We Found The Ultimate Sneaker Store

Never underestimate the collective power of diehard sneakerheads. In a sneaker-centric move that’s about as 21st Century as it can get, a brand new multi-label sneaker and lifestyle concept store is opening in Singapore – the “concept” being anything and everything social media.

The Social Foot_frontage 2 New Era and Stance Socks

Aptly named, The Social Foot is all about creating a unique in-store experience catered to the modern, socially-engaged consumer. For one, the store is built with creating a space for the sneaker community to come together in mind. The interior fixtures are modular in design, which means the store can be easily moved around and transformed into an intimate event space or pop-up installation at any time. An impressive 3D mural of sneakers on the wall features a variety of classic sneaker brands – Adidas, Reebok Classic, Puma, New Balance, Onitsuka Tiger and more – all of which sit on unbranded shelves, so you’ll get a more fulfilling experience browsing and discovering sneakers from different brands on your own.

The Social Foot Backwall_merchandise The Social Foot Gifster Corner 2

There’s also a nifty social corner tucked at the back of the store, where shoppers can pose against a photo wall and create their own GIFs to share on their social media accounts. Dying for a few minutes of fame? The store will even project your GIF onto the screen at the storefront window.

PRO-Keds_Classic_Lo_White  Pro-Keds Royal Hi-Cut

And if you weren’t already enticed by the selection of brands available, another great name is making its Singapore debut exclusively at The Social Foot – PRO-Keds may be intended originally as a basketball shoes, but has been worn by athletes, musicians, and style icons worldwide. You’ll find the shoe familiar – it has a Converse-style silhouette but with the more rounded, friendlier finish of a Keds shoe. The PRO-Keds Royal series ($89 to $99) will be available in both Hi and Lo cut versions; we’ve got our money down it’s gonna be the next ‘it’ shoe. If you’ve got a sizeable sneaker collection yourself, you’re due for a trip down to The Social Foot.

The Social Foot, Orchard Central #01-19/20, opening hours: 11am – 9.30pm.

5 Alternative Fragrances For The Cool Kids

Sometimes, we just want to smell different. Nothing against all the mass-market scents out there in the familiar floral-fruity-woody variants, but if you’re feeling adventurous, there are more alternative options out there to spritz on and leave the people around you wondering, who is that person who smells so interesting? Only in a good way, of course. Here are 5 options that could be your new signature scent:

Diptyque Eau des Sens
Right from the get-go, you know this scent is out of the ordinary, because Diptyque describes it as “a confusion of the senses”.  The idea here is to celebrate the “softness of skin”, but in an rather unexpected way with orange blossom, bitter orange, juniper berries and patchouli to make up  a woody and spicy scent – not what you’d usually associate with “softness”. It’s also not clear whether it’s made for men or women, left to all that catch a whiff of the scent to decide for themselves. If you like to be deliberately mysterious and create an air of intrigue around you, spritz this on.
Diptyque Eau des Sens Eau de Toilette, $144 for 50ml and $190 for 100ml. Available at escentials stores.

CHANEL Les Exclusifs de Chanel Boy Chanel
It’s a fragrance borne out of a rather tragic love story – Gabrielle Chanel’s 12-year relationship with Arthur “Boy” Capel, the gentlemanly English polo player who helped finance Chanel’s first-ever store. It was an affair that ended prematurely when Capel died in a car crash in 1919, and this addition to the Les Exclusifs de Chanel scent range commemorates their relationship, a story that has been much retold. Chanel’s perfumer Olivier Polge imagines “the mark of a man on the skin of a woman” with a heart of rose geranium, an “androgynous flower” that is equal parts minty and rosy,  between layers of citrus zest, lavender and sandalwood. It’s a fragrance that’s meant to be androgynous, like how Chanel was always unafraid to don menswear pieces without sacrificing any of her femininity. This scent is one for the romantics.
CHANEL Les Exclusifs de Chanel Boy Chanel Eau de Parfum, $310 for 75ml and $560 for 200ml. Available from 10 June at CHANEL Fragrance and Beauty Boutiques at ION Orchard, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and VivoCity.

Comme des Garçons Dot
The dot has long been associated with the Comme des Garçons brand, and the story of this scent started off from this iconic symbol. Rei Kawakubo herself requested that the osmanthus flower, characteristic of Japan in the autumn, be the the main theme of the scent, and the result is a floral and fruity mix that is made up of bitter orange, pepper, and white amber woods to create the mysterious allure of a park filled with osmanthus trees in full bloom. It’s definitely a feminine fragrance, but unusual enough without being overpowering, in typical CDG style.
Comme des Garçons Dot Eau de Parfum, $206 for 100ml. Available at escentials stores.

