The Most Sinful Chili Cheese Fries in Singapore

It’s a lethal combination, capable of taking even the mightiest of Goliaths down. Of course, we can only be talking about one thing – chilli cheese fries. The marriage of heart attack-worthy sauces, meat, and thick melted cheese is nothing less than immensely satisfying. But enough of that; we’ll quit the gabbing and cut straight to the round up of the island’s best and greasiest chilli cheese fries – the ones that will have you praying for God to have mercy on your heart after just one bite.

Boufe Boutique Café

An interestingly named café – actually just an amalgamation of the words ‘boutique’ and ‘café’ – Boufe is one of those all-white luxurious dining venues you always see on Instagram but never thought actually existed. Certainly, the café aesthetic is clean, sharp, and 100% on-point, which explains the constant Sunday brunch crowd; but also, boasts a truly terrifying plate of Chilli Cheese Fries ($13) that can clog your arteries just by looking at them. It’s a real sight to behold – so much that the folks at Boufe even filmed a video just for it.

Loof
12669436_10155720611204619_3321440279963195396_n

Here’s something for the local foodie – chili crab cheese fries. The ones at Loof ($14) come topped with Sri Lankan crab, plus an amazing rooftop view of Singapore. Switch out your usual pulled pork or ground beef for stringy crab meat instead, and try to hide your look of surprise when you realise how well it goes as a topping for cheese fries (who knew?) Pair with a sassy margarita and it’s the perfect way to kick off a TGIF.

Potato Head Folk

Very aptly named, the Naughty Fries ($9) at Potato Head Folk are bound to get you in trouble – with your toilet, perhaps. Alright, crassness aside, Potato Head Folk serves up a mean hot beef chilli cheese fries, which many swear rival even the artisan burger mains themselves. It’s a hearty concoction of spiced béarnaise, beef chilli, crisp shallots, parmesan, and sesame seeds, and can only be described as one thing – evil.

Some say you have not lived till you’ve tried Canadian Poutine (a fries dish topped with cheese curds and gravy)… but thankfully this gourmet restaurant located at The Westin has brought Canada straight to us! The Poutine “Eh” ($16) is Canadian chef Aaron’s take on making his home dish more accessible to the masses – so the regular cheese curds on fries gets an extra kick with added pulled pork and Magners cider gravy. It’s best recommended to be enjoyed with a Magners cider, but we say: get a Montreal burger to go with your Poutine, y’know, just to be cute.

Carl’s Jr.
It might not come with the most admirable of marketing messages, but duh we’re throwing this in. You can go as fancy and gourmet as you want, but at the end of the day, everyone comes back to Carl’s Jr. for that quick and easy (and cheap!)($5.90!!) beef chilli cheese fries fix. Come prepared – with tissues, a clean stomach, and mental tenacity – because you know what they say; it’s gonna get messy.

Vans 50th Anniversary Gold Pack

It’s a huge year for Vans. 2016 marks the brand’s 50th anniversary, and they’re going big with their celebrations. Over the past week, Vans has hosted skateboarders, creative individuals, musicians and purveyors of street fashion in their “House of Vans”, an event across 10 cities that commemorated their 50 years of “Off The Wall” heritage in action sports, art, music and street culture. Musicians like Wu-Tang Clan, Jamie XX and Yeasayer took to the stage at night, while fans attended DIY workshops, checked out exhibitions by their local artists and watched a skateboarding competition during the day. As part of its 50-year anniversary, they’ve also released a swanky new Gold Pack Special Edition Footwear and Apparel Collection to commemorate this milestone. This 22-piece collection features iconic silhouettes like the Authentic, Classic Slip-On, Era 59, Old Skool and Sk8-Hi Reissue that are bedecked with gold embellishments. Also, to honour the brand’s design legacy, you’ll see emblems like the checkerboard, the Sidestripe and Duke Kahanamoku’s vintage aloha pattern across the entire collection. Shoes aside, the golden theme continues in the apparel and accessories as well. You can expect pocket tees and tank tops, as well as the 50th Zip Front Fleece, two 50th 6-Panel Snapback, the Old Skool 50th Backpack and the Realm Backpack, that have been dressed up with gold accents.

The Quicker, Fuss-Free Alternative To A Keratin Treatment

If you haven’t tried a keratin treatment for yourself, what you need to know is that it takes spending precious time in a salon chair, but you emerge with your once-frizzy and unruly hair poker straight, and feeling like silk – your fingers can run through your tresses like a dream.
However, you also won’t be able to wash your hair for two to three days after, which is already a pretty big turnoff to us – imagine, in the current heatwave! – but another pretty big downside to a keratin treatment is that many of them contain formaldehyde, also that nasty-smelling chemical that dead lab animals are preserved in. Of course, it’s in a much, much lower concentration when it goes onto your hair, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a harsh chemical with the potential to irritate the skin.
So when Goldwell invited us to try out their new in-salon Kerasilk treatments, with a name like that, we thought we were in for a much longer time in the salon, as well as having to endure only dry shampoo for a few days. We’ve never been happier to be so, so wrong: the Kerasilk Reconstruct Service we tried had us in and out of the Chez Vous salon in one and a half hours, and with zero hair wash restrictions.
The Kerasilk Rescontruct Service is one of five customisable salon treatments launched as part of the new Kerasilk range, which also includes home care products. There’s still a regular keratin treatment with results that last up to five months if you still would like something more permanent, together with other options for volume-boosting, anti-hairloss, and hair colour preservation. Each treatment is supposed to be accompanied by at-home products, meant to maximise the effects of the treatments.

At Chez Vous, the session started off with a hair consultation with the salon’s Chief Director Thomas Teo, whose diagnosis was simple: the problem was limp, lifeless hair that had a high tendency to become a tangled mess especially when wet, and the solution was the nourishing formula of the Kerasilk Reconstruct to rebuild the hair structure from the inside. How is works is that the keratin and Hyaloveil ingredient in the formula go deep into the hair shaft, repairing from the inside so on the outside, hair strands look smooth and healthy again. There’s also an ingredient called the Colour-Caring Silk, to help preserve your dye job at the same time.
A ridiculously relaxing hair wash, a short time under the hair steamer and a nice blow dry later, our hair felt soft as silk, and the tangles felt like a distant memory. There was also a delicious floral scent permeating our locks, courtesy of the treatment’s characteristic fragrance. The effects are supposed to last for up to 10 washes, prolonged with use of the Reconstruct home care range of products, which includes a shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, hair balm, and blow-dry spray.
Sure, it doesn’t last for months like a regular keratin treatment does, but the Goldwell Kerasilk Reconstruct Service is definitely a good shorter-term option if you don’t have the time to sit around for hours, nor the patience to not wash your hair for days. We’ve also found the Goldwell home care products to be of a premium grade, able to convincingly recreate an at-home salon experience (the great fragrance really helps). As long as we’re armed with these, we’re pretty sure no hairstylist will be diagnosing our hair as a tangled mess at our next trip to the salon.

