All The Summer 2022 Collections That Give Off Chic Vacation Vibes

Being an island nation, we really ought to embrace beach dressing a whole lot more — so why not dress up in breezy dresses and sandals, with woven raffia tote bags to match? In other words, peak vacation vibes. These designer brands are here for all of that, clichés and all, with house signatures done in new innovative fabrics and patterns, sunset ombrés, and more so you can always bring along a little holiday mood wherever you go.

CHANEL COCO BEACH 2022

CHANEL transports us to the beach with their yearly CHANEL COCO BEACH affair, and for this Parisian house, it’s one filled with a mesmerising sunset and leisurely strolls along the sand. House ambassador and cool-girl Margaret Qualley embodies their ideal summer wardrobe too, in lightweight pink and coral tweed, while the accessories are kept chic in emblematic black and white.

A one-piece swimsuit is laced up with pearls, certainly an ode to the sea, while we see more casual accessories adorned with the coveted double C logo, with plenty of terry cloth-like detailing, or a fun combination of pearls and nets across new bag designs.

The CHANEL COCO BEACH 2022 collection, available in a selection of CHANEL boutiques.

LOEWE PAULA’S IBIZA SPRING/SUMMER 2022

Now, for more of a beach party vibe, LOEWE‘s summery sequin dresses make for a statement, though it’s their line of accessories that we can’t help but lust after, particularly when their signature bags come in playful ombré.

The Puzzle, Hammock, Amazona, Goya and more sport beautiful gradients, a dégradé effect, that mimic the sunsets of Ibiza, while the iconic Anagram is turned into a leather cut-out style on canvas totes. Of course, woven straw and raffia bags abound too and show off the Spanish house’s fine craftsmanship; the Anagram Basket is the summer staple you’ll want, with its handwoven body, calfskin straps, and an embroidered calfskin Anagram.

VERSACE LA VACANZA 2022

Here to turn up the heat is Versace’s La Vacanza collection, made to look “beautiful and seductive”, according to Donatella Versace herself. And she gets it right every time. Expect the Italian house’s barocco prints, for sure, now seen across bikini sets, even more silk shirts, printed silk scarves and swimming trunks.

For fun pops of colour against the sand, the La Medusa mini bag arrives in shades of vibrant blue, yellow, and sea green, while that gilded Medusa medallion hardware wan be found on beach slippers too. Also fun: Baroque flourishes on a pair of Medusa Dimension sliders, which are made from super-lightweight, moulded rubber.

BURBERRY TB SUMMER MONOGRAM

Burberry’s now-classic house code gets even fresher. The TB Summer Monogram, designed by Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci, reflects both past and present in its design, done by merging classic checks with the sleek TB logo for a visually arresting new print, especially when hues of orange are introduced too.

To represent the launch, we see supermodel Gisele Bündchen fronting the campaign, as she poses effortlessly in front of unreleased portraits captured by photographer duo Luigi & Iango ten years ago. Naturally, she makes the monogram style look especially good, whether it’s on swimwear or a silk-blend bomber jacket. The range of pieces include sunglasses and a series of bags too, including the Lola Bag, Freya Tote, and a bucket bag style.

The Burberry TB Summer Monogram collection, available at selected Burberry stores and online.

CELINE PLEIN SOLEIL

CELINE‘s summer series presents more of the classics, though there are beach ensembles of pastel-coloured bouclette cotton, swimwear sets, and light denim separates for avid sun-seekers. What does feel extra summery though are the accessories we are to pair them with.

The Cabas Thais in small or large styles in striped textile and calfskin remind us of beachside carnivals, while CELINE’s Classic Paniers see the hand-braided basket bags with bright and breezy colours on its Triomphe logo. If you’d like to live it up a bit more, there are also luxurious home and outdoor accessories such as a hammock, Finnish keels set and a pétanque set, which has its own little leather bag to hold the metal balls used in the game.

GUCCI TOWARDS THE SUN

“For the warm season”, says Gucci, though we can imagine these ready-to-wear and accessories extending well beyond summer, seeing how we’re essentially living in the tropics. Their signature bags, for instance, feature the GG monogram woven from a raffia-effect material, which instantly give them laidback, picnic-at-the-beach vibes.

Summer patterns such as houndstooth and seersucker are spotted on the GG Marmont and Bamboo silhouettes as well, and we get the best of both worlds with either sleek sandals or chunky platform mules on our feet. All the better to chase the summer sun.

KATE SPADE NEW YORK SUMMER 2022

We get it, not all of us can make it to Sentosa, much less the faraway Mediterranean coastline, which is why Kate Spade New York presents highly practical tote bags for summer in the city — not that they are any less fun though. For a brand known for their whimsical designs, we’d expect fun bag shapes modelled after citrus fruit, for instance, though this season’s extensive collection includes a Manhattan tote done in raffia, straw, and woven stripes that imagine a sunset on your purse.

These striped motifs and raffia material find themselves on other sturdy bags too, while the popular Knott, a more slouchy tote bag silhouette characterised by an elegant knot at the strap, arrives in seasonal colourways of raffia straw stripe, palm fronds, and colourblocking. One must-have for your summer rooftop parties? The Meringue, a cute dumpling-like bag made with soft nappa leather and a braided top handle.

SAINT LAURENT ICARE MAXI SHOPPING BAG

For those who aren’t that keen on colour, there’s always Saint Laurent. Top of our list for summer would be this oversized bag, the Icare Maxi Shopping Bag. Made entirely in soft lambskin, the house’s new It-bag features a flat lozenge quilting, all the more noticeable thanks to its volume.

Then again, there’s still a highly sleek quality to its structure, which you can wear with the sides folded in and held together with an interior gold chain, or flared out for a roomier take. An oversized, sculpted YSL logo goes right in the centre, looking like a piece of jewellery on top of an already-chic accessory. Just look at how Zoë Kravitz styled hers.

