Our Favourite Celebrity Beauty Collabs

Don’t you just love it when someone you adore in the film/music/general fame industry drops a collab with one of your favourite beauty brands? While some may balk at the price of something that’s “limited edition”, we’re embracing it wholeheartedly, because every little collab marks a moment in pop and beauty history. So here are our favourite celebrity x beauty collaborations through the years (for you to browse through and reminisce just who peaked when).

Katy Perry x OPI, Jan 2011

opi-katy-perry-collection-black-shatter-500x249

Like a true diva, Katy Perry’s nail polish collaboration with OPI dropped on the first day of the New Year, back in 2011. All shimmer and sass (and one intense black shatter polish), this set of five glitter polishes had none of the boring seriousness of solid basic shades – just like the spirited pop star herself.

Kate Moss x Rimmel London, Sept 2011
CAMPAIGN-HERO_KateMatte

First released to celebrate a decade’s worth of collaboration as the face of Rimmel, Kate Moss’s line of matte lipsticks is, thankfully, still going strong. We love everything from the sleek black packaging – which later expanded to a line of sexy dark red tubes – to the smooth, classic matte shades; but mainly the fact that you can still purchase them today.

Andy Warhol x NARS, Oct 2012
andy

Well technically this collection was more a tribute than a collab, but it still is one we’ll miss dearly. And how could we not, with such a beautiful marriage between the King of Pop Art and the most common form of artistic expression itself? NARS worked with the Warhol Foundation to release a 29-piece range inspired by the artist’s most iconic imagery and funky tastes. Obviously, the explosion of colour was legendary. All we can do now is bask in the memories of a classic collab loved and lost.

Marge Simpson x MAC, Aug 2014
TheSimpsons-AMBIENT-300-1498x1940

Anyone who dares refute that Marge is a celebrity in every way – please leave. The packaging in this collection is already a crowd-pleaser, keeping true to Marge’s iconic blue beehive. And of course, the shades don’t disappoint – bright and poppy like the people of Springfield, and with kitschy names to match (think “Nacho Cheese Explosion”). The set even comes complete with falsies identical to Marge’s own spidery lashes, so you can rock (or could have rocked) that lovable snarky housewife look.

Karl Lagerfeld x shu uemura, Oct 2014
karl

We have no words. This collaboration between shu uemura and the inimitable Karl – but specifically, his pet cat Choupette Lagerfeld – is obviously one of the greatest makeup collections to have graced our earth. The only thing you can do is gawk at the beauty of this collection, named Shupette in honour of the prissy puss, and wonder bemusedly how on earth a cat could have upstaged you in so many ways.

Victoria Beckham x Nails. Inc, May 2015
VVB X Nails Inc Moodshot (5)

Nothing like a sleek, sharp duo of lacquered matte polishes to scream Posh Spice. It may be the tiniest capsule collection ever, but this VVB collaboration is precise and to-the-point – exactly what we would imagine Victoria to be like herself. If you still need convincing, these polishes formulated with delicate bamboo extract (and named Judo Red and Bamboo White) come in bottles created with Venetian glass, and hand-frosted to leave a subtle reveal window – which is probably as Posh as it can get.

Ellie Goulding x MAC, Dec 2015
ELLIE GOULDING_AMBIENT_300

Halcyon Days indeed – it’s only been three months since the launch of Ellie Goulding’s bronzy, shimmery collaboration with MAC and we’re still obsessed. Snag the collection while it’s still available, and nail her signature metallic look with the glowy contour products and shimmer shadows.

Gwen Stefani x Urban Decay, Feb 2016
UD x Gwen

The latest and greatest in celebrity beauty collabs, and one of the most kickass, no doubt. The ex-No Doubt frontwoman’s collection with Urban Decay – UD’s first ever celebrity collaboration – is packed with bold but gorgeous colours, and a ton of musical references to her alma mater as well. And 2016 definitely seems to be Gwen’s year, what with new romances and fresh beginnings. In any case, we’re confident that this is one collaboration that has cemented its place in beauty history, because the magic certainly is in the makeup.

Fashion/Beauty YouTubers Under 25 To Look Out For

Julia Dang and Maya Nilson (TheLineUp), 20

This pair of Swedish vloggers may have started their channel TheLineUp only three years ago, but their sense of style and clean-cut video editing can rival most other more “established” YouTubers. But what we love most is their knack for making every video fun yet concise – a godsend in an epoch of rambly incoherent YouTubers.