Goldwell Kerasilk products, $40 to $60. Goldwell Kerasilk products and treatments are available at Goldwell salons including Chez Vous, #05-05 Ngee Ann City Podium, and Evolve Salon, #02-09 Liang Court Complex. Head to goldwell.com.sg/salonfinder for a full salon listing. goldwell.com.sg

All The Lip Chubbies You Need

Makeup should be easy, right? Well, in today’s precision-obsessed world of makeup, lip brushes, tiny lip pencils, and finely sculpted lipsticks, we’re taking a step back and heading straight for the simplest of the lot – lip chubbies. Or more commonly known as lip crayons, for their easy twist-up shape that’s both fun and convenient to use. Who knew growing up just meant we’d get to translate our 24-pack set of crayons from paper onto our faces? For now, here are all the top lip chubbies you will ever want and need in your life.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm

The Queen of lip chubbies, Clinique’s Chubby Stick was the unrivaled pioneer of the entire chubby stick trend, and of course remains a top player today. While the original Moisturising Lip Colour Balms might not be the most pigmented – coverage is explicitly stated as sheer for easy, everyday wear – the range of 18 shades definitely makes up for it. And Clinique has heard your concerns and answered! – with the Chubby Stick Intense, which definitely packs a more vibrant punch.

$26, available at Clinique counters and Sephora.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

Another easy favourite of ours has to be the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil by NARS, especially since we’re suckers for smooth, rich mattes. Definitely more of a jumbo crayon than a regular lip liner pencil, this slick little number is creamy and non-drying without compromising on the intense coverage, and stays on even through the greasiest of meals. Fans have sworn that this is both a liner and a lipstick in one, and we dare say we agree. One downside though – no cute twisty feature here; keep your Lip Pencils fresh and sharp with consistent sharpening.

$37, available at Sephora.

Zoeva Lip Crayon

Here’s an affordable option for those who like their lip chubbies lightweight and natural. The Zoeva Lip Crayon comes in four neutral, wearable colours that are perfect for day-to-day looks – or pairing with a killer smokey eye. We particularly like that it’s formulated with natural butters and vitamins for a moisturising feel, which definitely comes through in the comfortable, creamy texture. And have we mentioned it’s under $15?

$12.99, available at Sephora.

Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm

We fold. It’s never nice to pick favourites, but face it – everyone does. So here’s to boldly proclaiming that Revlon has our lips and our souls with their revolutionary chubby balms that aren’t just beautifully pigmented, but are also a total dream to wear, with their velvety textures and minty fresh feel. There’re the Balm Stains, too, if you’re more into sheerer tones, though you might soon be won over by the rich colour payoff in the Matte Balms. And there’s just something so satisfying about owning a pack of ten and being able to pick from them like you would your prized Crayola.

$19.90, available at Watsons, Guardian, and leading supermarkets and hypermarkets.

PUMA Fierce featuring Kylie Jenner

We just can’t get enough of this family, can we? If we’re not reading about Kanye’s endless Twitter rants, we see Kim setting the latest selfie trend (which they’re calling “T-Rex hands”; go figure) or watch Caitlyn shop for lingerie in her reality TV show, I Am Cait. Don’t even get us started on Kendall, who’s appeared on Calvin Klein’s Spring 2016 campaign and last year’s H&M x Balmain campaign. Whatever it is, we all love us some Kardashian/Jenner.
PUMA’s just rolled out its women’s training campaign with the new fitness shoe, the PUMA Fierce, as their main focus. And guess who’s at the centre of it all? Yes, Kylie Jenner. Despite Kanye expressing his displeasure at the seven-figure deal with the brand on Twitter, this entrepreneur, style icon and celebrity has gone on to become the face of PUMA’s new campaign.

Sorry Kanye, we love you and all, but it’s Kylie’s turn to shine.
The PUMA Fierce is both lightweight and laceless, and is designed as a versatile shoe to be worn for training or street-worthy styling. A demi upper bootie construction with technical overlays holds everything together while a supportive midsole and flex grooved outsole allows for quick and dynamic multi-directional movements. But it does look a little like Rihanna’s FENTY trainer, no? ¯\_()_/¯
PUMA Fierce, $169. Available at PUMA and Limited Edt stores from 1 April.

The Great Egg-Venture at Sentosa HarbourFront 2016

Screen Shot 2016-03-24 at 5.12.58 PM

Kicking off this Easter holiday is… an Easter egg hunt of course! And not just any old egg hunt – The Great Egg-Venture calls itself Singapore’s Greatest Egg Hunt; and with over $50,000 worth of prizes to be won, we definitely concede. This year’s egg expedition will feature 60 hand-painted eggs themed “A New Beginning”, lovingly crafted by artists from the Affordable Art Fair, as well as youths from primary schools and other institutions – to share their visions for Singapore in the next 50 years. Being part of the fun is incredibly easy – simply hunt for the 60 giant eggs around Sentosa HarbourFront, snap a selfie, and save it in the Egg Basket, and you’ll be in the running for attractive prizes – the more eggs you find, the more prizes you stand to win.
In addition, there are a ton of Easter-related activities for the whole family to indulge in, including an Easter Carnival (25 & 27 March), Easter Cookie Decorating Workshop (26 March), and a classic Easter Egg Painting Workshop (25 March). We guarantee you’ll never want to see another egg again after this eggstravaganza.

ILLUMI-NATION: A Photo Exhibition
12465962_10153569107334475_6195097725701916127_o

NTU kids show some pride! In collaboration with the Singapore Kindness Movement, ILLUMI-NATION is a heartwarming photo exhibition by Strangers of the Night, a campaign by four students from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information to champion and applaud those who work the often-underappreciated night shift here in Singapore. There’s the trusty taxi uncle standing by to go on-call and pick you up in the dead of night; even the yellow-shirted auntie busing tables at Swee Choon you didn’t give a second thought to when you embarked on your post-Zouk munchies binge. In documenting the stories of 20 workers, ILLUMI-NATION is the visual culmination of their yearlong project to thank the people who toil from dusk to dawn, and keep our nation illuminated 24/7.

Take A Trip In H&M x Coachella Festival Wear

We’re not condoning anything, just, we can’t help the reference when H&M’s campaign images come in looking this on point, specifically hazy days in the desert and a full kaleidoscope of colours, which begs the following two questions: how on earth did they shoot at a place with bright purple vegetation, and where exactly can we get those crochet dresses and tops? Both are easy to answer — the first, Photoshop magic of course, and the second, down at H&M stores from 31 March.

