Are you ready to scream your heart out and feel the chills tingling down your spine? Dubbed Southeast Asia’s biggest Halloween event, Universal Studios Singapore invites you to experience nightmare-inducing thrills at its 12th edition of Halloween Horror Nights.

Running across 18 select event nights from 27 September to 2 November, this year’s Halloween Horror Nights will feature four all-new immersive haunted houses, three terrifying scare zones, and three hair-raising shows themed after dark dreams which will transport you to a realm where dreams and nightmares co-exist, blurring the lines between what’s real and what is imagined.

This edition will also debut two brand new experiences — a spine-chilling projection mapping show that features phantoms of Asian folklore, and a blood-curdling speakeasy experience aimed at tantalising your senses.

HAUNTED HOUSES

Since the announcement of Netflix’s Sweet Home as the first haunted house, another three is set to be added with a focus on Asian horror.

These include Singapore’s Most Haunted: The Killings which recreates the horrors of one of Singapore’s most haunted houses, and Cursed Scrolls: Dynasty of Darkness which is an immersive 3D experience filled with evil entities of the ancient scrolls that have been conjured by The Schoolmaster, a possessed Qing Dynasty scholar.

More details for the fourth and final haunted house will be revealed at a later date.

While heading to your next haunted house, don’t forget to walk through Halloween Horror Nights’ three scare zones namely Vampire Alley with its vampires hiding in the dark; The Lost Kampung, with its vengeful spirits and cursed items; and Nether-Land, where you get to rave with the undead who have been hypnotised by voodoo vibes and beats to die for.

LIVE SHOWS

Another thing to experience at Halloween Horror Nights are its live shows that include Ocu.lar’s Rave, a dance performance, and the all-new Night Terrors, a projection mapping show which transforms a fortress into a haunted haven for the phantoms of Asian folklore.

For those looking to relax while enjoying a show, Dark Dreams at the Pantages Theatre features elaborate sets and special effects that will tell the twisted story of the Dream Reaper who feeds off the nightmares of innocent people to steal their souls.

IMMERSIVE SPEAKEASY

Dior launches Plan de Paris makeup collection for Fall 2024

For the first-time ever, Dior’s new makeup creations are decorated with the Plan de Paris pattern, a line drawing with multiple details of a map of Paris viewed from above, inspired by a 1950s archive silk scarf.

Celebrating the energy of Paris in the day and night, the collection features palettes, lipsticks and nail polishes in shades of silver, gold, pink and blue as a nod to the enchanting City of Lights that has continued to inspired the House of Dior ever since it was founded.

The pieces in the collection are also reminiscent of the historic sites that link the capital and the House of Dior.

Here’s a look at the collection.

DIORSHOW 5 COULEURS

Housed in Plan de Paris pouches, the four palettes (S$140 each), feature an embossed pattern inspired by the signature Dior logo band. Their limited-edition colour harmonies also pay tribute to the City of Lights with an exclusive ultra-shimmer finish.

The 083 30 Montaigne palette features new shades of a tender pink, a mirror-like silver, a metallic anthracite, a velvet black, and a pearlescent green, while the 173 L’Étoile explores accords of luminous, lamé, and midnight blues combined with a peachy pink around the central platinum-gold shade.

[CLICK ON THE IMAGES FOR MORE.]

If you’re looking for warmer colour palettes, the 663 Saint-Honoré features a vibrant, shimmering warm gold, a pink with a hint of bronze, a sparkling coral, and a matte brick orange surrounding a satiny tangerine heart.

Another warm choice is the 983 Champs-Élysées which plays on the colours found in the sunset light — a satiny beige, a purple lamé, a bronze pink, a deep plum, and a rosy pearl.

DIORSHOW STYLO

The ultra-creamy texture of Diorshow Stylo (S$44 each) allows for it to easily glide onto the eyelid to create a precise line that accentuates the eyes with intense colour like the shimmering pink of the 836 Pearly Rose and the metallic blue of the 196 Pearly Cobalt.

ROGUE DIOR

Reformulated by Peter Philips in 2024, this Rouge Dior (S$70) features the Place de l’Étoile and the Arc de Triomphe engraved onto the bullet of the lipstick in meticulous detail, and is available in four shades — satiny 356 Coral Avenue, satin pink 326 Champs de Roses, 720 Icone with its blend of brownish pink and deep blue undertone, and 100 Nude Look, which combines soft beige with a hint of rose.

