HONOR Magic V3 is the thinnest and lightest foldable smartphone with a superb triple rear camera

Earlier this year, we reviewed the HONOR Magic V2 foldable smartphone. We first spotted it on our good friend, Bobby Tonelli’s Instagram, where he spoke about how thin it was. In our review, we were impressed by its camera system, and particularly loved the black PU leather finish it came in. It’s no surprises then, that its successor, the Magic V3 has improved on all of its strengths — what’s surprising is how soon after the V2, this new version has launched.

While the HONOR Magic V2 was just 9.9mm thin when folded, the Magic V3 is incredibly even slimmer, at 9.2mm folded, and 4.35mm opened. It holds the title of the world’s thinnest foldable phone; but apart from being thin, how does its performance and camera system fare? Before we get into that, let’s take a look at the device:

Above: The HONOR Magic V3 in Silk Brown.

Above: The super thin HONOR Magic V3, which has a super steel hinge that is not just slim, but durable.

There’s no doubt the phone itself is gorgeous. The design is sleek, luxurious, and eye-catching. The Silk Brown, in particular, looks expensive with its leather-like finish, while the other colours of Mossy Green and Classic Black that the phone comes in, are equally classy in style.

Compared to its predecessor, the HONOR Magic V3 has several notable upgrades, including enhanced AI features powered by Google Cloud. Functions such as an AI Eraser for photos, and Face to Face Translation make this device a truly practical workhorse; plus add on an Anti-scratch NanoCrystal Shield, IPX8 Waterproof rating, HONOR Notes and other AI-empowered Human-centric Eye-comfort Innovations, this is the foldable to beat.

Above: The HONOR Magic V3 camera system is housed within an octagon dome.

The camera system is housed within an octagon dome, which is sophisticated, and stands out from similar smartphones. The Triple Rear Camera comprises a 40MP Ultra Wide lens (f/2.2), a 50MP Wide Camera (F/1.6) and a 50MP Telephoto lens (f/3.0). We really like that the telephoto lens has been upgraded, and this is great for bringing faraway subjects closer, resulting in tighter portraits with a nicer framing and bokeh.

Shooting landscapes are also a breeze — with the phone folded or unfolded. At a recent event, we captured these shots from the Royal Marina Bay Penthouse at the Mandarin Oriental hotel:

Everyday objects are also a quick snap away, with the phone folded, and held in one hand:

Above: bicycles, shot on honor magic v3.

Above: bag on chair, shot on honor magic v3.

The HONOR Magic V3 is the brand’s flagship, and is fitted with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 66W wired and 50W wireless charging, 12GB+512GB memory, and even a large 20MP front camera should you require to use it for video calls. It’s a suitable smartphone for both daily and business use.

Above: the large display of the honor magic v3 when unfolded.

Above: even being so slim, the honor magic v3 is fitted with an ultra-large third-generation honor silicon-carbon battery with a capacity of 5150mah.

And because it’s a foldable phone, you’ll enjoy its functionality when fully opened flat with a large display, or half folded to stand on a table. You’ll love that this foldable is pocketable, glamorous, and is a sharp shooter.

For the campaign, OPPO Singapore invited 12 families which included the founders of PurelyAdoptions, the President of the Cat Welfare Society, volunteers, caregivers, and adopters to share their heartwarming stories, emphasising the importance of only fulfilling a pet’s physical needs but also establishing a profound emotional connection with them.

In addition to this, OPPO Singapore has also created stickers using the AI Smart Image Matting feature which allows stickers to be made at a simple tap of the finger, effectively separating pet portraits from the photos’ cluttered backgrounds.

This have since been distributed with purchases made on online channels as an important reminder of compassion towards all living beings including stray animals.

Amara Sanctuary Sentosa collaborates with architectural design studio, FARM, to transform the resort’s interiors

Amara Sanctuary Sentosa updates its spaces to pay homage to the island’s maritime heritage as a former military fortress, as well as the estate’s 100-year legacy. The resort’s interior has been refreshed and transformed by design studio, FARM, which is known to take a holistic spatial approach to their projects.

With Amara Sanctuary Sentosa, FARM interweaves contemporary aesthetics with biophilic elements; there’s rampant use of natural materials, including indigenous stone, venerable timber, and reclaimed wood upcycled from traditional fishing vessels. The resulting design reflects the property’s tranquil surroundings, while rejuvenating the accommodation to attract guests back to the vicinity.