From 2 July to 24 August — Leica Galerie Singapore presents Aik Beng Chia’s exhibition: Art ‘R’ Us

I met Aik Beng Chia slightly over a year ago at a gathering for Leica photographers (at The Macallan Boutique, no less). He’s quite a character. He’s quiet, shy, yet makes the effort to ask about you. He’s the best kind of person who speaks his mind, but tries to do so without offending; plus he’s humble. He’s widely known as ABC and is best known for street photography in Singapore. The photographer Munster describes ABC’s work best, “no one who has seen ABC’s photos has ever said that they don’t like them”. It’s true. His photos are interesting and intriguing, just like the man taking them; and starting this weekend, he has a new solo exhibition showing at the Leica Galerie at Raffles Hotel — and trust me, it’s worth checking out.

ABC has steadily been photographing (and documenting) homegrown artists; the characters who have been key players in Singapore’s creative scene. In the teaser picture, we see the renowned Shane Tan, one of Singapore’s finest tattoo artists, who specialises in Japanese-style tattoo designs.

Above: Shane Tan, photographed by Aik Beng Chia.

This photo sets the story and mood for the exhibition, with all the photos taken on the Leica Q2 Monochrom, of which ABC is an ambassador for.

The exhibition is titled, Art ‘R’ Us and will feature a “behind the curtain” look at 12 artists who are makers and creators, and considered the cream of the crop in their respective fields. I’m also pretty excited for it cos I know one of the subjects is the Visual Artist, Sam Lo, who graced our September 2020 cover and according to his Instagram, just got married! Congrats Sam!

To get you excited about this exhibition, here are some behind the scenes shots that we got exclusively from ABC. Enjoy.

Art ‘R’ Us opens to the public from 2 July 2022 to 24 August 2022 at Leica Galerie Singapore, 328 North Bridge Road, #01-20, Singapore 188719.

Review: Getting The Big Picture with the PRISM+ Alpha (AL) TV Series

When local tech brand, PRISM+ came onto the market with their ridiculously affordable TVs, their products were snapped up and constantly sold out. The brand was able to keep prices low by cutting out the “middle man” (ie. distribution channels like physical stores), and creating a basic product with their own proprietary system. Now that PRISM+ has established themselves as a reliable and well-known household name, they’ve expanded their line of televisions to include Android TVs, which allow users to download apps from the vast Google Play Store (there’s more than 5,000 Android apps); and this gamble has paid off — their Q-Series appears to be their most popular line yet, with the largest size (the Q75) being sold out at the time of writing.

Above: An Android TV means you can tap into the Google Play Store to download all your favourite entertainment apps. There’s HBO Go as well (not shown in the pic above). photo courtesy prism+.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE DISPLAY

While the Q-Series offers a 4K viewing experience, PRISM+ took this TV line a step further and released the Alpha (AL) Series, which stands out with an OLED screen. The result is a stunning display that’s remarkably clear, vivid, vibrant and life-like. Check out the swanky ad for the AL-Series:

Watching movies and shows on this gorgeous 4K OLED display is a glorious experience; the colour reproduction is precise, with no traces of backlight blooming, while the motion visuals are super smooth, owing to the Real Motion technology that plays each scene at the highest frame rate possible.

Above: Standard dynamic range vs. high dynamic range. photo courtesy prism+.

I love how slim this new screen is as well; it has what the brand calls a ZeroBezel design, so there’s hardly any bezel at all, which leads to a truly sleek design. The entire TV has a side profile of just 4mm, which allows it to sit flat against the wall and be discreet. I opted for the fixed wall mount which occupies less space than the swivel mount that allows you to turn the TV at various angles (I don’t foresee myself needing this). There are also the standard legs that come packed in the box, so the TV can sit on a console if you have one and prefer not to drill holes in your wall.

Above: PRISM+ AL55 TV on legs. photo courtesy prism+.

And because this TV is so beautiful, if you have the floor space, I’d recommend placing it on the brand’s Kanva Stand, which is a premium metal frame set on tapered beechwood legs, and looks absolutely stunning. This will turn your TV set into a freestanding art piece and it’s not bad at all. If anything, the reviews from happy and satisfied customers on the product’s page will convince you to invest in one.

Above: The Prism+ AL-Series on the Kanva Tripod Stand ($169, left) and Quad Stand ($199, right). Photo taken from prismplus.sg.

YOU CAN GO WIRELESS

A tie-in with Google also connects you to Google Assistant, so you can control the TV with just your voice. If you have an existing smart home ecosystem, you can hook the AL-Series up to that too. Another useful thing is that Chromecast is built-in to the TV so it’s possible to cast photos, videos and music from your smartphone to the large screen.

THERE’S PRETTY BALANCED SOUND

For almost every TV I’ve owned, the built-in sound has been dismal (voices tend to be too soft, while ambient noises like a gun shot or siren are shockingly loud and piercing); when it comes to sound, PRISM+ has done something right with the AL-Series and it’s fairly balanced. The two models (55AL and 65AL)  utilise Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos so you don’t just get quality visuals, but quality spatial sound as well. I appreciate that I can actually hear dialogue without getting shocked by any sudden background noise.

If you want to upgrade your sound, the AL-Series is best paired with one of the new PRISM+ soundbars. There’s the PRISM+ Symphony ($699) and Flow ($249), featuring Dolby Atmos spatial audio and Dolby Audio respectively. They match the AL-Series TV with their sleek aesthetics, and when you crank them up when your friends are over, you’ll get a truly cinematic experience.

Above: PRISM+ AL-Series TV with Flow soundbar. photo courtesy prism+.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Here’s my TV set against the wall:

Above: the AL65 TV is so sleek that only the power cable stands out (which i intend to create trunking for).