Best videos: Styling/Lookbook videos
Star Quality: 3.5/5

Stephanie and Melissa Valenzuela (The Fashion Citizen), 25

In three words: Twins Who Thrift. These Houston-born twin sisters currently reside in Scottsdale, Arizona, and rose to fame for bargain hunting at Goodwill and making DIY clothes and accessories. Their style is admittedly a little quirky – even eccentric at times – but always intriguing to watch, knowing that most of their OOTDs cost under $20 in total.

Best videos: Thrift hauls
Star Quality: 2.5/5

Jess (sunbeamsjess), 22

Props to this classic English beauty for being one of the few YouTubers to successfully keep her private and public spheres separate – we may not know her last name, but the high quality content Jess pushes out regularly (while in university, too!) is more than enough to make up for it. And she may just be 22, but sunbeamsjess has been successfully running since she was just 16, and hasn’t slowed since. Being on the top half of the privilege ladder also means she’s a rare treat to watch; there surely aren’t many undergrads who can splurge on a staggering collection of Chanel bags and high-end beauty products – not to mention a killer (expensive) sense of style.

Best videos: Lookbooks
Star Quality: 4/5

Amy Lee (VAGABOND YOUTH), 22

Los Angeles-based Amy Lee is a Korean-born American who first started out juggling YouTube and her own independent online fashion boutique. While the latter has fizzled out over the years, Amy’s presence on YouTube has grown, and we attribute it to her bubbly vlogs and easygoing personality. Uni kids will like Amy’s relatable videos too, as the UCLA undergrad has put up multiple videos on her college life and advice. Plus, as a communications major, the girl has a knack for editing.

Best videos: School-related videos
Star Quality: 3/5

Tasha Green (Tasha Green), 24

Quite frankly half her star quality comes from those lanky legs of hers. British fashion and beauty blogger Tasha Green is half-French, half-Jamaican, and all style. Her following is still relatively small in the region of YouTube fame, but Tasha’s sass and infuriating ability to rock sweatpants anywhere make her a definite inclusion on this list.

Lacoste L.12.12 Footwear Collection

Every long-lasting brand has a humble beginning; and this one belongs to a French tennis player named René Lacoste. It’s safe to say that he was responsible for changing the face of tennis in the early 1920s. As a methodical perfectionist, he started to perfect his tennis skills since he was young, and eventually went on to win seven Grand Slam singles titles at the French, American and British championships. His sporting prowess and tenacity on the court quickly earned him the nickname “The Crocodile”, which is now a recognisable icon for the brand.
There was one thing he wasn’t happy about though. He felt uncomfortable with how restrictive the long-sleeved white shirts typically worn by male tennis players at that time were. So he worked hard on finding a practical alternative to enhance his skills.

“At the time we all played in white town shirts with buttons, sleeve buttons and collars. I needed something more practical and more healthy.”

He partnered with renowned fabric specialist André Gillier to create the iconic L.12.12 piqué cotton polo, which had had better ventilation and helped to improve performance whilst maintaining a contemporary look. And these are the very qualities that are celebrated in the Lacoste L.12.12 Footwear Collection.

The new collection by Lacoste pays tribute to that iconic polo and embodies the very essence of the brand in the most intimate way. It’s a new release that’s heavily anchored by a distinct historical story, making it truly authentic. The L.12.12 piqué cotton polo lends its minimal aesthetic and fine details to the shoe by including a soft premium leather upper with the brand’s five signature punched holes, clean sporting lines, piqué lining inside the shoe and the iconic embroidered crocodile logo near the heel. To mark this special release, a discreet L.12.12 label is woven under the tongue of the shoe.
Lacoste L.12.12 Footwear Collection, $199. Available in white, black, grey, green and red at Lacoste Wisma Atria and selected Lacoste boutiques.

[Contest] Try Out SK-II’s New Whitening Line At This SK-II x NYLON #AuraGoals Party

The often elusive promise of good skin’s a lot easier when you’ve got a trusted brand on your side. And, fortunately, we’ve got many to choose from, whether they’re from America, Europe, Korea, Japan or a homegrown label. But today, we’re talking about one brand that has transcended borders, a truly global one that unites people as diverse as Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett, Tang Wei and Kim Hee-Ae, all known for crystal-clear skin. And that’s SK-II.

And fresh from their innovative labs come two new whitening products, improvements on the long-existing Cellumination range, based on the discovery of “skin clouds”. Basically, more UV exposure causes damage to the skin, in the form of visible changes such as dark spots and a dull skin tone — a combination of these effects clouds the skin, and the “skin clouds” gather to prevent our skin’s radiance from shining through. Through their research, SK-II has identified three types of skin clouds; brownish clouds represent hidden spots, grey clouds represent pigmentation, while red clouds represent increased hemoglobin, or a dull tone. The only way to counter that, it seems, are with these advanced SK-II products.

