Review: This Upgraded Soothing Scalp Repair Treatment Solves 6 Types Of Hair & Scalp Woes

If you’re starting to notice thinning hair, breakage, dandruff or the dreaded but common woe of hair loss, know that these issues may not necessarily be caused by ageing — that is, young people are just as susceptible to them too. Thankfully, we know at least one universal solution, and it has to do with maintaining a healthy scalp.

Though often neglected,  a healthy scalp often leads to healthy-looking tresses too, since it’s the place where our hair follicles lie; it’s essential that the follicles are kept clean and clear, unobstructed by dead skin or sebum, so that hair strands have room to grow and thrive. Scalp disorders such as dandruff, an itchy scalp, or a sensitive one may affect the way it absorbs nutrients, thereby affecting hair growth and health too.

At PHS HAIRSCIENCE, a team of bioscientists, trichologists, and dermatologists have developed just the treatment to treat common disorders such as dandruff, scalp oiliness or dryness and sensitivity. The H2 Advance Scalp Repair Treatment is a multi-step process that involves a professional scalp deep-cleanse, along with molecular hydrogen, super antioxidants, and a high concentration of botanical extracts, in order to boost cellular repair and restore scalp health, all possible in just 90 minutes.

There are six types of targeted treatments available, tailor-made to your scalp condition and concerns. They are for: Dandruff Clear, Dry Scalp, Sensitive Scalp, Oily & Acne Prone Scalp, Combination Scalp, and Anti-Ageing. Any one of the above helps calm and soothe the scalp, so you get immediate relief from inflammation and irritation, and further protects and restores the scalp to its optimal state.

What’s also new is that PHS HAIRSCIENCE have upgraded their treatments with a Hydrogen Care treatment. This upgrade, done via their specialised machine, lets Hydrogen penetrate deeply to purify follicle cells, while also ensuring that their proprietary haircare ampoule is brought directly into the scalp for even more effectiveness.

Ahead, we share more about our experience with the H2 Advance Scalp Repair Treatment:

PART 1: CONSULTATION

The scalp treatment session starts off with a personal consultation with your therapist, where a professional provided a thorough examination of my current scalp condition. Verdict: it was not great. It’s obvious that I had long neglected my scalp health, which led to product build-up, dry flakes, and a lot of “cloudiness” where it was difficult to see my hair follicles.

It was also helpful to learn what a healthy scalp looks like — my therapist informed me that an ideal healthy scalp has about two to three strands of thick hair peeking out from each hair follicle. While my hair appeared healthy, in that they were still thick and plentiful, there were parts where the follicles had started to shrink, resulting in thinning hair strands; a potential problem down the line.

For my particular scalp condition though, I was recommended the Dandruff Clear targeted treatment, which deals with dandruff, dry scalp, as well as hair loss.

PART 2: DEEP CLEANSING

double cleanse
Image: PHS HAIRSCIENCE.

Every good treatment starts with a hair wash, and everyone can attest to how pampered you feel when receiving a salon-quality wash, relaxing head massage and all. For my scalp treatment, the shampoo used was targeted for my particular hair concern, and follows PHS HAIRSCIENCE’s recommended ADV Purify Daily Regime, for an effective double cleanse.

My hair was first washed with the ADV Nutrition Shampoo that deeply cleanses and hydrates, followed by the ADV Purify Shampoo that focused on removing dandruff flakes; both gave a nice, cooling effect.

hydro-cleanse

The scalp treatment then went one step further with the hydro-cleansing step. Still at the hair wash basin, this was when my scalp was treated to a high-pressure water jet, that made sure any excess sebum or unwanted debris and impurities on the surface of the scalp were thoroughly washed off. It was painless, and honestly quite relaxing, though you can always the therapist to tailor the pressure according to your preference.

aqua peel

Our final cleansing step had me seated at the salon chair for an Aqua Peel, which further gets rid of dead skin cells that may still be stuck among my hair even after a thorough cleanse. It’s a step that’s impossible to do at home without the help of someone else — here, the therapist had to part sections of my hair in order to really zone in the dry flakes and dead skin, and used a vacuum-like machine to extract dirt and other impurities.

