When Did "Basic" Become The Biggest Insult Of Our Generation?

Recently, somewhere on my Facebook feed there surfaced a spreadsheet of sorts detailing the characteristics of someone who’s “basic” – specific to Singapore. Unsurprisingly, it was the brainchild of a bunch of male Reddit users who probably had too much time on their hands or too little luck scoring with the ladies. While it started out easy – inciting a few knowing chuckles about “hipster bros” and Wheeler’s Yard photos – the discussion quickly spiraled into judgmental aggression. The not-so-surprising trigger? When the thread moved away from laughing at themselves in good fun, to listing traits of the average Singaporean girl. As someone who identifies with a lot of the “offences” listed but would rather be shot than be called basic, it got me thinking – when did just being a girl suddenly become such a detestable crime?
According to the thread, some of the ghastly traits of being “Singaporean basic” include wearing Adidas shoes, eating frozen yogurt (specifically llaollao; how dare we indulge in foreign dairy treats on a hot day!) and most damningly of all: high-waisted shorts. Oh hold on, you mean to say that dressing the way that makes me feel comfortable and confident is a sure sign of conforming to the masses, which therefore strips me of all personality?
I instantly felt defensive reading the spreadsheet; “I’m not basic! Far from it; I’ve got a fair amount of smarts, wit and personality to eliminate me from that category, so I’m good.” And then I realised – this wasn’t the first time I tried to prove my unbasic-ness when someone called me out for liking something a typical basic bitch would. I once got into a petty cold war with a male friend who had Instagrammed a picture of the very word, with just my name gracing the caption. When I demanded he list exactly why I was so offensively basic to him, he replied weakly, “Because you like One Direction!” Before that I had felt hurt and bitched about, the butt of a joke I wasn’t invited to; but after that pathetic comeback all I felt was indignant. Why had I as a substantial human being gotten narrowed down to a single word based on one personal bubblegum-pop preference? The ridiculousness of labeling only truly became apparent when I became the target of one. Just like so many negative labels that have come and gone (but more often stayed), this was just another meaningless one riddled with hate, contempt and false superiority. And whether it’s in the realm of gender politics or class, it’s never fair to be looked down on simply because you had the misfortune to genuinely like something everyone else does too.

It quickly became clear how much “basic” seemed to align itself with misogyny. The thread detailed, almost with a vengeance, the sins of writing Instagram captions a certain way – almost entirely exclusive to female behaviour – or behaving in a way the dominant heterosexual male wouldn’t (hugging, for crying out loud!!)
Of course women aren’t exempt from bullying with the word “basic” too; quite the opposite – I’m pretty brutal in doling out unwanted judgment. But bear in mind that from the beginning this was a thread titled ‘What is the Singaporean equivalent of a “basic bitch”?’, created by and for men. Very early in it didn’t even seem to be about basic bitches anymore than it was about girls in general, all from the POV of Singaporean guys banding together to get stuff off their chest. At one point it seemed like there’s no winning the patriarchy; you’re either a basic bitch with no individuality or you have a “golden cheese pie”, too uppity and selective for the common folk – who ironically are the ones shunning the basic bitches. Had the word “basic” become synonymous with “slut”?
To be fair, there were some gallant lads who joined in the conversation to help point out the ridiculous double standards taken towards female promiscuity – although they were quickly shot down. Something about there being a grey area between the two extremes inhabited by a sweet girl-next-door who “picks guys she really loves” seemed to somehow prove that it wasn’t just male prejudice rearing its ugly head. The mini discussion ended with mansplaining of how, unlike a basic bitch, a GCP would expect materialistic gifts and other stereotypically chivalrous acts, but in return wouldn’t put out. Of course; because at the end of the day it’s sex that determines the quality of a relationship.
via GIPHY