Kenzo Totem
There seems to be a recent trend of creating fragrances for millennials, and this trio of unisex scents is Kenzo’s version of what millennials are supposed to smell like: fresh, woody, and brimming with energy. The trio is made up of the Totem Woody Citrus, with pink grapefruit and tea leaves and a base of woody leather; the Totem Woody Floral, made up of bitter orange, lemon blossom essence and vetiver; and the Totem Woody Fruity, which has pineapple, cardamom and cedarwood.
Kenzo Totem Woody Citrus, Totem Woody Floral, and Totem Woody Fruity Eau de Toilette, $95 for 50ml. Available at Sephora stores from 12 May.

CLEAN RESERVE Warm Cotton Reserve Blend
If you like your scents clean, New York-based fragrance brand Clean Reserve has a range of offerings that’s all about keeping things fresh and simple. Another important fact about the brand: all its ingredients are sourced responsibly from sustainable sources. Warm Cotton is one of its more iconic scents, and is a combination of light florals and musk with notes of mint green, pepper floral and musk, to evoke freshly-washed cotton on skin. Clean Reserve’s fragrances are also linear, which means they don’t move from top to bottom notes like most other perfumes; this means they’re suitable for blending – we suggest the other offerings like Reserve Rain.
CLEAN RESERVE Warm Cotton Reserve Blend Eau de Parfum, $128 for 100ml. Available at Sephora stores.

Happy Star Wars Day! Be The First To Snag These May 4th Goodies

Let us be the first to wish you: Happy May the 4th!
That’s right, today is the one day every year when Star Wars fans unite to celebrate the force being with us all. If you missed out on the epic Star Wars Day event at OCBC Square over the weekend – we’re sorry to say that means you also missed lightsabre stunt choreography, life-sized costume displays, a bazaar and meet-and-greet, plus a panel session with artists from Lucasfilm Singapore who worked on set for Star Wars: The Force Awakens – well, no worries. To join in the festivities, a bunch of companies are stepping up their May Fourth game to help you celebrate your inner geek.

6301 A New Hope 66109 The Force Awakens cake  6508 Rule The Galaxy

From Swensen’s, nothing less than Star Wars ice cream cakes! Swensens’ classic ice cream cake gets a makeover appropriate for a galaxy far, far away, with movie-themed cake décor featuring Star Wars Classics (episode 1–6), Star Wars – The Force Awakens (episode 7), and Star Wars Rebels (which we all know is mildly inferior *cough*). Available in 23 ice cream flavours, the cakes are customisable in four different shapes – heart, square, round, and rectangle – perfect for your Star Wars-obsessed nephew’s birthday party. Or, you know, your personal May Fourth party with your dark side adult crew.

And Uniqlo’s definitely in on the game too, with their newly launched Star Wars UT collection. We have to admit, as Star Wars fans ourselves, we’re pretty impressed with the quality of the graphics on the T-shirts – they’re fresh, stylish, and not tacky in the slightest. And at only $19.90 each, they’re a steal. The collection is only available in men’s and boy’s sizes, but honestly, we’re all for unisex clothing and defying gender labels (literal ones, especially) – so go ahead, ladies, and don’t be afraid to rep your Star Wars pride too.
And of course, don’t be afraid to fully maximise the day by binge-watching the movies – all seven of them. It’s a great day to be alive, everyone. May the force be with you always.

Chanel Has A New Drawstring Bag In Ultra-Soft Leather

And here’s what you need to know about it. The latest, newest bag from the luxury French house is a trendy and trendsetting bucket bag that’s all minimalist-chic with a touch of familiarity. We’re talking about the supple form of the bag, with familiar details of overstitching and chain detailing, complete with the Chanel CC logo.