PART 3: INTENSE TREATMENTS

hair mask

With the most thorough cleanse my scalp can get, it’s ready to be nourished and revitalised. The next step of the treatment involved a hair mask that was spread onto the top of my head, gently massaged in, and then left in for about 15 minutes for my scalp to soak up its soothing benefits. This was combined with an M1 Infra Red machine, which uses infrared light to help the treatment penetrate deeper into the scalp.

new: Hydrogen Care treatment

This new step has been added to PHS HAIRSCIENCE’s already popular Advance Scalp Repair Treatment, since the experts found it a worthy extra step to include for its multitude of benefits.

Using a spray-like device on a specialised hydrogen care machine, it delivers hydrogen to the deep levels of scalp skin, which then allows for two major things to happen — first, the cells are purified which helps reduce oxidative damage and strengthen scalp immunity; secondly, it improves blood circulation that then helps deliver important nutrients to the hair bulb.

While all this may sound a little more complicated, what I felt while on the salon chair was simply a refreshing sensation, where it felt like cooling air was being jetted onto my head.

new: h2 cell repair Ampoule

Also part of the new and improved treatment, the H2 Advance Scalp Repair Treatment features this proprietary H2 Cell Repair Ampoule, meant to be used together with the hydrogen care machine. Much like a skincare ampoule contains a high concentration of active ingredients, this too is a potent blend for your hair, where hydrogen, antioxidants, plant stem cells, and botanical extracts speed up cell repair, all for the sake of healthy follicle cells.

During the treatment, the ampoule was loaded into another specialised spray-like tool for optimal delivery. The therapist sectioned my hair into different parts, in order to deliver the ampoule right into my scalp, and again, this was a relaxing airy sensation that didn’t at all feel stressful. A welcome botanical scent from the formula also wafted through the air, creating quite a pleasant experience.

BONUS: A SALON-WORTHY BLOW-DRY

This certainly was a first — once everything was done, I received a complimentary blow-dry where my therapist styled and curled my hair so it looked even more perfect when I stepped out of the salon!

THE RESULTS!

Perhaps the best way to determine how effective the scalp treatment was, would be to compare the before and after results, and as you can see, it made a whole lot of difference to the condition of my scalp. Where at first my scalp was dry and flaky, post-treatment, it looked a lot clearer and cleaner after, with less congested hair follicles.

I also felt that it was way more refreshed and less irritated, which are results that I would never be able to recreate at home even with my own hair scrubs and exfoliators, not without the professional, targeted treatments that the PHS HAIRSCIENCE therapists provided.

With such instant soothing and cleansing benefits, as well as knowing how nourished my scalp probably is right now given the multi-step process it was put through, this is a treatment I’d highly recommend if you’re looking for an effective solution to scalp issues, and a head of healthy, shiny, and voluminous hair.

We’re getting coffee capsules dressed in gorgeous limited edition designs, in a ‘Gifts of the Forest’ collection that takes inspiration from our precious environment. These are brought to life by Colombian fashion designer Johanna Ortiz, with coffees for both the Original and Vertuo systems.

When designing the collection, I took the idea of capturing the beauty of the forest throughout every piece, by incorporating rich forest canopies and dark earthy tones within my designs,” says Ortiz. Her enchanting designs highlight Nespresso’s connections with nature and sustainability, where you might be pleased to know that the brand’s committed to helping protect 10 million trees in the Amazon.

Of the three limited-edition coffee capsules, Forest Black is a spicy espresso of exotic woody notes, Forest Fruit Flavour combines berry aromas with smooth cereal notes, and Forest Almond Flavour accentuates everyone’s favourite sweet, nutty aromas, characteristic of Latin American and African arabicas.

A New Swatch x You Collection Features Snoopy And The Peanuts Gang On Watches You Can Customise

Snuggle up to a cosy collection by Swatch, who have rounded up the Peanuts gang, once again, in their latest holiday collaboration. Adding on to the existing line of six watches, launched earlier in November, this new drop allows you to create your own personalised Swatch X You watches with three digital designs that feature the lovable, enduring characters of Charles M. Schulz, most notably pop culture icons such as Snoopy, Woodstock, and good ol’ Charlie Brown.