GenOptics Aura Essence 50ml

SK-II GenOptics Aura Essence, $299 (50ml)

This contains two new ingredients — Prunus Extract and Inositol. The former, when combined with Pitera and an active whitening ingredient, appropriately deals with sun damage and melanin production within our skin, while Inositol increases clarity in cells. The formula is light enough to go deep into our skin, and deliver the ingredients where they’re needed. What we should see after eight weeks are lesser age spots and pigmentation, and overall brighter skin.

GenOptics Spot Essence 50ml

SK-II GenOptics Spot Essence, $274 (50ml)

This serum contains another new ingredient, Lumina Kelp Extract, making it an upgrade from the Whitening Power Spots Specialist. What this does in the targeted treatment is that it works hand in hand with SK-II’s main whitening active ingredient, the D-Melano P3C, to inhibit melanin production so we’ll see less spots, and prevent future ones, over time.

Of course, after all this talk, you might be tempted to invest in one, but we feel like we’ve got a better deal… something like trying a week’s worth of product samples before that pricey investment. That’s happening at our exclusive SK-II x NYLON #AuraGoals Party that celebrates the launch of these new whitening products.

Other than that, you get to hear from Mediacorp artiste Julie Tan will be sharing her thoughts on the new SK-II GenOptics Aura Essence. And, why not pick up a few handy skincare and makeup tips to enhance the good skin that you’re about to have? You’ll get to do that at in-depth workshop with celebrity makeup artist Larry Yeo.

4 Ways To Up Your Style Game On Your Next Beach Holiday

It’s almost summerrrr! (Okay fine but you know what we mean.) Instagram obsessed or not, it’s always fun to dress up for pretty pictures, so this beach holiday, try switching out certain pieces in your wardrobe for a vacay that looks a little less expected, and a whole lot more fresh.

1. Maxi skirts

Asos, £17.50

Before you protest against 1) heat and 2) functionality, hear us out. Maxis are sophisticated little co-ords that aren’t just appropriate for formal events – switch out your usual daisy dukes for a breezy maxi skirt and instantly elevate your look from East Coast Park Wanderer to Tropical Resort Babe. And you’d be surprised at how airy maxis can be on the beach, especially today’s trendy little numbers with side splits. Pair with a crop top and opt for lighter fabrics like chiffon, instead of cotton – which can and will weigh you down in the heat. Plus point: they’ll keep you safe from ugly uneven sunburns too.
If you’d rather something a little more casual, light straight-cut midi skirts work great too.

2. Kimonos/Open shirts
Urban Outfitters, US$69

In the same vein, less (skin) is more. Kimonos are the perfect way to protect your arms from the sun, while making it look like you put more effort into your outfit than you really did – especially if you’re still intent on wearing shorts. (Because, layers!) Having a second layer to chuck on over your bathing suit also makes casual transitioning from the beach to an indoor setting, angmoh-style, more socially acceptable. If kimonos are a little too girly for you, an open shirt or flannel as your outer layer works too. Don’t forget to roll up the sleeves for a more relaxed look.

3. Headwear
Asos, £15.00

You’re overseas; why not? Despite the tropical humidity here in Singapore, headgear of any kind looks, regrettably, out of place given our largely urban setting. But it’s a whole different story on wide expanses of white, sandy beaches. Ditch the straw beach hats – that are clearly past even being passé – and try a floppy felt hat instead. Sounds a little ridiculous to don in 30-degree weather but they do do a good job of keeping your hair and face out from the sun’s harmful reach; and lend a chic Coachella vibe to your resort outfits too. Alternatively, spring for those 150baht flower crowns you stocked up on in Bangkok but never actually got around to wearing. Remember: judgment does not exist overseas!

4. Lace-up sandals
Windsorstore.com, US$14.90

Disregarding the fact that you probably clicked on this article thinking you could get away with wearing slippers the entire holiday – use this next trip to really up your shoe game. Leave your flip flops at home where they belong and show your feet some love with pretty lace-up sandals instead. Sure they take a little more time to put on and take off, but they’re on-trend, airy, and make everything you’re wearing look better – even if it’s just a bikini.