DIOR VERNIS

With formula created by the Dior laboratories, new colours to the Dior Vernis (S$46 each) include 207 Blue Star for a violet and lilac look, 001 30 Montaigne for an opaline pearl shade, 887 Triomphe for an electric aubergine with a shimmering deep purple, and 537 Saint-Honoré for an elegant brick orange.

The Plan de Paris Collection is now available at all Dior Beauty boutiques and counters, and ONLINE at the Dior Beauty Online Boutique.

Travelling with the Tumi Rolling Trunk that opens like a wardrobe

For the past year, for any trip longer than five days, I’ve been travelling with one particular suitcase, and now it’s hard to imagine switching to anything else because this trunk is almost everything I’ve dreamed of.

Meet Tumi’s Rolling Trunk — a check-in size suitcase that has built-in, collapsible shelves, compression straps and zippered covers on both sides. It’s rare to find any modern luggage with shelving, so this was a pleasant discovery when I walked in to Tumi’s store at Mandarin Gallery mid last year. It took me a few months to decide to finally get this (at $2,800, it’s quite an investment), but I’ve had no regrets since, and everyone I’ve showed this to is amazed by it.

Above: the Tumi ROLLING TRUNK at QT Melbourne Hotel. It stands 87cm in height and has an 86L capacity, which can hold more than a week’s worth of travel clothes and essentials.

The Rolling Trunk is part of Tumi’s 19 Degree Aluminum collection, which features the brand’s signature contours that are sculpted at 19 degrees on aircraft-grade alunimum, creating a striking design that’s resilient to all forms of travel. The extendable handle is also made from the same material, making it exceptionally strong. This suitcase looks and feels sturdy, and has handles on both its top and side for easy carrying when needed. And like all the other products in Tumi’s 19 Degree Aluminum collection, this trunk is fitted with 4 dual spinner wheels that are extremely smooth and a joy to use. They glide across floors effortlessly and turn in any direction with ease.

Above: the Tumi ROLLING TRUNK at ace hotel sydney.

This trunk looks great, and protects my things well. It’s not too big that I can’t carry it up and down stairs, but its size can easily fit up to 10 days worth of things.

Its stand-out feature for me are really the shelves. With shelves, I can keep my luggage upright without the need to unpack at the hotel. It’s a portable wardrobe where all my things are perfectly organised and in easy reach. I don’t even need to use packing cubes anymore. I just fold my clothes and place it on the shelf.

One superb benefit of being able to keep my luggage upright, is that I obviously never need to lie it flat down on its side. This means I can easily open the trunk and access my belongings, even in the middle of a busy airport or hotel lobby. Furthermore, it takes up far less floor space in a hotel room, and because it’s not lying flat on its side, there’s less contact with the hotel’s carpet and hence less chance of bed bugs crawling into my suitcase.

Above: the Tumi ROLLING TRUNK at ace hotel sydney.

Speaking of bed bugs, hard-shelled luggage has fewer folds, seams and places for these creepy crawlies to hide in. They prefer soft spots, which means you’re more likely to bring them home with fabric suitcases. I do also like that the Rolling Trunk comes in a gleaming silver finish — this lighter colour makes it easier to inspect and spot bugs, and to clean them off.

The shelves in the Rolling Trunk are also collapsible; so if you have larger or longer items like high boots, you can simply fold one or all of these shelves down to create more space.

Above: the Tumi ROLLING TRUNK at ace hotel sydney.

When I have months between my trips, the trunk turns into handy storage for the home. The family’s winter wear like coats, scarves and Heattech take up one side of the luggage, while the other neatly holds travel pouches, toiletry kits and other travel essentials. And yes, I keep it standing up like a wardrobe because it takes up less floor space, I can easily access my things, and it looks really good as part of the home decor.

Above: the tumi rolling trunk comes with 2 tsa integrated combination locks, a push button to open, and a complimentary monogram service.
The Tumi ROLLING TRUNK is priced at $2,800 and available at Tumi stores and online at TUMI.SG.

