Everyone loves technology. Even if you hate it, you’re probably using a tech gadget to read this article right now. But it’s amazing what technology can do, especially when you have talented directors like Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia. These guys created a surrealist montage of imagery that sees eagles flying underwater, volcanoes spewing popcorn and a giant Chris Martin walking amid the clouds in a micro-sized world. This video evokes a childlike wonder with its imaginative visuals where anything is possible. Everything is fairgame, even sipping bowls of oceans, jumping off a diving board and into a sea of clouds or watching a turtle swim through the air in a subway station. But when your previous video sees the likes of Beyoncé in it, you gotta one-up yourself, which is exactly what Coldplay has done. “Up&Up” is the anthemic new single from their current album, “A Head Full of Dreams”, which is rumoured to be their farewell album. Impeccable editing!

The Watch Maketh The Man
Guys, timepieces play an exceptionally important role when you wanna look your professional best, so don’t go wearing a colourful digital watch because it won’t match your suit and people won’t take you seriously (unless you’re in the creative industry, but that’s a topic for another day). If you’re still scratching your head on what kind of watch to get, consider this. The QB-600D is Casio’s latest addition to the EDIFICE series of high-performance timepieces. Casio has combined minimal, classic styling with cutting-edge technology for the QB-600D.
The 3D Globe Dial is a dome-shaped multidimensional inset dial that features a great Earth motif, made using advanced molding techniques at Yamagata Casio Co., Ltd. It’s also been refined with a polarised deposition so it changes colour when you look at it at different angles. You can also pair the watch to your smartphone, allowing you to adjust and set the time that corresponds with 300 different cities. The inset dial at the 8 o’clock tells the world time you’ve set while the 3D Global Dial tells you if it’s night or day; very nifty if you travel a lot for business.
EDIFICE QB-600D, price TBA. Available at all CASIO G-FACTORY stores from June 2016.