Urban dictionary defines basic as “An adjective used to describe any person, place, or activity involving obscenely obvious behavior, dress, action” – which honestly doesn’t even sound half as bad as what we’ve come to make it out to be. These days, practically everything has become a damnation – we roll our eyes at the next person dressed in Nike Roshes, Kanken/Herschel casually slung over their shoulder as they stop to caption their photos ‘~wanderlust~’, because these are “obvious” choices we’d never make ourselves; the rare occasion that we do we make excuses that these choices are made with self-awareness and bring us real happiness. Yet… they aren’t to others?
There will always be a grain of elitism in anyone who takes pride in labeling a person as basic, and maybe that’s where the root of the problem lies. And maybe that’s also why so many people simply took a chuckle out of the spreadsheet, passively liking and sharing the post, so that hopefully then they would be perceived as the “non-basic” ones, a cut above the rest. They would be the ones brandishing the upper hand from their ivory towers, safe away from the filth of the common folk. I don’t deny that I used to be one of them, but hopefully the first step forward to making amends is acknowledging a flawed mentality, and steering clear of it. And instead of running away from the truth that perhaps I too am basic, I should just embrace it, because like every other label that’s ever been handed out – “basic” reveals more about the name-caller than it does me. And that unless you only ever walk around in black, shapeless clothing eating hawker food, you’re probably pretty basic yourself too, BRO.
But don’t mind me; I’m off to queue for Honey Creme (“or whatever hipster shit”) in my high-waisted shorts, and you can bet your ass I’m gonna Instagram the hell out of it.

We're All About LACOSTE's SS16 Colourful Womenswear

How does one stay relevant? Why, constant reinvention to keep up with the times, of course. And that’s exactly what LACOSTE’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection hopes to do, with pieces that perfectly embody the brand’s esteemed heritage, while keeping it real in 2016 with modern touches.

007_LACOSTE_SS16_Womenswear_Look_Book 015_LACOSTE_SS16_Womenswear_Look_Book 004_LACOSTE_SS16_Womenswear_Look_Book

Designed by Creative Director Felipe O Iveira Baptista, the collection celebrates the brand’s sport-inspired spirit, elegant simplicity, and functional versatility. In fact, the designs take explicit inspiration from the Olympic aesthetic of the 1930s – particularly that of national flags proudly wrapped around victorious athletes onstage, which remain a glorious vision even till today. Expect clean, simple sporting lines driven by the need to enhance performance, but topped with that effortless elegance that somehow still manages to incorporate lots of feel-good colour.

And of course, you can look forward to a whole new line of slip-ons and sneakers, in a generous range of colours and all emblazoned with the feisty green croc we’ve come to really appreciate. No prizes for guessing why these looks are so tennis court-appropriate; they push us head over heels in love.

Why You Should Give Traditional Facial Treatments A Shot

Sometimes, old is gold. We like our facial treatments to come with lasers and LED lights to give us young and glowing skin the high-tech way, but we’ve also learnt that the traditional methods can work just as well – it also helps that these often come with a nice, soothing massage that drains all the nasty stuff out of our facial lymph nodes.
We’ve rounded up a range of facial treatments based on traditional techniques and ingredients to try, when you decide the meridian points on your face (more on that later) need some tender loving care.

Body Contour Premier 3D Gua Sha Facelift
body contour premier

In the olden times, people didn’t have the fancy antioxidant products we have at our disposal now, so keeping the skin young had to be done using more manual techniques. The Chinese turned to gua sha (刮痧), which literally translates into “scraping bruises”, referring to bruises with a sand-like texture that appear on the skin as a result of the said scraping. Sounds scary as hell? Maybe, but we take some comfort in the knowledge that gua sha for the body is different from what’s done on the face – the therapist won’t be scraping your face till it bruises, very thankfully.
A small medicinal tool resembling a board is used to gently (important emphasis here) massage and stimulate the face, with the aim of promoting qi energy flow, thus detoxifying the skin. It also helps lift and define facial contours, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and brighten the skin, among other anti-aging benefits, as the therapist uses the gua sha tool to target 18 acupressure points on your face. No bruising, promise.
3D Gua Sha Facelift, $380 for a 90-minute treatment. Available at all Body Contour Premier outlets (see website for full listing). bodycontour.com.sg

Korea Beauty Centre Lymphatic Korean Kyung-rak Facial

This is how the Korean ladies drain the toxins from their lymph nodes: with a Kyung-rak deep tissue massage, targeting the parts of the face known as the meridian points where energy is believed to flow. Korea Beauty Centre’s spa director Sira Nam explains this: “Meridians are energy streams that control our every function. When these are blocked, our mental and physical health will be affected. Kyung-rak addresses energy imbalances and releases tension while enhancing circulation, detoxification and tonification.”
The 80-minute session includes a neck, shoulders and chest massage as well, and follows the sequence of cleanse-mask-massage-mask. Kyung-rak is said to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, and the spa also offers a Kyung-rak body massage, which we can imagine must be a real treat for tired and tense muscles.
Lymphatic Korean Kyung-rak Facial, $130 for a 80-minute treatment. Available at Korea Beauty Centre, #05-05 Cuppage Plaza. koreabeauty.com.sg