5066_06_sRGB_300 5066_07_sRGB_300 5066_02_sRGB_300

If you need more motivation, know that this campaign also stars Hailey Baldwin, American celebrity and model and it-girl, who just got signed on to IMG Models. Not that we need any convincing to be swayed by this stylish 19-year-old’s fashion choices. Here, she teams up with H&M, who has in turn teamed up with Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, to front #HMLovesCoachella looks that hit the spot with their street-savvy, easy playfulness. This is the second year that the two brands have collaborated so exclusively as well.
5066_04_sRGB_300 5066_03_sRGB_300

It’s a collection that’s all for mixing, not matching, which calls for plenty of print-on-print and personal style. A lot of what you’d expect, but cooler. Of course, there are folksy blouses, beaded and fringed tops, floppy hats and denim shorts, but look closer and the prints, while in the same colour family, are not hundred percent matchy. This means that each piece can be paired with any other, while you can still look put-together at the end — as put-together as frolicking in the desert sounds.
Crochet top - S$19.90Embroidered cropped top - S$14.90  Maxi skirt - S$24.90 Black shorts - S$24.90 Boots - S$79.90

Crochet, stitching details, and bright prints give the clothes and accessories some texture, so your outfit looks way more interesting too. Most of us may not be able to make the trip to one of the biggest indie music festivals out there, but we’ll definitely seize the opportunity to look like we did.

This Is Why Your Blush Doesn't Last

It was over a recent lunchtime conversation that we came to this somewhat upsetting conclusion: Our blush never lasts. We can have the most longwearing foundation, or the most durable lipstick that stays put no matter how many times a day we snack – but somehow, long before the day has come to a close, that light flush we so painstakingly applied on our cheeks has disappeared into oblivion.
If that’s not the case for you, good for you! For the rest of us, we obviously have something to learn, and that fateful conversation was what drove us to finally go figure out what we’ve been doing wrong when it comes to applying blush. Here, we’re sharing what our research has brought to light – and here’s to still having those “naturally” flushed cheeks at the end of the day, no reapplication needed.

#1: You might have been using the wrong formula all this time.

Sure, you love your cream blush for how pigmented and blendable it is, but you find that it seems to be eaten up by your skin in record time. That would make sense if your skin is on the oilier side, since cream formulas do tend to be quickly absorbed by oily skin. So stick to the powders if you have combination to oily skin, especially if you want to keep the shine at bay; gel and stains are good options as well, since these are known to be especially durable on oilier skin.
Try: Guerlain Rose Aux Joues Blush Duo in Smile, $91; Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Le Blush Encre de Peau, $50; Benefit Posietint Cheek & Lip Stain, $54.

#2: You haven’t been layering.

Ok, this was new to us, but apparently one trick to really make cream blush last longer is to apply a layer of powder blush above it. The powder blush has to be in a similar colour, of course, and the important point to remember is cream before powder, and never the other way – putting on the powder blush first will create an uneven base for the cream blush to go on, and cause it to become patchy.

Try: ETUDE HOUSE Berry Delicious Cream Blusher in #1, $15.90; M.A.C Flamingo Park Powder Blush in Spring Flock, $39.

#3: You’re not setting your makeup.

Why not??? It really is the key to getting your makeup to stay put in general, and especially necessary in our climate. We recommend first buffing translucent loose powder over your entire face (especially over your blush, in this case), and following up with a setting spray. Both steps combined will seriously extend the longevity of your blush, and makeup in general.
Try: MAKE UP FOR EVER Super Matte Loose Powder, $49; CHANEL Le Blanc UV Protection Whitening Loose Powder SPF50/PA+++, $82; Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, $48.

#4. You’re not using primer.

Another step you definitely shouldn’t be skipping. Primer is another big factor in getting makeup to stay, by providing a smoother base for makeup to adhere to. Apply primer with your fingers over the entire face, to ensure your makeup goes on evenly on all areas. A second big reason to always apply primer: many of them now come with skincare benefits as well.
Try: Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Mineral Primer, $84; Dr. Young Pore Eraser Balm, $40.90.

Hello Techy

Sanrio has this ability to make just about anything look desirable, even something as dull as a tablet. Just slap on some Hello Kitty graphics and it’ll sell like hotcakes (there’s even a Hello Kitty Run that takes place annually at the end of the year). But it’s not surprising, seeing how this little anthropomorphic cat has won the hearts of many around the world. We aiM for Pride (WMP), a brand of Hong Kong-based E-Huge Technology Limited that specialises in producing affordable innovative products for a wide range of target audiences, has recently released a Sanrio-themed tablet, the first in their Character Series. It also marks E-Huge Technology Limited’s first device launch in Singapore. The 10.1-inch tablet comes with a pastel pink Hello Kitty Pigo keyboard, which doubles up as a cover and a stand for the device. Apart from being an attractive piece of technology for Hello Kitty fans of all ages, it’s quite the companion if you decide to get some work done on it. It’s powered by the Intel® Atom™ Z3735F processor, a 2GB DDR RAM and runs on Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10. It even has a micro USB port and a microSD slot for additional memory space; definitely useful if you have large-sized files that you don’t want to store on the tablet itself. Also, what would a Hello Kitty-themed device be without a series of limited edition Hello Kitty wallpapers made specially for the tablet, along with unique Hello Kitty desktop icons?

A Hearty Round-Up of All The Korean Snacks To Satisfy Your Kraving

We’ve already been swept away by the rush of K-pop, K-dramas, and the ombré lips and cushion compacts of K-beauty, but hallyu, or the Korean wave, just refuses to halt its crazy momentum. So, take South Korea’s best culinary exports – homegrown cafes and restaurants who’ve since sprung up here, or their traditional, authentic flavours – and combine that with our foodie nation; what you’ll get is a whole array of exciting options, such as churros, chicken wings, shaved ice and ice cream, all with an innovative Korean twist. Here’s a list of the most hyped ones in town, and rest assured, we won’t be waving goodbye to any of these soon.
By Amelia Tan and Amanda Chai

CHURROS
You might say that these are, technically, a Spanish delicacy, but there must be a good reason for the long queues outside these made-in-Korea specialty stores. Why the hype for a simple fried dough snack? Well, the humble churro, crispy on the outside, fluffy and warm on the inside, now gets a sweet makeover – with inventive dips, and occasionally stuffed with chocolate or cream cheese, so you’ll feel mighty chuffed after.