PUMA x Red Bull Racing Disc
It’s been 25 years since PUMA introduced their revolutionary laceless system. The Disc is a system of internal wires that will tighten the upper with just a few twists. It was released in the ’90s as a shoe for track and field, and later rolled out across other categories in the PUMA brand. It wasn’t until four years ago that the brand rehashed this classic silhouette with the release of the PUMA Disc Blaze OG “Cove” x Ronnie Fieg. Now they’re being incorporated into PUMA’s Red Bull Racing lifestyle collection as well. The Red Bull Racing Disc marks the 25th anniversary of the Disc and features a grey perforated leather upper and full bootie construction for the ultimate fit and comfort. It also comes with a smaller and lighter Disc system which consists of five parts. This new mechanic is much faster and smoother to secure and fasten as compared to the original. Other design features include PUMA’s signature Formstripe on the one side of the upper and subtle Red Bull Racing branding on the heel.
PUMA x Red Bull Racing Disc, $209. Available at all PUMA retail outlets.
All Our Travel Must-Haves
Vacation season is upon us! Before you know it, you’ll finally be jetsetting off on that holiday you booked six months ago – and we’re right there with you! While packing may be quite the chore to most people, it doesn’t have to be; especially if you know just what to pack to help you travel smart. We rounded up some of our must-have travel essentials of all time – tried and tested to have made a difference in our own travelling adventures.
Packing cubes
You know those collapsible nylon container bags you sometimes use to organise your undies from your regular clothes? Exactly.
Buy similar from: Lazada, $17.50
A ton of my favourite YouTubers were raving about how these packing cubes made everything so organised, so I decided to try them out for myself. (They’re really cheap anyway, so no major losses regardless.) Long story short: they changed my life. I thought I was already a neat packer to begin with, but having different sized compartments to store your clothes – tops in one, jeans in another; even one just for undergarments – made pulling outfits out on holiday that much easier. Plus, your clothes don’t slide around in your luggage and end up wrinkled.
Bonus tip: These are a godsend on short-haul trips; I just use one large cube to fold all my clothes neatly into – which leaves me with the rest of my carry-on luggage space to fool around with. – Amanda
Passport organiser case
Buy similar from: Muji, $19
Ever spent an embarrassingly long time scrambling around your backpack to find your passport at Immigration? Or had to force a sheepish smile at a storekeeper as you furiously body-searched yourself for spare cash to pay for that ice cream cone? Us too; though never again with this handy accessory.
A passport case; mine’s from Muji, and I’ve had it since 2012. It holds my passport, pen, money, cards – basically everything, in it. When I’m travelling, especially between countries, i prefer to have all my essentials – money, cards, passport – in one place. It’s also a lot easier to carry! – Adam
Multi-plug extension cord
I first noticed my friend packing it along on a graduation trip two years ago, and it proved to be such a necessity because all of us could charge our gadgets at the same time using just one socket and one travel adapter. Now I bring one along to any holiday so I won’t be fighting for free sockets and adapters with my travel companions.
Bonus tip: For anyone going on student exchange/summer school, these will save you a lot of money and hassle than if you just bring along one universal adapter. – Tami
A hat
41 degrees Celsius. Not kidding — that’s what the weather app told us when I was at Thailand recently for a media trip. And that crazy, scorching temperature lasted all the way till sundown, meaning you’re bound to get a tan or work up a sweat, even if all you’ve been doing is stand under the sun for just ten minutes.
Somehow, we get a bit conscious about hats in Singapore, so an overseas holiday is the best time to bust it out. Mine lasted me by the beaches of Samui, proving to be the best accessory to give off those chill island vibes, and protecting my face against the merciless sun while we were hiking at a national park in Chiang Mai. It’s the kind of thing your mom would tell you to pack – so very useful, while also making you look hella stylish for the ‘gram.
Aside: On top of that, if you’re going somewhere humid I’d highly recommend an old-school rattan fan. They passed me one and I hastily chucked it aside, only for it to prove highly useful when the AC in our transport van just wasn’t cutting it. – Amelia
A foldable tote bag
Forever 21, US$1.50
I always have one with me, because you never know when you’ll be buying extra stuff and needing that additional space. Actually, no; you’ll definitely be shopping overseas, so you want to be prepared to have extra room – to stuff more souvenirs or those last minute buys! On my recent press trip to Osaka, I managed to squeeze in some shopping and chucked my buys into my tote. Duffle bags work too but they take up a bit more space in your luggage; a tote bag is guaranteed cabin check-in size, but be sure to get one that’s made of a lightweight, easily foldable material.
The one I use is actually a Rick Owens shoe dust bag that came with the shoes – but it’s the shape of a normal tote bag and the size is tua, so it’s all good. I’ve ended up reusing it as a tote, and anyway, doubling up your buys into reusable totes saves the earth! – Josiah

Summer Calls For This Sparkling Body Cushion
We’ll be the first to admit we can’t get enough of cushions, which is why we add one new one after the other to our collection with no consideration of how we’ve barely made a dent in all the rest we own. Okay, we admit we all need to learn to stop buying makeup we can’t finish using, but this cushion isn’t the same – and therefore we need to have it.
For summer, LANEIGE’s launched the limited edition Sparkling Body Cushion, and as the name implies, yes, the face cushion authority has made a cushion for your body. This one’s not so much about coverage, but rather it’s more for adding a slight highlighting effect on areas you want to catch the light better, with rose gold-hued shimmer. The ingredients of sparkling water and aloe help to moisturise and refresh the skin, and patting this onto your skin leaves a slight cooling effect that will be so welcome in the heat. But we’re more into the extra shimmer this will leave on our skin, because tapping it on will be so much easier than attempting to awkwardly brush on highlighter onto various parts of the body.
The nautical theme on the packaging’s real cute, and it extends to the rest of the Summer collection, which includes a Marine Girl Boy Eyeshadow Palette, and a Marine Nail Kit; the beach-ready shades will get you in a summer holiday mood real quick.
LANEIGE Summer Collection, $23 to $57. Available at LANEIGE boutiques and counters. laneige.com.sg

Oh Uniqlo, we will never get enough.