Skinperfect Phototherapy Cupping Facial
skinperfect
(Image: groupon.com.sg)
The cupping here isn’t the terrifying kind you usually find in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinics, where they light a flame in a glass cup and press it into your skin, creating a suction effect meant to heal muscles – but also leaving you with huge, unsightly round marks in the process. Rest assured you won’t be walking out with ring-shaped bruises on your face after this treatment; Skinperfect uses a specialised machine with mini cups and a very gentle suctioning force, to boost circulation in the skin and firm up facial contours by targeting the face’s meridian points (yup, these traditional therapies seem to be all about the meridian points).
The cool thing about this treatment is that is combines the traditional with the high-tech, also using phototherapy in the form of red, blue and amber LED light to target aging skin.
Skinperfect Phototherapy Cupping Facial, $88 for 80 mins (price of first trial). Available at SkinPerfect outlets (see website for full listing). skinperfect.com.sg

Ikeda Spa Geisha Organic Facial
ikeda spa
(Image: ikedaspa.com)
So how do geishas maintain their legendary fair beauty? The answer might turn your stomach a bit – it’s all thanks to uguisu no fun, or in English, nightingale droppings. The idea of putting what is essentially bird sh*t on our face made us recoil at first, but hey, this is a facial that Victoria Beckham and Oprah swear by; and if it’s Hollywood-approved, we’re willing to try it.
Ikeda Spa’s version also includes very Japanese natural active ingredients like rice bran, camellia oil and azuki red beans, and applied onto the skin using a Japanese-style meridian massage technique, to leave you with fair and smooth skin worthy of a geisha.
Ikeda Spa Geisha Organic Facial, $240++ for 90 mins. Available at Ikeda Spa, at 787 Bukit Timah Road and Ikeda Spa Prestige, #05-22 The Central. ikedaspa.com

How To Nail That 'KYE for shu' K-Pop Look

Now, we’ve talked about the KYE for shu collection before, but we can’t help bringing it up again, especially since any K-beauty trend seems to be instantly popular, post-DOTS or not. To recap, this is a fun collection that’s inspired by the edgy street style aesthetic of Korean fashion designer Kathleen Kye, and all of the products feature her trademark illustrations on the packaging. The look’s bold and suitably edgy as well, but we’ll get to that later. We had a first-hand experience with the collection when we went for a KYE for shu makeover that involved lots of time at the Kimage hair salon, and professional makeup by the shu uemura experts.
5Y3A4519_crop
The K-pop star treatment first meant more than six hours at the salon, which went into double-bleaching my hair, before sectioning off parts of my hair to layer on the colour. My stylist chose to go for a subtle look — as subtle as bleached hair can get — by dye-ing the top half of my head ash brown, which then tapers into a riot of pinks and purples. Still, there was a bit of ash grey for that nice faded effect (trendy!), and the “random”, layered mix meant that there seemed to be more shades in my hair than the colours used. Pro tip: always opt for the treatment, because it makes your hair instantly more manageable.
Of course, we’re here for the makeup, and here, the KYE for shu collection calls for a bold, K-pop-inspired look that’s equal parts cool and wearable. The highlight? A sharp graphic eye line, and strong tinted brows, seen in this “Exotic Kool” look. Sure, I had a makeup artist do my face, but you’ll find that the look’s just as easy to replicate at home, with some practice and the right tools, naturally. Here’s how you can get started:

makeup1

STEP 1 — Base Makeup
Can we really escape the cushion foundation when it comes to K-Beauty? Nope. But that’s a good thing — when patted on, the cushion formula goes on light, thus giving the bright, radiant skin you see in Korean dramas, and it’s also incredibly easy to carry around in case you need a touch-up. Start first by priming your skin with the under base mousse, then the foundation, and lastly, finish off with the lightbulb glowing face powder. The last step ensures your foundation stays put, while natural translucent powders also provide a soft-lit glow to your skin.

products: UV under base mousse; blanc:chroma brightening UV cushion foundation compact case, $20 for case + puff, $55 for refill; lightbulb glowing face powder, $39

makeup2

STEP 2 — Graphic Eyes
Start off by drawing a sharp line on the upper and lower eye lines with your drawing pencil — the waterproof, smudge-proof gel pencil has a soft texture that goes on easy, but still allows for a precise eyeline, especially great when you’re going for something trickier here. Try double open eyelining, leaving open gaps on both the tail and inner corner for an elongated, graphic look. Instead of leaving it all black though, draw and slightly blend the kye for shu drawing pencil in navy on top of your upper eye line — the navy is a fun and subtle way of adding a pop of colour to your eyes, made more impactful when it catches the light. Finish off by coating your lashes with mascara.