Churro101
CHURRO101-3
WHO
Take a trip to South Korea, and you might spot the entire Girls Generation troop down to a similar outlet in Seoul – that’s how popular the chain outlet is, and food-crazy Singaporeans got the privilege of Churro101’s first overseas outlet last October. By all accounts, their churros passed the bite test, especially delightful when served warm. All the ingredients are imported from Korea, while the dough’s made fresh on-site daily, piped and fried upon order, so you get that gleaming golden exterior.
TRY
The Filled Churros deserve a mention – the Dark Chocolate ones ($5.40), both filled with and coated in luscious dark chocolate, are wildly popular here, while the Cream Cheese churros ($4.50) are a hit in Korea. You can also spring for a churro set that comes with soft-serve ice-cream and coffee.
Location: Bugis+, #04-01; 313@Somerset, #B3-49
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm, Mon – Sun

Mr. Churro

WHO
Sometimes, size does matter, and if so, this should do: 50cm-long churros that will add the “wow” factor to your Instagram feed. You’ll find that at Mr. Churro, another Korean import that serves the bite-sized snacks long and curled. The original ones are dusted with sugar and cinnamon, just the right amount, while other over-the-top versions include churros paired with ice-cream, happily arranged like a jubilant stick figure.
TRY
The Original Churro ($4.50) for its showmanship, to which you can add milk chocolate or milk custard dips. Go for the ice cream ones ($6.50) as well, as the smooth, milky texture of the cold dessert perfectly complements the crispy dough – there’s even banana milk-flavoured ice-cream to appease the same people who go on crazy shopping sprees at Korean minimarts.
Location: ION Orchard, #B4-61
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm, Mon – Sun
More information at facebook.com/MrChurroSG.

BINGSU
These desserts may be served ice-cold, but their popularity’s like wildfire – just witness how many bingsu cafes have popped up recently all over sunny Singapore. What makes this different from the typical kopitiam ice kachang is that the ice shavings are super fine, kinda how a snowflake feels on your tongue, while they’re topped with condensed milk and all sorts of interesting ingredients, everything from ice-cream and fruits to mochi and brownies. Oh, and they only come in XL portions, great for sharing!

Oh my! That’s the reaction that the trendy cafe wishes you’d exclaim after dipping your spoon into one of their finely-shaved, fluffy milk flakes. It’s also how you pronounce their catchy name. While affiliated with Korean dessert brand Wicked Snow, we’d say that the store has had its own success, judging from the patrons in line, and that’s because their bingsu bases are created purely from premium milk – it’s not ice, but fresh milk ice that you can’t stop scooping up.
TRY
You can’t go wrong with Oreos, so the Choco Brownie Bingsu ($18.90) is a safe choice for those who like their shaved ice with chocolate ice-cream, generous cookie crumbles, and actual brownie squares, which makes for a towering sight. For a more Asian palette, try the Green Tea Bingsu ($13.90) that combines matcha powder and red bean, along with matcha ice-cream and nuts to up the crunch factor.

Location: 313@Somerset, #04-20/32; Marina Square, #04-102
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 10pm, Mon – Sun; 11.30am – 12am, Fri & Sat at 313@Somerset

Caffebene
IMG_7999
WHO
Avid K-drama lovers would know that famous “milk foam” kiss scene in Secret Garden, and yep, they’d know that it was filmed under a now-iconic clock in one of the Caffebene outlets in Korea. Well, every outlet has one, including its first outlet here. The cafe opened to much fanfare, especially since the brand’s such a household name, kind of like the Starbucks of South Korea. They’re all about the authentic experience too – every part of the cafe, from the European styling to the menu made from ingredients directly imported from Korea reflect a consistent image: a family-friendly hangout that serves good, quality food and drinks.
TRY
C’mon, bingsu can’t really be healthy, can it? We beg to differ. Caffebene offers a Pat Bingsu ($13.90), with mizugaru, a healthy multi-grain Korean drink that’s high in protein – this one contains barley, black soya bean, brown rice, black rice and black sesame, and is sweet and tasty without being cloying. Other favourites include the Strawberry Bingsu ($15.90) and Green Tea Tower Bingsu ($15.90). Though not in this category, we’d recommend the Garlic & Cheese Bread ($13.90) too, for a crispy honey-drenched toast with rich savoury cheese.
Location: VivoCity, #02-150
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm, Mon – Sun

Banana Tree

WHO
If you like all things dainty and quaint, then don’t ever go here – we’re not sure you’ll want to leave once you step into this pretty cafe. Originally from Seoul, the cafe has made a name for itself thanks to a range of too-gorgeous-to-eat desserts that you’d want rather show off on a windowsill. That’s because they come in flower pots, how cute is that, and there’s even a latte topped with cotton candy like a rainbow unicorn’s daydream.
TRY
We bet you’ll take about a 100 pictures of this before settling your spoon into the snowy shaved ice. The Red Bean Pot Bing Su ($14.50) looks stunning in a huge flower pot, and comes topped with sea salt malt ice-cream, almonds and red bean paste, basically a mix of traditional Korean flavours. Other than that, the best-selling Flower Pot Pudding ($6.50), fresh cream covered with Oreo “soil”, is a good option too. Go ahead, share it with a couple of your friends, though please don’t fight over who gets first dibs on Instagram.

Location: 26 Keong Saik Road
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm, Tues – Sat; 12pm – 7pm, Sun; closed on Mon

Seorae

WHO
While more a Korean BBQ joint, known for their offering of galmaegisal, or premium pork skirt meat, since its first establishment in South Korea in 2007, we think their desserts are worth talking about too. The meat cuts are said to be reserved only for the royal family in the past, and yep, we do feel a bit more royal when we were served these larger-than-life desserts – they’re as piled-on and crazy-fabulous as they look in the pictures. Truth be told, we were spoilt for choice, and stuck at the menu for more than a while.
TRY
The Bibim Patbingsoo ($12.90) is a pretty choice and looks just like the savoury main course, just that the elements are made with fruits, jelly, and peach and whipped cream to simulate an egg. The Gangnam Patbingsoo ($9.90) will delight those who like crunchy, sweet popcorn, great especially with the soft ice shavings. At the same time, the Sinsa Patbingsoo ($14.90) tops the table for presentation – the traditional red beans and condensed milk come atop an actual honeydew bowl.
Location: Plaza Singapura, #02-01
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 10pm, Sun – Thurs; 11.30am – 11pm, Fri – Sat

Nunsongyee

WHO
It’s not the newest kid on the block, but it consistently tops foodie lists – now, there’s a 24-hour outlet, so you can have your sweet fix any time of. The cafe was first set up by Miss Eun Jin, a Korean #girlboss who arguably brought the first offerings of bingsu here, and this third outlet is housed in an impressive three-storey shophouse, complete with authentic touches of the hip Hongdae streets in Seoul; think wood furnishings, K-pop blasting at every floor, and a majestic installation that has shaved ice falling like snow from the ceiling – way to let their “USP” shine.
TRY
Naturally, the cafe takes pride in their traditional picks, which include the Injeolmi Bingsu ($14.90), made with sweet rice cakes and soybean powder, Pat Bingsu ($12.90) and Black Sesame Bingsu ($18.90), all perfectly balanced treats. Still, we went for the most photogenic Choco-Banana Bingsu ($13.90), a can’t-go-wrong marriage of banana slices and chocolate powder. Despite the punchy flavours, we’re glad that the star of the dish, the fluffy shaved milk, is still the part we’re raving about the most – and the one that will have us coming back for more.
Location: 534 North Bridge Road
Opening Hours: 24 hours, Mon – Sun