The Biggest Beauty Service Booking App Is Here

This is a beauty game-changer, for sure. With the launch of the Vaniday app here in Singapore, we officially are now able to book beauty services from over 800 local beauty service providers – it’s, by far, the app with the biggest database yet, covering hair, nails, makeup services, aesthetics, hair removal, spas, massages, and barber services (yes, they’ve got the men covered as well).
We’ve booked our first appointment on Vaniday, and here’s what we liked about it: the interface is well-designed and intuitive, such that picking our appointment date and time was straightforward enough. It’s also possible to search by location, so that if you find yourself in Toa Payoh and hit by a sudden desire for a manicure, for example, the app generates all the available ones near you for your picking.

image1   image4   image2

It’s also really convenient that each service provider’s page lists their full menu of services with pricing, so you know exactly what you’re paying for – and payment can be settled immediately by credit card via the app, so all you have to do when you turn up for your appointment is enjoy it.
image3

The page you should be getting familiar with, though, is the Exclusive Promotions page, for the regular updates on the places currently offering services at a sweet discount.
Many of the big players of the local beauty services industry can be found on Vaniday, so you’ll probably find your go-to salon on there. This is as hassle-free as it gets, so there’s hardly any excuse for falling behind on your brow or hair sessions from now.

Vaniday is available for free download on the Apple App Store and Google Play. vaniday.com.sg

Is A Ruby Rose x Urban Decay Collection Coming Our Way?

It’s a match made in beauty heaven: Our favourite badass cosmetics brand, Urban Decay, has just signed our favourite badass NYLON Singapore cover girl Ruby Rose as its latest ambassador, or, in the brand’s words, their “Most Addictive New Vice”.
Just a couple of days ago, the LA-based brand made this succinct announcement: “Ruby Rose. Urban Decay. Obviously.

Ruby Rose. Urban Decay. Obviously. #UrbanDecay @rubyrose

A photo posted by Urban Decay Cosmetics (@urbandecaycosmetics) on

“Obviously” indeed – for a brand that spreads the message of freedom of self-expression that goes hand in hand with an obsession with exploring colour, they couldn’t have pick a better person to represent all of that than Ruby Rose. In her debut campaign image, she embodies it all perfectly already: sleeve tattoo on full display, and her signature slicked back short hair framing some seriously fierce eyeliner and a fuchsia pout, from which a small makeup applicator dangles like a cigarette. Rose herself made the big announcement via Instagram, but it’s her caption that’s really the most exciting part:

What do Ruby Rose and UD have coming?? We can’t wait to freak out. We’d put our money on these possibilities: lipsticks in badass shades, brow tools, eyeliners for sure, and maybe… a Ruby Rose smoky eyeshadow palette? Oh boy, we’ll be all over that last one if it ever becomes reality.
In a statement released by the brand, Urban Decay founder Wende Zomnir was equally cryptic: “Better things come to those who wait – all will be revealed in time.” We sure hope “in time” means soon, because we can barely rein in our excitement already.

We Tried The Kendall & Kylie Game And It Was…

Horrifying.
First things first, don’t kid yourself – the Kardashians and Jenners are easily the hottest celebrity-socialites in Hollywood right now; stubborn denial can only be directly linked to alternative hipsters still clinging onto their Nokias. And these days, with fame comes your very own Sims-style game, to ensure that you are well and truly pervasive. After Kim Kardashian’s very successful mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood took off in 2014, it seemed only inevitable that her then up-and-coming half-sisters would join in with some friendly sibling rivalry. And thus, the Kendall & Kylie game was born.
So! Would this game be able to hold its own next to Kim’s climb-to-Hollywood-fame virtual adventure? Barely two weeks in from its release, I decided to give the Jenners a go. Unfortunately, I don’t really have very many positive things to say.

The premise is the usual – pick an avatar and aim to become the most famous Jenner-commoner hybrid within the universe of the game. I started out easy, fashioning my avatar to be as Asian as possible (although I cheated and went for typical Kylie lips because why the hell not).

IMG_8646 IMG_8650 IMG_8649

So this is as Asian as a Jenner can get, apparently. Undaunted, I proceeded to name her. Naturally, I picked a celebrity-worthy name.
IMG_8653

Here’s where things started to get ugly. Almost immediately after fashioning Kamanda Jenner, I was thrown into a peasant’s position – a limited closet of shabby clothes, no money to pay my rent, and a pretty shitty job I didn’t even ask for. I started out slave to my landlady, and then the bratty daughter of my employer. Obviously, as in most games, you have to work your way to the top; earn points, unlock levels, break high scores. But Kendall & Kylie aren’t asking a warrior princess of you; they’re forcing you to be characteristically ruthless and shameless, to manoeuvre obstacles till you get what you want (or think you want) – fame.

