The King of Leisure Sportswear Is Back At It

Who doesn’t love a man in a sharp, well-tailored polo? Well, good news for all you lads – Fred Perry’s Spring/Summer 2016 line presents two brand new collections sure to spiff up your everyday wardrobe. And ladies, don’t be afraid to get in on this as well, if, yknow, your fella needs a little push in the right direction. *wink*

shot-1117-nigel-editorial-081-1  shot-1119-nigel-editorial-020-1

As always, Fred Perry nails sports-casual yet again. The first of the two collections is a patriotic collab between Fred Perry and British label Nigel Cabourn – a celebration, almost, of the authentic British manufacturing roots and heritage by both brands. Inspired by Fred Perry and Austrain footballer Tibby Wegner’s original tennis kits, as well as Nigel’s personal collection of 1950s British sportswear, the line pays tribute to leisure sports styles of the 50’s to 70’s. Expect to see classic staples like the Washed Navy Training Hoodie, matching pants, and Sports Pique Shirts directly inspired by pictures of Fred himself during his tennis coaching days. It’s timeless without being dated, and still very wearable. Plus, you can’t deny the thrill of looking like the Wimbledon star himself.

Then there’s the Men’s Laurel Wreath Collection – a selection of classic shapes redefined and updated for a sleek, contemporary edge. Delving back into the Fred Perry apparel archives, there’re the Towelling Leisure Shirts, V-Neck Pique Sweaters, and Textured Overshirts – all refined for a modern, Reiviera-inspired look. Still, the vintage element is hardly lost, so ardent Fred Perry fans can heave a sigh of relief. If anything, the collection brings to mind some familiar silhouettes – Nick Jonas’s getup as a dashing, golfing frat boy in Scream Queens, or Leo as a dressed-down Jordan Belfort in Wolf of Wall Street – leading lads we’d definitely be down to spend a day on the courts with.

Fred Perry x Nigel Cobourn Collection, $189 to $419; Men’s Laurel Wreath Collection, $189 to $439, available at the Laurel Wreath Collection Shop at Mandarin Gallery, #03-08. fredperry.com

Make It Your Own: Custom Fashion That's Actually Cool

The era of the monogram may be out — no way are we carrying one of those bags with the brand’s signature logo all over, especially the highly imitated designs. But you know what, in the current age of minimalist ware, pared down and scaled back and effortlessly stylish, it’s hard to find something that truly conveys you, save for wearing a bright orange polka dotted fur coat (we ain’t judging if that’s your style). Unless, of course, it’s stamping your initials on that said thing, something that says “ooh I spent money on this and it’s exclusively mine”. Naturally, whatever we’ve found here isn’t at all tacky — no Couple Lab rings and cheap keychains please — we’re talking about subtle monograms and custom pieces where you can detail every thread colour or placement of the stitch, for any kind of budget. In other words, custom fashion that’s actually cool:
Burberry — the Heritage Trench Coat, & the Scarf Bar

Burberry Scarf Styling - The Bandana featuring Amber Anderson The Monogrammed Burberry Heritage Trench Coat_001 The Monogrammed Burberry Heritage Trench Coat_003

Everything about the British luxury brand feels classy, and somehow, the image we most associate with the brand has to be their versatile double-breasted honey trench coat, buttons and belt loops in all the right flattering places. And in no way are they going to ruin the piece with bright monogram on the outside — instead, the Burberry Heritage Trench Coat will have the embroidery on the inside, just below the inner buttonhole. The luxurious coat will be embroidered right in Castleford, where it’s made, and you can opt for up to three initials in a selection of 15 thread colours.
Prices: Available for the Burberry Chelsea narrow fit, the Sandringham slim fit, the Kensington modern fit, and the Westminster classic fit; from $2,795
Where: Online at sg.burberry.com; all Burberry stores
As for the scarves, well, head over to The Scarf Bar at either their ION Orchard or MBS outlets to get yours made. With all the pieces made in Scotland, you can bet the quality’s great, but we’ll say this — the variety’s even greater. You get to choose from over 30 colours, in patterns of a classic check or solid colour or fun prints like polka dots and hearts, in either cashmere or lightweight material. Then, further personalise your scarf by having your initials on it, in over 30 thread colours, 2 different sizes of font, for up to three letters. If you’re completely sure what you want, ordering it online is an option too — you can then collect your custom piece from a preferred boutique after 7 days.
Prices: From $825 for a Burberry cashmere check scarf, and a monogrammed scarf will cost an additional $120 for Adults and $80 for kids
Where: Online at sg.burberry.com; Burberry ION Orchard and The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands
Coach — the Saddle bag
coach saddle bag 38219_dkoxb_a0

You know what, this New York brand has managed to be ultra-cool again, what with the recent collections by creative director Stuart Vevers, and this year, we’re keeping an eye out for the modern-meets-vintage iconic styles that the luxury brand will be putting out in its 75th Anniversary. First up, the Saddle Bag, straight from the archives of the original No. 9170 Classic Pouch bag. In 2016, this is reimagined in a glove-tanned leather with a soft leather lining and contrast edge painting, plus, a refreshing bright colour palette. The Saddle bag comes in six new colours, while a smaller version, the Saddle bag 23, comes in 12 striking colours. What’s even more fun though, is that you can add a personal touch with it, by opting for your initials on its front flap. Hey, all the It-girls are doing it.
Prices: $825 for the Coach Saddle Bag 23; and $1120 for the Coach Saddle Bag
Where: Monogramming services will only be available at Coach Wisma Atria
Louis Vuitton — Mon Monogram bags, trunks, and leather items
301125h lv_hotstamping

