NYLON’s November 2021 Cover Girls — Models Hannah Cheng-Bradshaw & Melanie Jane Fernandez

Fresh-faced beauties? You bet. For our November cover story, we’re featuring not one, but two, gorgeous models from the latest cast of Asian modelling competition, Supermodel Me, who have obviously risen to the occasion by serving us look after look in our beauty spread — all sweet, yet feisty, and everything in between.

Now officially NYLON Singapore cover stars, Hannah Cheng-Bradshaw and Melanie Jane Fernandez are more than eager to share about their journeys and the lessons they’ve gained, as part of the sixth season of the high-profile modelling competition. True enough, in between takes, they delightfully regale tales of fending off fierce competition and enduring gruelling physical challenges, whether these involved literally lifting 45kg tyres off the ground, or shoving aside happy commercial smiles in favour of high fashion’s edgier profiles.

Yet, it would be a lie to say that they delivered every time — they didn’t — which is something the girls aren’t shy to admit. “I always wanted to be in control,” shares Hannah. “Thankfully, I learned that there’s a certain beauty that comes with not being in control of everything at every point in time; not only did I become a better model but I began to trust myself and have faith in myself in ways I never thought I could.”

And that’s the thing isn’t it — beauty goes beyond a pretty face. Hearing from each of them sheds light on the all-too-real journey towards being a model, the often more messy process of becoming one, not just the glossy, perfect image we’re accustomed to seeing on magazine spreads and campaign posters. Beyond the glitzy facade, the most valuable lessons of confidence and self-belief were something they had to learn along the way, and they’re here to tell us just how it is.

Melanie shares of having to embrace vulnerability, all while on screen, which was something she never thought she’d had to do before the televised series. “I hate people seeing me cry,” she says, “I thought it made me look weak, but it’s actually the complete opposite. Being in the competition taught me that vulnerability is actually a sign of courage because we become more resilient and brave when we embrace who we truly are and what we are feeling. It allowed me to be my most authentic self.” As a tanned-skinned model, she also opens up about the reality of an industry which, when she started out at 18, wasn’t as open to diversity as it is now.

While exuberant on set, Hannah, who had been scouted since she was just 7 years old, tells of the brutal nature of the industry, her words, not ours: “You’ll hear hundreds of ‘no’s and you have to understand that sometimes you’re just not fit for the part, or the client is looking for something else. But if you take every ‘no’ as a setback, it can really hinder your growth, how you see yourself, and your confidence.” She talks about having to develop grit and perseverance while receiving constant rejection — which is made that much tougher since models book jobs because of the way they look, hardly in spite of it.

The relationship between how one looks, and their sense of self-worth, then becomes dangerously entwined; throw in having to build confidence in an environment that demands of it so relentlessly, one where you’re required to peddle it even, and you start to get a glimpse of a models’ not-so-enviable life. Both 21-year-olds carry this burden with admirable maturity though. You see this self-assurance both in front of the camera and behind it; the fire in their eyes, frame after frame, and an equal tenacity when the cameras are turned off, of simmering passion within.

“Other people’s successes are not your own failures — and that’s something you’ll have to realise to succeed in this industry,” says Hannah. “Constantly comparing yourself to others will only bring you down; grow your confidence and be proud of yourself.” Melanie also echoes the same sentiment, “My biggest takeaway from the competition was to focus on myself, not on what other people think, and to know that I am enough.”

ON JOINING SUPERMODEL ME

Melanie Jane Fernandez: “Ever since I could remember, modelling was always my dream. I’ve watched the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, like, a hundred times, as well as any modelling reality shows that were on TV, and was always intrigued at the models’ poses, as well as their before and after photos. Watching those always felt like a calling to me, a voice in my head saying ‘Try it!’. I felt that the show was able to give me a platform to launch my career and to be able to model internationally. I also hope to be an inspiration to other young girls watching, to never be afraid to dream big, no matter how big the dream is; I want to remind them to always be fearless in the pursuit of what sets their soul on fire.”

Hannah Cheng-Bradshaw: “I love taking on new challenges and experiences. Although I’ve been modelling for a number of years now, I’ve often felt ‘stuck’ doing the same commercial and e-commerce jobs. This was the perfect opportunity to test my capabilities in all aspects of modelling and to gain new knowledge, experience, and adventure. Truly, a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity that I did not want to miss.”

THE CHALLENGES THEY FACED DURING THE COMPETITION

Melanie: “The first few weeks were actually the most challenging part of the competition for me. It was really tough because everything was new to me; having cameras follow you 24/7 was so strange, while being in a group of girls with such big personalities was pretty intimidating — and that’s coming from an extrovert. There was also the pressure of having to stand out. There are just some days that I won’t be up to it, some days when I just want to be quiet and stay in my bubble, but I felt I can’t do that because then I’d be ‘boring’ and forgettable.

However, I soon got used to it and started being confident about opening up and showing who Melanie really is. I made a best friend from the show as well, Prisca, who was representing Malaysia, and she really helped me open up. I had someone I could trust, to go to when I was stressed or sad or happy, and I’m so grateful for her.”

Hannah: “During the early stages of the competition, my mind really was on overdrive. I was constantly overthinking about upcoming photoshoots, trying to fixate and plan everything down to the nail, and simply worrying when I didn’t need to at all! When you’re up against such strong competitors, it’s only natural you will have some level of self-doubt.

Quickly, I realised that this constant kind of comparison is exactly what sends you spiralling out of control — and that was just it. I always wanted to be in control. Thankfully, I learned that there’s a certain beauty that comes with not being in control of everything at every point in time; not only did I become a better model but I began to trust myself and have faith in myself in ways I never thought I could.”

WHAT THEY LEARNT ALONG THE WAY

Hannah: “While I could easily list the many lessons I learned about modelling during my time in the competition, my biggest takeaway is simply this: focus on yourself, and don’t compare yourself to others. To anyone, in any way, even if it’s your own sister! At the end of the day, everyone is on their own journey, learning their own lessons and hitting their own milestones. When you constantly compare yourself and your capabilities to someone else, you end up losing focus of your own strengths and your own journey that you’re on.

