his strengths and brought to the table a fresh take on the brand’s aesthetic. He also welcomed the world to delve deeper into what goes on behind the scenes in the fashion house; a move that other labels were very reluctant make with their own respective houses.
The spotlight quickly turned to the young designer and the French fashion house after celebrity friends like the Kardashians, Rihanna, Beyoncé, models from Victoria Secret and more, started posting selfies in their Balmain outfits on Instagram. This pushed the brand to become the first French label to pass the one-million-follower mark on Instagram.

He made the announcement on Instagram in a very classy fashion – three separate posts that saw a gold OR or Nike logo on a black background and a caption that reads, “ARE YOU READY?” He won’t be the first high fashion designer to be invited by the Swoosh – Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci had his hands busy and ended up designing some sick Air Force 1s back in 2014, and another collection earlier this year. While it’s unclear whether Rousteing will be working on just sneakers or creating an entire collection, we’re pretty confident that he’ll be bringing his signature style and lots of black and gold to Nike.
We’ll just have to wait and see.

Irregular Choice x The Star Wars Collection Phase 2

Following their previous Alice in Wonderland and Star Wars collection that left everybody awestruck, Irregular Choice, a footwear brand created by Dan Sullivan in 1999, is back at it again with yet another exciting collection of shoes in a galaxy far, far away. Introducing Star Wars phase 2, Irregular Choice transports us back to a long time ago, into an extraordinary galaxy of odd alien creatures and strange (but adorable) robotic droids. These glittering beauties feature embroidered C-3PO and R2-D2 designs, as well as a beautifully designed Darth Vader in an array of lustrous colours that are bound to leave you starry-eyed (wink). You can also find the quintessential STARWARS logo at the back of the shoes, making it absolutely clear that the force is with you.

Staged: What's Coming Up In The Local Theatre Scene

Falling
13 May – 5 June 2016
KC Arts Centre – Home of SRT
$40 – $55
1 hr 30 mins
Falling examines the relationship between a family and their 18-year-old, severely autistic son, Josh (Andrew Marko). Tami and Bill (Tan Kheng Hua and Adrian Pang) do their best to raise Josh and cope with the amount of extraordinary attention he requires, while Lisa (Fiona Lim), their rebellious 16-year-old daughter, never ceases to voice out her (however scathing) opinions. Visiting grandmother (Neo Swee Lin) expresses care in her own strongly religious manner. However, the delicate balance of the family’s life soon becomes shattered, and they must cope with a literal matter of life and death.
Each performance also features a post-show dialogue on autism, where caregivers and experts will share their experience, anecdotes and knowledge on the support for autism. More details are available on the website.

Singapore Improv Festival
3 – 5 June 2016
Centre 42
$20 – $25
Seven shows. Six workshops. 30 hours of improv.
Immerse yourself in the world of spontaneous comedy as The Improv Company launches the first ever Singapore Improv Festival. Be blown away by spontaneous theatre that has no set nor a script, so all you’re seeing are characters, stories, music, and on-the-spot dialogue, sometimes with a little help from the audience. If you’re up to the challenge, you can also attend any of their workshops to hone your own skills and see if you can out-improv the performers!

Ghost Writer
9 – 12 June 2016
Studio Theatre, The Necessary Stage (Singapore)
$35 ($28 tickets available for students, NSFs and seniors)
1 hr 30 mins
Witness the collision of the lives of three people: a young dancer who’s traditional training has caused her to feel alienated and dislocated within her country’s artistic practice, a new expatriate wife who struggles to reinvent herself yet remains detached from her immediate reality, and a teacher who’s quest to save a school she inherited leaves her feeling lonelier than ever. Helmed by Cultural Medallion recipients Alvin Tan and Haresh Sharma of The Necessary Stage, Ghost Writer aims to examine the tension and harmony that can result of the ties that bind – and suffocate – us.

The Twenty-Something Theatre Festival
9 – 12 June, 16 – 19 June 2016
Goodman Arts Centre
$20 and above
Inspired by all the twenty-something creatives she has collaborated with in the course of her career, Tan Kheng Hua’s new theatre festival features original plays by (yes) twenty-something playwrights. The catch? All the writers worked without the guidance of a mentor or a theatre company. Expect eight brand-new plays that explore topics from gender to death to culture.