Chick And Ken

WHO
Get ready to whip out your phones, and this time, you’re looking to Snapchat, not Instagram, everything. Opened by the same people who run Stateland Cafe and Honey Comb, they offer fried chicken alongside shaved iced desserts, and while not really from Korea, they’ve imported the whole novelty aspect of Korean food – that’s right, your favourite dessert now comes armed with syringes, a sight so unique that it’s bound to be your main squeeze sooner or later.
TRY
For a fresh take on the famed watermelon soju, try the Watermelon and Strawberry Bingsu ($13.90), with fresh watermelon cubes, watermelon glace, strawberry slices and mint jelly. Or, for a truly innovative choice, go for the Thai-inspired Cha Yen Bingsu ($12.90) with homemade red rubies, Thai tea jelly, honeyed cornflakes, and the distinct taste of Thai milk tea with every mouthful.

Ice Lab Cafe

WHO
It’s a sight you won’t miss while walking from Somerset MRT towards Orchard Road’s main stretch, as the cafe’s brilliantly-lit interior stands out like polar bears on a tropical island. Those snow-white bears seem to be a trademark here, a first overseas venture for Korean comedian Shin Jung-Hwan, and they promote the cafe’s signature bingsus made from machines that are able to create six different flavours, each with its own proportion of flavours so you only get the best. Who needs to travel when your Winter Wonderland’s right around the corner?
TRY
Like snowflakes, claims the brand of their shaved ice, and true enough, their bingsu live up to the title. The Brownie Bingsoo ($18.30 for Small) will be wiped out in seconds, only because the luxurious dessert is topped with Ghiradelli chocolate, brownie squares and chocolate ice-cream. It’s a little on the pricey side, but hey, brownie points for presentation.

Location: 321 Orchard Road
Opening Hours: 10am – 1am, Mon – Sun

SOFT SERVE
Soft serve might seem like quite the peasant’s dessert fare, but trust the Koreans to elevate it to an exciting novelty sweet – that sits great both on the taste buds, and your Instagram feed. Milky without being sour, it’s a treat for the heat that’s quickly becoming a staple in Singaporean snacking. Particularly, the trend seems to be to go big on unconventional savoury toppings, which go surprisingly well with the variety of sweet sauces. Dare we say it; it’s like froyo, but better.

Milkcow

WHO
The mecca of all soft serve ice creams, that’s who. Boasting an impressive 14-flavour menu, it’s been a good two years since Milkcow first arrived on our shores, and the slew of new additions to the menu says that they’re not going anywhere. So named for their organically milky taste, Milkcow’s soft serve dairy contents are sourced straight from Italian farms, for that smooth and creamy gelato texture that’s sure to leave you craving more for a long time after.
TRY
Rejoice! The folks over at Milkcow have combined two of Korea’s top snacks to bring you the Milky Churros ($6.90), the latest addition to their ever-expanding menu. A sumptuously coated dark chocolate churro adds doughy depth to the signature Original Milky Way ($4.90) ice cream, and is by far our favourite of all the toppings. Well, for now.

Location: Bugis Junction, #B1-K3; The Cathay, #01-03; Velocity @ Novena Square, #01-19
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 10pm, Sun – Thurs; 11.30am – 10.30pm, Fri & Sat

Sweet Monster

WHO
The newest player in the soft serve ice cream game, Sweet Monster is easily credited with being the original Korean creator of Popcorn Ice Cream. It’s a glorious rags-to-riches story; the 26 outlet-strong franchise across Asia is hardly telling of Sweet Monster’s early beginnings as just a presence amongst food trucks in Korea. We came for the signature gourmet popcorn – made with non-GMO corn and popped by air in Korea! – but stayed for the soft serve – 75% milk and so delectably creamy it easily outshines the popcorn.
TRY
The Cheese-Caramel Mix Popcorn Ice Cream ($6.80), duh. It’s the quickest and most enjoyable way to get a first taste of what Sweet Monster’s all about, and delivers a powerful savoury-sweet punch in just one bite. Otherwise, you can choose from the other Popcorn flavours – like Chocolate, Milk, and Strawberry – and soon to come, a new entry enticingly named “Jeju Tangerine”.

Location: Plaza Singapura, #B2-49; Bugis Junction, #M01-K1
Opening Hours: 10.30am – 10.30pm, Mon – Sun

KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN
There are few things in life as pleasurable as a hearty fried chicken meal; Korean fried chicken, incredibly, tops that. “Korean style” here goes way past just flavourful sauces and marinades – the key difference is frying the chicken twice, and seasoning both before and after. The result? Extra crunchy chicken skin without the grease, laying perfect foundation for the sauce that’s then carefully painted on by hand. While we have frontrunners 4 Fingers and Kko Kko Nara to thank for first bringing us Korean fried chicken, new and original chicken restaurants are springing up everyday. 2016 marks the sixth year ‘KFC’ has been on the island, and frankly, we can’t imagine a better time to be alive.

OPPA Chicken

WHO
A humble establishment that only opened last September, OPPA Chicken is a funky café-restaurant taking pride in their authentic recipes and eclectic brand image. It may have been started by a Singaporean, but OPPA’s dishes promise the same vivacious kick of flavour you’d get at any café in Korea. In fact, head chef and co-founder Debbie Wu personally went into the boiling kitchens of Korea to learn the recipes and bring them back to Singapore. It took blood, sweat, and tears – literally, getting scalded by 190-degree oil to deep-fry chicken the way the Koreans do it – but well worth the effort, to bring back a real piece of Korean culture for keeps. Now that’s dedication.
TRY
The Honey Garlic Chicken ($13.90 for 6pcs), lightly sautéed in garlic and honey caramel glaze, and unique entirely to OPPA. You’ll be pleased to know that all the sauces are done single-handedly by Debbie herself, to ensure consistent quality as she was the only one who learnt the recipes straight from the head chef in Korea. And if you love a good spicy dish, try the tangy-sweet Flaming Yangnyum Chicken ($13.90 for 6pcs), or the chewy OPPA-Topokki rice cakes ($6.90), which come in three levels of spiciness for you to test your tolerance – be warned, Level 3 is not for the faint-hearted.
Location: 274 South Bridge Road, Singapore 058823
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm, Mon – Sat