It’s been a month of Netflix and HBO Go on this new screen. During the day, the display is really bright; so bright I can watch my shows without any distracting reflections. While at night, the screen is very comfortable to look at, even when the room is completely dark. Some of the visuals on the screen look unreal; it’s so incredibly clear that it feels like the scene is playing out right in front of me in real life. In fact, I can’t imagine TV screens getting any clearer than this.

It’s also quite evident that the AL-Series is priced fairly higher than the brand’s Q-Series (for example the 55″ Q-Series is priced between $799 and $999, while the 55″ AL-Series is priced at $1,699), which really sets the AL-Series in the premium market category. Its price range is undoubtedly high and not for everyone, but if you truly relish your TV shows and spend most of your free time glued to the TV screen, a better display will be a worthwhile investment for you.  If you’re on a budget (who isn’t?), consider the 55″ rather than the much pricier 65″, which retails at $2,799. The specs are the same; it’s just 10 inches less display.

Above: PRISM+ AL65 TV. photo courtesy prism+.

The PRISM+ AL Series is priced at $1,699 for the 55AL model (55″ screen) and $2,799 for the 65AL model (65″ screen). available for purchase on the PRISM+ ONLINE STORE and all authorised online retailers.

The Gucci Pet Collection Presents The Most Luxurious Pet Accessories For Cats And Dogs

Dare we say it? Cruella de Vil got it right when she envisioned pets — dalmatians, in particular — being the super fashionable creatures they are. Except, it’s what we put on them that’s far more exciting. Case in point: Gucci.

Calling all fur parents, Gucci has expanded their lifestyle series to launch their first dedicated line for pets, called the Gucci Pet collection, which sees many of the fashion house’s signature motifs on collars, clothes, feeding bowls, and other accessories.

The GG Canvas and iconic Web Stripe, for instance, feature on collars and harnesses in plain leather, as does the more floral Herbarium print. Both come embellished with details that include the Interlocking G logo or studs. To accompany these, there are also matching leashes of various lengths, chic Air Tag holders, and just about the most luxurious little waste bag holders, complete with Gucci hardware.

[click on the images below to expand.]

Many of these fashionable pieces are made with Demetra, a fabric innovation unveiled in June 2021, created from “animal-free raw materials that are primarily from renewable and bio-based sources”. The brand’s craftsmanship is still retained though, since the material is manufactured entirely in a Gucci factory in Italy, using the same expertise and processes for tanning so we can admire its supple finish.

Elsewhere, there are also clothes for your dogs and cats, including polos, t-shirts, knitwear and coats, in case you feel like heading to the park in matchy-matchy Gucci. Other homeware accessories such as cloches and ceramic bowls give off a refined feel, and double up as design pieces for the home — and yes, this includes made-to-order pieces such as a miniature couch. If you’ve always wanted to splurge on your beloved baby, as if you haven’t already started, this series is a good place to pick up where you left off.

The HEYTEA x FRGMT Series Of All-Black Merchandise Will Be Dropping In Stores Soon

If you know your streetwear and sneakers, then Hiroshi Fujiwara should be a familiar, and celebrated, name. Known as the “godfather of streetwear”, the Japanese designer helms design label Fragment, known for imparting their iconic thunderbolt logo countless cool collabs with Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Off White, Nintendo, and even the Pokemon Company.

Most recently, Fujiwara has put his iconic stamp on a “Black TEA” collaboration with beverage brand HEYTEA, complete with a limited edition HEYTEA x FRGMT drink, and a full range of designer merchandise such as all-black cups, takeaway bags, reusable bugs and more.

THE DRINK

The collection’s limited edition drink, the Strawberry Mulberry-Noir Tea ($5.90), was launched 15 June across HEYTEA stores in Singapore, and arrived in stylised packaging that includes a FRGMT-style black cup, lid, straw, and takeaway bag.

Most famous for their bubble tea and cheese tea offerings, HEYTEA has created an intriguing drink that combines fresh strawberries with the sweet-yet-tart mulberries — chosen for its black juice — with a green jasmine tea base. The result is a refreshing beverage of balanced sweet, zingy and fragrant notes.

THE MERCH

As for the collectible merchandise, HEYTEA has chosen to launch them separately, from 3 July at HEYTEA outlets. These are two key sets available — a tumbler set and a teacup set, which are specially designed for this collaboration.

First up, the HEYTEA x FRGMT Inspiration Tumbler Set ($99) consists of a 330ml insulated tumbler inspired by the natural texture of tea dregs, where each tumbler comes with its own unique textured finish. It’s also accompanied by a bucket bag, a zipped sling bag design, that can hold the reusable tumbler while you’re out and about.

Then, there’s the HEYTEA x FRGMT Inspiration Teacup Set ($149), a creation that marks Fujiwara’s first Chinese teacup set creation. It comes with a textured black ceramic teacup made using tea dregs, which fits into a larger boba-inspired diffuser cup that allows you to create the perfect zen-like ambience as you’re sipping your tea.

HEYTEA X FRGMT collection.  The Strawberry Mulberry-Noir Tea, $5.90, available now till 31 July 2022.
HEYTEA x FRGMT Inspiration Tumbler Set, $99. Available at both the HEYTEA Orchard and Marina Bay Sands stores.
HEYTEA x FRGMT Inspiration Teacup Set, $149. Available only at the HEYTEA Orchard store.

A Quick Guide On What You Need To Know About ‘Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area’, Out Now On Netflix

You already know Money Heist, or you wouldn’t be here reading about its latest Korean adaptation. The hit series, also known as La Casa de Papel, streamed on Netflix to much fanfare, and gained quite the cult following way before Part 5 wrapped up in December last year. Thank goodness then that there’s something new to look forward to this weekend, in order to fill the empty Berlin-less void in our lives: enter, Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area.