products: lasting gel pencil eye liner in M black 01, $24; kye for shu drawing pencil in ME navy 61, $33; petal lash mascara, $28

makeup3

STEP 3 — Bold Brows
Tinted brows are said to be the next big trend, and as you know, youthful square brows are already a K-beauty archetype, so here’s where you get to be more playful with your look. Continue the graphic eye feel by drawing a straight eye brow with the brow:palette, layering on brown shades as a base and creating a slightly rounded arch. Then, use the brow:sword, in both dark rose and dark violet for an ombre look. Start first by filling in the outer half of your brows with the violet shade, then, layer the rose shade from the inner parts of your brow and blend outwards. If you’re feeling more adventurous, play it up with an eyebrow manicure — start from the highest point of the brow, lift up the hair, and brush back. This creates a more filled-in, three-dimensional look.

products: brow:palette in cappuccino x dark rose, $53; brow:sword in dark rose and dark violet, $53 each; eyebrow manicure in dark violet, $42

makeup4

STEP 4 — Cheeks & Lips
Finally, the look also calls for bright shades, but these are kept to natural, peachy tones in light layers. Apply a thin layer of the cushion cheek in hibiscus pink to the apples of the cheek. This gives a dewy glow that’s also fresh and young. Then, glide on a sheer layer of colour balm, in a matching peach tone. It’s said to enhance your natural lip colour with a hint of neon glow, meaning a sheer finish that glints under the sun.

products: fresh cushion blush in hibiscus pink, $48; sheer colour balm in ‘hugged in peach’, $33

White Sneakers Will Change Your Life and Here's Why

White sneakers. You’ve seen them on Instagram and in real life, gracing the feet of practically every decently dressed millennial; and you’ve either tried to assert your individuality and ignore the insane hype, or secretly wondered if you too should cave and get a pair. Here’s our take – duh, you should. Trust us when we say that we too used to be indifferent to the boons of a classic white sneaker, but when curiosity struck, something beautiful was born – a wizened, genuine appreciation of the simple shoe that has officially become our favourite footwear staple.
Still need a little extra convincing? Read ahead, good child.

1. They go with everything
And we actually mean everything; just like a black shoe, white doesn’t clash, and instead can pull your outfit together nicely. It’s a wonder why some people are afraid that white is a colour that’s “hard to match”; we blame it on its sheer “brightness” that might often seem intimidating to those more comfortable with darker tones. Well here’s some good news – not only will your white sneakers match your dark ensemble, it adds a pop of monochrome-approved “colour” too.

2. They’re slimming

Images from DKNY and Joseph SS16 respectively.

You’ve got to be kidding, you level your half-lidded gaze at us in skepticism. Surprise surprise: in the same vein of white adding colour to a dark ensemble, that subtle white pop brings attention away from the heaviness of your darkly clad torso – down to your feet where the cleanness of the white seals the whole outfit neatly. Sure, black may be slimming in playing with shadows to hide unflattering lumps and bumps, but wearing black down to your toes can sometimes work against this shadow play and turn you into a shapeless, colourless splodge of black instead. White sneakers or white shoes in general break up the solid silhouette and give you more room to play with shapes and cutting, particularly if you were to experiment with looser, boxier fits on your top and bottom.

3. They look more polished than regular sneakers
Ergo they’ll even work in the office! We say this based on the assumption that you aren’t a lawyer or banker restricted to formal attire everyday, and that most companies are moving away from strict 9-to-5 dress codes. Going on that, all-white sneakers do a pretty good job masquerading as white dress shoes, and therefore go with trousers, culottes, blouses, tailored shirts and even dress pants. You’ll be amazed at how easily you find yourself reaching for your white sneaks getting ready in the morning, whether it’s to complete a chic smart casual ensemble that will take you from day to night, or to try and add some order to a last-minute outfit you chucked on because you woke up late.

4. They’re daintier
Unlike dark coloured sneakers which can look rough (depending on material and make), white sneakers naturally look softer and more feminine – which means they’ll go better with skirts and dresses; and can even tone down a more boyish, androgynous outfit.