Singapore Theatre Festival 2016
30 June – 24 July 2016
LASALLE College of the Arts
$35 and above
Back for its fifth run, W!LD RICE’s iconic blockbuster festival presents eight exciting, thought-provoking plays that explore “new ways of seeing and thinking” while being confronted by today’s contemporary issues. Tackling various Singaporean themes, the plays are set to be equally hilarious, witty, challenging, and heartbreaking. Aside from a re-run of the hit HOTEL – a tale that brings us through 100 years of Singapore’s history – the festival also promises brand-new plays such as My Mother Buys Condoms and Grandmother Tongue. Particularly striking is a re-working of Alfian Sa’at’s GRC (Geng Rebut Cabinet), which explores the election campaign season within a society where Malays form the majority of the population.

Hello Kitty's Relentless World Domination

We can’t seem to shake her off. Hello Kitty is pretty much taking over the world with her iconic ribbon and the hotly debated lack of mouth (we still can’t figure that out, really). This famous feline, or, oddly enough, British girl, has made her appearance practically everywhere, and sending people into fits of temporary hysteria. Clearly, we see how irrationality triumphs over the mind when it comes to Hello Kitty.
Throwback to the notoriously long queues and unnecessary fights that occurred just for a plush toy (because, you know, Singaporeans are willing to wait a few hours for a toy but not ten minutes for a train). Still, while we continue to scoff at this insanity, we have to admit to something — that this kitty has an undeniable place in our collective hearts, relentlessly claiming her stake with adorably curated products and designs. From toys, stationery, home appliances, food chains, and even clothes, seriously, what hasn’t she done?
For a start, we are once again reminded of how this Kitty continues to control our lives, especially with the arrival of Singapore’s own Hello Kitty Café.

Yes, we’re talking about more long queues for this iconic café, Hello Kitty Orchid Garden, that emulates Singapore’s ‘garden city’ vibe. Adorably-designed Hello Kitty food infused with local flavours? We think the queue is probably warranted. The hours-long wait to get a seat in the adorable café merely shows us how the kitty craze has never, and will never stop.
Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe, Arrival Hall Central #01-22, Terminal 3, Singapore Changi Airport, open 24hrs daily.

Then, there are other ways the never-dying Hello Kitty craze continues, relentlessly. But who’s complaining right?

OPI joined in on the Hello Kitty craze just last year with twelve shades that weren’t all just pink (thankfully). These OPI bottles have adorable Hello Kitty prints on their caps and these prints alone were enough to send the world into a complete frenzy. This frenzy then escalated even further when they surprised everybody with a new collection, Hello Kitty by OPI Cherry Blossom, to usher the Spring season. These four classic colours are actually really versatile, and basically everybody was clamouring to get their hands on them.

WATCH: Adele releases new video for “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” at the Billboard Music Awards 2016

The Billboard Music Awards 2016 took place this morning at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and was hosted by Ludacris and Ciara. Britney Spears wow-ed the world with her flawless opening performance of some of her greatest hits as she accepts the Billboard Millennium Award, while Rihanna delivered a spine-tingling performance of “Love On The Brain”. It’s safe to say that all the performers pretty much brought their A-game to the awards show, including English singer/songwriter, Adele, even though she couldn’t be physically present.
Besides clinching the five awards for the Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist and Top Selling Song categories, this amazing songstress also dropped her new trippy video for the third single from her current album, “25”. The generous singer sings, “Send my love to your new lover/Treat her better/We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts”, on the “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” video, which was shot in London and directed by Patrick Daughters (he’s worked with other musicians like Kings Of Leon, Snow Patrol and Beck). It’s a simple yet intriguing video, which sees Adele dancing and singing in a floral Dolce & Gabanna dress against a black background. The mix of warm and cool lighting in the various layers makes the video all the more fun to watch too.

WATCH: Justin Timberlake Spreads Good Vibes With "Can't Stop The Feeling"

Justin Timberlake is a true force of the entertainment industry. The 9-time Grammy and 4-time Emmy Award musician/actor/all-round performer recently teamed up with Max Martin and Shellback to produce “Can’t Stop The Feeling” for the upcoming Dreamworks Animation film Trolls, where Timberlake is voicing one of the lead characters alongside Anna Kendrick. The original track is the first single from the film’s soundtrack, which will be released September 23rd via RCA Records. The concept of the video is pretty simple: JT and a bunch of delightfully quirky actors bust out their best dance moves to the song in various everyday locations. But less is more, as they say, and director Mark Romanek keeps things delightful and interesting with colourful, brightly-lit shots that mirror the song’s feel-good pop melody perfectly. The major bonus? Seeing Timberlake having a dance battle with an Air Dancer.