IMG_8658 IMG_8659IMG_8660

There’s no liberal clicking around the game universe – you’re obligated to click on characters’ speech bubbles to hear them talk (or text you), after which you have to click on computer-generated responses to continue the conversation and move the game along. If you’re lucky, you get to choose from up to three different responses. But even then, when you choose ratty responses unbecoming of an Internet star, you lose money and points. So in a really meta way you become a slave to the game too, unable to make your own choices to respond or move around – you complied or remained stuck where you were. It took me by surprise at first, but soon I was able to realise which responses were the most lucrative in the long run, because, you know, PR.

But the scariest part of going through the game, is realising how insanely obsessed the world has become with being social media-famous or “viral” – which was literally one of the responses listed early in the game for you to choose how you’re going to make money. Everything revolves around gaining followers and likes on social media; you unlock new levels and outfits by posting selfies with Kendall Jenner; you race against the clock to vlog as much as possible to earn “star points”. Your ultimate goal is to climb the follower hierarchy of all the players in the K-universe – something that’s highlighted to you right from the beginning.
IMG_8673  IMG_8661

And that’s when it hits you – how dystopian everything seems. Your life in the game literally revolves around likes and follows – if you don’t instagram it, why’d you even participate? To say nothing of the fact that this chilling race to the top almost exactly reflects how our generation and the one below behaves in today’s cyber society, it was horrifying knowing that celebrities with so much influence in pop culture were actively promoting such behaviour. “It’s normal,” I started thinking to myself, “working for the likes.”
IMG_8674  IMG_8681

If anything, perhaps the most fulfilling part of the game was the actualisation of every tween girl’s wish – to be besties with Kendall and Kylie Jenner. (I have to admit, there was a regrettable rush of excitement when they followed me on Instagram.) But that was it. It came to a point where this endless chase for followers got too tiring and scary – would there ever be an end? Since the currency here is followers, how does one ever win? I wanted out, and before I’d even unlocked a new pair of shoes.
By all means, give the game a try (it’s free on the app store anyway). The thrill of going viral and gaining Internet celebrity status might be appealing, given that after all, it’s still just a game. But it took under an hour for me to realise it just wasn’t for little ol’ pleb me. If it’s any consolation, though, Kamanda Jenner will always be a star in my eyes.

5 Things We Discovered At A Tour of the McDonald's Kitchen

Somehow, this proved as magical as being on a movie set. Forgive our excitement here — none of us from the NYLON team has worked behind-the-scenes at McDonald’s before, and since we haven’t, we had tons of questions going in: what are those strange plastic drawers that the crew pick up their patties and big breakfast items from, is the food preparation truly hygienic and clean, how long do they store food items in the kitchen, and how “fast” can our fast food get?
Well, McDonald’s yesterday gave us a tour of their kitchen and premises at the JEM outlet, prior to the launch of their new Crispy Chicken Sandwich, and it’s safe to say that we were very satisfied. Sit tight as we attempt to get to the bottom of those burning questions.

1. Those mysterious drawers are pretty amazing — and we finally know what they’re called.

Photo Mar 02, 3 29 11 PM Photo Mar 02, 3 28 00 PM Photo Mar 02, 3 27 51 PM (1)

Yep, for all those keen observers who are always peering to the back of the kitchen while waiting for your orders, these “drawers” actually have a super-sexy, out-of-this-world name. You’d never guess it: the UHC. That stands for Universal Holding Cabinet, and these specially-designed units serve a key function, that is, to hold certain food items, warm, for a set period of time and temperature.
Each slot indicates the product, time and temperature, and these settings ensure that our food is as fresh as the minute they were made. Our favourite McNuggets, McWings, and also the stuff that go into burgers and breakfast sets, like beef patties, mushrooms and onions, are neatly stored here.
2. Everything gets assembled really fast.
We didn’t exactly time the process, but we have to say, the progress at each station happens so speedily it was hard to snap proper pictures. Firstly, everyone knows how the fries station looks like — what you might not have noticed, is how easy they get salted after coming out from the fryer. Once those Russet Burbank babies are spread out on a metal tray, all it takes is a tip of a special salt shaker that falls like rain and spreads the seasoning as far out as possible, and serves one, controlled, serving all around. Great for even flavour.