5.They’ll land you an interview with Ellen!
Screen Shot 2016-04-25 at 12.25.52 PM

Okay, we jest. But hey if two high school boys can go viral with Snapchat, comic perseverance, and a pair of trusty white Vans, who’s to say you can’t too? (For those out of the loop, check out the shoes that made Damn Daniel famous here.)

Even though we don’t have the four seasons here in Singapore, it does get hotter in the middle of the year. Can you believe we’re experiencing 36-degree temperatures?! Craaaaazy. Thankfully, fashion brands are gearing up to battle the heat and this month, we look to Fossil’s Summer 2016 Collection.

They’re known for their vintage-inspired, creatively-charged, beautifully crafted accessories (they’ve used a playful mix of materials like rope, straw, fringe and embroidery) and outfits. The women’s line in their Summer 2016 collection focuses on two distinct hues – rich blue pigments and off-white/blush tones. Fossil draws inspiration from the craft of indigo dying, textile weaving and selvedge denim and has taken cues from the soft glazes used in ceramic pottery. You can expect indigo colourblock dresses, light denim blue tops, off-white blouses, peach-coloured jeans and many other pieces with a mixture of textures.

What's Going Down At The 2016 Billboard Music Awards

This just in: the feisty award-winning P!nk will be taking the stage at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards – performing none other than what’s gonna be the world television debut of her new single “Just Like Fire”. If the song sounds familiar, it’s because it will feature in Disney’s upcoming film Alice Through The Looking Glass, which brings back your favourite star-studded cast and characters from the 2010 film, in an all-new topsy-turvy adventure. So of course, what better songstress to ring in the festivities with a global performance than the pop icon whose very name matches her vibrant personality?

Also, you can’t have an awards show without a titillating lineup of nominees fighting to the death to bring home the prize, so you can bet how psyched we were to find out who’s up for what. Leading the pack is The Weeknd with 16 nominations (shocker, really), followed by The Biebs with 11. That said, we’ve also got our eye on Adele and Taylor Swift, who’re both going in with nominations in eight categories – let’s hoping that if the latter wins again (and she probably will; girl’s got 20 Billboard wins in the bag), she’ll lay low on the shady acceptance speeches.

This Nail Polish Range Is A Real Miracle

We often find ourselves in a nail polish conundrum. Regular nail polish formulas have chipped off in literally hours on our nails – yes, we might just be that rough, but it can really be quite ridiculous how quickly a painstakingly-DIYed manicure can come off. And when we need something that lasts, we turn to a gel manicure at the salon, but we’re sure we don’t have to educate you on how bad these actually are for your nails; the fragile, cracked state your nails are left in once a gel mani comes off should be testament enough. There’s also having to go all the way back to the salon when you want to have your gel colour removed, only to subject your poor nails to violent buffing and scraping, leaving them to languish in an even worse state after.
So what’s a girl to do for pretty, polished nails that last a decent amount of time? We were all ready to settle for either polish that comes off in days, or damaged and weak nails if we want something more permanent. Until Sally Hansen arrived to save the day with their Miracle Gel range – we tried it, and we have to say “Miracle” is just about right.

The premise here is that you get the high-shine and lasting power of a gel manicure, but without having to use a UV lamp; it also comes right off with regular nail polish remover, no desperate buffing required. The magic is in the technology and the formula: both the colour and the top coat contain an oligomer that allow them to bond tightly together, and this bonding is activated by the exposure of a photoinitiator in the top coat to natural light. Once the colour has been set with the top coat, the formula also cures over time, allowing your manicure to last longer.

Since what we like in a regular gel manicure is how it makes nails look extra shiny and full, Sally Hansen has recently improved its Miracle Gel Top Coat to give your nails twice the volume and shininess. Think it’s too good to be true? The brand’s issued us a challenge: try the Miracle Gel range for yourself, and if there’s anything you’re not satisfied with, they’ll give you your money back as long as it’s within 90 days of purchase (with less than half the product used, and presentation of the original proof of purchase). From 21 April to 21 July 2016, call the toll-free hotline at 1800-385-3772 if you’d like to use your money back guarantee on a Miracle Gel product (we hardly think you’ll need to, though).

Three new summer-ready shades will soon be added to the range, bringing up the total number of shade options to 25. Digi-teal is a cheery turquoise, Midnight Mod is a inky dark blue that’s easily flattering, and Slate-r Girl is a fashion-forward grey. Maybe blue nails are a trend we’re often afraid to try, but we promise these shades aren’t in the least tacky, and are right on-trend for the current Spring/Summer season. Give the Miracle Gel a shot, and you might just not have to see the inside of a nail salon for some time.