Apple celebrates South East Asian creatives and their determination to turn passion into reality

Apple’s “Here’s to the Dreamers” returns for a second year to honour exceptional South East Asian talents and celebrate their passion, creativity and determination to leave a mark on the world with their unique visions.

The campaign will showcase creatives, developers and artists who have challenged norms and share their stories of success across the App Store, Apple Music and Apple TV, in an effort to inspire everyone to start realising their own dreams.

Joan Low. (Image courtesy of Apple Singapore)

One of these Indie developers is Joan Low, the founder and CEO of ThoughtFull Chat, who had left her banking job to devote herself full-time to her app after she was profoundly impacted by her experience taking care of a loved one battling mental health challenges.

Speaking with NYLON Singapore, Ms Low shared that ThoughtFull Chat is “more than just an app” as it is a comprehensive platform designed to support mental health proactively.

“It connects users with certified mental health professionals for text and video therapy and offers self-serve tools and learning packs which encourage and foster daily engagement — our goal is to make mental health care accessible and effective for everyone, anywhere and at any time.”

Ms Low also told us that the idea for ThoughtFull Chat emerged from “a blend of frustration and hope” — frustration over the gaps in accessible mental health solutions and hope from the advancements in digital mental health initiatives overseas.

She said: “When it comes to solving the world’s biggest problems, what matters is not just your degree but more importantly, it is the ability to observe what is around you, think critically about problems, as well as have the resourcefulness and grit to execute ably.

Here’s more on how she brought her idea to life.

Hi Joan! How long did it take you to develop ThoughtFull Chat?

Joan: ThoughtFull’s journey from the app’s start to launch is unique – for 18 months, we did a lot of groundwork running mental health workshops for thousands of consumers and corporates alike to understand the user journey before designing and developing ThoughtFull Chat. In order to know how to design an app that can seamlessly deliver mental healthcare, we needed to know where the gaps were in the mental health ecosystem — from who provides the services, to who pays for it, who consumes it, and how they consume it.

Getting ThoughtFullChat launched on Apple’s App store was first choice for us because of our alignment in security and data protection. Incumbent on developers operating in the healthcare space is the responsibility to uphold ourselves to the highest standards of privacy and data security and we are glad that we took this path forward.

What were some of the challenges that you faced during the development of the app?

J: From our 18 months of groundwork, we discovered just how fragmented the entire mental health ecosystem was. Identifying and addressing these gaps were crucial to bring seamless care into the app. In healthcare, the perennial question revolves around balancing tech-driven approaches with human care and heart. Our extensive groundwork, coupled with real-world experience in caregiving, enabled us to find that perfect balance, ensuring that our technology enhances rather than replaces the human element.

Today, this understanding still drives our product development. We strive to conduct ourselves ThoughtFully, ensuring that every update and new feature continues to bridge any gaps in care and maintains the delicate balance between technology and personal touch. This ongoing effort ensures that ThoughtFull Chat remains a leader in providing comprehensive and compassionate mental health solutions.

What do you hope to achieve with this app?

J: ThoughtFullChat simplifies the mental health journey for your personal and professional growth by providing seamless access to self-serve tools, wellbeing assessments, asynchronous text-based therapy, video therapy, and 24/7 hotlines.

In this ever-changing world, our personal and professional growth journeys do not have to happen in silos. Lean into tools and communities that can empower you to fulfil your full potential at that specific season in your life. At ThoughtFullChat, we hope to be your daily companion throughout these seasons in your life – with our app available in 12 languages and our mental health professional network available in up to 21 different languages and dialects, we strive to constantly improve and serve you wherever you are.

What advice can you share with aspiring app developers?

J: For anyone stepping into the world of app development, my primary piece of advice is to stay true to your vision and be prepared to navigate the hurdles that come with bringing a dream to life. My journey with ThoughtFullChat began not just as a business venture, but as a personal mission driven by my experiences and a desire to fill a gap in mental health support.

Throughout this process, the key was to not lose sight of the ‘why’ behind the endeavour. It’s easy to get caught up in the technicalities and challenges, but remembering your purpose can guide you through tough decisions and inspire innovation. This aligns with the spirit of the Here’s to the Dreamers campaign, which celebrates those who dare to dream and take actionable steps towards realising those dreams.