Ah, you probably know of this already — here’s the brand that kind of put the stamp on the monogram trend, and, they’ve gained lots of loyal followers who’d love a piece of luxurious leather, catered just for them. During a visit to the Hong Kong flagship store, we laid eyes on an artist who was doing a live demonstration of the painting that goes on the Louis Vuitton bags, truly impressive stuff. What we didn’t know (then), is that there’s a whole collection called the Mon Monogram that allows everyone to have these hand-painted, multicoloured initials and stripes on the brand’s most popular monogram handbags, luggage and wallets.
Additionally, you get to personalise new trunks as part of a special trunk painting service at the Island Maison Marina Bay Sands store, this get to be ultra-exclusive since you can work with their in-house artisan to create an original design. That is, if you’re into that whole vibe. For us, we’d stick to subtle initials — a hot stamping service is available for small leather goods and accessories at all their stores, perfect since you can have it on the inside of your wallet.
Prices: Complimentary hot stamping if you purchase any qualifying product
Where: Mon Monogram, available online; Trunk Painting Service, available at the Louis Vuitton Island Maison Marina Bay Sands store; Hot Stamping Service, online and all Louis Vuitton stores
Thomas Sabo — Love Bridge Bracelets

You must have come across one of those places while travelling — the bridges at Paris, and the N Seoul Tower comes to mind, where lovers attach padlocks engraved with their initials at these romantic sites, as a way to commemorate their deep love and everlasting commitment for each other, a grand romantic gesture that says “I love you no matter the weather(ing)”, that isn’t at all a blight on the existing infrastructure. Well, not to hate, but there’s just a better way to show the love — and of course, it’s couple wear. Or, not. You can own a Thomas Sabo bracelet and make it your own, by way of the Boho design, with  dumortierite, jasper, lapis lazuli and a round 925 Sterling silver pendant with rose gold plating that bears your initials. And if you’re feeling generous, you can gift one to your loved one, and engrave the thin metal plate with a significant word or two. The variety’s insane — there are gold, silver and rose gold-coloured pieces, with pearls or quartz or obsidian beads or and more. Just, promise to make it not-too-cheesy?
Prices: Love Bridge Bracelets and Necklaces, from $149
Where: Available online; at Thomas Sabo stores
Topshop — denim
10378950_1051819301545675_628853866708173086_n 66426_1050911858303086_1582601513554085235_n

You’ve seen this everywhere recently, and by far, this is one of the cutest things we have on our list — for every denim purchase, Topshop is offering these complimentary patches, those old-school iron-on designs that will definitely make your denim stand out in a sea of blue. You get to pick from eight designs, and these aren’t the “cute” of Hello Kitty or little girls in their polka-dotted pinafores, we like how it’s somehow edgy too in a cool Jap kinda way. Have this on a Topshop MOTO Oversized Western Shirt, denim shorts, or any of their 12,239 pairs of jeans (we’re obviously overstating, but it does seem like they do have that many designs) including the Leigh, Jamie, Joni, Mom, Hayden and Orson styles. Regrettably, they’ve recently ended their denim monogram service, but hey, you never know when the next pop-up will be, so look out!
Prices: Patches are valid while stocks last, with any purchase of a denim product
Where: All Topshop stores; head to www.wingtairetail.com.sg/topshopdenim to find out more

Jeanuine Jeans by Victor York
1 9

Here’s the case for custom jeans: they fit you, just you, better, you get to nitpick at every bit of the process, from the shape of the pockets to the colour of the thread, and you’ll therefore love it to bits. Jeanuine, a bespoke French denim brand, offers a unique service where you can personalise each pair of jeans however you want it. If you’re hitting up the website, you make a series of choices on each component of your jeans, all on the Jean Maker.
It starts with the cut – straight cut, slim cut or boot cut – followed by the colour of the denim, hem, wash, pockets, fly and zipper, buttons and rivets. At every stage, you get to choose your thread colours as well. For example, you could go cowboy-classic by picking a dark-toned denim, yellow thread, and copper rivets. If you’re looking for something edgy, you might opt for zippers as pockets, go entirely discreet with black threads, then add a minimal back pocket design. You can also head down to the Victor York boutique, where you’ll get to try a few sample pieces, get measured up, while they’ll run you through a sample book so you get a better feel of the texture. It’s all premium denim, and theirs comes from the Kurabo Mill in Japan, dyed a double-dip indigo blue.
Prices: Jeanuine Custom Jeans, from $300 for classic Turkish denim and $350 for raw Japanese selvedge denim
Where: At Victor York, 40b Boat Quay; and online at en.jeanuine.com
UNIQLO UTme! — t-shirts
Jiak Gantang! (by Joy Oh) Play Finding (by Tang Liangying)