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel, $16.90 each. Digi-teal, Midnight Mod and Slate-r Girl will be available from 21 April 2016, at major Watsons and Guardian stores. Follow Sally Hansen on Facebook at facebook.com/SallyHansenSingapore and on Instagram @sallyhansensg.

Clone The Orphan Black Looks – By Stealing Their Style

With the recent premiere of the fourth season of Orphan Black, the one thing on our minds is – how can we dress like the five clone leads? All right, not really; we’ve obviously got a lot more going on trying to catch up and all, but it’s still a recurring wonder at how one actress can inhabit five entirely different personas. Without further ado, here’s our five leading ladies and how you can achieve their signature looks.

Sarah Manning

sarah_collage
1. Jeans, Rag & Bone
2. Tank, Haider Ackermann
3. Gloves, Jill Sander
4. Leather Jacket, Saint Laurent
5. Shoes, Balenciaga

Badass mofo clone? Check. Where would nimble Sarah Manning be without her staple leather jacket and general all-black attire, which certainly signal her daring street smarts and con artist stealth. Switch out her wax-coated black pants for trendy black skinnies with knee rips, for a look that’s more everyday-appropriate and less Teenage Spy.

Alison Hendrix

alison_collage
1. Jacket, Banana Republic
2. Top, Pepper & Mayne
3. Polo, Stella McCartney
4. Joggers, Uniqlo
5. Shades, Chloé
6. Coat, Moncler

Nail the Slightly Psychotic Soccer Mom look with a classic aryan wool cardi and straight leg jeans, or level up to a homemaker-appropriate puffy down coat for the colder months – guaranteed roomy enough to hide all your darkest secrets. But if you’d prefer to actually make Alison’s look wearable, polos and conservatively cut tops in cream shades or Alison’s favourite blush pink work; remember to pair with comfy bottoms your own mother would approve of.

Cosima Niehaus

cosima_collage
1. Top, Acne Studios
2. Dress, Raey
3. Scarf, Alexander McQueen
4. Bag, Balenciaga
5. Ring, Gucci
6. Cuff, Valentino

Boho-chic Cosima seems to be seen exclusively in burgundy tones and aztec prints, which somehow work brilliantly against her dreadlocks and geeky black frames. The West Coast-born biology student sure likes her accessories, so pile it on with an effortlessly cool Alexander McQueen scarf and clunky arm candy.

Helena

helena_collage
1. Blouse, Jiles
2. Parka, Mr & Mrs Italy
3. Dress, Rochas
4. Shirt, Bottega Women
5. Boots, Isabel Marant
6. Stiletto Boots, Vetements

We’ll leave you to OD on red eyeshadow for that insane sleepless beauty look, but otherwise it’s pretty easy to recreate the Ukrainian-raised clone’s general style. Think gingham checks, gaudy florals, and Victorian style white lace and ruffles – and that iconic green parka with a faux fur hood, of course.

Rachel Duncan

rachel_collage
1. Dress, Bimba Y Lola
2. Blazer, Jill Sander
3. Shirt, Haider Ackermann
4. Skirt, MaxMara
5. Clutch, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci
6. Heels, Christian Louboutin

And finally, dressing like the ruthless, no-nonsense hard-ass that is Rachel Duncan. Hide your mummy issues with a polished power pantsuit and neatly tailored co-ordinates – so clean and sharp they’ll literally cut you. And as cutthroat as Rachel may be, her taste for quality and the finer things in life will leave you admiring her impeccable dress sense, right down to the slick black stiletto Louboutins.

Here's What's Happening This Weekend

National Theatre Live: Hamlet

11863348_10153080462608857_9112813709979559505_n

Hold on… A movie screening of a theatre production all the way from the Barbican in London…? Might sound like an odd concept, but having personally watched a screening ourselves, we give it our 110% recommendation (scout’s honour) – especially since it comes from the National Theatre Live, a cinema group specialising in first class broadcasts of London productions, to everyone else in the world. And of course, what better impetus to watch than having Benedict Cumberbatch as the leading man Hamlet himself? The actor’s impressive emotional brevity is put to the test in this Shakespearean tragedy, and is stirringly bolstered by the cinematic lighting and stage effects; to the point that you’ll be on your toes the entire three hours. Cumberbitches beware, you might just develop a newfound appreciation for Shakespeare after this.
Date: 21, 23, and 24 April 2016
Time: 7.30pm, 2pm, and 5pm respectively
Admission: $22 – $27
Tickets available at sistic.com.sg/events/hamlet0416

