First unveiled as a concept at Milan Design Week 2025 under Audio-Technica’s new philosophical framework, analog ~ naturally, the brand’s idea of Hotaru is to bridge the gap between acoustic engineering and visual artistry; transforming any living space into an immersive gallery of light and music.

This all-in-one record player integrates turntable, amplifier and speaker, and is more than just a traditional record player with its ability to levitate — a move made possible by magnetic repulsion.
Named after the Japanese word for “firefly”, Hotaru pays homage to the delicate, fleeting moments of beauty celebrated in Japanese culture through an integrated light display that showcases a 20-shade colour palette in three distinct operational modes.

Basic Mode illuminates the environment in a singular, curated colour block, while Gradient Mode features smooth, fluid transitions across the colour spectrum. Finally, Link Mode dynamically analyses the real-time character of the music to translate sonic frequencies into responsive, shifting hues.
At the heart of Hotaru’s design is the revolutionary magnetic repulsion-based floating structure that suspends the turntable platter in midair, to create a dramatic, gravity-defying visual profile while isolating the playback mechanics from internal and external vibrations.
To help achieve a powerful soundstage within a compact, minimalist footprint, Audio-Technica also engineered a specialised internal housing that maximises speaker capacity.

Built from premium materials, the unit features a meticulously sculpted acrylic body that beautifully diffuses light, alongside a high-grade aluminium case, integrated high-fidelity speakers, and solid brass feet for ultimate stability.
Hotaru comes equipped with a straight, high-rigidity carbon fibre tonearm and a special-specification limited-edition black AT-VM740xML micro linear stereo cartridge too, to track vinyl grooves with extreme accuracy to reproduce the finest acoustic nuances.