Sometimes we hate technology, damn those double ticks and time stamps on Whatsapp when all we want to do is to be left alone, but other times we love it, including VR consoles, smartphones and anything that gets us anything instantly, on-the-spot, now. Which is why we also love UNIQLO’s t-shirt printing service — all you have to do is hit up the mobile app, customise your t-shirt, and print that design on a plain one at the UNIQLO store. It’s so straightforward you just have to try it for yourself.
Prices: Uniqlo UTme! T-shirts, $29.90 for adults and $24.90 for kids

Bynd Artisan — notebooks
20141107_Bynd_Artisan_web_02_1 20141107_Bynd_Artisan_web_07_1

Technically, you can customise any notebook — that’s what we used to do on our diaries or planners right, with plenty of stickers and washi tapes and doodling? Oh right, that’s when we used to own a pen that isn’t cosmetic/a stylus, when we used to write things down instead of tapping away on our digital calendars. If you’re into that now old-school habit of writing though, here’s something you’ll love: Bynd Artisan’s brand of custom stationery. The homegrown paper and leather goods brand does stylish leather notebooks that draw from the experience of expert craftsmen who love to preserve the art of bookbinding, and while you can always get their ready-made goods, their personalised notebooks are just a sight to behold. You can choose from an array of leatherette covers and end papers, your inner pages, binding method, and your closures, whether it’s an elastic band, flap, snap buttons, rivets or eyelets. Then, choose to have a name or initials debossed on the cover.
Prices: Bynd Artisan Customised Notebook, from $20 for an A5 book
Where: Online at byndartisan.com; or the Bynd Artisan store at 2 Chin Bee Avenue

New UTs For Your Essential Brooklyn Aesthetic

Look sharp, Uniqlo fans! If you’re very much into the Brooklyn graffiti vibe, get your wallet ready for the new Uniqlo T-Shirt (UT) collaborative line dropping this April – featuring street-style graphics from New York-based artist KAWS.

178181_00_KAWS Graphic T-shirt $19.90 Front178182_09_KAWS Graphic T-shirt $19.90
178185_52_KAWS Graphic T-shirt $19.90178178_03_KAWS Graphic T-shirt $19.90 Back

Known for his Pop Art-influenced work, KAWS is 42-year old Brian Donnelly, his penchant for street art and popular culture manifesting in a line of limited edition toys, designs and clothing. The man may seem ‘dated’, but he’s far from being past his prime in engaging the youth of today with contemporary art and design – having grown up with a visual vocabulary rich in graffiti and icon appropriation.
KAWS_KeyVisual4 179077_03_366H120A_U1_S KAWS_KeyVisual2

You’ll soon recognise his trademark character – Companion, a dystopic-looking soft skull with crossbones and crossed-out eyes, wandering almost forlornly across the UTs. Is he half-elephant, half-clown? A sort of Dumbo-meets-Bozo hybrid creature? We’ll never know. Look out also for KAWS’ signature xx mark on some of the simpler tees, which only point to the attention to detail employed on the entire collection. There are 12 designs in total, while “xx” room shoes will be available exclusively at the Suntec City and online store. Our take on these new UTs? They’re quirky but wearable, with just the right amount of nuanced depression for some added character – perfect for the emo street kid who wants the world to know he doesn’t give a f***.

KAWS UT Collaboration Line, $14.90 to $19.90, available at all Uniqlo stores from 25 April. uniqlo.com.sg

The Facial Mists You Should Be Taking Onto The Plane

Aeroplane skin is the worst. Thanks to the incredibly drying air inside a plane, by the time it’s taxied onto the runway and we’re all ready to disembark and begin our long-awaited holiday, our face has become quite an oil slick. If that doesn’t quite make sense to you, it’s because our skin is driven to produce more oil in response to the extra dry air – and that’s why after a long flight, you feel especially in need of a good shower.
Air travel restrictions on the liquid and aerosols you can have in your carry-on bags might have discouraged you from bringing along your skincare and makeup essentials onto the plane; we completely understand, because we definitely don’t want to have to dispose of a precious bottle of our favourite product at security check. But the guidelines actually state that you’re allowed liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of up to 100ml capacity, and they need to be placed in a transparent, re-sealable bag not exceeding 1 litre in capacity, and only one of these bags is permitted per passenger. That means that we still have quite a number of options for what can be carried on, since there are still a good number of products that fall within a volume of 100ml.
And if there’s one thing that should definitely be in your carry-on bag, it’s a facial mist. Simply because it’s the quickest way to keep your skin hydrated as compared to a regular moisturiser, and is a lot more discreet than a face mask (which might scare your unwitting fellow passengers). We’ve picked out a few facial mists that fall safely within the 100ml category, so pack these along for your next flight out.