Here’s a look at both collections —

NEW: Swatch X You — Peanuts edition

Similar to their National Day launch this year, Swatch X You is an innovative concept that invites you to create your own customised timepiece. Over at the Swatch website, you get to select a section of the canvas you’d like to feature on the watch, by moving left, right, up, down, or even rotating the canvas so your favourite elements fall within the watch template.

You may also select your choice of mechanism and indexes, or add a personal message on the back of the case, before picking it up at the Swatch store or having your watch delivered to your home.

For Swatch x Peanuts, the brand has specially commissioned digital works that celebrate Snoopy and the Peanuts gang, of three joyful canvases that bring out the imaginative spirit of the original comic strips.

A fun design that sees the Peanuts gang in many amusing scenarios — including Lucy balancing Woodstock on top of her head, Linus and his trusty blanket, Charlie Brown asleep, Snoopy on top of a stepladder, and more.
Featuring Snoopy and his little yellow sidekick, Woodstock, the canvas is split into four vertical parts — two monochrome sections feature Snoopy in various sleeping and standing states, while the others see Woodstock and pops of yellow.
Four colourful sections of Snoopy and friends, with the ‘time is what you make of it’ text bubble as a playful nod too.
Swatch X you special edition peanuts digital designs, $186 per watch. available ONLINE for a limited time only.

DROP 1: Swatch x Peanuts

An earlier drop in November sees the Peanuts characters all over classic Gent and New Gent Swatch models, which take plenty of inspiration from original Peanuts comic strips. For the six designs in this Swatch x Peanuts collection, you’ve got bright colours and witty details those familiar with the watch brand would love to discover — a baseball and catcher glove can be found on the First Base watch hands, for instance.

The Peanuts logo is seen across the loops of the silicone bracelet watches as well, while their glass and cases are made from biosourced materials, surely a nod to their commitment towards sustainability.

L – R: First Base ($149), Smak! ($149), Grande Bracchetto ($127).
L – R: Pow Wow ($149), HeeHeeHee ($149), Klunk! ($127).

If you like to see the Peanuts crew all huddled together, go for Smak!, a retro-style New Gent watch that features a complete comic strip from the 60s; First Base, on the other hand, gathers the gang together with a cute homage to your friendly neighbourhood baseball team.

Fans of Lucy’s spunky personality would like Klunk!, a dynamic design in red and blue, while Charlie Brown’s also given his own design in a yellow-themed piece that showcases his many mishaps and guises. Of course, popular character Snoopy gets his own watches too — Grande Bracchetto captures his many alter egos, while HeeHeeHee is a more minimalist blue design that also features a puzzled Woodstock.

See the full collection here —

5 Spoiler-Free Things To Know About Marvel’s ‘Hawkeye’ Series

For Marvel fans who’ve long felt that their favourite arrow-slinging Avenger had been sidelined throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) journey thus far, we’re now getting an entire six-part original series dedicated to the overachieving Clint Barton.

No, seriously, if you need a battle statistic to back how truly an ‘MVP’ he is, consider this Reddit post: “The Avengers are 7-0 in battles that include Hawkeye. They are 0-4 in battles either against him or without him.” This, from a guy with neither cosmic powers nor a drop of super soldier serum. Enough said, he’ll take a bow now.

Played by Jeremy Renner, who described his broody character as having a “veneer of grumpiness in this resting face” during a recent Hawkeye press conference ahead of the show’s premiere, Hawkeye, the original Avenger, is back to grace our screens, and debuts 24 November (Wednesday) on streaming platform Disney+.

While we can’t argue with Renner’s fitting description of his character, we’d go for a different take; he’s pragmatic, to the point, and if we recall the iconic scene in Sokovia with Wanda right, low-key inspiring. Set in post-blip New York City, it’s about time we got to dwell on, and delve more into the original Avenger — who’s probably the most relatable as well.

“Clint Barton is one of the original six Avengers—and everyone aside from Clint and Natasha has super powers,” said Renner. “That alone establishes a kind of everyman quality, but then you throw in the fact that he has family and changes diapers all while slinging arrows, and I think it redefines what a Super Hero can be.”

(L-R): Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in Marvel Studios’ HAWKEYE. Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. ©Marvel Studios 2021.