Dark khaki soft leather drawstring bag

Of course, what separates this, elegantly called the Drawstring, from the rest is the ultra-soft leather that the bag’s crafted with, said to be cut from the most precious part of calf leather skin. If you can, take a closer look at its quality; the Chanel ateliers have used their expert technical skills to treat the skin well, in order to preserve its air of nobility and velvety-smooth texture.
Brown soft suede drawstring bag

As soft as peach skin, that is, which, over time, will acquire a nice patina that’s unique to you. The drawstring is available in black, beige, mocha, burgundy, blue and khaki, and in two different sizes.
Black soft leather 2.55 bag Burgundy soft leather 2.55 bag Navy blue soft leather 2.55 bag

Just as well, the soft leather bags that emerge from the Métiers d’art Paris in Rome 2015/16 collection doesn’t just include one silhouette — there’s also the iconic 2.55 bag, now reinvented in the same soft skin. It comes in a range of timeless colours: in black, beige, brown, navy or burgundy, and also comes adorned with a grosgrain ribbon or in a jacquard motif knit, while certain models are embellished with medallions. Suffice to say, there’s a variety of these next-gen 2.55 bags for you to choose from.
Resist this.

We’d like to see you try.
Chanel’s line of soft leather bags will be available in boutiques from June 2016.

Our Fav Underrated Looks From The Met Gala

Alright, we’ve all conceded that Claire Danes singlehandedly won the night in her light-up Cinderella-esque Zac Posen gown, but there were also a ton of great looks not to be discounted at this year’s Met Gala. For those out of the loop, the annual celebrity benefit held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute boasted a particularly intergalactic theme this year – “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”. Very appropriate, given the fact that people from around the world were live streaming and watching the event on Instagram and Snapchat.
But as much as we loved Zayn’s Winter Soldier-meets-Tin Man from Wizard of Oz getup, ahh-ed in hushed respectful tones at Anna Wintour’s classic Chanel, and raised a questioning brow at Beyonce’s, err, acne suit, some other great outfits caught our eye – and deserve a bit more mention, we feel. So here are some of our less raved about favourites, which probably still cost as much as a HDB flat here. Ah, to be rich and famous.

For committing to the theme, right down (or up!) to her hair:

"Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" Costume Institute Gala
Ciara in H&M

For standing out in a sea of metallic dresses:
"Manus x Machina" Costume Institute Benefit Gala in NYC
Dakota Johnson in Gucci

She obviously got a little bored of grey.

For proving that you don’t need blue contacts to make a fashion statement (sorry Kanye):
"Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" Costume Institute Gala - Arrivals
will.i.am in Gucci

For obviously giving no f***s about the theme:
"Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" Costume Institute Gala - Arrivals
Stacy Martin in MIU MIU

Just for being able to pull off a wool blazer and leather pants:

Lucky Blue Smith in H&M

Plus points for stunning arm candy.

And for everyone who doesn’t know why the Queen raised so many eyebrows,
"Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" Costume Institute Gala - Arrivals "Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" Costume Institute Gala - Arrivals
Beyonce in Givenchy

Just FYI, each one of those pearls costs approximately US$6000.

We’ll say it again: Ah, to be rich and famous.

This Lomography Camera Will Develop Your Artistic Shots Instantly

Digital photography too mainstream for you? That’s why there’s Lomography. Lomo fans have always been able to get their fix of film photography through various stores in town, but when Lomo decided to open its first flagship store here (also the first in Southeast Asia) in 2011, it became almost life-changing; well, at least for the Lomo enthusiasts of course. They quickly established the Singaporean micro-site for the community here and launched their online store to bring about even more convenience for their die-hard fans. But one of the greatest things that Lomography brought to the table was its Lomo’Instant camera.
We first saw the prototype back in 2014, when they were looking to crowd-fund the project. Now, the Lomo’Instant camera is available in a whole myriad of colours and patterns. If you’ve always loved taking analogue photos with their cams, but have little patience to wait for the photos to develop, then let this be your source of instant gratification. Lomography pays tribute to one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Honolulu. This special edition of the Lomo’Instant is inspired by beach culture and laid-back Hawaiian charm, sporting a clear colour palette and palm tree print detail. The Lomo’Instant Honolulu also comes with various accessories like the Fisheye Lens Attachment, Portrait Lens Attachment and a Close-Up Lens for you to get more creative. Just load it up with the widely available Fujifilm Instax mini and you’re all set to create wonderful images on credit card-sized polaroids.