Twins Korean Restaurant

WHO
A down-to-earth Korean restaurant helmed by identical Korean twin chefs born three minutes apart – who happen to be quite the lookers too. Complete with the cosy industrial-themed woodwork of typical Korean cafes, it’s a welcome addition to the hip (and tasty) neighbourhood of Tanjong Pagar.
TRY
Definitely snag an order of the Soy and Garlic Chicken ($20 for Half/$35 for Full), which look daunting, but whose crispy marinated skin will leave you wondering incredulously how you finished it all so fast. And something a little less common at other Korean restaurants on the island – Woojae’s Spicy Seafood Crab Noodle Soup ($13.90 for Lunch/$16.90 for Dinner), an explosive red Korean-Chinese broth, named after Twin #1. Or was it Twin #2?
Location: 7 Craig Road, Singapore 089667
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 3pm, 5.30pm – 12mn, Mon – Sat; 5.30pm – 11pm (Sun)

The Most Important Makeup Step and What You've Been Forgetting All This Time

First off, okay, we lied. Sunscreen isn’t exactly makeup, per se, but it sure is the most important step in the prelude to your makeup routine. You’ve probably heard it all from your mom already – neglect daily sunscreen and you’ll fall victim to dark spots and aged skin before you’ve even hit 40.
But just how serious are the sun’s ultraviolet rays anyway? Surely occasional application, only when the sun is really beating down, should be enough to see you and your skin through to the Golden Years? We’re calling bullshit on this one – a single afternoon researching on the chemical technicalities behind UV rays and SPF has got us sufficiently scarred to be slathering it on every day onwards for the rest of our lives.

via GIPHY

For starters, turns out that even when we do use sunscreen pretty regularly, it’s not even targeting the most harmful of UV rays. Ultraviolet radiation reaches our earth (and skin!) most prominently in two wavelengths – UV-A and UV-B. Unfortunately, most sunblocks and sunscreens are only able to target UV-B rays, which are the primary cause of sunburns in the first place. So the good news is that constant application means fewer sunburns; but unless you’re using heavy-duty sunblock, you’re not getting complete protection from UV-A rays, which cause age spots, wrinkling, and (oh shit) skin cancer. And that’s what most of us are missing out.
So the thing is, when people talk about the “negative consequences” of sun exposure, it doesn’t just end at a bad sunburn. In fact, just like traffic signs on the road, the redness of your sunburn is only a warning signal to impending danger. UV radiation damages DNA enzymes in your skin, causing weird syntheses of proteins that dilate blood vessels and cause inflammation of cells – which is what we perceive as the redness, swelling, and pain. But because it takes four to six hours for all of this to happen beneath the surface, by the time the sunburn starts to show your skin has already been well and truly exposed to the harmful rays. All isn’t lost though – just take the cautionary red as a grim warning against age spots and skin cancer, be more diligent with the sunscreen application, and swerve right past that nasty outcome.

via GIPHY

And so, the solution for those harmful UV-A rays? A sunscreen that’s specifically labeled to offer broad-spectrum protection – which means it blocks both UV-A and UV-B rays. Traditionally, only sunblock contained the right kind of chemicals to be highly effective against UV-A and UV-B rays, but here’s the catch – it appears white on the skin, and remains that way even after rubbing it in. Not exactly the most practical as a base layer. But these days, we have the makeup and vanity gods to thank for inventing micronizing techniques that break down the particles so they’re invisible without compromising functionality.

#1: Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Water-Light Lotion For Face & Body, $55
#2: Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30, US$11.49
#3: L’Oreal Advance Suncare Clear Cool Lotion SPF 50+, US$10.99
#4: Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh Invisible Cooling Sun Spray 30 High, £7.99

We’ve included just a few nifty options that’ll help with battling the rays, but won’t break the bank or your makeup routine. Spray-on sunscreen is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its ease of application (oh the wonders of a lazy homosapien), and it isn’t that impossible to find one with UV-A protection too. Don’t forget to pick a sunscreen that’s water-resistant too; it will keep the sweat from bumbling around Singapore from “washing” the sunscreen away. With all that in mind, here’s hoping your skin will look ten times better before you even slap on that foundation – 40 years down the road.

Old Is Gold: Your Favourite 90s Beauty Products Then And Now

Time to do a #throwback – for all the 90s kids out there, these are the products that you’ll probably remember using back then. We get nostalgic and look at the most iconic beauty items of the decade, and how they’ve grown up together with us.

CLEAN & CLEAR FOAMING FACIAL WASH
Then: This was probably the first-ever cleanser you used (it was for us), and this small, no-frills bottle was everything your teenage skin needed, provided you didn’t have any acne woes. The clear scented gel performed the straightforward task of cleansing the skin of grime without stripping it of too much moisture; and more importantly, was within our shoestring teenage budgets.
Now: Clean & Clear definitely grew up with us, with a logo redesign in 2009 that unveiled more modern typography and colours on both the logo and packaging. Our trusty old cleanser still exists – there’s still the familiar orange and purple colour combination on the bottle, and the product itself feels and smells the same. It’s probably no longer sufficient for our skincare needs at this age, but it’s still nice to get a bit nostalgic as we browse the drugstore shelves.
Clean & Clear Foaming Facial Wash, $4.10. Available at Watsons and Guardian. cleanandclear.com

MAYBELLINE GREAT LASH
Then: Practically every girl in the 90s had the immediately-recognisable pink and green tube in their makeup pouch. The Great Lash mascara was actually first launched in 1971, but the 90s was really the time when pro makeup artists couldn’t stop raving about its ability to really make lashes “great”, getting this ubiquitous little tube all over the glossy magazines and into the stashes of teenage girls everywhere – being a drugstore brand, Maybelline was extremely accessible, after all.
Now: The Great Lash line has gotten multiple temporary additions through the years, including a clear version that also doubles up as a brow gel, and coloured variations. Unfortunately, it’s not available on local shelves – but don’t fret: Maybelline Singapore already has a large array of mascaras to choose from, easily available in drugstores. The product that’s the most similar to Great Lash would be the Lashionista, another Maybelline cult favourite for its super-lengthening abilities. But if you really, really need your Great Lash fix, the range is still stocked in the US.
Maybelline Lashionista, $22.90. Available at Watsons and Guardian. maybelline.com.sg

THE BODY SHOP PERFUME OIL
Then: Before we could afford the luxury of an eau de parfum, The Body Shop’s Perfume Oil was what we turned to to keep our teenage selves smelling fresh. We were partial to the fruity scents like Fuzzy Peach and Dewberry, and a few debs on the wrists and neck were enough to make us feel all grown up.
Now: The Body Shop is honestly not the first brand we’d turn to when we’re looking for a new fragrance, but they still do make a pretty impressive range of fragrances, whether in oil, eau de parfum or eau de toilette form, spanning everything from musky to fruity. If you want a dose of nostalgia but in the form of a more mature scent, try the new perfume oils such as the Red Musk Perfume Oil.
The Body Shop Red Musk Perfume Oil, $45.90. Available at The Body Shop stores. thebodyshop.com.sg

