NYLON Predicts: The Oscars 2016

The #OscarsSoWhite controversy makes us as uncomfortable as the next person, but like the rest of the world, we’re nonetheless intrigued to find out who wins this February 28. All racial biases put aside, the NYLON Singapore team sat down and dished on who we think will be bringing home an Oscar.

BEST PICTURE

Nominees:
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

Predicted Winner: Spotlight
Unfortunately, this time a star-studded cast (in contender The Big Short) just doesn’t cut it – we’re turning away from the Wolf Of Wall Street vibes and going with our gut with the indie hot favourite.

BEST ACTOR

Nominees:
Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
Matt Damon, The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl
Adam: Eddie Redmayne. He’s my new favourite after his wonderful performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. He’s a versatile, rising actor and deserves the award even though Leo’s in the category. Haha oh well, maybe it’s another big no to Leo.
Tami: I disagree! I don’t think Eddie Redmayne will win again, even if he was great in The Danish Girl. Maybe Leo FINALLY has his chance. Lol.

Predicted Winner: Leonardo DiCaprio
Final verdict? Frankly, while The Danish Girl might have more mass appeal, it kind of feels like… settling. Obviously the results are unpredictable, but the emotional rawness of The Revenant definitely has Leo primed for an Oscar this time round. Plus, he ate raw bison liver on set.
“Yeah, Matt Damon doesn’t stand a chance.”

BEST ACTRESS

Nominees:
Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Predicted Winner: Brie Larson
She played her part of Joy in Room to much critical acclaim – and ours too! Now that she’s just won a Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and SAG award, here’s hoping she has space in her display cabinet for another one. Plus, it’d be so boring if J Law won again for an almost identical movie (to Silver Linings Playbook).

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Nominees:
Christian Bale, The Big Short
Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Predicted Winner: Tom Hardy
No fight in the Nylon office here.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Nominees:
Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara, Carol
Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

Predicted Winner: Alicia Vikander/Kate Winslet
We’re torn over these two who are very much leading ladies in their own right. That said, we’re leaning a little towards Kate Winslet, seeing as how she’s already bagged Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes.
“She probably deserves it, though I don’t really like her. I hold a grudge against her because she let Jack die.”

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Nominees:
Carol
The Hateful Eight
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Sicario

Predicted Winner: The Revenant
Apologies to Tarantino fans, but The Revenant wins hands down for its breathtaking camerawork and colour tones. The teaser trailer alone is quite the work of art.
