Our Favourite Snacks And Drinks From MoguShop That’ll Make You Feel Like You’re Travelling Across Japan

It’s been a long, long time since any of us have set foot in Japan, no thanks to the global pandemic limiting our travel plans. Any true blue Singaporean can attest, we sure miss the powdery slopes of Niseko, the pink blooms of cherry blossom trees during hanami, and even the award-winning efficiency of Japan’s high-speed rails — most of all though, we miss the food.

From sushi and yakitori to late-night ramen at popular chain Ichiran, even a trip to the convenience store or supermarket in Japan is an exciting one, since we get to chance upon aisles and aisles of never-before-seen snacks, most of which are centred around the best of Japan’s produce. Uni chips, anyone? Or peach kit-kats? With travel to Japan at a current halt though, this experience seems quite a distant dream — that is, until we discovered online grocery store, MoguShop.

Calling all Japanophiles. The online marketplace definitely stands out for its clear curation of products — the wide variety of produce, groceries, snacks, beverages, and more are all sourced from Japan, and MoguShop works directly with Japanese and international suppliers in order to bring us high-quality Japanese-focused products at reasonable prices.

All that, and there’s also the convenience of online shopping via this one-stop shop. Rather than queueing or jostling through the crowds at grocery stores, it’s far easier to have everything delivered fresh to your doorstep after comfortably browsing through their options from your home.

Another thing we appreciate is how they’ve grouped their products according to Japan’s various prefectures. You see, MoguShop stocks everything from dashi stock to seafood, soya sauce and other cooking essentials, so it might take some time to go through their entire inventory. What made it easier though was browsing through the local delicacies and specialties flown in from key Japanese prefectures, whether it’s the seafood hub of Miyagi or the agriculturally-abundant site of Saitama.

That’s how we managed to discover the cutest Float Lemon Tea! This one’s from Mitsuura Brewery, a small brewery in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which comes with slices of heart-shaped dried lemons that drift serenely atop their blend of fragrant black tea. That’s the beauty of a shopping experience at MoguShop too — you just might stumble on something that’ll become your new favourite, something that delights our senses and seems to whisk us away to Japan. Ahead, we review some of our favourite snacks and drinks from the various prefectures.

MIYAGI

  • “CANNED” Minami-Sanriku Silver Salmon in Soy Sauce, $6.80
  • Salt-Free Carrot Somen, $5.50
  • Urakasumi Junmai Sake, $20.50

Located just 90 minutes away from Tokyo, and further north along the Pacific coast of Japan, Miyagi Prefecture is famous for its lush greenery and natural landscapes, a respite from the country’s bustling city life. The most well-known site happens to be on the official list of Three Most Scenic Places of Japan — Matsushima Bay, where you get to see 200 over pine-covered islands, while hot spring resort towns abound, and the Zao Fox Village and Cat Island are sought-after attractions as well. Of course, Miyagi’s known to be a leading food-producing region in the country, for well over four hundred years, and is where you can find fresh seafood, as well as seafood huts and cafes run by fishermen and farmers.

Cue this Canned Silver Salmon from Maruya Seafoods. With a background of producing canned seafood products for over 70 years, the brand only looks for top-notch ingredients, and in this case, a sashimi-grade fatty Silver Salmon caught off the water of Miyagi, then simmered in soy sauce without chemicals or added preservatives.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this! The salmon came in a chunk rather than flakes, which assured me that I was getting a good-quality cut, and while I can see this being tasty over cooked rice, it was delicious as an afternoon snack on crackers as well. The fish was moist and soft, with a broth that was fatty from its natural juices but not overly oily.

You also can’t go wrong with junmai sake, or pure rice sake, and this one’s from Urakasumi Brewery, one of Japan’s most popular and prominent breweries, which the Miyagi region is proud to house. For the Urakasumi Junmai Sake, it was light and smooth on the palate, and is said to come with notes of banana and caramelised nuts. I’m not at a connoisseur level, so what I can say is that it’s as smooth as gently balanced as promised, while bringing in a tinge of sweetness at the end. And if you’re wondering how this sake’s linked to the Miyagi region, note that it’s best paired with grilled fish and meat.

SAITAMA

  • Honda Seika Kin no Uni-sen Rice Crackers , $4.60
  • Anthony’s Popcorn Chocolate & Almond, $3.60
  • GINGER SHOOT honey bee [Ginger Beer with Honey], $22.80 for 3 Bottles
  • Kawagoe “Saimoo” Sweet Potato Cider, $4.50

Now, we find ourselves at the agriculturally-rich Saitama, a region that neighbours Tokyo and is part of the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan area. Blessed with the ideal climate and abundant soil, Saitama Prefecture is once again known for their produce, and a wide variety of that too. Some of their most loved produce include Saigyoku Pears, rice, sweet potato, broccoli, green onions, and sake. For sights, the picturesque traditional shophouses at castle town Kawagoe are certainly a trip through the past, while you can hit up one of the over 35 sake breweries throughout the prefecture for a tour.

Just like its produce, the selection of specialties and up-and-coming brands are as diverse too. My favourites were the ultra-umami Uni-sen Rice Crackers, which featured crispy rice flavoured with sea urchin sauce. Rice Senbei is a regional specialty of Saitama, and it’s done so light and crisp here, with the uni packing a lot of rich seafood flavour.

Another snack that tops the list would be Anthony’s Popcorn, which seems rather un-Japanese until I learnt of its origin. Asahi Seika has long been known for their karintō deep-fried sugar snacks, and here, they’ve applied the same honey-making technology to their popcorn series, as well as an “air pop” technique that uses no oil during the kernel-popping process. And the flavours did speak for themselves! I like that the popcorn was crunchy and best of all, evenly coated all around, with a depth of chocolate flavour from the cocoa and roasted crushed almonds. The bag disappeared in no time.

Then, there are the drinks. The Ginger Shoot is basically a non-alcoholic fermented ginger beer, and this was one of the fresher ones I’ve tasted. It still has that lovely carbonated effect that one would expect, though the aroma of the ginger, citrus and honey came through a lot more while being balanced and fragrantly sweet; according to MoguShop, the ginger used here is grown in Minuma rice field, a famous ginger-producing area since the Edo period.

We did mention Kawagoe a little earlier, and here’s what their famous for, everything sweet potato! Saimoo, then, is one such sweet potato product, a cider that’s flavoured with notes of roasted sweet potato. It’s certainly unique, I’d say, from the illustration on the bottle that references traditional bottles of cider and the historical region, to the fizzy drink that has a sweet and earthy taste.

YAMAGUCHI

Yamaguchi is one of those places you’d go for off-the-beaten-path travel, since it’s familiar but not exactly a tourist trap. As the westernmost prefecture of the main island of Japan, it’s known for well-preserved castle towns, serene scenery and the largest limestone cave in Japan. Hagi, one of its main cities, is the capital of a major samurai domain, and known for local-style pottery too. For things to eat, there are plenty of seafood markets which serve up the Yamaguchi specialty, fugu, or puffer fish.

MoguShop’s partnership with the prefecture, though, centres around soups and beverages, which includes the Float Lemon Tea set I was waxing lyrical about earlier. Mitsuura Brewery’s blend of fragrant organic Japanese black tea packs a whole lot of lemon flavour alongside the tea’s natural aroma, without being too bitter. For the aesthetic appeal, the teas come with dried sliced lemons, including some heart-shaped ones, that float elegantly atop your brew. Just add hot water! It’s easy and fun to prepare this for guests, while also comforting to know that they use “eco lemons” that are grown with as little pesticides and chemical fertilisers as possible so even its skin is 100% edible.