Lomo’Instant Honolulu Edition, $228. Available online

Shoot For The Stars

Here’s a brief history lesson on the Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation, Sony. They were once known as “Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo” before they decided to change the company’s name to “Sony”. It’s a mix of two words – “sonus”, which is latin for “sonic” (meaning sound); and “sonny”, a word that denotes small size, or a youthful boy. Back then, it was unusual for any Japanese company to use roman letters to spell out their name instead of writing it in kanji. Also, their principal bank at the time wanted the founders to change the company’s name to “Sony Electronic Industries” or “Sony Teletech”. But they didn’t want the name to be tied to any particular industry, which turned out to serve them well today. They’ve become one of the most comprehensive entertainment companies in the world, with a firm grasp of the film industry, music industry and of course, the electronics industry (we will always remember the Walkman®). They also have a strong lineup of cameras, ranging from point-and-shoots to video cameras. Here are two to get you started. By Adam Kerr.
****
SONY A5100, $999
sonya5100
If you’ve always wanted to be a serious hobbyist but never liked the idea of carrying around a bulky and somewhat heavy DSLR camera, then you should get started with this. It’s one of the smallest interchangeable-lens digital cameras around, so once you’re ready to take it to the next level, you can start purchasing other lenses to play with. It has a large and super sensitive 24.3-megapixel APS-C size Exmor™ CMOS sensor (as big as the ones in DSLRs) that works well with the powerful BIONZ X™ processor to give you flawless detail and breathtaking image quality. The a5100 is also great for taking sel es – just ip up the 3-inch LCD touchscreen and you’re good to go. The camera’s Soft Skin Effect will even enhance your skin tone for better-looking sel es. It also supports the XAVC S format (50mbps) so you can capture video footage in full HD. The a5100 features Fast Hybrid Autofocus (AF) with 179 focal plane phase detection AF points to help you track your subject while recording videos (especially useful if you’re recording videos of your pet). Once you’re done, share your precious memories via NFC or Wi-Fi directly on your Android or iOS device.

SONY CYBER-SHOT™ RX100 IV, $1,399
sonyrx100iv
It’s easy to keep things simple with the Sony Cyber- shot™ RX100 IV, especially with the amount of technology that has been thrown into it. Sure, it looks like your typical point-and-shoot camera, but you’ll know exactly what we mean once you try it. The RX100 IV is the world’s rst camera that comes with the 1.0-inch type stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor, which consists of three different layers – the pixel area, advanced signal processing and an attached DRAM memory chip. These allow for some pretty nifty capabilities, such as a super fast Anti-Distortion Shutter of up to 1/32000 per second, a Fast Intelligent AF system that can detect a moving target in under 0.09 seconds, and more. You can also record super slow motion videos at different frame rates (max: 1000fps) and in different playback formats (24p-60p). But of course, don’t expect the stuff you see on the Slow Mo Guys’ YouTube channel (their $150,000 industrial-grade high-speed camera can record videos at more than 170,000 fps), but this camera is still really good nonetheless, considering that a feature like this is usually found in higher-end cameras. It’s also one of the first Cyber-shot™ cameras that lets you record videos in 4K (QFHD 3840×2160).

Both cameras are available at all Sony Stores, Sony Centres, and selected Sony authorised dealers. sony.com.sg

The New Matte Liquid Lipsticks To Try

Because so many of us have an insatiable need for matte liquid lipsticks, we know you guys will appreciate new matte colours, anytime. Even if you already have five liquid lipsticks in that “perfect” shade of nude in your stash, there is always, always room for one more. So here are more matte selections that have been launched over the past few months for you to try (if you haven’t already), and stay tuned for more matte liquid lipstick roundups in the coming months – there’ll always be new ones to want.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte LipColor

revlon ultra hd matte

Revlon has always been good at doing lustworthy matte lip colours (i.e. those ColorBurst Matte Balm lip crayons), so we’re not surprised that their first matte liquid lipsticks became an instant hit upon launching recently. Among the 8 shades are some very pretty pinks and nudes, and going by the recent nude lip craze that has been going around, we predict the shade HD Seduction to be the biggest hit. We also like that this smells like mango and vanilla, and goes on super smooth with zero goopiness.
$21.90, available at Watsons and Guardian stores.

Clio Virgin Kiss Silkuid Lip Matte
clio virgin kiss silkuid lip

For statement neon lips that’ll pop, of course we turn to the Korean brands. Clio has always done lots of super-bright lip colours, but recently they’ve really focused on the matte finish, and launched this matte liquid lipstick that comes in an offering of intense shades like electric pink and fluorescent orange. We know a neon matte lip isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but once you dare to try it, there’s no turning back.
$22.90, available at selected Watsons.

Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick
hourglass opaque rouge

This luxe formula ensures your matte lip is kept free of flaking, feathering and dry patches. What we like about this line are the rich, deep shades, like Empress, a dark aubergine, and Icon, a standout cool-toned red. We’d keep this liquid lipstick for special nights out, for the times when we want to feel extra glamorous.
$44, available at Sephora.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick
nyx liquid suede

The most obvious difference between this new offering from NYX and their famed Soft Matte Lip Creams is the out-there shades that are included in the Liquid Suede range, such as Stone Fox, a dark grey, and Amethyst, an acid purple.  Evidently, this is for when you want to make a bold statement with your lips. Not that there aren’t more “normal” shades, but we highly recommend taking a step out of your comfort zone – maybe start with Sandstorm, a light brown.
$19, available at Sephora.

M.A.C Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour
mac retro matte

We all know M.A.C for having the widest range of lip colours out there, so we expect this new liquid matte range to rapidly increase over the coming months (the brand is known to have literally hundreds of new launches each year, after all). All 9 shades are intensely saturated so there are no wallflower shades here; even the nudes will stand out due to how pigmented the formula is.
$39, available at M.A.C stores and counters.

K-ŸSwiss Nails All-White Tennis Chic With Their New 50-Love Campaign

Don’t you just love it when a brand comes up with a witty and relevant campaign? Call us superficial, but we were tickled pink to hear that American tennis brand KŸ-Swiss is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year with the launch of a very aptly named 50 Love campaign. The only thing better than this pun-perfect campaign? – The gorgeous, exclusive all-white tennis shoes in the collection itself.

Our First Reactions To Watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians

We caved.
After 11 seasons of swearing never to lay sight on reality TV’s most extensively publicised show, we used our Labour Day holiday to sit down, take a deep breath and watch Keeping Up With The Kardashians. And surprisingly… it wasn’t all that bad.
Sure, the loss of brain cells isn’t something one can measure tangibly or externally, but we promise the damage done was insignificant. In any case, here are all our first reactions to watching the decade’s most famous family’s antics.

1. Horror
… upon first seeing that each episode is a good 40 minutes without commercials, and having it sink in that you’ve actually committed to giving away an hour of your life you’ll never get back. Oh god it’d better be worth it.

2. Being completely overwhelmed

10500440_10153331492546892_2061666121864413502_n

They’re all there! In the same living room! All four Kardashians + two Jenners reclining on the couches of that enormous living room! I’m looking at the inside of the Kardashian home.

3. An indescribable mix of disgust and wonder when the 2 second-long opening theme rolls

via GIPHY

“Look at all that money in one row.”

4. The instant silent agreement with the rest of the world that everything out of Kim’s mouth is a little vapid
12112472_10153182837191892_5727892407105168063_n

5. Legitimate surprise that Kris Jenner has speaking roles

via GIPHY

Let’s not pretend we don’t all occasionally forget she exists.

6. Envy and awestruck wonder at Kendall’s raw perfection

via GIPHY

HOW?!

7. Confusion at internally comparing Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney’s resemblances to each other
12790961_10153345567911892_1249080678296571337_n

And of course spending half the episode trying to remember which ones are Kourtney and Khloe. (Tip: Kourtney is blonde. *Edit: Oh my god, wait no, that’s Khloe. SEE.)

8. Gradual genuine appreciation for Khloe
12745786_10153331492516892_1099195672045814623_n

She’s witty, honest, and seems the most down-to-earth of her sisters. Plus her brutal taking down of Kourtney’s flaky beau Scott was totally badass.

9. Being continually stunned at some of the things Kim and Kourtney say

via GIPHY

Oh well. We should have seen it coming.

10. Marveling at Kylie’s lips

via GIPHY

Those lip injection rumours are definitely true, bruh.

11. Shock at the fact that Kylie is actually pretty likeable
580376_10153246319801892_2674513930607205430_n

She might not look her age, but she sure behaves like a sweet, lovestruck little 18-year old (19 this year).

12. …Until she calls Kendall f****** annoying
Oh hell no.

via GIPHY

13. Amusement that there’s a lot of dramatic pouting going on
Played up by choice music and reality TV-signature camera zoom-ins.

14. Getting drawn into their family antics and bond
13076581_10153487721296892_3715019790901313019_n

15. Slowly settling into the realisation that this is just another regular TV show, and that isn’t all that bad

Sure they’re a little self-absorbed, but they’re, genuinely, kind of just like any other family.

16. Surprise at yourself… for clicking on the next episode

What is happening to me.