Next, the grill. The fast food restaurant uses two types of beef for their patties, sourced from Australia and New Zealand, and they arrive already in a neat patty shape. What’s left is really just placing them on a grill, and pressing this huge lid down, one that’s automated to give an even, double-sided, unscorched cook. Then, a light touch of seasoning. Rest assured, your Quarter Pounders and Big Macs are safe.

After that, comes the burger assembly station. Everything’s packed in neat cabinets or trays for easy access, and we saw a worker easily piling on the ideal ingredients for a cheeseburger on warmed bread, all wrapped up in a matter of seconds.
3. Ordering a Create Your Taste burger meal puts you at a great advantage.
Photo Mar 02, 3 28 33 PM Photo Mar 02, 3 30 00 PM

One, you’ll get premium ingredients that includes guacamole, grilled pineapple and tortilla strips, and you get to customise your burger, right down to the buns and type of cheese. Another great thing is that your food is prepared upon ordering, so it’s really the freshest it can be. Plus, the fact that it comes with a nice fries basket and a wooden tray means it should fit into the whole Instagram #aesthetic you’re trying to achieve.
4. Sometimes, staff chill out at the crew room.
Photo Mar 02, 3 46 27 PM

This is a small secret room where staff eat their meals and chill out, but it’s also highly essential for one thing: disseminating the tons of information across all 130 restaurants islandwide. Here, you’ll spot a board with materials that talk about their new Breaded Salmon burger, and, so everyone’s on the same page, a TV that loops videos of how to assemble a burger.
We were told that all staff, even corporate ones, have to go through kitchen training, and when you’re there, most staff get rotated across the various stations so everyone gets a chance at different parts of the process.
5. They have a top-secret, locked… pantry.
Photo Mar 02, 3 49 52 PM Photo Mar 02, 3 50 08 PM Photo Mar 02, 3 51 39 PM

It’s equivalent to a safe, because, you know, food safety and all that. That said, everything was clean and off the floor, while, expectedly, most of the products in the room temperature area, like sauces and packaging, are stored in cardboard boxes. Then, there’s a chiller where temperatures are kept at 1-4 deg Celsius for things like hotcakes and cinnamon melts. We also stepped inside the freezer, this time at at least -18 deg Celsius, so we were really freezing, and found neat boxes of nuggets and patties.
The whole food storage facility operates in a “first-in-first-out” rule so the items that are closer to their expiry dates get cleared out first, so, yes, we don’t get old, mouldy food. How often they’re stocked depends on each venue — it can be a fast turnover rate or a limited storage space — but items get ordered either daily or twice/thrice a week.

Lastly, since it’s out today, let’s talk a little about the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. This one’s a succulent chicken patty topped with wild rocket leaves, shredded lettuce and tomato slices between two soft semolina buns, which means it sounds exactly like a high-class McChicken. But better, we assure you. The crisp is wonderful against the soft buns, and the sauce, interesting. Order it, starting from $7.50 for a meal.
All this is part of McDonald’s bid to cater to our changing tastes, and it’s no surprise that the new burger was released so soon after their last innovation, the Breaded Salmon burger. What they do is market research, including focus groups (we want in, by the way), to find out what Singapore customers like, and then, coming up with a menu that suits that. Two trends stand out — first, that we’re more keen on nutritious and healthy options, and second, being a well-travelled bunch, we’re open to a more global palette.
It kinda boils down to this though: you create a demand for things and they’ll try to make it happen. Twister fries all year round? A spicier McSpicy? A kimchi burger? Sky’s the limit! No word yet on more shaker fries variations, we did try asking, but we’ll see.

How To Wear The New Laneige Two Tone Collection

Like us, you’re probably real stoked about LANEIGE’s new Two Tone Collection: Besides four new shades of the much-loved Two Tone Lip Bars, they’ve debuted the Two Tone Shadow Bars that are eyeshadows in the same dual-colour stick form, packaged in the most insanely pretty rose gold cases.
The packaging alone is enough to make us plonk down our money for all the colours – if you feel the same, calm down a little, and let’s take a good look at what actually matters: the shades themselves. These new launches are essentially 16 new colours and 8 new colour combinations we can now play with, and we understand if you don’t know where to begin. After all, they’re all so pretty! If only we can wear them all at once! We get you, but as to how to actually make these fresh colours work on your face and look as cute as Lee Sung Kyung, LANEIGE’s newest ambassador, does, we’ve got some ideas below.