Part of the series is also a Yuzu Tea with Honey, where the hard work of preparing a citron tea from scratch is made much easier via this very accessible bottle. The benefits of the drink is something your Asian parent would be proud of, since both yuzu and acacia honey, used here, have strong antibacterial properties and are rich in Vitamin C. Yuzu peel also contains limonene, which improves blood circulation, while the tea itself tastes naturally sweet with a nice citrusy tang from the yuzu.

There’s also another citrus-forward drink that I enjoyed from the Yamaguchi prefecture, and that’s the Hoshuji Cider. Its bottle is definitely unique, since I hardly come across ciders that don’t arrive in glass bottles; this one looks quirky indeed. I really enjoyed the refreshing taste of summer oranges from the effervescent beverage, especially when straight out of the fridge, making it a very welcome day drink (since it’s not too alcoholic!).

OKAYAMA

  • Okayama White Peach Chu Hi, $7.50
  • Setoda Lemon Chu Hi, $7.50
  • Okayama White Peach Jellies, $5.50

Located West of Japan, a list of Okayama’s most well-known cities should give you an idea of where it’s at; the prefecture counts Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima among some of its top attractions. Then again, it’s also referred to as the land of sunshine, with the Momotaro, the “Peach Boy” as the region’s mascot, and rightly so — Okayama is famous for its local fruits, chief of which is the white peach that abound in sweetness and juiciness.

How apt then that these Chu Hi drinks are at the top of our shopping list. With a term that’s an abbreviation of “shōchū highball”, Chu-Hi is an alcoholic drink that’s traditionally made with Barley shōchū and carbonated water flavoured with lemon. Setouchi’s version uses 6% of Okayama-grown white peach juice, which gives the drink a refreshing aroma and sweetness.

As for the Jellies, these are everything you’d expect from top-grade Japanese jellies. Fun fact: these White Peach Jellies are actually award-winning, and have topped the “Honorary Governor’s Award (Art Category)” at the 26th National Confectionery Expo Hiroshima. The desserts certainly do the pride and joy of Okayama’s local farmers proud — they’re soft and smooth and wobbly, and melt on your tongue into the most fragrant, sweet taste of peaches. That’s because they’re made using actual White Peach flesh that’s been pureed, then topped off with peach juice.

JAPAN MALL

  • Age Kiriboshi Daikon Karikari Snack Spicy Flavour, $7
  • Koikeya Pride Potato Chips Iron Plate Garlic, $3.30
  • Animal Bekko Candy, $3
  • Ryogokochi Yubari Melon Jelly, $3.80

Last but not least, MoguShop has a ‘Japan Mall’ selection that brings together items from across the prefectures — the best products from all across Japan. The project was started by JETRO (Japanese External Trade Organisation), and aims to support and feature good-quality Japanese products from local manufacturers, so they’re more known to the rest of the world.

Got kids? Or maybe you’re a kid at heart. The animal shapes from these Animal Bekko Candy, traditional Japanese hard candy sweets, are way too adorable to behold, and are usually found among the street stalls at Japanese festivals. They’re kinda made by caramelising sugar over direct fire, so they are sweet, but serve as cute snacks if you need a sugary hit.

Gotta say it, these Koikeya Pride Potato Chips are one of my favourites from this entire selection. If you like your chips big on flavour, this is it. It’s not immediately obvious from the name, but the chips mimic the rich flavour of beef steak cooked on an iron grill plate, so you’re getting those wafts of beefy notes, along with the sweet-and-sharp bite of garlic. The potato chip itself holds it own too, and while thicker than usual, at least doesn’t disappear when you bite down, while with a slight sweetness that balances the very umami notes.

Another day, another jelly, which are some of my favourite convenience store products from Japan since they always get the texture and flavour right. This one‘s basically Yubari Melon in a cup, and has all the sweet, exceptional flavour you’ll get from the Japan-exclusive melon, grown only in Yubari, Hokkaido and specially cared for within controlled greenhouses.

The Age Kiriboshi Daikon Karikari Snack though, was a surprise find. I didn’t think daikon, or white radish, a vegetable, would taste good and was skeptical when this was touted as a beer snack — I was wrong. Made with just Miyazaki prefecture’s dried Daikon, rice flour and oil to give us nutrients and a daily dose of dietary fibre, this snack is yummy and lightly salty, with a texture that reminds me of sliced cuttlefish strips. Since this was the spicy option, the shredded radish also had a light spicy, addictive kick as an aftertaste, definitely something I’d purchase again and again.

6 Tried-And-Tested Skincare Products We’d Recommend This Season

With new skincare products launching every week, it can feel like a case of too much skincare, too little time — and not much real estate to try them out as well. So what’s absolutely worth it? These. An eye serum from Aesop, calming masks and soothing moisturisers from Fresh and Laneige that are especially welcome given our current soaring heat and humidity, an antioxidant-packed night serum from trusted local brand Sigi Skin, and more.

1. Fresh Floral Recovery Calming Mask

WHAT TO KNOW: Fresh Beauty’s masks are certainly well-loved — check out their famed Rose Face Mask for instance — so of course we’re rejoicing now that there’s a new skincare mask in town. The Floral Recovery Calming Mask focuses on calming signs of sensitivity, specifically redness, uneven skin tone and rough texture, and aims to reverse these effects by way of a botanically-powered formula. It uses four key floral extracts — passionflower, cornflower, cherry blossom, and peony — to soothe and calm visible redness, while Vitamin C and Squalene ingredients are added to further brighten and smoothen skin.

WHAT WE LOVE: Instant results! Fresh wasn’t kidding when they called this an overnight mask, since the results are certainly that fast. You may not feel like you have sensitive skin, but more and more people are experiencing the effects of sensitised skin, which can be due to circumstances such as sun damage and not applying sunscreen in the day, frequent switching of skincare products or too-reactive ones, or perhaps a weak skin barrier. I had used the mask after a day out in the sun too, which, despite my best attempts at sunscreen, still left my skin looking slightly red and dry.

While applying the calming mask, I noticed that the soft, balm-like cream had a slightly cooling effect and helped cocoon my skin in all its richness. I applied a thick layer and let that sit on my face for a bit before patting it in the excess. The next morning, my skin was completely free of redness and irritation, that is, way more soothed, and in fact, was bouncy, soft, and deeply hydrated. Skincare emergency or not, I’ll be adding this to my regular masking routine.

$105 (100ml). available at Fresh stores and sephora

2. Aesop Exalted Eye Serum

WHAT TO KNOW: Aesop’s latest Exalted Eye Serum supplies the delicate skin around your eyes with vitamins and nutrients, thanks to this lightweight but potent eye serum. It’s formulated to provide targeted and sustained vitamin-enhanced hydration, especially after noting how often the skin around the eyes is dehydrated, dull and patchy. The formula addresses this with a concentrated blend of Vitamins B3, B5, C and E to nourish the skin and even its appearance; high-performing humectants including Panthenol and Sodium Carrageenan are present too for targeted and sustained hydration, while there are soothing essential oils as well.