Going into this, there was definitely a level of pressure on me given that my older, much more-experienced sister, Aimee, was also in a modelling competition as well (and of course, earned herself 2nd runner-up). With that said, I definitely wanted to do well. However, the comparison game in my head had to stop — with her, and with everyone else in the competition. To constantly compare is to damage your own sense of self, and I knew that in order to truly accomplish my goals, I had to gear my energy towards seeing my own strengths, qualities, and talents that make me, me.”

Melanie: “Being in a competition with all these gorgeous girls, you can’t help but compare yourself sometimes. In fact, in the first episode, I was one of the few girls that went last, and being in that position, so many poses I had in mind had already been done by the girls that went before me. It made me panic because I really wanted to stand out, be different, and show creativity, but instead of focusing on myself and being confident, I was too fixated on what other people might think. I had forgotten to actually focus on myself, and landed in the bottom three that week.

After that initial stumble though, I told myself over and over, through every photoshoot challenge, that it doesn’t matter what the other girls before me had done, I can add my own flair to it. Once I changed my mindset, everything started to fall into place for me. I didn’t overthink every single detail, and I remembered to have fun and be in the moment. My biggest takeaway was to focus on myself, not on what other people think, and to know that I am enough.”

A MODEL HAS TO HAVE…

Hannah: “This industry is definitely a bit brutal at times, so you need to have perseverance. You’ll hear hundreds of ‘no’s and you have to understand that sometimes, you’re just not fit for the part, or the client is looking for something else. But if you take every ‘no’ as a setback, it can really hinder your growth, how you see yourself and your confidence. It’s about having grit, and knowing that you have to be a little thick-skinned and take criticism well — take it in, internalise it, but don’t take it to heart because every thing that comes your way is meant to help you become a better model, and to grow as a person as well. It’s quite tough when the only thing to judge are your looks — because that’s the job, your face is your work —so you just have to not let the inevitable negativity get to you and affect your confidence.”

Melanie: “Confidence. It’s a harsh industry because you’re getting your jobs based on how you look; It’s not personal if you don’t get the job, but you might feel like it’s your fault. There are a lot of critiques as well, like you should lose weight, change your hairstyle, but if you’re sure that this is who you are, then you’ll be able to book the jobs you want. You’ll also need to have passion in this industry because there are going to be a lot of ‘no’s — you will probably get 90% ‘no’s and 10% ‘yes’, and if you don’t have the passion, you may not be able to conquer all the ‘no’s to succeed.”

ON GAINING THAT CONFIDENCE

Hannah: “You really cannot compare yourself to others. And I know I can say this because everyone always compares me to my sister, Aimee! As people, we’re different, and as models, we’re different as well. We go for castings for the same role, and one of us won’t get it. The whole point of confidence in yourself is knowing that you have attributes that make you, you. That’s what will make you stand out as a person on your own. Other people’s successes are not your own failures — and that’s something you’ll have to realise to succeed in this industry. Constantly comparing yourself to others will only bring you down; grow your confidence and be proud of yourself. I really know it firsthand!”

Melanie: For me, I didn’t start off as young as other models did. I was already 18, so I knew myself and was already confident of who I was. And confidence is so important! I am confident, but there are obviously some days that I’ll feel out of it. Even if it’s your saddest day though, you still have to power through a shoot.”

THE MOST SURPRISING PART ABOUT MODELLING IS…

Melanie: “It’s not all glamorous! What you see on screen, even for the show, is just 10 seconds of what’s going on. We can be filming for hours and hours. In fact, we had to do all the shots we did at least 3 or 4 times, multiple times, and exactly the same as the first time too, no matter how tired you were.

Before the show, I had only ever done e-commerce and commercial modelling as well, so in the first episode, when they challenged us to pose in lingerie while being hung on a hammock, it was crazy. We also only had 10 minutes for each photo challenge, so there’s really no room for mistakes. The first episode really set the tone for the competition, and I was surprised at how hard modelling can actually be. You need to be calm under pressure for you to be able to think of the next set of poses to do, and also look your most beautiful self, because if you’re panicking, the face shows it all. The amount of hard work to get that perfect shot is astounding.”

Hannah: “The world of modelling has changed; this new era of modelling requires models to be well-rounded, both physically and mentally. While many may think that the physical aspect is the toughest part, staying strong in your own mind is what truly unlocks your greatest potential.

I think the modelling industry has also changed for the good. The criteria for being a model isn’t just a pretty face, it’s about having a uniqueness, and nowadays, the industry embraces that in different ways, whether you might have birthmarks, or odd features. People love weird. Beauty standards are constantly changing, and finally, in 2021, people are accepting that humans are all different and not everybody has the same body type or beauty standards, so it’s great to see that kind of diversity opening up.”

HER START IN MODELLING

Hannah: “I modelled as a child, so I did my first print ad when I was 3 years old, for a shoe store in China. In Singapore though, I’ve known the modelling agent I’m with today since I was 7 years old. My older sister Aimee was scouted one day when we were just walking around in Plaza Singapura, and then brought us to the head booker at the time, Bonita, our agent to this day. She took a look at Aimee, who was a tall, lanky 13-year-old girl, and looked at Ella and I, and went, okay, I’ll take you all in! It’s definitely something I’m grateful for because I’m not sure where I’d be today if it wasn’t for meeting my agent. We’ve worked together for 13 years now!

I didn’t really become serious until I went to university in London, and ended up coming back here a year and a half in because of the pandemic. I became, probably, one of the biggest e-commerce girls here because I was working almost every single day doing catalogue shoots, sometimes twice a day, for months on end.”

MODELLING ’40 OUTFITS IN 60 MINUTES’

Hannah: “I said that during the Supermodel Me intro, and it’s true! I still remember that it was a full-day e-commerce job. I was the only model on set, and they had to finish all their looks on that day; we had ran overtime and they still had a full rack of clothes left. The only thing that got me through it was keeping track of how many outfits I could get through. It was like, change, and style, fix your hair, add on a bag, and shoot. I remember that I would take a sip of water every five outfits. It was a bit of a “factory” moment for me, but yeah, the ins and outs of modelling.”