“This will go down as a revolution in the history of crime,” says the show’s tagline, but first of all, insight from the cast and crew at a recent press conference that they’re well aware this one’s a Korean take on the original — and importantly, not an exact copy. The storyline unfolds at a fictitious setting that sees the Korean peninsula “on the verge of unification”, where a band of, perhaps opportunistic, robbers in Hahoe masks use the chaos to plan a heist within the Unified Korea Mint.

Same, same, but different? That’s for you to decide, though Yoo Ji-Tae, who plays the Professor, has this to say: “It is a show with a great fandom, but a great story will be told well in any situation and in any country. Korean content is now so beloved by so many people all around the world, probably because the content creators have such clever ideas and smart approaches, and that was done on this show as well; our own charms and sense of humour were infused into the show.”

With that, consider what’s ahead a quick summary of the key pointers you ought to know about Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area.

1. How is the new series and adaptation specific to Korea, either to the country or its people?

Basically, the setting. The series focuses on a fictional time where Korea is on the “cusp of unification”, that is, a time in the future where both South and North Korea are looking to become one singular country.

“I was a big fan of the original series, and wanted to do a remake for it,” said writer Ryu Yong-jae. “From a writer’s point of view, it was fascinating that such a flourish of characters can still take control over the audience without losing the tension. Coincidently, a producer suggested a remake around then, so I just took it as a destiny.”

“I saw the possibility to take further layers of suspicion, conflict, and harmony between the South and the North to work, so I took the offer and started planning,” he continued.

Money Heist Korea: JEA (L to R) Jun Jong-seo as Tokyo, Lee Hyun-woo as Rio, Jang Yoon-ju as Nairobi, Park Hae-soo as Berlin, Lee Won-jong as Moscow and Kim Ji-hun as Denver.

For Director Kim Hong-sun, he, similarly, found the characters from the original La Casa de Papel intriguing as well, “each with their own personalities and charms”. “I knew that the characters would be intriguing whenever and wherever they would be placed in. I thought if we translate the background and characters, we can birth something novel.”

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area takes the original Spanish composition, but has an accurate Korean-ised sensibility. The episodes that occur in between are similar to the original, but how they initiate and end are different, and the characters are more Korean-ised,” he added.

Money Heist Korea: JEA (L to R) Jun Jong-seo as Tokyo, Park Hae-soo as Berlin, Lee Hyun-woo as Rio, Lee Kyu-ho as Oslo, Kim Ji-hoon as Helsinki, Jang Yoon-ju as Nairobi, Kim Ji-hun as Denver and Lee Won-jong as Moscow.

2. What is the ‘Joint Economic Area’ and why is this important in the show?

Both the director and writer of the series referred to the Joint Economic Area as a fictional space that the showrunners dreamt up, set, perhaps somewhere in the future or in their imaginations.

Following the division of the Korean Peninsula in 1945, and soon to be unified in 2026, the two Koreas have set up a virtual ‘Joint Economic Area’ that guarantees free travel and economic activity in the demilitarised zone.  “We assumed that there is an island the size of Yeouido in the Demilitarized Zone in Gaesong, Paju, and Munsan to build a city on it,” said director Kim.

It’s also where we’ll find the Unified Korea Mint (UKM), which is where the government is printing out a common currency. How much to be exact? 4 trillion won, or a whopping 4.2 billion in Singapore dollars.

Money Heist Korea: JEA (L to R) Lee Hyun-woo as Rio, Kim Ji-hun as Denver and Lee Won-jong as Moscow.

3. What are some key plot points to note, and what do the showrunners hope to convey?

Now, this one’s not a spoiler, especially if you’ve watched the original Spanish series. Similar to it, the show starts off with our motley gang, led by the Professor, who occupy the Mint in order to print money.

But that’s where the two shows diverge — here, we’re looking at “the chaos just before the unification”. Added writer Ryu: “What if a currency reform takes place by common currency, and its Mint stands on the military demarcation line where the JSA used to be? What if the robbers of the two Koreas team up to rob the place, and the police of the two Koreas join forces to stop them?”

From Director Kim, we had a better sense of the overall vision he wanted to convey through the adaptation — and this one’s something that holds much meaning for him. “It had to be convincing, feel realistic. That was the part I put the most effort in,” he started.

“I thought deeply about it, maybe the inter-Korean relationship can be put into a future setting, a fictitious city created for the show. The North and South Korea situation is something I want to depict, and if this happens, how would it happen? I wanted to infuse a sense of hope as well.”

4. What is the significance of the Hahoe mask?

This might be the first difference we all noticed for the series, which swaps out the Dali robber mask, to something more culturally appropriate: a Korean trademark, the Hahoe mask.

Park Hae-soo, who plays Berlin, and also known for playing the smart Cho Sang-woo in Squid Game, had this to say: “This is a mask that’s sending a message. In Korea, the Hahoe mask has some significance to it; it embodies criticism of the powerful, while there’s a sense of humour in it as well. When the mask was first brought to me, I was able to feel the sense of overwhelming power when it was worn by everyone in the cast.”

Smiling, but perhaps more sinister or even duplicitous than one would think, the mask’s multi-layered meaning was also picked up on by Lee Kyu-ho, who plays Oslo. “It felt like a delicate masterpiece of all human feelings: joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure.”

(L to R) Park Hae-soo as Berlin, Jang Yoon-ju as Nairobi, Yoo Ji-tae as Professor, Kim Ji-hun as Denver and Lee Won-jong as Moscow.
Money Heist Korea: JEA Kim Yunjin as Seon Woojin.

5. Are there any new characters, or character changes to know about?

From the cast interviews, it seems like most of the Korean characters retain the charms of the original. Yoo Ji-tae, who plays the Professor, noted his character as a “pure genius strategist”, and a man of conviction as he vows not to hurt or injure people even while committing a crime. The role of the female negotiator from the police force, now called Seon Woojin, is played by actress Kim Yunjin, who described her as a “top professional making fast decisions with a superb brain”.