Allies Of Skin Molecular Saviour Toner Mist (50ml)

allies of skin

Up-and-coming local skincare brand Allies Of Skin has finally launched two new companions to their much-lauded 1A All-Day Mask, this mist and the 1A Overnight Mask, to form the 24/7 Kit. The alcohol-free formula ensures this toner isn’t at all drying (really the last thing you need on the plane), and has a potent botanical oil blend of damask rose, palmarosa, juniper berry and cucumber seed to calm the skin down, and an anti-bacterial ferment also helps with breakouts. It also doesn’t evaporate, thanks to the pure rose water boosted with a heavier molecular weight, so the skin gets all the calming benefits of the rose water.
$69, alliesofskin.com.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil (100ml)
elizabeth arden

Elizabeth Arden’s most famous product is the multitasking Eight Hour Cream, which is known to be able to soothe almost any kind of skin irritation. And now, it comes in a oil form that you can spritz on! The handy thing about this one is you can use it on your hair and body as well, because it’s obviously not only the skin on your face that gets dry in mid-air. There are plenty of skin-nourishing oils in it, such as Tsubaki oil from the camellia flowers of Jeju Island, grape seed oil, avocado oil, and sunflower seed oil.
$53, Elizabeth Arden counters.

Botáni Australia Soothing Facial Mist (50ml)
botani australia

If you like your beauty products all-natural, Botáni Australia is a Melbourne-based brand that launched here early this year. The key ingredient in all their products is olive squalene, a moisturising ingredient that mimics squalene, the skin’s natural moisturising agent. This toning mist smells of rosewater and chamomile, and is suitable for sensitive skin as well.
$29, loveorganic.com.sg

ETUDE HOUSE Moistfull Collagen Facial Mist (50ml)
etude house

We’re fans of ETUDE HOUSE’s Moistfull Colllagen range, and at the start of this year, they made it even better with the new Aqua Stream Complex ingredient that helps to keep all the moisturising agents you put on your skin flowing continuously within the skin, so the skin stays hydrated for longer. We like the scent of this range too, so we’ll be spraying this mist on as often as we can.
$22.90, ETUDE HOUSE stores.

This Works In Transit Spray-On Moisture (100ml)
in transit

The whole of This Works’ In Transit range is made to soothe skin stressed out by extended time spent on-the-go, and this is the moisture mist that uses plant oils and active ingredients to calm down the skin. It’s so gentle that it’s suitable for sensitive skin and even children and babies, and the organic aloe vera water even helps to treat inflamed skin.
$45, Sephora.

A Review Of Your Grandmother's Favourite Cream – It's Actually Magic

It started with a sunburn.
I don’t tan easily out in the sun – I burn. I’ve heard it’s a common trait amongst the fair-skinned, but considering my consistent sunblock application, getting burnt at all is a rare feat for me. So there I am on the bed, lying in my second day of sunburn agony, when my mum walks in and nearly knocks me out with a little white pot she hurls in my direction.
“Nah, try this. It’s for old ladies but it’s good for sunburns.”

12939342_10153630247627523_257228212_n Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

You definitely recognise this – Hazeline Snow; it’s sat on your mother’s or even grandmother’s shelf of weird drugstore beauty products, seemingly never opened or used, ever. But here’s the weird truth: it works. Mother Dearest left the room and I proceeded to smear the product on my face, and here’s what I discovered:

1. It’s cooling – which is obviously awesome for sunburns
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

First off, the cream is packed hard (like snow, presumably); though digging it out with your fingers reduces it to a more spreadable and powder-like consistency. The minute the white paste hit my face I felt a cooling sensation – even more instantaneous than aloe vera. The formula doesn’t actually contain aloe vera, which everyone knows has natural cooling properties to treat burns, but the snow delivers what its name promises in soothing and reducing the heat. Also, Hazeline has apparently been around since 1892 (my god), and was advertised as being able to “melt” onto your skin to cool sunburns and prickly heat. Rad.

2. It has whitening properties
Part II of being “good for sunburns” is that Hazeline actually whitens your skin, reducing the angry redness of your burn in the process. It might just be a defect of the make of the cream, but applying it to your face leaves a white, powdery residue that takes firm fingers to blend it all in. At first I didn’t realise this and ended up with a white face mask, but on rubbing the snow into my skin it instantly made it brighter, whiter, and smoother – which brings me to my next point:

3. It mattifies!
That sunburn was a few weeks back, but I’ve become slightly addicted to Hazeline Snow since. Our grandmothers sure knew what they were doing – when you rub the cream entirely into your skin it instantly lends your complexion a matte, clean look; as if you’d just gone crazy with your regular powder. For days I’d be able to walk out of the house with only Hazeline and concealer on. Just between us, it felt amazing knowing that I was so close to being completely barefaced and yet still confident enough to leave the house.

4. It works like a pimple cream
It’s a miracle product, that’s what it is, born out of the curiosities of weird, unbranded drugstore beauty. A colleague mentioned that she actually used Hazeline to build over and cover pimples in her nightly routine; and that the redness and swelling would be significantly reduced the next morning. So lucky me, blessed with a stubborn red zit for the last few weeks, decided to try it out. The result? It’s true, which is insane. Just like you would for a regular pimple cream, simply smear the white stuff over the affected area – but this time, don’t rub it in. As the cream can be a little drying after being rubbed into the face (hence the mattifying effect, I presume), it won’t work instantly in drying out the pimple. I caked up a nice white dome over my evil zit and called it a night; the next morning, the pimple was harmless enough that concealer could take care of it.
image4 (2)

So, tried and tested, we’ve found that this grandma-era baby works. How and why we have no idea. A word of caution though – as much as I’m in awe of the multiple makeup-like properties this cream boasts, I wouldn’t recommend anyone add it to their daily makeup routine. The ingredients are explicitly stated to include certain types of acid, like stearic acid, benzoic acid, and other chemicals. Basically, Hazeline cream isn’t natural – but then again neither are its mattifying, whitening, or cooling properties. Nevertheless, it’s been a cult favourite of ladies from generations before us, and there have been no cases of deteriorating skin complaints (yet). For now, it’s still a handy product to have and to use, every once in a while.