ON HOW THE SHOW PORTRAYED HER AS A ‘PERFECTIONIST’

Hannah: “Honestly, I wouldn’t say that I am. But I would say that I’m very hard on myself, and set very high expectations for myself, not just modelling but in every aspect of my life, in fitness or in my studies, I only ever want to pursue the best and to be my best. Actually, now it does sound like I’m a perfectionist! [laughs] But it’s because I set really high goals for myself and want to achieve them, and having a goal in mind and working towards it is the best mindset you can have. But! Perfectionists, normally, if they fail, it’s very hard on them. I take failure as part of the learning process, I think it’s okay to do something and to fail, rather than to not have taken the opportunity first.

Last year, I decided to run a marathon with my dad. We trained for 12 weeks and halfway through, I had a bad fall mid-run and ended up losing three modelling jobs because I couldn’t cover up the injury. So I was thinking, is this really worth it? The training was getting tougher, I was losing jobs because of this hobby, but I made a commitment to achieving this, and even though there may be literal setbacks that get you on the floor, you have to take that as an opportunity to reshape the situation into something that will drive you to push further. I just took it as a learning experience to watch where I step and to do even better in my training, moving forward. And yes I finished it! I still can’t believe I did that now!”

HER START IN MODELLING

Melanie: “I started when I joined a modelling competition here in Singapore, The New Paper New Face in 2018. I won First Runner Up, and I was 18 then, and ended up modelling part-time with another modelling agency. I then decided to join Basic Models’ open casting in 2020, and am now with them! I’m more experienced in commercial and e-commerce shoots, not so much high-fashion ones, so the show really opened my mind to what I haven’t tried as a model.”

ON DIVERSITY AND BEING A TANNED-SKINNED MODEL

Melanie: “Before, diversity wasn’t a big thing in Singapore, but now, it’s getting more inclusive — more local brands are using tan-skinned models as well, and I’ve worked with catalogues including Zalora and LOVET.

When I first started in 2018 though, there wasn’t as much opportunities as there are now. I wouldn’t really book blogshops at all, and it was just commercials where I felt I had to play the token minority. Now that international runways and campaigns are so inclusive though, people are taking inspiration from that; it’s definitely happening in Asia, and I hope there will be more changes in the years to come.

Still, even then, I knew I wanted to be a model in the long run, and ever since I was a little girl, so I knew that I just had to push forward. And I can be the bearer of change as well, so if one brand uses me, then other brands might feel the same too; it’s like a domino effect. People do say like, it’s really great seeing more diversity now because I can relate to you. With the show and the exposure from it, I feel that I have a platform, a voice, to tell people about the things I believe in, which includes diversity. Not just skin colour, but body types as well. I was an athlete before, a member of Singapore’s National Youth Volleyball team, so I don’t think I have the model build.”

HOW THE SHOW HAD BROUGHT OUT AN UNEXPECTED SIDE OF HER

Melanie: “I’m actually a really strong and independent woman, someone who doesn’t like to show much emotion — and I hate people seeing me cry! However, the show taught me how to be vulnerable, how it is okay for people to see you be with different kinds of emotions because we’re human after all. Even in the first episode, you see me shed a few tears, which honestly really shocked me because I never ever cry in front of people, not even my boyfriend or closest friends. I hated showing vulnerability because I thought it made me look weak, but it’s actually the complete opposite. Being in the competition taught me that vulnerability is a sign of courage, because we become more resilient and brave when we embrace who we truly are and what we are feeling. It allowed me to be my most authentic self.

The Le Creuset x Harry Potter Cookware Collection, Including Dutch Ovens And A ‘Dark Mark’ Casserole

Your kitchen could be that much more magical, with this coveted range of cookware from Le Creuset, now featuring the most iconic symbols from the beloved Harry Potter franchise.

Harry’s storied lightning scar finds its way onto a lid knob of the brand’s signature cast iron Dutch Oven, in Gryffindor-red with a graphic of Harry himself on the lid. True seekers would love the Golden Snitch detail atop a bright blue dutch oven, while those inclined might enjoy a delicious Dark Mark on a matte black casserole dish.

“The experience of cooking and sharing a memorable meal with loved ones is pure magic,” says Paul van Zuydam, owner of Le Creuset. “We are thrilled to team up with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to bring that magic to life through an extraordinary collection that combines the adventurous culinary world with the fantastic imaginative Wizarding World.”

Known for their durable cookware, the collection extends to dessert plates, mugs, and a set of spatulas as well.

In shades of red, green, blue, and yellow, the plates pay tribute to the four Hogwarts houses, with their respective symbols featured prominently in the centre of each plate. A set of four spatulas are inspired by Harry, Hermione, Ron and Dumbledore’s fine wands, and are moulded as such so that you’ll feel like you’re casting some magic too.

Finally, a series of four mugs pay tribute to four iconic locales that should be familiar to all Potterheads: Ollivanders, Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, The Three Broomsticks, and Gringotts.

IKEA Debuts A Gaming Collection Of A Height-Adjustable Desk, Chairs, Accessories And More

Gamers and streamers, there’s a new expansion pack to take note of. IKEA, has extended their line of affordable, functional furniture into the gaming arena, with an entire gaming range of ergonomic desks, chairs, and accessories that will fit beautifully into your home — while, hopefully, raising your APM too. This first foray has them collaborating with the professionals at Republic of Gamers (ROG) for the ideal gaming set-up, and will launch in IKEA Singapore stores from 4 November 2021.

With an estimated 2.5 billion gamers worldwide, and counting, it’s safe to say that many of us are familiar with spending long hours in front of the PC or gaming console, in the name of leisure, thankfully, though that’s often accompanied by muscle aches, and neck or finger cramps as well. IKEA, therefore, is here to give us elegant and smart high-performance solutions that cater to these specific needs.

Working together with ROG, an ASUS sub-brand known for gaming hardware, the furniture brand has gone on to create more than 30 home items — of gaming desks and chairs, a drawer unit, and accessories such as a neck pillow, mug holder, and mouse bungee — that make it easy for everyone to create their dream gaming set-up, pro gamer or not.