CALVIN KLEIN CK ONE
Then: It was one of the advertising campaigns that defined the decade, and firmly cemented the fragrance’s place in pop culture history. The CK One campaigns of the 90s featured black and white photographs of a bevy of unaffected male and female models slouching around, led by a young Kate Moss, then the epitome of “heroin chic”. The unisex fragrance was made to be painfully cool, from the deliberately minimal packaging to the fresh citrus notes. No wonder this was one of the first perfumes we lusted over.
Now: Through the years, Calvin Klein has released numerous limited edition spins on the CK One, such as the CK One Electric, and CK One Summer. But the original CK One still exists, just with a slight update to the packaging – the modernisation of the CK logo, so that it’s now all sleekly sans serif. Just this year, Calvin Klein released the CK2, also a unisex scent made for this generation. In the 21st century, “cool” now smells like notes of wasabi, mandarin, and sandalwood.
Calvin Klein CK2 Eau de Toilette, $60 to $106. Available at Sephora and major departmental stores. calvinklein.com

CHANEL LE VERNIS IN VAMP
Then: When Chanel launched this particular shade in 1994, Uma Thurman was seen wearing it in her role as Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction, released the same year. This made the nail polish even more of a bestseller than it already was, and it became one of Chanel’s most iconic pieces of makeup. Vamp is a dark berry mixed in with subtle glitter, for a boldly glamorous manicure – then, it was considered to be the first time such a dark colour had been catapulted into the mainstream, so it was seen as a tremendously exciting beauty trend to try.
Now: Many insist that Vamp went out of fashion sometime around 2000; and the Vamp of this century would be the Rouge Noir. The interesting thing is, Rouge Noir made its first appearance before Vamp – the former in Chanel’s Autumn/Winter 1994 show, the latter in Spring/Summer 1995 – but this dark berry comes without the glitter, making it more evergreen when it comes to trendiness. Till today, Rouge Noir remains as the brand’s most iconic nail polish shade, even prompting an entire makeup collection inspired by it for Holiday 2015.
CHANEL Le Vernis in 18 Rouge Noir, $39. Available at CHANEL Beauty stores and counters. chanel.com/en_sg

CLAIROL HERBAL ESSENCES
Then: One of the defining smells of the decade had to be the scent of hair washed with Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner. The iconic bottle with the dark green cap promised a real shower experience smelling of a field of the most fragrant flowers, or the juiciest and sweetest fruits.
Now: Somewhere along the way, the Herbal Essences range became unrecognisable. Gone were the clear bottles revealing the inviting coloured shampoo gel inside; in their place were groovy neon colours and a complete logo change, with unfamiliar product ranges with names like Dangerously Straight, Hello Hydration and Long Term Relationship. These revamped products still smell pretty sweet, but can’t really compare to the originals. Thankfully, Clairol brought back a very limited selection of the old range, complete with the familiar, nostalgic packaging. We’ll take what we can get.
Clairol Herbal Essences Shampoo & Conditioner, $7.65 to $7.70. Available at Watsons and Guardian. herbalessences.com

REVLON COLORSTAY LIPSTICK
Then: Brown lipstick is a beauty trend that is widely associated with the nineties, and at that time, many women were rocking a brown lip courtesy of Revlon’s ColorStay Lipstick. The ColorStay makeup range was first introduced then, and went on to become one of the most popular longwearing makeup, made extra accessible by the drugstore prices.
Now: Today, the ColorStay range is still a cornerstone of Revlon makeup. As beauty trends evolve and consumer demands become more sophisticated, the ColorStay lip products have also multiplied into a variety of modern options, such as a glossy stain. For a matte take on the original lipstick, try the ColorStay Ultimate Suede, or the ColorStay Moisture Stain if you prefer the lightweight liquid formula that seems to be so trendy these days.
Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick and ColorStay Moisture Stain, $20.90 each. Available at Watsons and Guardian. revlon.com

CLINIQUE ALMOST LIPSTICK IN BLACK HONEY
Then: The name “Black Honey” brings to mind an intense, intoxicating colour that makes a good bold lip, but in fact, Clinique’s most popular Almost Lipstick shade was a sheer and light gloss that appeared beige on the lips. Upon its launch in 1989, it went on to become a lip colour staple for teens trying out their first-ever lipstick, to full-grown women and even celebrities during their red carpet appearances.
Now: Black Honey is still sold today, but if you want an update, Clinique has plenty of other lip colour offerings that get you the same effect. There’s the Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Whole Lotta Honey in a handy crayon form, or the Clinique Pop in Bare Pop, which is conveniently a lipstick and primer in one, so you’ll never have patchy, chapped lips.
Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm, $26; and Clinique Pop, $33. Available at Clinique counters and Sephora. clinique.com.sg

The Best Starter Palettes For Eyeshadow Newbies

Everyone has to start somewhere; my first venture into the daunting world of eyeshadows was with a cheap blue-toned four-colour palette from L’Oreal – perfect for secondary school choir performance makeup, but not exactly a go-to everyday look. That said, the palette did come with your basic white/nude shimmer, which I quickly grew fond of and smeared on my eyelids whenever I was feeling ~fancy~ for the day. I lived on that same palette for six years (who really wears makeup in JC anyway?), but fast-forward to today and I’m now armed with a socially acceptable number of basic eye palettes and even a few dandy brushes. Not bad for my makeup-wary self, but still, I wish someone had properly inducted me into this palette play back when I was first trying out makeup – because a quality, versatile palette can really take you places. In fact, if I could go back in time and tell little ol’ bespectacled me what to invest in (and if these palettes even existed back then), here’s the shopping list I would bring:

For your basic, everyday paletteTartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette, $69

This is the stuff of dreams, eyeshadow newbie or not. The range of tones is undeniably all-inclusive, taking you from light creams for your base (to smoothen out and fix discolouration on your lids), to warm browns perfect for an everyday look, to rich, chocolatey shades if you’re ever in the mood to be daring. Plus, the shadows are all matte, which are definitely a safer option for a cautious first foray into eyeshadow. We’re going to go ahead of ourselves and say that if we had to live with only one palette for the rest of our lives, this would be it.

Available at Sephora.

For a rose-gold alternative: Urban Decay Naked3, $83

What’s an eyeshadow list without Naked? If you think peachy, rose-gold shades sit better on your skin tone, it’s completely fine to give the neutral browns a miss and take up this pretty palette instead. Like any other versatile palette, the Naked3 too comes with an easy to work with light-to-dark gradient and transitional hues, so you can build and blend with confidence. We particularly
like ‘Burnout’ – third from the left – a bolder, slightly orange-toned colour that’s not only trendy this season, but also a little different from the usual light mauves.