Embrace the uncertainties and use them as opportunities to learn and grow. Surround yourself with a team that shares your passion and complements your skills. Most importantly, never underestimate yourself – know that you have the resilience and wherewithal to realize your dream, naysayers be gone.

You can find ThoughtFull Chat HERE on the App Store.

LOCAL NANYANG COFFEE ROASTERY TOUR

As part of our programme, we were treated to a unique experience visiting a local Nanyang coffee roastery where we witnessed coffee roasting first-hand.

Arrived at Kim Guan Guan.

Located at the JTC Bedok Food City in Bedok North, Kim Guan Guan Coffee was first established in 1988 and has been around for more than 30 years as a certified roastery in Singapore and supplier of quality traditional coffee powder.

It was no surprise then, as we all disembarked the mini van for the tour, that the smell of coffee roasting lingered in the air even before we stepped foot into the roastery.

Coffee roasting machines at Kim Guan Guan.

The tour began with a short introduction into the history of Kim Guan Guan and its origin before we stepped into the roasting floor where we were greeted by huge machines that were responsible for roasting the coffee beans into Kim Guan Guan’s signature roast.

One of the fun facts that we learned during the tour was how the machines were actually assembled by founder Jason Soon and his team, and not the professionals who had been unable to travel to Singapore from Malaysia during the pandemic.

Coffee beans before and after they have been roasted.

Aside from seeing the staff go about their duties, we also saw how the coffee beans, in their original state, were sifted through a machine to distinguish the good and bad beans, before they were sent through a pipe to the roasting machines.

The next step in the roasting process was grinding them down into coffee powder. Unlike coffee beans which you find available for sale outside which you can roast at home, Kim Guan Guan’s coffee beans had to be grinded down using professional industrial machines.

This is because the beans have been hardened during the caramelised stage and would actually break a normal home coffee grinder.

Mr Jason Soon “pulling” coffee.

The tour took about 30 minutes and concluded with a special coffee tasting session on the second floor of the roastery, where Mr Soon prepared coffee — the traditional way — for us, using the stainless steel pots that are reminiscent of coffee-brewing in the yesteryears.

Mr Soon and his son preparing coffee for the participants.

As the craft of kopi-pulling is no longer common at coffee shops in Singapore, it was truly a memorable sight to see Mr Soon and his son taking turns to “pull” the coffee as they made Kopi-O Kosong and Kopi for us to try using their traditional roast coffee powder.

Unlike a Western cup of black coffee with no sugar, Kim Guan Guan’s traditional cup of Kopi Kosong not only tasted less bitter and acidic but had a tinge of a butter after taste, thanks to the margarine that was added into the coffee beans during the roasting process.

Tools required to “pull” our own coffee.

After the taste test, we were invited to try our hands at “Kopi Pulling”.

While it looked incredibly easy to do for Mr Soon and his son, it was a challenge for us to replicate, especially when there were quite a few factors to consider when attempting to create the perfect cuppa Nanyang coffee.

A lot of us ended up either spilling our coffee during the “pull” or steeping our coffee for too long but we definitely found it an enjoyable experience that only made us appreciate this traditional cup of coffee even more.

The tour is completely free and only has limited slots available. To book, you will need to email marketing@kimguanguan.com three days in advance to book your slots. A minimum of 5 pax is needed to form a tour.
Enjoy an additional 5% off with “Rediscover Singapore” offer rates when you book a room at Citadines Rochor or other Citadines properties from now till 30 September (for stays between 1 and 31 October).

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 review: Possibly their best version of the Z Flip phones

As an Apple girlie, who had her first iPhone (the OG iPhone 3G) in secondary school, I’ve never considered jumping onto the android bandwagon until my recent hands-on experience with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6.

Not only was I blown away by the compact design of the device, I was sold on the Galaxy AI features which were not only smart but was easily an extra tool to make my daily tasks more productive.

AESTHETICALLY PLEASING

While I had always toyed with the possibility of switching from an iOS phone to an android flip phone, I always found it particularly hard to be convinced because of the seemingly visible line where the device folds.

Less obvious folding edge.
When watching a video, the folding edge is almost non-existent.