SUPERMAMA brings a part of Singapore’s rich heritage into your homes

You’ve probably heard of SUPERMAMA after they went viral for their original magic cup which was inspired by then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his national addresses to Singaporeans, when he would take a sip from the little blue cup before changing languages.

More than recreating the “magic, language changing cup”, SUPERMAMA is a design brand and museum store that has become an integral part of Singapore’s cultural landscape, renowned for ‘Singapore Blue’, a distinctive line of cobalt blue and white porcelain wares that was also awarded the President’s Design Award.

Since the birth of the brand in 2010, SUPERMAMA has worked with over 100 Singaporean designers, artists and Japanese craft facilities to carefully curate items of different artistic perspectives that narrate the Singapore story.

Here’s a look at some of these products.

Year of the Dragon | Temple of Skate x Kihara Porcelain

As a powerful symbol intricately woven in into the cultural fabric of Singapore, the dragon represents strength, prosperity and good fortune. The original artwork behind the design was created with Sumi ink on rice paper which showcases fluid and precise brushwork reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy.

The plate, designed by Temple of Skate is created by Singaporean artist Tucks (Tuck Wai) and draws inspiration from the Japanese ukiyo-e painting style.

The Year of the Dragon | Temple of Skate x Kihara PORCELAIN PLATE is priced at S$120.

Celebrate the Peranakan culture during your stay at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong

As part of the celebration for Singapore’s National Day earlier this August, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong had introduced an exclusive “Peranakan Dress Up Experience” in collaboration with Rumah Kim Choo to pay homage to the Peranakan heritage of the Joo Chiat/Katong area.

Image courtesy of IHG Hotels and Resorts.

We were recently invited by Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong to experience the Peranakan dress up for ourselves with a 2D1N stay at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, which is located next to i12 Katong and sits on the historic site of the former Joo Chiat Police Station.

The Peranakan Dress Up Experience is priced from S$390 and includes:

    • Breakfast for 2 at Baba Chews Bar and Eatery
    • S$50 nett dining credits per night, non-accumulative for Baba Chews Bar and Eatery, or Hotel Indigo Garden, or Rooftop 88
    • 1 hour Peranakan dress up experience for 2 at Rumah Kim Choo (photographer not included)
    • 1 complimentary parking coupon per stay

Unlike other hotels in the vicinity, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong prides itself in its Peranakan inspiration, which is evident in its architectural design and curated art within the hotel.

Image courtesy of IHG Hotels and Resorts.

Each room had also been intentionally designed to reflect the rich heritage and vibrant spirit of the Katong neighbourhood, offering a harmonious blend of colours in the interior of the room, with floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light, and spacious bathrooms which includes a unique bathtub shaped like those of the past.

We particularly liked the nice subtle touch of nostalgia, which was reflected in the little knick knacks in the room such as the cups, the pot for the bath salt, and the little spittoon under the sink.

In addition to being a getaway for humans, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong is also a pet-friendly boutique hotel, which is perfect for pet owners looking to have a little staycation with their furry friends!

Image courtesy of IHG Hotels and Resorts.

Aside from being able to explore the culturally rich neighbourhood, the hotel also provides a few dining options which include Baba Chews Bar and Eatery.

Having lived near the Katong neighbourhood almost my whole life, I’ve always wanted to try the food at Baba Chews, knowing that it had a contemporary fusion menu that offers Asian dishes with a modern twist.

Dry Bak Kut Teh.

Off the specially curated menu, we were exceptionally blown away by the Dry Bak Kut Teh, which did not have any sort of herbal taste and was all-round flavourful. The pork ribs were also done well as it slid off the bone and made it easy to eat.

Churros.

Another winning dish for us was the Churros that came paired with Blue Pea Ice Cream and Pandan Dulce.

Despite it being a common dessert, what won us over was the Pandan Dulce, which gave us all the pandan flavour we craved without coming off overtly sweet. It gave a nice balance with the cinnamon dusted churros and offered us a real sweet ending to our delicious meal.

PERANAKAN DRESS UP EXPERIENCE

As part of our stay, we were treated to a Peranakan Dress Up Experience at Rumah Kim Choo, which is located just across the road from the hotel. Being the daughter of a half-Peranakan, I knew I had to have my mother participate in this memorable experience since she no longer had any of her Nyonya outfits with her.