Here's What's Happening This Weekend

Singapore HeritageFest 2016

Image courtesy of Singapore HeritageFest (2)

The Singapore HeritageFest is back! And more nostalgic than ever, or so we’ve heard. This year, it’s all about sharing in the hidden, little-known stories about our shared spaces and ways of life. Look forward to trails, open houses, and performances that celebrate the stories of Singapore’s diverse communities, because a vibrant cultural heritage is always something worth celebrating. More specifically, the Singaporean foodie in you can enjoy a gastronomic stroll down memory lane and relives the 1960s street food culture at the National Museum, where food stalls used to line the grounds hawking local favourites like rojak and wanton mee. (Come dressed in 1960s vintage wear and you’ll even get a free drink with purchase of two drinks at the Joo Gwee drink stall!)
There’re also exciting workshops like Ondeh Ondeh-making, but if food isn’t your thing (are you even truly Singaporean then), you can still be a part of the festivities with the lineup of film screenings, musical and theatre performances, and guided cultural tours. It’s three weekends of hearty, patriotic fun and frankly, we couldn’t be more excited.

Finally: Kat Von D Beauty Hits Sephora Singapore

We’ve waited way too long for this: from July this year, we’ll all be able to stock up on the cult Kat Von D Beauty Tattoo Liners and Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks at local Sephora stores.
It’s hard not to freak out, because for such a long time now, beauty junkies here have been clamouring for the brand, one of the most popular in US Sephora stores, to be stocked in Sephora Singapore. All the while it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen, until a few months ago, when we heard whispers that things might finally be changing… and before we knew it, we received invites to the official media launch of Kat Von D Beauty here in Southeast Asia, where we got a chance to finally try out the products we’ve heard so much about, and meet Kat Von D herself!

“I’m really excited and curious as to how people in Singapore will respond to the makeup line, because I truly believe I subconsciously created it for you guys and the weather here,” she tells us. She couldn’t be more right, especially considering the weather we’ve been melting in recently: with product names like the Lock-It Foundation and Tattoo Liner, these formulas are made to not budge from your face.
Another thing you’ll love about Kat Von D Beauty is the sheer range of shade options for both the complexion products and the lip colours. Von D hasn’t been afraid to include shades like ultra-pigmented black and green amidst traditional reds and the currently-popular nudes. But that doesn’t mean you a have to be super daring with makeup to wear her brand.
“Well, I think a lot of people have the misconception that our makeup line is designed for people who look and dress like me, and that’s not the case,” says Von D. “The beauty of it is that there’s a duality to it that anybody in any age range in any culture, sub-culture, musical preference will love the makeup line.” Case in point: the Lock-It Foundation. It may be a full coverage formula with a matte finish, which isn’t everyone’s favourite texture, we know – but Von D suggests mixing in a bit of her Lock-It Featherweight Primer for a lighter and dewier finish.
If you’ve had your eye on Kat Von D Beauty for awhile now, we’re sure you already know what you’re going to grab from the Sephora shelves the moment the brand officially launches in July. If you’re not as sure, for starters, you can make a beeline for the Tattoo Liner and Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks – they’re not Sephora USA’s bestselling lipstick line for no good reason (we hear people practically fight each other to get their hands on coveted shades like Lolita, a dark pinkish nude). As we count down to July, we’ve rounded up six of the most iconic Kat Von D Beauty products that you’ll definitely have to try, and got Von D herself to tell you why you’ll love each one:

1. Tattoo Liner, $32
tattoo liner

This liquid eyeliner is quite legendary indeed. Besides the formula that promises to stay on for a full 24 hours – like a day-long tattoo – the brush is made up of precisely 325 bristles to allow full control whether you want a super-fine line, or a thick cat eye. “People are really intimidated, I think, if they don’t know how to wear eyeliner,” says Von D. “They’re really scared of doing it because they haven’t practiced it, but the component really makes it super easy, so I think the person who’s a rookie or amateur is going to love it just as much as the pro makeup artist.” Take note, if you think you’re an eyeliner amateur.