The Hawkeye series also sees the debut of fan-favourite character Kate Bishop, a 22 year-old young woman and fellow skilled archer, played by Hailee Steinfeld. The actress told us that Hawkeye is “someone she [Kate] has idolised her whole life”, much to the disdain of his solo-laner tendencies. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances though, they end up reluctantly teamed up to thwart criminal forces, establishing a new partnership which, we’re told, brings a whole new energy to the show.

Renner described how Kate Bishop presents plenty of “lightness and brightness” in Hawkeye’s journey, even while he’s still dealing with some post-Endgame grief. “It has a buddy-cop feel; a mentor thing; beautiful, intimate shared experiences. It’s really touching and funny and I think it’s a really dynamic relationship, and I’m excited to see it all,” he said.

And apart from the continuous car shot-level action scene that was perfectly executed in the trailer, what most surprised us about the series was how Hawkeye’s ultimate mission was described: “to get back to his family for Christmas”. A little tongue-in-cheek humour from Marvel Studios, yes, especially when fans have noted how this is the second time — since Iron Man 3 — that we’re seeing a holiday feature.

Might we get a Die Hard meets the MCU kind of feel? President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, acknowledges that this is a “fun, grounded, action-Christmas series” that stands on its own compared to the others before it, noting the otherworldliness of Loki, geopolitical themes of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, and the ode to sitcoms and grief that is WandaVision.

He continued: “It was fun, and a breath of fresh air, after world-ending stakes, and celestials bursting out of planets, and multiverse shenanigans — which makes this, like Hawkeye himself, a grounded, family-based show.”

Ahead, we hear from the show’s leads Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, as well as Kevin Feige and director Rhys Thomas on what, we suppose, could be Marvel’s unofficial holiday special.

1. It’s Christmas in New York!

six episodes, six days. and a little irony.

Jeremy Renner (JR): “There’s an emotional through line that ties in from Endgame, but we start off with a very happy step forward into a family vacation in New York at Christmas, taking the kids to go see a musical — and then everything kinda goes sideways from there.”

Rhys Thomas (RT): “I think the story of a character like Clint just trying to live his life and trouble coming to find him, it’s a trope that we all love and enjoy. And setting it at Christmas time, that clash of family time with business time, it’s a classic combo.

Kevin Feige (KF): “I’ve always loved films or shows that take place over the holiday season. I think there’s a heightened amount of emotion and a heightened amount of conflict and tension that can occur, in this glorious season, and have always, honestly, been looking for opportunities.”

It’s also shot on location — right in new york.

RT: “New York’s very special to me. I think I was kind of a tyrant about being as true to New York as we could. Nothing bugs me more than fake geography in movies, so I think it was a given that we had to go there. It’s Christmas time in New York too. You want that real texture. Plus, we’ve got very human characters in the show as well, so I think anywhere that’s of a real-world feel can breathe through the show, we had to take it.”

2. The Hawkeye series introduces Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld.

a young woman and a skilled archer — and a fan-favourite from the comics.

Hailee Steinfeld (HS): “I really do feel like playing this character, it sort of forced me to find a confidence and a determination and discipline that’s always been inside of me, but I really had to bring it out of myself to do this character justice. I feel so lucky to be playing a character that is so loved by so many and that people have been waiting for some time to see brought to life.”

on how kate bishop compares to gwen stacey (spider-man: into the spider-verse), also played by hailee.

HS: “They’re very different; in two completely different worlds. But the characters that I have played in the past do have this sort of consistency in being these young women who are strong-minded, have a point of view, have an idea of who they are in this world. Both Gwen Stacy and Kate Bishop are proof that if you set your mind to something, you can really achieve great things.”

3. Look out for the dynamic between Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, where Hawkeye is ‘set up’ to be a mentor for Hailee’s character.

Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. © Marvel Studios 2021. All Rights Reserved.

JR: “You set up characters that could be polar opposites in a lot of ways, but then they have a lot of congruent, values and belief systems and skill sets. It’s a wonderfully complicated relationship, or friendship, or partnership. You can put all sorts of labels on it, and I think you can put these two characters in various different scenarios, and it’s gonna be a winning scenario. It has a buddy-cop feel; a mentor thing; beautiful, intimate shared experiences. It’s really touching and funny and I think it’s a really dynamic relationship, and I’m excited to see it all.”