This Powerful Sunscreen Is Gentle Enough For Sensitive Skin
Admit it, we all have a kind of love-hate relationship with sunscreen — it’s a necessary step to our skincare routine, a must-do before we step out of the house as it lovingly protects us from the UV rays that threaten to do harm on our skin, but it’s just a bit of a hassle isn’t it? Too thick, too slick, too streaky, and then we have to reapply it every two hours? That doesn’t even work out on a normal day, much less a beach vacation or a well-deserved holiday when we’re supposed to be relaxing anyway.
Well then, Shiseido happens to have a sunscreen that makes all this way easier — a new version of their already too-good-to-be-true sunscreen, officially called the Perfect UV Protector S SPF50+ PA++++, that combines the previous promise of actually increasing its protection when in contact with water and sweat, with a gentle formula that works for sensitive skin.
Here’s why we’d totally pack it in our bags during our next holiday, swim, workout, or anywhere really:
1. It actually works better when in contact with water
Say, you’re going for a swim, doing yoga in the morning, or just walking outside in the sun on a hot day. Chances are, you’ll find anything you have on your face — foundation, mascara, creams — slipping off due to sweat or simply because you’re in contact with water, which means you lose some of the protection you think you’re under. Unlike most “water-resistant” sunscreens though, Shiseido’s lightweight formula doesn’t just repel water, it actually increases its protection when in contact with water and perspiration. That’s their powerful WetForce technology for you.
How It Works
- WetForce boosts the veil’s strength up to 124% when in contact with water
- The negative ions bond with minerals in water (positive ions) to become part of a highly water-repellent layer, with more densely-packed protective agents
2. The formula’s gentle enough for those with sensitive skin
You could be identified with having sensitive skin, or you could be looking for a formula that’s gentle on any skin type — either way, this sunscreen lives up to both being powerful, yet safe enough for even children to use.
How It Works
- No parabens, alcohol or fragrances in this tear-free formula
- Ingredients are carefully selected so they don’t irritate the skin — patch tests and practical tests were used throughout the selection process, and research was conducted with experienced dermatologists
- Only about 10% of Shiseido raw materials can be used in skincare products for sensitive skin
Other than these two major highlights, the Shiseido sunscreen makes use of the brand’s existing SuperVeil-UV 360 technology, one that allows the sunscreen agents to spread evenly even over tiny bumps and depressions, so you won’t have to worry about patchy coverage. On top of that, there are extra skincare ingredients as well — Profense CEL that has an antioxidant effect to help prevent UV-caused DNA damage, which is often linked to the formation of wrinkles. Plus, with the lightweight, non-streaky texture, this is about as easy and hassle-free as suncreen gets.

LINE FRIENDS Are Collaborating With Vans
It seems like top mobile messenger application, LINE, is leaving no stones unturned. With a billion users in total and 215 million active users all around the world, it’s not surprising that about 2.4 million stickers are sent in daily conversations, making sticker characters like LINE FRIENDS essential for communication. They’ve already appeared on a variety of products, ranging from plushies, notebooks and even cookies (and with Julie’s Biscuit, no less) – all part of making a huge name for themselves; particularly in Asian countries like Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand and of course, Singapore. The huge success they’ve garnered has caused the parent company to separate LINE FRIENDS as an independent company, in an effort to expand the business.
This time round, LINE FRIENDS announced its first collaboration outside of Asia with well-known American brand, Vans. Both brands share the same principle of creative expression. Brown, Cony and the rest of the gang decided to go wild in their Vans as they each try to find out about their roots in everything that Vans stands for – action sports, art, music and street culture. These characters appear on the canvases of the iconic Authentic, Slip-On and Sk8-Hi silhouettes, each expressed in their own individual way. Brown is seen picking up a guitar while Cony walks around with a spray can in hand. Sally on the other hand, has a surprising ability that will pleasantly shock LINE FRIENDS’ fans – she’s actually a pretty sick surfer and skateboarder, as seen on the Authentic canvas. Last but not least, the entire cast is represented on the Sk8-Hi, featuring the characters individually expressing their own wild side.