MATCHSPEL Gaming chair, $259. UPPSPEL Gaming desk, $899.

These include six new product families that target PC gamers: UPPSPEL, LÅNESPELARE, MATCHSPEL, GRUPPSPEL, UTESPELARE and HUVUDSPELARE. All UPPSPEL products have been designed by both IKEA and ROG in close collaboration; the rest of the series have been developed by IKEA based on the insights and knowledge gained from the collaboration.

“We want our products to offer better ergonomics and functions so that gamers can become even better at what they do without wearing out their bodies – become better athletes, basically”, says IKEA designer Jon Karlsson.

A key highlight would be the generously-sized MATCHSPEL gaming chair, which is designed to be comfortable while enhancing your gaming performance. The chair includes adjustable armrests that relieve strain on the arms and shoulders, added flexibility in the headrest, as well as built-in lumbar support and a mesh back to ensure steady airflow.

Then, there’s the UPPSPEL gaming desk, a height-adjustable battle station essentially. Available in two sizes, it’s designed such that either side can be used as the front — a V-cut portion can function as easy cable management, or give you a more immersive layout that gets you closer to the screen.

Accessories include a CPU stand with castors and a mousepad, among other things, though several sleek essentials stand out. A multi-functional LÅNESPELARE cushion/blanket is really both, when you’re looking for some added warmth while exploring virtual worlds, and features a cyberpattern that’s replicated across a neck pillow and mug as well. A functional mouse bungee ensures unhindered movement, while a wooden accessories stand, in the shape of a robot hand, makes for a nice resting spot for your headphones — if you can pry yourself away from the PC that is.

The Best Oat Milks For Your Coffee — Dairy-Free, Plant-Based Options Made For Home Baristas

Plant-based foods have become more of a reality these days, with our increasing awareness towards sustainability — and switching to plant-based milks, such as almond or soy, is often considered a small change we can make towards a more conscious lifestyle.

King of them all though has to be oat milk, now a popular alternative at even mainstream coffee chains, where you can easily ask for an oat milk latte. When paired with coffee, it gives a wholesome, nutty aroma to your drink, which tends to go with Singaporeans’ preference for more full-bodied, less acidic coffee blends. It’s even a preferred choice from a sustainability point of view. According to a BBC report, oat milk produces relatively few greenhouse gases, and requires much less land and water in its production process compared to dairy milk.

We tried MILKLAB’s Oat Milk at their recent launch event.

If you’re thinking about recreating that cafe experience at home though, major brands have also come up with ‘barista edition’ alternatives. These oat milks are designed to froth and behave like dairy does, so you can achieve a nice whipped texture on top of your espresso coffee. The difference is this: they’ve optimised the right amount of fat content so that the bubbles don’t break during the frothing process, while the oat milk can maintain a more stable form that doesn’t immediately dissipate when served.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up a bunch of trusted brands, with ‘barista edition’ oat milks in their line-up.

1. OATLY

Already a household name when it comes to plant-based milks, the Swedish brand has actually been around for about 30 years, since its humble beginnings in Sweden. According to the brand, it’s special due to their patented enzyme technology that “copies nature’s own process and turns fibre rich oats into nutritional liquid food that is perfectly designed for humans”.

For their Barista Edition, the oat milk contains 3% fat that allows it to froth up nicely, while many have lauded their blend for its rich but lighter-bodied feel.. Not too sweet or overly heavy, skilled home baristas are able to create beautiful latte art with it as well. Personally, we were delighted with the lightly whipped texture the oat milk is able to create, as well as the natural taste of oats that doesn’t feel as overwhelming compared to soy or almond milks. Read here for our full review of their plant-based milks, including the Barista Edition.

$7.20 for 1L, Available at Lazada.

2. MILKLAB

MILKLAB recently found its way to our shores, and as Australia’s most popular barista milk, they’re primed to be a strong contender in the scene, especially if you like pairing your oat milks with coffee. Famous already for their almond milk ever since the brand was established in 2015, the oat milk variant was developed over two years while working with some of the world’s best coffee professionals, and is made to blend perfectly with espresso coffee, across both hot and cold beverages. Their formula is also made from 100% Australian oats, and contains 10% oat content, which is currently the highest concentration of oat content in the market.

When served with coffee, we can attest to its claims of a rich and creamy mouthfeel. The texture of the frothed oat milk tastes very similar to that of full-cream dairy, and with a subtle sweetness and slightly nutty taste that’s pleasant on the tongue. From our experience, they’ve also got just enough fat content for a truly stable formula that holds its own — the oat milk is able to stretch when frothed, and maintain a structure that doesn’t easily break, even while I was taking longer than usual to photograph my ready cup of coffee.

$6.90, available at ntuc FAIRPRICE.

3. MINOR FIGURES

As you can probably tell from its packaging, the London-based brand presents a quirky image that’s appealing to younger consumers, and is often found at hipster coffee joints that serve up well-balanced, worth-your-money artisanal coffee. The brand’s founders label themselves as “an unlikely mob of painters, jazz musicians, basketball players and barbers”, with a common love for specialty coffee, hence Minor Figures’ cult following amongst the in-crowd, who are proud to flaunt their 100% vegan products.

Made specifically for specialty coffee, Minor Figures‘ Oat Milk is formulated by baristas, for baristas, and therefore doesn’t skimp on quality. The goal here is to perfectly complement any roast profile or origin so you taste the true characteristics of your espresso shot, which is why many find their oat milk most pleasant since it doesn’t overpower or compete with the original notes of the coffee. The texture of its silky micro-foam just completes your coffee-drinking experience.

$7, available at lazada via ppp coffee.

4. OTIS

This New Zealand-based brand has been gaining traction for how it incorporates 100% Kiwi oats across their products, where the quality ingredient has benefitted from the country’s rich soil, fresh rainwater, and optimal amount of sun that makes for ideal growing conditions for the oat crop. Complete with sustainable farming practices, from the farm all the way to our kitchen counter, the brand goes the extra milk in making sure that every part of the process is accounted for, in order to boast true sustainable claims.