HS: “It was very fun, sort of, figuring out as we were going the evolution of this dynamic in this relationship, and I think, ultimately, there’s a really true friendship there and an understanding. Kate sees Clint as someone who wants to do good and help people, despite his past, and that’s all she wants to do in life, and she’s inspired by him and wants to be at his level and is very over-eager, and he puts up with a lot. But she really delivers at the end of the day.”

4. The six-part series is heavily inspired by the beloved Matt Fraction and David Aja comic series.

Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. ©Marvel Studios 2021.
Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. ©Marvel Studios 2021.

RT: “Early on, talk was about a specific tone that that the Fraction run had, that was a real linchpin. It’s funny and also intimate in this amazing character study. It just handles these elements so well that there were just lots of moments that felt kinda too good not to reference and touch on, because it really defines these guys and their relationship.”

KF: “It was a big tonal inspiration for us. There are moments within all ofJeremy’s appearances where you see this mentor under the surface. This reluctant hero. One of my favourite scenes in all of our films is the scene with Clint and Wanda in Sokovia, when he basically says, you go out that door, you’re an Avenger, and motivates her to join the fight. That was the kernel of how we could connect our MCU incarnation of Clint Barton into the Matt Fraction storyline and the relationship with Kate Bishop.”

5. We’ll see even more of “family guy” Clint Barton — as well as how the hero deals with a post-Endgame reality.

Photo by Mary Cybulski. © Marvel Studios 2021.

JR: “I suppose it was survivor guilt outside just dealing with the loss. It’s addressed in the show, which I think is beautifully intimate. It brings our characters closer together, as well as the audience. There’s a lot of weight that’s carried, you know. There might be a veneer of grumpiness in this resting face in the show, but it ultimately comes from just the weight and the horrors, and the tragedies and loss, that come with the superhero game. The lightness and brightness that Hailee’s character brings in, it kinda counteracts that gets it to level out some. So, it’s pretty cathartic, and I think quite beautiful.”

on clint, the father.

JR: “It’s one of the more important anchors. These inform me, and even the audience, what Clint’s real superpower is. And it comes in amalgamation of all these amazing, very practical, ultimately very palatable and accessible morality, or actionability. I’ve always thought, look, there’s him being a father. Any amazing parent is a superhero in their own right; it is a tremendous honour and a gift, and the most difficult thing any human can go through. There’s a wonderful pragmatic-ness to it. And I think it really is the base to where all of his emotional steadfastness and actionability and relatability are for him and what his superpowers are.”

Y2K’s Beaded Phone Strap Is Making A Glorious Comeback As This Season’s ‘It’ Accessory

The Y2K trend is well and alive with yet another pop culture resurgence — and this time it has nothing to do with bucket hats, platform flip-flops or the Balenciaga City Bag. Surprisingly enough, the latest fashion revival has to do with beaded phone straps, attached to the sides of our high-tech smartphones. How’s that for kitsch?

Call us charmed; featuring nostalgic candy-coloured plastic beads, clay ones, or even high-end crystals that glitter under the right light, this 13-going-on-30 trend has been catching on among fashion’s most influential set. The beaded accessories of celeb-favourite indie brand String Ting, for instance, have been spotted on everyone from Dua Lipa and Kendall Jenner, to popular South Korean influencer Irene Kim, who’ve been flaunting them in their latest mirror selfies, which we’re 100% here for.

Certainly, the irony of splicing together today’s top-of-the-line technology and, well, plastic beads, a reminder of simpler times, is not lost on us. A revival of early-2000s, Paris Hilton-era bedazzled flip phones, perhaps? Or simply an evolution of the numerous home D-I-Y projects we’ve been keeping ourselves busy with since the start of sanctioned lockdowns? No one’s quite sure, except that we’re undoubtedly enamoured.

The phone charm is also meant to be practical, yes, but only marginally so. When fastened to the side of your phone case, you’re free to sling it across your wrist while on the move, or dangle your phone from your fingers, which makes for a rather precarious predicament in our opinion.