Pharrell's Pink Beach Adidas Collab Is This Season's Most Beautiful Burst Of Colour
If there’s one thing we need this summer, you can bet your monochromatically-clad asses it’s colour. And pop singer Pharrell Williams is all set to deliver with Pink Beach – his latest collab with adidas Originals for SS16.
Available in both adults and kids’ sizes, the collection is pretty much one glorious explosion of colour. It’s the Originals athleisure spirit with less of the moody street vibes, and more unadulterated fun – think printed bottoms, chiffon tracktops, and gorgeous graphic bombers. From the intricate island forest tropical prints to the pop art-style doodled graphics, everything draws inspiration from the soulful, luminous vibes of both a carefree island spirit, and Pharrell’s own untroubled passion for music, art, and fashion. (After all, who can forget 2014’s song of the summer Happy?) In fact, there’s something surreally beautiful about each piece that truly does seem to embody the magic of island culture, which only leaves us wanting more.
adidas Originals x PHARRELL WILLIAMS Pink Beach collection, $49 to $149, available online and adidas Originals retailers. adidas.com/PHARRELL.
These Shall Be Your War Paint For Your Next Close-Up
It’s a sign of the times we live in when, even as common folk who don’t spend our lives in front of the camera, we have to have high definition-ready makeup sold to us. We blame it on how even the humble iPhone front-facing camera has gotten frightfully crisp, such that even taking a mere Snapchat demands that our skin look #flawless.
Well haters gonna hate, because it’s MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Ultra HD range to the rescue once again. It all started with the Ultra HD Foundation, which took the world by storm when even the greatest cinema makeup artists began swearing by it. After the Foundation, they’ve followed up with the Ultra HD Concealer (available in 10 shades) and the Ultra HD Stick Foundation (15 shades) – to really cover all bases without a fault, and in the most natural way possible. Both these new debuts contain the same 4K Complex that made the Ultra HD Foundation such a star, with particles that reflect light for a natural finish, luminosity boosters for that movie star glow, and hyaluronic acid spheres to keep the formula comfortable on the skin.
Get ready to get super up close and personal, then. First, the concealer comes with an extra anti-panda eyes ingredient (yes!!) that boosts collagen productions and microcirculation in the eye area, plus a gel to smooth over fine lines and wrinkles. And the stick foundation goes on like a creamy dream, evening out the skin tone completely with a dewy finish. Use a flat foundation brush to apply it all over the face, or apply it directly on the face for touch ups; whichever it is, this one sure caught us by surprise with how evenly it went on and blended, easily eliminating whatever previous misgivings we had about stick foundations. (We take it back, they’re obviously amazing.)
So with the whole Ultra HD crew now here, we’ll be camera-ready, always, at any magnification level. Go ahead and zoom in.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Ultra HD Concealer, $50, available at Sephora and the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Loft; Ultra HD Stick Foundation, $72, available at Sephora ION Orchard, Sephora Ngee Ann City, and the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Loft. makeupforever.com/sg
Everything You Can Find At The New Isetan Scotts Supermarket