Many laud Otis‘ Oat Milk for its thick and creamy consistency, where the Barista blend features a frothy finish, though it tastes just as good on its own, on cereal, and in smoothies as well. The milk is further fortified with Calcium, D2, Riboflavin and B12, on top of dietary fibre, so you can feel better about your daily morning brew.

$6.95, available at ntuc fairprice and COLD STORAGE.

Our Review of the Samsung Z Flip3, A More User-Friendly Foldable Smartphone with Improved Features

Even as the smartphone industry continuously innovates and improves on their foldable technology, I have always found myself being particularly skeptical of the increasing trend. While I may like the idea of a throwback clamshell phone, the concept has always been a bit hard to accept, especially with the increasing sizes of smartphone displays today.

Though I may be a loyal non-foldable user, I was intrigued by the new features of the latest Samsung Z Flip3 and jumped at the opportunity to give the device a try. It was odd having to swap out my familiar brick model for a foldable one, but its nifty features definitely made up for it. Here’s our review of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 after spending a few weeks with it.

BIGGER COVER SCREEN TO IMPROVE USER EXPERIENCE

When I first held the Z Flip3, I was able to immediately tell the difference between this and its predecessor; the obvious change is its bigger outer display and the rear camera’s position. When folded into its clamshell mode, the Z Flip3 gave me an even sturdier grip, thanks to its larger hinge, which made me less worried about its fragility as a whole — especially when I slip the phone into my pocket or bag.

Alongside the durable Gorilla Glass Victus back, the Z Flip3 also comes with an IPX8 rating for water resistance, which came in handy for me since I like leaving my phone on the table where it is vulnerable to food spillage.

As mentioned previously, what would probably be counted as the focus of the upgrade is the larger cover screen on the rear which now has the ability to show more than just a single line of text (as it did with the original Z Flip). Instead of having to extend the phone to full length, I am now able to see notifications at a glance, including message replies. The cover screen also makes it easier to pay on-the-go with Samsung Pay and but take quick selfies or videos with Quick Shot.

Though I am not one who particularly enjoys taking selfies, the handy feature activated easily when I wanted to take a quick photo with my family during an outing together. I was able to switch in between modes and lenses, all on the cover screen, even ensuring I had space to capture everyone in the photo using the wide and ultra-wide lenses.
.

Another feature that I felt worth mentioning was the flexibility in wallpaper display that allows for GIFs to be used instead of just a still photo as my chosen image. The only downside to it is that the GIF wallpaper does not seem to be the primary default that activates when I lift the phone so I found myself having to tap it multiple times just to see it move.

SELFIE PHONE FIRST

As it is dubbed as a selfie-friendly phone, the Z Flip3 does not have a pro camera system like other models. Instead, the rear cameras do not come with a telephoto camera but only a 12MP f/1.8 Dual Pixel Main Camera with Optimal Image Stabilisation (OIS), and a 12MP f/2.2 Ultra-Wide Camera. However, this does not mean that the phone is not able to take good-quality photos. I actually found that the Z Flip3 was still able to take decent-looking photos with favourable colour balance during the day, just not distant subjects that require zoom.

Since selfies are the focal point of the phone, it hits all the marks for an enjoyable selfie experience. From the 10MP f/2.4 front-facing camera to its nifty hands-free features, the Z Flip3 makes it incredibly easy to take nice selfies without all the fuss and that awkward hand angle.
.

The key bonus of having the Z Flip3 is the ability to have the phone sit half-folded on the table, all ready to take a perfectly angled selfie or to engage in a video call with friends. With this angle, I was also able to use Dual Preview to easily edit my photos with the image on the top half of the screen and the editing tools on the bottom half of the screen — definitely beats having to hold my phone with both hands while I attempt to edit my photos.

ALL-ROUND GOOD USER EXPERIENCE

When unfolded, the Z Flip3 provides a 6.7-inch Full HD Plus display which has been improved on, with a 120Hz refresh rate that makes for smoother browsing and on-the-go gaming. As I tried the phone before Apple’s anticipated iOS 15 upgrade, I found the Z Flip3 to be running at an optimum speed that kept up with my browsing of image-heavy articles as well as my binge-watching of the Korean drama, The Penthouse: War in Life.

The clamshell build of the phone also improved the overall experience for me because instead of having to find something to prop up the phone, I was able to sit it on its own. While it may seem like a dealbreaker for some since the viewing screen will inevitably be smaller than in a landscape mode, the ease of not having to ensure it does not fall over, takes the cake for me.
.

Although the Z Flip3 does give the phone an all-around good user experience, a major concern for me is its battery life. When compared with other non-foldable phones, the Z Flip3’s battery is not the best and has a tendency to drain over the course of a day.

This meant that my Z Flip3 rarely lasted till the second day and it became a bit of a hassle to charge it almost every day; as compared to my iPhone which was able to last a little bit into the next day. The lack of a charger in the box (as part of Samsung’s sustainability commitment) could also be a little troublesome for those without extra adapters lying around as charging the phone can only be done through a computer.

CLOSER LOOK AT THE SAMSUNG GALAXY ZFLIP3 SPECS

IS THE SAMSUNG GALAXY ZFLIP3 WORTH ITS PRICE?

Honestly, for a foldable phone with a decent amount of nifty features almost comparable with other flagship phones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is definitely worth its $1,398 price tag. Though it isn’t quite as affordable as some other phones in the market, it is the less costly model in comparison with new foldables such as the Samsung Z Fold3 (priced at $2,398) — which makes for a good choice especially for those who are looking to own a recently released foldable phone.

With that said, it should be reminded that the biggest perk of the Z Flip3 is the fact that it is foldable and operates as an ideal selfie phone. So if you are someone who is seeking more out of their smartphone, then the Z Flip3 may not be the one for you.

First look and review of the Apple AirPods 3rd Generation

It makes a lot of sense for Apple to launch their main haul of consumer products during this time of the year; Christmas is coming and one of the most popular gifts for the season is the AirPods. In fact, Apple claims that AirPods are the best selling earbuds in the world, and that’s pretty believable to me because most of my friends have a pair.

Above: Apple AirPods 3rd Generation (photo from Apple)

With this new 3rd Generation, the main improvements from the previous edition (2nd Gen) is that it’s smaller (about a third shorter), more comfortable (it has a more contoured shape with softer edges), and sounds better (the new shape directs audio into the ear better).