Above: Jolly Rancher Crystal Wristlet Phone Strap, £150

It might be easier to think of this as modern-day accessorising — the phone strap’s essentially jewellery for your smartphone. With “casual” mirror selfies currently a thing on the ‘gram, and with our smartphones permanently attached to our being, one way or another, you don’t want to just be sporting a ubiquitous black case.

From subtle pearls to the most brilliant of beads, protective evil eyes or chunky heart charms, these phone straps offer us yet another way to show off our personality through our devices, which makes for quite the sweet (sweet) fantasy indeed.

Ahead, we suss out some of the best beaded phone straps in the market.

The Stella McCartney x The Beatles Capsule Pieces Celebrate The Band’s Iconic Discography

The British invasion is upon us once again with this gem of a collection — designer Stella McCartney has joined forces with The Beatles, one of the most legendary bands in the world, for a genderless fashion collection that celebrates pop culture at its best. All you need is love… and a vintage-inspired t-shirt it seems.

Timed to complement the launch of Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back documentary on Disney+, the 12-piece capsule debuted over the weekend at NET-A-PORTER, offering plenty of graphic prints and psychedelic colours inspired by some of The Beatles’ most iconic albums.

A particularly vibrant t-shirt sports Dutch design collective The Fool’s psychedelic art on the front and a Beatles record cover at the back, while tie-dye is seen on a t-shirt and hoodie. Then, a pink-rimmed sweater pays tribute to the psychedelic landscape painting The Beatles originally commissioned for their Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, while another varsity-style bomber sees the album’s badge displayed on glossy satin.

In a more subtle twist, a black-and-white coat and track pants are intarsia-knitted with the Fab Four’s faces, along with ‘Get Back’ — which references both the 1969 single and original working title of Let It Be. There are obviously lots of little homages to the band peppered throughout the collection, for you to discover, which makes for a most sincere collaboration.

Review: Danish Pastry Cafe Leckerbaer Has A New Flagship Outlet At Keong Saik

For fans of Copenhagen-based confectionery Leckerbaer and their dainty, bite-sized desserts, things are about to get more quaint. Their popular Danish butter cookies, or småkagers, can now be found in a serene shophouse space at Keong Saik, their second outlet since the first one at Orchard.

You won’t be needing to book a flight to Denmark for a cosy hygge experience. The new locale, and the official flagship outlet, is every bit as Scandinavian-inspired as you’d imagine — think, light wood furniture and white walls, rattan chairs, and a minimalist setting that lets their bakes stand out. It also boasts a more spacious interior compared to the first outlet, which lets in lots of natural light within the charming space, making it a haven for teatime catch-ups and afternoon breaks.

At Keong Saik, we were also privy to Leckerbaer’s new festive flavours, along with a menu of small bakes and open-faced sandwiches. Ahead, we look at some of the menu highlights.

THE SMÅKAGER

To keep things fresh, Leckerbaer constantly updates their menu of desserts so we’ll never get bored; this current rotation takes us through classic festive flavours, made to be every bit a feast for the eyes as well. Eight new småkagers are now available, and in general, these blend together chocolate, seasonal mint and cinnamon, and plenty of bright, fruity flavours that bring a dreamy balance to the pastries.

A spice cake-inspired Chocolate consists of a brownie base that contrasts nicely against the more tart flavours of calamansi and blackcurrant, while Passionfruit is an almond financier piped with blackberry and passionfruit curd, complete with a meringue flower on the top. Also enjoyable was Hazelnut, where the fragrant cinnamon cake certainly came through, while the bite-sized piece comes decorated with piped lemon meringue and chocolate shards.

Left: Chocolate, Vanilla, Passionfruit, Hazelnut, Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Tart, Almond & Cherry.

Leckerbaer’s hand-crafted butter cookies deserve a mention too, and these aren’t plain at all — Milk presents two chocolate cookies that surround a layer of mint buttercream, then dusted with red berry powder, while Ruby Chocolate is dipped in a pink glaze with cherry jam in the centre of its ringed shape.