When I first got my hands on the Galaxy Z Flip6, I was immediately drawn to the folding edge which was almost invisible. Now when I watch videos on the device, when opened, I no longer get irritated with seeing the folding edge in the middle which is brilliant as that used to be my biggest pet peeve with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip models.

The display opens to a 6.7-inch screen and when closed, it is a 3.4-inch display.
The flat aluminium edges gives the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 a sleek look.

Even though the Galaxy Z Flip6 still looks similar to its predecessor, it now has an updated straight edge design which gives it a more modern and sleek look.

I received the peach unit, an online-only colour, which I initially didn’t like but I did get around to appreciating the colour combination of silver and peach once I saw how the flat aluminium edges gave it a more uniformed and premium feel.

GALAXY AI FEATURES

One of the Samsung Galaxy AI features that I particularly loved was the Interpreter which essentially worked like an in-built Google Translate, except instead of typing, I could easily use it to translate a conversation that was happening in real time.

The Interpreter at work.

Similar to the feature when used on the Samsung Galaxy Fold6, the Flip6 is able to replicate the ease of conversation between two people by using the FlexWindow to display the dialogue as well. So, instead of having to share or pass the phone from one person to the other to make the translation, the Flip6 makes it more convenient to have a conversation between two people without the language barrier.

Though I did not take this to try with a real life stranger who did not speak my language, I roped in my Korean friend to exchange a few words with me in her native tongue.

The Interpreter works when the device is in its flex mode; making it more natural to have a conversation.

While the translation mostly worked, there were times when the interpreter did not deliver and had given us translations that misrepresented what we were trying to say. This, of course, was not a huge issue for me as like any machine learning software, this would be something that gets improved upon over time.

Another AI feature of the device that I particularly enjoyed was the Sketch to Image function.

As a non-artistic person, I can never draw something the way I envisioned it in my mind. However, this all changed when I tried using this feature to bring my drawing of a dog to life.

In exchange for my inept drawing, Sketch to Image offered me AI suggestions of what they think I drew, adding colours and expressions that gave the artwork more depth.

While this feature could also be used to personalise a photo taken, I did encounter some issues when it came to detecting the drawing on the photo, especially when I tried to add a ribbon or a hat to the head.

FLEXCAM AUTO ZOOM

The rear cameras on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6.

I really enjoyed taking photos using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 with their newly upgraded 50MP camera which produced sharper and more vividly coloured photos.

I found myself choosing to take photos the hands-free way more often, using the FlexCam and the Auto Zoom feature instead of the traditional way with the device opened fully.

Using the Auto Zoom feature on the FlexWindow.

Like everyone else, I often get frustrated when I try to take photographs of my surroundings because there are limitations to how my iPhone 15 Pro Max takes photographs — which is either through a selfie or having to position my phone at some angle to take in my background, or getting a stranger to take my photo.

But, with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6, I have found the perfect solution to my photography woes.

Launching the camera app through the FlexWindow, I am able to select the Auto Zoom feature which is essentially a hassle-free way for me to take a photo as it automatically adjusts the zoom levels based on AI-enabled recognition to help frame my photo so that my background along with my face and body is captured nicely.

Here’s a look at the photos I took using my current iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6.

With the Z Flip6, my photo came out sharp with brighter colours as compared to the photo taken with the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s selfie camera, which came out grainy and had more muted colours.

The best part about this is that the images are not captured with the selfie camera, like other smartphones, but using the rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6!

LONG BATTERY LIFE

Built with the Galaxy Z Flip’s longest lasting battery, the Galaxy Z Flip6 houses a 4000 mAh battery which promises long lasting performance, all day long.

I was initially skeptical about the battery performance but was pleasantly surprised when I found that the battery of the Z Flip did not deplete as much as my iPhone 15 Pro Max would after a day of heavy usage. In fact, over the course of my test period of the device, I only had to charge it three times as compared to a daily charge for my own phone.

The battery performance is supported by the first-ever Vapor Chamber on the Galaxy Z Flip which helps to keep things cool and running smoothly while dissipating heat quickly.

While this may be true in some aspects, I have found that the portion with the FlexWindow does heat up fairly quickly and don’t often dissipate as quickly as expected, especially when the AI features are being utilised.