Setting up is, as expected, very easy to do. It’s that magical Apple “one-touch” setup where you just bring the case close to your iPhone or Apple device, open the AirPods case, and you’ll get prompted to pair the two devices. For this new gen, you’ll also be prompted to update your iOS to version 15.1 if you haven’t done so; this update helps the user take advantage of the new features in the device, such as Spatial Audio.

Above: that magical one-touch setup between apple devices

Spatial audio is meant to give a 3D surround sound effect and this is demonstrated best with FaceTime; when you’re in a video call with several participants, you’ll hear their voice coming from the direction that they are on your screen, so the experience feels more real and natural.

Apple has also updated their driver with a new custom-designed one with even lower distortion. I cranked up Hotel California to the AirPods’ maximum volume (which seems to be louder than the 2nd gen) and the sound was still clear with no cracking when the heavy drums kicked in.

Here’s a comparison of the current AirPods family:

Above: Comparison of the current apple AirPods taken from APPLE.COM

With the new AirPods, there’s also a larger acoustic vent at the top of each ear bud, and a new feature called Adaptive EQ. This makes use of inward-facing microphones that pick up what the ear is hearing and tunes it to what the user’s ear shape should ideally hear. So even though we’re all different, the music sounds good for everyone.

Above: unboxing the apple airpods 3rd generation

Other things to note, the new AirPods are designed to be more durable and have a rating of IPX4 for sweat- and water-resistance. There’s also a wind noise reducing mesh so calls are clearer, and a skin-detect sensor that tells whether the AirPods are in your ear or out of it — and this actually determines if it’s skin or something else (like the inside of your bag). This helps to preserve battery life since it won’t turn on unintentionally.

Above: The case is magsafe compatible and provides an additional 30 hours of usage

The battery life has increased by an hour from the 2nd Gen (it’s now 6 hours of listening time), and a 5-minute charge in the case gives an hour of battery life. Also, the case is MagSafe compatible, which is super convenient for existing Apple mobile device users and fits right in to the Apple ecosystem.

The 3rd Generation of Apple AirPods are compact and designed with an open fit design.

One thing to note as well, is that there’s a free 6-month subscription to Apple Music when you buy AirPods. And I love Apple Music; the stations give me really good recommendations to new and existing music based on my music tastes, and I can directly download tracks or whole albums to listen to on my device when there’s no Internet connection (this actually happened last night when SingTel was down).

AirPods (3rd generation) is priced at $269 and available online at APPLE.COM/SG/AIRPODS and in stores at apple orchard road, Marina Bay sands and Jewel Changi Airport.

All the new features in macOS Monterey, including updates to FaceTime, group Safari tabs, working across Apple devices and more

macOS Monterey brings new useful and convenient features that help users be more efficient in the use of their Macs. Here are all the key updates to look forward to.

Updates to FaceTime and video calls

A new spatial audio function has voices in a FaceTime call sound like they are coming from where the person is positioned on the screen, so it’s a more natural and realistic experience. There are also two new microphone modes that include: Voice Isolation — this removes background noise so the speaker is clearer and in focus, and Wide Spectrum, which allows all the ambient noise in so participants can hear everything (if that’s what you want).

Our favourite Portrait mode also comes to FaceTime, and this keeps the user in focus while blurring the background (just like a bokeh in photos). This function can also be used in video conferencing apps including Webex and Zoom.

Finally, there’s SharePlay, which enables users to share their experiences on a FaceTime call. For example, music, photos, movies, the entire screen or just a specific app can be shared in real time with another FaceTime caller,

Universal Control

With Universal Control, you can put your Apple devices next to each other and instantly work across them. It’ll recognise a single mouse and keyboard, and you can type text on any device, drag and drop content back and forth  between devices, or draw with Apple Pencil on iPad, and then place the illustrations right into apps on the Mac.

Live Text and Visual Lookup

Live Text detects any text in photos and converts the flattened text in the picture into actual text that you can copy and paste with. This is particularly useful for saving information like phone numbers, websites and addresses.

Apart from recognising text, there’s also something called Visual Look Up, which is a new tool that helps users learn about things in photos, such as animals, art, landmarks, and plants.

Focus

Turn on “Focus” and remove distractions like app and message notifications while you’re getting your task done. You can set preferences on the things you want switched off and those you want left on for this mode.

Organise and Collaborate with Notes

Quick Note allows the user to quickly jot down notes while in any app, and to also add links (like a website or location in Maps) from apps to a Quick Note. Also within Notes is a new collaboration tool that lets participants of the shared note add mentions, and users can now view updates to the note in a new Activity view.

The Safari Tab Experience

There are now Tab Groups where the user can save and organise tabs so working in Safari gets a lot neater. For example, you can have a Tab Group on planning a trip, and another on research for a project. These Tab Groups will also sync across all the user’s Apple devices (eg. Mac, iPhone, and iPad) so it’s easy to pick up where you left off.

Shortcuts

Shortcuts has been on the iPhone for a while and it now comes to the Mac. It allows users to automate common or everyday tasks, such as opening frequently used apps at the start of the work day.

iCloud+

Finally, Apple launches iCloud+, which offers new premium features such as Hide My Email, expanded HomeKit Secure Video support, and a new internet privacy service, iCloud Private Relay. For current iCloud storage subscribers, the upgrade is automatic and at no additional cost.

macOS Monterey is available now as a free software update. For macOS Monterey compatibility, visit apple.com/sg/macos/monterey.
iCloud+ plans:
50GB with one HomeKit Secure Video camera ($1.28 per month)
200GB with up to five HomeKit Secure Video cameras ($3.98 per month)
and 2TB with an unlimited number of HomeKit Secure Video cameras ($12.98 per month).
HomeKit Secure Video requires a supported iCloud plan, compatible HomeKit-enabled security camera, and HomePod, Apple TV, or iPad running as a home hub.