2. Studded Kiss Lipstick, $32
studded kiss lipsticks

These are available in a whopping 39 shades, each one super-pigmented and in a matte finish. And they all come in a gorgeous black studded tube that’s super badass. “We have this Color Cushion formula that we patented, so it has a 10-hour claim on it. Although it’s not 24-hour wear, it still has a nice comfortable matte finish that’s not going to fall off, or feather or bleed. I think when it comes to really highly pigmented shades, that’s something that’s very important, because nothing looks worse than red lipstick that’s bleeding into your whole face,” says Von D. We definitely agree.
Don’t expect her to launch glosses anytime soon, though, if shiny lips are more up your alley. Von D’s a matte lip kind of girl, through and through. “I was talking to my development team and they’re like, gloss is making a comeback. I’m like, I know, but I f*king hate gloss! I have hair and how do people wear pigmented gloss and not get it in their hair? I don’t know, I think it only looks good in pictures. I kind of just stay away from gloss, but you know, there are other companies that will make gloss for you,” she tells us with a laugh.

3. Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, $31
everlasting liquid lipsticks

We’re the most excited about this one. The 26 shades go on so pigmented, and although they’re matte, Vitamin E and sunflower seed wax make sure they don’t dry our your lips without compromising on the lasting power (this really doesn’t transfer).
“That one’s a home run,” states Von D. “There’s nothing that I’m going to tell you that’s going to sell it more than you just trying it. There’s a reason why it’s the number one lipstick in Sephora as we currently speak. The shade range is amazing, but I think the formula itself is great. It’s longwearing, it’s comfortable, and it’s highly-pigmented. I have tested every single longwear lipstick out there right now and I’ve still yet to find a formula that I like better. And I’m not just saying that because I made it.”

4. Lock-It Foundation, $56
lock it foundation

Rest assured a wide variety of skin tones are included with the 17 shades in this foundation range; and yes, this is the famous foundation that’s able to cover up tattoos without a trace – it’s just that pigmented. The matte finish promises to stand up to the heat and humidity here, but without the dry, patchy effect that less well-made matte foundations tend to leave.
“I love it, it’s my absolute, absolute favourite foundation formula,” declares Von D.  “I’ve never worn anything else since I launched this. I think what people here are going to love is that as far as heat and humidity goes, this is really the best bulletproof foundation formula that doesn’t cake up or make you feel dry. It’s great for all skin types, it’s oil-free and buildable, and you can actually do a very lightweight formula version of it if you mix it with the Lock-It Primer. Or you can just do layers of it and it still looks really beautiful, with a really nice porcelain, matte finish.”

5. Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette, $73
eye contour palette

If you’re already a face contouring whiz, you might be keen to level up to the next big thing: eye contouring. This palette has all you’ll ever need for contoured eyes, with the 12 shades grouped into three categories: neutral, cool and warm. It comes with a how-to guide, don’t worry, so you won’t be left to navigate it all by yourself. “For a neutral eye the formula really lends itself to blending,” says Von D. “It’s a triple-milled formula, and there’s 60% more pigment in all of my shadows than most brands in Sephora, and that gives you an idea of how rich the colours are.”

6. Metal Crush Eyeshadow, $32
metal crush eyeshadows

“The Metal Crush Eyeshadow is amazing,” declares Von D. “I think there’s a reason why the price point is a little bit higher on this, that’s because the formulation itself is really super special – it really lends itself to a different path than any other eyeshadow that I’ve ever tried.” We’re very inclined to agree with her: the 9 shades available are made of pigment-saturated powders that go on really creamy onto the skin, and each of the metallic shades can start a real party on your eyes.

Kat Von D Beauty will be available at Sephora and on sephora.sg from July 2016. katvondbeauty.com

The Handy Man Can

Do you remember that handycam your dad used to bring out whenever there was a family event? Yeah, that kinda died out and got replaced by a slew of smartphones and DSLRs that can take videos, and then some. But Sony is looking to bring back the now classic device with even more advanced video recording capabilities to match up to its jack-of- all-trades competitors.
You’d think that devices like smartphones and DSLRs are great because they can do more than they should, but stuf ng them with more technology than the ones they’re supposed to have does sometimes lower the overall quality of the product. Back in the day, cameras took photos, phones connected people, PDAs stored personal information and handycams were the thing to record precious moments in video format. Today, Sony’s new handycams feature some of the best technologies available to create some really amazing quality videos that DSLRs and smartphones just cannot achieve… at least for now.
The new FDR-AXP55 and HDR-PJ675 handycams are both great devices to have. But like all big-ticket purchases, there are many factors you should take into consideration before picking the most suitable one for yourself; like the purpose of making videos in the first place (are you on your way to becoming a travel vlogger?), how frequent you’ll see yourself using the handycam and most importantly, your budget.