WHAT WE LOVE: The first thing I noticed, and loved, was the texture of the serum. Similar to facial oils, Aesop’s eye serum was a honey-coloured, viscous liquid that looks thick when out of the dropper, but actually felt lightweight and absorbed into the skin after a few light taps on the delicate eye area. I didn’t feel it on my skin, yet I knew that it was there — which helped reassure me that the rich oils and vitamin-enriched formula were slowly working their magic. After consistent use, I noticed that it helped firm some of the small fine lines under  my eye, while giving me more hydrated and refreshed skin as well. For those who dislike heavy serums or creams that tend to sit around the eye area, or are just starting out in their eye cream journey, this one’s a worthy investment.

$145 (15ml). Available at Aesop stores and aesop.com/sg.

3. Sigi Youth Beam

WHAT TO KNOW: Homegrown brand Sigi Skin just launched a powerful anti-ageing night serum, Youth Beam, and it’s the first night serum to feature a unique blend of all three biotics — prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics — to help with healthy, balanced skin and a self-resilient microbiome. Antioxidant-rich superfood ingredients are within the formula as well, including reishi mushroom, ginger root, and pine bark extracts to address various skin concerns such as reducing redness, slow down collagen breakdown, and improve skin elasticity, leaving us with skin that’s calmer and more plump.

WHAT WE LOVE: I’m already a fan of the brand, mostly because they get their skincare formulations and textures just right, everything from the retinol-alternative Dream Capsule overnight mask, to the refreshing post-cleanse feel that I love after using their Kaleanser Face Wash. If you can’t already tell, the brand’s big on naturally-derived, superfood-infused ingredients, and this Youth Beam night serum is no different.

First, the texture spreads out easily and gets quickly absorbed such that is disappears right into the skin, which is great since it doesn’t leave my skin tacky before applying moisturiser. It’s, admittedly, hard to review a serum without consistent use, but I’ve tried this every day for over a week and a half, and can vouch for how it made my skin calmer, and more supple and plump. Paired with the Dream Capsule, which I do notice instant results from, I get to wake up with awesome skin!

$99 (30ml). Available at sigiskin.com.

4. Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream

WHAT TO KNOW: Laneige’s bestselling Water Bank range has undergone a major revamp, both in looks with a seamless cuboid design, and in formula. The new Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic, in its 7th generation, boasts even better hydration and the ability to protect skin against modern external aggressors such as skin fatigue and digital dehydration, no thanks to our constant exposure to blue screens. The regime — including a serum, essence, and two kinds of moisturisers —is made to strengthen and repair the skin barrier, which keeps skin protected, while the Blue Hyaluronic Acid molecules are 2,000 times smaller than the ones previously used by the k-beauty brand. This allows for both faster absorption and better hydration within the deeper layers of our skin, ensuring that it can retain moisture much longer.

WHAT WE LOVE: You know how the weather’s been absolutely scorching lately? That’s where Laneige’s Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream comes in handy. Suitable for those with combination to oily skin, it’s of a gel texture that feels highly refreshing when applied onto my skin, and a welcome relief in our current weather. I apply this in the day, and am pleased to know that while it is a lightweight gel, it doesn’t easily evaporate and still stays on my skin to supply it with constant moisture — the texture and ingredients also help soothe and relieve signs of redness. I absolutely love its texture and ability to retain moisture, and how my skin always feels instantly plump minutes after.

$60 (50ml). available at laneige boutiques and counters, sephora, and THE LANEIGE FLAGSHIP STORE ON LAZADA AND SHOPEE.

5. Caudalie Beauty Elixir

WHAT TO KNOW: The Caudalie Beauty Elixir is a holy grail product for a reason — the all-in-one facial mist does it all, from prepping skin to setting makeup, and now boasts a new ombré packaging. Its beloved original formula stays the same, with 100% natural ingredients including rose, rosemary, lemon balm, peppermint, and grape extract, all of which help to soothe the skin and tighten pores. Misting it before makeup helps our base last even longer, while a spritz at the end of your makeup routine sets the look, as it’s packed with antioxidants to prevent makeup from oxidising as well.

WHAT WE LOVE: I can’t believe I haven’t tried this Caudalie product before, and it certainly did not disappoint. The mist does it all, as it’s a skincare product that tones skin before the other steps of your regime, can be sprayed on generously throughout the day to top up on hydration, and is a trusted aide when it comes to priming and setting makeup too. First impressions: I loved how fine the mist was, which was a big plus for me as this elevated misting to a luxurious experience; the presence of all those plant-based ingredients also meant that it smelled fresh and almost pleasantly herby, probably from the rosemary and mint. To be fair, some people might be turned off by that, or those with sensitive skin might have concerns, but it worked well for me. I’ve used it in all the scenarios I’ve described, and liked that it helped tighten pores when used on my bare skin. Over makeup, it was so light there was never any uncomfortable wetness, and offered a subtle glow while refreshing the look of my base.

$70 (100ml), $24 (30ml). Available at SEPHORA.

6. d program Allerdefense Essence SPF 50+ PA+++

WHAT TO KNOW: d program’s upgraded Allerdefense sunscreen range is now even better as it protects skin beyond just UV rays — we’ll be safe against external aggressors such as dust, fine particles and pollutants too. Each of these sunscreens boast antioxidants within their formulas, along with friction resistance for a durable shield that lasts. There’s also an anti-static electricity function to stop skin from attracting airborne particles, while any absorbed ones will be neutralised and made harmless to the skin. The Allerdefense Essence absorbs easily and is suitable for sensitive and normal skin; it’s also water- and sweat-resistant.

WHAT WE LOVE: The sunscreen already sounds good on paper, what with its all-rounded protection from both UV rays and pollution, as well as an interesting anti-static technology. I had witnessed its effects first-hand at an simple experiment that was conducted during the launch event, where they had spread dark particles over the sunscreen product; these were brushed off easily without at all sticking to the skin. Knowing that this technology would work on my skin was comforting, since I’ve been looking out for sunscreens that go beyond UV protection as well. d program’s Allerdefense Essence is a great find as it’s very lightweight and absorbs into skin without leaving a white cast, with a slightly glowy finish that’s all for dewy skin. These certainly made sunscreen application feel less like a chore.

$40.90 (40ml). Available at Watson, Shopee, Lazada and Welcia-BHG.

The Latest Star Wars Series ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Explores “A Man Broken” In A Darker, More Sinister World

Hello there. The now-iconic line uttered by Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi is no doubt the subject of countless prequel memes, but that’s where the lightheartedness ends — according to what we know about the new series at least. Simply titled, ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, the six-part limited series created exclusively for Disney+ centres around the emotional world of our titular character, as the world around him similarly falls into disarray, no thanks to the threat of Order 66.

What’s even more exciting for Star Wars fans is that both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reprise their legendary roles, as Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader, respectively. Before we share more about the upcoming series, know this: Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, 27 May, with the first two episodes. The series will then stream weekly on Wednesdays.

Here’s what we know. The storyline picks up from 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, a time when the Empire is out to hunt and kills all Jedis, viciously attempting to put an end to the Jedi Order. If that’s not ominous enough, our beloved Jedi Master is also facing his own demons, especially since we already know (not really a spoiler) of his fallout with his young padawan, Anakin Skywalker, on the hell-like landscape of Mustafar.