IS THE SAMSUNG GALAXY Z FLIP6 WORTH IT?

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 in peach.

Having used the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 for almost two weeks, I am 85% convinced that a change might be in the horizon for me. It is the first Android device that I have felt very strongly about, even though I am heavily embedded in the Apple ecosystem.

While I might still take some time to actually make the jump, the Z Flip6 is definitely a good device to consider if you are in the market for a foldable smartphone that is reliable and utilises AI to make your everyday more productive.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is priced from S$1,648 and is available at Samsung Experience Stores, local telecommunication operators, selected consumer electronics & IT online stores, and the SAMSUNG ONLINE Store.

The HONOR 200 Pro Smartphone boasts a Studio-level Portrait Camera with an AI Portrait Engine

If you know your smartphones, you would have read or heard that HONOR is known to have really good camera systems in their devices; and with each new launch from the brand, the cult following for HONOR just grows.

The latest series to launch is the HONOR 200, which includes the HONOR 200 Pro that holds one of the highest specs for a smartphone; we’re talking Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, 6.78-inch AMOLED Quad-curved Floating Display, 120Hz refresh rate, 5200mAh battery, 100W Wired HONOR SuperCharge, 66W Wireless HONOR SuperCharge, Reverse Charging Support, and both a 50MP main camera as well as selfie camera.

The HONOR 200 Pro is made in what the brand calls, a “Natural Artistic Design”, and it comes in Moonlight White and Ocean Cyan (featured here). The back features two textures, both of which are impervious to fingerprints.

Above: The rear camera system.

The rear camera features a 50MP (f/1.9) Portrait Main Camera, a 50MP (f/2.4) Telephoto Camera, and a 12MP (f/2.2) Ultra-wide and Macro Camera. These are decent specs for any new smartphone camera launch today, but HONOR also throws in an AI Portrait Engine, which enhances shadows and highlights, and other optical effects suitable for the picture taken.

Taking portraits with the HONOR 200 Pro is a breeze. Just select “portrait mode”, focus on the subject’s face, and snap away. The AI Portrait Engine runs automatically in the background, and will help you take the best picture in the given lighting.

Here’s an example of a portrait taken at night after a dinner food tasting. We approached Chef Steven from SIRI HOUSE to pose for us, and here’s an example of HONOR’s Light Enhancement at work:

The best way to test any camera system is by the way it handles low light situations and to adapt to them. The HONOR 200 Pro recognises ambient lighting conditions and captures photos accordingly.

We also cycled down East Coast late at night and captured the following photos:

As it stands, HONOR has proven that it’s a strong contender in the smartphone market with its super thin HONOR Magic V2 foldable — and now again with the HONOR 200 Pro. Photos and portraits taken with the HONOR 200 Pro are undeniably good. We also can’t get over how fast the battery on this smartphone charges. There are also AI capabilities that rival those from larger, dominant brands (this is a full-fledged Android device after all).

As an avid photographer, author and advocate for women’s issues across a spectrum of needs and situations, Dr Chua’s second photographic book features 100 photographic portraits and stories of women in Singapore from all types of professions, vocations, labour as well as different ages and ethnicities alongside texts written by the doctor that shares the inspiring stories of each woman.

A bonus feature of the book is the 101st portrait of a migrant domestic worker who is a representation of home help, without whom many women may not be able to return or contribute to the workforce.

Dr Chua made these women the subject of her portraits as she was amazed by how they have led their lives and evolved their own identities while balancing responsibilities, work, relationships and their passions; with some occupying multiple roles at once.

These portraits directs focus to the motivations and attributes that have bolstered these special women, who have in their unique ways, been “holding up the sky” in Singapore.

In developing her portraits, Dr Chua kept her approach simple by shooting her subjects in ambient lighting without additional lighting or effects. She also kept the process collaborative, ensuring that she discusses and selects a location for the shoot that is meaningful to each of her subject.

Similar to her earlier publication, Dr Chua’s upcoming book is a fundraising book project that will be accompanied by an exhibition display where proceeds would go to benefit both the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations, for their Star Shelter program and their program supporting girls and women facing online bullying or harassment, as well as women-led art projects by The Private Museum.