sonyhandycams3
The FDR-AXP55 is clearly the brand’s star product because of its 4K-video recording capability whereas the HDR-PJ675 can only support Full HD. Although they both can shoot still and moving images at a wide angle of 26.8mm (16:9 aspect ratio), they use very different types of lenses. The FDR-AXP55 is equipped with the new ZEISS™ Vario-Sonnar T lens that’s made to capture even the tiniest details thanks to its Advanced Aspherical and Extra-low Dispersion lens elements, as compared to the Sony original G Lens that the HDR-PJ675 uses. If you’ve always been a fan of slow motion videos, the FDR-AXP55 is able to shoot videos at 100fps in Full HD, meaning you’ll be able to slow down the footage to add a new dimension to your videos (we bet your smartphone can’t do this in high quality). Unfortunately, there isn’t such an option for the HDR- PJ675, but you can film the next best thing – time-lapse videos in Full HD (though the FDR-AXP55 can do it in 4K).
This is exactly why it’s important to think about how either of these devices can help to make your life a little better (that’s what technology is supposed to do right?). Differences aside, both cameras will benefit from the advanced Balanced Optical SteadyShotTM as it suppresses camera shake on five different axes; a technology that was first introduced in the Sony a7 II in December 2014 to much applause. You’ll also be able to “screen” your videos instantly from both models with the built-in projectors so your family won’t have to huddle around you to take a look at what you just shot. Alternatively, you could upload all your footage onto Sony’s free PlayMemories Home™ PC software for all your editing and organising needs.

Sony FDR-AXP55, $2,299; HDR-PJ675, $1,299. Available at all Sony Stores, Sony Centres and selected Sony authorised dealers. sony.com.sg

This Just In: Dyson's First Ever Hair Dryer

The world stopped for a minute yesterday, when king of vacuums, fans, and hairdryers Dyson announced its first foray into the beauty world – with the Dyson Supersonic, first and foremost a hair dryer but above all a leap forward in hair care technology. Trust us when we say that this is the chilli padi of all hair dryers – light, compact, but packs a powerful punch with a fast and focused airflow. In fact, the motor used to power it is Dyson’s smallest, lightest, and most advanced creation yet, and runs up to eight times faster than other hair dryer motors but weighs only half the weight, furreal.

But our favourite feature of all has to be the intelligent features, which promise a quieter motor and self-correcting intelligent heat control. When you hold the Supersonic close to your head, sensors measure the surrounding temperature and send signals to the in-built microprocessor, to control the heating element and prevent heat damage to your hair, so it stays glossy and healthy. And you know what that means – no more worrying about late night showers and hair drying sessions; waking up the entire house or risk going to bed with hurriedly dried heat damaged hair will never be a cause for concern again.

The Dyson Supersonic comes with four heat settings, three airflow settings, and a cold shot – an ode, again, to the capabilities of an unassuming, tiny handheld hair dryer. Well, all we can say is: a $100million on investments well spent; the Supersonic drops officially in the third quarter of the year, but it already seems like quite the revolutionary new hair toy.

Moleskine x Game of Thrones: New Notebooks, And An Epic GoT Intro Made Entirely Out Of Paper

The night is dark and full of terrors. But the day? Oh, glorious day is filled with things as delightful as this, a new Moleskine collection of Game of Thrones notebooks displaying the most noble houses of Westeros — or, our frontrunners for the Iron Throne. As of right now that is, because it’s always a “you know nothing” situation when it comes to George R. R. Martin.

Stark, Lannister or Targaryen? Go ahead, pick a side! The limited edition notebooks are created in collaboration with HBO, and pay tribute to the imagination and storytelling of the GoT universe. We get four themed notebooks, all with hard covers of silkscreen prints by designer Levente Szabò, that bear the proud sigils of the three dominant houses, as well as a collector’s edition box set that sees the Iron Throne (in flames, no less). You can bet there’ll be neat graphics on the inside too.

There’s also a video created to celebrate the launch, one that recreates the GoT intro, epic theme music and all, but with the fortress at King’s Landing constructed entirely out of paper. What is this sorcery? You’d better believe it’s better than any Lord of the Light nonsense (except for the crazy magic that’s keeping Melissandre looking this youthful at 400 years old). Created by Milan-based video and animation studio Dadomani, you get the cogs and gears turning piece-by-piece, the 3-D towers folding into itself, and then finally, as the camera pulls back, the paper pieces collapsing neatly into the notebooks.

Just remember, pledge your allegiance to the right side.
