As Leica continues to celebrate their 100th anniversary, they announce the much-anticipated digital M-Camera with an integrated high resolution electronic viewfinder. The Leica M EV1 isn’t just a milestone in the M-System’s history; it makes adopting a Leica M camera easier and more desirable than ever before.
ELECTRONIC VIEWFINDER
An electronic viewfinder enables reliable and comfortable focusing — especially helpful when using Noctilux lenses wide open. As a portrait photographer, I always focus on the subject’s eye; and with the Leica M11 that I use, I need to keep the eye in the centre of the frame so I can line up the squares. With this new electronic viewfinder, I can use the dial to select where I want the focus to be — making this a complete game-changer for my line of work.
I can compose through-the-lens as well and while clicking away at the shutter, the camera felt speedier than previous M models, making this new device a joy to use.
DESIGN
The new Leica M EV1 is super sleek; the physical ISO dial is absent, the entire unit is a lovely matte black, and the diamond pattern on the leather (similar to the Leica Q) gives the camera a modern look and feel. I still like my physical dials, but it’s not that big of an issue to set the ISO in the digital menu.
While testing the camera on a cover shoot, I set the ISO to 400 and didn’t think about it for the rest of the time — which also made me realise how little I change my ISO on a single shoot at one location with the same kind of lighting. So the lack of a physical ISO dial was much less of an issue for me than I initially imagined.
PRICE
The Leica M EV1 is priced at $11,950 (including GST), and will be available worldwide at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorised dealers from today, 23 October 2025. There’s also an optional hand grip with matching leatherette covering ($600 including GST) for additional stability.
WHO’S THIS FOR?
The Leica M EV1 is best suited for someone who has been wanting to get a digital Leica M, but was apprehensive with the traditional rangefinder. Now with the inclusion of a high resolution electronic viewfinder, the camera is instantly more accessible to photographers.
This is Leica’s newest and most advanced M model to date; and while there will be newer launches in the future, this is the Leica M to get if it’s your very-first M camera.