Available at… Erm, just ask your mum.

Two Plus One: The Cafe Woodlanders Have Been Waiting For

Hands up, frustrated residents of the Woodlands-Marsiling area. If you’ve ever felt the indignant humiliation of having to defend your Northwest neighbourhood for its lack of any real café to chill at, or grab a luxury cone – well, those days are over.
Two Plus One is your regular artisan waffles-and-ice-cream café – nestled in the heart of the Woodgrove neighbourhood. Anyone who’s ever grown up in Woodlands knows that such an establishment is quite a rare treat; and the décor certainly stands out from the rest of its heartland-y surroundings. I’ve lived in the area since 2001, so naturally I was skeptical. But I went in on a sweltering Sunday afternoon, with an open mind and empty stomach.

12935208_10153627486877523_1193756287_n image4

First impressions certainly do count here; the interior is largely wood-furnished and has the same industrial vibe many cafés and Korean restaurants try to achieve these days – which is pretty impressive for Woodlands. It’s small – you can probably only fit five small groups at one time – but cosy. I can already see myself returning for comfort treats.

image8

SO. A classic waffle ($4.50) and two scoops of ice cream ($3.80 to $4.50 each) does seem a little pricey given the location of the café, but then again, you’ve probably paid more for a dessert another time in your life. One thing’s for sure – the flavours are quirky and don’t disappoint.
The Mocha & Chips ($3.80) went well with the waffle, which was the perfect balance of fluffy and crispy. They also have a more aesthetically pleasing Charcoal Waffle ($6), though the staff herself shared that she prefers the classic. But the star of the meal was hands-down the Thai Milk Tea ice cream ($4.50) – light and impressively similar to real Thai iced milk tea. It had me instantly drawing comparisons to Creamier’s own Thai milk tea ice cream, and I’m proud to say Two Plus One definitely holds its own against this ice cream giant (yay Woodlands!) No wonder it’s the café’s bestseller.

image5 Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Other bestselling flavours include Hazelnut Rocher and Chocolate Rocky Road, though you might have more fun trying some of the more unique flavours like Red Velvet or Crème Brulee. And for the local ice cream connoisseurs, you’ll love the Durian ice cream ($4.50), which tasted more like actual slivers of durian than frozen dairy. That said, their featured flavours do change daily, though you can probably bet on the bestsellers being sold all week-round.
image9

All in all – two previously-ice-cream-deprived thumbs up. It’s a godsend having a chic place that actually serves quality desserts just minutes away from home, and the late opening hours means you can get your late-night pick-me-up with no problem. Located at The Woodgrove, Two Plus One is just a quick ride 912 bus ride away from Causeway Point, if you’re ever in the area. For now, the patrons are mostly expats living nearby (the Singapore American School is a ten-minute walk away) and the occasional slippered heartland teenager. All biases aside, I’ll admit it’s still very much a hidden gem, and pretty inaccessible for anyone who likes to relegate Woodlands to being a “godforsaken ulu land”. But then again, isn’t travelling to the ends of the earth for hipster cafés on-trend right now?

IKEA Stuns Us With Its Most Artistic Collection Yet

Just when you thought the Swedish furniture company’s getting a teensy bit ubiquitous these days… they’re here to rock our world with a stunning collection that’s made for the quirky creative souls out there. Even if you’ve never been a fan of IKEA’s brand of affordable but good-looking furniture — and honestly, how could you not — this collection should get you on board. Sold. And if you, like everyone else, has at least one or two IKEA items in your home, if not your whole house, then get prepared to have your wallets emptied when you troop down to their stores in April.
Well, maybe not that much, because the eye-catching IKEA GILTIG collection somehow remains affordable too, considering that this is a special collaboration with London-based menswear designer, Katie Eary. And if you know her stuff, they’re loud, with crazy colours, and wacky stylings, kinda like the tableware and textiles we have here.

No, seriously, we want everything. Imagine someone coming up to you, obviously impressed by your dinnerware, asking where you’ve got it from because it just looks so luxe and designer, and now, you get to reply with a casual wave of the hand: oh, you know, IKEA. Then, watch their jaws drop.
Every item feels like a rarity, even more so when everything’s put together in a wild riot of prints and patterns. And the styling in the promo shots? Ace. The designer has this to say: “A good home is not about having lots of flashy things, it’s about having things that complement your personality. That way, when you walk into a home, it’s like you’re walking into that person’s brain.”