It’s true – after what seems like decades, the Isetan Scotts Supermarket is finally fully re-opened! We can’t remember the last time we had a good shop around for quirky Japanese produce and products (last July, apparently), so we’re hightailing down as soon as we can. But of course, a dramatic revamp isn’t complete without a makeover and some snazzy new additions – specifically an open-space, food theatre concept. Here’s what to expect on your next trip.
An authentic Japanese aesthetic
As authentic as a chain-brand supermarket in Orchard can get, of course. As part of a global movement adopted by all Isetan stores across ASEAN, the newly re-opened Isetan supermarket will be all about a “this is japan” brand positioning. That means minimalist furnishings, elements of nature, open space, natural light, and a neutral colour palette – everything integral to Japanese interior design. Another fun feature is the new wavy ceiling design meant to mimic the pebble stone paths of Japanese gardens; plus touches of wood and bamboo that pay homage to the Japanese culture of love and respect for nature. All in all, probably the prettiest place to get your grocery shopping done, period.
Food theatre concept
Can’t say we completely get the concept, but we’re pretty sure it has to do with making a proper multi-sensory experience of your grocery shopping. For one, there’s a Permanent Event Stage that lets suppliers direct from Japan showcase their newest Japanese products. Everything you see “onstage” will only be available for a limited time at Isetan Scotts, so act fast. Regular Japanese fairs at the Stage also mean food samples! Lots of food samples!
Fresh sushi at Hirashima Suisan
Take your pick of Blue Fin Tuna, Yellowtail, King Salmon and more when you have your sushi and sashimi freshly prepared right there in the supermarket. Best part – wide window panels even give you full view of the preparation, so you’ll be drooling before you’re even handed your purchase.
Yaoya Fruit Juice Bar
Freshly squeezed juices and fruits? Yes please. The Japanese sure take their freshness seriously; a wide variety of seasonal produce will be available right at your fingertips, from sweet potatoes to Japanese melons, to strawberries and peaches. ‘Ripe for the picking’ was never more relevant.
Gourmet carbs at Johan Paris Bakery
No one does bread better than the French, so obviously this Japanese bakery with French origins is doing something right. A must-try is the exclusive Yuzu bread ($3) that’s handmade from scratch (like everything else); but try not to pass out from the heavenly smells wafting from the freshly baked loaves still rising in the kitchen.
Supermarket dine-ins
One of the thrills of luxury grocery shopping is grabbing a bite to refuel after – right there in the supermarket. The new Isetan supermarket offers not one, but three new dine-in spots, so you won’t even have to leave the building for a tasty meal.
WA-Dining
Available: Bentos – from Kaogoshima Wagyu to Hokkaido seafood, for a snappy but satisfying delicatessen lunch. Live food demonstrations (roasting, frying) make the meal more exciting.
Dashi Bar
Available: Udon and soba, for those in need of a noodle fix
Kaku-Uchi Sake Bar
Available: Sake, duh; perfect for enjoying with your supermarket sushi or an after-work pick-me-up.
Dessert at Chäteraisé Patisserie
Because dessert needs to come after everything, even grocery shopping. As expected, everything’s made with the best ingredients – pure Hakusyu water and fresh milk all the way from Japan – for that extra kick of authenticity. And you’d be a fool to pass up the Double Fantasy Cream Puffs, made with Hokkaido fresh cream. Yum.
Isetan Scotts Supermarket, 350 Orchard Road, Shaw House, open 11am – 9.30pm.