When we arrived at the location, it was a little confusing to actually locate where it was we needed to go to get the costumes. There was no proper check-in area and the whole process took us more than 10 minutes to get someone to help us with the costumes.

Prior to the selection of the costumes, we were also asked how long we intended to take with the photoshoot even though we were entitled to an hour. Although I know we probably won’t take as long, it didn’t feel like it was an experience but more like a rental of space.

We had also thought that the experience was for two but was told by the staff that only one person could wear the costume, so I made the decision for my mom to experience it instead.

The selection of costumes was also not a very pleasant experience as there were no ready costumes with sizes available for us to pick out. Instead, the staff was pulling out various tops, in my mother’s size, asking her if she preferred this colour or that.

While I could appreciate that it meant the costumes were brand new, it felt a little haphazard and made us more conscious in choosing the right ones so that we don’t have to make her open anymore new ones.

We felt that having no one seemingly dedicated for the dress up experience made it messy and we often had to wait on the staff to come help us after she was done with customers.

We don’t know if that added to more hastiness to get us on our way as well because after my mother was dressed, we were asked to head up for the photoshoot — without the beaded slippers to complete her look.

Having already felt hustled to begin our photoshoot, we made the decision to do away with the footwear and dive into the photoshoot.

To clarify, the photoshoot did not include a photographer and all photos had to be taken with your own camera or smartphone. This wasn’t a dealbreaker for us since I had wanted to photograph my mother in her heritage costume.

Despite all the hiccups we experienced, the time we had upstairs doing the photoshoot was actually quite nice and we each had fun as the photographer and model, as part of the second level was decked with Peranakan interior from the past.

It was especially heartwarming to see my mom smile as she recalls certain things that looked familiar to her from her childhood, and just how happy she was to be connecting with her Peranakan roots again.

The Peranakan Dress Up Experience is priced from S$390 per night. You can enjoy an exclusive 20% off the experience for bookings made from now to 30 September 2024, for stays from now to 31 December 2024.

In Support of Miss Universe Singapore 2024…

Beauty pageants have historically never had great support in Singapore (apart from the year 1987 when Miss Universe was held here). Correct me if I’m wrong, but the general sentiment is that Singaporeans don’t place importance on beauty competitions; our way of life is to focus on work, studies, and to plan a nest egg for retirement. And of course there’s nothing wrong with that — it’s this “way of life” that makes us practical, and well-known to be smart. But at the same time, global pageants carry on… and when they call for entries, why wouldn’t we want representation.

Above: behind the scenes at 1880 singapore, getting ready for the miss universe singapore 2024 press conference on 28 august.

The most prestigious of these pageants is Miss Universe, and just yesterday, the press conference was held to introduce the 15 finalists that will compete to represent Singapore for 2024. This year is also the first time NYLON SINGAPORE is partnering with the pageant (with any pageant, in fact), and this move by the Miss Universe Singapore organisation signals to us their desire for a change in direction; an edgier, more “real” perspective, if you will. And this comes in the wake of the changing rules for participation. The only rule to audition this year, is to be at least 18 years old. There’s no limit on age (in previous years, participants had to be younger than 29), plus marital status doesn’t matter anymore too.

With these relaxed rules, this year we see a diverse cast, including a married transgender woman, a divorced mother, and a 34-year-old. Inclusion is always great, but what would be greater, would be support for them. Being in a beauty competition is hard enough — and one would argue that, yes, once these girls join, they open themselves up for critique. But as a society, and a human being, let’s not be mean. Beauty pageants always bring with them online vitriol. For the keyboard warrior, this may be entertaining, but for the participants and their families, it’s just cruel.

I’ve met each of these finalists in person to shoot their official portraits, and every one of them stands a fair and equal chance of winning this competition and representing Singapore in Mexico this November. Let’s please support them positively with kind words. These are brave girls who have chosen to put themselves out there for scrutiny, and to use the Miss Universe platform to share their stories. They may not be olympic athletes, but one of them will still be representing our country in a famous global competition, so let’s hold back our criticism this year and lend words of kindness and support instead. Unlike our regional neighbours like Thailand and the Philippines, we aren’t a nation that places weight on pageants; but we can still place weight on kindness. If the pageant can change their mindset about who can take part, then so should we.