Now, it’s definitely a departure from the usual clean lines, with a touch of graphic prints, that IKEA is used to. When asked what makes the collection stand out from IKEA’s other stuff, she says, “It turns all the senses up! I’m a print-based designer, so obviously GILTIG was going to be a print-based collection. The idea of creating something amazing on screen and knowing it’s going to look the same when you put it on a product is very appealing to someone like me.”
“Digital print is photo real — 2D-print is just so basic and boring. I want the colour to make the eyes hurt, that’s what I always say,” she adds. True enough, everything screams personality, with lots of digital prints that can add texture and quirkiness to an otherwise bland space.
Best thing is, whatever you’ve seen here, it’s just a preview. There’s way more in store in the coming month, and we’re definitely eyeing the fish lampshades and plates, tablecloth and bed linen… plus a few of the kitten designs that you can just make out in the main banner. It’d be a sure-win for IKEA if they keep this up, and thankfully, we heard that this is just the first in a series of upcoming collaborations with fashion designers. Now, brave the insane crowds, go forth, and get shopping.

The Nail Colours We're Currently Obsessed With

If there’s one thing we’re very guilty of hoarding, it’s nail polish. Brands tempt us with new shade launches all the time, and once they slap a special edition packaging on it, we’re sold. These are the five colours that are currently on rotation on our fingers – if trying them all means changing our manicures every few days, then we say that it’s well worth it.
CHANEL Le Vernis in 522 Monochrome

We first tried out this colour, fresh from the Spring/Summer 2016 makeup launches, at the CHANEL x Pedder On Scotts installation (it’s still on till 3 April!). It’s hard to go wrong with grey nails – it’s immediately chic yet understated, and it won’t clash with any colour you’re wearing. Tip: We’d wear Monochrome alternating with the other neutral shades in Chanel’s latest Le Vernis collection, i.e. 520 Garçonne and 505 Particulière.

Dior Vernis in 327 Precious

We’re not fans of wearing anything too sparkly, but when the sparkle is paired with a relatively muted colour like this bronze, we really like the ensuing subtle glamour. Dior has also added a gel effect to its nail polish formulas, so you get a shinier finish that’s supposed to last longer as well. A colour like Precious is glam enough to be used for a big-night-out manicure, yet its not too much for everyday wear as well.
$38, Dior stores and counters and Sephora.

ETUDE HOUSE Berry Delicious Strawberry Souffle Nails in #5
etude house

Like much of the rest of the Berry Delicious range, the Strawberry Souffle nail polish smells like strawberries (which is nice, but still, try not to inhale too much of the fumes). We’re real suckers for confetti nail polish, and this one has bits of silver, mint and yellow in it, which we’d layer on another pastel base for a super-cute manicure.
$5.90, ETUDE HOUSE stores.

This deep burgundy creme perfectly encapsulates the old-world glamour that the M.A.C x Charlotte Olympia collaboration stands for; the packaging of this one feeds our obsession as well. If you’ve only ever worn classic reds, give burgundy a try – it’s a more unexpected choice that still gives off glamorous vibes.
$26, M.A.C stores and counters from 1 April.

OPI Hello Kitty Cherry Blossom in Dreams Of Spring
opi

Easily our favourite shade from the OPI Hello Kitty range, because it lets us wear pink without having it be too… pink. This creme light lilac is a lot more subdued than the other pinks and reds in the collection, giving off minimalist-chic vibes yet still retaining the essence of spring and cherry blossoms.
$16, selected Watsons and official OPI salons.

Silver & Gold: How You Can Mix Metals Stylishly

Surprise surprise: mixing metals is no longer a fashion faux pas. And how can it be, with so many versatile silver, gold, and rose gold pieces out on the market today just begging to be mixed and matched? That said, we completely empathise if you’re feeling a little less than confident about pairing silver and gold together, so here’s how you can put all your precious jewellery pieces in one look and still mix smart.

1. Incorporate a transition piece

756702.png.scale.314.high        Screen Shot 2016-03-30 at 12.44.50 PM

Clé de Cartier Watch, $11, 100
Swarovski Distinct Bangle, $169

The easiest way to make your first foray into mixing metals is to marry them with a piece of jewellery that already contains both elements. For example, a watch with both rose gold and silver elements helps pull the different metals together in a seamless way, setting uniformity for when you pair other separate pieces like a rose gold chain with a silver bangle. Plus, the transition piece will help to make your mixing look more like a deliberate fashion choice rather than just an unfortunate metal mishap.

2. Start small
TR1979-415-12 TR1980-051-14

L: Thomas Sabo Glam & Soul Ring, $159
R: Thomas Sabo Glam & Soul Eternity Ring, $170 to $234

Stacking midi rings is a straightforward but foolproof way to start dabbling in wearing different coloured metals all at once. They’re striking in a very subtle way, and the delicate slim shapes just mean more leeway for you to mix without looking obnoxious. More popular combinations of course include silver and rose gold, but don’t be afraid to throw pretty yellow-gold bands into the mix for some statement pizazz.

3. Mix in layers
In the same vein of stacking rings, layering the same kind of jewellery in different metals works better than wearing three items in three colours (ie. a silver necklace with a gold bangle and copper-toned rings). Overkill is very possible when mixing metals, so be sure to consider your combinations carefully beforehand. Silver and gold necklaces layered on top of each other actually make a good combo, especially when pulled together with a third non-metal piece – accessories like black cords or beaded chains work like transition pieces too that tie the entire look neatly.