That said, showrunner Deborah Chow and Obi-Wan actor Ewan McGregor maintain that this one’s a “gritty and emotional character-based story”, at a global press conference conducted a week before the show’s premiere.

Chow also elaborated on where we are in the timeline, sharing that the show pays attention mostly to the aftermath of ‘Revenge of the Sith’, a significant turning point for both legacy characters. “It’s where Anakin crosses the line, and there’s no coming back,” said the director. “It’s also such a pivotal moment in history for the Jedi Order and for everyone involved, and where most of our characters made life decisions that would then set them on the course for our series.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).
Reva (Moses Ingram).

For McGregor, his return to the Star Wars universe marks a deeper exploration of a character that he had already established in the prequel trilogy. “I’ve really started thinking that there was definitely a story for Obi-Wan between the last one I did in Episode III and Alec Guinness’s Obi-Wan,” he explained. Here, the once-unwavering Jedi Master finds himself in a different emotional and spiritual state, “a man broken” by the experience of Order 66 and the fact that he’d lost his faith”, said McGregor.

Chow echoed this sentiment, with what has to be my favourite quote from the dialogue. “For Obi-Wan, he’s one of the few remaining Jedi, and many of the people that he loved are dead or gone. He’s very much alone, like a last samurai trying to uphold a code in a world that’s changing at a rapid pace — and not for the better.” The haunting image of the lone samurai is a chilling one, and very apt for a character we’ve come to love for his steadfast consistency and dutiful dedication.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).
(L-R): Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).

Where do we meet him in Obi-Wan Kenobi, and how will his moral and emotional struggle play out on the not-so-small screen? We hear from the cast and crew of the series — director and showrunner Deborah Chow, and actors Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader), and Moses Ingram (Reva) — as well as share some major points you’ll need to know before your watch party.

1. Ten years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan is a “broken” man who has lost his faith; he’s been forced to live in hiding while the Jedi are being hunted.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).

The story is set between the prequels and the original trilogy, and with Darth Vader thrown into the fray, it looks like we’re going to explore key emotional beats, especially since it’s been confirmed that the show is focused on the sinister events after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. “Ours is like a movie that just happens to be split up into these episodes,” says McGregor about the series’ in-depth storytelling and singular vision, led by showrunner Deborah Chow.

Still, both of them are eager to share that this one’s a character-driven story, one that has the time and space to deep-dive into who Obi-Wan is. How did he go from, essentially, the prequels’ version of a dedicated, unwavering Jedi hero, “somebody who’s sitting on the Jedi council” says McGregor, to the “sage-like, spiritual man” portrayed by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy? Well, consider this a detour.

“We just started with this idea that he was broken,” said McGregor, elaborating that Obi-Wan is in a very different place, both psychologically and spiritually. “He was a man broken by the experience of Order 66 and the fact that he’d lost his faith. I thought it was interesting to take him into a darker place and then over the course of the series, see how he finds his faith again and gets back to being the Obi-Wan that we knew and loved.”

The series also gives us more context about the fallout of Order 66, and anchors us to a time when the Empire is actively hunting down and ruthlessly killing all remaining Jedi. While much of this lore has been explored in other Star Wars canon, such as animated series and video games, it’s here that we see this aftermath from the very personal point-of-view of a fan-favourite character, now forced into solitary hiding.

“It’s like somebody who’s stepped away from their religion or something. The only responsibility to his past life is looking over Luke Skywalker who he’s delivered to Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, so that’s his only sort of link to his past,” said McGregor.

2. New technology, and new worlds. The series was filmed using the same immersive, high-definition LED walls pioneered by ‘The Mandalorian‘, while we get to explore a never-before-seen underground-type world, the Daiyu.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).

The phenomenal popularity of Grogu aside, The Mandalorian is an Emmy® Award-winning series best known in the industry for pioneering a new way of filmmaking. Gone are the green screens and blue screens typically used for extensive CGI work; instead, Industrial Light & Magic invented a StageCraft process of shooting in sets “surrounded by large, high-definition LED video walls” that displayed computer-generated backdrops. In other words, filmmakers get to create more believable worlds around their actors, who can then be fully immersed in them.

“I wanted to really push the technology and take it in a different direction,” said Chow, who had already been familiar with the technology during her stint for The Mandalorian. “It was also really exciting to be able to design and to develop material knowing that I was going to shoot stagecraft. A lot of times I’d be looking at the scene even as we were writing it, thinking about how is this going to translate into the volume and how can we take advantage of the tech as best as possible.”

For McGregor, it was clearly a step-up since his last time portraying Obi-Wan in the prequels. “It was such a game changer for us,” he said. “Here we were in this amazing set, where if you’re shooting in the desert, everywhere you look is the desert. And if you’re flying through space, then the stars are flying past you as you scout along. It’s so cool,” he shared.

Another exciting thing to look forward to? A new world that’s never before seen in Star Wars. The Daiyu is an underworld-like place that reminds us of the sci-fi’s best futuristic cities, Blade Runner for instance. Chow described how it has a “grittiness and energy to it, but that is sort of weird and a bit shady”.

3. On Darth Vader. There’s still “a little bit of Anakin left”, as the Vader we see here is grappling with his personal identity and his past.

Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen).
Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen).

Fans are definitely excited to see Hayden Christensen return to the Star Wars universe, as he reprises his character in the prequels, Anakin Skywalker — or should we say, Darth Vader? Yep, definitely Darth Vader, mask, red lightsaber, distorted voice and all. Then again, some of this confusion can be expected, since showrunner Chow told us that this is “not a Vader who is fully formed”.

“It’s not the Vader that’s in A New Hope. This is the character ten years before,” said Chow. “What we were trying to do was show that while he’s definitely more Vader than Anakin at this moment, there’s still a little bit of Anakin left.”

Christensen also shared about the inner turmoil of his character: “Vader’s hunting down the Jedi because they represent an opposition. It’s mandated by the Emperor but it’s also more than that — it’s personal for him. It goes back to this sort of internal struggle that Vader has with his personal identity. In trying to kill the Jedi, he is trying to kill that part of himself.”

And while we can’t wait to see this develop on our screens, here’s a more lighthearted moment where McGregor talked about what it’s like to work with Christensen on set once again. “I hadn’t seen Hayden for years.  So, when I saw him again and was able to talk about this project with him, it was very, very exciting,” he shared. “When we were acting together, it was really like some sort of time warp.  Looking across at him on set was like the last 17 years didn’t happen at all, you know.  It was really peculiar.”

4. The Inquisitors are the main antagonists of the series, recruited by the Empire to “execute Order 66” — hunt down and kill all remaining Jedi. On top of the Grand Inquisitor, we’ve also got a new character created for the series, the Third Sister, Reva.

Fifth Brother (Sung Kang, seated on right) and Reva (Moses Ingram, standing).
(L-R): Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) and Reva (Moses Ingram).

Beyond the scintillating drama set up to be explored by our returning characters, Obi-Wan Kenobi also gives us prime antagonists to hate, or perhaps love, depending on which side you’re on. Since the story centres on the execution of Order 66, we see how that plays out via the Inquisitors, enforcers recruited by the Empire and directed by Darth Vader to carry out the ruthless command.

The Grand Inquisitor, a character introduced in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, will now feature in this live-action take, played by Rupert Friend who brings the terrifying villain to life, complete with his double-bladed spinning lightsaber. Then, there’s Reva, played by Moses Ingram, the “Third Sister” Inquisitor who’s especially keen on eradicating the Jedi from the galaxy.