Still, writer Ryu is set on making the characters make sense in this new Korean setting. “New characters were added in that process, and over conversation with the cast members, the characters were reinvented to feel more Korean,” he said. “I wanted the story to be the gang’s desperate findings for survival.”

Money Heist Korea: JEA Park Hae-soo as Berlin.

He noted that the new Berlin, in particular, differed from Pedro Alonso’s version, both in background and motivations. “We wanted our Berlin to be someone who have joined the gang with no reason to live but end up finding one. I also wanted suspicion, conflict, trust and cooperation to unfold within the team, since there’s an inter-Korean setting.”

For more context on the character’s demeanour, Park Hae-soo shared that Berlin “is a man of control” and morally grey, like the original, and looks like a distinguished gentleman who “speaks with a Pyongyang accent, the standard North Korean”. He’s also en escaped prisoner of North Korea’s Gaechon concentration camp, while bearing a striking contrast of character that made Berlin so intriguing in the original. Said Park: “While he treats people harshly, his language is kind and makes him look like a gentleman.”

The story also sees Denver and Nairobi as a known bank robber and counterfeit fraudster, respectively, while Tokyo is a disillusioned North Korean escapee who once dreamed of living the ‘Korean dream’, “only to taste the bitterness of capitalism”. Could this, like many other acclaimed Korean movies and dramas, be a sharp commentary on Korean society and capitalism? You’ll just have to watch and find out.

The PUMA x Frida Kahlo Collection Sees Her Inspiring Art All Over A New Sportswear Collection

You know her from her striking self-portraits and her bold, vibrant art that illustrates female empowerment and independence — Frida Kahlo was truly an iconic artist ahead of her time. In honour of the famous Mexican painter, PUMA has teamed up with the Frida Kahlo Corporation and OEG Latino to launch the PUMA x FRIDA KAHLO collection, which aims to channel her style and purpose through technical designs and powerful mantras.

[click on the images below to expand.]

The collection comes as part of the all-new Female Artist Series by PUMA, an initiative that celebrates equality and empowers the voices of female artists. Frida Kahlo was selected for the kick-off as she was known for constantly challenging the norms and channelling her personal struggles into art and self-confidence. Spirited and bold, Frida serves as an inspiration for the women of today to push beyond the boundaries of an often gender-biased society.

Here’s a closer look at the key pieces from the PUMA x FRIDA KAHLO running and training collection.

1. Run XX NITRO FRIDA KAHLO, $199
.

In an effort to make running shoes less generic, PUMA has created their first-ever running shoe that’s built to a woman’s foot. It features a bold Frida Kahlo-inspired floral printed RUNGUIDE support rail to promote proper alignment and increased stability for longer distances, alongside a tailored fit that consists of a female-specific narrower heel, sculpted arch, and lower instep. The Run XX NITRO Frida Kahlo also incorporates a NITRO foam midsole for the perfect balance of durable and lightweight cushioning.

2. PUMA X FRIDA KAHLO Crop Top Bra, $109
.

Made with premium ellaVATE fabric, the PUMA X FRIDA KAHLO Crop Top Bra is supportive and quick-drying with moisture-wicking technology that will keep you dry and comfortable during workouts. The front showcases floral graphics climbing the sides and contrast stitching accents while the open back features woven crisscross elastic that is reminiscent of traditional Mexican dresses.

3. PUMA X FRIDA KAHLO Reversible Jacket, $209
.

Inspired by The Two Fridas, an emotionally-charged portrait that illustrates the artist’s two differing personalities, the PUMA X FRIDA KAHLO Reversible Jacket features a solid colour design on one side with a subtle flower crown on the hood and a bold and allover floral graphic on the other side. It is also made using dryCELL material which helps to draw moisture away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable.

4. PUMA X FRIDA KAHLO 7/8 Tight, $179
.

Looking for an artistic yet fashion-forward pair of leggings? The PUMA x FRIDA KAHLO 7/8 Tight acts as a true work of art that features floral prints, inspired by Frida’s beautiful blooms, a lace-up elastic waistband detail, and contrast stitching that pays homage to her eclectic personal style. The tight also has a waistband pocket for secure storage of your phone while you workout and uses ellaVATE quick-drying fabric for support and opaque coverage.

Review: 5 ON 25 At Andaz Singapore Serves Modern Cantonese Fare In A Charming Old-World Setting

Premium hotel Andaz Singapore isn’t satisfied with just being a modern, luxurious space with some of the best views in the city — they want to bring us great gastronomic fare too, which is where their latest Cantonese restaurant, 5 ON 25 comes in. Serving refined Cantonese cuisine alongside stunning views from the 25th floor, the dining concept is so-named as each dish aims to please our five taste senses.

The menu is helmed by head chef Lim Hong Lih, a man with an extensive culinary career at fine-dining establishments, as he reworks classic Cantonese dishes, with special attention paid to fresh, seasonal and sustainable seafood.

The five flavours of Chinese cuisine — a harmony of salty, spicy, sour, sweet and bitter — are made heroes of his dishes, and while he respects the familiar comfort of them, still presents them in elevated styles worthy of the upscale setting.

On the menu, you’ll find Roasted Peking Duck and a Boston Lobster “Pao Fan” for instance, dim sum platters, both small bites and big plates for sharing, desserts, and a respectable fried bird’s nest with Sri Lankan crab that’s a chef signature — more on that later.

For drinks, we appreciate the restaurant having a dedicated tea sommelier, Li Guan Yi, who’s in-charge of curating a selection of rare and unique tea leaves for the restaurant.