Review: Mylo’s, A New Gelato Cafe With Sweet Treats And More, At Gardens By The Bay

If you’re one of those people who’ve taken up cycling or hiking in our abundant green spaces, popping by Singapore’s latest gelato cafe, Mylo’s, is the exact respite you need. Located at Gardens by the Bay, the part right along the Waterfront Promenade, it’s a short walk away from Marina Bay Sands, but manages to stay just far enough to feel like a welcome retreat. And come on, it’s gelato we’re talking about.

Softer, healthier and more flavourful than ice cream, the difficult thing about the dessert is keeping it as fresh and luscious as when it was first churned — which is why we’re glad Mylo’s gets it right by housing over 20 of their seasonal, handcrafted flavours in traditional stainless steel buckets. Called Pozzetti, the metal drums with covered lids maintain the integrity of the gelato by protecting it from the elements within a sealed cold well, and make for a pretty admirable display that feels authentic to the gelato-eating experience.

Photo: Mylo’s.
Photo: Mylo’s.

What’s less traditional though is the atmosphere within the gelato cafe. With vibrant turquoise tiles forming a kind of feature display at the bar counter, along with a hot pink neon Mylo’s sign and pops of yellow scattered tastefully throughout rattan-and-wood furnishings, we get a sense of fun that stands out against its tranquil green environment.

Then again, you’ve invited to take in your serene surroundings too, whether it’s a seat at the alfresco terrace, or indoors too, since Mylo’s features a floor-to-ceiling glasshouse structure that overlooks the Active Garden. Named after Chef Michael Wilson’s darling golden retriever, dog parents would be thrilled to know that the cafe caters to your furry kid, with homemade dog biscuits and pup-friendly popsicles.

Photo: Mylo’s.

And if we’re talking about vibrant flavours, our tasting at Mylo’s just about confirms that they’re full of it — of, basically, all the good stuff, that is. All their gelato is churned onsite, and incorporates only quality ingredients of fresh fruits, nuts, and purees with a proprietary base of French cream and high-quality milk that doesn’t take away from the star ingredients.

There are milk-based options to choose from, as well as refreshing, light-on-the-palate sorbets, some of which are spiked with alcohol. It’s clear that thought has gone into their gelato to achieve utmost quality — an Apple Pie flavour, for instance, blends together every part of the apple pie, from the pie crust to the spiced apples and crumble, for a frozen treat that’s as smooth as you can get. Take a look at some of their menu highlights ahead.

The Gelato

Gelato — Strawberry Tart & Tiramisu ($8 for the double).

For pure research purposes, we had a taste of every single gelato served at Mylo’s on a balmy weekday afternoon, so of course we were spoilt for choice. Our top two picks though — Strawberry Tart and Tiramisu, served as a double scoop ($8) in a cup. You may also opt for a handcrafted cone that’s freshly made in front of you.

While probably the most straightforward way to enjoy your gelato, overall, we were definitely impressed, first, by the sheer number of flavours presented in front of us, and second, by how pure and authentic those flavours are. Strawberry Tart tasted exactly how it should be, which makes sense since the original tart’s components of sable and strawberry puree have been combined with a custard base, with a presence that’s still strongly felt even in smooth gelato form.

The traditional Pozzetti at Mylo’s.

Tiramisu, on the other hand, is a mix of mascarpone, Licor 43 and espresso, with a sprinkling of cacao powder sprinkled on top after it’s been churned. The result is delightful, and though I did miss the textural components of the actual dessert, Mylo’s gelato captures the rich creaminess of tiramisu in a smooth blend that melts right on your tongue.

The Gelato Sandwich

The Gelato Sandwich ($8) ; our table of desserts.

Instead of traditional ice-cream sandwiches or wafers, Mylo’s serves their gelato in between toasted brioche bread, and my, this is a creation you can’t miss. The Gelato Sandwich ($8) uses fluffy brioche that’s topped off with a generous amount of gelato, piled and sculpted on, then put through a hot panini press to get the bread nice and toasted. All this makes for plenty of contrasts right from your first bite, and that intrigue of a cold, soft dessert within warm, crisp toast just keeps you going for more.

Photo: Mylo’s — Gelato Sandwich ($8).

We had ours with the Pistachio gelato, perhaps a classic flavour that Mylo’s wants to get right; instead of artificial flavours, they’ve sourced for pistachio paste all the way from Italy, so we never get a flavour that’s too overpowering on the palate. Instead, the gelato is light and fresh, with lusciously nutty notes.

The Affogato

Their version of the Affogato ($10).

While the menu does offer a more classic affogato, of espresso and vanilla, Mylo’s does their own modern version of the “drowned” Affogato dessert ($10), by putting together their Vanilla and Himalayan Pink Salt gelato with an emulsion of Papa’s Grove Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Honey, then finished with a sprinkle of fennel pollen.

This feels like the type of dessert that’s inspired by the nearby Flower Dome, and we did appreciate the floral and herby notes of the concoction. It is on the sweeter side though, and I personally prefer the strong hit of sharp contrast that an espresso usually provides. But that’s us stuffed with all the desserts we could have at once. For its novelty, and the balanced and more complex flavour it still adds to the regular gelato, you can still give this a shot.

Photo: Mylo’s — Affogato.

As a full-fledged cafe, Mylo’s also provides freshly baked cakes, sandwiches and pastries, including brownies, muffins, and a delectable Lemon Tart ($11). These are served alongside coffee featuring the Throwback Blend by local coffee roasters PPP Coffee, so you’re really getting a full experience here, even if you just walked in to get a single scoop of their gelato.

Why These Chunky Gold Hoop Earrings Are Our Current Jewellery Obsessions

Gold hoop earrings are one of those fashion constants that have endured in popularity for decades. We’re not even exaggerating here, but here’s what we’ve observed: the classic, versatile and humble jewellery choice has been spotted on both millennials and Gen Zs, which means it has attained the impossible task of transcending the contentious borders between the two generations. No mean feat.

These days though, we’re specifically favouring oversized medium-to-large sized options in smooth but wide-cut chunky metal, and we blame Instagram It-girls — Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and the likes — for our mild obsession. It’s not a bad thing though. From dressy to everyday, the style staple has the magical ability to go with anything and everything, which is why we, too, think they’re worth investing in.