“She’s really smart, plays the offence,  and is always 10 steps ahead,” said Ingram of this new character. She is a subordinate of Darth Vader and she’s going to do everything she can to get the job done to the best of her ability.  I was most intrigued by just her fervour for what she does.”

Just, two things to note here. One, that Chow felt that it was important to bring an original new character into a story where “we have so many legacy characters”. Furthermore, this one’s a more complex exploration of villainy, as expressed by Ingram as well. “The darkness in her is her own pain, her own frustration, I think in other people’s weakness, because it mirrors her weakness that she had for a period of time.”

Secondly, Chow also said that it was exciting to create a dark side, female character, one that, even while on the dark side, can be inspirational to a new generation of Star Wars fans. “I remember growing up and watching certain things and with my brothers and [them going] like, you’re not strong enough, it’s for boys, you know what I mean?” Ingram elaborated. “But I think what’s cool about this is you can fight like a girl and still, you know, be badass.”

5. The lightsaber duels are better than ever, thanks to some stunning choreography. Fun fact: Ewan says “it’s impossible not to” make the now-iconic lightsaber sound effects while filming those scenes.

(L-R): Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend) and a Stormtrooper.

While the original trilogy was beloved for its expansive, triumphant, and heroic story, a high point of the prequel trilogy has to be those lightsaber fights. Who can forget the fated duel between Qui-Gon Jinn and double-bladed lightsaber-wielding Darth Maul, Yoda’s light-on-his feet dance, or the climactic one between master and padawan against the backdrop of a fiery Mustafar?

Here to surpass those tall orders are Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio, a celebrated veteran known for his work on Marvel’s Black Panther, and most recently, 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections. McGregor was, certainly, in awe of his work for the upcoming show.

“We were under the great JoJo, an amazing, thoughtful man.  He’d taken the fights that we did in the original three films and sort of studied them with his crew, his stunt crew, and developed them, so it was very thoughtful,” he shared, also adding that the fight choreography of his character and that of Ingram’ was totally different.

Said Ingram on her lightsaber training, and that steep learning curve: “We trained for about four months before we ever even got to set.  The everyday, regular strength and cardio, and then three days a week of Jedi school on top of that which, at the beginning was a little intimidating.”

Other than that, McGregor divulged how “it’s impossible not to” make lightsaber sounds while wielding them, whether in your head or otherwise, just as the actors shared that they had also played composer John Williams’ epic soundtrack on set too, to get in the mood. “We’d be, like, stepping off the ship or doing something else, and the music would swell and you’re just feeling like you’re 10 feet tall, you know. It’s very, very cool,” said Ingram.

6. A New Hope..? Despite all that darkness, Obi-Wan Kenobi has always been a character of “light and hope”; the series strives to maintain that balance.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).

Still, it’s hard to ignore that the series does delve into dark times — for both Obi-Wan, the character, and in the overall timeline of the Star Wars universe. How then, do we traverse from that to, well, A New Hope?

Showrunner Chow was candid about respecting the canon, the world established by visionaries that came before her, while also needing to have “an original story, and original vision”, which she shared was her biggest challenge.

Another challenge? Maintaining balance in the force, or, at least within the inner world of Obi-Wan. “The character of Kenobi, for me, he’s always felt like there’s so much warmth. There’s so much compassion and humour, that it is kind of a character of light and hope,” said Chow. “It was interesting for us to try to keep the balance of that, of the darkness, but also still maintaining the hope coming from the character.”

OBI-WAN KENOBI” will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, 27 May 2022, with the first two episodes. The series will then stream weekly on Wednesdays, until the finale on 22 June.

The Colgate Optic White® O2 Whitening Toothpaste Is A Worthy Addition To Your Daily Beauty Routine

Hair toss, check your nails; and a glimpse of your makeup as you’re headed out of the house too. The only thing that’s left? A set of pearly whites to accompany your smile. Now, we know that one’s oral health, like exercise and skincare, is all about daily maintenance — no shortcuts to a bright smile and clean, white teeth here — though there are some products that are more hardworking than others.

Colgate’s latest Optic White® O2 whitening toothpaste is a fine example. It contains all the necessary ingredients you’ll need in a whitening toothpaste, sure, but what gives it an extra edge is its Active Oxygen Bubble Technology, which promises to whiten teeth in just three days*.

Typically, whitening toothpastes contain active ingredients such as mild abrasives (hydrated silica, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate or aluminium oxides), or bleaching agents (safe doses of hydrogen peroxide). These work together to both remove surface stains that result in yellowing, and produce a whitening effect to teeth.

So what makes the Optic White® O2 whitening toothpaste different? It has something new — the toothpaste releases millions of ultra-fine Active Oxygen bubbles as you brush your teeth. This active ingredient is highly effective on the surface of your teeth, and also gets absorbed into the enamel, gently whitening micro stains both on the inside and out.

Some other things  you’ll need to know is that it also contains fluoride, an essential ingredient that keeps cavities at bay, while the vegan formula is safe to use daily. An Aromatic Menthol flavour also gives you that fresh, minty feeling we’ve come to love, especially great after our morning brush. Radiant smile? We’re coming for you.

OUR REVIEW

“I was definitely intrigued about how the Active Oxygen Technology would feel and work on my teeth. Activated charcoal I’ve heard of, yes, but it was the first time I’ve heard of using oxygen, which reminded me of certain facial treatments I’ve tried. On to the toothpaste though — the first difference I noticed was a mild warm sensation and a foamy sensation due to the active oxygen bubbles being slowly released. And that’s pretty much all you need to get used to!

I also have sensitive teeth and gums (usually on the lowest mode when it comes to electric toothbrushes), and am happy to report that both the formula and technology didn’t feel stinging at all. The formula’s made to be gentle on tooth enamel, which was reassuring as well.

My teeth also felt cleaner after brushing, and I was left with a refreshing and pleasant herby-minty feel on my breath after, especially great in the mornings. For its whitening effect, I did notice brighter and more radiant teeth after days of continued usage, and am excited to continue with it for the weeks ahead to see even more of a difference.”

— Amelia Tan, Deputy Editor

“On first contact with the teeth and gums, this toothpaste gives a warm feeling, and then I start to feel the bubbles… it’s subtle but it’s there. It’s like tiny air bubbles sizzling on my teeth as I brush, which is quite a fun feeling. It also makes me imagine that something is going on and it’s actually working to clean and whiten my teeth. The toothpaste’s flavour is called “Aromatic Menthol”, and it tastes extremely fresh and minty — as all toothpastes should be; plus I like that it isn’t “sweet” or overly flavoured like how many mint toothpaste flavours can get.

The toothpaste claims that it can whiten teeth in just 3 days (results may vary, of course), so I used it morning and night for 3 days together with Colgate’s Electric Toothbrush and it was amazing. My teeth actually do look brighter and they felt much cleaner. I can imagine that with constant use over time, my teeth will get whiter and I’m already looking forward to a brighter smile. I never thought I could “love” a toothpaste, but I love this one.

Who’s it for? I think it’s ideal for coffee and wine drinkers who need to scrub off stains daily. Or for those who have gone to the dental clinic to get their teeth professionally whitened — this toothpaste will maintain that whiteness for you.”

