As someone who has always been afraid of the dentist, oral care has been a concern of mine especially when it comes to brushing my teeth. Of course, this meant always trying to keep teeth clean with my traditional and manual toothbrush — where I could control the speed and strength of my toothbrush.
With an irrational fear of gums bleeding, I’ve always resisted the idea of using an electric toothbrush because I was worried about leaving all types of control to the toothbrush; which would make it impossible for me to negate the chances of a possible bleeding outcome.
I eventually made the decision to try an electric toothbrush after a recent trip to the dentist widened my perspective on this dental tool.
The CloseUp Sonic Expert
While there is a lot of electric toothbrushes on the market, I did not want to make a heavy investment just yet and instead opted to try an affordable option that could be found at Watsons — the CloseUp Sonic Expert.
At $35, CloseUp offers a sonic brush technology with 8x plaque removal and three types of cleaning modes.
The main reason why I chose CloseUp was because of its price point of $35 that makes it a standout option as compared to other electric toothbrushes which are within the $60 to $100 range.
In addition to that, the CloseUp Sonic Expert actually comes with features such as 8x plaque removal, an IPX7 Waterproof rating, 3 types of cleaning modes, and 60-days battery life that can rival those found in a higher-end electric toothbrush.
The affordability also extends to the replacement of the brush heads which, for other electric toothbrushes, would be priced at more than $10. So, instead of having to continuously pay a pricey amount when replacing the brush heads, I only have to pay $8.60 for a pair.
This, is perhaps, what made it a little easier to pick Closeup’s electric toothbrush as my first-ever oral beauty tool.
Unlike other brands which either had a combination of loud or muted colours, the Sonic Expert comes in three gorgeous colours namely pastel pink, pastel green, and black. Compared with other electric toothbrushes, I really liked that the colour scheme extended beyond the body of the toothbrush and applies even to the brush head, making the colours pop and simply catches the eye wherever its placed.
In addition to its exterior design, the Sonic Expert also felt lightweight, giving me a similar hold to that of a manual toothbrush. I was surprised by this because I had the impression that electric toothbrushes would often have a heavier body to account for the built-in battery — which is able to offer 60 days of battery life.
The weight of this electric toothbrush definitely made it easier for me to get used to it as I did not feel like I needed to adjust the way I held my toothbrush.
I liked that the brush head came with 0.1mm ultra-thin bristles too, which felt soft and gentle on my sensitive gums despite the pressure from the vibrations when in use. This helped to dispel any sort of anxieties about my gums bleeding.
How it fares
One of the major issues that I’ve always grappled with when using traditional toothbrush is the duration of each brushing session, which often sees me paying too much attention to the back teeth and neglecting the front, or ending my brushing just under two minutes.
As a result of this, my dentist would often nag about the plaque build-up that I would have on the front teeth, which should be of equal if not more importance during brushing.
With the Sonic Expert, I was able to handle this major issue thanks to its built-in auto reminder that prompts me to change areas after 30 seconds with short pauses. The best part about it is its scheduled shut off time after two minutes to help ensure that I’ve really gone through brushing my teeth properly.
Coupled with the three brushing modes — Whitening, Clean, Sensitive — the electric toothbrush has also made it easier for me to get comfortable with the vibrations as different modes offer different types of vibrations.
I currently switch between a gentle clean with the Sensitive mode and the Clean mode for a thorough clean.
Final Verdict: The perfect reason to switch to an electric toothbrush
Having dealt with sensitive and inflamed gums from my teenage years, I have not been very confident with my smile. I often envied others with pinkish gums and white teeth, and would try and adopt better brushing methods but to little or no avail.
This, I would attribute, to the difficulty of using a manual toothbrush which would often not be able to reach certain areas of the mouth. However, since using the CloseUp Sonic Expert, I’ve began to notice a difference especially with regard to the plaque build-up.
Previously, while using a manual toothbrush, I would still be able to see the stubborn plaque deposits still present, lining the gums near the front teeth. But now, with the CloseUp electric toothbrush, I start to see a difference with the build-up looking less obvious than before.
The great thing about it is that I no longer have to feel like I need to scrub my teeth just to get the deposits out because the Sonic Expert can do just that without being harsh to the gums.