Just a note here — we’re definitely moving away from those cheap online buys that tarnish in two seconds. Sure, those served our budget-conscious wallets pretty well for a time, but it’s a pity that they lose their shine and quickly turn murky after leaving them out in our humid weather.

For fuss-free options, it’s best to consider materials that will last through even a shower or soak in the pool. Plenty of demi-fine jewellery brands opt for 14k or 18k gold-plated pieces over brass, or even recycled bronze, which brilliantly serves our daily needs without putting a huge dent in our monthly expenses.

Ahead, you’ll find our top picks for gold hoop earrings of the season — from simple chic ones, to bold textured and braided pairs that subtly stand out.

Makeup Foundations to buy this month! Including Sisley, Dior and Gucci

Foundation is the one makeup product to really get right in your beauty kit. A shade too light or too dark will appear like you’re wearing a mask (horrors!); a texture that’s too light may not even out your complexion, while one that’s too thick will look “cakey”; and worst of all, the wrong formula could make your skin break out! A good foundation, on the other hand, has wonderful skincare ingredients and technology that will not just make your complexion look instantly great, but will improve the appearance and health of it over time — and these new launches here are the ones that have our endorsement.

SISLEY PHYTO-TEINT NUDE

I’m starting with my favourite out of everything featured here. This little bottle appears unassuming but is full of surprises. The texture is more fluid than the ones below, but not to the point of being drippy or watery. When it touches the skin, it melts in instantly, but can be blended to cover a wide area of skin, so only a little is needed at one time.

On the skin, it feels weightless, but it provides good coverage that evens out skin imperfections and rough texture, but still looks incredibly natural. The finish is velvety, and it achieves the “no makeup” look while still creating a better skin appearance. And over time, the infusion of skincare ingredients will improve the skin’s health. I highly recommend this liquid foundation, especially if you’ve never tried anything from Sisley before. This is a good product to start with.

Sisley phyto-teint nude is priced at $120 (30ml), and will be available in 10 shades from october 2021 at sisley counters.

DIOR CAPTURE TOTALE SUPER POTENT SERUM FOUNDATION

When I first saw this product, I already had it in my head that it can’t go wrong. Dior foundations are always incredible, and I really love their Capture Totale line of skincare. So for the stem cell technology that’s in Capture Totale’s serum to be infused into the brand’s foundation, it’s really a winning formula.

This liquid foundation is a smooth cream that feels light and airy; it glides on to skin like a satin finish, and evens out the skin tone and texture. The complexion appears instantly more radiant and is softer to the touch. Dior’s research shows that after four weeks of using this serum foundation, the skin improves in radiance (+41%), firmness (+27%), has a more even complexion (+46%), and wrinkles and fine lines are smoother (+54%).

There aren’t a lot of shades available (there are six shades: 1 Neutral, 1 Warm, 2 Neutral, 2 Warm, 3 Neutral, 4 Neutral), so if you can’t find your exact match but still want a foundation from the brand (all Dior foundations are excellent), check out Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation (there are 21 shades on Sephora.sg).

The Dior Capture Totale Super Potent Serum Foundation is priced at $122 (30ml), and is available at all Dior Beauty boutiques and counters, and online on SEPHORA.SG and Tangs.com.

GUCCI CUSHION DE BEAUTÉ

Just like all things Gucci, this is a very pretty cushion. It’s hard not to love the lion head and floral pattern printed on top of the soft pink case, and I can imagine many Gucci fans buying this cushion just for its packaging. Pretty case aside, the cushion’s formula is “juicy” and hydrating; it feels comfortable on the skin, and blends in well resulting in a soft, semi-matte finish. The cushion applicator with a tapered end is a nice touch, as is the inclusion of SPF 22.

The cushion will debut in six shades and the colours appear pretty “light” in the pan, so I would suggest going down to the counter to get advice about the right shade for you. Featured here is shade 2, which appears too light for my skin tone, but it blends in just fine and looks natural once the product settles in.

GUCCI CUSHION DE BEAUTÉ is priced at $102 ($72 for refills), and available at Gucci Beauty counters at Takashimaya, Tangs, BHG and Metro, as well as online at their respective e-stores, and from 16 Sep 2021 at Sephora stores and SEPHORA.SG.

ESPRIQUE COMFORT MAKEUP CREAM

This feels more like a BB cream than a liquid or cream foundation, so if you’re looking for a hybrid skincare / makeup product similar to a tinted moisturiser, then this one’s for you.

The texture is thicker and tackier than the liquid foundations and cushion featured above, but it also feels more hydrating — like a moisturiser. It is exactly as its name implies — comforting. It doubles up as sunscreen too, with SPF50+/PA++++.

A great thing about this cream, is that once it’s absorbed into the skin, it doesn’t transfer to your face mask. As a makeup product, it does a decent job minimising the appearance of pores and fine lines, and brightens up the skin tone making it look healthier. It’s also really affordable for the quality you get (Kose products are excellent, and all made in Japan!), but unfortunately only comes in this one shade.

ESPRIQUE COMFORT MAKEUP CREAM is priced at $36 (35g) and will be available soon at all esprique counters.

The Simpsons x Balenciaga Capsule Collection Of Hoodies, T-Shirts And Leather Bags

After major hype over The Simpsons appearing at Paris fashion week, where Homer, Marge and family made a surprise appearance down the runway in an animated short, Balenciaga has followed that up with a capsule collection of fun graphic t-shirts and hoodies, as well as leather bags, that capture even more of that now-iconic pop culture moment.

Instead of a red puffer or gold gown, or their regular get-up actually, the pieces in the The Simpsons x Balenciaga collection feature a family portrait that sees the Springfield residents decked in avant-garde wear, of spikes, puffed sleeves, and all-black attire from Balenciaga’s past collections.

Now on hoodies and t-shirts in black, blue, white, and yellow, the artwork is printed with a special crackled effect to give it a well-worn style. T-shirts are available an oversized style, with elbow-length sleeves and a crewneck hem, or a more fitted cut. The collection includes accessories as well, including keychains and small leather goods, though the boxy Mini Shopping Bag and Shoulder Tote Bag are not to be missed.