Elegant and effortless, UNIQLO’s ongoing collaboration with fashion designer Mame Kurogouchi has, once again, delivered on loungewear and innerwear that uses clean, seamless lines to accentuate feminine curves. Now in its third iteration, the Uniqlo and Mame Kurogouchi collection features even more of the global retailer’s famed AIRism and 3D Knit fabric technology, along with a new AIRism silk blend material that caresses skin and is soft to the touch.

You’ll find the innovative material across sleeveless tank tops and bra camisoles, done with a beautiful deep back detail, which function as reliable basics you can count on, both in and out of the house. An improved knit fabric also features here, across a v-neck sleeveless sweater, for instance, made to be sleek while gently gracing the figure, or a skirt with back slits that make for easy movement.

A great constant throughout the collaborations though is an earthy colour palette of white, beige, brown and black, chosen to accentuate various skin tones. These neutral hues are now updated with a slight shimmer for a subtle glowing effect. Furthermore, each of the items has been made to be an even more comfortable fit for all body types.

Other highlights include a wireless bra in a plunging design and soft cups, one with a relaxed fit and mesh details which will look sophisticated when peeking out from a top or outerwear, and ultra-thin sanitary shorts made with a triple layer structure and AIRism fabric — which makes sense since this is a collection that aims to elevate the modern woman’s lifestyle.

The Young Cast Of ‘Stranger Things’ Talk About A Darker, More Terrifying Season 4

Guess who’s back, back again. Wrong decade of reference here, but man, it’s been a long time since we stepped into the domain of the Upside Down. For some necessary context, it’s been three years since the last season aired on Netflix, Summer 2019 to be precise, so of course fans are excited for Season 4 of hit series Stranger Things.

The sci-fi thriller’s penultimate season, with the tagline “every ending has a beginning”, will debut this Friday, faster than you can say ‘demogorgon’. This upcoming season will also be released in two separate volumes — Vol. 1 will premiere on 27 May, while part two will be air on 1 July 2022.

The story picks up six months after the Battle of Starcourt, which brought major calamity to small town Hawkins, and looks at the aftermath of the incident. On top of the supernatural twists and turns, this journey is set for some emotional turmoil too, since it marks the first time we see our favourite bunch of ride-or-die friends separated; they’re off “navigating the complexities of high school” while, at the same time, dealing with loss and the rise of a new supernatural threat.

In case you need a quick refresher, here’s one where the cast recaps all the events up till Season 4:

If you’re pressed for time though, here’s a summary of the big questions we were left with after the last season’s finale episode — is Hopper alive, and if so, where in the wintry wasteland is he? What happens to Eleven’s powers, does she lose it for good or will she get it back? Where are Eleven and the Byers family moving to, and how will our crew deal with this much separation anxiety?

And then there’s everything new we saw from the series’ teasers and official trailer too, including word of a Hellfire Club, and a brief cameo from Robert Englund, the actor who plays Freddy Krueger on Nightmare on Elm Street.

Before our brains spiral out of control, we’ve got answers — well, some anyway. Fresh off the Stranger Things APAC Press Conference, we hear from the young ensemble cast, who help answer some key questions we have about the new season.

Darker, bigger, and more terrifying — that’s what we’ve been told. How is this season different from the ones before?

From the dawn of a new big bad, to just the general horror that is high school, the Duffer brothers and the cast alike have been going on about how Season 4 is Stranger Things at its most, well, scary, which should thrill those who love their 80s horror classics.

“It’s a lot darker, yeah. It’s crazy, I just watched the first two episodes, and it shocked me how crazy and scary it is,” said Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers. “Every season when we do this press I say ‘it’s so much darker, it’s so much bigger’, and it’s like the classic thing you say with Stranger Things, but this season, when I was watching I was terrified for some of the parts, so it was definitely scarier.”

Maya Hawke, who plays Robin Buckley, also adds: “It’s darker, but I think it’s also so much bigger in terms of the relationships and dynamics. There’s just so many storylines and interconnected details that it feels like the scope is huge.”

There’s a six months time jump between the Battle of Starcourt, and the first time we meet the characters again in Episode 1. What do you think happened in between?

“It’s always fun to have a bit of a time jump with each season, there’s always a good chunk of time that we don’t get to see as audience members but you figure out a lot about it in the early episodes of the show,” said Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson.

“I think primarily what we’re going through, especially for the kids, is that we’re starting high school — without a good chunk of our friend group. We miss them very much, obviously, and it’s also a very transitional time for us as we’re dealing with regular things like fitting in a new social climate, but also trying to cope with everything that has gone on.

Now that the town knows that something is up, that there was a big tragedy, with the mall burning down, these have taken a toll on people, especially those who knew what really happened, which affects some characters more than most considering who they lose and what they lose. It’s really cool to see how that unfolds through classic good old Stranger Things storytelling and dialogue!”

What is the Hellfire Club, and what do we know about new character Eddie Munson?

There’s no definite answer as of yet as to how significant this detail is, but we see those words on a t-shirt worn by Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), while, good to know, it’s also the title of the series’ first episode. What we do know is that the ‘Hellfire Club’ is the badass name of Hawkins High’s D&D club, and run by a new character called Eddie Munson, played by British actor Joseph Quinn.

At the press conference, Joseph also shares a hilarious take on his character, and how the screenwriters do their part in establishing each of the new characters. “They brilliantly take this new energy and throw it in this dense character broth, which is working and alive, and there’s something new in there,” he said. “[Eddie] is quite chaotic, he’s kind of cayenne pepper in the broth, a little bit spicy, a little bit… do I want that in there? Divisive, I guess!”

How will the show further develop fan-favourite character Erica Sinclair?

Erica Sinclair is one cool girl. The precocious kid and Lucas’ little sister, played by Priah Ferguson, delighted fans with her savvy investigative skills, and sassy comebacks — the kinds that inspire memes — so we’ll be sure to watch (and learn) from her as she progresses through the season.

“I definitely think you see Erica’s character progress, and in this season really understand her personality,” said Priah. “In season two, we kinda saw a little clip of her personality, in season three you saw that she was quick-witted and resourceful, good at math, which today some would classify as a simgirl, and in season four you really understand her personality and what she contributes to the team.”

Who, or what, is new antagonist Vecna?

The cast have been rather tight-lipped with the specifics on this one, so again, here’s what we know. It’s set to be the big bad in Hawkins, a new demo-monster that’s probably more formidable than previous Stranger Things antagonists, The Mind Flayer and the Demogorgon.

From Dungeons & Dragons lore, which the show heavily borrows from, Vecna is the name of one of the fantasy role-playing game’s most powerful and evil wizard-turned-lich. How is he linked to the Upside Down, and how will he further wreck havoc? Stay tuned to find out.

Who does horror legend Robert Englund play?

This casting choice certainly got horror fans excited — especially since we’re talking about the actor who plays the Freddy Krueger, a horror icon that’s been immortalised in countless media and Halloween costumes. In the upcoming season, Robert Englund takes on the role of Victor Creel, a new character described as “a disturbed and intimidating man who is imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital for a gruesome murder in the 1950s”. Ooh.  Foe, or unexpected friend? We’re not quite sure about this one.

Still, Maya Hawke was keen to share on her experience working with Englund: “For me, it came at a moment where I needed to be re-grounded in the show. He came in with such integrity, and investment, and care, and had done such beautiful work in his monologue, I loved to watch him act. It was a real inspiration, and made me hope that some day when I’m older and when I’m acting, I can come in with that amount of integrity and care.”