5 ON 25 also serves a signature tea, which blends oolong, goji berries, osthmanthus, longan, and a precious snow chrysanthemum, together with Anxi Royal Guan Yin, and a vintage 21-year-old Pu-er, a combination which was fragrant and never too heavy for any of the courses served. Along with that, you may also opt for a tea and wine pairing menu. With that, let’s get started on our review.

the mood

Now, we usually start with the food, but the ambience and decor of the place is worth noting. 5 ON 25’s interior has been dreamt up by Hong Kong-based architect André Fu, who introduces the old world charm of 1950s Singapore to the restaurant.

Its sophisticated furnishings pay homage to the classic Chinese supper club, and everything from the intimate foyer space, to the warm ambience of the dining room and cosy private rooms, seeks an almost-cinematic aesthetic, with rich palettes of emerald green and ruby blending together with warm woods and lush velvet.

Together with the exquisite dinnerware and tea sets, these aesthetic choices make for quite a special dining experience, especially with the glistening lights of the cityscape as the backdrop.

the food

Boston lobster claw, homemade chilli sauce (2 pcs), $28

The first item on our menu was the Boston Lobster Claw, which immediately left a good impression on my palate. The dish consisted of two meaty, plump chunks of lobster, still juicy inside, and with a crispy exterior that was done just right. Accompanying that was a homemade chilli sauce served in a tart, which lifted the dish with its sweet-spicy blend that resembled Singapore’s world-famous chilli crab. That combination of seafood and the sweet, sticky chilli was a highlight.

Chef’s barbecue combination platter: Roasted Peking duck, Crispy roast pork, Char siew pork, $38

Next, we were served a tasting portion of the restaurant’s signature roasts, a must-have for Cantonese fare. The Crispy Roast Pork was good, with its welcome fattiness lifted by the zingy horseradish sauce. I did enjoy the Char Siew Pork a tad more though, as it was well-balanced with a good ratio of fat and meat such that it melts on the tongue, and a caramelised sweetness that had that smokey char we all love.

Fried bird’s nest, Sri Lankan crabmeat, beansprouts, superior stock, $98

This was my favourite dish of the night. It’s one of the chef’s signature dishes, and certainly an innovative one since I’ve never had bird’s nest in this fried form before. Here, Superior-grade Indonesian birds’ nest is stir-fried with Sri Lankan crab and bean sprouts, which all contributed to a crunchy texture and springy bite, thanks to the fried bird’s nest; the latter tasted very much like al dente noodles.

As for the Superior Stock, this double-boiled soup lived up to its name with fragrant, umami notes wafting in with every spoonful. Comprising of chicken stock, pressed Chinese ham and pork, it was felt like comfort soul food that I was gladly slurping up on its own, though you may opt to have it together with the fried component.

Deep-fried king prawn, minced chicken, yakiniku soya sauce, $20

Since the menu features a diverse range of seafood, here are some good options. The Deep-Fried King Prawn, served with minced chicken within, was nicely fried with a light, crisp batter on the outside. Personally, while well-fried, I wasn’t a fan of leaving the shell on as it was a little hard to enjoy the dish. However, adding the sweet yakiniku soya sauce was a nice touch as it complemented the prawn’s texture.

Boston lobster poached rice “Pao fan”, lobster broth, spring onion, $25

I’m already a fan of pao fan, mainly because of how it nails that contrast in textures; both crispy rice and plump ones that have been soaking in broth are given their time to shine. This dish pairs rice with Boston lobster and a rich lobster broth, which, no doubt, was umami and deeply comforting. Elevating the dish with lobster made for more flavour depth, that I genuinely wished there was more crispy rice to go around.

Chocolate Mandarin Egg Tart, Lychee Lime Sherbet, $18

I wouldn’t necessarily think ‘chocolate’ when it comes to Cantonese or Chinese cuisine, but I can appreciate this out-of-the-box choice. Think of this as a liu sha bao, where the molten tart centre is instead filled with citrus-infused chocolate that flows out when cut — you’ll be fighting for the leftover tart. The lychee lime sherbet, then, with its zesty notes is a nice way to cut through that richness and sweetness.

Hot sweetened almond tea, $12

If you’re one to order Chinese-style desserts, know that there’s also an Almond Tea, served warm, made of three different kinds of Chinese almonds that are freshly blended together with rock sugar, then served with a glutinous sesame ball. The choice of rock sugar means the dessert’s not too cloying, and still aromatic, a nice and on-theme finish to a satisfying meal.

Review: Is the Omnidesk Ascent WildWood+ and HÅG Capisco Chair worth the investment?

Standing desks seem to be everywhere these days (even Ikea has their own version of it), and one of the original brands to champion this trend, is Omnidesk. While considering getting an Omnidesk to upgrade my WFH space, I asked a friend who owns one for her opinion. Apart from having “no regrets”, she had this to say: “Congratulate yourself on choosing Omnidesk. I know people who tried to skimp and buy cheaper brands. They were so dissatisfied. Made me extra affirmed with my decision.” That pretty much sealed it for me and I decided on their newest model, the Omnidesk Ascent.

Above: the omnidesk ascent wildwood+ and HÅG Capisco Puls 8020 Chair.

THE DESIGN

The Ascent comes in four versions (Standard, Eco, WildWood and WildWood+). I chose the WildWood+ model in Pheasantwood; it’s a rare species of hardwood that has contrasting black and golden streaks, with defined patterns. It’s a gorgeous tabletop, and I love that the edge isn’t perfectly straight — it’s rounded to a smooth, comfortable and safe finish. There are no dangerous sharp corners here. It also doesn’t chip easily when I accidentally bump my chair into it. It’s a solid piece of wood that’s carved beautifully.

Above: the gorgeous pheasantwood finish and smooth edge of the desk.