Available at Sephora.sg

For your starter smokey eye: Sephora Collection Colourful 5 Eyeshadow Palette, $36

Just because you’re only starting out in the eyeshadow territory doesn’t mean the classic smokey eye is off-limits. In fact, I actually felt the smokey eye was easier to achieve than a natural daytime look – partly because I had already been accustomed to using extreme colours onstage; and because it’s harder to mess up darker, monochromatic shades than trying to get a seamless blend of browns – which can sometimes end up looking like you just have really dirty eyelids. And five shades is really all you need – just be sure to layer slowly from light to dark and blend generously. And if all else fails, shimmer the heck out of your eyelids.

Available at Sephora.sg

For a bronzy smokey eye: Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Collection, US$49

This one’s for the ladies who’ve gotten a little more intermediate at colour understanding and blending – and those with a permanent sweet tooth. Attempt a standout everyday look with the more uniquely-hued browns in this palette – a lovechild of the neutral brown eye and the smokey eye. The mix of mattes and shimmers makes for more options, if you’re ever looking to switch it up, and we do appreciate the inclusion of more daring, fun shades like the shimmery olive and glittery grape.

Available at Sephora.

For… those on a budget: e.l.f. Flawless Eyeshadow, US$2

Who am I kidding; at 14 I was probably dead broke anyway, so what better palette to splash out on than one that costs less than a plate of chicken rice? This palette is near and dear to my own heart for its straightforward simplicity – one predetermined shade for each purpose, and even explicitly labelled because e.l.f. probably realised it would help complete eyeshadow dummies. And don’t be fooled by the price – the shades are surprisingly pigmented and go on smoothly over your lids, adding a pop of natural colour perfect for a regular day in the office or just sweating it out around the island. Keep your eyes peeled for the occasional Watsons pop-ups in shopping mall atriums, which are your best bet to get your hands on this New York-based brand.

Why Sheep Sebum Might Be Good For Your Skin

It all started from a humble South Australian sheep – this fluffy creature was where Kirsten Carriol got the inspiration to start her beauty brand Lano, made up of a compact collection of skincare products that derive their highly moisturising properties from – you guessed it – the stuff that excretes from sheep’s pores.
We don’t blame you if you’re feeling a bit grossed out by the idea of smearing sheep skin excretions on your face, but stay with us on this. The lanolin that Carriol uses in her products is of an ultra-pure medical grade, untainted by non-natural substances like genetically-modified foods and pesticides in the sheep’s feed; and of course, the company makes sure it goes through a patented and highly specialised cleansing process before it’s added to the formulations.
The magic of lanolin is in how its molecular structure is similar to that of human skin lipids (the natural oils produced by your skin), so its highly compatible with the body. Its moisturising abilities are also proven in how its able to hold up to four times its weight in moisture.

Carriol started off with the Lanolips Original 101 Ointment, a multipurpose balm that she created to be used on extremely chapped lips, patches of dry skin, parched cuticles, and so on. If you need to take the hydration up a notch, the Golden Dry Skin Salve is labelled “super intense” for how it has quadruple the amount of lanolin compared to the regular versions, so we’d use this when we’re in a cold and dry climate, or for problem areas of the skin. There are also flavoured lip treatments like the Banana Balm Lip Sheen 3-In-1 that leaves a layer of lustre on the lips, and the Lemonaid Lip Treatment, which treats very dry lips with organic lemon oil that acts as a natural exfoliator.
We’re convinced now that sheep sebum might just be one of the best things to happen to our skin this year. Lano is now available internationally on NET-A-PORTER.com, so you won’t need a trip Down Under to stock up on the range. Baaaaa-rilliant.

A Foundation That Syncs To Your Exact Skin Type

Hands up if you’ve ever fretted about your foundation. Well, yes, the sky is blue, the sea is green, and we’ll always be having a million foundation woes — we’ve kinda accepted that it’s a fact of life, whether it’s worrying whether this 1/9734 shade is an exact match for your skin, or whether your “flawless” complexion’s still there at the end of a long, humid day.
Shiseido, on the other hand, is taking the matter into their own hands. It’s not our problem we can’t find good coverage for  our face — in fact, it should be the foundation’s duty to go along with us instead. Thankfully, their latest innovation is a hard worker. The Shiseido Makeup Synchro Skin Lasting Liquid Foundation is one that caters to you, adapting to your skin tone and recognising your skin conditions in order to bring out a natural, beautiful finish.

It’s working for you, not against you — and the intelligent foundation works regardless of skin type or colour. What this means is that, rather than covering up our flaws, the foundation actually goes a step further to enhance what we already have. But, always, better.

How It Works

1. It Syncs With Your Skin Condition — For Healthy-Looking Skin
Never worry about excess shine! A Micro-Fit Polymer repels sebum and sweat, while a Sebum Absorbing Powder absorbs them, so all you get is a smooth finish that lasts for hours. Then again, good skin calls for shine (or highlights) in the right places, particularly if you’re going for the dewy look. The formula contains Time Match Powder that does the work for us by reflecting the optimal amount of light, according to the amount of sebum present — if an area is less oily, it increases clarity for a more lustrous glow, or, if an area is more oily than usual, the powder becomes semi-transparent, thus diffusing light and reflections so you don’t get extra shine where you don’t need it. Pretty advanced stuff, if you ask us. Since we’re talking about a natural glow, it helps that the foundation contains skincare ingredients too, that protect against dry skin, and keeps your skin moist and smooth.
2. It Syncs With Your Skin Tone — For A Natural-Looking Radiance
Rather than cover up, the foundation aims to play up your skin’s natural beauty, by playing with lights to enhance our natural skin tones. Therefore, the Transparent Correcting Polymer is really a two-in-one solution: it corrects unevenness, like pores and roughness, but still lets your natural skin tone show under the light. No dullness. It helps that the formula contains a Powder Network structure, so when applied, the makeup goes on light and smooth, forming a veil over the skin. Beyond the science though, finding the right match is as easy as choosing from the 12 shades available — whether you’re of a cooler/warmer hue, lighter/deeper tone, though we recommend it’s best to get it done with the professionals at the beauty counters.
3. It Goes On Super Light, But With Good Coverage
We gave it a go, and unlike most other liquid foundations, this one went on unexpectedly light. The sleek bottle pumps out the liquid formula, and when applied, this transforms to a pleasant velvety texture that blends easily, almost barely-there when smoothed over our skin. One layer’s enough! Still, the coverage is buildable and doesn’t go cakey when piled up — plus, with the word “lasting” in its name, we were happy to find that it does last throughout the day, minimal touch-ups and all that.