Bonus: What was it like growing up with the series?

Much like the Harry Potter franchise, we’ve seen actors such as Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp grow from awkward tweens to slightly less awkward teenagers and young adults. So, of course, the lighthearted question was posed so we get to hear how they feel about that unique experience.

“We’ve all gone through this crazy trajectory together throughout every season, and having someone that’s kind of going through the same things really helps,” says Charlie Heaton, who plays Jonathan Byers.

“It’s crazy seeing the whole gang grow up on the show,” added Gaten. “What I don’t like is seeing videos and interviews of us at that age, because it’s just a plethora of cringe!”

Mighty Jaxx Launches First Kandy x Sanrio Collection Feat. Jason Freeny’s Signature Anatomical Dissesction Design

While not all of us consider ourselves avid art toy collectors, we’ve definitely had our fair share of the blind box experience — whether as a collector silently praying for the particular design we want, or as a curious bystander watching other collectors shake the boxes like seasoned pros. If you’ve waiting for that one special collection to get started on your blind box journey though, this might be it — Mighty Jaxx’s Kandy x Sanrio collection.

Launching 25 May 2022, 10pm SGT on the Mighty Jaxx website will be the award-winning studio’s first Kandy x Sanrio series, featuring iconic Sanrio characters such as Hello Kitty and My Melody in well-known artist Jason Freeny’s signature half-finished, half-exposed designs.

For the uninitiated, Mighty Jaxx is a Singapore-based designer toys and art collectibles studio that has been making waves in the vinyl art collectibles scene with their premium art toys and blind boxes. These are often created in partnership with global artists, as well as brands that include Netflix, Warner Brothers, and DC Comics.

They also do frequent collaborations with New York-based artist Jason Freeny, who is best known for his iconic anatomical character dissections that feature a seemingly half-finished design made up of a complete half and an exposed half. Some of his popular collaborations with Mighty Jaxx include Freeny’s Hidden Dissectibles: My Little Pony and Freeny’s Hidden Dissectibles: Spongebob Squarepants.

For the Kandy x Sanrio series, the artist was inspired by candies, hence his take on six regular and popular characters — Hello Kitty, My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin, Bad Badtz-Maru, and Kerokerokeroppi, along with a rare fan-favourite character, Cinnamoroll. Each blind box is priced at USD $12.99 (approx. SGD $18) and is also available as a tray of 6 at USD $74.99 (approx. SGD $104).

The cult Sunday Bedding sheets are finally back in stock and there’s also new loungewear

A year ago, I discovered Sunday Bedding — bedsheets, duvet covers and pillowcases that are heavenly to sleep on; and the brand came along at the right time while most of Singapore was working from home and investing in small comforts like — that’s right — bedding. Sunday Bedding’s philosophy was to offer quality sheets at decent prices, and delivered to your doorstep. It was exactly what we all needed to feel better at home; to indulge in that small slice of happiness when we jump into bed at night.

If you’re new to the brand or just shopping for new sheets (and why not?), read our full story on Sunday Bedding and an interview with its co-founder here:

The story of Sunday Bedding and those sheets that keep getting sold out

It’s now a year later and the brand is not just going strong, but gaining momentum, restocking on popular styles and colours, including the Bamboo Sheet Set in Sunny White. This is really the first set to invest in; the pristine white gives off clean hotel-bed vibes, while the 100% bamboo rayon material is suitable for Singapore’s warm weather, as it’s super absorbent and will easily wick away sweat.

Above: Bamboo Sheet Set in Sunny White, from $228 for single to $332 for Super King size.

If you’re after colour, Sunday Bedding recently launched a new shade called Slate Blue; it’s a cool blue shade with a silver tinge that looks gorgeous and inviting on its own, or stylish paired with other cool tones. Get inspired by these examples:

Above: Bamboo Sheet Set in SLATE BLUE.

Sunday Bedding suggests using Slate Blue as a dark, neutral base, or play with it as an accent colour. Either way, you’re going to get bed envy from anyone who sees it.

To complement its best-selling bedding, Sunday Bedding launched its own range of loungewear in November 2021 called Sunday Loungewear. It’s the brand’s first foray into clothing, and features comfortable tops and bottoms made from end-of-roll bamboo sateen and 100% French Linen fabric sourced from Japan. We love that every piece is made ethically; they are cut and sewn by a third-generation, family-owned business in Hong Kong that is also SEDEX-certified.

There’s the Bamboo Sateen Hang Loose Button Top and Everyday Pants, that are both silky cool to the touch, and have a relaxed fit perfect for lounging at home in.

Above: The Bamboo Sateen Hang Loose Button Top ($65) and Everyday Pants ($79), in Desert rose (left) and seaglass blue (right).

There’s also the French Linen Easy Tank Top and Off-Duty Shorts, which work well as both home daywear and sleepwear. The 100% French linen is sourced from Japan and adheres to strict Japanese industrial standards. It’s also been pre-washed for added softness, and best of all, the more you wash it, the softer it gets.

This month, the brand expands its loungewear range with new styles for both men and women. There’s a new French Linen Set and Chambray Set that both include a short-sleeved button shirt and shorts; and for men, they get their own Chambray Set that comes in a long-sleeved round-collar button shirt and long drawstring pants; all of which can be styled up or down for home or casual wear. 9 of Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1 Sneakers Will Be Launching In June

Sneakerheads and those into high fashion tie-ups won’t want to miss this — luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton just announced that their highly-anticipated Nike ”Air Force 1” collection, designed by the late Virgil Abloh, will be out in stores this June.

The world first set eyes on the collection earlier on the runway of Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2022 Men’s Collection, where we learnt that a total of 47 bespoke editions of the Louis Vuitton x Nike collaboration were created by the designer.

This time, we’ll be getting 9 editions of the sneaker, including two mid-cut offerings (€2,500) and seven low-top styles (€2,000). These will be launched globally via an inclusive digital activation, while members of the LV’s community will be offered early access to pre-order the shoes.

Now, let’s talk design. All of the sneakers are manufactured at Louis Vuitton’s atelier in Venice, Italy, where each design combines the most recognisable “Air Force 1” codes from Nike’s cult-favourite shoes with the maison’s finest leather and signature LV insignia. You’ll find Abloh’s iconic detailing present as well, most particularly his favourite air-quotes on the word “Lacet” on the shoelaces and “Air” on the soles.

The most minimalist of the designs are all-white leather sneakers, in both mid-cut and low-cut versions, which come embossed with the Louis Vuitton Monogram; the same design is available in black suede. Two-tone editions in white paired with green, red, or blue detailing also exist, while these are some bolder designs that see a metallic gold, one with multi-colour patchwork, and a Damier edition that bears a graffiti motif by the artist Ghusto Leone.

On top of the sneakers’ launch, there will also be an exhibition in New York City where fans will get to see all 47 editions of Abloh’s “Air Force 1” shoes on display. Held from 20 – 31 May, it will be held at the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse in New York City, with the exhibition space turning into a surrealist landscape of clouds and a fantastical treehouse that pays tribute to the creator’s imagination, as well as his show sets and campaign imagery.

Take a look at all 9 pairs of sneakers here.