Everyday Folk Market at Enabling Village
SE16_0193_EVFM_Static-Wb-Banner_Hires

The Everyday Folk Market series is back, kicking off with a little collab between The Local People (ie. the same guys who brought you the crazily packed 90s Art Market at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station last month) and Enabling Village, a community space home to social businesses and supporting people with disabilities. We can’t promise it won’t be a barrage of hipsters like the last time, but if you decide to go, look forward to good food, music and art. In celebrating inclusivity, there will be over 50 booths offering unique artisanal works and originals by artists from the special needs community. In addition, local art collective Band of Doodlers will be transforming an art wall live, where you too can join in with a marker; or you could just kick back in the Airmocks lounge area to enjoy short film screenings from The Little Red Ants production house. Sounds like a good way to spend a Saturday evening.
Date: 23 April 2016
Time: 4pm to 9pm
Venue: Enabling Village, 20 Lengkok Bahru, Singapore 159053

Flume Releases Another New Track, This Time With Tove Lo

Just a few months ago, Australian electronic music producer Flume teased us with a 4-minute preview of what’s to come in his forthcoming sophomore album, Skin, slated for release on 27 May. But he’s been very generous with his music, giving fans more insight into the album by releasing a few singles sporadically over the past few months.

We first heard the track “Never Be Like You,” which features Canadian singer Kai (he dropped the track at Laneway but we weren’t as lucky as the people in Melbourne, who saw Kai perform the song live during his set), followed by “Smoke & Retribution,” a collab with Vince Staples and Kučka that premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show in Jan, and finally the instrumental, free-for-download track “Wall F*ck”. Today, he released a track called “Say It”, which features Swedish heart-throb Tove Lo on vocals, on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show.

Flume told Annie that he was really interested in working with Tove Lo after listening to her song “Habits” after a Kanye West Show, so he contacted her the following day and they wrote the song within two days. “I wasn’t really familiar with her stuff, but I really really like it. I was like, ‘Who is this? I need to figure it out’, so I Shazam’d it,” he told Annie. How cute.
Check out the tracklist for “Say It”, courtesy of iTunes (yes you can pre-order now). It features appearances from the likes of Beck, AlunaGeorge, Little Dragon and more!

Here's How You Can Support Marvel's #TeamCap, Now In Singapore

We never thought we’d be caught up in this whole #TeamCap / #TeamIronMan hype, but come on, how can you not be involved when there are actual Hollywood movie stars descending upon our tiny tropical island? Yep, you’ve probably seen it everywhere, #TeamCap, reprecented by the trio of Chris Evans (Captain America), Anthony Mackie (Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier). Oh, and co-director Joe Russo too, which you’ll totally fangirl over after watching Captain America: Civil War and realising how brilliantly he and his brother pulled off the whole superhero #squadgoals debacle so splendidly. But hey, no spoilers here!
So, #TeamCap. They’re here in Asia, specifically near Marina Bay Sands, and probably somewhere eating chilli crab. Crazy fans from around the region have actually flown in for this series of promotional events, that includes a blue carpet walk and a whole fireworks show at the MBS area, all in a bid to support this team of supes (which involves wildly screaming in excitement over our heroes). It seems like Marvel’s just as eager to fan the flames too, as we can see from this #TeamIronMan video:

Yes, the charming RDJ makes it incredibly difficult not to switch sides… but let’s just hear from #TeamCap. At the press conference, the stars were all too eager to diss #TeamIronMan, entirely in jest though. Responding to a question on what Falcon would call the other costumes, Mackie joked, “You know, I feel like if mine’s a bird suit, Iron Man should be described as a Coca-Cola can… and Vision, should be like, a big marker!”
Other than that, Chris Evans also shares that if he had his say, Steve Rogers would be romantically linked with another Avengers hero, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). “You have two characters from very different worlds, Cap and Black Widow, who have very different backgrounds and found a kind of comfort in one another in times of distress. I always thought that would be a very interesting dynamic to pursue,” he said, though at the same time acknowledging that the two characters have a truly platonic friendship.