4. Don’t mix styles
Screen Shot 2016-03-30 at 12.49.10 PM Screen Shot 2016-03-30 at 12.50.11 PM

Pandora Flower Pearl Pendant, $195
Pandora Silver Bracelet with Clear Cubic Zirconia, $159

Sounds like a no-brainer, but mixing chunky statement pieces with more delicate ones is an obvious no-no. If you’re going for a classy look, keep your various metals to slim cuffs and minimalist chains. A chunky gold choker with a thin rose gold bracelet just looks off-balance.

5. Choose: Jewellery or hardware
If you’re going to be wearing a statement jacket with a ton of silver zippers, ditch the jewellery. The only time mixing metals becomes a modern faux pas is when you try to get creative with hardware on your clothing or shoes. Mixing metals via your rings is still acceptable most of the time, but matching your bangles to your buckles and insisting on another metal elsewhere is just going to get really confusing. Less is more, folks.

Longer Videos On Instagram: Yay Or Nay?

Instagram, quit playin’ game with our hearts.
It wasn’t too long ago that they announced the new algorithm they’ll be adopting for the platform, which will supposedly show us moments they think we want to see first. That whole debacle caused many brands and Instagram users to lose their shit and flood our feeds with all those “turn on my notifications” posts this week, when in actual fact, the change wasn’t even rolling out yet (Instagram made a statement on Twitter). On the bright side, it probably helped you weed out people whom you don’t want to follow anymore, so that’s a small win right?

But now, Instagram has just announced another new update – they’re extending the amount of time you can record video footage from 15 seconds to 60 seconds. Yes, a whole minute. And guess what, iPhone users? They’re also bringing back the ability to stitch together multiple clips from the videos in your camera roll (sorry Android users, you’ve gotta wait a little longer). FINALLY!
According to Instagram, the amount of time people spend watching videos on the platform has significantly increased by more than 40% over the past six months. With this update, they hope to provide you with the flexibility to tell your stories in more fun and creative ways, which may or may not sit well with some users.
The longer, 60-second video function is being rolled out today and will be made available to everyone in the coming months. In the meantime, you’ll be able to make use of the deeply missed multi-clip video from this week, as part of Instagram for iOS version 7.19 in Apple’s App Store.

A Huge UNIQLO Store Is About To Hit Orchard Road

UNIQLO’s got a coming up in the next few months. They’ve recently launched successful collaborations, like the UNIQLO x Lemaire collection and the recent UNIQLO x Liberty London collection. But just today, they announced that they’ll be setting up their first global flagship store in Singapore and the Southeast Asian region in the third quarter of this year. This new store, situated at Orchard Central, will be modelled after the other UNIQLO flagship stores around the world – like the 12-storey one in Ginza, Tokyo – and will take up 2,700 square metres of space across three floors, making it the largest one in both Singapore and the region.
To make things even more exciting, they’ll continue to expand their family of UT T-shirts. NIGO, UNIQLO’s UT Creative Director, keeps things fresh by carefully curating the collection to feature all sorts of pop art from around the world. For the May and June drops, you can expect new designs from collaborators like Moomin, LEGO, Sanrio and more.

The Face and Body Treatments To Treat Yourself To

Over here at NYLON Singapore, we have the privilege of testing out a variety of facials and spa treatments now and again, in a quest to suss out the best, so we can tell you about it, of course. Here are the three that we enjoyed the most, assessed by factors such as the skill of the therapist, how the products made our skin feel after, and whether we fell asleep during the treatment – a sure sign that it’s sufficiently relaxing.

The Body Shop Green Sanctuary Wild Argan Sensorial Body Treatment
105 mins, $150
If you weren’t aware that The Body Shop had a spa, we didn’t either, before trying this treatment out. It’s a relatively low profile one, hidden in the back of their Paragon store. But go through the door, and you enter a full-fledged spa with an extensive menu of facial and body treatments, all using the brand’s proprietary ranges, of course.
The one we tried made use of the incredibly fragrant Argan Oil body care range, and is inspired by Middle Eastern bath rituals and includes a full body massage (including scalp and hands), a short steam session in their wooden cabins, and a hair treatment that will leave your tresses smelling so good. It’s definitely a fully sensorial experience, and the argan oil will leave your skin deeply nourished as well.

CHANEL Espace Beauté Moisturising Cocoon Face Treatment
60 mins, $150
Who wouldn’t want to try a Chanel facial? This was every bit as luxurious as you’d expect, and it was our therapist’s evident skills that impressed us – Chanel facials never include the use of tools on your skin; only the therapist’s highly-trained hands are allowed to massage and lightly pinch to achieve the desired lifting and firming effects. The main goal of the Moisturising Cocoon treatment is to moisturise and replenish the skin, so many of Chanel Beauty’s hydrating products, such as the Hydra Beauty Micro Serum, were used. Neck, shoulder and hand massages are also part of the treatment, and when experienced in the dim warm lighting of SEVIIN at TANGS, TANGS at Tang Plaza’s luxury beauty services floor, we were soon lulled into an afternoon nap…

d’skin Power Vital Face Lifting Treatment
120 mins, $268
This facial involved the application of a placenta essence in a gel form over the entire face, and it left obvious brightening and lifting effects. This one is d’skin’s signature facial, and we can safely say it was well worth the two hours spent. Besides the placenta, the rest of the facial was made up of the typical steps such as cleansing, exfoliating, and an extraction that was made a lot less unbearable by the skilled hands of the therapist – no metal tools used here – even though we had a lot to extract that day. Extractions can be scary in the hands of someone who’s not as well-trained, but there was no doubt at all we were in very safe hands at d’skin.