Lazy Oaf Updates Their Lifestyle Collection With Even More Items For The Home

You either know about Lazy Oaf — and love them — or you’ve just never heard of the brand. There’s no in between. The quirky British design-led label was founded by Gemma Shiel in 2001, from humble beginnings as a stall in East London to the stylised, independent establishment it is now.

Since those early days, Lazy Oaf has gone on to attract dizzying affection from, well, hipsters and creatives alike, and are all about trend-less wear before forsaking trends became cool. Their attire often mixes up youthful streetwear with heavy doses of nostalgia, particularly referencing the 90s and 00s for fun-loving outfits — so, of course, their lifestyle series follows suit too.

From sold-out throws and blankets to tea towels, cushions, and drinkware, you can say that Lazy Oaf’s series of home items are made for oafing around. Love being a homebody and spending weekends lounging around the house? They’ve got you. These don’t really elevate; rather, many of them come with prints, cute characters, and smiley faces — especially those signature happy sad faces — where these little touches instantly lift the mood of a space.

And while we’re still refreshing the website every so often, in case the Checkerboard Happy Sad Blanket ever comes back in stock, you’re free to add all these other eccentric homeware to your cart.

Jo Malone London Dives Into Aquatic Scents For Their Latest Brit Collection

You’ll want to take a deep breath here. Inspired by ‘wild swimming’, Jo Malone London‘s latest series of scents invites you to explore the natural beauty of the British Isles, with five limited-edition aquatic scents that take us from the crystal-clear waters of a secluded cove, to the salty waves crashing on a sandy shore. And every one of them sound just as dreamy too.

“Wild swimming has a truly universal appeal, and, particularly in our current times, offers just about everyone an accessible experience of freedom in nature. That’s something we were all inspired by and tried to celebrate in this collection,” says Céline Roux, the fragrance house’s Global Head of Fragrance.

The scent story was created together with celebrated perfumers Anne Flipo and Delphine Lebeau, with new fragrance Crystal Champion being the first scent they came up with, meant to conjure up fairytale imagery of a cascading waterfall that flows into a clear-water cove.

“It was all about transparency and clarity with light floral touches,” she elaborates, stating notes of davana, blackcurrant, woven with a campion flower accord and base of ambroxan. Clearly, light and transparent scents are having a moment, and we can’t help but fawn over this one. A Hydrating Face Mist, scented with Crystal Campion, is also available as part of the limited edition collection.

Then again, the other scents such as Salty Amber, a more sensual piece, and Forest Moss, with a warm and woody appeal, capture the more moody qualities of the British Isles. The former contrasts between “the turbulent energy of the waves and the sea’s depth and power”, says Delphine, with spicy cardamom at the top, above an aromatic layer of myrtle and clary sage, followed by amber and seaweed for a sensual drydown.

For Forest Moss, expect a woody fragrance layered with juniper, peppermint, geranium and lavender, atop a base of moss and patchouli, which aims to mimic the sights and smells of a trek alongside a secluded river in the woods.

Aqua Lemon is also unique — in fact, this one’s inspired by British open-air public pools, a man-made environment instead of a natural one. The easy-to-wear fragrance blends a refreshing and citrusy mandarin with energising spearmint, cedarwood and amber, for the feel of diving into an open-air pool in the morning.

The collection is then complete with fan-favourite scent, Wood Sage & Sea Salt, which layers perfectly with each of the four new scents. Recalling the lingering smell of sea salt and rugged cliffs along the coast, it’s a woody, warm scent lifted by the fresh note of sea salt. This key Jo Malone London scent is available in 30ml and 100ml Colognes, and a special-edition Home Candle.

JO MALONE LONDON – Brit Collection 2022.
$118 (30ml) for each of the Colognes; $230 (100ml) for the Special-Edition Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne; $118 for the Home Candle; and $56 (45ml) for the Crystal Champion Hydrating Face Mist.
Available from 18 May 2022 at all Jo Malone London stores, selected Sephora outlets, and via the Jo Malone London Concierge Service.

M.A.C Just Dropped A ‘Stranger Things’ Makeup Collection And It’s Totally Wicked

Cue ominous music. Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things will soon be back on our screens this May, and thankfully, we’ve got an accompanying makeup collection that’ll have us looking absolutely rad, both in the real world and the Upside Down.

With eyeshadow palettes, liquid lipsticks, and a blush, there are, of course, two sides to this line-up — a fun one that takes us on a nostalgic trip back to the 80s, the class of 1986 to be precise, and another that captures the eerie dimension of the Upside Down, with goth-like makeup to match. Willlll you be able to resist?

Let’s get right to it then. The highlight of of M.A.C’s new collection has to be those eyeshadow palettes. The Human World collection, as it’s dubbed, features one called the ‘Hawkins Class of 1986’, and is characterised by bright colours of blues, pinks, and purples that recall the era of the suburban mall. Its packaging also reflects something you’ll see at a typical American high school, mascot motifs and all.

On the other hand, the Upside Down palette does justice to serious Demogorgon and Mind Flayer vibes, from the creeping veins on its outer packaging, to the choice of shades such as metallic green, a dark blue, and matte black.

Similarly, both the Powder Blushes and Lipglasses, M.A.C’s take on high-shine liquid lipsticks, complement those colour codes and design choices as well. Choose from either a soft pink blush or a more daring vintage-wash burnt red that diffuses nicely across the cheeks, or Lipglasses that range from a light coral and cool-kid bright fuchsia, to acid green, bright red, and black. An eyeshadow brush and powder brush are available as well.

The M.A.C X STRANGER THINGS Collection will be exclusively available on sephora.sg from 19 May 2022.

The Louis Vuitton Bubblegram Is A Fun Collection Of Puffy Quilted Bags

Remember when we said padded, pillowy bags were in vogue? That was 2019, in the early days of Bottega’s Padded Cassette, and it’s a trend that’s here to stay, according to this fun collection. Louis Vuitton presents Bubblegram, a quirky and youthful line of bags that go big on round, bubble-like curves, and their iconic monogram done in soft, pillowy styles we just want to hug.

If the campaign images are anything to go by, this one looks to be a collection targeted at Gen Zs and the Tik Tok generation. No shade here. After all, the social media platform has been dictating today’s trends for quite a while now, and we can see how a 2000s-era puffy baguette bag would absolutely take off.

LV is banking on four models for the Bubblegram bag series — Over The Moon, a crescent design; Papillon, a sporty-looking duffel bag shape; their signature art deco-inspired Alma BB; and a compact Wallet on Strap. These are available in vibrant shades of Ice Blue, Dragon Fruit, Banana, Snow and Black.

And since we’re paying a pretty penny for Louis Vuitton, we do expect fine craftsmanship as well. Rest assured, Louis Vuitton ateliers have used brand new design techniques for these designs in order to create that supple, bouncy quilted effect, where the Monogram is embroidered on shiny calfskin leather.

In fact, more than 15,000 stitches are needed to embroider the Alma BB bag. Each style is also hand-finished, especially since the seams require precise positioning.

The fashion house has also given us plenty of ways to wear the Bubblegram bags. A chain strap has been added to the Over the Moon and Papillon models, along with a nylon shoulder strap, for versatility either over the shoulder or on the wrist.

You may opt to carry the Alma BB by its rolled-leather top handles, a design detail made to complement the puffy leather aesthetic, or equip it with the crossbody strap if you’re going hands-free.