If you’re all up for this team, rally your troops and head to:
1. The #TeamCap Blue Carpet Event
That’s happening tonight (soon!) at the Marina Bay Sand Skating Rink, where the cast and director will make an exclusive appearance. There has been a whole lot of talk about having to buy tickets to the event, and these range from a ridiculous $688 to $1,288 for package deals that allow you to get up close with the cast members. Let’s get this straight: those are tickets to the VIP zone, with additional perks. If all you want to do is glance at Chris Evans’ perfect jawline and maybe snap a quick selfie with him — it’s totally free!
Date: 21 April, Friday
Time: 6pm – 8pm
Venue: Marina Bay Sands Skating Rink
2. The #TeamCap Lights and Fireworks Show
Hell no is Iron Man gonna get away with the whole Eiffel Tower light-up — we’re staging a showdown of our own. Singapore’s, and perhaps Asia’s, most distinctive tourism landmark, the Marina Bay Sands, will see a showstopping light-up and fireworks display over the MBS building, Helix Bridge and The Singapore Flyer, which will be one amazing visual spectacle. No word on whether Mackie will swoop down in his Falcon suit. Other than that, the MBS Event Plaza will be filled with complementary activities, including green screen photo booths, game booths, evening movie screenings of the previous Avengers and Captain America movies, Marvel artists sketch walls, a merch booth, and more, all the way till Sunday.
Date: 22 April, Friday
Time: 8pm
Viewing Points: Helix Bridge & Youth Olympic Park
3. Watch Captain America: Civil War

The early reviews show it all, and so do the tons of promo clips all over Facebook — but honestly, don’t read or watch them if you don’t want to be spoilt. You might think, ah well, yet another superhero movie, but hold up, this one’s a pretty genre-defining one. Far from being fluff, or worse, taking itself too seriously, the film strikes a sweet balance between ass-kicking action scenes and strong character moments, both gravitas and comedy, as well as heartbreak and heroism all rolled into one. Co-director Joe Russo called it “one of the most important movies to date” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it’s true — all of the brilliant character work from previous films pay off exceptionally well here, while the film has a defining stake in the future. Let’s not forget that this is the film that kickstarts the entire Phase Three of the MCU, all the way till the two Infinity War movies we’ll be getting in 2018 and 2019. We’d really wanna discuss why the movie left us on the edge of seats the entire time, reeling, despite having already read the comics, but we won’t. We can say this though — for all the #TeamCap and #TeamIronMan hype, we left the cinema unable to truly pick a side… a testament to how thoughtful a superhero movie can, and should, be.
Captain America: Civil War premieres in Singapore theatres from 28 April.

Why Your Skin Needs To Load Up On Vitamin C

Your mother might have constantly nagged at you to load up on Vitamin C whenever you caught a cold, either by eating more fruits or adding those Vitamin C capsule drinks into your daily diet. Mum’s right, though: Vitamin C actually helps boost the immune system, which is why it’s effective for preventing future occurrences of the common cold, along with other illnesses.
Turns out, we need a regular dose of Vitamin C for the skin too. Vitamin C, in the form of ascorbic acid, has antioxidant properties and promotes collagen production in the skin, which makes it key to keeping the skin young and healthy. So if you haven’t been giving your skin a regular dose, it’s time to start. And we found this product that’s especially powerful when it comes to Vitamin C: enter Dr. Ci:Labo’s VC100 Essence Lotion, which comes loaded with double the concentration of Vitamin C derivatives as compared to the previous version of the product, the VC100 Pore White Lotion.

VC100-Essence-Lotion-150ml

The Vitamin C in here isn’t just your regular ascorbic acid; what’s special about it is it’s highly permeable, 100 times more so than regular Vitamin C. This allows it to go deeper into the skin and have effects that are both fast and longer-lasting, also due to the inclusion of three other Vitamin C derivatives that help with the formula’s water and oil solubility, which contribute to the speed and lasting power of the skincare effects respectively.
Together with other beauty ingredients that don’t include any artificial fragrances, colourants, mineral oils, parabens and alcohol, this essence-lotion leaves behind poreless, brighter, firmer, and more translucent skin. The inclusion of grapefruit and orange oils also mean that this has a particularly zesty scent; after cleansing, apply a coin-sized amount onto the skin – think of it as your daily glass of orange juice for your skin.

Dr. Ci:Labo VC100 Essence Lotion, $83. Available at the Dr. Ci:Labo store at #B3-41 ION Orchard, at selected Watsons at Ngee Ann City, Raffles City and Parkway Parade, and on ci-labo.com.sg/shop.