How To Get In On The Blush Pink Trend

It’s been on the runway since as early as SS2014, but like all solid, wearable trends, blush pink as a staple colour has taken some time to slowly trickle down into our daily wear out here on the streets. And we couldn’t be happier – for anyone who’s ever felt the pressure to equate office or formal wear with black and white, blush pink is one of the prettiest and easiest ways to return colour to that monochromatic palette of yours. Joining the ranks of grey, deep olive, and navy, the subtle, understated hues of this baby pink add visual interest without being jarring, so you’ll still look sharp and put together.

1. Separates

1769185687_2_5_3 2453782613_2_1_1
L: Bershka, S$25.90
R: Zara, S$109

So, the obvious way to embark on your foray into this pretty trend is to start simple: pair single blush pink pieces with other neutral co-ordinates in your wardrobe – staple pieces you feel comfortable mixing and matching with. Tops are always a safe starter for incorporating new trends and can be easily toned down with jeans or black pants. Or take it up a notch and don a pair of blush trousers, which lend a more feminine air to a regular pantsuit silhouette.

2. Pair with the right colours
Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 12.31.56 PM Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 12.24.24 PM  1478044620_2_5_1
L: Forever21, US$14.90
R: Zara, S$69.90

Even though co-ordinates are the easiest way to experiment, that also makes nailing them a tricky business. Blush pink may be a subtle shade, but there’s no denying that pink is a hard colour to work with no matter what. For foolproof combinations, stick to pairing the pink with black or white – the latter, in particular, will really elevate a clean, crisp daytime look. Naturally, blush pink goes well with other pastel tones, like baby blue, soft lilacs, and occasionally, very muted mints. Other wearable favourites are grey and denim, which add colour in a sophisticated way.

3. Outerwear
1193551622_2_2_3 Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 12.07.05 PM Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 12.06.37 PM

L: Bershka, S$49.90
C: Stradivarius, S$129
R: Stradivarius, S$59.90

You’d be surprised, but blush pink has become quite the hot option for outerwear, especially in London and Europe. We’re talking bomber jackets, dusters, blazers, and full-on heavy-duty coats. While those aren’t necessarily a viable option here, it’s good to keep in mind that layering with a blush pink outerwear not only works aesthetic-wise, but looks and feel breezier too.

4. Accessories

Purses! Skinny scarves! Pumps! But our absolute favourite manifestation of the blush pink accessory has to be sneakers – Superga is in on it, along with a host of top sportswear brands like Adidas (pink Superstars!), Puma and Reebok. And of course, that can only mean scores of high street fashion footwear brands have released their own versions of the blush sneaker. Nike, your move.

5. Overload

Just like how so many people are comfortable wearing all black, blush pink actually works as a monochrome full outfit too. We particularly like the look of pairing matching blush co-ordinates together, and finishing it with a girly pink sneaker for a powerfully elegant twist to the usual sports luxe vibe.

God, colour trends are fun. Looks like russet is coming up next; we’re calling it.

The New Dazzling Cafe Serves Oreo Honey Toast & More

Just when you think the Taiwanese cafe can’t get any hotter, what with their hyped-about stacked toasts and all, they’re about to send us in a frenzy all over again, with a new concept cafe, and second outlet, in Orchard. This time called Dazzling Café Pink, and located at Orchard Gateway, there’s also a new menu of savoury food and desserts to welcome us — but more on that later.
While the first flagship cafe at Capitol Piazza had a mint and pastel theme, and feels idyllic in comparison, this time, there’s a carnival-themed ambience, with the colours pink and black across the walls, tables, and bunny-eared seats.

The outlet will also unveil an interesting dining-and-shopping lifestyle concept, and will carry popular fashion accessory cult brands that will mark their debut here in Singapore. These include Vita Fede, Yun Yun Sun and Vanessa Mooney, which run the gamut of whimsical earrings, fine jewellery to stylish cuffs.
Now, we’ll get to the food. The cafe’s pretty renowned for their desserts, but looking through the savoury section of the menu’s worth it too.
Lobster Risotto (1) Duck Confit Burger Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict
They’re offering an array of brunch-style food, including a Lobster Risotto, Duck Confit Burger, and Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, and if we know anything about their toast, the brioche bun and charcoal bread on which the poached eggs sit atop should be toasted to perfection too.
Matcha Waffle with Azuki Beans Oreo Chocolate Honey Toast Pandan Milk Tea Honey Toast (1)
As for the desserts, if you’re a fan of the matcha honey toast, you’ll love its waffle version — the Matcha Waffle with Azuki Beans, presented in a radial flower pattern for easy access and maximum Instagram potential. Of course, all their desserts look lovely. The towering Oreo Chocolate Honey Toast looks great too, and is bound to have yummy surprises hidden within, while the exclusive Pandan Milk Tea Honey Toast has probably all our favourite flavours stuffed into one, what with salted gula melaka, caramel, milk tea, and honey, topped with a local pandan twist. We can’t wait to head down.