Goddammit, We Want The Old Instagram Back
Sometimes, all the world’s pent-up frustration at the injustices of our society can only be condensed into one single utterance: Y u do dis. Indeed; y, Instagram, y. We’ve poured our hearts and souls into you, catapulted you from a basic photo-sharing platform into possibly the most influential form of social media right now; spent money that probably didn’t reach you (sorry) on filters, apps, and camera tools just to get the perfect ‘gram, and even mindlessly caved to the legions of Instagram “influencers” you unapologetically birthed. And for what, we ask? For you to turn on us in the darkest of times, to shed the skin we knew and loved so well, and release an all-new icon – an icon that’s pretty damn ugly, tbh.
Melodrama aside, if you haven’t already seen Instagram’s newest update, be prepared for a rude shock the next time you update the app and see it pop up on your home screen. The familiar, well-worn Lomo cam icon said its last goodbyes this morning when it was replaced with a brightly coloured, Microsoft Word-approved gradient, encased within what looks like a digitised rendition of the traditional pinhole camera – a tribute to how far photography has come, we’re guessing. Which leaves us demanding – why, Instagram? The “official” blog post announcing the update reasoned that the new look “reflects how vibrant and diverse your storytelling has become”, and audaciously stated that it was inspired by the community (ie. us). But that still doesn’t explain why Instagram felt the need to roll out all these changes at a time we can all safely say is their peak. After all, who can forget the algorithm update just a few weeks back that threw the entire online community into an outrage – how dare you mess with what superfluous photos we see on our feed and interfere with our desire to be superficial, everyone snarled. Why fix what’s not broken?
The desktop interface has already had its vicious makeover, we’re sorry to report, with zero traces of the brown Lomo icon and friendly blue borders signature of an Instagram feed. Right now, we’re still defiantly resisting updating the mobile app, just so we can hold on to the icon and its clueless, unpretentious past a little longer. That said, something tells us we haven’t seen the last of Instagram’s unwelcome updates, so brace yourselves, people. Dark days are ahead.
Pastel Babylights: The New Hair Trend To Try
It all started early this year when Pantone, ultimate authority of colour, changed the Colour of the Year game forever by crowning two colours the shades of 2016. Henceforth Rose Quartz and Serenity, a pastel pink and a dreamy blue respectively, became colour trends that the fashion and beauty worlds scrambled to get on top of, and a worldwide obsession with pastels began.
Pastels are really not hard to love, though. They are immediately feminine, and can be easily matched with other colour families. And that’s why we’re totally on board with wearing them in our hair as well. We don’t mean a full head of pastel – as awesome as that is, we realise that takes a bit more daring – but rather, wearing the pastel as babylights in a head of cool-toned brown hair.
L’Oréal Professionnel keeps us updated with the pastel game with their Pastel Babylights Colour Service by Majirel, a summer collection of hair colours that feature soft translucent browns with four cool pastel reflects: Rose, Lavender, Mint and Mineral. The idea here is to achieve a subtle brightening effect, by applying the pastel highlights on tiny sections of hair to get a natural highlight, like the kind seen on children’s hair under the sun. A base of brown hair paired with the candy undertones from the pastel shades are flattering for warm-toned Asian skin, since the brown carries cool tones that help neutralise any sallowness.
And here, these L’Oréal Professionnel ambassador salons show us their own interpretation of the Pastel Babylights look on their models, who wear the pastel trend in 12 different ways. It’s plenty of inspiration, should you be considering getting in on the pastel trend yourself.

He applied the colour directly on the hair without lightening it first, so a soft and subtle effect is created; then, he added highlights in the bottom layers of her hair in the shade Majirel Vanilla Blond (10.2), to create some extra dimension.

The technique Jason used here is called babylights strobing, which involves creating a seamless wave of pastel babylights, then adding strobing highlights to draw the focus to selected parts of Tyen’s face. The colour theme is mint, using the Majirel Pastel Mint (7.71) on Tyen’s loose cascading waves to create a modern version of a classic Hollywood old-glamour style.

Modelled by: Kyla Tan, Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 1 finalist (Instagram: @_kylatan)
This quirky style that William gave Kyla brings to mind the colourful streets of Harajuku, by him adding babylights in Majirel Pastel Lavender (7.21) to a short bob that’s softened with curls at the ends; the pastel babylights help add much volume and depth to the crown of Kyla’s head. Finish with a curved fringe, and this look is equal parts doll-like and edgy.

Irene created a colour-blocking style on Chloe by layering the Majirel Pastel Mineral (6.17) and Pastel Rose (7.42) on gently layered hair, to make a safe brown colour a lot more exciting. The long, side-swept bangs add shape and movement to the style, while adding waves at the ends is a super-quick way to give the ‘do a volume boost.