Elsewhere, a Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Tart ($8.50) goes big on cocoa with a chocolate shell, dense chocolate brownie, and a delicate dark chocolate hazelnut namelaka that’s sure to delight chocolate lovers; still, a layer of cherry curd cuts through the flavour, ensuring you still enjoy each subsequent bite.

Each småkager is priced at $2.80 per piece, or available in boxes, starting from $22 for 8 pieces. As part of the festive season, you may also indulge in two Christmas Sets ($34 each) that either pair eight småkagers and two beverages of choice, or two small bakes, four småkagers and two beverages of choice.

THE SAVOURIES

With a more spacious setting, and more time to savour a cup of tea or two, Leckerbaer is introducing flagship-exclusive open-faced sourdough sandwiches as well. Classic with a twist, the Smoked Salmon and Onsen Egg ($21) combines strips of smoked Norwegian salmon, zucchini, pickled onions and peppery mizuna on cream cheese, which is then topped with a suitably runny onsen egg on top. Its flavours are bound to be well-loved, all smokey, hearty and comforting at once.

Left: Crab & Avocado Salsa ($20). Right: Smoked Salmon and Onsen Egg ($21).

For one that’s fresher on the palate, go for the Crab & Avocado Salsa ($20), their version of the millennial-favourite avocado toast. Still, this one’s more hearty than most, and is topped with generous shreds of Jonah crab meat atop a creamy avocado salsa that has hints of spice and citrus notes.

Review: Polaroid’s newest creative instant camera, the Polaroid Now+

Polaroid has taken one of their most popular classic instant cameras, the Now, and upgraded it with Bluetooth connectivity, which connects to Polaroid’s app. It’s called the Now+ and looks and feels exactly like the Now, but costs a bit more and allows the user to get really creative through various settings on the app. And while the Now is available in a rainbow spectrum of colours, the Now+ only comes in black (featured here), white and blue.

Above: The POLAROID NOW+ in black + Color i-type film (black frame).

The Now+ has a smooth, rounded shape, which makes it appear more modern. It’s obviously very nice, but I personally prefer the more squarish shape of the Polaroid OneStep that is based off the original camera from the 70s, and has a retro look and feel. Click here for a good comparison between the Polaroid Now and OneStep cameras.

Above: lens cap and filters included in the box.

There are some fun things in the box: a protective lens cap (which I once forgot to remove before a shoot, and wasted two pieces of film), a charging cable (the camera has a USB-rechargable battery), and a pouch with 5 filters.

Above: there’s usb-charging and a tripod mount at the base.

The camera has an in-built flash that can be disabled, and a standard screw mount at the base so it can be used with a tripod.

Above: loading the film into the camera.

The camera supports Polaroid i-Type film, which is a new instant film that’s battery-free; and that also means the film is more affordable than its counterpart, the 600 film, which has a battery inside the film cartridge.

Above: The protective black film that rolls out with the photo.

Similar to the Polaroid Go, the pictures roll out with a protective black film that springs back into the camera when lifted.

Above: examples of photos taken.

The included lens caps result in pretty cool effects. The yellow filter, in particular, was unanimously favoured at a recent shoot I brought the Polaroid Now+ on (second picture from left).

Above: shooting with the polaroid now+.

Above: settings on the polaroid app.

The really fun part comes with the Polaroid mobile app, which is available on the Apple App Store and on Google Play. Once you connect the Now+, you can control it through manual settings for aperture, light painting, double exposure, remote trigger and even a “Portrait” mode. If you’re not familiar with the technical aspects of photography (in this case, exposure and aperture), I suggest you leave those settings on automatic or read up more on them before you take Polaroid pictures that don’t come out well (eg. over- or under-exposed).

Above: gorgeous silver frames.

A big selling point for me would be the different frames — including limited edition ones — available for the Polaroid system. Since the Now+ can use both i-Type and 600 film, there are many options to choose from and collect. I particularly love the silver and gold editions, and I’ve just ordered the super cool Duochrome film packs to play with.

Above: silver frame with me and the legendary dick lee. my lazy 5-year-old featured in the gold frame.

Above: the Polaroid Now+ with my leica M10-R.

The Polaroid Now+ has been joining me on my photoshoots and everyone loves it; nobody says no to a Polaroid photo of themselves to take home and keep. As you can see, I’ve created a specific spot in my camera case just for the Now+.