Peachy Keen
Two Tone Shadow Bar in No. 1 Humming Coral + Two Tone Lip Bar in No. 13 Orange Blurring
For eyeshadow that’s pretty without being too… girly, we turn to this light coral with pinkish tones. It’s paired with a bronze shimmer that we would blend up to right below the brow bone, before letting the coral go over the crease. On the lips, add an orange tint with the Two Tone Lip Bar in No. 13 Orange Blurring to the centre, while the white shade helps add a concealer effect on the outer part of the lips to easily nail a sweet ombre lip. Overall, the kind of colour combination that makes your look instantly fresher-faced, even if you haven’t had your morning coffee and you’re feeling closer like one of the walking dead on the inside. But with your cute makeup, no one will be able to tell!

Coming Up Roses
Two Tone Shadow Bar in No. 2 Golden Rose + Two Tone Lip Bar in No. 14 Dear Pink
The white shimmer of the Shadow Bar acts as an eyeshadow base – don’t be afraid to let it go all the way up to the browbone. Then, use the gold-toned rose on the other side of the bar to create a light daytime-friendly smoky eye, letting it go darker on the outer corner of the lids. The Two Tone Lip Bar in No. 14 Dear Pink has a light pastel pink framing a glossy fuchsia, and when paired with the shadow colours, looks glamorous without being too OTT for the office/school.

Summertime Gladness
Two Tone Shadow Bar in No. 3 Orange Island + Two Tone Lip Bar in No. 11 Juicy Pop
You might be thinking, whoa, that’s a lot of orange on the face at one time. And, yellow lips? But, trust us on this: This is a cute summery combination that you’ll be able to pull off. Just keep the shimmery orange on the Shadow Bar close to the lashline and blend it well with the cream shimmer so your eyeshadow won’t steal the show. The spotlight will be on your juicy lips – the yellow goes on the outside and the orange on the inside, so the yellow is just a subtle tint that helps add more dimension to the orange. Just check out LANEIGE ambassador Lee Sung Kyung rocking it in the top picture. See? We told you it works.

Caffeine Dose
Two Tone Shadow Bar in No. 4 Coffee Bronze + Two Tone Lip Bar in No. 12 Maxi Red
We call this a K-Beauty-style nighttime look. Instead of the traditional dark smoky eye using black and dark blue shades, layer this shimmery dark brown with a pink-toned cream, and line under the eyes with the lighter shade as well to get an eye-enlarging effect. And as a lighter alternative to the traditional red lip, the Two Tone Lip Bar’s Maxi Red shade keeps the red to the centre, fading out to a light pink.

The 7 Essentials To Keep When Cleaning Out Your Closet

We’ve all been there – stared at a closet bursting with clothes we just can’t bear to chuck, wondering… How? … Why? … When did this even happen? Times like this, you just have to suck it up and face the music – you need a closet clean-out.
But don’t worry; you don’t have to pull a complete Becky Bloomwood in your wardrobe detox. Tactical tossing and strategic saving are your secrets to starting over! And just so we’re clear – you can save way more than just the basic white top.

1. Black Trousers/Pants

This tops my list, and with good reason. A quality, fitting pair of black pants is more versatile than even the beloved Plain White Tee – it can see you through a hard-pressed workday in the office, to that GNO you’ve been looking forward to all week; slap on a slouchy tee and it’ll even work for a casual day out. The best part? It’s the definition of effortlessness – looking sleek and sharp without even having to try. You’ll be surprised at how good they make you feel too.

2. Blue Jeans

For those days when you want to let your hair down a little, a comfy pair of true blue jeans is a good substitute for your daily trouser. Whether you opt for a classic, flattering skinny jean, or a more alternative boyfriend jean, trust that denim indeed, hand to heart, goes with everything.

3. Any Black Top – seriously, any black top

There’s a reason why many big names in fashion are only ever seen in black. As much as I do appreciate the clean freshness of a white top, black just seems so much more… sophisticated. Regardless of the cut or style, like the black trousers, a black top can pull any outfit together instantly. Plus, it’s a lot less “recognisable” as a co-ordinate – which will help when you’re trying not to look like an outfit repeater with only half your wardrobe left.

4. A Bodycon Skirt

Contrary to popular belief, a bodycon skirt is actually flattering on all body types. It adds more shape to a skinny silhouette, and accentuates a curvy girl’s killer figure. Not to mention, it can be both work-appropriate and party-safe *wink* That said, don’t go for the tightest fitting mini skirt you have – if it clings too tightly it’ll only emphasise any bumps you’ve been otherwise trying to hide.