WORKING WITH THE DESK

My day job as an Editor and Photographer requires me to deal with heaps of press releases and review products, so I truly appreciate the large size that this table comes in (the largest table top option is 183cm long). I can use part of the table as a backdrop to my product shoots, plus as I said before, the Pheasantwood finish is stunning. After weeks of using this large tabletop, I find myself adding to it and sectioning it out for different uses; for example, creating a vanity corner.

Above: I created a vanity corner on one side of the desk.

The best function of this table is obviously its ability to change the height, and this makes so much sense for my work; I can lower the table to do comfortable top-down product shots, or increase its height for straight-on pics against the wall for comfortable shots.

Adjusting the height of this desk is extremely easy and the mechanics feel smooth and steady. The Desk Controller includes up and down buttons, and four numbered buttons for memory presets. There’s also an anti-collision function that will stop the table movement if it senses something is in the way, such as a playful child hiding below the table. Speaking of which, there’s a lock function that I’ve been using to prevent the kids from playing with the Desk Controller.

Above: The omnidesk controller is sleek and discreet. It can be positioned on either the left or right side of the table.

I downloaded the Omnidesk Life app for even more controls and analytics; I can set a reminder to stand, track the time I’ve spent standing, customise the brightness and light colour of the controller, and set height limits so the desk doesn’t go beyond a designated height (for example, if I decide to have shelves on the wall, or drawers below the desk).

ACCESSORIES

The accessories available from Omnidesk are pretty standard but necessary to get the best experience out of this desk. The must-haves are the lockable castors, the Zen cable management pack that includes a cable management bar (I can’t live without this), the Arka desk riser (especially useful if you have a freestanding monitor), and the Hestia desktop organiser — a modular bracket system that can be customised and expanded for even more storage solutions.

Above: The HESTIA desktop organiser, Cololight Strip and ARKA desk riser.

Above: The HESTIA desktop organiser.

Above: The ARKA desk riser is the most useful and necessary of all the accessories on my table; it gives me extra tabletop area to neatly arrange all the things i want and need on my table.

Above: under the desk is the ADVANCED CABLE MANAGEMENT BAR that keeps all of my many cables nice and neat, organised, and out of sight. It comes in black or white — i chose white to blend in with the white wall so it’s even more discreet.

To accompany this incredible desk, I paired it with the HÅG Capisco Puls 8020 Chair by Scandinavian company, Flokk. The chair’s design is iconic, while the brand’s history goes all the way back to 1943, and is one of the founder brands of Scandinavian Business Seating.

The HÅG Capisco’s design is inspired by a horseback rider’s posture and saddle. This chair’s unique shape helps maintain the body’s natural posture, and so sitting and working in it for hours is very comfortable. The full fabric seat is firm yet still cushy, while the backrest provides good support when leaning back on it. I really love how the design serves its functional purpose while still being kept minimal and simple, unlike bulky desk chairs.

Above: The sleek and minimal design of the HÅG Capisco Puls 8020 chair in all black.

The most interesting thing about this chair design is the ability to sit on it in various positions. You can sit facing forward, facing the side, or facing back, which all feel very natural to do, considering humans are fidgety and it’s good to move and not sit in one position for too long.

Above: Back of the chair.

And when used with a standing table like the Omnidesk Ascent, I can easily increase the chair’s height to a semi-sitting/standing position so I’m perching on the seat yet stretching my legs.

On Omnidesk’s website, there are many versions of the HÅG Capisco, and in various colour combinations; so you’ll easily find one that you like. But more importantly, this chair is going to last you a good many years so it’s an investment worth making. You’ll love its compact size and how comfortable it is.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

I’ve spent a month with the Omnidesk Ascent and HÅG Capisco Puls 8020 and I love them both. My desk space is organised, which makes me more focused and happier. They are worth the investment because these really are premium products that will last a lifetime (or until your next upgrade when Omnidesk launches new models).

The Omnidesk Ascent starts from $850, available at theomnidesk.com. The HÅG Capisco chair starts from $1,099 for the HÅG CAPISCO PULS 8020 model (shown here in black).

G-SHOCK goes Iridescent with 5 new watch face designs

G-SHOCK announces the new Iridescent series — the first G-SHOCK series to feature the rainbow vapour deposition process on the watch face. The result is a watch face that creates various shades of colour as it reflects light, which brings to mind the visual colours of the midsummer dusk.

Meet CELINE’s New It-Bag For Fall — The Teen Besace Triomphe

By now, we should be familiar with the Triomphe motif and its links to Hedi Slimane’s vision of CELINE. Refreshed from the archives of the French house, and originally inspired by the Parisian landmark, the Arc de Triomphe, Slimane still retains the timeless feel of the brand by incorporating the logo as minimalist hardware and subtle monogram, creating plenty of new classics. As for their latest Fall bag, the Teen Besace Triomphe, it lands comfortably within CELINE’s line of chic, understated bags.

The first form of the Besace Triomphe was unveiled as part of CELINE’s Summer 2022 collection, as the Chain Besace Triomphe, where the small bag was accompanied by a gold-finished chain.

For Fall 2022, its sleek-looking, compact silhouette now borrows a bit from CELINE’s Teen bag series, in smooth calfskin leather, and with rounded edges and an adjustable shoulder strap, which means you can sling it across the shoulder or wear it crossbody-style.

Inside, there are three functional compartments for your everyday essentials, including a zipped pocket and a flat one. Of course, the look is complete with a metallic Triomphe logo that acts as a closure for the bag’s top flap.

The CELINE Teen Besace Triomphe arrives in four colours in shiny calfskin, and two colours in high-end lizard versions.

Gucci And Harry Styles Team Up For The ‘Gucci HA HA HA’ Collection

It’s Harry’s house, and we’re just living in it. For the ‘As It Was’ singer, who brought back a ton of 80s pop into our AirPods era, it was only a matter of time that he worked together with fashion house Gucci for something significant, especially since the style icon already relishes vivid colour and print-on-print in his wardrobe. And that time is now.

Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, a long-time friend of the British singer, has decided to team up with Harry Styles for the Gucci HA HA HA collection, one that capitalises on both vibrant 70s pop and bohemian aesthetics, combined with sharp menswear tailoring. The result is a playful and liberating collection that brought joy to the runway when it debuted at Milan Men’s Fashion Week on Monday.

If you’re wondering about the unusual name of the collection, you’re not alone. Gucci HA HA HA is named after Styles’ and Michele’s initials, ‘Harry’ and ‘Ales- sandro’, and also happens to be the way the two friends sign off their messages to one another. You’ll see this on printed motifs across the labels of all the items within the collection, some of which are displayed prominently on jacket sleeves.

Like us, Michele is also a fan of Styles’ sense of fashion, noting “his ability to combine items of clothing in a way that is out of the ordinary”. “The idea of working together came to me one day while we were talking on the phone: I proposed creating a “dream wardrobe” with him, starting from those small oddities that come together in child-like visions,” he elaborated.

The collection has a clear sense of English tailoring, though with some twists; a Prince of Wales check forms the basis of dapper double-breasted coats, a newsboy cap is paired with a colourblocked leather jacket, while shirts feature mother-of-pearl buttons.

Then again, we’re loving the whimsical details too, of a yellow gingham three-piece suit for instance, printed with cherries and blue sheep for instance, or sweater vests worn on top of printed pajamas, and not looking a tad out of place.

Pair these with wide-legged denim jeans and fun accessories of a leopard-print suitcase or grumpy teddy brooch, and you’ve practically nailed the eccentric style that Styles effortlessly embodies.

[click on the images below to expand.]

Elsewhere, we’ve also got a little more pared-down designs, such as a Gucci t-shirt bearing the same grumpy teddy bear,  and the words “I want more berries and that summer feeling” across the tee and a pink sweater, a reference to the lyrics of Styles’ song ‘Watermelon Sugar’.

There’s no official confirmation yet, but the collection is said to be available at Gucci stores in October.

Furla’s Line Of Eco-Friendly Bags Includes The Re-Candy, & Other Fun Tote Bags

The sustainable movement is here to stay, and it looks like more and more fashion brands are into it, and introducing more sustainable practices and materials into their signature collections as well. We’re talking Italian brand Furla and their iconic Re-Candy, a vibrant line of satchel bags now made from recycled plastic — but that’s just the start of their eco-friendly series of bags.

Good news, we’ve got loads more options to choose from! The slim and chic Linea Futura collection, for instance, make cute workwear or brunch staples, while a more recently-launched Furla Net explores a tote bag silhouette that can be slung across the body or worn as a handbag. Ahead, a look at their new-in sustainable bags.

FURLA NET

The latest iterations of the Furla Net, a tote bag design, is made using Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), which, unlike rubber, silicone and most other plastics, is 100% recyclable and biodegradable. This material also has other distinct advantages, such as long-lasting wear thanks to its abrasion-resistant properties and innate durability. The original open-top design sees two top handles and a twist-lock closure at the front, for the ultimate in chic.

FURLA LINEA FUTURA

Then, there’s this cute number, the Furla Linea Futura, a minimalist design available in 11 pastel or neon shades. The structured style features a small top handle, removable shoulder strap, and a subtle tone-on-tone logo, and most importantly, is made from a special reclaimed Roxy leather effect fabric in compliance with GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification. This material has been obtained by upcycling tannery waste, while even the process of leather tanning remains metal-free, in order to reduce its environmental impact.

FURLA RE-CANDY

The Furla Candy was a hit when it was first introduced — now, meet the Re-Candy. The first of Furla’s sustainable bags, debuting during Women’s Fashion Week SS22 in Milan, sees the use of recycled Thermoplastic Polyurethane throughout the main body of the design, a unique plastic material that’s been gathered and restored from previously-produced materials for a circular approach to sustainable fashion.

Furthermore, the Re-Candy name and Furla logo are now embossed onto its surface, which avoids the use of polluting inks, while you may opt for a recycled cord strap should you wish to wear it as a crossbody style. The key thing to note is that you’re able to get the same bold pops of colour, while staying true to your conscious lifestyle.

All bags, available at Furla stores and furla.com.

Our Beloved RIMOWA Suitcases Now Arrive In A ‘Quartz Pink’ Shade

Millennial pink? Not really. Say hello to a gleaming metallic pink that now adorns our favourite RIMOWA Original suitcases and Personal Cross-Body Bag. Called ‘quartz pink’, the new shade is inspired by rose quartz crystals, and is featured all over a capsule collection of the German luggage brand’s signature designs, grooved ridges and all.

Known for its healing properties, perhaps some of us would associate this new quartz shade with good vibes. Whether you’re into crystals or not, the finish on the aluminium shell of their suitcases is an interesting take on the usual mattes, or their polycarbonate and aluminium designs; it’s both vibrant and metallic-sleek. Special care and surface treatments have also been done to lock the pigment into the metal alloy, which ensures a lasting metallic sheen.

What the fashion set would love is that the collection includes the Personal Cross-Body Bag, available in a matching Quartz shade, if you’re into the whole coordinated look when you travel. If not, you’ll still be happy to note that the model comes with a removable leather strap and leather details in a complimentary shade of pink.

The range also includes the RIMOWA Original Cabin in Quartz, RIMOWA Original Check-In M in Quartz, and the RIMOWA Original Trunk Plus in Quartz. See all the models here:

The RIMOWA Quartz range will be first available via an exclusive pop-up on Mytheresa for three months. It will then be available from 23 June at all RIMOWA store and online at RIMOWA.COM.