Above: my pelican camera case with a spot just for the polaroid now+.

This instant camera comes just in time for Christmas, because it makes a welcome gift for photographers and non-photographers alike. The recipient can unbox and use it on the spot! It’s easy to use for beginnings, and there are fun, creative options for more seasoned photographers.

Above: Polaroid Now+ box and color i-type film (black frame).

Polaroid Now+ I-Type Instant Camera is priced at $247 and available on Shopee. Polaroid i-type film is priced from $30 and available online at WWW.OSTSOME.COM.

Above: There was a star wars mandalorian film edition, but it’s now sold out. ☹️ It was a limited edition when Polaroid collaborated with star wars, and launched back in June 2020.

All About Harry Styles’ Beauty Brand ‘Pleasing’ — Of Nail Polishes, And A Dual-Ended Lip & Eye Pen

Harry Styles has a tendency to make the Internet fall head over heels in love. We might not be walking through fire, but the world just adores his disarming charm, and might we add, daring, gender-fluid, non-toxic male style that sees him donning a frilly frock on the cover of Vogue. So of course we’d be excited about the Watermelon Sugar singer’s latest venture — a beauty brand called ‘Pleasing‘.

With the tagline “Find your Pleasing,” it’s dedicated to “bring joyful experiences and products that excite the senses and blur the boundaries”. The first drop, Perfect Pearl, also launches with Styles’ own nail polishes, an apt debut since the artist has been spotted with many a manly manicure on red carpets and major events.

Other than a pearly white polish, pearly matte topcoat, and a curated set of nail polishes, there are also two skincare products to get hyped about — a dual-ended eye gel and lip treatment called The Pleasing Pen, and the Pearlescent Illuminating Serum of encapsulated pearls. These are now available for pre-order on their website, and will ship the week of 29 November.

“It’s starting with nail polish, because that was kind of the birth of what it was for,” Styles says in his DAZED cover interview. “Me seeing a colour on a flower or a wallpaper or something and thinking, ‘Oh, I wanna put that on my nails’. It was a fun little project, but during the pandemic, and when we eventually named it Pleasing, it felt like it was so much more than nail polish.”

“I’ve always found that the moments in my life which have brought me the most joy are the small ones, whether it be, you know, the end of the night under the stars or a bite of food, or sitting with your friends thinking, ‘Oh, I’m never gonna forget this’,” he continues. “It’s always those moments that I find have the longest-lasting effect on me, in terms of sparking something wonderful in me. I really think that the essence of Pleasing is finding those little moments of joy and showing them to people.”

If you’re familiar with Styles’ staple aesthetic of Gucci suits, feather boas and 70s flared pants, the look of Pleasing’s nail polishes wouldn’t be that much of a shocker. They’re housed in glass bottles that resemble perfume decanters of the past, with a classy marbleised finish on the rounded caps.

Two key shades are inspired by the pearl within the oyster; a Perfect Pearl gives a fresh pearly aura, while Pearly Tops is a clear topper with a subtle iridescence and a matte finish, which you’re free to wear on its own or apply over or under other shades for your own unique look. The 4-piece set further includes Inky Pearl, a pearlescent black with a deep blue radiance, and a funky Granny’s Pink Pearls, along with alphabet decals you may use to customise your fingertips.

As for skincare, the Pearlescent Illuminating Serum contains encapsulated “pearls” that deliver the actives of Vitamin B5, antioxidants, and amino acids right into the skin; lab-safe mica then gives off a subtle luminescent glow when worn on the skin. What’s most exciting — and currently sold out online — is The Pleasing Pen, which dispenses a refreshing eye gel of lingonberry, okra, and hyaluronic salt on one end, and a demi-matte lip treatment on the other. The former soothes and rejuvenates tired eyes, while the lip serum contains marshmallow extract and olive oil-derived squalene to replenish lips.

All formulas adhere to clean and vegan principles, and are made with “the lightest possible footprint in mind”. Any Mica included here is lab-created or ethically sourced; recycled materials are used where possible, including on the nail polish caps, while the products are packaged in compostable cartons made with post-consumer material and printed with bio-sourced inks.