5. Thin Stripes

Another good alternative for a basic top is a striped tee – or tank, crop top, shirt, or blouse. Neatly aligned stripes in a good material will look crisp and chic paired with anything. Just remember – the thinner the stripes, the more flattering. You don’t want to look unintentionally pregnant just because you ran out of clothes.

6. Denim Jacket

This cannot be reiterated enough – denim is timeless. Trends can come and go, but a solid denim jacket will last you forever. And Singaporean heat or not, it’s time to recognise that sometimes comfort must be compromised in the name of fashion, and fashion = layers.

7. Sneaks!

Thank god for this decade’s obsession with sneakers and anything sports luxe! As if you needed reminding; but hang on to those trusty Converse Chucks or Nike kicks you were thinking of switching out for heels, because you’ll be surprised at how well they go with everything.

The Cushion Blushers To Lust Over

Cushion makeup is taking over the world, people. It’s not just brand after brand launching cushion after cushion – with the Western ones playing catch-up with the Koreans majorly this year – but also the race to release as many versions of cushion makeup as possible, to capitalise on the trend while women all over the world still love the idea of applying their makeup with a cushion.
This has meant the materialisation of cushion makeup for practically every part of the face. Here, we want to focus on a particular class of cushion makeup that has managed to get us quite obsessed: cushion blushers. Think cushions soaked in colour instead of BB cream or foundation, which you can pat on with the same flat cushion applicator, or, depending on the packaging, pat directly onto your face.
Why do these cushion blushers excite us so much more than regular compact or liquid forms? Mostly, it’s the idea of being able to pat on a soft, natural-looking flush. You won’t be able to do any contouring with these, that’s for sure, but they can also look mighty fine on the apples of the cheeks.
There are more cushion blushers out there than you might expect, in an assortment of packaging and shades that make for some real eye candy. Get ready for lots more coming your way soon enough.

Stila Aqua Glow Watercolour Blush
Some argue that technically, Stila beat AmorePacific in launching the first-ever cushion foundation – Sport Color was launched in 2002, but failed to take off in the US market, and was eventually quietly discontinued. While the Korean brands eventually became known for being the pioneers of cushion, Stila still releases cushion makeup that come with their exclusive mesh touch dispenser. Pick up the watery pigments with a finger or brush, and blend onto the cheeks.
$37, Sephora.

Lancôme Cushion Blush Subtil
Lancôme’s first foray into cushion foundations, the Blanc Expert Cushion, was a hit with the NYLON Singapore team. We really liked the higher coverage it offered as compared to the sheerer BB cushions that seemed to populate the Korean offerings, thanks to the brand’s proprietary Big Cell Cushion: the cushion is made with larger pores, which allows the applicator to pick up more product with each pat, and the formula to go on moist. The Cushion Blush Subtil has all of that, and comes in a nice range of subtle to neon shades for all your moods.
$55, Lancôme counters.

Peripera Ah! Much Real My Cushion Blusher
How cute is this one, though? This one has a more unique packaging with the fluffy cushion applicator found at the end of the tube – just squeeze, and the colour seeps through the cushion, ready to be applied straight onto the face. While the packaging design might indicate otherwise, the shades go on rather sheer, and might even be more suitable as a highlighter.
$15.90, selected Watsons.

ETUDE HOUSE Cushion Blusher
Both the compact and cushion applicator of this blush are small, so you might have to tap the cushion over your cheeks a few times to cover enough ground. Still, the bright colours go on nicely sheer and are easily buildable, and we also like how they can be slipped into the smallest pouches. Just try not to lose it in the clutter of your handbag/makeup pouch.
$18, ETUDE HOUSE stores.

KYE for shu uemura Fresh Cushion Blush
shu uemura is about to launch their first-ever cushion this month, and their first ever cushion blusher is about to follow in quick succession. What makes this one extra exciting is it’s part of the KYE for shu uemura collection, the brand’s artist collaboration with Korean fashion designer Kathleen Kye. That means limited edition packaging that you’ll definitely want to own and have bragging rights. See the entire KYE for shu uemura collection here.
$48, available at Sephora ION Orchard from 14 April to 31 May, and at shu uemura ION Orchard, Bugis Junction, JEM and VivoCity from 1 to 31 May.

L’Oréal Paris Lucent Magique Cushion Blush
Seems like pink and and orange tones are the main colour themes when it comes to these upcoming cushion blush launches, but it’s true that these are two universally flattering shades that easily create that healthy flush. L’Oréal Paris is about to give us a new drugstore cushion option with its upcoming Lucent Magique range, which will include this blush in two shades.
$22.90, Watsons, Guardian and Sasa from April.
